We determine the S-matrix that describes scattering of arbitrary bound states in the light-cone string theory in AdS5 x S5. The corresponding construction relies on the Yangian symmetry and the superspace formalism for the bound state representations. The basic analytic structure supporting the S-matrix entries turns out to be the hypergeometric function 4F3. We show that for particular bound state numbers it reproduces all the scattering matrices previously obtained in the literature. Our findings should be relevant for the TBA and Luescher approaches to the finite-size spectral problem. They also shed some light on the construction of the universal R-matrix for the centrally-extended psu(2|2) superalgebra.
We clarify the relation between the vertex operators in type IIB matrix model and superstring. Green-Schwarz light-cone closed superstring theory is obtained from IIB matrix model on two dimensional noncommutative backgrounds. Superstring vertex operators should be reproduced from those of IIB matrix model through this connection. Indeed, we confirm that supergravity vertex operators in IIB matrix model on the two dimensional backgrounds reduce to those in superstring theory. Noncommutativity plays an important role in our identification. Through this correspondence, we can reproduce superstri…
We present evidence that the supersymmetric matrix model of Marinari and Parisi represents the world-line theory of N unstable D-particles in type II superstring theory in two dimensions. This identification suggests that the matrix model gives a holographic description of superstrings in a two-dimensional black hole geometry.
We show that, in the limit of zero string coupling, $g_s \to 0$, the thermodynamic partition function of matrix string theory is identical to that of the finite temperature, discrete light-cone quantised (DLCQ) type IIA superstring. We discuss how the superstring is recovered in the decompactified $R^+\to\infty$ limit.
We investigate the NBI matrix model with the potential $XΛ+X^{-1}+(2η+1)\log X$ recently proposed to describe IIB superstrings. With the proper normalization, using Virasoro constraints, we prove the equivalence of this model and the Kontsevich matrix model for $η\ne0$ and find the explicit transformation between the two models.
We study the dynamics of Green-Schwarz superstring on the gravitational wave background corresponding to the Matrix string theory and the supersymmetry transformation rules of the superstring. The dynamics is obtained in the light-cone formulation and is shown to agree with that derived from the Matrix string theory. The supersymmetry structure has the corrections due to the effect of the background and is identified with that of the low energy one-loop effective action of Matrix string theory in two superstring background in the weak string coupling limit.
We discuss properties of D-brane configurations in the matrix model of type IIB superstring recently proposed by Ishibashi, Kawai, Kitazawa and Tsuchiya. We calculate central charges in supersymmetry algebra at infinite N and associate them with one- and five-branes present in IIB superstring theory. We consider classical solutions associated with static three- and five-branes and calculate their interactions at one loop in the matrix model. We discuss some aspects of the matrix-model formulation of IIB superstring.
We show that the classical S-matrix calculated from the recently proposed superstring field theories give the correct perturbative S-matrix. In the proof we exploit the fact that the vertices are obtained by a field redefinition in the large Hilbert space. The result extends to include the NS-NS subsector of type II superstring field theory and the recently found equations of motions for the Ramond fields. In addition, our proof implies that the S-matrix obtained from Berkovits' WZW-like string field theory then agrees with the perturbative S-matrix to all orders.
We show that the tree-level S-matrices of the superstring field theories based on the homotopy-algebra structure agree with those obtained in the first-quantized formulation. The proof is given in detail for the heterotic string field theory. The extensions to the type II and open superstring field theories are straightforward.
I review the properties of a matrix action of relevance for IIB superstrings. This model generalizes the action proposed by Ishibashi, Kawai, Kitazawa, and Tsuchiya by introducing an auxillary field Y, which is the matrix version of the auxillary field g in the Schild action.
We apply the algebraic Bethe ansatz technique to compute the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix constructed from the general bound state S-matrix of the light-cone AdS5 x S5 superstring. This allows us to verify certain conjectures on the quantum characteristic function, and to extend them to the general case.
We address the problem of a non-perturbative formulation of superstring theory by means of the recently proposed matrix models. For the model by Ishibashi, Kawai, Kitazawa and Tsuchiya (IKKT), we perform one-loop calculation of the interaction between operator-like solutions identified with D-brane configurations of type IIB superstring (in particular, for parallel moving and rotated static p-branes). Comparing to the superstring calculations, we show that the matrix model reproduces the superstring results only at large distances or small velocities, corresponding to keeping only the lowest m…
We determine the off-shell symmetry algebra and representations of Type IIB superstring theory on $AdS_3\times S^3 \times T^4$ with mixed R-R and NS-NS three-form flux. We use these to derive the non-perturbative worldsheet S matrix of fundamental excitations of the superstring theory. Our analysis includes both massive and massless modes and shows how turning on mixed three-form flux results in an integrable deformation of the S matrix of the pure R-R theory.
We construct Green-Schwarz (GS) light-cone closed superstring theory from type IIB matrix model. A GS light-cone string action is derived from two dimensional N=8 U(n) noncommutative Yang-Mills (NCYM) by identifying noncommutative scale with string scale. Supersymmetry transformation for the light-cone gauge action is also derived from supersymmetry transformation for IIB matrix model. By identifying the physical states and interaction vertices, string theory is perturbatively reproduced.
We show that a recently proposed Yang-Mills matrix model with an auxiliary field, which is a candidate for a non-perturbative description of type IIB superstrings, captures the Euler characteristic of moduli space of Riemann surfaces. This happens at the saddle point for the Yang-Mills field. It turns out that the large-n limit in this matrix model corresponds to a double scaling limit in the Penner model.
These are short notes of three introductory lectures on recently proposed matrix models of Superstrings and M theory given at 5th Nordic Meeting on Supersymmetric Field and String Theories in Helsinki (March 10-12, 1997). We apply light-cone quantization to a $1+1$ dimensional supersymmetric field theory of large N matrices. We provide some preliminary numerical evidence that when the coupling constant is tuned to a critical value, this model describes a 2+1 dimensional non-critical superstring.
We compute the massive-sector worldsheet S-matrix for superstring theories in AdS(n) x S(n) x T(10-2n) (with n=2,3,5) in the near BMN expansion up to one-loop order in inverse string tension. We show that, after taking into account the wave function renormalization, the one-loop S-matrix is UV finite. In an appropriate regularization scheme the S-matrix is consistent with the underlying symmetries of the superstring theory, i.e. for the n=3,5 cases it coincides with the one implied by the light-cone gauge symmetries with the dressing phases determined from the crossing equations. For the n=2,3…
We present a class of solvable SO(D) symmetric matrix models with D bosonic matrices coupled to chiral fermions. The SO(D) symmetry is spontaneously broken due to the phase of the fermion integral. This demonstrates the conjectured mechanism for the dynamical generation of four-dimensional space-time in the IIB matrix model, which was proposed as a nonperturbative definition of type IIB superstring theory in ten dimensions.
In this paper we find the Yangian algebra responsible for the integrability of the AdS2 X S2 X T^6 superstring in the planar limit. We demonstrate the symmetry of the corresponding exact S-matrix in the massive sector, including the presence of the secret symmetry. We give two alternative presentations of the Hopf algebra, along with related discussions on the issue of evaluation representations. We study the classical r-matrix, and re-discover the need for a secret symmetry also in this context. Finally, taking the simplifying zero-coupling limit of the S-matrix as a generating R-matrix for t…
An S-matrix satisying the Yang-Baxter equation with symmetries relevant to the AdS_5xS^5 superstring has recently been determined up to an unknown scalar factor. Such scalar factors are typically fixed using crossing relations, however due to the lack of conventional relativistic invariance, in this case its determination remained an open problem. In this paper we propose an algebraic way to implement crossing relations for the AdS_5xS^5 superstring worldsheet S-matrix. We base our construction on a Hopf-algebraic formulation of crossing in terms of the antipode and introduce generalized rapid…
We calculate an effective action and measure induced by the integration over the auxiliary field in the matrix model recently proposed to describe IIB superstrings. It is shown that the measure of integration over the auxiliary matrix is uniquely determined by locality and reparametrization invariance of the resulting effective action. The large--$N$ limit of the induced measure for string coordinates is discussed in detail. It is found to be ultralocal and, thus, possibly is irrelevant in the continuum limit. The model of the GKM type is considered in relation to the effective action problem.
In the previous paper, the authors pointed out correspondence between a supersymmetric double-well matrix model and two-dimensional type IIA superstring theory on a Ramond-Ramond background from the viewpoint of symmetry and spectrum. This was confirmed by agreement between planar correlation functions in the matrix model and tree-level amplitudes in the superstring theory. In order to investigate the correspondence further, in this paper we compute correlation functions to all order of genus expansion in the double scaling limit of the matrix model. One-point functions of operators protected …
With a motivation to find a 2-d Lorentz-invariant solution of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring we continue the study of the Pohlmeyer-reduced form of this theory. The reduced theory is constructed from currents of the superstring sigma model and is classically equivalent to it. Its action is that of G/H=Sp(2,2)xSp(4)/SU(2)^4 gauged WZW model deformed by an integrable potential and coupled to fermions. This theory is UV finite and is conjectured to be related to the superstring theory also at the quantum level. Expanded near the trivial vacuum it has the same elementary excitations (8+8 massive boso…
Multi-cut two-matrix models are studied in the Z_k symmetry breaking k-cut (\hat p,\hat q) critical points which should correspond to (\hat p,\hat q) minimal k-fractional superstring theory. FZZT-brane or macroscopic loop amplitudes are obtained in all of these critical points and found to have two kinds of solutions in general. Each of these solutions is expressed by hyperbolic cosine or sine functions with proper phase shifts. The algebraic geometries and ZZ-brane disk amplitudes (instanton actions) of these solutions are also studied. In particular, our results suggest that minimal \infty-f…
We construct a kappa-symmetric Green-Schwarz action for type IIA string theory on AdS_2. As a candidate holographic dual, we consider superconformal matrix quantum mechanics, given by the Marinari-Parisi model with vanishing or logarithmic superpotential. We derive that the super-eigenvalues form a consistent subsector, and that their dynamics reduces to that of the supersymmetric Calogero-Moser model. The classical string action and the matrix model both have an infinite set of conserved charges, that include an N=2 target space super-Virasoro symmetry. As a microscopic test of the duality, w…
In this article we review the world-sheet scattering theory of strings on AdS 5 x S5. The asymptotic spectrum of this world-sheet theory contains both fundamental particles and bound states of the latter. We explicitly derive the S-matrix that describes scattering of arbitrary bound states. The key feature that enables this derivation is the so-called Yangian symmetry which is related to the centrally extended su(2|2) superalgebra. Subsequently, we study the universal algebraic properties of the found S-matrix. As in many integrable models, the S-matrix plays a key role in the determination of…
We show that the recently found S-matrices describing the scattering of two-particle bound states of the light-cone string sigma model on AdS5 x S5 are compatible with Yangian symmetry. In case the invariance with respect to the centrally extended su(2|2) algebra is not sufficient to fully specify the scattering matrix, the requirement of Yangian symmetry provides an alternative to the Yang-Baxter equation and leads to a complete, up to an overall phase, determination of the S-matrix. We then compare the semi-classical limit of the bound state S-matrices with the universal classical r-matrix b…
The type IIB supergravity AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 background with mixed RR and NSNS 3-form fluxes is a near-horizon limit of a non-threshold bound state of D5-D1 and NS5-NS1 branes. The corresponding superstring world-sheet theory is expected to be integrable, opening the possibility of computing its exact spectrum for any values of the coefficient q of the NSNS flux and the string tension. In arXiv:1303.1447 we have found the tree-level S-matrix for the massive BMN excitations in this theory, which turned out to have a simple dependence on q. Here, by analyzing the constraints of symmetry and integ…
We study the fatgraph expansion for the Complex Matrix Quantum Mechanics (CMQM) with a Chern-Simons coupling. In the double-scaling limit this model is believed to describe Type 0A superstrings in 1+1 dimensions in a Ramond-Ramond electric field. With Euclidean time compactified, we show that the RR electric field acts as a chemical potential for vortices living on the Feynman diagrams of the CMQM. We interpret it as evidence that the CMQM Feynman diagrams discretize the NSR formulation of the noncritical Type 0A superstring. We also study T-duality for the CMQM diagrams and propose that a cer…
We study the Lorentzian version of the type IIB matrix model as a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory in (9+1)-dimensions. Monte Carlo results show that not only space but also time emerges dynamically in this model. Furthermore, the real-time dynamics extracted from the matrices turns out to be remarkable: 3 out of 9 spatial directions start to expand at some critical time. This can be interpreted as the birth of our Universe.
We derive Schwinger-Dyson equations for the Wilson loops of a type IIB matrix model. Superstring coordinates are introduced through the construction of the loop space. We show that the continuum limit of the loop equation reproduces the light-cone superstring field theory of type IIB superstring in the large-N limit. We find that the interacting string theory can be obtained in the double scaling limit as it is expected.
In the previous paper, the authors pointed out correspondence of a supersymmetric double-well matrix model with two-dimensional type IIA superstring theory on a nontrivial Ramond-Ramond background from the viewpoint of symmetries and spectrum. In this paper we further investigate the correspondence from dynamical aspects by comparing scattering amplitudes in the matrix model and those in the type IIA theory. In the latter, cocycle factors are introduced to vertex operators in order to reproduce correct transformation laws and target-space statistics. By a perturbative treatment of the Ramond-R…
We consider the monodromy matrix for the pure spinor IIB superstring on $AdS_5\times S^5$ at leading order at strong coupling, in particular its variation under an infinitesimal and continuous deformation of the contour. Such variation is equivalent to the insertion of a local operator. Demanding the BRST-closure for such an operator rules out its existence, implying that the monodromy matrix remains contour-independent at the first order in perturbation theory. Furthermore we explicitly compute the field strength corresponding to the flat connections up to leading order and directly check tha…
We show that the supersymmetric Wilson loops in IIB matrix model give a transition operator from reduced supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory to supersymmetric space-time theory. In comparison with Green-Schwarz superstring we identify the supersymmetric Wilson loops with the asymptotic states of IIB superstring. It is pointed out that the supersymmetry transformation law of the Wilson loops is the inverse of that for the vertex operators of massless modes in the U(N) open superstring with Dirichlet boundary condition.
In type IIB light-cone superstring field theory, the cubic interaction has two pieces: a delta-functional overlap and an operator inserted at the interaction point. In this paper we extend our earlier work hep-th/0204146 by computing the matrix elements of this operator in the oscillator basis of pp-wave string theory for all mu p^+ alpha'. By evaluating these matrix elements for large mu p^+ alpha', we check a recent conjecture relating matrix elements of the light-cone string field theory Hamiltonian (with prefactor) to certain three-point functions of BMN operators in the gauge theory. We a…
Path integral for the closed superstring and the matrix model

We propose random matrix models which have $N=\half$ supersymmetry in zero dimension. The supersymmetry breaks down spontaneously. It is shown that the double scaling limit can be defined in these models and the breakdown of the supersymmetry remains in the continuum limit. The exact non-trivial partition functions of the string theories corresponding to these matrix models are also obtained.
We consider double-scaling limits of multicut solutions of certain one matrix models that are related to Calabi-Yau singularities of type A and the respective topological B model via the Dijkgraaf-Vafa correspondence. These double-scaling limits naturally lead to a bosonic string with c $\leq$ 1. We argue that this non-critical string is given by the topologically twisted non-critical superstring background which provides the dual description of the double-scaled little string theory at the Calabi-Yau singularity. The algorithms developed recently to solve a generic multicut matrix model by me…
In the previous papers, the authors pointed out correspondence between a supersymmetric double-well matrix model and two-dimensional type IIA superstring theory on a Ramond-Ramond background. This was confirmed by agreement between planar correlation functions in the matrix model and tree-level amplitudes in the superstring theory. Furthermore, in the matrix model we computed one-point functions of single-trace operators to all orders of genus expansion in its double scaling limit, and found that the large-order behavior of this expansion is stringy and not Borel summable. In this paper, we di…
In this note, we first explain the equivalence between the interaction Hamiltonian of Green-Schwarz light-cone gauge superstring field theory and the twist field formalism known from matrix string theory. We analyze the role of the large N limit in matrix string theory, in particular in relation with conformal perturbation theory around the orbifold SCFT that reproduces light-cone string perturbation theory. We show how the scaling with N is directly related to measures on the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. The scaling dimension 3 of the Mandelstam vertex as reproduced by the twist field in…
We investigate the worldsheet S matrix of string theory in $η$-deformed $AdS_5\times S^5$. By computing the six-point tree-level S matrix we explicitly show that there is no particle production at this level, as required by the classical integrability of the theory. At one and two loops we show that integrability requires that the classical two-particle states be redefined in a non-local and $η$-dependent way. This is a significant departure from the undeformed theory which is probably related to the quantum group symmetry of the worldsheet theory. We use generalized unitarity to carry out the…
We review recent developments in the construction of heterotic and type II string field theories and their various applications. These include systematic procedures for determining the shifts in the vacuum expectation values of fields under quantum corrections, computing renormalized masses and S-matrix of the theory around the shifted vacuum and a proof of unitarity of the S-matrix. The S-matrix computed this way is free from all divergences when there are more than 4 non-compact space-time dimensions, but suffers from the usual infrared divergences when the number of non-compact space-time d…
The Poisson algebra of the Lax matrix associated with the Pohlmeyer reduction of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring is computed from first principles. The resulting non-ultralocality is mild, which enables to write down a corresponding lattice Poisson algebra.
We reconsider the matrix model formulation of type IIB superstring theory in (9+1)-dimensional space-time. Unlike the previous proposal in which the Wick rotation was used to make the model well-defined, we regularize the Lorentzian model by introducing infrared cutoffs in both the spatial and temporal directions. Monte Carlo studies reveal that the two cutoffs can be removed in the large-N limit and that the theory thus obtained has no parameters other than one scale parameter. Moreover, we find that three out of nine spatial directions start to expand at some "critical time", after which the…
We explicitly compute nonperturbative effects in a supersymmetric double-well matrix model corresponding to two-dimensional type IIA superstring theory on a nontrivial Ramond-Ramond background. We analytically determine the full one-instanton contribution to the free energy and one-point function, including all perturbative fluctuations around the one-instanton background. The leading order two-instanton contribution is determined as well. We see that supersymmetry is spontaneously broken by instantons, and that the breaking persists after taking a double scaling limit which realizes the type …
Recently we have shown by Monte Carlo simulation that expanding (3+1)-dimensional universe appears dynamically from a Lorentzian matrix model for type IIB superstring theory in (9+1)-dimensions. The mechanism for the spontaneous breaking of rotational symmetry relies crucially on the noncommutative nature of the space. Here we study the classical equations of motion as a complementary approach. In particular, we find a unique class of SO(3) symmetric solutions, which exhibits the time-dependence compatible with the expanding universe. The space-space noncommutativity is exactly zero, whereas t…
We study the recently discovered q-deformed Poincare' supersymmetry of the AdS_3/CFT_2 integrable massless scattering, and demonstrate how the S-matrix is invariant under boosts. The boost generator has a non-local coproduct, which acts on the scattering matrix as a differential operator, annihilating it. We propose to reinterpret the boost action in terms of covariant derivatives on bundles, and derive an expression for the S-matrix as the path-ordered exponential of a flat connection. We provide a list of possible alternative interpretations of this emergent geometric picture, including a on…
We show that the M-theory/IIA and IIA/IIB superstring dualities together with the diffeomorphism invariance of the underlying theories require the presence of certain p-brane bound states in IIA and IIB superstring theories preserving 1/2 of the spacetime supersymmetry. We then confirm the existence of IIA and IIB supergravity solutions having the appropriate p-brane bound states interpretation.
We present a novel framework for simulating matrix models on a quantum computer. Supersymmetric matrix models have natural applications to superstring/M-theory and gravitational physics, in an appropriate limit of parameters. Furthermore, for certain states in the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) matrix model, several supersymmetric quantum field theories dual to superstring/M-theory can be realized on a quantum device. Our prescription consists of four steps: regularization of the Hilbert space, adiabatic state preparation, simulation of real-time dynamics, and measurements. Regularization …
The conventional S-matrix approach to the (tree level) open string low energy effective lagrangian assumes that, in order to obtain all its bosonic ${α'}^N$ order terms, it is necessary to know the open string (tree level) $(N+2)$-point amplitude of massless bosons, at least expanded at that order in $α'$. In this work we clarify that the previous claim is indeed valid for the bosonic open string, but for the supersymmetric one the situation is much more better than that: there are constraints in the kinematical bosonic terms of the amplitude (probably due to Spacetime Supersymmetry) such that…
We investigate the structure of the quantum S-matrix for perturbative excitations of the Pohlmeyer reduced version of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring following arXiv:0912.2958. The reduced theory is a fermionic extension of a gauged WZW model with an integrable potential. We use as an input the result of the one-loop perturbative scattering amplitude computation and an analogy with simpler reduced AdS_n x S^n theories with n=2,3. The n=2 theory is equivalent to the N=2 2-d supersymmetric sine-Gordon model for which the exact quantum S-matrix is known. In the n=3 case the one-loop perturbative S-ma…
We review and develop the formalism of ghost number cohomologies, outlined in our previous work, to classify the quantum states of M-theory. We apply this formalism to the matrix formulation of M-theory to obtain NSR superstring action from dimensionally reduced matrix model. The BPS condition of the matrix theory is related to the worldsheet reparametrizational invariance in superstring theory, underlining the connection between unbroken supersymmetries in M-theory and superstring gauge symmetries.
We study the origins of the five ten-dimensional ``matrix superstring'' theories, supplementing old results with new ones, and find that they all fit into a unified framework. In all cases the matrix definition of the string in the limit of vanishingly small coupling is a trivial 1+1 dimensional infra-red fixed point (an orbifold conformal field theory) characterized uniquely by matrix versions of the appropriate Green-Schwarz action. The Fock space of the matrix string is built out of winding T-dual strings. There is an associated dual supergravity description in terms of the near horizon geo…
The investigation of the q deformation of the S-matrix for excitations on the string world sheet in AdS5 x S5 is continued. We argue that due to the lack of Lorentz invariance the situation is more subtle than in a relativistic theory in that the nature of bound states depends on their momentum. At low enough momentum |p|<E the bound states transform in the anti-symmetric representation of the super-algebra symmetry and become the solitons of the Pohlmeyer reduced theory in the relativistic limit. At a critical momentum |p|=E they become marginally unstable, and at higher momenta the stable bo…
We consider the action of the $q$-deformed Poincaré superalgebra on the massless non-relativistic R-matrix in ordinary (undeformed) integrable $AdS_2 \times S^2 \times T^6$ type IIB superstring theory. The boost generator acts non-trivially on the R-matrix, confirming the existence of a non-relativistic rapidity $γ$ with respect to which the R-matrix must be of difference form. We conjecture that from a massless AdS/CFT integrable relativistic R-matrix one can obtain the parental massless non-relativistic R-matrix simply by replacing the relativistic rapidity with $γ$. We check our conjecture …
In the low-energy effective action of string theories, non-abelian gauge interactions and supergravity are augmented by infinite towers of higher-mass-dimension operators. We propose a new method to construct one-loop matrix elements with insertions of operators $D^{2k} F^n$ and $D^{2k} R^n$ in the tree-level effective action of type-I and type-II superstrings. Inspired by ambitwistor string theories, our method is based on forward limits of moduli-space integrals using string tree-level amplitudes with two extra points, expanded in powers of the inverse string tension $α'$. Similar to one-loo…
We study the properties of the space-time that emerges dynamically from the matrix model for type IIB superstrings in ten dimensions. We calculate the free energy and the extent of space-time using the Gaussian expansion method up to the third order. Unlike previous works, we study the SO(d) symmetric vacua with all possible values of d within the range $2 \le d \le 7$, and observe clear indication of plateaus in the parameter space of the Gaussian action, which is crucial for the results to be reliable. The obtained results indeed exhibit systematic dependence on d, which turns out to be surp…
