Consider non-intersecting Brownian motions on the line leaving from the origin and forced to two arbitrary points. Letting the number of Brownian particles tend to infinity, and upon rescaling, there is a point of bifurcation, where the support of the density of particles goes from one interval to two intervals. In this paper, we show that at that very point of bifurcation a cusp appears, near which the Brownian paths fluctuate like the Pearcey process. This is a universality result within this class of problems. Tracy and Widom obtained such a result in the symmetric case, when the two target points are symmetric with regard to the origin. This asymmetry enabled us to improve considerably a result concerning the non-linear partial differential equations governing the transition probabilities for the Pearcey process, obtained by Adler and van Moerbeke.
Putting dynamics into random matrix models leads to finitely many nonintersecting Brownian motions on the real line for the eigenvalues, as was discovered by Dyson. Applying scaling limits to the random matrix models, combined with Dyson's dynamics, then leads to interesting, infinite-dimensional diffusions for the eigenvalues. This paper studies the relationship between two of the models, namely the Airy and Pearcey processes and more precisely shows how to approximate the multi-time statistics for the Pearcey process by the one of the Airy process with the help of a PDE governing the gap pro…
The Pearcey process is a universal point process in random matrix theory. In this paper, we study the generating function of the Pearcey process on any number $m$ of intervals. We derive an integral representation for it in terms of a Hamiltonian that is related to a system of $6m+2$ coupled nonlinear equations. We also obtain asymptotics for the generating function as the size of the intervals get large, up to and including the constant term. This work generalizes some recent results of Dai, Xu and Zhang, which correspond to $m=1$.
We express the gap probabilities of the tacnode process as the ratio of two Fredholm determinants; the denominator is the standard Tracy-Widom distribution, while the numerator is the Fredholm determinant of a very explicit kernel constructed with Airy functions and exponentials. The formula allows us to apply the theory of numerical evaluation of Fredholm determinants and thus produce numerical results for the gap probabilities. In particular we investigate numerically how, in different regimes, the Pearcey process degenerates to the Airy one, and the tacnode degenerates to the Pearcey and Ai…
The Pearcey process is a universal point process in random matrix theory and depends on a parameter $ρ\in \mathbb{R}$. Let $N(x)$ be the random variable that counts the number of points in this process that fall in the interval $[-x,x]$. In this note, we establish the following global rigidity upper bound: \begin{align*} \lim_{s \to \infty}\mathbb P\left(\sup_{x> s}\left|\frac{N(x)-\big( \frac{3\sqrt{3}}{4π}x^{\frac{4}{3}}-\frac{\sqrt{3}ρ}{2π}x^{\frac{2}{3}} \big)}{\log x}\right| \leq \frac{4\sqrt{2}}{3π} + ε\right) = 1, \end{align*} where $ε> 0$ is arbitrary. We also obtain a similar upper bo…
In this paper, we are concerned with the deformed Pearcey determinant $\det\left(I-γK^{\mathrm{Pe}}_{s,ρ}\right)$, where $0 \leq γ<1$ and $K^{\mathrm{Pe}}_{s,ρ}$ stands for the trace class operator acting on $L^2\left(-s, s\right)$ with the classical Pearcey kernel arising from random matrix theory. This determinant corresponds to the gap probability for the Pearcey process after thinning, which means each particle in the Pearcey process is removed independently with probability $1-γ$. We establish an integral representation of the deformed Pearcey determinant involving the Hamiltonian associa…
We study $n$ non-intersecting Brownian motions, corresponding to the eigenvalues of an $n\times n$ Hermitian Brownian motion. At the boundary of their limit shape we find that only three universal processes can arise: the Pearcey process close to merging points, the Airy line ensemble at edges and a novel determinantal process describing the transition from the Pearcey process to the Airy line ensemble. The three cases are distinguished by a remarkably simple integral condition. Our results hold under very mild assumptions, in particular we do not require any kind of convergence of the initial…
The extended Airy kernel describes the space-time correlation functions for the Airy process, which is the limiting process for a polynuclear growth model. The Airy functions themselves are given by integrals in which the exponents have a cubic singularity, arising from the coalescence of two saddle points in an asymptotic analysis. Pearcey functions are given by integrals in which the exponents have a quartic singularity, arising from the coalescence of three saddle points. A corresponding Pearcey kernel appears in a random matrix model and a Brownian motion model for a fixed time. This paper…
This paper is a step in the direction of understanding the behavior of non-intersecting Brownian motions on the real line, when the number of particles becomes large. Consider 2k non-intersecting Brownian motions, all starting at the origin, such that the k left paths end up at -a and the k right paths end up at +a at time t=1. The Karlin-McGregor formula enables one to express the transition probability in terms of a matrix model, consisting of Gaussian Hermitian random matrices in a chain with external source. It is shown that the log of the probability for this model satisfies a fourth orde…
A system of non-intersecting squared Bessel processes is considered which all start from one point and they all return to another point. Under the scaling of the starting and ending points when the macroscopic boundary of the paths touches the hard edge, a limiting critical process is described in the neighbourhood of the touching point which we call the hard edge tacnode process. We derive its correlation kernel in an explicit new form which involves Airy type functions and operators that act on the direct sum of $L^2(\mathbb R_+)$ and a finite dimensional space. As the starting points of the…
Consider $n+m$ nonintersecting Brownian bridges, with $n$ of them leaving from 0 at time $t=-1$ and returning to 0 at time $t=1$, while the $m$ remaining ones (wanderers) go from $m$ points $a_i$ to $m$ points $b_i$. First, we keep $m$ fixed and we scale $a_i,b_i$ appropriately with $n$. In the large-$n$ limit, we obtain a new Airy process with wanderers, in the neighborhood of $\sqrt{2n}$, the approximate location of the rightmost particle in the absence of wanderers. This new process is governed by an Airy-type kernel, with a rational perturbation. Letting the number $m$ of wanderers tend to…
We study a Markov process on a system of interlacing particles. At large times the particles fill a domain that depends on a parameter $\eps> 0$. The domain has two cusps, one pointing up and one pointing down. In the limit $\varepsilon\downarrow 0$ the cusps touch, thus forming a tacnode. The main result of the paper is a derivation of the local correlation kernel around the tacnode in the transition regime $\varepsilon \downarrow 0$. We also prove that the local process interpolates between the Pearcey process and the GUE minor process.
At a typical cusp point of the disordered region in a random tiling model we expect to see a determinantal process called the Pearcey process in the appropriate scaling limit. However, in certain situations another limiting point process appears that we call the Cusp-Airy process, which is a kind of two sided extension of the Airy kernel point process. We will study this problem in a class of random lozenge tiling models coming from interlacing particle systems. The situation was briefly studied previously by Okounkov and Reshetikhin under the name cuspidal turning point.
We study a model of nonintersecting Brownian bridges on an interval with either absorbing or reflecting walls at the boundaries, focusing on the point in space-time at which the particles meet the wall. These processes are determinantal, and in different scaling limits when the particles approach the reflecting (resp. absorbing) walls we obtain hard-edge limiting kernels which are the even (resp. odd) parts of the Pearcey and tacnode kernels. We also show that in the single time case, our hard-edge tacnode kernels are equivalent to the ones studied by Delvaux [16], defined in terms of a $4\tim…
These notes are based on a talk given at the 2018 Arizona School of Analysis and Mathematical Physics. We give a comprehensive introduction to the KPZ universality class, a conjectured class of stochastic process with local interactions related to random growth processes in $1+1$ dimensions. We describe some of the characteristic properties of the KPZ universality class such as scaling exponents and limiting statistics. In particular, we aim to extract the characteristic properties of the KPZ universality class by understanding the KPZ stochastic partial differential equation by a special disc…

Discrete and continuous non-intersecting random processes have given rise to critical "infinite dimensional diffusions", like the Airy process, the Pearcey process and variations thereof. It has been known that domino tilings of very large Aztec diamonds lead macroscopically to a disordered region within an inscribed ellipse (arctic circle in the homogeneous case), and a regular brick-like region outside the ellipse. The fluctuations near the ellipse, appropriately magnified and away from the boundary of the Aztec diamond, form an Airy process, run with time tangential to the boundary. This pa…
The KPZ fixed point is a scaling invariant Markov process which arises as the universal scaling limit of a broad class of models of random interface growth in one dimension, the one-dimensional KPZ universality class. In this survey we review the construction of the KPZ fixed point and some of the history that led to it, in particular through the exact solution of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process, a special solvable model in the class. We also explain how the construction reveals the KPZ fixed point as a stochastic integrable system, and how from this it follows that its finite …
This paper constructs a new interacting particle system on a two--dimensional lattice with geometric jumps near a boundary which partially reflects the particles. The projection to each horizontal level is Markov, and on every level the dynamics match stochastic matrices constructed from pure alpha characters of $Sp(\infty)$, while on every other level they match an interacting particle system from Pieri formulas for $Sp(2r)$. Using a previously discovered correlation kernel, asymptotics are shown to be the Discrete Jacobi and Symmetric Pearcey processes.
We study $n$ non-intersecting Brownian motions corresponding to initial configurations which have a vanishing density in the large $n$ limit at an interior point of the support. It is understood that the point of vanishing can propagate up to a critical time, and we investigate the nature of the microscopic space-time correlations near the critical point and critical time. We show that they are described either by the Pearcey process or by the Airy line ensemble, depending on whether a simple integral related to the initial configuration vanishes or not. Since the Airy line ensemble typically …
We consider a type of dependent percolation introduced by Aizenman and Grimmett, who showed that certain "enhancements" of independent (Bernoulli) percolation, called essential, make the percolation critical probability strictly smaller. In this paper we first prove that, for two-dimensional enhancements with a natural monotonicity property, being essential is also a necessary condition to shift the critical point. We then show that (some) critical exponents and the scaling limit of crossing probabilities of a two-dimensional percolation process are unchanged if the process is subjected to a m…
We consider Random Hopping Time (RHT) dynamics of the Sherrington - Kirkpatrick (SK) model and p-spin models of spin glasses. For any of these models and for any inverse temperature we prove that, on time scales that are sub-exponential in the dimension, the properly scaled clock process (time-change process) of the dynamics converges to an extremal process. Moreover, on these time scales, the system exhibits aging like behavior which we called extremal aging. In other words, the dynamics of these models ages as the random energy model (REM) does. Hence, by extension, this confirms Bouchaud's …
The purpose of this article is to develop a theory behind the occurrence of "path-integral" kernels in the study of extended determinantal point processes and non-intersecting line ensembles. Our first result shows how determinants involving such kernels arise naturally in studying ratios of partition functions and expectations of multiplicative functionals for ensembles of non-intersecting paths on weighted graphs. Our second result shows how Fredholm determinants with extended kernels (as arise in the study of extended determinantal point processes such as the Airy_2 process) are equal to Fr…
We consider the Laplace-Beltrami operator $Δ_g$ on a smooth, compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ and the determinantal point process $\mathcal{X}_λ$ on $M$ associated with the spectral projection of $-Δ_g$ onto the subspace corresponding to the eigenvalues up to $λ^2$. We show that the pull-back of $\mathcal{X}_λ$ by the exponential map $\exp_p : T_p^*M \to M$ under a suitable scaling converges weakly to the universal determinantal point process on $T_p^* M$ as $λ\to \infty$.
These notes are based on lectures delivered by the authors at a Langeoog seminar of SFB/TR12 "Symmetries and universality in mesoscopic systems" to a mixed audience of mathematicians and theoretical physicists. After a brief outline of the basic physical concepts of equilibrium and nonequilibrium states, the one-dimensional simple exclusion process is introduced as a paradigmatic nonequilibrium interacting particle system. The stationary measure on the ring is derived and the idea of the hydrodynamic limit is sketched. We then introduce the phenomenological Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation a…
This paper belongs to a series of papers aiming to investigate scaling limits of Crump-Mode-Jagers (CMJ) trees. In the previous two papers we identified general conditions under which CMJ trees belong to the universality class of Galton-Watson and Bellman-Harris processes. In this paper we identify general conditions for CMJ trees to belong to the universality class of binary, homogeneous CMJ trees. These conditions state that the offspring process should 'look like' a renewal process, and also that it should not accumulate too many atoms near the origin. We show in particular that any renewal…
The Bessel point process is a rigid point process on the positive real line and its conditional measure on a bounded interval $[0,R]$ is almost surely an orthogonal polynomial ensemble. In this article, we show that if $R$ tends to infinity, one almost surely recovers the Bessel point process. In fact, we show this convergence for a deterministic class of probability measures, to which the conditional measure of the Bessel point process almost surely belongs.
Universality properties of the distribution of the generalized eigenvalues of a pencil of random Hankel matrices, arising in the solution of the exponential interpolation problem of a complex discrete stationary process, are proved under the assumption that every finite set of random variables of the process have a multivariate spherical distribution. An integral representation of the condensed density of the generalized eigenvalues is also derived. The asymptotic behavior of this function turns out to depend only on stationarity and not on the specific distribution of the process.
The sine process is a rigid point process on the real line, which means that for almost all configurations $X$, the number of points in an interval $I = [-R,R]$ is determined by the points of $X$ outside of $I$. In addition, the points in $I$ are an orthogonal polynomial ensemble on $I$ with a weight function that is determined by the points in $X \setminus I$. We prove a universality result that in particular implies that the correlation kernel of the orthogonal polynomial ensemble tends to the sine kernel as the length $|I|=2R$ tends to infinity, thereby answering a question posed by A.I. Bu…
We consider the reversible exclusion process with reservoirs on arbitrary networks. We characterize the spectral gap, mixing time, and mixing window of the process, in terms of certain simple statistics of the underlying network. Among other consequences, we establish a non-conservative analogue of Aldous's spectral gap conjecture, and we show that cutoff occurs if and only if the product condition is satisfied. We illustrate this by providing explicit cutoffs on discrete lattices of arbitrary dimensions and boundary conditions, which substantially generalize recent one-dimensional results. We…
This paper describes joint work with Oded Schramm and Wendelin Werner establishing the values of the planar Brownian intersection exponents from which one derives the Hausdorff dimension of certain exceptional sets of planar Brownian motion. In particular, we proof a conjecture of Mandelbrot that the dimension of the frontier is 4/3. The proof uses a universality principle for conformally invariant measures and a new process, the stochastic Loewner evolution ($SLE$), introduced by Schramm. These ideas can be used to study other planar lattice models from statistical physics at criticality. I d…
In this paper we define a family of preferential attachment models for random graphs with fitness in the following way: independently for each node, at each time step a random fitness is drawn according to the position of a moving average process with positive increments. We will define two regimes in which our graph reproduces some features of two well known preferential attachment models: the Bianconi-Barabási and the Barabási-Albert models. We will discuss a few conjectures on these models, including the convergence of the degree sequence and the appearance of Bose-Einstein condensation in …
We consider a class of stochastic reaction-diffusion equations on the three dimensional torus. The non-linearities are odd polynomials in the weakly non-linear regime, and the smoothing mechanisms are very general higher order perturbations of the Laplacian. The randomness is the space-time white noise without regularisation. We show that these processes converge to the dynamical $Φ^4_3 (λ)$ model, where the coupling constant $λ$ has an explicit expression involving non-trivial interactions between all details of the smoothing mechanism and the non-linearity.
Given a target distribution $μ$ on a general state space $\mathcal{X}$ and a proposal Markov jump process with generator $Q$, the purpose of this paper is to investigate two universal properties enjoyed by two types of Metropolis-Hastings (MH) processes with generators $M_1(Q,μ)$ and $M_2(Q,μ)$ respectively. First, we motivate our study of $M_2$ by offering a geometric interpretation of $M_1$, $M_2$ and their convex combinations as $L^1$ minimizers between $Q$ and the set of $μ$-reversible generators of Markov jump processes. Second, specializing into the case of $\mathcal{X} = \mathbb{R}^d$ a…
