We present measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation temperature anisotropy in the multipole range 2000<ell<3000 from the QUaD telescope's second and third observing seasons. After masking the brightest point sources our results are consistent with the primary LCDM expectation alone. We estimate the contribution of residual (un-masked) radio point sources using a model calibrated to our own bright source observations, and a full simulation of the source finding and masking procedure. Including this contribution slightly improves the chi^2. We also fit a standard SZ template to the bandpowers and see no strong evidence of an SZ contribution, which is as expected for sigma_8 approx 0.8.
I show that the quadrupole of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) evolves more rapidly than previously expected, as a result of the acceleration of the Sun towards the Galactic center. The acceleration, measured most recently by Gaia EDR3, implies a fractional change in the quadrupole of ~10^{-9} per year, an order of magnitude larger than expected from the evolution in the last scattering surface of the CMB.
The scattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation in galaxy clusters induces polarization signals according to the quadrupole anisotropy in the photon distribution at the cluster location. This `remote quadrupole' derived from the measurements of the induced polarization provides an opportunity for reconstructing primordial fluctuations on large scales. We discuss that comparing the local CMB quadrupoles predicted by these reconstructed primordial fluctuations and the direct measurements done by CMB satellites may enable us to test the dark energy beyond cosmic variance limits.
In this article we present a formalism to incorporate the partial-sky maps to the Gibbs ILC algorithm to estimate the joint posterior density of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) signal and the theoretical CMB angular power spectrum given the observed CMB maps. In order to generate the partial-sky maps we mask all the observed CMB maps provided by WMAP and Planck satellite mission using a Gaussian smoothed mask formed on the basis of thermal dust emissions in Planck 353 GHz map. The central galactic region from all the input maps is removed after the application of the smoothed mask. While…
Residual error in calibration coefficients corresponding to observed CMB maps is an important issue while estimating a pure CMB signal. A component separation method, if these errors in the input foreground contaminated CMB maps are not properly taken into account, may lead to bias in the cleaned CMB map and estimated CMB angular power spectrum. But the inability to exactly determine the calibration coefficients corresponding to each observed CMB map from any CMB experiment makes it very difficult to incorporate their exact and actual values in a component separation analysis. Hence the effect…
We propose a new internal linear combination (ILC) method in the pixel space, applicable on large angular scales of the sky, to estimate a foreground minimized Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropy map by incorporating prior knowledge about the theoretical CMB covariance matrix. Usual ILC method in pixel space, on the contrary, does not use any information about the underlying CMB covariance matrix. The new approach complements the usual pixel space ILC technique specifically at low multipole region, using global information available from theoretical CMB covariance matrix a…
In this work, we formalize a new technique to investigate joint posterior density of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) signal and its theoretical angular power spectrum given the observed data, using the global internal-linear-combination (ILC) method first proposed by Sudevan & Saha (2017). We implement the method on low resolution CMB maps observed by WMAP and Planck satellite missions, using Gibbs sampling, assuming that the detector noise is negligible on large angular scales of the sky. The main products of our analysis are best fit CMB cleaned map and its theoretical angular power spectr…
The usual inflationary scenario predicts a Gaussian random primordial density fluctuation, different Fourier modes of which do not correlate with each other. In this paper we propose a correlation between these different modes. A simple case is that these different Fourier modes correlate with each other following a Gaussian function. For such a primordial density fluctuation we calculate the CMB angular power spectrum and find that its amplitude decreases but the decrease is different for different $l$. This feature can be used to constrain the the correlation strength from the real data.
Reliable extraction of cosmological information from observed cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps may require removal of strongly foreground contaminated regions from the analysis. In this article, we employ an artificial neural network (ANN) to predict the full sky CMB angular power spectrum between intermediate to large angular scales from the partial sky spectrum obtained from masked CMB temperature anisotropy map. We use a simple ANN architecture with one hidden layer containing $895$ neurons. Using $1.2 \times 10^{5}$ training samples of full sky and corresponding partial sky CMB angul…
Scattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation in galaxy clusters induces polarization signals determined by the quadrupole anisotropy in the photon distribution at the location of clusters. This "remote quadrupole" derived from the measurements of the induced polarization in galaxy clusters provides an opportunity of reconstruction of local CMB temperature anisotropies. In this {\em Letter} we develop an algorithm of the reconstruction through the estimation of the underlying primordial gravitational potential, which is the origin of the CMB temperature and polarization fluctuation…
The Planck mission, designed for making measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation with unprecedented accuracy and angular resolution, is expected to release its first data set in the near future. For the first time in the CMB history, extensive measurements of the CMB polarization will be made available for the entire sky. Such precise and rich data are expected to contain a great wealth of information about the Universe. The information in the CMB data is conveniently represented in terms of angular power spectra for temperature and polarization. A proper estimation of t…
Primordial magnetic fields lead to non-Gaussian signals in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) even at the lowest order, as magnetic stresses, and the temperature anisotropy they induce, depend quadratically on the magnetic field. In contrast, CMB non-Gaussianity due to inflationary scalar perturbations arise only as a higher order effect. We propose here a novel probe of stochastic primordial magnetic fields that exploits the characteristic CMB non-Gaussianity that they induce. In particular, we compute the CMB bispectrum ($b_{l_{_1}l_{_2}l_{_3}}$) induced by stochastic primordial fields on…
We investigate the extent to which foreground cleaned CMB maps can be used to estimate the cosmological parameters at small scales. We use the SMICA method, a blind separation technique which works directly at the spectral level. In this work we focus on the small scales of the CMB angular power spectrum, which are chiefly affected by noise and extragalactic foregrounds, such as point sources. We adapt SMICA to use only cross-spectra between data maps, thus avoiding the noise bias. In this study, performed both on simulations and on Planck 2015 data, we fit for extragalactic point sources by m…
I describe a method to estimate response matrices of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lensing power spectra estimators to the true sky power under realistic conditions. Applicable to all lensing reconstruction pipelines based on quadratic estimators (QE), it uses a small number of Gaussian CMB Monte-Carlos and specially designed QE's in order to obtain sufficiently accurate matrices with little computational effort. This method may be used to improve the modelling of CMB lensing band-powers by incorporating at least some of the non-idealities encountered in CMB lensing reconstruction. These n…
While the observed nearly scale-invariant initial power spectrum is regarded as one of the favorable evidence of the standard inflationary cosmology, precision observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies also suggest possible existence of nontrivial features such as those observed around multipoles $\ell\sim120$ by WMAP. Here, we examine the Planck data and investigate the effects of these features on the cosmological parameter estimation performing the Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo (MCMC) analysis. We find that the features exist in the Planck data at the same position as th…
If the principle of statistical isotropy is valid, then the angular power spectrum (APS) of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation is uncorrelated between different multipoles. We propose a novel technique to analyse any possible correlations of the foreground cleaned CMB temperature angular power spectrum (APS) measures ($C_{\ell}$ and $\mathcal{D}_\ell=\frac{\ell(\ell+1)}{2π}C_\ell$). This is motivated by the behaviour of level spacings between random matrix eigenvalues. The method helps distinguish uncorrelated statistically isotropic CMB APS from correlated APS, where the latter can a…
Gaussianity and statistical isotropy of the Universe are modern cosmology's minimal set of hypotheses. In this work we introduce a new statistical test to detect observational deviations from this minimal set. By defining the temperature correlation function over the whole celestial sphere, we are able to independently quantify both angular and planar dependence (modulations) of the CMB temperature power spectrum over different slices of this sphere. Given that planar dependence leads to further modulations of the usual angular power spectrum $C_l$, this test can potentially reveal richer stru…
In the context of cosmic microwave background (CMB) data analysis, we compare the efficiency at large scale of two angular power spectrum algorithms, implementing, respectively, the quadratic maximum likelihood (QML) estimator and the pseudo spectrum (pseudo-Cl) estimator. By exploiting 1000 realistic Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, we find that the QML approach is markedly superior in the range l=[2-100]. At the largest angular scales, e.g. l < 10, the variance of the QML is almost 1/3 (1/2) that of the pseudo-Cl, when we consider the WMAP kq85 (kq85 enlarged by 8 degrees) mask, making the pseu…
The BB-mode angular correlation power spectrum of CMB is obtained by considering the primordial gravitational waves in the squeezed vacuum state for various inflationary models and results are compared with the joint analysis of the BICEP2/Keck Array and Planck 353 GHz data. The present results may constrain several models of inflation.
The connection between the dipolar modulation asymmetry and the quadrupole-octopole alignment in the CMB is studied in this work. First, a generalization of the dipolar modulation model is proposed by considering that the amplitude may depend on the scale. As derived from a Bayesian inference analysis, this model fits the CMB data better than the scale-independent one. As an extension of the standard model, the scale-dependent dipolar modulation shows comparable evidence to the standard isotropic model in the large scales ($\ell_\mathrm{max} \leq 64$). The posterior distribution of the paramet…
We consider the effect of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) frequency spectral distortions arising due to the Compton scattering of the anisotropic radiation on Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) clusters. We derive the correction to the thermal SZ effect due to the presence of multipoles with $\ell=1,2,3$ in the anisotropy of the CMB radiation. We show that this effect gives us an opportunity for an independent evaluation of the CMB dipole, quadrupole and octupole angular anisotropy in our location using distorted signal from the nearby galaxy clusters and to distinguish between the Sachs-Wolfe (SW)…
We have investigated the angular correlation in the recent CMB data. In addition to the known large-angle correlation anomaly, we find the lack of correlation at small angles with high statistical significance. We have investigated various non-cosmological contamination and additionally WMAP team's simulated data. However, we have not found a definite cause. In the angular power spectrum of WMAP data, there exist anomalous odd-parity preference at low multipoles. Noting the equivalence between the power spectrum and the correlation, we have investigated the association between the lack of larg…
The angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies is a good probe to look into the primordial density fluctuations at large scales in the universe. Here we re-examine the angular power spectrum of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe data, paying particular attention to the fine structures (oscillations) at $\ell=100 \sim 150$ reported by several authors. Using Monte-Carlo simulations, we confirm that the gap from the simple power law spectrum is a rare event, about 2.5--3$σ$, if these fine structures are generated by experimental noise and the co…
We reconstruct shear maps and angular power spectra from simulated weakly lensed total intensity (TT) and polarised (EB) maps of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies, obtained using Born approximated ray-tracing through the N-body simulated Cold Dark Matter (CDM) structures in the Millennium Simulations (MS). We compare the recovered signal with the $Λ$CDM prediction, on the whole interval of angular scales which is allowed by the finite box size, extending from the degree scale to the arcminute, by applying a quadratic estimator in the flat sky limit; we consider PRISM-like inst…
We study the directional dependence of the angular two-point correlation function in maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We propose two new statistics, one which measures the correlation of each point in the sky with a ring of points separated angle theta away, and a second that measures the missing angular correlation above 60 degrees as a function of direction. Using these statistics, we find that most of the low power in cut-sky maps measured by the WMAP experiment comes from unusually low contributions from the directions of the lobes of the quadrupole and the octupole. These fi…
Estimation of the angular power spectrum is one of the important steps in Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data analysis. Here, we present a nonparametric estimate of the temperature angular power spectrum for the Planck 2013 CMB data. The method implemented in this work is model-independent, and allows the data, rather than the model, to dictate the fit. Since one of the main targets of our analysis is to test the consistency of the $Λ$CDM model with Planck 2013 data, we use the nuisance parameters associated with the best-fit $Λ$CDM angular power spectrum to remove foreground contributions …
We investigate the contribution of cosmic string loops to the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies. This is done by extending the Unconnected Segment Model (USM) to include the contribution of the cosmic string loops created throughout the cosmological evolution of a cosmic string network to the stress-energy tensor. We then implement this extended USM in the publicly available CMBACT code and obtain the linear CDM power spectrum and the CMB angular power spectra generated by cosmic string loops. We find that the shape of the angular power spectra generated by loops is, in general, s…
Weak gravitational lensing of the CMBR manifests as a secondary anisotropy in the temperature maps. The effect, quantified through the shear and convergence fields imprint the underlying large scale structure (LSS), geometry and evolution history of the Universe. It is hence perceived to be an important observational probe of cosmology. De-lensing the CMBR temperature maps is also crucial for detecting the gravitational wave generated B-modes. Future observations of redshifted 21-cm radiation from the cosmological neutral hydrogen (HI) distribution hold the potential of probing the LSS over a …
We evaluate the contribution of cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization spectra to cosmological parameter constraints. We produce cosmological parameters using high-quality CMB polarization data from the ground-based QUaD experiment and demonstrate for the majority of parameters that there is significant improvement on the constraints obtained from satellite CMB polarization data. We split a multi-experiment CMB dataset into temperature and polarization subsets and show that the best-fit confidence regions for the LCDM 6-parameter cosmological model are consistent with each other, and t…
This is my contribution to Proceedings of the International Workshop on Cosmic Structure and Evolution, September 23-25, 2009, Bielefeld, Germany. In my talk I presented some non-Gaussian features of the foreground reduced WMAP five year full sky temperature maps, which were recently reported in arXiv:0906.4954 paper by V.Vanchurin. And in these notes I first discuss the statistics behind this analysis in some detail. Then I describe invaluable insights which I got from discussions after my talk on the Workshop. And finally I explain why, in my current opinion, the signal detected in arXiv:090…
Small scale CMB angular power spectrum contains not only primordial CMB information but also many contaminants coming from secondary anisotropies. Most of the latter depend on the cosmological model but are often marginalised over. We propose a new analysis of the SPT data focusing on the cosmological contribution of the thermal Sunyaev Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect. We model the tSZ angular spectrum with the halo model and train a random forest algorithm to speed up its computation. We show that using the cosmological information of the tSZ on top of the primordial CMB one contained in SPT data bri…
Circular polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) offers the possibility of detecting rotations of the universe and magnetic fields in the primeval universe or in distant clusters of galaxies. We used the Milano Polarimeter (MIPOL) installed at the Testa Grigia Observatory, on the italian Alps, to improve the existing upper limits to the CMB circular polarization at large angular scales. We obtain 95% confidence level upper limits to the degree of the CMB circular polarization ranging between 5.0x10^{-4} and 0.7x10^{-4} at angular scales between 8 and 24 deg, improving by one orde…
The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation B mode polarization signal contains the unique signature of primordial metric perturbations produced during the inflation. The separation of the weak CMB B-mode signal from strong foreground contamination in observed maps is a complex task, and proposed new generation low noise satellite missions compete with the weak signal level of this gravitational background. In this article, for the first time, we employ a foreground model-independent internal linear combination (ILC) method to reconstruct the CMB B mode signal using simulated observations …
Recent CMB observations have resulted in very precise observational data. A robust and reliable CMB reconstruction technique can lead to efficient estimation of the cosmological parameters. We demonstrate the performance of our methodology using simulated temperature and polarization observations using cosmic variance limited future generation PRISM satellite mission. We generate samples from the joint distribution by implementing the CMB inverse covariance weighted internal-linear-combination (ILC) with the Gibbs sampling technique. We use the Python Sky Model (PySM), d4f1s1 to generate the r…
The angular two-point correlation function of the temperature of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), as inferred from nearly all-sky maps, is very close to zero on large angular scales. A statistic invented to quantify this feature, $S_{1/2}$, has a value sufficiently low that only about 7 in 1000 simulations generated assuming the standard cosmological model have lower values; i.e., it has a $p$-value of 0.007. As such, it is one of several unusual features of the CMB sky on large scales, including the low value of the observed CMB quadrupole, whose importance is unclear: are they multiple…
Several intriguing phenomena, unlikely within the standard inflationary cosmology, were reported in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data from WMAP and appear to be uncorrelated. Two of these phenomena, termed CMB anomalies, are representative of their disparate nature: the North-South asymmetry in the CMB angular-correlation strength, inconsistent with an isotropic universe, and the cold spot, producing a significant deviation from Gaussianity. We find a cause-effect relationship between them, at medium angular scales (l = 11 - 20): we show that a successive diminution of the cold spot (…
Polarized foregrounds are going to be a serious challenge for detecting CMB cosmological B-modes. Both diffuse Galactic emission and extragalactic sources contribute significantly to the power spectrum on large angular scales. At low frequencies, Galactic synchrotron emission will dominate with fractional polarization $\sim 20-40%$ at high latitudes while radio sources can contribute significantly even on large ($\sim 1^{\circ}$) angular scales. Nevertheless, simulations suggest that a detection at the level of $r=0.001$ might be achievable if the foregrounds are not too complex.
We investigate some of the asymmetries reported in the CMB temperature angular distribution considering the ΛCDM model in the 3, 5 and 7 year WMAP data. We aim to analyze the 4 quadrants of the ILC CMB maps using 3 Galactic cuts: the WMAP KQ85 mask, a |b|<10 degrees and the WMAP KQ85 mask +|b|<10 degrees Galactic cuts. We used the two-point angular correlation function in the WMAP maps for each of their quadrants. The same procedure was done for 1000 Monte Carlo simulations that were produced using the WMAP team ΛCDM best-fit power spectrum. We also changed the quadrupole and octopole amplitud…
The Quadratic Maximum Likelihood estimator can be used to reconstruct the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) power spectra with minimal error bars. Still, it requires an accurate estimate of the datasets noise covariance matrix in order to be corrected for spurious bias. We describe an extension of this method to cross-correlation, thus removing noise bias and mitigating the impact of systematic effects, providing they are uncorrelated. This estimator is tested on two simulation surveys at large and intermediate angular scales, respectively corresponding to satellite and ground-based CMB experi…
We propose a hybrid quadratic estimator to measure cross correlations between gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and differential screening effects arising from fluctuations in the electron column density, such as could arise from patchy reionization. The hybrid quadratic estimators are validated by simulated data sets with both Planck and CMB-Stage 4 (CMB-S4) instrumental properties and found to be able to recover the cross-power spectra with almost no biases. We apply this technique to Planck 2015 temperature data and obtain cross-power spectra between gravitation…
We use a Quadratic Maximum Likelihood (QML) method to estimate the angular power spectrum of the cross-correlation between cosmic microwave background and large scale structure maps as well as their individual auto-spectra. We describe our implementation of this method and demonstrate its accuracy on simulated maps. We apply this optimal estimator to WMAP 7-year and NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) data and explore the robustness of the angular power spectrum estimates obtained by the QML method. With the correction of the declination systematics in NVSS, we can safely use most of the information co…
We use the 2015 Planck likelihood in combination with the Bicep2/Keck likelihood (BKP and BK14) to constrain the chirality, $χ$, of primordial gravitational waves in a scale-invariant scenario. In this framework, the parameter $χ$ enters theory always coupled to the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, e.g. in combination of the form $χ\cdot r$. Thus, the capability to detect $χ$ critically depends on the value of $r$. We find that with present data set $χ$ is \textit{de facto}unconstrained. We also provide forecasts for $χ$ from future CMB experiments, including COrE+, exploring several fiducial valu…
Genetic Algorithm (GA) -- motivated by natural evolution -- is a robust method to estimate the global optimal solutions of problems involving multiple objective functions. In this article, for the first time, we apply GA to reconstruct the CMB temperature anisotropy map over large angular scales of the sky using (internal) linear combination (ILC) of the final-year WMAP and Planck satellite observations. To avoid getting trapped into a local minimum, we implement the GA with generous diversity in the populations by selecting pairs with diverse fitness coefficients and by introducing a small bu…
The measured CMB angular distribution shows a great consistency with the LCDM model. However, isotropy violations were reported in CMB temperature maps of both WMAP and Planck data. We investigate the influence of different masks employed in the analysis of CMB angular distribution, in particular in the excess of power in the Southeastern quadrant (SEQ) and the lack of power in the Northeastern quadrant (NEQ). We compare the two-point correlation function (TPCF) computed for each quadrant of the CMB foreground-cleaned temperature maps to 1000 simulations generated assuming the LCDM best-fit po…
The CMB maps obtained by observations always possess domains which have to be masked due to severe uncertainties with respect to the genuine CMB signal. Cosmological analyses ideally use full CMB maps in order to get e.g. the angular power spectrum. There are attempts to reconstruct the masked regions at least at low resolutions, i.e. at large angular scales, before a further analysis follows. In this paper, the quality of the reconstruction is investigated for the ILC (7yr) map as well as for 1000 CMB simulations of the LambdaCDM concordance model. The latter allows an error estimation for th…
The lensing power spectrum from cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature maps will be measured with unprecedented precision with upcoming experiments, including upgrades to ACT and SPT. Achieving significant improvements in cosmological parameter constraints, such as percent level errors on sigma_8 and an uncertainty on the total neutrino mass of approximately 50 meV, requires percent level measurements of the CMB lensing power. This necessitates tight control of systematic biases. We study several types of biases to the temperature-based lensing reconstruction signal from foreground sour…
In this work, we study a direction dependent power spectrum in anisotropic Finsler space-time. We use this direction dependent power spectrum to address the low-l power observed in WMAP and PLANCK data. The angular power spectrum of the temperature fluctuations has a lower amplitude in comparison to the $Λ$CDM model in the multipole range l = 2-40. Our theoretical model gives a correction to the isotropic angular power spectrum $C^{TT}_l$ due to the breaking of the rotational invariance of the primordial power spectrum. We estimate best-fit model parameters along with the six $Λ$CDM cosmologic…
We propose a framework of Finsler space-time to explain the observed parity asymmetry and the power deficit in the low-$\ell$ ($2\leqslant \ell \leqslant 29$) multipole range of cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies. In the $3+1$ dimensional space-time, the three-dimensional space is described by a Randers-Finsler space, which is spatially irreversible, inducing the parity asymmetry in the CMB angular power spectrum. We estimate the constraints on the two parameters introduced by Finsler space-time via analyzing the low-$\ell$ angular power spectrum in PLANCK 2015 CMB temp…
Galaxy angular-power spectrum and autocorrelation functions (ACFs) provide information about the distribution of matter by using galaxy counts as a proxy. In this study, we are going to estimate autocorrelation angular power spectrum and angular autocorrelation function for EMU-ASKAP 5 sigma sources and then compare them with results from NVSS. We will also use SUMSS data to compare ACF results using Landy-Szalay estimator. EMU-ASKAP will provide excellent opportunity to observe universe with high sensitivity and is likely going to observe millions of high redshift sources which will help in s…
The exquisitely measured maps of fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) present the possibility to test the principle of Statistical Isotropy (SI) of the Universe through systematic observable measures for non-Statistical Isotropy (nSI) features in the data. Recent measurements of the CMB temperature field provide tantalizing evidence of the deviation from SI. A systematic approach based on strong mathematical formulation allows any nSI feature to be traced to known physical effects or observational artefacts. Unexplained nSI features could have immense cosmological ramification…
We constrain the rotation angle $α$ of the linear polarization of CMB photons using the large angular scale (up to $\sim 4^\circ$) signal in WMAP 7 year data. At these scales, the CMB polarization pattern probes mostly the reionization era. A genuine rotation may be interpreted as cosmological birefringence, which is a well known tracer of new physics, through the breakdown of fundamental symmetries. Our analysis provides $α= -1.6^{\circ} \pm 1.7^{\circ} (3.4^{\circ})$ at 68% (95%) C.L. for the multipoles range $Δ\ell = 2-47$ not including an instrumental systematic uncertainty that the WMAP t…
We report an improved technique for diffuse foreground minimization from Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) maps using a new multi-phase iterative internal-linear-combination (ILC) approach in harmonic space. The new procedure consists of two phases. In phase 1, a diffuse foreground cleaned map is obtained by performing a usual ILC operation in the harmonic space in a single iteration over the desired portion of the sky. In phase 2, we obtain the final foreground cleaned map using an iterative ILC approach also in the harmonic space, however, now, during each iteration of foreground minimizatio…
In the recent years, the internal-linear-combination (ILC) method was investigated extensively in the context of reconstruction of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropy signal using observations obtained by WMAP and Planck satellite missions. In this article, we, for the first time, apply the ILC method to reconstruct the large scale CMB E mode polarization signal, which serves as the unique probe of ionization history of the Universe, using simulated observations of 15 frequency CMB polarization maps of future generation COrE satellite mission. We find that usual ILC cleane…
Beam asymmetries result in statistically-anisotropic cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps. Typically, they are studied for their effects on the CMB power spectrum, however they more closely mimic anisotropic effects such as gravitational lensing and primordial power asymmetry. We discuss tools for studying the effects of beam asymmetry on general quadratic estimators of anisotropy, analytically for full-sky observations as well as in the analysis of realistic data. We demonstrate this methodology in application to a recently-detected 9 sigma quadrupolar modulation effect in the WMAP data, sh…
We introduce a new estimator of the CMB lensing power spectrum, together with its likelihood, based on iterative lensing reconstruction. Despite the increased complexity of the lensing maps, this estimator shares similarities with the standard quadratic estimator. Most importantly, it is unbiased towards the assumptions done on the noise and cosmology for the lensing reconstruction. This new spectrum estimator can double the constraints on the lensing amplitude compared to the quadratic estimator, while keeping numerical cost under control and being robust to errors.
