It is previously shown that proper random linear samples of a finite discrete signal (vector) which has a sparse representation in an orthonormal basis make it possible (with probability 1) to recover the original signal. Moreover, the choice of the linear samples does not depend on the sparsity domain. In this paper, we will show that the replacement of random linear samples with deterministic functions of the signal (not necessarily linear) will not result in unique reconstruction of k-sparse signals except for k=1. We will show that there exist deterministic nonlinear sampling functions for unique reconstruction of 1- sparse signals while deterministic linear samples fail to do so.

We consider the problem of recovering the superposition of $R$ distinct complex exponential functions from compressed non-uniform time-domain samples. Total Variation (TV) minimization or atomic norm minimization was proposed in the literature to recover the $R$ frequencies or the missing data. However, it is known that in order for TV minimization and atomic norm minimization to recover the missing data or the frequencies, the underlying $R$ frequencies are required to be well-separated, even when the measurements are noiseless. This paper shows that the Hankel matrix recovery approach can su…
The central idea of compressed sensing is to exploit the fact that most signals of interest are sparse in some domain and use this to reduce the number of measurements to encode. However, if the sparsity of the input signal is not precisely known, but known to lie within a specified range, compressed sensing as such cannot exploit this fact and would need to use the same number of measurements even for a very sparse signal. In this paper, we propose a novel method called Compressed Shattering to adapt compressed sensing to the specified sparsity range, without changing the sensing matrix by cr…
In this paper, we analyze the information theoretic lower bound on the necessary number of samples needed for recovering a sparse signal under different compressed sensing settings. We focus on the weighted graph model, a model-based framework proposed by Hegde et al. (2015), for standard compressed sensing as well as for one-bit compressed sensing. We study both the noisy and noiseless regimes. Our analysis is general in the sense that it applies to any algorithm used to recover the signal. We carefully construct restricted ensembles for different settings and then apply Fano's inequality to …
In this paper, we study a support set reconstruction problem in which the signals of interest are jointly sparse with a common support set, and sampled by joint sparsity model-2 (JSM-2) in the presence of noise. Using mathematical tools, we develop upper and lower bounds on the failure probability of support set reconstruction in terms of the sparsity, the ambient dimension, the minimum signal to noise ratio, the number of measurement vectors and the number of measurements. These bounds can be used to provide a guideline to determine the system parameters in various applications of compressed …
We investigate the problem of estimating the unknown degree of sparsity from compressive measurements without the need to carry out a sparse recovery step. While the sparsity order can be directly inferred from the effective rank of the observation matrix in the multiple snapshot case, this appears to be impossible in the more challenging single snapshot case. We show that specially designed measurement matrices allow to rearrange the measurement vector into a matrix such that its effective rank coincides with the effective sparsity order. In fact, we prove that matrices which are composed of …
Structure dependent sampling in compressed sensing: theoretical guarantees for tight frames
Compressed Sensing (CS) is an appealing framework for applications such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). However, up-to-date, the sensing schemes suggested by CS theories are made of random isolated measurements, which are usually incompatible with the physics of acquisition. To reflect the physical constraints of the imaging device, we introduce the notion of blocks of measurements: the sensing scheme is not a set of isolated measurements anymore, but a set of groups of measurements which may represent any arbitrary shape (parallel or radial lines for instance). Structured acquisition wit…
Motivated by the question of optimal functional approximation via compressed sensing, we propose generalizations of the Iterative Hard Thresholding and the Compressive Sampling Matching Pursuit algorithms able to promote sparse in levels signals. We show, by means of numerical experiments, that the proposed algorithms are successfully able to outperform their unstructured variants when the signal exhibits the sparsity structure of interest. Moreover, in the context of piecewise smooth function approximation, we numerically demonstrate that the structure promoting decoders outperform their unst…
In this paper, based on a successively accuracy-increasing approximation of the $\ell_0$ norm, we propose a new algorithm for recovery of sparse vectors from underdetermined measurements. The approximations are realized with a certain class of concave functions that aggressively induce sparsity and their closeness to the $\ell_0$ norm can be controlled. We prove that the series of the approximations asymptotically coincides with the $\ell_1$ and $\ell_0$ norms when the approximation accuracy changes from the worst fitting to the best fitting. When measurements are noise-free, an optimization s…
The weak-$\ell^p$ norm can be used to define a measure $s$ of sparsity. When we compute $s$ for the discrete cosine transform coefficients of a signal, the value of $s$ is related to the information content of said signal. We use this value of $s$ to define a reference-free index $\mathcal{E}$, called the sparsity index, that we can use to predict with high accuracy the quality of signal reconstruction in the setting of compressed sensing imaging. That way, when compressed sensing is framed in the context of sampling theory, we can use $\mathcal{E}$ to decide when to further partition the samp…
We consider channel estimation within pulse-shaping multicarrier multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems transmitting over doubly selective MIMO channels. This setup includes MIMO orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems as a special case. We show that the component channels tend to exhibit an approximate joint group sparsity structure in the delay-Doppler domain. We then develop a compressive channel estimator that exploits this structure for improved performance. The proposed channel estimator uses the methodology of multichannel group sparse compressed sensing, w…
This paper deals with two related problems, namely distance-preserving binary embeddings and quantization for compressed sensing . First, we propose fast methods to replace points from a subset $\mathcal{X} \subset \mathbb{R}^n$, associated with the Euclidean metric, with points in the cube $\{\pm 1\}^m$ and we associate the cube with a pseudo-metric that approximates Euclidean distance among points in $\mathcal{X}$. Our methods rely on quantizing fast Johnson-Lindenstrauss embeddings based on bounded orthonormal systems and partial circulant ensembles, both of which admit fast transforms. Our…
We study the problem of approximately recovering signals on a manifold from one-bit linear measurements drawn from either a Gaussian ensemble, partial circulant ensemble, or bounded orthonormal ensemble and quantized using Sigma-Delta or distributed noise shaping schemes. We assume we are given a Geometric Multi-Resolution Analysis, which approximates the manifold, and we propose a convex optimization algorithm for signal recovery. We prove an upper bound on the recovery error which outperforms prior works that use memoryless scalar quantization, requires a simpler analysis, and extends the cl…
In the present note we develop some theoretical results in the theory of anisotropic compressed sensing that allow to take structured sparsity and variable density structured sampling into account. We expect that the obtained results will be useful to derive explicit expressions for optimal sampling strategies in the non-Cartesian (radial, spiral, etc.) setting in MRI.
Sparsity and entropy are pillar notions of modern theories in signal processing and information theory. However, there is no clear consensus among scientists on the characterization of these notions. Previous efforts have contributed to understand individually sparsity or entropy from specific research interests. This paper proposes a mathematical formalism, a joint axiomatic characterization, which contributes to comprehend (the beauty of) sparsity and entropy. The paper gathers and introduces inherent and first principles criteria as axioms and attributes that jointly characterize sparsity a…
Parallel MRI (pMRI) and compressed sensing MRI (CS-MRI) have been considered as two distinct reconstruction problems. Inspired by recent k-space interpolation methods, an annihilating filter based low-rank Hankel matrix approach (ALOHA) is proposed as a general framework for sparsity-driven k-space interpolation method which unifies pMRI and CS-MRI. Specifically, our framework is based on the fundamental duality between the transform domain sparsity in the primary space and the low-rankness of weighted Hankel matrix in the reciprocal space, which converts pMRI and CS-MRI to a k-space interpola…
Compressed sensing has been employed to reduce the pilot overhead for channel estimation in wireless communication systems. Particularly, structured turbo compressed sensing (STCS) provides a generic framework for structured sparse signal recovery with reduced computational complexity and storage requirement. In this paper, we consider the problem of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) channel estimation in a frequency division duplexing (FDD) downlink system. By exploiting the structured sparsity in the angle-frequency domain (AFD) a…

In this work, we consider compressed sensing reconstruction from $M$ measurements of $K$-sparse structured signals which do not possess a writable correlation model. Assuming that a generative statistical model, such as a Boltzmann machine, can be trained in an unsupervised manner on example signals, we demonstrate how this signal model can be used within a Bayesian framework of signal reconstruction. By deriving a message-passing inference for general distribution restricted Boltzmann machines, we are able to integrate these inferred signal models into approximate message passing for compress…
The problem of recovering signals of high complexity from low quality sensing devices is analyzed via a combination of tools from signal processing and harmonic analysis. By using the rich structure offered by the recent development in fusion frames, we introduce a compressed sensing framework in which we split the dense information into sub-channel or local pieces and then fuse the local estimations. Each piece of information is measured by potentially low quality sensors, modeled by linear matrices and recovered via compressed sensing -- when necessary. Finally, by a fusion process within th…
In this paper we consider memoryless one-bit compressed sensing with randomly subsampled Gaussian circulant matrices. We show that in a small sparsity regime and for small enough accuracy $δ$, $m\sim δ^{-4} s\log(N/sδ)$ measurements suffice to reconstruct the direction of any $s$-sparse vector up to accuracy $δ$ via an efficient program. We derive this result by proving that partial Gaussian circulant matrices satisfy an $\ell_1/\ell_2$ RIP-property. Under a slightly worse dependence on $δ$, we establish stability with respect to approximate sparsity, as well as full vector recovery results.
On-Off Random Access Channels: A Compressed Sensing Framework
本文考虑一个简单的开关随机多址信道,其中n个用户在m个自由度上同时与一个接收机通信。每个用户以概率lambda发送,其中通常lambda n < m << n,并且接收器必须检测哪些用户发送。我们表明,当码本具有i.i.d.
This paper introduces a Compressed Sensing (CS) estimation scheme for Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) channels with sparse multipath. The OTFS waveform represents signals in a two dimensional Delay-Doppler (DD) orthonormal basis. The proposed model does not require the assumption that the delays are integer multiples of the sampling period. The analysis shows that non-integer delay and Doppler shifts in the channel cannot be accurately modelled by integer approximations. An Orthogonal Matching Pursuit with Binary-division Refinement (OMPBR) estimation algorithm is proposed. The proposed…
Recently, many new challenges in Compressed Sensing (CS), such as block sparsity, arose. In this paper, we present a new algorithm for solving CS with block sparse constraints (BSC) in complex fields. Firstly, based on block sparsity characteristics, we propose a new model to deal with CS with BSC and analyze the properties of the functions involved in this model. We then present a new $τ$-stationary point and analyze corresponding first-order sufficient and necessary conditions. That ensures we to further develop a block Newton hard-thresholding pursuit (BNHTP) algorithm for efficiently solvi…
