We study planar gluon scattering amplitudes and Wilson loops in non-commutative gauge theory. Our main results are:
1. We find the map between observables in non-commutative gauge theory and their holographic dual. In that map, the region near the boundary of the gravitational dual describes the physics in terms of T-dual variables.
2. We show that in the presence of a large magnetic background and a UV regulator, a planar gluon scattering amplitude reduces to a complex polygon Wilson loop expectation value, dressed by a tractable polarization dependent factor.
We use holography and a string probe approach to compute the drag force on a quark moving in a thermal plasma of non-commutative Yang-Mills (NCYM) theories in various dimensions. The gravity background in these cases are described by a particular decoupling limit of non-extremal (D$(p-2)$, D$p$) brane bound state system. We show how the drag force on an external quark moving in the dual NCYM theories gets corrected due to non-commutativity and as a result the effective viscosity of the plasma gets reduced. We have obtained the drag force for both small and large non-commutativity. This was kno…
We propose a new program for computing a certain integrand of scattering amplitudes of four-dimensional gauge theories which we call the \textit{form factor integrand}, starting from 6d holomorphic theories on twistor space. We show that the form factor integrands can be expressed as sums of products of 1.) correlators of a 2d chiral algebra, related to the algebra of asymptotic symmetries uncovered recently in the celestial holography program, and 2.) OPE coefficients of a 4d non-unitary CFT. We prove that conformal blocks of the chiral algebras are in one-to-one correspondence with local ope…
Using techniques developed in a previous paper three-point functions in field theories described by holographic renormalization group flows are computed. We consider a system of one active scalar and one inert scalar coupled to gravity. For the GPPZ flow, their dual operators create states that are interpreted as glueballs of the N=1 SYM theory, which lies at the infrared end of the renormalization group flow. The scattering amplitudes for three-glueball processes are calculated providing precise predictions for glueball decays in N=1 SYM theory. Numerical results for low-lying glueballs are i…
Second order phase transitions are universally driven by an order parameter which becomes trivial at the critical point. At the same time, collective excitations which involve the amplitude of the order parameter develop a gap which smoothly closes to zero at criticality. We develop analytical techniques to study this "Higgs" mode in holographic systems which undergo a continuous phase transition at finite temperature and chemical potential. This allows us to study the linear response of the system at energy scales of the order of the gap. We express the Green's functions of scalar operators i…
Placing D3-branes at conical Calabi-Yau threefold singularities produces many AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$ duals. Recent progress in differential geometry has produced a technique (called K-stability) to recognize which singularities admit conical Calabi-Yau metrics. On the other hand, the algebraic technique of non-commutative crepant resolutions, involving matrix factorizations, has been developed to associate a quiver to a singularity. In this paper, we put together these ideas to produce new AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$ duals, with special emphasis on non-toric singularities.
We prove the flat space analogue of the Flato-Fronsdal theorem. It features the flat space singleton representation suggested recently. We do that by deriving a kernel that intertwines a pair of singleton representations with massless higher-spin fields in flat space. Next, we derive two-point functions of flat space singletons, which are then used to construct two- and three-point scattering amplitudes in the dual theory of massless higher-spin fields. These amplitudes agree with amplitudes in the chiral higher-spin theory.
We provide a brief summary of a method to calculate improvements to the Veneziano Amplitude, creating sub-leading non-linearities in the Regge trajectory of states. We formulate it as an extension of a computation by Makeenko and Olesen. We begin in a confining gauge theory coupled to matter, rewriting the meson scattering amplitude as a specific path integral over shapes and sizes of closed Wilson loops using the worldline formalism. We then prescribe how to further the computation at strong coupling by employing holography, which provides a prescription for the expectation value of these Wil…
We study the dynamics of D-branes in a smooth time-dependent background. The theory on the branes is a time-dependent non-commutative field theory. We find the metric and fluxes that determine the dual holographic closed string theory. This provides a concrete example of holography in a cosmological setting.
Recent attempts at the construction of holography for asymptotically flat spacetimes have taken two different routes. Celestial holography, involving a two dimensional (2d) CFT dual to 4d Minkowski spacetime, has generated novel results in asymptotic symmetry and scattering amplitudes. A different formulation, using Carrollian CFTs, has been principally used to provide some evidence for flat holography in lower dimensions. Understanding of flatspace scattering has been lacking in the Carroll framework. In this work, using ideas from Celestial holography, we show that 3d Carrollian CFTs living …
In this paper we study non-commutative Yang-Mills theory (NCYM) through its gravity dual. First it is shown that the gravity dual of an NCYM with self-dual $θ$-parameters has a Lagrangian in the form of five-dimensional dilatonic gravity. Then we use the de-Boer-Verlinde-Verlinde formalism for holographic renormalization group flows to calculate the coefficient functions in the Weyl anomaly of the NCYM at low energies under the assumption of potential dominance, and show that the $C$-theorem holds true in the present case.
In this thesis we give explicit results for bosonic string amplitudes on AdS_3 x S^3 and the corresponding plane-wave limit. We also analyze the consequences of our approach for understanding holography in this set up, as well as its possible generalization to other models.
In this paper, we propose a new approach to study the BPS dynamics in N=4 supersymmetric U(N) Yang-Mills theory on R X S^3, in order to better understand the emergence of gravity in the gauge theory. Our approach is based on supersymmetric, space-filling Q-balls with R-charge, which we call R-balls. The usual collective coordinate method for non-topological scalar solitons is applied to quantize the half and quarter BPS R-balls. In each case, a different quantization method is also applied to confirm the results from the collective coordinate quantization. For finite N, the half BPS R-balls wi…
It has recently been conjectured that the AdS_5/SYM_4 correspondence can be generalized away from the conformal limit, to a duality between supergravity on the full asymptotically flat three-brane background and a theory characterized as N=4 SYM deformed in the IR by a specific dimension-eight operator. Assuming that this relation is valid, we derive a prescription for computing n-point correlation functions in the holographic theory, which reduces to the standard AdS/CFT recipe at low energies. One- and two-point functions are discussed in detail. The prescription follows from very simple con…
These notes consist of 3 lectures on celestial holography given at the Pre-Strings school 2021. We start by reviewing how semiclassically, the subleading soft graviton theorem implies an enhancement of the Lorentz symmetry of scattering in four-dimensional asymptotically flat gravity to Virasoro. This leads to the construction of celestial amplitudes as $\mathcal{S}$-matrices computed in a basis of boost eigenstates. Both massless and massive asymptotic states are recast as insertions on the celestial sphere transforming as global conformal primaries under the Lorentz SL$(2, \mathbb{C})$. We c…
We investigate the description of the region behind the event horizon in rotating black holes in the AdS/CFT correspondence, using the rotating BTZ black hole as a concrete example. We extend a technique introduced by Kraus, Ooguri and Shenker [hep-th/0212277], based on analytically continuing amplitudes defined in a Euclidean space, to include rotation. In the rotating case, boundary amplitudes again have two different bulk descriptions, involving either integration only over the regions outside the black holes' event horizon, or integration over this region and the region between the event h…
We first perform bosonic T-duality transformation on one of the marginal TsT (T-duality, shift, T-duality)-deformed $AdS_5\times S_5$ spacetime, which corresponds to 4D $\mathcal{N}=4$ non-commutative super Yang-Mills theory (NCSYM). We then construct the solution to killing spinor equations of the resulting background, and perform the fermionic T-duality transformation. The final dual geometry becomes the usual $AdS_5\times S_5$ but with the constant NS-NS B-field depending on the non-commutative parameter. As applications, we study the gluon scattering amplitude and open string (Wilson loop)…
We present the exact solution for the scattering problem in the flat space Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity coupled to an arbitrary quantum field theory. JT gravity results in a gravitational dressing of field theoretical scattering amplitudes. The exact expression for the dressed $S$-matrix was previously known as a solvable example of a novel UV asymptotic behavior, dubbed asymptotic fragility. This dressing is equivalent to the $T\bar{T}$ deformation of the initial quantum field theory. JT gravity coupled to a single massless boson provides a promising action formulation for an integrable app…
Two dimensional Non-Commutative Open String (NCOS) theory, well-defined perturbatively, may also be studied at strong coupling and for large D-string charge by making use of the Holographic duality. We analyze the zero mode dynamics of a closed string in the appropriate background geometry and map the results onto a sector of strongly coupled NCOS dynamics. We find an elaborate classical picture that shares qualitative similarities with the SL(2,R) WZW model. In the quantum problem, we compute propagators and part of the energy spectrum of the theory; the latter involves interesting variations…
We show that renormalized non-commutative scalar field theories do not reduce to their planar sector in the limit of large non-commutativity. This follows from the fact that the RG equation of the Wilson-Polchinski type which describes the genus zero sector of non-commutative field theories couples generic planar amplitudes with non-planar amplitudes at exceptional values of the external momenta. We prove that the renormalization problem can be consistently restricted to this set of amplitudes. In the resulting renormalized theory non-planar divergences are treated as UV divergences requiring …
We study the critical exponents in the universal scaling laws of a holographic non-equilibrium steady state nearby its critical point of phase transition, which is driven by an AC electric field sitting in the boundary of the bulk. The applied electric filed drives the initial superconducting state into a non-equilibrium steady state with vanishing condensate as its amplitude is greater than a critical value. In the vicinity of the non-equilibrium critical point, we numerically calculate the six static and one dynamical critical exponents, and find that they have similar values to those in equ…
It is challenging to quantify chaos of QCD, because non-perturbative QCD accompanies non-local observables. By using holography, we find that QCD strings at large $N_c$ and strong coupling limit exhibit chaos, and measure their Lyapunov exponent at zero temperature. A pair of a quark and an antiquark separated by $L_q$ in the large $N_c$ QCD is dual to a Nambu-Goto string hanging from the spatial boundary of the D4-soliton geometry. We numerically solve the motion of the string after putting a pulse force on its boundaries. The chaos is observed for the amplitude of the force larger than a cer…
Celestial amplitude is a new reformulation of momentum space scattering amplitude and offers a promising way for flat holography. In this paper, we study the celestial amplitude in $\mathcal N=4$ Super-Yang-Mills (SYM) theory aiming at understanding the role of superconformal symmetry in celestial holography. We first construct the superconformal generators acting on the celestial superfield which assembles all the on-shell fields in the multiplet together in terms of celestial variables and Grassmann parameters. These generators satisfy the superconformal algebra of $\mathcal N=4$ SYM theory.…
We study non perturbative superpotentials for N=1 super Yang Mills from the point of view of large $N$ dualities. Starting with open topological strings we work out the relation between the closed string sector dilaton tadpole, which appears in the annulus amplitude, and NSNS fluxes in the closed string dual on the resolved conifold. For the mirror closed string dual version on the deformed conifold we derive, for a non vanishing $G_{3}$ form, the $N$ supersymmetric vacua and the transformations of $G_{3}$ through domain walls. Finally, as an extension of Fischler Susskind mechanism we find a …
We consider the Moyal deformation of self-dual gravity. In the conformal primary basis, holomorphic collinear limits of the amplitudes of this theory show that it enjoys a perturbatively exact symmetry algebra $LW_\wedge$ that generalises $Lw_\wedge$, the loop algebra of the wedge algebra of $w_{1+\infty}$, which appears in self-dual gravity.
This thesis is dedicated to the study of quasi-local boundary in quantum gravity in the 3D space-time case. This research takes root in the holographic principle, which conjectures that the geometry and the dynamic of a space-time region can be entirely described by a theory living on the boundary of this given region. The most studied case of this principle is the AdS/CFT correspondence, where the quantum fluctuations of an asymptotically AdS space are described by a conformal field theory living at spatial infinity, invariant under the Virasoro group. The philosophy applied in this thesis di…
We propose a holographic duality for a four dimensional WZW model with target manifold $\mathrm{SO}(8)$, coupled to scalar-flat Kähler gravity on an asymptotically flat, four dimensional background known as the Burns metric. The holographic dual is a two dimensional chiral algebra built out of gauged beta-gamma systems with $\mathrm{SO}(8)$ flavor. We test the duality by matching two-point correlators of soft gluon currents with two-point gluon amplitudes, and their leading OPE coefficients with collinear limits of three-point gluon amplitudes.
We examine the gluon scattering amplitude in N=4 super Yang-Mills at finite temperature with nonzero R-charge densities, and in Non-Commutative gauge theory at finite temperature. The gluon scattering amplitude is defined as a light-like Wilson loop which lives at the horizon of the T-dual black holes of the backgrounds we consider. We study in detail a special amplitude, which corresponds to forward scattering of a low energy gluon off a high energy one. For this kinematic configuration in the considered backgrounds, we find the corresponding minimal surface which is directly related to the g…
It is shown that the one-loop two-point amplitude in {\it Lorentz-invariant} non-commutative (NC) $ϕ^3$ theory is finite after subtraction in the commutative limit and satisfies the usual cutting rule, thereby eliminating the unitarity problem in Lorentz-non-invariant NC field theory in the approximation considered.
The correspondence between theories in anti-de Sitter space and conformal field theories in physical space-time leads to an analytic, semiclassical model for strongly-coupled QCD. Light-front holography allows hadronic amplitudes in the AdS fifth dimension to be mapped to frame-independent light-front wavefunctions of hadrons in physical space-time, thus providing a relativistic description of hadrons at the amplitude level. We identify the AdS coordinate $z$ with an invariant light-front coordinate $ζ$ which separates the dynamics of quark and gluon binding from the kinematics of constituent …

We study open string amplitudes with the D3-branes in type IIB superstring theory compactified on C^2/Z_2. We introduce constant graviphoton background along the branes and calculate disk amplitudes using the NSR formalism. We take the zero slope limit and investigate the effective Lagrangian on the D3-branes deformed by the graviphoton background. We find that the deformed Lagrangian agrees with that of N=2 supersymmetric U(N) gauge theory defined in non(anti)commutative N=1 superspace by choosing appropriate graviphoton background. It is also shown that abelian gauge theory defined in N=2 ha…
We show that the non-gravitational sectors of certain 6d and 5d supergravity theories can be decomposed into superconformal field theories (SCFTs) which are coupled together by pairwise identifying and gauging mutual global symmetries. In the case of 6d supergravity, we consider F-theory on compact elliptic Calabi-Yau 3-folds with base $B=T^4/\mathbb{Z}_n\times \mathbb{Z}_m$ and we show in many examples that the non-gravitational field theory sectors can be described as configurations of coupled 6d $(1,0)$ SCFTs. We also conjecture that the effective 2d $(0,4)$ SCFTs living on the self-dual st…
We explore the description of bulk causal structure in a dual field theory. We observe that in the spacetime dual to a spacelike non-commutative field theory, the causal structure in the boundary directions is modified asymptotically. We propose that this modification is described in the dual theory by a modification of the micro-causal light cone. Previous studies of this micro-causal light cone for spacelike non-commutativite field theories agree with the expectations from the bulk spacetime. We describe the spacetime dual to field theories with lightlike non-commutativity, and show that the…
We extend the complete Mellin (CM) representation of Feynman amplitudes to the non-commutative quantum field theories. This representation is a versatile tool. It provides a quick proof of meromorphy of Feynman amplitudes in parameters such as the dimension of space-time. In particular it paves the road for the dimensional renormalization of these theories. This complete Mellin representation also allows the study of asymptotic behavior under rescaling of arbitrary subsets of external invariants of any Feynman amplitude.
We consider theories of weakly interacting higher spin particles in flat spacetime. We focus on the four-point scattering amplitude at high energies and imaginary scattering angles. The leading asymptotic of the amplitude in this regime is universal and equal to the corresponding limit of the Veneziano amplitude. In this paper, we find that the first sub-leading correction to this asymptotic is universal as well. We compute the correction using a model of relativistic strings with massive endpoints. We argue that it is unique using holography, effective theory of long strings and bootstrap tec…
Recent work in the literature has studied the quantum-mechanical decay of a Schwarzschild-like black hole, formed by gravitational collapse, into almost-flat space-time and weak radiation at a very late time. The relevant quantum amplitudes have been evaluated for bosonic and fermionic fields, showing that no information is lost in collapse to a black hole. On the other hand, recent developments in noncommutative geometry have shown that, in general relativity, the effects of noncommutativity can be taken into account by keeping the standard form of the Einstein tensor on the left-hand side of…
We explore the celestial holography proposal for non-trivial asymptotically flat backgrounds including the Coulomb field of a static and spinning point charge, their gravitational counterparts described by the Schwarzschild and Kerr metrics, as well as the Aichelburg-Sexl shockwave and spinning shockwave geometries and their electromagnetic cousins. We compute celestial two-point amplitudes on these Kerr-Schild type backgrounds which have the desirable feature, due to the presence of an external source, that they are non-vanishing for general operator positions and are not constrained by the k…
We show that the high temperature behavior of non-commutative QED may be simply obtained from Boltzmann transport equations for classical particles. The transport equation for the charge neutral particle is shown to be characteristically different from that for the charged particle. These equations correctly generate, for arbitrary values of the non-commutative parameter theta, the leading, gauge independent hard thermal loops, arising from the fermion and the gauge sectors. We briefly discuss the generating functional of hard thermal amplitudes.
We quantize non-commutative Maxwell theory canonically in the background field gauge for weak and slowly varying background fields. We determine the complete basis for expansion under such an approximation. As an application, we derive the Wigner function which determines the leading order high temperature behavior of the perturbative amplitudes of non-commutative Maxwell theory. To leading order, we also give a closed form expression for the distribution function for the non-commutative $U (1)$ gauge theory at high temperature.
Our motivation is to find the relationship between the commutator of coordinates and uncertainty relation involving only the coordinates. The boundary condition with constant background field is connected with the rotation of D-brane at general angle. And the mode expansions of D-brane we found is more reasonable than those appeared in literature. The partition functions and scattering amplitudes are also discussed.
We analyze the unitarity of a non-relativistic non-commutative scalar field theory. We show that electric backgrounds spoil unitarity while magnetic ones do not. Furthermore, unlike its relativistic counterparts, unitarity can not be restored (at least at the level of one-to-one scattering amplitude) by adding new states to the theory. This is a signal that the model cannot be embedded in a natural way in string theory.
