We show that the approaches to integrable systems via 4d Chern-Simons theory and via symmetry reductions of the anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equations are closely related, at least classically. Following a suggestion of Kevin Costello, we start from holomorphic Chern-Simons theory on twistor space, defined with the help of a meromorphic (3,0)-form $Ω$. If $Ω$ is nowhere vanishing, it descends to a theory on 4d space-time with classical equations of motion equivalent to the anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equations. Examples include a 4d analogue of the Wess-Zumino-Witten model and a theory of a Lie algebra valued scalar with a cubic two derivative interaction. Under symmetry reduction, these yield actions for 2d integrable systems. On the other hand, performing the symmetry reduction directly on twistor space reduces holomorphic Chern-Simons theory to the 4d Chern-Simons theory with disorder defects studied by Costello & Yamazaki. Finally we show that a similar reduction by a single translation leads to a 5d partially holomorphic Chern-Simons theory describing the Bogomolny equations.
A covariant twistor action for chiral higher-spin theory in (A)dS and flat space is constructed in terms of a holomorphic Chern-Simons theory on twistor space. The action reproduces all known cubic vertices of chiral higher-spin theory in flat space. The spacetime action of the holomorphic Chern-Simons theory in flat space is also obtained.
We review aspects of twistor theory, its aims and achievements spanning thelast five decades. In the twistor approach, space--time is secondary with events being derived objects that correspond to compact holomorphic curves in a complex three--fold -- the twistor space. After giving an elementary construction of this space we demonstrate how solutions to linear and nonlinear equations of mathematical physics: anti-self-duality (ASD) equations on Yang--Mills, or conformal curvature can be encoded into twistor cohomology. These twistor correspondences yield explicit examples of Yang--Mills, and …
We consider the twistor space ${\cal P}^6\cong{\mathbb R}^4{\times}{\mathbb C}P^1$ of ${\mathbb R}^4$ with a non-integrable almost complex structure ${\cal J}$ such that the canonical bundle of the almost complex manifold $({\cal P}^6, {\cal J})$ is trivial. It is shown that ${\cal J}$-holomorphic Chern-Simons theory on a real $(6|2)$-dimensional graded extension ${\cal P}^{6|2}$ of the twistor space ${\cal P}^6$ is equivalent to self-dual Yang-Mills theory on Euclidean space ${\mathbb R}^4$ with Lorentz invariant action. It is also shown that adding a local term to a Chern-Simons-type action …
We show that the off-shell N=3 action of N=4 super Yang-Mills can be written as a holomorphic Chern-Simons action whose Dolbeault operator is constructed from a complex-real (CR) structure of harmonic space. We also show that the local space-time operators can be written as a Penrose transform on the coset SU(3)/(U(1) \times U(1)). We observe a strong similarity to ambitwistor space constructions.
We introduce a covariant finite regulator for N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory on S^4. Our formulation is based on holomorphic Chern-Simons theory on twistor space. By switching on a large background flux, the twistor space dissolves into a fuzzy geometry, with a finite number of points. The large N continuum limit of the matrix model naturally approaches ordinary N = 4 SYM. We comment on the relation between our model and the 4D quantum Hall effect.
Many integrable systems can be reformulated as holomorphic vector bundles on twistor space. This is a powerful organizing principle in the theory of integrable systems. One shortcoming is that it is formulated at the level of the equations of motion. From this perspective, it is mysterious that integrable systems have Lagrangians. In this paper, we study a Chern-Simons action on twistor space and use it to derive the Lagrangians of some integrable sigma models. Our focus is on examples that come from dimensionally reduced gravity and supergravity. The dimensional reduction of general relativit…
By exploiting in large-N YM the change of variables from the gauge connection to the ASD part of its curvature by a non-SUSY version of the Nicolai map, we show that certain twistor Wilson loops supported on a Lagrangian submanifold of twistor space are localized on lattices of surface operators of Z(N) holonomy that form translational invariant sectors labelled by the magnetic charge k=1,2,...,N-1 at a point. The localization is obtained reducing the loop equation in the ASD variables in the holomorphic gauge, regularized by analytic continuation to Minkowski space-time, to a critical equatio…
In the recent paper hep-th/0502076, it was argued that the open topological B-model whose target space is a complex (2|4)-dimensional mini-supertwistor space with D3- and D1-branes added corresponds to a super Yang-Mills theory in three dimensions. Without the D1-branes, this topological B-model is equivalent to a dimensionally reduced holomorphic Chern-Simons theory. Identifying the latter with a holomorphic BF-type theory, we describe a twistor correspondence between this theory and a supersymmetric Bogomolny model on R^3. The connecting link in this correspondence is a partially holomorphic…

By replacing the ordinary product with the so called $\star$-product, one can construct an analogue of the anti-self-dual Yang-Mills (ASDYM) equations on the noncommutative $\bbR^4$. Many properties of the ordinary ASDYM equations turn out to be inherited by the $\star$-product ASDYM equation. In particular, the twistorial interpretation of the ordinary ASDYM equations can be extended to the noncommutative $\bbR^4$, from which one can also derive the fundamental strutures for integrability such as a zero-curvature representation, an associated linear system, the Riemann-Hilbert problem, etc. T…
We study a complex analogue of a Wilson Loop, defined over a complex curve, in non-Abelian holomorphic Chern-Simons theory. We obtain a version of the Makeenko-Migdal loop equation describing how the expectation value of these Wilson Loops varies as one moves around in a holomorphic family of curves. We use this to prove (at the level of the integrand) the duality between the twistor Wilson Loop and the all-loop planar S-matrix of N=4 super Yang-Mills by showing that, for a particular family of curves corresponding to piecewise null polygons in space-time, the loop equation reduce to the all-l…
We exploit the properties of the three-dimensional hyperbolic space to discuss a simplicial setting for open/closed string duality based on (random) Regge triangulations decorated with null twistorial fields. We explicitly show that the twistorial N-points function, describing Dirichlet correlations over the moduli space of open N-bordered genus g surfaces, is naturally mapped into the Witten-Kontsevich intersection theory over the moduli space of N-pointed closed Riemann surfaces of the same genus. We also discuss various aspects of the geometrical setting which connects this model to PSL(2,C…
We study the approaches to two-dimensional integrable field theories via a six-dimensional(6D) holomorphic Chern-Simons theory defined on twistor space. Under symmetry reduction, it reduces to a four-dimensional Chern-Simons theory, while under solving along fibres it leads to four-dimensional(4D) integrable theory, the anti-self-dual Yang-Mills or its generalizations. From both four-dimensional theories, various two-dimensional integrable field theories can be obtained. In this work, we try to investigate several two-dimensional integrable deformations in this framework. We find that the $λ$-…
We consider actions for particles and strings, including twistorial descriptions on 4d Minkowski and AdS$_5$ spacetimes from the point of view of co-adjoint orbits for the isometry group. We also consider the collective coordinate dynamics of singular solutions in Chern-Simons (CS) theories and CS theories of gravity. This is a generalization of the work of Einstein, Infeld and Hoffmann and also has potential points of contact with fluid-gravity correspondence.
Motivated by potential applications to holography on space-times of positive curvature, and by the successful twistor description of scattering amplitudes, we propose a new dual matrix formulation of N = 4 gauge theory on S(4). The matrix model is defined by taking the low energy limit of a holomorphic Chern-Simons theory on CP(3|4), in the presence of a large instanton flux. The theory comes with a choice of S(4) radius L and a parameter N controlling the overall size of the matrices. The flat space variant of the 4D effective theory arises by taking the large N scaling limit of the matrix mo…

We give holomorphic Chern-Simons-like action functionals on supertwistor space for self-dual supergravity theories in four dimensions, dealing with N=0,...,8 supersymmetries, the cases where different parts of the R-symmetry are gauged, and with or without a cosmological constant. The gauge group is formally the group of holomorphic Poisson transformations of supertwistor space where the form of the Poisson structure determines the amount of R-symmetry gauged and the value of the cosmological constant. We give a formulation in terms of a finite deformation of an integrable \dbar-operator on a …
We provide an off-shell formulation of four-dimensional higher spin gravity based on a covariant Hamiltonian action on an open nine-dimensional Poisson manifold whose boundary consists of the direct product of spacetime and a noncommutative twistor space of S^2 x S^2 topology. The fundamental field is a superconnection consisting of even and odd differential forms valued in the odd and even sectors of a 3-graded associative algebra given by the direct product of an eight-dimensional Frobenius algebra and a higher spin algebra extended by inner Klein operators. The superconnection consists of t…
In this paper, we propose so-called fattened complex manifolds as target spaces for the topological B-model. We naturally obtain these manifolds by restricting the structure sheaf of the N=4 supertwistor space, a process, which can be understood as a fermionic dimensional reduction. Using the twistorial description of these fattened complex manifolds, we construct Penrose-Ward transforms between solutions to the holomorphic Chern-Simons equations on these spaces and bosonic subsectors of solutions to the N=4 self-dual Yang-Mills equations on C^4 or R^4. Furthermore, we comment on Yau's theorem…
We study the $\mathcal{N}=6$ superconformal Chern-Simons matter field theory (the ABJM theory) conformally coupled to a Lorentzian, curved background spacetime. To support rigid supersymmetry, such backgrounds have to admit twistor spinors. At the classical level, the symmetry of the theory can be described by a conformal symmetry superalgebra. We show that the full $\mathcal{N}=6$ superconformal algebra persists at the quantum level using the BV-BRST method.
We introduce a Chern-Simons Lagrangian for Yang-Mills theory as formulated on ambitwistor space via the Ward, Isenberg, Yasskin, Green, Witten construction. The Lagrangian requires the selection of a codimension-2 Cauchy-Riemann submanifold which is naturally picked out by the choice of space-time reality structure and we focus on the choice of Euclidean signature. The action is shown to give rise to a space-time action that is equivalent to the standard one, but has just cubic vertices. We identify the ambitwistor propagators and vertices and work out their corresponding expressions on space-…
A U(2,2|4)-invariant A-model constructed from fermionic superfields has recently been proposed as a sigma model for the superstring on AdS_5xS^5. After explaining the relation of this A-model with the pure spinor formalism, the A-model action is expressed as a gauged linear sigma model. In the zero radius limit, the Coulomb branch of this sigma model is interpreted as D-brane holes which are related to gauge-invariant N=4 d=4 super-Yang-Mills operators. As in the worldsheet derivation of open-closed duality for Chern-Simons theory, this construction may lead to a worldsheet derivation of the M…
Geometry of the solution space of the self-dual Yang-Mills (SDYM) equations in Euclidean four-dimensional space is studied. Combining the twistor and group-theoretic approaches, we describe the full infinite-dimensional symmetry group of the SDYM equations and its action on the space of local solutions to the field equations. It is argued that owing to the relation to a holomorphic analogue of the Chern-Simons theory, the SDYM theory may be as solvable as 2D rational conformal field theories, and successful nonperturbative quantization may be developed. An algebra acting on the space of self-d…
The topological nature of Chern-Simons term describing the interaction of a charge with magnetic monopole is manifested in two ways: it changes the plane dynamical geometry of a free particle for the cone dynamical geometry without distorting the free (geodesic) character of the motion, and in the limit of zero charge's mass it describes a spin system. This observation allows us to interpret the charge-monopole system alternatively as a free particle of fixed spin with translational and spin degrees of freedom interacting via the helicity constraint, or as a symmetric spinning top with dynamic…
