We consider the three dimensional gravitational Vlasov-Poisson (GVP) system in both classical and relativistic cases. The classical problem is subcritical in the natural energy space and the stability of a large class of ground states has been derived by various authors. The relativistic problem is critical and displays finite time blow up solutions. Using standard concentration compactness techniques, we however show that the breaking of the scaling symmetry allows the existence of stable relativistic ground states. A new feature in our analysis which applies both to the classical and relativistic problem is that the orbital stability of the ground states does not rely as usual on an argument of uniqueness of suitable minimizers --which is mostly unknown-- but on strong rigidity properties of the transport flow, and this extends the class of minimizers for which orbital stability is now proved.
This work concerns the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system without angular cutoff and Vlasov-Poisson-Landau system including Coulomb interaction in bounded domain, namely union of cubes. We establish the global stability, exponential large-time decay with specular-reflection boundary condition when an initial datum is near Maxwellian equilibrium. We provide the compatible specular boundary condition for high-order derivatives and a velocity weighted energy estimate.
In this paper, we present sharp decay estimates for small data solutions of the following two systems: the Vlasov-Poisson (V-P) system in dimension 3 or higher and the Vlasov-Yukawa (V-Y) system in dimension 2 or higher. We rely on a modification of the vector field method for transport equation as developed by Smulevici in 2016 for the Vlasov-Poisson system. Using the Green's function in particular to estimate bilinear terms, we improve Smulevici's result by requiring only $L^1_{x,v}$ bounds for the initial data and its derivatives. We also extend the result to the Vlasov-Yukawa system.
We prove small data modified scattering for the Vlasov-Poisson system in dimension $d=3$ using a method inspired from dispersive analysis. In particular, we identify a simple asymptotic dynamic related to the scattering mass.
We study the asymptotic regime of strong electric fields that leads from the Vlasov-Poisson system to the Incompressible Euler equations. We also deal with the Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck system which induces dissipative effects. The originality consists in considering a situation with a finite total charge confined by a strong external field. In turn, the limiting equation is set in a bounded domain, the shape of which is determined by the external confining potential. The analysis extends to the situation where the limiting density is non-homogeneous and where the Euler equation is replaced…
We discuss some recent development on the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system in bounded domains with diffuse reflection boundary condition. In addition we present a new regularity result when the particles are surrounded by conductor boundary.
In this paper, we construct unique, local-in-time strong solutions to the Vlasov-Poisson (VP) and Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck (VPFP) systems subjected to external, spatially regular, white-in-time electromagnetic fields in $\mathbb T^d \times \mathbb R^d$. Initial conditions are taken $H^σ$ with $σ> d/2 + 1$ (in addition to polynomial velocity weights). We additionally show that solutions to the VPFP are instantly $C^\infty_{x,v}$ due to hypoelliptic regularization if the external force fields are smooth. The external forcing arises in the kinetic equation as a stochastic transport in velocit…
We study the linearized Vlasov-Poisson system around suitably stable homogeneous equilibria on $\mathbb{R}^d\times \mathbb{R}^d$ (for any $d \geq 1$) and establish dispersive $L^\infty$ decay estimates in the physical space.
In this paper, we prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the Penrose-stable equilibria among solutions of the $2d$ Vlasov-Poisson system with massless electrons.
This work is concerned with the quasineutral limit of the Vlasov-Poisson system in two and three dimensions. We justify the formal limit for very small but rough perturbations of analytic initial data, generalizing the results of \cite{HI} to higher dimension.
We investigate the gyrokinetic limit for the Vlasov-Poisson system in two dimensions, in the regime studied by Golse and Saint-Raymond. We present another proof of convergence to the Euler equation under several assumptions on the energy and on the $L^\infty$ norms of the initial data.
For the whole range of cutoff intermolecular interactions, we give a rigorous mathematical justification of the limit from the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system to the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system as the light speed tends to infinity.Such a limit is shown to hold global-in-time in the perturbative framework. The key point in our analysis is to deduce certain a priori estimates which are independent of the light speed and the main difficulty is due to the degeneracy of the dissipative effect of the electromagnetic field for large light speed.
We consider the asymptotics of large external magnetic field for a 2D Vlasov-Poisson system governing the evolution of a bounded density interacting with a point charge. In a suitable asymptotical regime, we show that the solution converges to a measure-valued solution of the Euler equation with a defect measure.
We study smooth, spherically-symmetric solutions to the Vlasov-Poisson system and relativistic Vlasov-Poisson system in the plasma physical case. We construct solutions that initially possess arbitrarily small C^k norms for the charge densities and the electric fields, but attain arbitrarily large L^1 norms of them at some later time.
This paper is devoted to the linearized Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck system in presence of an external potential of confinement. We investigate the large time behaviour of the solutions using hypocoercivity methods and a notion of scalar product adapted to the presence of a Poisson coupling. Our framework provides estimates which are uniform in the diffusion limit. As an application in a simple case, we study the one-dimensional case and prove the exponential convergence of the nonlinear Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck system without any small mass assumption.
The asymptotic behavior of the solutions of the second order linearized Vlasov-Poisson system around homogeneous equilibria is derived. It provides a fine description of some nonlinear and multidimensional phenomena such as the existence of Best frequencies. Numerical results for the 1Dx1D and 2Dx2D Vlasov-Poisson system illustrate the effectiveness of this approach.
In the present paper, we study the diffusion limit of the classical solution to the Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck (VPFP) system with initial data near a global Maxwellian. We prove the convergence and establish the optimal convergence rate of the global strong solution to the VPFP system towards the solution to the drift-diffusion-Poisson system based on the spectral analysis with precise estimation on the initial layer.
In the present paper, we study the diffusion limit of the classical solution to the unipolar Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (VPB) system with initial data near a global Maxwellian. We prove the convergence and establish the convergence rate of the global strong solution to the unipolar VPB system towards the solution to an incompressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson-Fourier system based on the spectral analysis with precise estimation on the initial layer.
We study the quasineutral limit of a Vlasov-Poisson system that describes the dynamics of ions in a plasma. We handle data with Sobolev regularity under the sharp assumption that the profile of the initial data in the velocity variable satisfies a Penrose stability condition. As a by-product of our analysis, we obtain a well-posedness theory for the limit equation (which is a Vlasov equation with Dirac distribution as interaction kernel) for such data.
We provide a quantitative asymptotic analysis for the nonlinear Vlasov--Poisson--Fokker--Planck system with a large linear friction force and high force-fields. The limiting system is a diffusive model with nonlocal velocity fields often referred to as aggregation-diffusion equations. We show that a weak solution to the Vlasov--Poisson--Fokker--Planck system strongly converges to a strong solution to the diffusive model. Our proof relies on the modulated macroscopic kinetic energy estimate based on the weak-strong uniqueness principle together with a careful analysis of the Poisson equation.
We consider the homogeneous and inhomogeneous Landau equation for very soft and Coulomb potentials and show that approximate Type I self-similar blow-up solutions do not exist under mild decay assumptions on the profile. We extend our analysis to the Vlasov-Poisson-Landau system and to the Boltzmann equation without angular cut-off.
We are interested in a kinetic equation intended to describe the interaction of particles with their environment. The environment is modeled by a collection of local vibrational degrees of freedom. We establish the existence of weak solutions for a wide class of initial data and external forces. We also identify a relevant regime which allows us to derive, quite surprisingly, the attractive Vlasov--Poisson system from the coupled Vlasov-Wave equations.
In this paper, we justify the convergence from the two-species Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (in briefly,VPB) system to the two-fluid incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Poisson (in briefly, NSFP) system with Ohm's law in the context of classical solutions. We prove the uniform estimates with respect to the Knudsen number $\varepsilon$ for the solutions to the two-species VPB system near equilibrium by treating the strong interspecies interactions. Consequently, we prove the convergence to the two-fluid incompressible NSFP as $\varepsilon$ go to 0.
We consider the compressible Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck-Navier-Stokes system in a three dimensional bounded domain with nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. The system describes the evolution of charged particles ensemble dispersed in an isentropic fluid. For the adiabatic coefficient $γ>3/2$, we establish the global existence of weak solutions to this system with arbitrary large initial and boundary data.
We consider the Vlasov-Poisson system with initial data a small, radial, absolutely continuous perturbation of a point charge. We show that the solution is global and disperses to infinity via a modified scattering along trajectories of the linearized flow. This is done by an exact integration of the linearized equation, followed by the analysis of the perturbed Hamiltonian equation in action-angle coordinates.
For the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann equations with random uncertainties from the initial data or collision kernels, we proved the sensitivity analysis and energy estimates uniformly with respect to the Knudsen number in the diffusive scaling using hypocoercivity method. As a consequence, we also justified the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson limit with random inputs. In particular, for the first time, we obtain the precise convergence rate {\em without} employing any results based on Hilbert expansion. We not only generalized the previous deterministic Navier-Stokes-Poisson limits to random i…
We construct (modified) scattering operators for the Vlasov-Poisson system in three dimensions, mapping small asymptotic dynamics as $t\to -\infty$ to asymptotic dynamics as $t\to +\infty$. The main novelty is the construction of modified wave operators, but we also obtain a new simple proof of modified scattering. Our analysis is guided by the Hamiltonian structure of the Vlasov-Poisson system. Via a pseudo-conformal inversion we recast the question of asymptotic behavior in terms of local in time dynamics of a new equation with singular coefficients which is approximately integrated using a …
For the one-species Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (VPB) system in the scaling under which the moments of the fluctuations formally converge to the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Poisson (NSFP) system, we prove the uniform estimates with respect to the Knudsen number $ε$ for the fluctuations. As a consequence, the existence of the global-in-time classical solutions of VPB with all $ε\in (0,1]$ is established in whole space under small size of initial data, and the convergence to incompressible NSFP as $ε$ go to 0 is rigorously justified.
Time-dependent rescalings and Lyapunov functionals for the Vlasov-Poisson and Euler-Poisson systems, and for related models of kinetic equations, fluid dynamics and quantum physics
We study the small data global regularity problem of the $3D$ Vlasov-Poisson system for both the relativistic case and the non-relativistic case. The main goal of this paper is twofold. (i) Based on a Fourier method, which works systematically for both the relativistic case and the non-relativistic case, we give a short proof for the global regularity and the sharp decay estimate for the $3D$ Vlasov-Poisson system. Moreover, we show that the nonlinear solution scatters to a linear solution in both cases. The result of sharp decay estimates for the non-relativistic case is not new, see Hwang-Re…
We study the finite Larmor radius regime for the Vlasov-Poisson system. The magnetic field is assumed to be uniform. We investigate this non linear problem in the two dimensional setting. We derive the limit model by appealing to gyro-average methods cf. \cite{BosAsyAna}, \cite{BosTraEquSin}. We indicate the explicit expression of the effective advection field, entering the Vlasov equation, after substituting the self-consistent electric field, obtained by the resolution of the averaged (with respect to the cyclotronic time scale) Poisson equation. We emphasize the Hamiltonian structure of the…
In this paper, we consider the linearized Vlasov-Poisson equation around an homogeneous Maxwellian equilibrium in a weakly collisional regime: there is a parameter $\eps$ in front of the collision operator which will tend to $0$. Moreover, we study two cases of collision operators, linear Boltzmann and Fokker-Planck. We prove a result of Landau damping for those equations in Sobolev spaces uniformly with respect to the collision parameter $\eps$ as it goes to $0$.
Systems of Vlasov-Poisson type are kinetic models describing dilute plasma. The structure of the model differs according to whether it describes the electrons or positively charged ions in the plasma. In contrast to the electron case, where the well-posedness theory for Vlasov-Poisson systems is well established, the well-posedness theory for ion models has been investigated more recently. In this article, we prove global well-posedness for two Vlasov-Poisson systems for ions, posed on the whole three-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$, under minimal assumptions on the initial data and…
A self-gravitating homogeneous ball of a fluid with pressure zero where the fluid particles are initially at rest collapses to a point in finite time. We prove that this gravitational collapse can be approximated arbitrarily closely by suitable solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson system which are known to exist globally in time.
The recently developed theory of Lagrangian flows for transport equations with low regularity coefficients enables to consider non BV vector fields. We apply this theory to prove existence and stability of global Lagrangian solutions to the repulsive Vlasov-Poisson system with only integrable initial distribution function with finite energy. These solutions have a well-defined Lagrangian flow. An a priori estimate on the smallness of the superlevels of the flow in three dimensions is established in order to control the characteristics.
