This paper is a step in the direction of understanding the behavior of non-intersecting Brownian motions on the real line, when the number of particles becomes large.
Consider 2k non-intersecting Brownian motions, all starting at the origin, such that the k left paths end up at -a and the k right paths end up at +a at time t=1. The Karlin-McGregor formula enables one to express the transition probability in terms of a matrix model, consisting of Gaussian Hermitian random matrices in a chain with external source. It is shown that the log of the probability for this model satisfies a fourth order PDE with a quartic non-linearity, obtained by means of the 3-component KP hierarchy and Virasoro constraints.
When the number of particles grows very large, the particles will be concentrated on two intervals near t=0 and on one interval near t=1. The Pearcey process is the infinite-dimensional diffusion, near the critical transition from two to one interval. An appropriate scaling limit of the PDE for the finite model leads to a non-linear PDE for the multi-time transition probabilities of the Pearcey process.
We conjecture that each of the Markov clouds (like the Pearcey process) arising near phase transitions is related to some integrable system. Moreover, there is an intimate connection between the integrable system and the associated Riemann-Hilbert problem.
In this paper, we are concerned with the deformed Pearcey determinant $\det\left(I-γK^{\mathrm{Pe}}_{s,ρ}\right)$, where $0 \leq γ<1$ and $K^{\mathrm{Pe}}_{s,ρ}$ stands for the trace class operator acting on $L^2\left(-s, s\right)$ with the classical Pearcey kernel arising from random matrix theory. This determinant corresponds to the gap probability for the Pearcey process after thinning, which means each particle in the Pearcey process is removed independently with probability $1-γ$. We establish an integral representation of the deformed Pearcey determinant involving the Hamiltonian associa…
The present paper studies a Gaussian Hermitian random matrix ensemble with external source, given by a fixed diagonal matrix with two eigenvalues a and -a. As a first result, the probability that the eigenvalues of the ensemble belong to a set satisfies a fourth order PDE with quartic non-linearity; the variables being the eigenvalue a and the boundary points of the set. This equation enables one to find a PDE for the Pearcey distribution. The latter describes the statistics of the eigenvalues near the closure of a gap; i.e., when the support of the equilibrium measure for large size random ma…
We study $n$ non-intersecting Brownian motions corresponding to initial configurations which have a vanishing density in the large $n$ limit at an interior point of the support. It is understood that the point of vanishing can propagate up to a critical time, and we investigate the nature of the microscopic space-time correlations near the critical point and critical time. We show that they are described either by the Pearcey process or by the Airy line ensemble, depending on whether a simple integral related to the initial configuration vanishes or not. Since the Airy line ensemble typically …
By using a quantum probabilistic approach we obtain a description of the extreme points of the convex set of all joint probability distributions on the product of two standard Borel spaces with fixed marginal distributions.
Consider non-intersecting Brownian motions on the real line, starting from the origin at t=0, with a number of particles forced to reach p distinct target points at time t=1. This work shows that the transition probability, that is the probability for the particles to pass through windows E_k at times t_k, satisfies, in a new set of variables, a non-linear PDE which can be expressed as a near-Wronskian; that is a determinant of a matrix of size p+1, with each row being a derivative of the previous, except for the last column. It is an interesting open question to understand those equations fro…
Correlations of active and passive random intersection graphs are studied in this letter. We present the joint probability generating function for degrees of $G^{active}(n,m,p)$ and $G^{passive}(n,m,p)$, which are generated by a random bipartite graph $G^*(n,m,p)$ on $n+m$ vertices.
This paper gives a PDE for multi-time joint probability of the Airy process, which generalizes Adler and van Moerbeke's result on the 2-time case. As an intermediate step, the PDE for the multi-time joint probability of the Dyson Brownian motion is also given.
This paper investigates the probability density function ($pdf$) of the $(2n-1)$-vector $(n\geq 1)$ of both lower and upper record values for a sequence of independent random variables with common $pdf f$ defined on the same probability space, provided that the lower and upper record times are finite up to $n$. A lot is known about the lower or the upper record values when they are studied separately. When put together, the challenges are a far bigger complicated. The rare results in the literature still present important flaws. This paper begins a new and complete investigation with a few num…
We justify and discuss expressions for joint lower and upper expectations in imprecise probability trees, in terms of the sub- and supermartingales that can be associated with such trees. These imprecise probability trees can be seen as discrete-time stochastic processes with finite state sets and transition probabilities that are imprecise, in the sense that they are only known to belong to some convex closed set of probability measures. We derive various properties for their joint lower and upper expectations, and in particular a law of iterated expectations. We then focus on the special cas…
This is a chapter for the forthcoming New Handbook of Mathematical Psychology, to be published by Cambridge University Press. A systematic theory of random variables and joint distributions under varying conditions is presented. This is a Kolmogorovian theory most generally understood, in which random variables recorded under mutually exclusive conditions do not possess joint distributions but can be coupled in multiple ways.
There are interesting extensions of the problem of determining a joint probability with known marginals. On the one hand, one may impose size constraints on the joint probabilities. On the other, one may impose additional constraints like the expected values of known random variables. If we think of the marginal probabilities as demands or supplies, and of the joint probability as the fraction of the supplies to be shipped from the production sites to the demand sites, instead of joint probabilities we can think of transportation policies. Clearly, fixing the cost of a transportation policy is…
We prove that the Hilbert space description of all joint von Neumann measurements on a quantum state can be reproduced in terms of a single measure space (Ω, F, μ) with a normalized real-valued measure μ, that is, in terms of a new general probability model, the quasi-classical probability model, developed in [Loubenets: J. Math. Phys. 53 (2012), 022201; J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 45 (2012), 185306]. In a quasi-classical probability model for all von Neumann measurements, a random variable models the corresponding quantum observable in all joint measurements and depends only on this quantum obse…
We consider the down/up crossing property of weighted Markov branching processes. The joint probability distribution of multi crossing numbers of such processes are obtained. In particular, for Markov branching processes, the probability distribution of death number is given and for bulk-arrival queueing model, the joint probability distributions of service number and arrival number is also given.
This paper presents some new results on the conditional joint probability distributions of phase-type under the mixture of right-continuous Markov jump processes with absorption on the same finite state space $\mathbb{S}$ moving at different speeds, where the mixture occurs at a random time. Such mixture was first proposed by Frydman \cite{Frydman2005} and Frydman and Schuermann \cite{Frydman2008} as a generalization of the mover-stayer model of Blumen et at. \cite{Blumen}, and was recently extended by Surya \cite{Surya2018}. When conditioning on all previous and current information $\mathcal{…
We show that any joint probability mass function (PMF) can be expressed as a product of parity check factors and factors of degree one with the help of some auxiliary variables, if the alphabet size is appropriate for defining a parity check equation. In other words, marginalization of a joint PMF is equivalent to a soft decoding task as long as a finite field can be constructed over the alphabet of the PMF. In factor graph terminology this claim means that a factor graph representing such a joint PMF always has an equivalent Tanner graph. We provide a systematic method based on the Hilbert sp…
New results on conditional joint probability distributions of first exit times are presented for a continuous-time stochastic process defined as the mixture of Markov jump processes moving at different speeds on the same finite state space, while the mixture occurs at a random time. Such mixture was first proposed by Frydman \cite{Frydman2005} and Frydman and Schuermann \cite{Frydman2008} as a generalization of the mover-stayer model of Blumen et at. \cite{Blumen}, and was recently extended by Surya \cite{Surya2018}, in which explicit distributional identities of the process are given, in part…
A wide range of physical problems can be described by randomly-oriented linear trajectories, including any system of objects, organisms, particles, or rays that follow a linear path. Dependent upon the particular random variables that define translation and direction, a description of the probabilistic behavior through a static volume can reveal evidence on an object's physical properties. Yet more information may be available in cases where this behavior is a function of volume shape. In this study two types of random trajectories are considered as they pass through a box of arbitrary relativ…
This paper studies the heavy-traffic asymptotics for the multiclass FIFO M${}^X$/G/1 queue. We first derive the probability generating function of the joint queue length distribution. Using the probability generating function, we then present heavy-traffic asymptotic formulas for the joint queue length distribution and its joint moments (i.e., the joint queue length moments). These formulas are proved under weaker conditions on the service time distributions, compared to the ones reported in the literature. This fact leads us to conjectures that some of the conditions made in the literature ar…
Multivariate rapid variation describes decay rates of joint light tails of a multivariate distribution. We impose a local uniformity condition to control decay variation of distribution tails along different directions, and using higher-order tail dependence of copulas, we prove that a rapidly varying multivariate density implies rapid variation of the joint distribution tails. As a corollary, rapid variation of skew-elliptical distributions is established under the assumption that the underlying density generators belong to the max-domain of attraction of the Gumbel distribution.
We introduce the concept of ``R-cyclic family'' of matrices with entries in a non-commutative probability space; the definition consists in asking that only the ``cyclic'' non-crossing cumulants of the entries of the matrices are allowed to be non-zero. Let A_{1}, ..., A_{s} be an R-cyclic family of d \times d matrices over a non-commutative probability space. We prove a convolution-type formula for the explicit computation of the joint distribution of A_{1}, ..., A_{s} (considered in M_{d} (\A) with the natural state), in terms of the joint distribution (considered in the original space) of t…
Compelling evidence-though yet no formal proof--has been adduced that the probability that a generic two-qubit state ($ρ$) is separable is $\frac{8}{33}$ (arXiv:1301.6617, arXiv:1109.2560, arXiv:0704.3723). Proceeding in related analytical frameworks, using a further determinantal moment formula of C. Dunkl (Appendix), we reach the conclusion that one-half of this probability arises when the determinantal inequality $|ρ^{PT}|>|ρ|$, where $PT$ denotes the partial transpose, is satisfied, and, the other half, when $|ρ|>|ρ^{PT}|$. These probabilities are taken with respect to the flat, Hilbert-Sc…
We study the problem of maximizing the probability that (i) an electric component or financial institution $X$ does not default before another component or institution $Y$ and (ii) that $X$ and $Y$ default jointly within the class of all random variables $X,Y$ with given univariate continuous distribution functions $F$ and $G$, respectively, and show that the maximization problems correspond to finding copulas maximizing the mass of the endograph $Γ^\leq(T)$ and the graph $Γ(T)$ of $T=G \circ F^-$, respectively. After providing simple, copula-based proofs for the existence of copulas attaining…
Conventional noncooperative game theory hypothesizes that the joint strategy of a set of players in a game must satisfy an "equilibrium concept". All other joint strategies are considered impossible; the only issue is what equilibrium concept is "correct". This hypothesis violates the desiderata underlying probability theory. Indeed, probability theory renders moot the problem of what equilibrium concept is correct - every joint strategy can arise with non-zero probability. Rather than a first-principles derivation of an equilibrium concept, game theory requires a first-principles derivation o…
Let (X,Y) be a bivariate elliptical random vector with associated random radius in the Gumbel max-domain of attraction. In this paper we obtain a second order asymptotic expansion of the joint survival probability P(X > x, Y> y) for x,y large. Further, based on the asymptotic bounds we discuss some aspects of the statistical modelling of joint survival probabilities and the survival conditional excess probability.
