We study the linearized Vlasov-Poisson system around suitably stable homogeneous equilibria on $\mathbb{R}^d\times \mathbb{R}^d$ (for any $d \geq 1$) and establish dispersive $L^\infty$ decay estimates in the physical space.
In this paper, we prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the Penrose-stable equilibria among solutions of the $2d$ Vlasov-Poisson system with massless electrons.
In this paper, we consider the linearized Vlasov-Poisson equation around an homogeneous Maxwellian equilibrium in a weakly collisional regime: there is a parameter $\eps$ in front of the collision operator which will tend to $0$. Moreover, we study two cases of collision operators, linear Boltzmann and Fokker-Planck. We prove a result of Landau damping for those equations in Sobolev spaces uniformly with respect to the collision parameter $\eps$ as it goes to $0$.
This paper is devoted to the linearized Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck system in presence of an external potential of confinement. We investigate the large time behaviour of the solutions using hypocoercivity methods and a notion of scalar product adapted to the presence of a Poisson coupling. Our framework provides estimates which are uniform in the diffusion limit. As an application in a simple case, we study the one-dimensional case and prove the exponential convergence of the nonlinear Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck system without any small mass assumption.
In this paper, we study the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system in a 2D pipe with partially absorbing boundary conditions. We show the existence of stationary states for this system near small Poiseuille flows for the fluid phase, for which the kinetic phase is not trivial. We prove the asymptotic stability of these states with respect to appropriately compactly supported perturbations. The analysis relies on geometric control conditions which help to avoid any concentration phenomenon for the kinetic phase.
We revisit the proof of Landau damping near stable homogenous equilibria of Vlasov-Poisson systems with screened interactions in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$ (for $d\geq3$) that was first established by Bedrossian, Masmoudi and Mouhot. Our proof follows a Lagrangian approach and relies on precise pointwise in time dispersive estimates in the physical space for the linearized problem that should be of independent interest. This allows to cut down the smoothness of the initial data required in Bedrossian at al. (roughly, we only need Lipschitz regularity). Moreover, the time decay estimates we…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic stability of Penrose-stable equilibria among solutions of the screened Vlasov-Poisson system in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with $d\geq 3$ that was first established by Bedrossian, Masmoudi, and Mouhot in \cite{JBedrossian2018} with smooth initial data. More precisely, we prove the sharp decay estimates for the density of the perturbed system, exactly like the free transport with only Hölder (i.e., $C^{a}$ for $0<a<1$) perturbed initial data. This improves the recent works in \cite{HanKwanD2021} by Han-Kwan, Nguyen, and Rousset for lower derivatives of the density and…
We consider the Vlasov-Poisson system with initial data a small, radial, absolutely continuous perturbation of a point charge. We show that the solution is global and disperses to infinity via a modified scattering along trajectories of the linearized flow. This is done by an exact integration of the linearized equation, followed by the analysis of the perturbed Hamiltonian equation in action-angle coordinates.
The asymptotic behavior of the solutions of the second order linearized Vlasov-Poisson system around homogeneous equilibria is derived. It provides a fine description of some nonlinear and multidimensional phenomena such as the existence of Best frequencies. Numerical results for the 1Dx1D and 2Dx2D Vlasov-Poisson system illustrate the effectiveness of this approach.
We consider the question of linear instability of an equilibrium of the Relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell (RVM) System that has a strong magnetic field. Standard instability results deal with systems where there are fewer particles with higher energies. In this paper we extend those results to the class of equilibria for which the number of particles does not depend monotonically on the energy. Without the standard sign assumptions, the analysis becomes significantly more involved.
We consider the 1/2-dimensional relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system that describes the time-evolution of a plasma. We find a relatively simple criterion for spectral instability of a wide class of equilibria. This class includes non-homogeneous equilibria that need not satisfy any additional symmetry properties (as was the case in previous results), nor should they be monotone in the particle energy. The criterion is given in terms of the spectral properties of two Schrödinger operators that arise naturally from Maxwell's equations. The spectral analysis of these operators is quite delicate, an…
In this paper, we establish derivative estimates for the Vlasov-Poisson system with screening interactions around Penrose-stable equilibria on the phase space $\mathbb{R}^d_x\times \mathbb{R}_v^d$, with dimension $d\ge 3$. In particular, we establish the optimal decay estimates for higher derivatives of the density of the perturbed system, precisely like the free transport, up to a log correction in time. This extends the recent work \cite{T-R-HK} by Han-Kwan, Nguyen and Rousset to higher derivatives of the density. The proof makes use of several key observations from \cite{T-R-HK} on the stru…
We consider the Vlasov-HMF (Hamiltonian Mean-Field) model. We consider solutions starting in a small Sobolev neighborhood of a spatially homogeneous state satisfying a linearized stability criterion (Penrose criterion). We prove that these solutions exhibit a scattering behavior to a modified state, which implies a nonlinear Landau damping effect with polynomial rate of damping.
We consider linear stability of steady states of 1(1/2) and 3D Vlasov-Maxwell systems for collisionless plasmas. The linearized systems can be written as separable Hamiltonian systems with constraints. By using a general theory for separable Hamiltonian systems, we recover the sharp linear stability criteria obtained previously by different approaches. Moreover, we obtain the exponential trichotomy estimates for the linearized Vlasov-Maxwell systems in both relativistic and nonrelativistic cases.
We study the linearized Vlasov equations and the linearized Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equations in the weakly collisional limit in a uniform magnetic field. In both cases, we consider periodic confinement and Maxwellian (or close to Maxwellian) backgrounds. In the collisionless case, for modes transverse to the magnetic field, we provide a precise decomposition into a countably infinite family of standing waves for each spatial mode. These are known as Bernstein modes in the physics literature, though the decomposition is not an obvious consequence of any existing arguments that we are aware of. We…
We consider the plasma confined in a general axisymmetric spatial domain with perfect conducting boundary which reflects particles specularly, and look at a certain class of equilibria, assuming axisymmetry in the problem. We prove a sharp criterion of spectral stability under these settings. Moreover, we provide several explicit families of stable/unstable equilibria using this criterion.
A one-dimensional, collisionless plasma given by the Vlasov-Poisson system is considered and the stability properties of periodic steady state solutions known as Bernstein-Greene-Kruskal (BGK) waves are investigated. Sufficient conditions are determined under which BGK waves are linearly unstable under perturbations that share the same period as the equilibria. It is also shown that such solutions cannot support a monotonically decreasing particle distribution function.
In this paper we study the linearized Vlasov-Poisson equation for localized disturbances of an infinite, homogeneous Maxwellian background distribution in $\mathbb R^3_x \times \mathbb R^3_v$. In contrast with the confined case $\mathbb T^d _x \times \mathbb R_v ^d$, or the unconfined case $\mathbb R^d_x \times \mathbb R^d_v$ with screening, the dynamics of the disturbance are not scattering towards free transport as $t \to \pm \infty$: we show that the electric field decomposes into a very weakly-damped Klein-Gordon-type evolution for long waves and a Landau-damped evolution. The Klein-Gordon…
By identifying a norm capturing the effect of the forcing governed by the Poisson equation, we give a detailed spectrum analysis on the linearized Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system around a global Maxwellian. It is shown that the electric field governed by the self-consistent Poisson equation plays a key role in the analysis so that the spectrum structure is genuinely different from the well-known one of the Boltzmann equation. Based on this, we give the optimal time decay rates of solutions to the equilibrium.
We give a proof for the asymptotic exponential stability of equilibria of quasilinear parabolic evolution equations in admissible interpolation spaces.
We prove that the Debye screening length emerges in a spatially homogeneous plasma described by the nonlinear Vlasov-Poisson equation interacting with a point charge. While screened stationary states as well as the time-dependent problem are well-studied for the linearized equation, there are few rigorous results on screening in the nonlinear setting. As such, the results presented here cover the stationary case under the assumptions predicted by the linearized theory.
We study the dynamics of perturbations around an inhomogeneous stationary state of the Vlasov-HMF (Hamiltonian Mean-Field) model, satisfying a linearized stability criterion (Penrose criterion). We consider solutions of the linearized equation around the steady state, and prove the algebraic decay in time of the Fourier modes of their density. We prove moreover that these solutions exhibit a scattering behavior to a modified state, implying a linear Landau damping effect with an algebraic rate of damping.
The Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann System governs the time evolution of the distribution function for the dilute charged particles in the presence of a self-consistent electric potential force through the Poisson equation. In this paper, we are concerned with the rate of convergence of solutions to equilibrium for this system over ${\mathbb{R}}^3$. It is shown that the electric field which is indeed responsible for the lowest-order part in the energy space reduces the speed of convergence and hence the dispersion of this system over the full space is slower than that of the Boltzmann equation withou…
In the present paper, we consider the initial value problem for the bipolar Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (bVPB) system and its corresponding modified Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (mVPB). We give the spectrum analysis on the linearized bVPB and mVPB systems around their equilibrium state and show the optimal convergence rate of global solutions. It was showed that the electric field decays exponentially and the distribution function tends to the absolute Maxwellian at the optimal convergence rate $(1+t)^{-3/4}$ for the bVPB system, yet both the electric field and the distribution function converge to e…
A global solvability result of the Cauchy problem of the two-species Vlasov-Maxwell-Landau system near a given global Maxwellian is established by employing an approach different than that of [5]. Compared with that of [5], the minimal regularity index and the smallness assumptions we imposed on the initial data are weaker. Our analysis does not rely on the decay of the corresponding linearized system and the Duhamel principle and thus it can be used to treat the one-species Vlasov-Maxwell-Landau system for the case of $γ>-3$ and the one-species Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system for the case of …
We analyse a reduced 1D Vlasov--Maxwell system introduced recently in the physical literature for studying laser-plasma interaction. This system can be seen as a standard Vlasov equation in which the field is split in two terms: an electrostatic field obtained from Poisson's equation and a vector potential term satisfying a nonlinear wave equation. Both nonlinearities in the Poisson and wave equations are due to the coupling with the Vlasov equation through the charge density. We show global existence of weak solutions in the non-relativistic case, and global existence of characteristic soluti…
In this paper we prove the existence of a large class of periodic solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson in one space dimension that decay exponentially as t goes to infinity. The exponential decay is well known for the linearized version of the Landau damping problem and it has been proved in [4] for a class of solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson system that behaves asymptotically as free streaming solutions and are sufficiently flat in the space of velocities. The results in this paper enlarge the class of possible asymptotic limits, replacing the fatness condition in [4] by a stability condition for t…

The hydrodynamic evolution of self-gravitating gaseous stars is governed by the Euler-Poisson equations. We study the structure of the linear approximation of barotropic perturbations around spherically symmetric equilibria based on functional analytic tools. In contrast to folklore, we show that the spectrum of the linearized operator for general perturbations is not of the Sturm-Liouville type unless the perturbations are restricted. In particular, we prove that it is of the Sturm-Liouville type for irrotational perturbations.
Convergence to stationary solutions in fully nonlinear parabolic systems with general nonlinear boundary conditions is shown in situations where the set of stationary solutions creates a $C^2$-manifold of finite dimension which is normally stable. We apply the parabolic Hölder setting which allows to deal with nonlocal terms including highest order point evaluation. In this direction some theorems concerning the linearized systems is also extended. As an application of our main result we prove that the lens-shaped networks generated by circular arcs are stable under the surface diffusion flow.

We reformulate a general class of classical bead-spring-chain models for dilute polymeric fluids, with Hookean spring potentials, as McKean-Vlasov diffusion. This results in a coupled system of partial differential equations involving the unsteady incompressible linearized Navier-Stokes equations, referred to as the Oseen system, for the velocity and the pressure of the fluid, with a source term which is a nonlinear function of the probability density function, and a second-order degenerate parabolic Fokker-Planck equation, whose transport terms depend on the velocity field, for the probabilit…
We analyze a class of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) defined on $\mathbb{R}^d \times \mathcal{P}_2(\mathbb{R}^d),$ where $\mathcal{P}_2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ is the Wasserstein space of probability measures on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with a finite second-order moment. We show that such equations admit a classical solutions for sufficiently small time intervals. Under additional constraints, we prove that their solution can be extended to arbitrary large intervals. These nonlinear PDEs arise in the recent developments in the theory of large population stochastic control. More precisely they ar…
We consider solutions of the repulsive Vlasov-Poisson system which are a combination of a point charge and a small gas, i.e.\ measures of the form $δ_{(\mathcal{X}(t),\mathcal{V}(t))}+μ^2d{\bf x}d{\bf v}$ for some $(\mathcal{X}, \mathcal{V}):\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}^6$ and a small gas distribution $μ:\mathbb{R}\to L^2_{{\bf x},{\bf v}}$, and study asymptotic dynamics in the associated initial value problem. If initially suitable moments on $μ_0=μ(t=0)$ are small, we obtain a global solution of the above form, and the electric field generated by the gas distribution $μ$ decays at an almost optim…
In this paper, we study Landau damping in the weakly collisional limit of a Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation with nonlinear collisions in the phase-space $(x,v) \in \mathbb T_x^n \times \mathbb R^n_v$. The goal is four-fold: (A) to understand how collisions suppress plasma echoes and enable Landau damping in agreement with linearized theory in Sobolev spaces, (B) to understand how phase mixing accelerates collisional relaxation, (C) to understand better how the plasma returns to global equilibrium during Landau damping, and (D) to rule out that collision-driven nonlinear instabilities dominate. W…
The Landau-Lifshitz equation describes the behaviour of magnetization inside a ferromagnetic object. It is known that the Landau-Lifshitz equation has an infinite number of stable equilibrium points. The existence of multiple stable equilibria is closely related to hysteresis. This is a phenomenon that is often characterized by a looping behaviour; however, the existence of a loop is not sufficient to identify hysteretic systems, but is defined more precisely as the presence of looping as the frequency of the input goes to zero. We describe these two approaches to identification of hysteresis …
Consider the Vlasov-Poisson-Landau system with Coulomb potential in the weakly collisional regime on a $3$-torus, i.e. $$\begin{aligned} \partial_t F(t,x,v) + v_i \partial_{x_i} F(t,x,v) + E_i(t,x) \partial_{v_i} F(t,x,v) = νQ(F,F)(t,x,v),\\ E(t,x) = \nabla Δ^{-1} (\int_{\mathbb R^3} F(t,x,v)\, \mathrm{d} v - \frac{1}{(2π)^3}\int_{\mathbb T^3} \int_{\mathbb R^3} F(t,x,v)\, \mathrm{d} v \, \mathrm{d} x), \end{aligned}$$ with $ν\ll 1$. We prove that for $ε>0$ sufficiently small (but independent of $ν$), initial data which are $O(εν^{1/3})$-Sobolev space perturbations from the global Maxwellians …
