This is an elementary and self--contained review of twistor theory as a geometric tool for solving non-linear differential equations. Solutions to soliton equations like KdV, Tzitzeica, integrable chiral model, BPS monopole or Sine-Gordon arise from holomorphic vector bundles over $T\CP^1$. A different framework is provided for the dispersionless analogues of soliton equations, like dispersionless KP or $SU(\infty)$ Toda system in 2+1 dimensions. Their solutions correspond to deformations of (parts of) $T\CP^1$, and ultimately to Einstein--Weyl curved geometries generalising the flat Minkowski space. A number of exercises is included and the necessary facts about vector bundles over the Riemann sphere are summarised in the Appendix.
We review aspects of twistor theory, its aims and achievements spanning thelast five decades. In the twistor approach, space--time is secondary with events being derived objects that correspond to compact holomorphic curves in a complex three--fold -- the twistor space. After giving an elementary construction of this space we demonstrate how solutions to linear and nonlinear equations of mathematical physics: anti-self-duality (ASD) equations on Yang--Mills, or conformal curvature can be encoded into twistor cohomology. These twistor correspondences yield explicit examples of Yang--Mills, and …
Generalization of twistor spinors to Kähler manifolds which are called Kählerian twistor spinors are considered. We find the differential equation satisfied by the bilinear forms of Kählerian twistor spinors. We show that the bilinear form equation reduces to Kählerian conformal Killing-Yano equation under special conditions. We also investigate the special cases of holomorphic and anti-holomorphic Kählerian twistor spinors and the bilinear forms of alternative definitions for Kählerian twistor spinors.
In this paper, we establish basic material for future investigations of the analysis and geometry of the twistor bundle, and of differential operators with the twistor bundle as source and/or target, especially the Rarita-Schwinger operator, a first order differential operator taking twistors to twistors.
We demonstrate how the complex integral formula for the Airy functions arises from Penrose's twistor contour integral formula. We then use the Lax formulation of the isomonodromy problem with one irregular singularity of order four to show that the Airy equation arises from the anti-self-duality equations for conformal structures of neutral signature invariant under the isometric action of the Bianchi II group. This conformal structure admits a null-Kähler metric in its conformal class which we construct explicitly.
We show that, in analyzing differential equations obeyed by one-loop gauge theory amplitudes, one must take into account a certain holomorphic anomaly. When this is done, the results are consistent with the simplest twistor-space picture of the available one-loop amplitudes.
We define a twistor-like transform of the equations of eleven-dimensional supergravity. More precisely these equations are encoded by the CR-structure on the twistor space P^{2*15+11|8*2+16}. In addition equations of the linearized eleven-dimensional supergravity adapted to the 3-form potential can be transformed into the tangential Cauchy-Riemann equation d omega=0 on P.
We establish a Penrose-Ward transform yielding a bijection between holomorphic principal 2-bundles over a twistor space and non-Abelian self-dual tensor fields on six-dimensional flat space-time. Extending the twistor space to supertwistor space, we derive sets of manifestly N=(1,0) and N=(2,0) supersymmetric non-Abelian constraint equations containing the tensor multiplet. We also demonstrate how this construction leads to constraint equations for non-Abelian supersymmetric self-dual strings.
Solutions to the $n$-dimensional Laplace equation which are constant on a central quadric are found. The associated twistor description of the case $n=3$ is used to characterise Gibbons-Hawking metrics with tri-holomorphic $SL(2, \C)$ symmetry.
We consider gauged twistor spinors which are supersymmetry generators of supersymmetric and superconformal field theories in curved backgrounds. We show that the spinor bilinears of gauged twistor spinors satify the gauged conformal Killing-Yano equation. We prove that the symmetry operators of the gauged twistor spinor equation can be constructed from ordinary conformal Killing-Yano forms in constant curvature backgrounds. This provides a way to obtain gauged twistor spinors from ordinary twistor spinors.
In this work a proposal for definition of twistors on generic curved spaces is exposed and investigated. We consider superpositions of nearly autoparallel and nearly geodesic maps (nearly conformal maps, nc-maps) of (pseudo-)Riemannian spaces as generalizations of conformal transforms. We introduce the nearly autoparallel twistor equations being compatible on nc-flat spaces and study nearly autoparallel twistor structures generating curved spaces and vacuum Einstein equations.
Using Lorentz force equation as an input a Hamiltonian mechanics on the non-projective two twistor phase space TxT is formulated. Such a construction automatically reproduces dynamics of the intrinsic classical relativistic spin. The charge appears as a dynamical variable. It is also shown that if the classical relativistic spin function on TxT vanishes, the natural conformally invariant symplectic structure on TxT reduces to the natural symplectic structure on the cotangent bundle of the Kaluza-Klein space.
The Kerr theorem is revisited as part of the twistor program in six dimensions. The relationship between pure spinors and integrable 3-planes is investigated. The real condition for Lorentzian spacetimes is seen to induce a projective property in the space of solutions, reminiscent of the quaternionic structure of the 6-dimensional Lorentz group. The twistor equation (or Killing spinor equations generically) also has an interpretation as integrable null planes and a family of Einstein spacetimes with this property are presented in the Kerr-Schild fashion.
A Dirac bundle is a euclidean bundle over a riemannian manifold $M$ which is a compatible left $C\ell(M)$-module, together with a metric connection also compatible with the Clifford action in a natural way. We prove some vanishing theorems and introduce the twistor equation within this framework. In particular, we exhibit a characterization of solutions for this equation in terms of the Dirac operator $D$ and a suitable Weitzenböck-type curvature operator $\mathcal{R}$. Finally, we analyze the especial case of the Clifford bundle to prove existence of nontrivial solutions of the twistor equati…
We describe a novel twistorial construction of the asymptotic BMS symmetries at null infinity for asymptotically flat spacetimes. We define BMS twistors as spinor solutions to some set of components of the usual spacetime twistor equation restricted to null infinity. The space of BMS twistors is infinite-dimensional. We show that given two BMS twistors their symmetric tensor product can be used to generate (complex) vector fields which are the infinitesimal BMS symmetries of null infinity. In this sense BMS twistors are "square roots" of BMS symmetries. We also show that these BMS twistor equa…
We consider the Hermitian-Yang-Mills (HYM) equations for gauge potentials on a complex vector bundle E over an almost complex manifold X^6 which is the twistor space of an oriented Riemannian manifold M^4. Each solution of the HYM equations on such X^6 defines a pseudo-holomorphic structure on the bundle E. It is shown that the pull-back to X^6 of any anti-self-dual gauge field on M^4 is a solution of the HYM equations on X^6. This correspondence allows us to introduce new twistor actions for bosonic and supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories. As examples of X^6 we consider homogeneous nearly Kaeh…
We discuss twistor-like interpretation of the $Sp(8)$ invariant formulation of 4d massless fields in ten dimensional Lagrangian Grassmannian $Sp(8)/P$ which is the generalized space-time in this framework. The correspondence space $\mathbf{C}$ is $SpH(8)/PH$ where $SpH(8)$ is the semidirect product of $Sp(8)$ with Heisenberg group $\HG$ and $PH$ is some quasiparabolic subgroup of $SpH(8)$. Spaces of functions on $Sp(8)/P$ and $SpH(8)/PH$ consist of $Q_P $ closed functions on $Sp(8)$ and $Q_{PH} $ closed functions on $SpH(8)$, where $Q_P $ and $Q_{PH}$ are canonical BRST operators of $P$ and $P…
We study scattering equations and formulas for tree amplitudes of various theories in four dimensions, in terms of spinor helicity variables and on-shell superspace for supersymmetric theories. As originally obtained in Witten's twistor string theory and other twistor-string models, the equations can take either polynomial or rational forms, and we clarify the simple relation between them. We present new, four-dimensional formulas for all tree amplitudes in the non-linear sigma model, a special Galileon theory and the maximally supersymmetric completion of the Dirac-Born-Infeld theory. Further…
It is well known that twistor constructions can be used to analyse and to obtain solutions to a wide class of integrable systems. In this article we express the standard twistor constructions in terms of the concept of an admissible family of rational curves in certain twistor spaces. Examples of of such families can be obtained as subfamilies of a simple family of rational curves using standard operations of algebraic geometry. By examination of several examples, we give evidence that this construction is the basis of the construction of many of the most important solitonic and algebraic solu…
We consider superstring sigma models that are based on coset superspaces G/H in which H arises as the fixed point set of an order-4 automorphism of G. We show by means of twistor theory that the corresponding first-order system, consisting of the Maurer-Cartan equations and the equations of motion, arises from a dimensional reduction of some generalised self-dual Yang-Mills equations in eight dimensions. Such a relationship might help shed light on the explicit construction of solutions to the superstring equations including their hidden symmetry structures and thus on the properties of their …
I present a twistor action functional for null 2-surfaces (null strings) in 4D Minkowski spacetime. The proposed formulation is reparametrization invariant and free of algebraic and differential constraints. Proposed approach results in derivation of evolution equations for the null strings. It is shown that non-geodesic null strings are contained in the presented formalism. A discussion of the problem of minimality for 2-surfaces with degenerate induced metric is given. I also speculate on the possible description of strings (time-like 2-surfaces) and conventional (space-like) 2-surfaces.
We study a complex analogue of a Wilson Loop, defined over a complex curve, in non-Abelian holomorphic Chern-Simons theory. We obtain a version of the Makeenko-Migdal loop equation describing how the expectation value of these Wilson Loops varies as one moves around in a holomorphic family of curves. We use this to prove (at the level of the integrand) the duality between the twistor Wilson Loop and the all-loop planar S-matrix of N=4 super Yang-Mills by showing that, for a particular family of curves corresponding to piecewise null polygons in space-time, the loop equation reduce to the all-l…
We give a brief overview of a non-Lagrangian approach to field theory based on a generalization of the Kerr-Penrose theorem and algebraic twistor equations. Explicit algorithms for obtaining the set of fundamental (Maxwell, SL(2, C)-Yang-Mills, spinor Weyl and curvature) fields associated with every solution of the basic system of algebraic equations are reviewed. The notion of a boost-invariant solution is introduced, and the unique axially-symmetric and boost-invariant solution which can be generated by twistor functions is obtained, together with the associated fields. It is found that this…
We construct manifestly superconformal field theories in six dimensions which contain a non-Abelian tensor multiplet. In particular, we show how principal 3-bundles over a suitable twistor space encode solutions to these self-dual tensor field theories via a Penrose-Ward transform. The resulting higher or categorified gauge theories significantly generalise those obtained previously from principal 2-bundles in that the so-called Peiffer identity is relaxed in a systematic fashion. This transform also exposes various unexplored structures of higher gauge theories modelled on principal 3-bundles…
We briefly review the hierarchy for the hyper-Kähler equations and define a notion of symmetry for solutions of this hierarchy. A four-dimensional hyper-Kähler metric admits a hidden symmetry if it embeds into a hierarchy with a symmetry. It is shown that a hyper-Kähler metric admits a hidden symmetry if it admits a certain Killing spinor. We show that if the hidden symmetry is tri-holomorphic, then this is equivalent to requiring symmetry along a higher time and the hidden symmetry determines a `twistor group' action as introduced by Bielawski \cite{B00}. This leads to a construction for the …
Recently, Kallen and Zabzine computed the partition function of a twisted supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on the five-dimensional sphere using localisation techniques. Key to their construction is a five-dimensional generalisation of the instanton equation to which they refer as the contact instanton equation. Subject of this article is the twistor construction of this equation when formulated on K-contact manifolds and the discussion of its integrability properties. We also present certain extensions to higher dimensions and supersymmetric generalisations.
A gauged version of Berkovits twistor string theory featuring the particle content of N=8 supergravity was suggested by Abou-Zeid, Hull and Mason. The equations of motion for a particular multiplet in the modified theory are examined on the level of basic twistor fields and thereby shown to imply the vanishing of the negative helicity graviton on-shell. Additionally, the restrictions emerging from the equation of motion for the new gauge field \bar{B} reveal the chiral nature of interactions in theories constructed in this manner. Moreover, a particular amplitude in Berkovits open string theor…
The Kerr-Newman spinning particle displays some remarkable relations to the Dirac electron and has a reach spinor structure which is based on a twistorial description of the Kerr congruence determined by the Kerr theorem. We consider the relation between this spinor-twistorial structure and spinors of the Dirac equation, and show that the Dirac equation may naturally be incorporated into Kerr-Schild formalism as a master equation controlling the twistorial structure of Kerr geometry. As a result, the Dirac electron acquires an extended space-time structure having clear coordinate description w…
The new principle of constrained twistor-like variables is proposed for construction of the Cartan 1-forms on the worldsheet of the D=3,4,6 bosonic strings. The corresponding equations of motion are derived. Among them there are two well-known Liouville equations for real and complex worldsheet functions W(s,\bar s). The third one in which W(s,\bar s) is replaced by the quaternionic worldsheet function is unknown and can be thought of as that of the SU(2) nonlinear sigma-model governing the classical dynamics of the bosonic string in D=6.
Recently, we introduced the "Newman-Penrose map," a novel correspondence between a certain class of solutions of Einstein's equations and self-dual solutions of the vacuum Maxwell equations, which we showed was closely related to the classical double copy. Here, we give an alternative definition of this correspondence in terms of quantities that are defined naturally on twistor space, and a shear-free null geodesic congruence on Minkowski space whose twistorial character is articulated by the Kerr theorem. The advantage of this reformulation is that it is purely geometrical in nature, being ma…
The earlier proposed conditions of (bi)quaternionic differentiability are nonlinear, give rize to the 2-spinor and the self-dual gauge structures and may be considered as the it generating system of equations (GSE) with respect to the source-free Maxwell, Yang-Mills and eikonal equations. We present the general solution of the GSE in terms of twistor variables, analize its rather specific gauge symmetry and demonstrate the relation of GSE to the equations of shear-free null congruences and, consequently, - to effective metrics of Kerr- Shild type. The concept of particles as singularities of p…
Quaternion-Kaehler four-manifolds, or equivalently anti-self-dual Einstein manifolds, are locally determined by one scalar function subject to Przanowski's equation. Using twistorial methods we construct a Lax Pair for Przanowski's equation, confirming its integrability. The Lee form of a compatible local complex structure, which one can always find, gives rise to a conformally invariant differential operator acting on sections of a line bundle. Special cases of the associated generalised Laplace operator are the conformal Laplacian and the linearised Przanowski operator. We provide recursion …
The Abelian Higgs model on a compact Riemann surface Σof genus g is considered. We show that for g > 1 the Bogomolny equations for multi-vortices at critical coupling can be obtained as compatibility conditions of two linear equations (Lax pair) which are written down explicitly. These vortices correspond precisely to SO(3)-symmetric Yang-Mills instantons on the (conformal) gravitational instanton Σ\times S^2 with a scalar-flat Kahler metric. Thus, the standard methods of constructing solutions and studying their properties by using Lax pairs (twistor approach, dressing method etc.) can be app…
We propose a connected prescription formula in twistor space for all tree-level form factors of the stress tensor multiplet operator in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills, which is a generalisation of the expression of Roiban, Spradlin and Volovich for superamplitudes. By introducing link variables, we show that our formula is identical to the recently proposed four-dimensional scattering equations for form factors. Similarly to the case of amplitudes, the link representation of form factors is shown to be directly related to BCFW recursion relations, and is considerably more tractable than the …
This thesis carries out a detailed investigation of the action for pure Yang- Mills theory which L. Mason formulated in twistor space. The rich structure of twistor space results in greater gauge freedom compared to the theory in ordinary space-time. One particular gauge choice, the CSW gauge, allows simplifications to be made at both the classical and quantum level. The equations of motion have an interesting form in the CSW gauge, which suggests a possible solution procedure. This is explored in three special cases. Explicit solutions are found in each case and connections with earlier work …
Spin raising and lowering operators for massless field equations constructed from twistor spinors are considered. Solutions of the spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ massless Rarita-Schwinger equation from source-free Maxwell fields and twistor spinors are constructed. It is shown that this construction requires Ricci-flat backgrounds due to the gauge invariance of the massless Rarita-Schwinger equation. Constraints to construct spin raising and lowering operators for Rarita-Schwinger fields are found. Symmetry operators for Rarita-Schwinger fields via twistor spinors are obtained.
Unique twistor--like Lorentz harmonic formulation for all N=1 supersymmetric extended objects (super-p-branes) moving in the space--time of arbitrary dimension D (admissible for given $p$) are suggested. The equations of motion are derived, explicit form of the κ-symmetry transformations is presented and the classical equivalence to the standard formulation is proved. The cases with minimal world--sheet dimensions $p=1,2$, namely of D=10 heterotic string and D=11 supermembrane, are considered in details. In particular, the explicit form of irreducible κ-symmetry transformations for D=11 superm…
In the recent paper hep-th/0502076, it was argued that the open topological B-model whose target space is a complex (2|4)-dimensional mini-supertwistor space with D3- and D1-branes added corresponds to a super Yang-Mills theory in three dimensions. Without the D1-branes, this topological B-model is equivalent to a dimensionally reduced holomorphic Chern-Simons theory. Identifying the latter with a holomorphic BF-type theory, we describe a twistor correspondence between this theory and a supersymmetric Bogomolny model on R^3. The connecting link in this correspondence is a partially holomorphic…
In the field theories with twistor structure particles can be identified with (spacially bounded) caustics of null geodesic congruences defined by the twistor field. As a realization, we consider the ``algebrodynamical'' approach based on the field equations which originate from noncommutative analysis (over the algebra of biquaternions) and lead to the complex eikonal field and to the set of gauge fields associated with solutions of the eikonal equation. Particle-like formations represented by singularities of these fields possess ``elementary'' electric charge and other realistic ``quantum n…
In this talk we review the harmonic space formulation of the twistor transform for the supersymmetric self-dual Yang-Mills equations. The recently established harmonic-twistor correspondence for the N-extended supersymmetric gauge theories is described. It affords an explicit construction of solutions to these equations which displays a remarkable matreoshka-like structure determined by the N=0 core.
We review briefly the notion of BPS preons, first introduced in 11-dimensional context as hypothetical constituents of M-theory, in its generalization to arbitrary dimensions and emphasizing the relation with twistor approach. In particular, the use of a 'twistor-like' definition of BPS preon (almost) allows us to remove supersymmetry arguments from the discussion of the relation of the preons with higher spin theories and also of the treatment of BPS preons as constituents. We turn to the supersymmetry in the second part of this contribution, where we complete the algebraic discussion with su…
This paper addresses the question, whether the solutions of the scattering equations in four space-time dimensions can be expressed as rational functions of the momentum twistor variables. This is the case for $n\le5$ external particles. For general $n$ there are always two solutions, which are rational functions of the momentum twistor variables. However, the remaining solutions are in general not rational. In the case $n=6$ the remaining four solutions can be expressed as algebraic functions. These four solutions are constructed explicitly in this paper.
Recently, twistor-like formulations of tree amplitudes involving $n$ massless particles have been proposed for various 6D supersymmetric theories. The formulas are based on two different forms of the scattering equations: one based on rational maps and the other based on polarized scattering equations. We show that both formulations can be interpreted in terms of a symplectic (or complex Lagrangian) Grassmannian, $\mathbb{LG}(n, 2n)$, and that they correspond to different ways of fixing the ${\rm GL}(n, \mathbb{C})$ symmetry of $\mathbb{LG}(n, 2n)$. This provides an understanding of the equiva…
We discuss the twistor correspondence between complex vector bundles over a self-dual four-dimensional manifold and holomorphic bundles over its twistor space and describe the moduli space of self-dual Yang-Mills fields in terms of Cech and Dolbeault cohomology sets. The cohomological description provides the geometric interpretation of symmetries of the self-dual Yang-Mills equations.
We introduce a quantum Minkowski space-time based on the quantum group SU(2)q extended by a degree operator and formulate a quantum version of the anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equation. We construct solutions of the quantum equations using the classical ADHM linear data, and conjecture that, up to gauge transformations, our construction yields all the solutions. We also find a deformation of Penrose's twistor diagram, giving a correspondence between the quantum Minkowski space-time and the classical projective twistor space.
