The paper is devoted to local derivations on the algebra $S(\mathcal{M},τ)$ of $τ$-measurable operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ and a faithful normal semi-finite trace $τ.$ We prove that every local derivation on $S(\mathcal{M},τ)$ which is continuous in the measure topology, is in fact a derivation. In the particular case of type I von Neumann algebras they all are inner derivations. It is proved that for type I finite von Neumann algebras without an abelian direct summand, and also for von Neumann algebras with the atomic lattice of projections, the condition of continuity of the local derivation is redundant. Finally we give necessary and sufficient conditions on a commutative von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ for the existence of local derivations which are not derivations on algebras of measurable operators affiliated with $\mathcal{M}.$
We prove that every Lie derivation on a solid $\star-$subalgebras of locally measurable operators it is equal to a sum of the associative derivation and the center-valued trace.
Let $S(0,1)$ be the $*$-algebra of all classes of Lebesgue measurable functions on the unit interval $(0,1)$ and let $(\mathcal{A},\left\|\cdot \right\|_\mathcal{A})$ be a complete symmetric $Δ$-normed $*$-subalgebra of $S(0,1)$, in which simple functions are dense, e.g., $L_\infty (0,1)$, $L_{\log}(0,1)$, $S(0,1)$ and the Arens algebra $L^ω(0,1)$ equipped with their natural $Δ$-norms. We show that there exists no non-trivial derivation $ δ: \mathcal{A} \to S(0,1)$ commuting with all dyadic translations of the unit interval. Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a type $II$ (or $I_\infty$) von Neumann algebra,…
This paper is devoted to local derivations on subalgebras on the algebra $S(M, τ)$ of all $τ$-measurable operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra $M$ without abelian summands and with a faithful normal semi-finite trace $τ.$ We prove that if $\mathcal{A}$ is a solid $\ast$-subalgebra in $S(M, τ)$ such that $p\in \mathcal{A}$ for all projection $p\in M$ with finite trace, then every local derivation on the algebra $\mathcal{A}$ is a derivation. This result is new even in the case standard subalgebras on the algebra $B(H)$ of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space $H.$ We also ap…
We prove that a von Neumann algebra $M$ is abelian if and only if the square of every derivation on the algebra $S(M)$ of measurable operators, affiliated with $M$, is a local derivation. We also show that for general associative unital algebras this is not true.
Let \(\mathcal{A}\) be a unital Banach algebra such that any Jordan derivation from \(\mathcal{A}\) into any \(\mathcal{A}\)-bimodule \(\mathcal{M}\) is a derivation. We prove that any 2-local derivation from the algebra $M_n(\mathcal{A})$ into $M_n(\mathcal{M})$ $(n\geq 3)$ is a derivation. We apply this result to show that any 2-local derivation on the algebra of locally measurable operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra without direct abelian summands is a derivation.
The present paper presents a survey of some recent results devoted to derivations, local derivations and 2-local derivations on various algebras of measurable operators affiliated with von Neumann algebras. We give a complete description of derivation on these algebras, except the case where the von Neumann algebra is of type II$_1$. In the latter case the result is obtained under an extra condition of measure continuity of derivations. Local and 2-local derivations on the above algebras are also considered. We give sufficient conditions on a von Neumann algebra $M$, under which every local or…
We prove that if $\mathcal M$ is a properly infinite von Neumann algebra and $LS(\mathcal M)$ is the local measurable operator algebra affiliated with $\mathcal M$, then every Jordan derivation from $LS(\mathcal M)$ into itself is continuous with respect to the local measure topology $t(\mathcal M)$. We construct an extension of a Jordan derivation from $\mathcal M$ into $LS(\mathcal M)$ up to a Jordan derivation from $LS(\mathcal M)$ into itself. Moreover, we prove that if $\mathcal M$ is a properly von Neumann algebra and $\mathcal A$ is a subalgebra of $LS(\mathcal M)$ such that $\mathcal M…
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a unital associative algebra and $\mathcal{M}$ be an $\mathcal{A}$-bimodule. A linear mapping $φ$ from $\mathcal{A}$ into an $\mathcal{A}$-bimodule $\mathcal{M}$ is called a Lie derivation if $φ[A,B]=[φ(A),B]+[A,φ(B)]$ for each $A,B$ in $\mathcal{A}$, and $φ$ is called a \emph{local Lie derivation} if for every $A$ in $\mathcal{A}$, there exists a Lie derivation $φ_{A}$ (depending on $A$) from $\mathcal{A}$ into $\mathcal{M}$ such that $φ(A)=φ_{A}(A)$. In this paper, we prove that every local Lie derivation on von Neumann algebras is a Lie derivation; and we show that if $…
We prove that every weak-local derivation on a C$^*$-algebra is continuous, and the same conclusion remains valid for weak$^*$-local derivations on von Neumann algebras. We further show that weak-local derivations on C$^*$-algebras and weak$^*$-local derivations on von Neumann algebras are derivations. We also study the connections between bilocal derivations and bilocal $^*$-automorphism with our notions of extreme-strong-local derivations and automorphisms.
Let $L$ be a locally compact Hausdorff space. Suppose $A$ is a C$^*$-algebra with the property that every weak-2-local derivation on $A$ is a {\rm(}linear{\rm)} derivation. We prove that every weak-2-local derivation on $C_0(L,A)$ is a {\rm(}linear{\rm)} derivation. Among the consequences we establish that if $B$ is an atomic von Neumann algebra or on a compact C$^*$-algebra, then every weak-2-local derivation on $C_0(L,B)$ is a linear derivation. We further show that, for a general von Neumann algebra $M$, every 2-local derivation on $C_0(L,M)$ is a linear derivation. We also prove several re…
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a semifinite von Neumann algebra on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ equipped with a faithful normal semifinite trace $τ$, $S(\mathcal{M},τ)$ be the ${}^*$-algebra of all $τ$-measurable operators. Let $S_0(\mathcal{M},τ)$ be the ${}^*$-algebra of all $τ$-compact operators and $T(\mathcal{M},τ)=S_0(\mathcal{M},τ)+\mathbb{C}I$ be the ${}^*$-algebra of all operators $X=A+λI$ with $A\in S_0(\mathcal{M},τ)$ and $λ\in \mathbb{C}$. We prove that every operator of $T(\mathcal{M},τ)$ that is left-invertible in $T(\mathcal{M},τ)$ is in fact invertible in $T(\mathcal{M},τ)$. It is a gen…
Let A be a C*-algebra and d from A into A** be a continuous linear map. We assume that d acts like derivation or anti-derivation at orthogonal elements for several types of orthogonality conditions such as ab=0, ab*=0, ab=ba=0 and ab*=b*a=0. In each case, we characterize the structure of d. Then we apply our results for von Neumann algebras and unital simple C*-algebras.
We prove that each local Lie $n$-derivation is a Lie $n$-derivation under mild assumptions on the unital algebras with a nontrivial idempotent. As applications, we obtain descriptions of local Lie $n$-derivations on generalized matrix algebras, triangular algebras, nest algebras, von Neumann algebras, and the algebras of locally measurable operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra.
We extend the Fuglede-Putnam theorem from the algebra $B(H)$ of all bounded operators on the Hilbert space $H$ to the algebra of all locally measurable operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra.
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a type II$_1$ von Neumann factor and let $S(\mathcal{M})$ be the associated Murray-von Neumann algebra of all measurable operators affiliated to $\mathcal{M}.$ We extend a result of Kadison and Liu \cite{KL} by showing that any derivation from $S(\mathcal{M})$ into an $\mathcal{M}$-bimodule $\mathcal{B}\subsetneq S(\mathcal{M})$ is trivial. In the special case, when $\mathcal{M}$ is the hyperfinite type II$_1-$factor $\mathcal{R}$, we introduce the algebra $AD(\mathcal{R})$, a noncommutative analogue of the algebra of all almost everywhere approximately differentiable func…
The paper is devoted to 2-local derivations on matrix algebras over unital semi-prime Banach algebras. For a unital semi-prime Banach algebra $\mathcal{A}$ with the inner derivation property we prove that any 2-local derivation on the algebra $M_{2^n}(\mathcal{A}),$ $n\geq 2,$ is a derivation. We apply this result to $AW^\ast$-algebras and show that any 2-local derivation on an arbitrary $AW^\ast$-algebra is a derivation.
We prove that every 2-local derivation from the algebra $M_n(\mathcal{A})(n>2)$ into its bimodule $M_n(\mathcal{M})$ is a derivation, where $\mathcal{A}$ is a unital Banach algebra and $\mathcal{M}$ is a unital $\mathcal{A}$-bimodule such that each Jordan derivation from $\mathcal{A}$ into $\mathcal{M}$ is an inner derivation, and that every 2-local derivation on a C*-algebra with a faithful traceable representation is a derivation. We also characterize local and 2-local Lie derivations on some algebras such as von Neumann algebras, nest algebras, Jiang-Su algebra and UHF algebras.
We prove new results on generalized derivations on C$^*$-algebras. By considering the triple product $\{a,b,c\} =2^{-1} (a b^* c + c b^* a)$, we introduce the study of linear maps which are triple derivations or triple homomorphisms at a point. We prove that a continuous linear $T$ map on a unital C$^*$-algebra is a generalized derivation whenever it is a triple derivation at the unit element. If we additionally assume $T(1)=0,$ then $T$ is a $^*$-derivation and a triple derivation. Furthermore, a continuous linear map on a unital C$^*$-algebra which is a triple derivation at the unit element …
A linear mapping $ϕ$ from an algebra $\mathcal{A}$ into its bimodule $\mathcal M$ is called a centralizable mapping at $G\in\mathcal{A}$ if $ϕ(AB)=ϕ(A)B=Aϕ(B)$ for each $A$ and $B$ in $\mathcal{A}$ with $AB=G$. In this paper, we prove that if $\mathcal M$ is a von Neumann algebra without direct summands of type $\mathrm{I}_1$ and type $\mathrm{II}$, $\mathcal A$ is a $*$-subalgebra with $\mathcal M\subseteq\mathcal A\subseteq LS(\mathcal{M})$ and $G$ is a fixed element in $\mathcal A$, then every continuous (with respect to the local measure topology $t(\mathcal M)$) centralizable mapping at $…
In this paper we study decompositions and classification problems for unbounded derivations in Bunce-Deddens-Toeplitz and Bunce-Deddens algebras. We also look at implementations of these derivations on associated GNS Hilbert spaces.
We characterize derivations and 2-local derivations from $M_{n}(\mathcal{A})$ into $M_{n}(\mathcal{M})$, $n \ge 2$, where $\mathcal{A}$ is a unital algebra over $\mathbb{C}$ and $\mathcal{M}$ is a unital $\mathcal{A}$-bimodule. We show that every derivation $D: M_{n}(\mathcal{A}) \to M_{n}(\mathcal{M})$, $n \ge 2,$ is the sum of an inner derivation and a derivation induced by a derivation from $\mathcal{A}$ to $\mathcal{M}$. We say that $\mathcal{A}$ commutes with $\mathcal{M}$ if $am=ma$ for every $a\in\mathcal{A}$ and $m\in\mathcal{M}$. If $\mathcal{A}$ commutes with $\mathcal{M}$ we prove t…
In this paper we investigate in details derivations on trivial extension algebras. We obtain generalizations of both known results on derivations on triangular matrix algebras and a known result on first cohomology group of trivial extension algebras. As a consequence we get the characterization of trivial extension algebras on which every derivation is inner. We show that, under some conditions, a trivial extension algebra on which every derivation is inner has necessarily a triangular matrix representation. The paper starts with detailed study (with examples) of the relation between the triv…
In this paper we provide some conditions under which a Lie derivation on a trivial extension algebra is proper, that is, it can be decomposed into the sum of a derivation and a center valued map. We extend some known results on the properness of Lie derivations of triangular algebras. Some illuminating examples are also included.
