Shear-induced vertical mixing in a stratified flow is a key ingredient of thermohaline circulation. We experimentally determine the vertical flux of momentum and density of a forced gravity current using high-resolution velocity and density measurements. A constant eddy viscosity model provides a poor description of the physics of mixing, but a Prandtl mixing length model relating momentum and density fluxes to mean velocity and density gradients works well. For $<Ri_g > \approx 0.08$ and $Re_λ\approx 100$, the mixing lengths are fairly constant, about the same magnitude, comparable to the turbulent shear length.
In this study, the stability dependence of turbulent Prandtl number ($Pr_t$) is quantified via a novel and simple analytical approach. Based on the variance and flux budget equations, a hybrid length scale formulation is first proposed and its functional relationships to well-known length scales are established. Next, the ratios of these length scales are utilized to derive an explicit relationship between $Pr_t$ and gradient Richardson number. In addition, theoretical predictions are made for several key turbulence variables (e.g., dissipation rates, normalized fluxes). The results from our p…
We extend the scaling relations of stably stratified turbulence from the geophysical regime of unity Prandtl number to the astrophysical regime of extremely small Prandtl number applicable to stably stratified regions of stars and gas giants. A transition to a new turbulent regime is found to occur when the Prandtl number drops below the inverse of the buoyancy Reynolds number, i.e. $PrRb<1$, which signals a shift of the dominant balance in the buoyancy equation. Application of critical balance arguments then derives new predictions for the anisotropic energy spectrum and dominant balance of t…
We examine how known unstable equilibria of the Navier-Stokes equations in plane Couette flow adapt to the presence of an imposed stable density difference between the two boundaries for varying values of the Prandtl number $Pr$, the ratio of viscosity to density diffusivity, and fixed moderate Reynolds number, $Re=400$. In the two asymptotic limits $Pr \to 0$ and $Pr \to \infty$, it is found that such solutions exist at arbitrarily high bulk stratification but for different physical reasons. In the $Pr \to 0$ limit, density variations away from a constant stable density gradient become vanish…
Stationary longitudinal vortical rolls emerge in katabatic and anabatic Prandtl slope flows due to the dominance of the normal component of the buoyancy force over flow shear. Here, we further identify self pairing of these longitudinal rolls as a unique flow structure. The topology of the counter-rotating vortex pair bears a striking resemblance to speaker-wires and their interaction with each other is a precursor to further destabilization and breakdown of the flow field into smaller structures. On its own, a speaker-wire vortex retains its unique topology without any vortex reconnection or …
Small-scale dynamo action is often held responsible for the generation of quiet-Sun magnetic fields. We aim to determine the excitation conditions and saturation level of small-scale dynamos in non-rotating turbulent convection at low magnetic Prandtl numbers. We use high resolution direct numerical simulations of weakly stratified turbulent convection. We find that the critical magnetic Reynolds number for dynamo excitation increases as the magnetic Prandtl number is decreased, which might suggest that small-scale dynamo action is not automatically evident in bodies with small magnetic Prandt…
Despite its limitations, Prandtl's mixing length model is widely applied in modelling turbulent free shear flows. Prandtl's extended model addresses many of the shortfalls of the original model, but is not so widely used, in part due to additional mathematical complexities that arise in its derivation and implementation. Furthermore, in both models Prandtl neglects the kinematic viscosity on the basis that it is much smaller in magnitude than the turbulent viscosity. Recent work has shown that including the kinematic viscosity in the original model has both mathematical and physical advantages…
We consider the dynamics of a vertically stratified, horizontally-forced Kolmogorov flow. Motivated by astrophysical systems where the Prandtl number is often asymptotically small, our focus is the little-studied limit of high Reynolds number but low Péclet number (which is defined to be the product of the Reynolds number and the Prandtl number). Through a linear stability analysis, we demonstrate that the stability of two-dimensional modes to infinitesimal perturbations is independent of the stratification, whilst three-dimensional modes are always unstable in the limit of strong stratificati…
The offshore wind energy sector has rapidly expanded over the past two decades, providing a renewable energy solution for coastal nations. Sector development has been led in Europe, but is growing globally. Most developments to date have been in well-mixed, i.e. unstratified, shallow-waters near to shore. Sector growth is, for the first time, pushing developments to deep water, into a brand new environment: seasonally stratified shelf seas. Seasonally stratified shelf seas, where water density varies with depth, have a disproportionately key role in primary production, marine ecosystem and bio…
Predicting how much mixing occurs when a given amount of energy is injected into a Boussinesq fluid is a longstanding problem in stratified turbulence. The huge number of degrees of freedom involved in those processes renders extremely difficult a deterministic approach to the problem. Here we present a statistical mechanics approach yielding prediction for a cumulative, global mixing efficiency as a function of a global Richardson number and the background buoyancy profile.
Turbulent mixing in the radiative regions of stars is usually either ignored or crudely accounted for in most stellar evolution models. However, there is growing theoretical and observational evidence that such mixing is present and can affect various aspects of a star's life. In this work, we present a first attempt at quantifying mixing by horizontal shear instabilities in stars using Direct Numerical Simulations. The shear is driven by a body force, and rapidly becomes unstable. At saturation, we find that several distinct dynamical regimes exist, depending on the relative importance of str…
Current global ocean models rely on ad-hoc parameterizations of diapycnal mixing, in which the efficiency of mixing is globally assumed to be fixed at $20\%$, despite increasing evidence that this assumption is questionable. As an ansatz for small-scale ocean turbulence, we may focus on stratified shear flows susceptible to either Kelvin-Helmholtz (KHI) or Holmboe wave (HWI) instability. Recently, an unprecedented volume of data has been generated through direct numerical simulation (DNS) of these flows. In this paper, we describe the application of deep learning methods to the discovery of a …
(abridged) Context: The ratio of kinematic viscosity to thermal diffusivity, the Prandtl number, is much smaller than unity in stellar convection zones. Aims: To study the statistics of convective flows and energy transport as functions of the Prandtl number. Methods: Three-dimensional numerical simulations convection in Cartesian geometry are used. The convection zone (CZ) is embedded between two stably stratified layers. Statistics and transport properties of up- and downflows are studied separately. Results: The rms velocity increases with decreasing Prandtl number. At the same time the fil…
A one-dimensional long-wave model of an unsteady three-layer flow of a stratified fluid under a lid is proposed, taking into account turbulent mixing in the intermediate layer. In the Boussinesq approximation, the equations of motion are reduced to an evolutionary system of balance laws, which is hyperbolic for a small difference in velocities in the layers. Classes of stationary solutions are studied and the concept of subcritical (supercritical) three-layer stratified flow is introduced. Oscillating solutions are constructed that describe the spatial evolution of the mixing layer. The proble…
We present a turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) closure scheme for the stably stratified atmosphere in which the mixing lengths for momentum and heat are not parameterized in the same manner. The key difference is that, while the mixing length for heat tends towards the stability independent mixing length for momentum in neutrally stratified conditions, it tends towards one based on the Brunt-Väisälä time scale and square root of the TKE in the limit of large stability. This enables a unique steady-state solution for TKE to be obtained, which we demonstrate would otherwise be impossible if the mix…
Turbulent mixing exerts a significant influence on many physical processes in the ocean. In a stably stratified Boussinesq fluid, this irreversible mixing describes the conversion of available potential energy (APE) to background potential energy (BPE). In some settings the APE framework is difficult to apply and approximate measures are used to estimate irreversible mixing. For example, numerical simulations of stratified turbulence often use triply periodic domains to increase computational efficiency. In this setup however, BPE is not uniquely defined and the method of Winters et al. (1995,…
In this Part 2 we study further experimental properties of two-layer exchange flows in a stratified inclined duct (SID), which are turbulent, strongly-stratified, shear-driven, and continuously-forced. We analyse the same state-of-the-art data sets using the same core shear layer methodology as in Part 1, but we focus here on turbulent energetics and mixing statistics. The detailed analysis of kinetic and scalar energy budgets reveals the specificity and scalings of SID turbulence, while energy spectra provide insight into the current strengths and limitations of our experimental data. The ani…
We investigate the large-scale intermittency of vertical velocity and temperature, and the mixing properties of stably stratified turbulent flows using both Lagrangian and Eulerian fields from direct numerical simulations, in a parameter space relevant for the atmosphere and the oceans. Over a range of Froude numbers of geophysical interest ($\approx 0.05-0.3$) we observe very large fluctuations of the vertical components of the velocity and the potential temperature, localized in space and time, with a sharp transition leading to non-Gaussian wings of the probability distribution functions. T…
We consider the nonlinear optimisation of irreversible mixing induced by an initial finite amplitude perturbation of a statically stable density-stratified fluid. A constant pressure gradient is imposed in a plane two-dimensional channel. We consider flows with a finite Péclet number $Pe=500$ and Prandtl number $Pr=1$, and a range of bulk Richardson numbers $Ri_b \in [0,1]$. We use the constrained variational direct-adjoint-looping (DAL) method to solve two optimization problems, extending the optimal mixing results of Foures et al. (2014) to stratified flows, where the mixing of the scalar de…
The effects of different initial perturbations on the evolution of stratified shear flows that are subject to Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and vortex pairing have been investigated through Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS). The effects of purely random perturbations of the background flow are sensitive to the phase of the subharmonic component of the perturbation that has a wavelength double that of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. If the phase relationship between the Kelvin-Helmholtz mode and its subharmonic mode is optimal, or close to it, vortex pairing occurs. Vortex paring is delayed wh…
We study the morphology of Eulerian vortical structures and their interaction with density interfaces in increasingly turbulent stably-stratified shear layers. We analyse the three-dimensional, simultaneous velocity and density fields obtained in the stratified inclined duct laboratory experiment. We track, across 15 datasets, the evolution of coherent structures from pre-turbulent Holmboe waves, through intermittent turbulence, to full turbulence and mixing. We use the Rortex--Shear decomposition of the vorticity field into a pure rotational part (the rortex vector), and a non-rotational part…
The effects of turbulent dynamic range on scalar mixing in stably stratified turbulence are investigated by an adaptation of the theoretical passive scalar modelling arguments of Beguier et al. (1978) and demonstrated statistically using direct numerical simulations of statistically stationary homogeneous stratified and sheared turbulence (SHSST). By analysis of inertial and inertial-convective subrange scaling, we show that the relationship between active scalar and turbulence time scales is predicted by the ratio of the Kolmogorov and Oboukhov-Corrsin constants provided there is sufficient s…
In Hamiltonian systems characterized by a degenerate Poisson algebra, we show how to construct a local energy-like quantity that can be used to study diabatic effects on the evolution of the Available Energy of the system, the latter concept formalizing the original idea of Margules'. We calculate the local diagnostic energy for geophysically relevant flows. For the particular case of stratified Boussinesq flows, we show that under moderately general conditions, in inertial frames where the initial distribution of potential vorticity is even around the origin, our framework recovers the Availa…
The presence of stratified layer in atmosphere and ocean leads to buoyant vertical motions, commonly referred to as plumes. It is important to study the mixing dynamics of a plume at a local scale in order to model their evolution and growth. Such a characterization requires measuring the velocity and density of the mixing fluids simultaneously. Here, we present the results of a buoyant plume propagating in a linearly stratified medium with a density difference of 0.5%, thus yielding a buoyancy frequency of N=0.15 s^{-1}. To understand the plume behaviour, statistics such as centerline and axi…
In this paper, we investigate the upward overshooting by three-dimensional numerical simulations. We find that the above convectively stable zone can be partitioned into three layers: the thermal adjustment layer (mixing both entropy and material), the turbulent dissipation layer (mixing material but not entropy), and the thermal dissipation layer (mixing neither entropy nor material). The turbulent dissipation layer is separated from the thermal adjustment layer and the thermal dissipation layer by the first and second zero points of the vertical velocity correlation. The simulation results a…
Motivated by the importance of stratified shear flows in geophysical and environmental circumstances, we characterize their energetics, mixing and spectral behavior through a series of direct numerical simulations of turbulence generated by Holmboe wave instability (HWI) under various initial conditions. We focus on circumstances where the stratification is sufficiently `strong' so that HWI is the dominant primary instability of the flow. Our numerical findings demonstrate the emergence of self-organised criticality (SOC) that is manifest as an adjustment of an appropriately defined gradient R…
We consider turbulence driven by a large-scale horizontal shear in Kolmogorov flow (i.e. with sinusoidal body forcing) and a background linear stable stratification with buoyancy frequency $N_B^2$ imposed in the third, vertical direction in a fluid with kinematic viscosity $ν$. This flow is known to be organised into layers by nonlinear unstable steady states, which incline the background shear in the vertical and can be demonstrated to be the finite-amplitude saturation of a sequence of instabilities, originally from the laminar state. Here, we investigate the next order of motions in this sy…
Shear-induced turbulence could play a significant role in mixing momentum and chemical species in stellar radiation zones, as discussed by Zahn (1974). In this paper we analyze the results of direct numerical simulations of stratified plane Couette flows, in the limit of rapid thermal diffusion, to measure the turbulent diffusivity and turbulent viscosity as a function of the local shear and the local stratification. We find that the stability criterion proposed by Zahn (1974), namely that the product of the gradient Richardson number and the Prandtl number must be smaller than a critical valu…
We present a model for the scaling of mixing in weakly rotating stratified flows characterized by their Rossby, Froude and Reynolds numbers Ro, Fr, Re. It is based on quasi-equipartition between kinetic and potential modes, sub-dominant vertical velocity and lessening of the energy transfer to small scales as measured by the ratio rE of kinetic energy dissipation to its dimensional expression. We determine their domains of validity for a numerical study of the unforced Boussinesq equations mostly on grids of 10243 points, with Ro/Fr> 2.5 and with 1600< Re<1.9x104; the Prandtl number is one, in…
Well-resolved numerical simulations are used to study Rayleigh-Bénard-Poiseuille flow over an evolving phase boundary for moderate values of Péclet ($Pe \in \left[0, 50\right]$) and Rayleigh ($Ra \in \left[2.15 \times 10^3, 10^6\right]$) numbers. The relative effects of mean shear and buoyancy are quantified using a bulk Richardson number: $Ri_b = Ra \cdot Pr/Pe^2 \in [8.6 \times 10^{-1}, 10^4]$, where $Pr$ is the Prandtl number. For $Ri_b = \mathcal{O}(1)$, we find that the Poiseuille flow inhibits convective motions, resulting in the heat transport being only due to conduction; and, for $Ri_…
Most idealized studies of stratified shear instabilities assume that the shear interface and the buoyancy interface are coincident. We discuss the role of asymmetry on the evolution of shear instabilities. Using linear stability theory and direct numerical simulations, we show that asymmetric shear instabilities exhibit features of both Holmboe and Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instabilities, and develop a framework to determine whether the instabilities are more Holmboe-like or more KH-like. Further, the asymmetric instabilities produce asymmetric mixing that exhibits features of both overturning and…
We study the turbulent flow of the density-stratified fluid around a small translating (either passively or self-propelled) particle. It was found recently [A. M. Ardekani and R. Stocker, Phys. Rev. Lett. vol. 105, 084502 (2010)] that without turbulence, the familiar Stokes flow is dramatically altered by the stratification. Stratification-induced inhomogeneity "turns on" the buoyancy introducing a new "cutoff" or "screening" length scale for the flow, yielding closed streamlines and a faster (exponential-like) decay of velocity. This result, however, did not account for the potential role of …
