We show that the recently found S-matrices describing the scattering of two-particle bound states of the light-cone string sigma model on AdS5 x S5 are compatible with Yangian symmetry. In case the invariance with respect to the centrally extended su(2|2) algebra is not sufficient to fully specify the scattering matrix, the requirement of Yangian symmetry provides an alternative to the Yang-Baxter equation and leads to a complete, up to an overall phase, determination of the S-matrix. We then compare the semi-classical limit of the bound state S-matrices with the universal classical r-matrix by Beisert and Spill evaluated in the corresponding bound state representations and find perfect agreement.
We discuss the relation between the recently derived bound state S-matrices for the AdS5 x S5 superstring and Yangian symmetry. We will study the relation between this Yangian symmetry and the Bethe ansatz. In particular we can use it to derive the Bethe equations for bound states.
We construct infinite number of conserved nonlocal charges for type IIB superstring on the AdS5xS5 space in the conformal gauge without assuming any kappa gauge fixing, and show that they satisfy the super Yangian algebra. The resultant algebra is the same as our previous work, where a special gauge was assumed in such a way that the Noether current satisfies a flatness condition. However the flatness condition for the Noether current of a superstring on the AdS space is broken in general. We show that the anomalous contribution is absorbed into the current where fermionic constraints play an …
We discuss a classical integrability in the type IIB string theory on the AdS_5 x S^5 background. By using the Roiban-Siegel formulation of the superstring on the AdS_5 x S^5, we carefully treat the Wess-Zumino term and the constraint conditions intrinsic to the supersymmetric case, and construct explicitly non-local charges for a hidden infinite-dimensional symmetry. The existence of the symmetry is shown by Bena-Polchinski-Roiban. Then the super Yangian algebra is calculated. We also show the Serre relation ensuring the structure of the Hopf algebra. In addition, the classical integrability …
We establish features of so-called Yangian secret symmetries for AdS3 type IIB superstring backgrounds thus verifying the persistence of such symmetries to this new instance of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Specifically, we find two a priori different classes of secret symmetry generators. One class of generators, anticipated from the previous literature, is more naturally embedded in the algebra governing the integrable scattering problem. The other class of generators is more elusive, and somewhat closer in its form to its higher-dimensional AdS5 counterpart. All of these symmetries respect le…
We find the Yangian symmetry underlying the integrability of type IIB superstrings on $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times S^3 \times S^1$ with mixed Ramond-Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz flux. The abstract commutation relations of the Yangian are formulated via RTT realisation, while its matrix realisation is in an evaluation representation depending on the quantised coefficient of the Wess-Zumino term. The construction naturally encodes a secret symmetry of the worldsheet scattering matrix whose generators map different Yangian levels to each other. We show that in the large effective string ten…
We point out that an infinite class of Witten diagrams is invariant under a Yangian symmetry. These diagrams are building blocks of holographic correlators and are related by a web of differential recursion relations. We show that Yangian invariance is equivalent to the consistency conditions of the recursion relations.
Recent developments in the determination of the planar S-matrix of N=4 Super Yang-Mills are closely related to its Yangian symmetry. Here we provide evidence for a yet unobserved additional symmetry: the Yangian level-one helicity operator.
Three introductory lectures: on Yangians and their representations; on Yangian symmetry in 1+1D integrable (bulk) field theory; and on the effect of a boundary upon this symmetry.
We compute the $r$-matrix for the elliptic Euler-Calogero-Moser model. In the trigonometric limit we show that the model possesses an exact Yangian symmetry.
The reflection matrices of multi magnon bound states are obtained explicitely by exploiting the Yangian symmetry of boundary scattering on the Y=0 maximal giant graviton brane.
We present the `Heisenberg picture' of the reflection algebra by explicitly constructing the boundary Yangian symmetry of an AdS/CFT superstring which ends on a boundary with non-trivial degrees of freedom and which preserves the full bulk Lie symmetry algebra. We also consider the spectrum of bulk and boundary states and some automorphisms of the underlying algebras.
We present the perturbative Yangian symmetry at next-to-leading order in the su(2|1) sector of planar N=4 SYM. Just like the ordinary symmetry generators, the bi-local Yangian charges receive corrections acting on several neighboring sites. We confirm that the bi-local Yangian charges satisfy the necessary conditions: they transform in the adjoint of su(2|1), they commute with the dilatation generator, and they satisfy the Serre relations. This proves that the sector is integrable at two loops.
We will discuss an integrable structure for weakly coupled superconformal Yang-Mills theories, describe certain equivalences for the Yangian algebra, and fill a technical gap in our previous study of this subject.
It is known that the Yangian of PSU(2,2|4) is a symmetry of the tree-level S-matrix of N=4 super Yang-Mills. On the other hand, the complete one-loop dilatation operator in the same theory commutes with the level-one Yangian generators only up to certain boundary terms found by Dolan, Nappi and Witten. Using a result by Zwiebel, we show how the Yangian symmetry of the tree-level S-matrix of N=4 super Yang-Mills implies precisely the Yangian invariance, up to boundary terms, of the one-loop dilatation operator.
We show that a certain class of light-like Wilson loops exhibits a Yangian symmetry at one loop, or equivalently, in an Abelian theory. The Wilson loops we discuss are equivalent to one-loop MHV amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in a certain kinematical regime. The fact that we find a Yangian symmetry constraining their functional form can be thought of as the effect of the original conformal symmetry associated to the scattering amplitudes in the N=4 theory.
We consider the problem of boundary scattering for Y=0 maximal giant graviton branes. We show that the boundary S-matrix for the fundamental excitations has a Yangian symmetry. We then exploit this symmetry to determine the boundary S-matrix for two-particle bound states. We verify that this boundary S-matrix satisfies the boundary Yang-Baxter equations.
We study the remnants of Yangian symmetry of AdS/CFT magnons reflecting from boundaries with no degrees of freedom. We present the generalized twisted boundary Yangian of open strings ending on boundaries which preserve only a subalgebra h of the bulk algebra g, where (g,h) is a symmetric pair. This is realized by open strings ending on the D3 brane known as the Y=0 maximal giant graviton in AdS_5 x S^5. We also consider the Yangian symmetry of the boundary which preserves an su(1|2) subalgebra only.
We demonstrate that world-volume actions describing probe branes in anti de Sitter space have an infinite-dimensional symmetry algebra that is reminiscent of Yangian symmetry. Two essential ingredients are responsible for this symmetry. The first is an inversion symmetry of anti de Sitter space. The second is the compensating gauge transformations that are required to properly describe global symmetries after gauge fixing the general coordinate invariance.
The existence of non-local charges, generating a Yangian symmetry is discussed in generalized chiral Gross-Neveu models. Their conservation can be proven by a finite-loop perturbative computation, the order of which is determined from group theoretic constants and is independent of the number of flavors. Examples, where the 1-loop calculation is sufficient, include the SO(n)-models and other more exotic groups and representations.
Tree-level scattering amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory have recently been shown to transform covariantly with respect to a 'dual' superconformal symmetry algebra, thus extending the conventional superconformal symmetry algebra psu(2,2|4) of the theory. In this paper we derive the action of the dual superconformal generators in on-shell superspace and extend the dual generators suitably to leave scattering amplitudes invariant. We then study the algebra of standard and dual symmetry generators and show that the inclusion of the dual superconformal generators lifts the psu(2,2|4) symmet…
In this paper we review recent results on symmetries in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Symmetries are of invaluable help in studying and constraining the scattering amplitudes, and there has been a lot of progress in recent years concerning this topic. It has been realised that the ordinary superconformal symmetry is not the full symmetry of this theory. There is indeed a dual superconformal symmetry, and together they form a Yangian structure, pointing to the underlying integrability of the theory. Here we give an overview of the Yangian algebra and of its action on the scattering amplitudes, a…
We show that appropriately supersymmetrized smooth Maldacena-Wilson loop operators in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory are invariant under a Yangian symmetry Y[psu(2,2|4)] built upon the manifest superconformal symmetry algebra of the theory. The existence of this hidden symmetry is demonstrated at the one-loop order in the weak coupling limit as well as at leading order in the strong coupling limit employing the classical integrability of the dual AdS_5 x S^5 string description. The hidden symmetry generators consist of a canonical non-local second order variational derivative piece acting on the …
Planar N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory appears to be perturbatively integrable. This work reviews integrability in terms of a Yangian algebra and compares the application to the problems of anomalous dimensions and scattering amplitudes.
Integrability is believed to underlie the AdS3/CFT2 correspondence with sixteen supercharges. We elucidate the role of massless modes within this integrable framework. Firstly, we find the dressing factors that enter the massless and mixed-mass worldsheet S matrix. Secondly, we derive a set of all-loop Bethe Equations for the closed strings, determine their symmetries and weak-coupling limit. Thirdly, we investigate the underlying Yangian symmetry in the massless sector and show that it fits into the general framework of Yangian integrability. In addition, we compare our S matrix in the near-r…
In the su(2|2) spin chain motivated by the AdS/CFT correspondence, a novel symmetry extending the superalgebra su(2|2) into u(2|2) was found. We pursue the origin of this symmetry in the exceptional superalgebra d(2,1;epsilon), which recovers su(2|2) when the parameter epsilon is taken to zero. Especially, we rederive the Yangian symmetries of the AdS/CFT spin chain using the exceptional superalgebra and find that the epsilon-correction corresponds to the novel symmetry. Also, we reproduce the non-canonical classical r-matrix of the AdS/CFT spin chain expressed with this symmetry from the cano…
The existence of a "bonus" U(1) level-one Yangian symmetry of N=4 super-Yang-Mills has recently been proposed. We provide evidence for this proposal by constructing the BRST-invariant nonlocal charge in the pure spinor sigma model corresponding to this bonus level-one symmetry. We also construct analogous charges for bonus U(1) symmetries at all odd levels of the Yangian.
In this paper we analyse formulas which reproduce different contributions to scattering amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory through a Grassmannian integral. Recently their Yangian invariance has been proved directly by using the explicit expression of the Yangian level-one generators. The specific cyclic structure of the form integrated over the Grassmannian enters in a crucial way in demonstrating the symmetry. Here we show that the Yangian symmetry fixes this structure uniquely.
The Yangian symmetry Y(su($n$)) of the Calogero-Sutherland-Moser spin model is reconsidered. The Yangian generators are constructed from two non-commuting su($n$)-loop algebras. The latters generate an infinite dimensional symmetry algebra which is a deformation of the $W_\infty$-algebra. We show that this deformed $W_\infty$-algebra contains an infinite number of Yangian subalgebras with different deformation parameters.
We present the algebraic framework for the quantization of the classical bosonic charge algebra of maximally extended (N=16) supergravity in two dimensions, thereby taking the first steps towards an exact quantization of this model. At the core of our construction is the Yangian algebra $Y(e_8)$ whose RTT presentation we discuss in detail. The full symmetry algebra is a centrally extended twisted version of the Yangian double $DY(e_8)_c$. We show that there exists only one special value of the central charge for which the quantum algebra admits an ideal by which the algebra can be divided so a…
We investigate the Yangian symmetry of scattering amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and show that its formulations in twistor and momentum twistor space can be interchanged. In particular we show that the full symmetry can be thought of as the Yangian of the dual superconformal algebra, annihilating the amplitude with the MHV part factored out. The equivalence of this picture with the one where the ordinary superconformal symmetry is thought of as fundamental is an algebraic expression of T-duality. Motivated by this, we analyse some recently proposed formulas, which reproduce differen…
In the quantized two-dimensional non-linear supersymmetric $σ$-model, the supercurrent supermultiplet, which contains the energy-momentum tensor, is transformed by the nonlocal symmetry of the model into the isospin current supermultiplet. This effect incorporates supersymmetry into the known infinite-dimensional Yangian deformation symmetry of plain $σ$-models, leads to precisely the same nontrivial extension of the two-dimensional super-Poincaré group as found previously for the Poincaré group, and thus determines the theory's mass spectrum. A generalization to all higher-order nonlocal char…
Tree-level scattering amplitudes in planar N=4 super Yang-Mills are known to be Yangian-invariant. It has been shown that integrability allows to obtain a general, explicit method to find such invariants. The uplifting of this result to the amplituhedron construction has been an important open problem. In this paper, with the help of methods proper to integrable theories, we successfully fill this gap and clarify the meaning of Yangian invariance for the tree-level amplituhedron. In particular, we construct amplituhedron volume forms from an underlying spin chain. As a by-product of this const…
In this article we review the world-sheet scattering theory of strings on AdS 5 x S5. The asymptotic spectrum of this world-sheet theory contains both fundamental particles and bound states of the latter. We explicitly derive the S-matrix that describes scattering of arbitrary bound states. The key feature that enables this derivation is the so-called Yangian symmetry which is related to the centrally extended su(2|2) superalgebra. Subsequently, we study the universal algebraic properties of the found S-matrix. As in many integrable models, the S-matrix plays a key role in the determination of…
It was shown that the spin chain model coming from AdS/CFT correspondence satisfies the Yangian symmetry if we assume evaluation representation, though so far there is no explicit proof that the evaluation representation satisfies the Serre relation, which is one of the defining equations of the Yangian algebra imposing constraints on the whole algebraic structure. We prove completely that the evaluation representation adopted in the model satisfies the Serre relation by introducing a three-dimensional gamma matrix. After studying the Serre relation, we proceed to the whole Yangian algebraic s…
Quantum gravity in AdS$_7 \times$S$^4$ is dual to a 6d superconformal field theory, known as the 6d $(2,0)$ theory, which is very challenging to describe because it lacks a conventional Lagrangian description. On the other hand, certain null reductions of the 6d $(2,0)$ theory give rise to 5d Lagrangian theories with $SU(1,3)$ spacetime symmetry, $SO(5)$ R-symmetry, and 24 supercharges. This appears to be closely related to the superconformal group of a 3d superconformal Chern-Simons theory known as the ABJM theory, which is believed to be integrable in the planar limit, if one exchanges the r…
In this paper we find the Yangian algebra responsible for the integrability of the AdS2 X S2 X T^6 superstring in the planar limit. We demonstrate the symmetry of the corresponding exact S-matrix in the massive sector, including the presence of the secret symmetry. We give two alternative presentations of the Hopf algebra, along with related discussions on the issue of evaluation representations. We study the classical r-matrix, and re-discover the need for a secret symmetry also in this context. Finally, taking the simplifying zero-coupling limit of the S-matrix as a generating R-matrix for t…
In this paper we derive the universal R-matrix for the Yangian Y(u(2|2)), which is an abstract algebraic object leading to rational solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation on representations. We find that on the fundamental representation the universal R-matrix reduces to the standard rational R-matrix R = R_0(1 + P/u), where the scalar prefactor is surprisingly simple compared to prefactors one finds e.g. for sl(n) R-matrices. This leads precisely to the S-matrix giving the Bethe Ansatz of one-loop N = 4 Super Yang-Mills theory and two-loop N = 6 Chern-Simons theory.
We perform a Hamiltonian analysis of the classical type IIB superstring on AdS(5) x S(5) in the pure spinor approach. Taking the spatial components of the left-invariant (super)currents and the pure spinor ghosts as canonical variables, we compute the classical graded Poisson brackets of the currents and ghosts and identify the first class constraints associated to the local SO(4,1) x SO(5) symmetry and the pure spinor condition. We then study the properties of the BRST generators and the Hamiltonian along the constraints. For a natural choice of the the Lagrange multipliers, we show equivalen…
We review recent progress in the understanding of symmetries for scattering amplitudes in N=4 superconformal Yang-Mills theory. It is summarized how the superficial breaking of superconformal symmetry by collinear anomalies and the renormalization process can be cured at tree and loop level. This is achieved by correcting the representation of the superconformal group on amplitudes. Moreover, we comment on the Yangian symmetry of scattering amplitudes and how it inherits these correction terms from the ordinary Lie algebra symmetry. Invariants under this algebra and their relation to the Grass…
We perform a detailed study of the Yangian symmetry of smooth supersymmetric Maldacena-Wilson loops in planar N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. This hidden symmetry extends the global superconformal symmetry present for these observables. A gauge-covariant action of the Yangian generators on the Wilson line is established that generalizes previous constructions built upon path variations. Employing these generators the Yangian symmetry is proven for general paths in non-chiral N=4 superspace at the first perturbative order. The bi-local piece of the level-one generators requires the use of a regula…
An interesting type of spin chain has appeared in the context of the planar AdS/CFT correspondence: It is based on an integrable nearest-neighbor spin chain, and it is perturbatively deformed by long-range interactions which apparently preserve the integrable structure. Similar models can be constructed by demanding the existence of merely one conserved local charge. Although the latter is not a sufficient integrability condition in general, the models often display convincing signs of full integrability. Here we consider a class of long-range spin chains with spins transforming in the fundame…
We present two pairs of Y($sl_2$) Yangian symmetries for the trigonometric and hyperbolic versions of the Hubbard model with non-nearest-neighbour hopping. In both cases the Yangians are mutually commuting, hence can be combined into a Y($sl_2$)$\oplus$Y($sl_2$) Yangian. Their mutual commutativity is of dynamical origin. The known Yangians of the Haldane-Shastry spin chain and the nearest neighbour Hubbard model are contained as limiting cases of our new representations.

We discovered new hidden symmetry of the one-dimensional Hubbard model. We showthat the one-dimensional Hubbard model on the infinite chain has the infinite-dimensional algebra of symmetries. This algebra is a direct sum of two $ sl(2) $-Yangians. This $ Y(sl(2)) \oplus Y(sl(2)) $ symmetry is an extension of the well-known $ sl(2) \oplus sl(2) $ . The deformation parameters of the Yangians are equal up to the signs to the coupling constant of the Hubbard model hamiltonian.
We find a new quantum Yangian symmetry of the AdS/CFT S-matrix, which complements the original su(2|2) symmetry to gl(2|2) and does not have a Lie algebra analog. Our finding is motivated by the Yangian double structure discovered at the classical level.
We show that the $SU(N)$, level-1 Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory provides a natural realization of the Yangian $Y(sl_N)$ for $N\geq 3$. We also construct a hamiltonian $H_2$ which commutes with the Yangian generators and study its spectrum. Our results, which generalize work by Haldane et al.\ \cite{hhtbp}, provide the field theory extension of the algebraic structure of the $SU(N)$ Haldane-Shastry spin chains with $1/r^2$ exchange.
We show that, in the open Hubbard model with integrable boundary conditions, the bulk Yangian symmetry is broken to a twisted Yangian. We prove that the associated charges commute with the Hamiltonian and the reflection matrix, and that they form a coideal subalgebra.
We present a self-contained formulation of the Nonlinear Schrodinger hierarchy and its Yangian symmetry in terms of deformed oscilator algebra (Z.F. algebra). The link between Yangian Y(gl(N)) and finite W(gl(pN),N.gl(p)) algebras is also illustrated in this framework.
The Yangian level-one hypercharge generator for the super Wilson loop in N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is constructed. Moreover, evidence for the presence of a corresponding symmetry generator at all higher levels is provided. The derivation is restricted to the strong-coupling description of the super Wilson loop and based on the construction of novel conserved charges for type IIB superstrings on AdS_5 x S^5.
Dimensional reduction of various gravity and supergravity models leads to effectively two-dimensional field theories described by gravity coupled G/H coset space sigma-models. The transition matrices of the associated linear system provide a complete set of conserved charges. Their Poisson algebra is a semi-classical Yangian double modified by a twist which is a remnant of the underlying coset structure. The classical Geroch group is generated by the Lie-Poisson action of these charges. Canonical quantization of the structure leads to a twisted Yangian double with fixed central extension at a …
Recently it has been argued that tree-level scattering amplitudes in N=4 Yang-Mills theory are uniquely determined by a careful study of their superconformal and Yangian symmetries. However, at one-loop order these symmetries are known to become anomalous due to infrared divergences. We compute these one-loop anomalies for amplitudes defined through dimensional regularisation by studying the tree-level symmetry transformations of the unitarity branch cuts, keeping track of the crucial collinear terms arising from the holomorphic anomaly. We extract the superconformal anomalies and show that th…
Yangian symmetric correlators provide a tool to investigate integrability features of QCD at high energies. We discuss the kernel of the equation of perturbative Regge asymptotics, the kernels of the evolution equation of parton distributions, Born scattering amplitudes and coupling renormalization.
We study the Yangian symmetry of the multicomponent Quantum Nonlinear Schrodinger hierarchy in the framework of the Quantum Inverse Scattering Method. We give an explicit realization of the Yangian generators in terms of the deformed oscillators algebra which naturally occurs in this framework.
We express the classical r-matrix of AdS/CFT in terms of tensor products involving an infinite family of generators, which takes a form suggestive of the universal expression obtained from a Yangian double. This should provide an insight into the structure of the infinite dimensional symmetry algebra underlying the integrability of the model, and give a clue to the construction of its universal R-matrix. We derive the commutation relations under which the algebra of these new generators close.
Correlators based on $s\ell_2$ Yangian symmetry and its quantum deformation are studied. Symmetric integral operators can be defined with such correlators as kernels. Yang-Baxter operators can be represented in this way. Particular Yangian symmetric correlators are related to the kernels of QCD parton evolution. The solution of the eigenvalue problem of Yangian symmetric operators is described.
We identify certain blocks in the S-matrix describing the scattering of bound states of the AdS5 x S5 superstring that allow for a representation in terms of universal R-matrices of Yangian doubles. For these cases, we use the formulas for Drinfeld's second realization of the Yangian in arbitrary bound-state representations to obtain the explicit expressions for the corresponding R-matrices. We then show that these expressions perfectly match with the previously obtained S-matrix blocks.
We have calculated the high spin parton splitting amplitudes postulating the Yangian symmetry of the scattering amplitudes for tensorgluons. The resulting splitting amplitudes coincide with the earlier calculations, which were based on the BCFW recursion relations. The resulting formula unifies all known splitting probabilities found earlier in gauge field theories. It describes splitting probabilities for integer and half-integer spin particles. We also checked that the splitting probabilities fulfil generalised Kounnas-Ross N=1 supersymmetry relations hinting to the fact that the underlying …
We develop the quantum inverse scattering method for the one-dimensional Hubbard model on the infinite interval at zero density. $R$-matrix and monodromy matrix are obtained as limits from their known counterparts on the finite interval. The $R$-matrix greatly simplifies in the considered limit. The new $R$-matrix contains a submatrix which turns into the rational $R$-matrix of the XXX-chain by an appropriate reparametrization. The corresponding submatrix of the monodromy matrix thus provides a representation of the Y(su(2)) Yangian. From its quantum determinant we obtain an infinite series of…
