Given a von Neumann algebra $M$ we introduce so called central extension $mix(M)$ of $M$. We show that
$mix(M)$ is a *-subalgebra in the algebra $LS(M)$ of all locally measurable operators with respect to $M,$ and this algebra coincides with $LS(M)$ if and only if $M $ does not admit type II direct summands. We prove that if $M$ is a properly infinite von Neumann algebra then every additive derivation on the algebra $mix(M)$ is inner. This implies that on the algebra $LS(M)$, where $M$ is a type I$_\infty$ or a type III von Neumann algebra, all additive derivations are inner derivations.
Let $M$ be a type I von Neumann algebra with the center $Z,$ and let $LS(M)$ be the algebra of all locally measurable operators affiliated with $M.$ We prove that every $Z$-linear derivation on $LS(M)$ is inner. In particular all $Z$-linear derivations on the algebras of measurable and respectively totally measurable operators are spatial and implemented by elements from $LS(M).$
This paper is concerned with derivations in algebras of (unbounded) operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$. Let $\mathcal{% A}$ be one of the algebras of measurable operators, locally measurable operators or, $τ$-measurable operators. We present a complete description of von Neumann algebras $\mathcal{M}$ of type $I$ in terms of their central projections such that every derivation in $\mathcal{A}$ is inner. It is also shown that every derivation in the algebra $LS(\mathcal{M})$ of all locally measurable operators with respect to a properly infinite von Neumann algebra $\…
In the present paper derivations and *-automorphisms of algebras of unbounded operators over the ring of measurable functions are investigated and it is shown that all L^0-linear derivations and L^{0}-linear *-automorphisms are inner. Moreover, it is proved that each L^0-linear automorphism of the algebra of all linear operators on a bo-dense submodule of a Kaplansky-Hilbert module over the ring of measurable functions is spatial.
Given a type I von Neumann algebra $M$ with a faithful normal semi-finite trace $τ,$ let $L(M, τ)$ be the algebra of all $τ$-measurable operators affiliated with $M.$ We give a complete description of all derivations on the algebra $L(M, τ).$ In particular, we prove that if $M$ is of type I$_\infty$ then every derivation on $L(M, τ)$ is inner.
Given a von Neumann algebra $M$ with a faithful normal semi-finite trace $τ,$ let $L(M, τ)$ be the algebra of all $τ$-measurable operators affiliated with $M.$ We prove that if $A$ is a locally convex reflexive complete metrizable solid $\ast$-subalgebra in $L(M, τ),$ which can be embedded into a locally bounded weak Fréchet $M$-bimodule, then any derivation on $A$ is inner.
The paper is devoted to local derivations on the algebra $S(\mathcal{M},τ)$ of $τ$-measurable operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ and a faithful normal semi-finite trace $τ.$ We prove that every local derivation on $S(\mathcal{M},τ)$ which is continuous in the measure topology, is in fact a derivation. In the particular case of type I von Neumann algebras they all are inner derivations. It is proved that for type I finite von Neumann algebras without an abelian direct summand, and also for von Neumann algebras with the atomic lattice of projections, the condition of c…
Given a von Neumann algebra $M$ denote by $S(M)$ and $LS(M)$ respectively the algebras of all measurable and locally measurable operators affiliated with $M.$ For a faithful normal semi-finite trace $τ$ on $M$ let $S(M, τ)$ (resp. $S_0(M, τ)$) be the algebra of all $τ$-measurable (resp. $τ$-compact) operators from $S(M).$ We give a complete description of all derivations on the above algebras of operators in the case of type I von Neumann algebra $M.$ In particular, we prove that if $M$ is of type I$_\infty$ then every derivation on $LS(M)$ (resp. $S(M)$ and $S(M,τ)$) is inner, and each deriva…
We prove that every Lie derivation on a solid $\star-$subalgebras of locally measurable operators it is equal to a sum of the associative derivation and the center-valued trace.
Let $S(0,1)$ be the $*$-algebra of all classes of Lebesgue measurable functions on the unit interval $(0,1)$ and let $(\mathcal{A},\left\|\cdot \right\|_\mathcal{A})$ be a complete symmetric $Δ$-normed $*$-subalgebra of $S(0,1)$, in which simple functions are dense, e.g., $L_\infty (0,1)$, $L_{\log}(0,1)$, $S(0,1)$ and the Arens algebra $L^ω(0,1)$ equipped with their natural $Δ$-norms. We show that there exists no non-trivial derivation $ δ: \mathcal{A} \to S(0,1)$ commuting with all dyadic translations of the unit interval. Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a type $II$ (or $I_\infty$) von Neumann algebra,…
We prove a Jordan version of Dorofeev's boundedness theorem for completely additive measues and use it to show that every (not necessarily linear nor continuous) 2-local triple derivation on a continuous JBW*-triple is a triple derivation.
This paper is devoted to local derivations on subalgebras on the algebra $S(M, τ)$ of all $τ$-measurable operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra $M$ without abelian summands and with a faithful normal semi-finite trace $τ.$ We prove that if $\mathcal{A}$ is a solid $\ast$-subalgebra in $S(M, τ)$ such that $p\in \mathcal{A}$ for all projection $p\in M$ with finite trace, then every local derivation on the algebra $\mathcal{A}$ is a derivation. This result is new even in the case standard subalgebras on the algebra $B(H)$ of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space $H.$ We also ap…
The paper is devoted to 2-local derivations on the algebra $LS(M)$ of all locally measurable operators affiliated with a type I$_\infty$ von Neumann algebra $M.$ We prove that every 2-local derivation on $LS(M)$ is a derivation.
We prove that a von Neumann algebra $M$ is abelian if and only if the square of every derivation on the algebra $S(M)$ of measurable operators, affiliated with $M$, is a local derivation. We also show that for general associative unital algebras this is not true.
Let \(\mathcal{A}\) be a unital Banach algebra such that any Jordan derivation from \(\mathcal{A}\) into any \(\mathcal{A}\)-bimodule \(\mathcal{M}\) is a derivation. We prove that any 2-local derivation from the algebra $M_n(\mathcal{A})$ into $M_n(\mathcal{M})$ $(n\geq 3)$ is a derivation. We apply this result to show that any 2-local derivation on the algebra of locally measurable operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra without direct abelian summands is a derivation.
We prove that every derivation acting on a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ with values in a quasi-normed bimodule of locally measurable operators affiliated with $\mathcal{M}$ is necessarily inner.
It is established that every derivation continuous with respect to the local measure topology acting on the *-algebra $LS(\mathcal{M})$ of all locally measurable operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ is necessary inner. If $\mathcal{M}$ is a properly infinite von Neumann algebra, then every derivation on $LS(\mathcal{M})$ is inner. In addition, it is proved that any derivation on $\mathcal{M}$ with values in Banach $\mathcal{M}$-bimodule of locally measurable operators is inner.
We prove that any derivation of the *-algebra $LS(\mathcal{M})$ of all locally measurable operators affiliated with a properly infinite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ is continuous with respect to the local measure topology $t(\mathcal{M})$. Building an extension of a derivation $δ:\mathcal{M}\longrightarrow LS(\mathcal{M})$ up to a derivation from $LS(\mathcal{M})$ into $LS(\mathcal{M})$, it is further established that any derivation from $\mathcal{M}$ into $LS(\mathcal{M})$ is $t(\mathcal{M})$-continuous.
This paper is devoted to derivations on the algebra $S(M)$ of all measurable operators affiliated with a finite von Neumann algebra $M.$ We prove that if $M$ is a finite von Neumann algebra with a faithful normal semi-finite trace $τ$, equipped with the locally measure topology $t,$ then every $t$-continuous derivation $D:S(M)\rightarrow S(M)$ is inner. A similar result is valid for derivation on the algebra $S(M,τ)$ of $τ$-measurable operators equipped with the measure topology $t_τ$.
The additive (generalized) $ξ$-Lie derivations on prime algebras are characterized. It is shown, under some suitable assumption, that an additive map $L$ is an additive (generalized) Lie derivation if and only if it is the sum of an additive (generalized) derivation and an additive map from the algebra into its center vanishing all commutators; is an additive (generalized) $ξ$-Lie derivation with $ξ\not=1$ if and only if it is an additive (generalized) derivation satisfying $L(ξA)=ξL(A)$ for all $A$. These results are then used to characterize additive (generalized) $ξ$-Lie derivations on seve…
The present paper presents a survey of some recent results devoted to derivations, local derivations and 2-local derivations on various algebras of measurable operators affiliated with von Neumann algebras. We give a complete description of derivation on these algebras, except the case where the von Neumann algebra is of type II$_1$. In the latter case the result is obtained under an extra condition of measure continuity of derivations. Local and 2-local derivations on the above algebras are also considered. We give sufficient conditions on a von Neumann algebra $M$, under which every local or…
We prove that if $\mathcal M$ is a properly infinite von Neumann algebra and $LS(\mathcal M)$ is the local measurable operator algebra affiliated with $\mathcal M$, then every Jordan derivation from $LS(\mathcal M)$ into itself is continuous with respect to the local measure topology $t(\mathcal M)$. We construct an extension of a Jordan derivation from $\mathcal M$ into $LS(\mathcal M)$ up to a Jordan derivation from $LS(\mathcal M)$ into itself. Moreover, we prove that if $\mathcal M$ is a properly von Neumann algebra and $\mathcal A$ is a subalgebra of $LS(\mathcal M)$ such that $\mathcal M…
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a unital associative algebra and $\mathcal{M}$ be an $\mathcal{A}$-bimodule. A linear mapping $φ$ from $\mathcal{A}$ into an $\mathcal{A}$-bimodule $\mathcal{M}$ is called a Lie derivation if $φ[A,B]=[φ(A),B]+[A,φ(B)]$ for each $A,B$ in $\mathcal{A}$, and $φ$ is called a \emph{local Lie derivation} if for every $A$ in $\mathcal{A}$, there exists a Lie derivation $φ_{A}$ (depending on $A$) from $\mathcal{A}$ into $\mathcal{M}$ such that $φ(A)=φ_{A}(A)$. In this paper, we prove that every local Lie derivation on von Neumann algebras is a Lie derivation; and we show that if $…
In this paper we study derivations in subalgebras of $L_{0}^{wo}(ν;% \mathcal{L}(X)) $, the algebra of all weak operator measurable funtions $f:S\to \mathcal{L}(X) $, where $% \mathcal{L}(X) $ is the Banach algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Banach space $X$. It is shown, in particular, that all derivations on $L_{0}^{wo}(ν;\mathcal{L}(X)) $ are inner whenever $X$ is separable and infinite dimensional. This contrasts strongly with the fact that $L_{0}^{wo}(ν;\mathcal{L}(X)) $ admits non-trivial non-inner derivations whenever $X$ is finite dimensional and the measure $ν$ is non-atomic…
Given a von Neumann algebra $M$ with a faithful normal finite trace $τ$ denote by $L^Λ(M, τ)$ the generalized Arens algebra with respect to $M.$ We give a complete description of all additive derivations on the algebra $L^Λ(M, τ).$ In particular each additive derivation on the algebra $L^Λ(M, τ),$ where $M$ is a type II von Neumann algebra, is inner.
The paper is devoted to 2-local derivations on matrix algebras over commutative regular algebras. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on a commutative regular algebra to admit 2-local derivations which are not derivations. We prove that every 2-local derivation on a matrix algebra over a commutative regular algebra is a derivation. We apply these results to 2-local derivations on algebras of measurable and locally measurable operators affiliated with type I von Neumann algebras.
We investigate states on von Neumann algebras which are not normal but enjoy various forms of infinite additivity, and show that these exist on $B(H)$ if and only if the cardinality of an orthonormal basis of $H$ satisfies various large cardinal conditions. For instance, there is a singular countably additive pure state on $B(l^2(κ))$ if and only if $κ$ is Ulam measurable, and there is a singular ${<}\,κ$-additive pure state on $B(l^2(κ))$ if and only if $κ$ is measurable. The proofs make use of Farah and Weaver's theory of quantum filters. Applications to Ueda's peak set theorem for von Neuma…
We prove that if M is a von Neumann algebra whose abelian summand is discrete, then every local derivation on the algebra of all measurable operators affilated with M is a derivation. This answers a question of Richard Kadison.
Let ${\mathcal M}$ be a von Neumann algebra without central summands of type $I_1$ and $ξ\in{\mathbb C}$ a scalar. It is shown that an additive map $L$ on $\mathcal M$ satisfies $L(AB-ξBA)=L(A)B-ξBL(A)+L(B)A-ξAL(B)$ whenever $A,B\in{\mathcal M}$ with $AB=0$ if and only if one of the following statements holds: (1) $ξ=1$, $L=φ+f$, where $φ$ is an additive derivation on $\mathcal M$ and $f$ is an additive map from $\mathcal M$ into its center vanishing on $[A,B]$ with $AB=0$; (2) $ξ=0$, $L(I)\in{\mathcal Z}({\mathcal M})$ and there exists an additive derivation $φ$ such that $L(A)=φ(A)+L(I)A$ fo…
We prove that each local Lie $n$-derivation is a Lie $n$-derivation under mild assumptions on the unital algebras with a nontrivial idempotent. As applications, we obtain descriptions of local Lie $n$-derivations on generalized matrix algebras, triangular algebras, nest algebras, von Neumann algebras, and the algebras of locally measurable operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra.
The notion of uniform equicontinuity in measure at zero for sequences of additive maps from a normed space into the space of measurable operators associated with a semifinite von Neumann algebra is discussed. It is shown that uniform equicontinuity in measure at zero on a dense subset implies the uniform equicontinuity on the entire space, which is then applied to derive some non-commutative ergodic theorems
Let $M$ be a type I von Neumann algebra with the center $Z,$ a faithful normal semi-finite trace $τ.$ Let $L(M, τ)$ be the algebra of all $τ$-measurable operators affiliated with $M$ and let $S_0(M, τ)$ be the subalgebra in $L(M, τ)$ consisting of all operators $x$ such that given any $ε>0$ there is a projection $p\in\mathcal{P}(M)$ with $τ(p^{\perp})<\infty, xp\in M$ and $\|xp\|<ε.$ We prove that any $Z$-linear derivation of $S_0(M, τ)$ is spatial and generated by an element from $L(M, τ).$
In the present paper we prove that every additive (not necessarily homogenous) local inner derivation on the algebra of matrices over an arbitrary field is an inner derivation, and every local inner derivation on the ring of matrices over a finite ring generated by the identity element or the ring of integers is an inner derivation. We also prove that every additive local inner derivation on the Jordan algebra of symmetric matrices over an arbitrary field is a derivation, and every local inner derivation on the Jordan ring of symmetric matrices over a finite ring generated by the identity elem…
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a type II$_1$ von Neumann factor and let $S(\mathcal{M})$ be the associated Murray-von Neumann algebra of all measurable operators affiliated to $\mathcal{M}.$ We extend a result of Kadison and Liu \cite{KL} by showing that any derivation from $S(\mathcal{M})$ into an $\mathcal{M}$-bimodule $\mathcal{B}\subsetneq S(\mathcal{M})$ is trivial. In the special case, when $\mathcal{M}$ is the hyperfinite type II$_1-$factor $\mathcal{R}$, we introduce the algebra $AD(\mathcal{R})$, a noncommutative analogue of the algebra of all almost everywhere approximately differentiable func…
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a factor von Neumann algebra and $ϕ$ be the $\ast$-Jordan derivation on $A$, that is, for every $A,B \in \mathcal{A}$, $ϕ(A\diamond_{1} B) = ϕ(A)\diamond_{1} B + A\diamond_{1}ϕ( B)$ where $A\diamond_{1} B = AB + BA^{\ast}$, then $ϕ$ is additive $\ast$-derivation.
This paper is devoted to derivations on the algebra $S_0(M, τ)$ of all $τ$-compact operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra $M$ and a faithful normal semi-finite trace $τ.$ The main result asserts that every $t_τ$-continuous derivation $D:S_0(M, τ)\rightarrow S_0(M, τ)$ is spatial and implemented by a $τ$-measurable operator affiliated with $M$, where $t_τ$ denotes the measure topology on $S_0(M, τ)$. We also show the automatic $t_τ$-continuity of all derivations on $S_0(M, τ)$ for properly infinite von Neumann algebras $M$. Thus in the properly infinite case the condition of $t_τ$-cont…
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a prime $\ast$-algebra and $Φ$ preserves triple $\ast$-Jordan derivation on $\mathcal{A}$, that is, for every $A,B \in \mathcal{A}$, $$Φ(A\diamond B \diamond C)=Φ(A)\diamond B\diamond C+A\diamond Φ(B)\diamond C+A\diamond B\diamond Φ(C)$$ where $A\diamond B = AB + BA^{\ast}$ then $Φ$ is additive. Moreover, if $Φ(αI)$ is self-adjoint for $α\in\{1,i\}$ then $Φ$ is a $\ast$-derivation.
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a prime $\ast$-algebra. In this paper, we suppose that $Φ:\mathcal{A}\to\mathcal{A}$ satisfies $$Φ(A\diamond B)=Φ(A)\diamond B+A\diamondΦ(B)$$ where $A\diamond B = A^{*}B - B^{*}A$ for all $A,B\in\mathcal{A}$ .We will show that if $Φ(α\frac{I}{2})$ is self-adjoint for $α\in\{1,i\}$ then $Φ$ is additive $\ast$-derivation.
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a commutative $AW^*$-algebra, let $S(\mathcal{A})$ be the *-algebra of all measurable operators affiliated with $\mathcal{A}$, let $\mathcal{I}$ be an ideal in $\mathcal{A}$, let $s(\mathcal{I})$ be the support of the ideal $\mathcal{I}$ and let $\mathbb{Y}$ be a solid subspace in $S(\mathcal{A})$. The necessary and sufficient conditions of existence of non-zero band preserving derivations from $\mathcal{I}$ to $\mathbb{Y}$ are given. We show that, in case when $\mathbb{Y}\subset\mathcal{A}$, or $\mathbb{Y}$ is a quasi-normed solid space, any band preserving derivation fro…
Let $\mathcal R$ be a ring, $\mathcal{M}$ be a $\mathcal R$-bimodule and $m,n$ be two fixed nonnegative integers with $m+n\neq0$. An additive mapping $δ$ from $\mathcal R$ into $\mathcal{M}$ is called an \emph{$(m,n)$-Jordan derivation} if $(m+n)δ(A^{2})=2mAδ(A)+2nδ(A)A$ for every $A$ in $\mathcal R$. In this paper, we prove that every $(m,n)$-Jordan derivation from a $C^{*}$-algebra into its Banach bimodule is zero. An additive mapping $δ$ from $\mathcal R$ into $\mathcal{M}$ is called a $(m,n)$-Jordan derivable mapping at $W$ in $\mathcal R$ if $(m+n)δ(AB+BA)=2mδ(A)B+2mδ(B)A+2nAδ(B)+2nBδ(A)$…
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a $*$-algebra and $\mathcal{M}$ be a $*$-$\mathcal A$-bimodule, we study the local properties of $*$-derivations and $*$-Jordan derivations from $\mathcal{A}$ into $\mathcal{M}$ under the following orthogonality conditions on elements in $\mathcal A$: $ab^*=0$, $ab^*+b^*a=0$ and $ab^*=b^*a=0$. We characterize the mappings on zero product determined algebras and zero Jordan product determined algebras. Moreover, we give some applications on $C^*$-algebras, group algebra, matrix algebras, algebras of locally measurable operators and von Neumann algebras.
Let $\mathcal {A}$ be a unital $\ast$-algebra. For $A, B\in\mathcal{A}$, define by $[A, B]_{*}=AB-BA^{\ast}$ and $A\bullet B=AB+BA^{\ast}$ the new products of $A$ and $B$. In this paper, under some mild conditions on $\mathcal {A}$, it is shown that a map $Φ:\mathcal {A}\rightarrow \mathcal {A}$ satisfies $Φ([A\bullet B, C]_{*})=[Φ(A)\bullet B, C]_{*}+[A\bullet Φ(B), C]_{*}+[A\bullet B, Φ(C)]_{*}$ for all $A, B,C\in\mathcal {A}$ if and only if $Φ$ is an additive $*-$derivation. In particular, we apply the above result to prime $\ast$-algebras, von Neumann algebras with no central summands of t…
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a $W^*$-algebra and let $LS(\mathcal{M})$ be the algebra of all locally measurable operators affiliated with $\mathcal{M}$. It is shown that for any self-adjoint element $a\in LS(\mathcal{M})$ there exists a self-adjoint element $c_{_{0}}$ from the center of $LS(\mathcal{M})$, such that for any $ε>0$ there exists a unitary element $ u_ε$ from $\mathcal{M}$, satisfying $|[a,u_ε]| \geq (1-ε)|a-c_{_{0}}|$. A corollary of this result is that for any derivation $δ$ on $\mathcal{M}$ with the range in a (not necessarily norm-closed) ideal $I\subseteq\mathcal{M}$, the derivation $…
Let $A$ be a ring and $σ: A \to A$ a ring endomorphism. A generalized skew (or $σ$-)derivation of $A$ is an additive map $d: A \to A$ for which there exists a map $δ:A \to A$ such that $d(xy)=δ(x)y+σ(x)d(y)$ for all $x,y \in A$. If $A$ is a prime $C^*$-algebra and $σ$ is surjective, we determine the structure of generalized $σ$-derivations of $A$ that belong to the cb-norm closure of elementary operators $\mathcal{E}\ell(A)$ on $A$; all such maps are of the form $d(x)=bx+axc$ for suitable elements $a,b,c$ of the multiplier algebra $M(A)$. As a consequence, if an epimorphism $σ: A \to A$ lies i…
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a complex Hilbert space, $\mathcal{B(H)}$ be the algebra of all bounded linear operators on $\mathcal{H}$ and $\mathcal{A} \subseteq \mathcal{B(H)}$ be a von Neumann algebra without central summands of type $I_1$. For arbitrary elements $A, B\in \mathcal{A}$, one can define their $\ast$-Jordan product in the sense of $A\diamond B = AB+BA^\ast$. Let $p_n(x_1,x_2,\cdots,x_n)$ be the polynomial defined by $n$ indeterminates $x_1, \cdots, x_n$ and their $\ast$-Jordan products. In this article, it is shown that a mapping $δ: \mathcal{A} \longrightarrow \mathcal{B(H)}$ satisfies…
