In this paper, we establish derivative estimates for the Vlasov-Poisson system with screening interactions around Penrose-stable equilibria on the phase space $\mathbb{R}^d_x\times \mathbb{R}_v^d$, with dimension $d\ge 3$. In particular, we establish the optimal decay estimates for higher derivatives of the density of the perturbed system, precisely like the free transport, up to a log correction in time. This extends the recent work \cite{T-R-HK} by Han-Kwan, Nguyen and Rousset to higher derivatives of the density. The proof makes use of several key observations from \cite{T-R-HK} on the structure of the forcing term in the linear problem, with induction arguments to classify all the terms appearing in the derivative estimates.
In this paper, we prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the Penrose-stable equilibria among solutions of the $2d$ Vlasov-Poisson system with massless electrons.
We study the quasineutral limit of a Vlasov-Poisson system that describes the dynamics of ions in a plasma. We handle data with Sobolev regularity under the sharp assumption that the profile of the initial data in the velocity variable satisfies a Penrose stability condition. As a by-product of our analysis, we obtain a well-posedness theory for the limit equation (which is a Vlasov equation with Dirac distribution as interaction kernel) for such data.

We revisit the proof of Landau damping near stable homogenous equilibria of Vlasov-Poisson systems with screened interactions in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$ (for $d\geq3$) that was first established by Bedrossian, Masmoudi and Mouhot. Our proof follows a Lagrangian approach and relies on precise pointwise in time dispersive estimates in the physical space for the linearized problem that should be of independent interest. This allows to cut down the smoothness of the initial data required in Bedrossian at al. (roughly, we only need Lipschitz regularity). Moreover, the time decay estimates we…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic stability of Penrose-stable equilibria among solutions of the screened Vlasov-Poisson system in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with $d\geq 3$ that was first established by Bedrossian, Masmoudi, and Mouhot in \cite{JBedrossian2018} with smooth initial data. More precisely, we prove the sharp decay estimates for the density of the perturbed system, exactly like the free transport with only Hölder (i.e., $C^{a}$ for $0<a<1$) perturbed initial data. This improves the recent works in \cite{HanKwanD2021} by Han-Kwan, Nguyen, and Rousset for lower derivatives of the density and…
In this paper we construct particular solutions to the classical Vlasov-Poisson system near stable Penrose initial data on $\mathbb{T} \times \mathbb{R}$ that are a combination of elementary waves with arbitrarily high frequencies. These waves mutually interact giving birth, eventually, to an infinite cascade of echoes of smaller and smaller amplitude. The echo solutions do not belong to the analytic or Gevrey classes studied by Mouhot and Villani, but do, nonetheless, exhibit damping phenomena for large times.
We prove that the Debye screening length emerges in a spatially homogeneous plasma described by the nonlinear Vlasov-Poisson equation interacting with a point charge. While screened stationary states as well as the time-dependent problem are well-studied for the linearized equation, there are few rigorous results on screening in the nonlinear setting. As such, the results presented here cover the stationary case under the assumptions predicted by the linearized theory.
In this paper, we study the Vlasov-Maxwell system in the non-relativistic limit, that is in the regime where the speed of light is a very large parameter. We consider data lying in the vicinity of homogeneous equilibria that are stable in the sense of Penrose (for the Vlasov-Poisson system), and prove Sobolev stability estimates that are valid for times which are polynomial in terms of the speed of light and of the inverse of size of initial perturbations. We build a kind of higher-order Vlasov-Darwin approximation which allows us to reach arbitrarily large powers of the speed of light.
This work is concerned with the quasineutral limit of the one-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson equation, for initial data close to stationary homogeneous profiles. Our objective is threefold: first, we provide a proof of the fact that the formal limit does not hold for homogeneous profiles that satisfy the Penrose instability criterion. Second, we prove on the other hand that the limit is true for homogeneous profiles that satisfy some monotonicity condition, together with a symmetry condition. We handle the case of well-prepared as well as ill- prepared data. Last, we study a stationary boundary-va…
In the Vlasov-Poisson equation, every configuration which is homogeneous in space provides a stationary solution. Penrose gave in 1960 a criterion for such a configuration to be linearly unstable. While this criterion makes sense in a measure-valued setting, the existing results concerning nonlinear instability always suppose some regularity with respect to the velocity variable. Here, thanks to a multiphasic reformulation of the problem, we can prove an "almost Lyapounov instability" result for the Vlasov-Poisson equation, and an ill-posedness result for the kinetic Euler equation and the Vla…
We study the dynamics of perturbations around an inhomogeneous stationary state of the Vlasov-HMF (Hamiltonian Mean-Field) model, satisfying a linearized stability criterion (Penrose criterion). We consider solutions of the linearized equation around the steady state, and prove the algebraic decay in time of the Fourier modes of their density. We prove moreover that these solutions exhibit a scattering behavior to a modified state, implying a linear Landau damping effect with an algebraic rate of damping.
We obtain a natural extension of the Vlasov-Poisson system for stellar dynamics to spaces of constant Gaussian curvature $κ\ne 0$: the unit sphere $\mathbb S^2$, for $κ>0$, and the unit hyperbolic sphere $\mathbb H^2$, for $κ<0$. These equations can be easily generalized to higher dimensions. When the particles move on a geodesic, the system reduces to a 1-dimensional problem that is more singular than the classical analogue of the Vlasov-Poisson system. In the analysis of this reduced model, we study the well-posedness of the problem and derive Penrose-type conditions for linear stability aro…
We prove Landau damping for the collisionless Vlasov equation with a class of $L^1$ interaction potentials (including the physical case of screened Coulomb interactions) on $\mathbb R^3_x \times \mathbb R^3_v$ for localized disturbances of an infinite, homogeneous background. Unlike the confined case $\mathbb T^3_x \times \mathbb R_v^3$, results are obtained for initial data in Sobolev spaces (as well as Gevrey and analytic classes). For spatial frequencies bounded away from zero, the Landau damping of the density is similar to the confined case. The finite regularity is possible due to an add…
In this paper, we give an elementary proof of the nonlinear Landau damping for the Vlasov-Poisson system near Penrose stable equilibria on the torus $\mathbb{T}^d \times \mathbb{R}^d$ that was first obtained by Mouhot and Villani in \cite{MV} for analytic data and subsequently extended by Bedrossian, Masmoudi, and Mouhot \cite{BMM} for Gevrey-$γ$ data, $γ\in(\frac13,1]$. Our proof relies on simple pointwise resolvent estimates and a standard nonlinear bootstrap analysis, using an ad-hoc family of analytic and Gevrey-$γ$ norms.
In this paper we study the linearized Vlasov-Poisson equation for localized disturbances of an infinite, homogeneous Maxwellian background distribution in $\mathbb R^3_x \times \mathbb R^3_v$. In contrast with the confined case $\mathbb T^d _x \times \mathbb R_v ^d$, or the unconfined case $\mathbb R^d_x \times \mathbb R^d_v$ with screening, the dynamics of the disturbance are not scattering towards free transport as $t \to \pm \infty$: we show that the electric field decomposes into a very weakly-damped Klein-Gordon-type evolution for long waves and a Landau-damped evolution. The Klein-Gordon…
Consider Vlasov-Poisson system with a fixed ion background and periodic condition on the space variables, in any dimension d\geq2. First, we show that for general homogeneous equilibrium and any periodic x-box, within any small neighborhood in the Sobolev space W_{x,v}^{s,p} (p>1,s<1+(1/p)) of the steady distribution function, there exist nontrivial travelling wave solutions (BGK waves) with arbitrary traveling speed. This implies that nonlinear Landau damping is not true in W^{s,p}(s<1+(1/p)) space for any homogeneous equilibria and in any period box. The BGK waves constructed are one dimensi…
