Using LDA+GTB (local density approximation+generalized tight-binding) hybrid scheme we investigate the band structure of the electron-doped high-$T_c$ material Sm$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$. Parameters of the minimal tight-binding model for this system (the so-called 3-band Emery model) were obtained within the NMTO ($N$-th order Muffin-Tin orbital) method. Doping evolution of the dispersion and Fermi surface in the presence of electronic correlations was investigated in two regimes of magnetic order: short-range (spin-liquid) and long-range (antiferromagnetic metal). Each regime is characterized by the specific topologies of the Fermi surfaces and we discuss their relation to recent experimental data.
To reconcile the two experimental findings on La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_4, namely, Fermi surface (FS) observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and sharp incommensurate magnetic peaks by neutron scattering, we propose a picture that a quasi-one-dimensional FS (q-1dFS) is realized in each CuO_{2} plane whose q-1d direction alternates along the c-axis.
The phase diagram of hole-doped copper oxides shows four different electronic phases existing at zero temperature. Familiar among these are the Mott insulator, high-transition-temperature superconductor and metallic phases. A fourth phase, ofunknown identity, occurs at light doping along the zero-temperature bound of the `pseudogap' regime. This regime is rich in peculiar electronic phenomena, prompting numerous proposals that it contains some form of hidden electronic order. Here we present low-temperature electronic structure imaging studies of a lightly hole-doped copper oxide: Ca_{2-x}Na_{…
The electronic states near the Fermi level of recently discovered superconductor Ba$_2$CuO$_{4-δ}$ consist primarily of the Cu $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals. We investigate the electronic correlation effect and the orbital polarization of an effective two-orbital Hubbard model mimicking the low-energy physics of Ba$_2$CuO$_{4-δ}$ in the hole-rich regime by utilizing the dynamical mean-field theory with the Lanczos method as the impurity solver. We find that the hole-overdoped Ba$_2$CuO$_{4-δ}$ with $3d^8$ (Cu$^{3+}$) is in the orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP) at half-filling, an…
We performed Cu {\it K}-edge X-ray absorption fine structure measurements on T'-type La$_{1.8}$Eu$_{0.2}$CuO$_4$ (LECO) and Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ (NCO) to investigate the variation in the electronic state associated with the emergence of superconductivity due to annealing. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectra of as-sintered (AS) LECO are quite similar to those of AS NCO, indicating that the ground state of AS T'-type LECO is a Mott insulator. We found a significant variation of the electronic state at the Cu sites in LECO due to annealing. The electron density after annealing ($n_{\rm AN}$…
Bulk crystals of electron-doped cuprates with the T'-type structure require both Ce substitutions and reduction annealing for the emergence of superconductivity while the reduction annealing alone can induce superconductivity in thin films of the T'-type cuprates. In order to reveal low-energy electronic states which are responsible for the superconductivity, we have conducted angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on thin films of the superconducting Ce-free T'-type cuprate Pr$_2$CuO$_4$. The results indicate that the overall band structure and the Fermi surface area of the su…
We present results of magnetic neutron diffraction experiments on the co-doped super-oxygenated La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4+y) (LSCO+O) system with x=0.09. The spin-density wave has been studied and we find long-range incommensurate antiferromagnetic order below T_N coinciding with the superconducting ordering temperature T_c=40 K. The incommensurability value is consistent with a hole-doping of n_h~1/8, but in contrast to non-superoxygenated La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) with hole-doping close to n_h ~ 1/8 the magnetic order parameter is not field-dependent. We attribute this to the magnetic order being fully dev…
In order to realize superconductivity in cuprates with the T'-type structure, not only chemical substitution (Ce doping) but also post-growth reduction annealing is necessary. In the case of thin films, however, well-designed reduction annealing alone without Ce doping can induce superconductivity in the T'-type cuprates. In order to unveil the origin of superconductivity in the Ce-undoped T'-type cuprates, we have performed bulk-sensitive hard x-ray photoemission and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopies on superconducting and non-superconducting Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x=$ 0, 0.15, and 0.19…
An intact CuO$_2$ plane is widely believed to be a prerequisite for the high-$T_c$ superconductivity in cuprate superconductors. However, an exception may exist in the superconducting Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$ materials where CuO chains play a more important role. From first-principles density functional theory calculations, we have studied the electronic and magnetic structures of Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$. The stoichiometric Ba$_2$CuO$_3$ and Ba$_2$CuO$_4$ contain quasi-one-dimensional CuO chains and intact two-dimensional CuO$_2$ planes, respectively. In comparison with the nonmagnetic metal Ba$_2$CuO$_4$,…
The recently discovered cuprate superconductor Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$ exhibits a high $T_c\simeq73$K at $δ\simeq0.2$. The polycrystal grown under high pressure has a structure similar to La$_2$CuO$_4$, but with dramatically different lattice parameters due to the CuO$_6$ octahedron compression. The crystal field in the compressed Ba$_2$CuO$_4$ leads to an inverted Cu $3d$ $e_g$ complex with the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital sitting below the $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ and an electronic structure highly unusual compared to the conventional cuprates. We construct a two-orbital Hubbard model for the Cu $d^9$ state at hol…
The hole concentration dependence of the magnetic correlations is studied in very lightly-doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x<$0.02), which shows coexistence of a three-dimensional antiferromagnetic (AF) long-range ordered phase and a spin-glass phase at low temperatures. It is found that the spin-glass phase in the coexistence region also shows a diagonal spin modulation as in the pure spin-glass phase in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (0.02$\le x\le$0.055). Below $x\sim$0.02 the diagonal stripe structure is the same as that in $x\sim$0.02 with a volume fraction almost proportional to hole concentrati…
The pseudogap state is widely regarded as a precursor to high-temperature superconductivity yet remains poorly understood. Using high field (30 T) NMR, we report two electronically distinct oxygen sites within the copper-oxygen (Cu-O) planes of an underdoped cuprate in the pseudogap state. At temperatures well above the bulk superconducting transition, roughly 25% of the oxygen sites evidence superconducting pair formation, the remaining evidence antiferromagnetic ordering on the nearest neighbor Cu sites. Any superconducting fluctuations are slower than the microsecond timescales of the NMR p…
By in-situ change of polarization a small splitting of the Zhang-Rice singlet state band near the Fermi level has been resolved for optimum doped (x=0.4) Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ at the (pi,0)-point (R.Manzke et al. PRB 63, R100504 (2001). Here we treat the momentum dependence and lineshape of the split band by photoemission in the EDC-mode with very high angular and energy resolution. The splitting into two destinct emissions could also be observed over a large portion of the major symmetry line $Γ$M, giving the dispersion for the individual contributions. Since bi-layer effects …
We present a photoemission study of La$_{0.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4}$ with doping level $x$=1/8, where the charge carriers are expected to order forming static stripes. Though the local probes in direct space seem to be consistent with this idea, there has been little evidence found for such ordering in quasiparticle dispersions. We show that the Fermi surface topology of the 1/8 compound develops notable deviations from that observed for La$_{2- x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4}$ in a way consistent with the FS reconstruction expected for the scattering on the antiphase stripe order.
63Cu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spin-echo decay rate (T_2^{-1}) measurements are reported for the normal and superconducting states of a single crystal of Pr_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-y} (PCCO) in a magnetic field B_0=9T over the temperature range 2K<T<200K. The spin-echo decay rate is temperature-dependent for T<55K, and has a substantial dependence on the radio frequency (rf) pulse parameters below T~25K. This dependence indicates that T_2^{-1} is strongly effected by a local magnetic field distribution that can be modified by the rf pulses, including ones that are not at the nuclear Larmo…
To examine the so-called small pseudogap and the superconducting (SC) condensation energy U(0), the electronic specific heat Cel was measured on La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} up to ~120K. In samples with doping level p (=x) less than ~0.2, small pseudogap behavior appears in the γ(=Cel/T) vs. T curve around the mean-field critical temperature for a d-wave superconductor Tco (=2*Δ_{0}/(4~5)k_B), where Δ_{0} is the maximum gap at T<<Tc. The condensation energy U(0) is largely reduced in the pseudogap regime (p< ~0.2). The reduction of U(0) can be well reproduced by introducing an effective SC energy sca…
The structural and electronic properties of La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ were investigated as a function of Ba-concentration $0 \leq x \leq 1.2$, within the virtual crystal approximation (VCA) by means of first-principles total-energy calculations. We found Ba doping induces a quasi-rigid displacement of Cu d$_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ and d$_{z^{2}}$ bands toward higher energies. This effect generates important changes in the Fermi surface topology, which manage to imitate the ARPES momentum distribution map (MDM) measurements and tight-binding calculations recently reported for doped La-based cuprates. The …
The thermal conductivity κis measured in a series of La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (x = 0 - 0.22) single crystals down to 90 mK to elucidate the evolution of the residual electronic thermal conductivity κ_{res}, which probes the extended quasiparticle states in the d-wave gap. We found that κ_{res}/T grows smoothly, except for a 1/8 anomaly, above x = 0.05 and shows no discontinuity at optimum doping, indicating that the behavior of κ_{res}/T is not governed by the metal-insulator crossover in the normal state; as a result, κ_{res}/T is much larger than what the normal-state resistivity would suggest …
We report on semiclassical angle-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) and the Shubnikov-de Haas effect in the electron-overdoped cuprate superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$. Our data provide convincing evidence for magnetic breakdown in the system. This shows that a reconstructed multiply-connected Fermi surface persists, at least at strong magnetic fields, up to the highest doping level of the superconducting regime. Our results suggest an intimate relation between translational symmetry breaking and the superconducting pairing in the electron-doped cuprate superconductors.
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission and core-level x-ray photoemission studies of the single-layer cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi2201) and revealed the doping evolution of the electronic structure from the lightly-doped to optimally-doped regions. We have observed the formation of the dispersive quasi-particle band, evolution of the Fermi ``arc'' into the Fermi surface and the shift of the chemical potential with hole doping as in other cuprates. The doping evolution in Bi2201 is similar to that in Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_{x}$CuO$_{2}$Cl$_2$ (Na-CCOC), where a rapid chemical po…
We study electronic states of multilayer cuprates in the normal phases as functions of the number of CuO_2 planes and the doping rate. The resonating valence bond wave function and the Gutzwiller approximation are used for a two-dimensional multilayer t-t'-t''-J model. We calculate the electron-removal spectral functions at (π,0) in the CuO_2 plane next to the surface to understand the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) spectra. We find that the trilayer spectrum is narrower than the bilayer spectrum but is wider than the monolayer spectrum. In the tri- and tetralayer systems, t…
We report the electronic structure of monoclinic CuO as obtained from first principles calculations utilizing density functional theory plus effective Coulomb interaction (DFT + U) method. In contrast to standard DFT calculations taking into account electronic correlations in DFT + U gave antiferromagnetic insulator with energy gap and magnetic moment values in good agreement with experimental data. The electronic states around the Fermi level are formed by partially filled Cu 3$d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals with significant admixture of O 2$p$ states. Theoretical spectra are calculated using DFT + U …
We report electronic Raman scattering experiments on a superconducting ${\rm La_{1.88}Sr_{0.12}CuO_{4}}$ single crystal in a magnetic field. At low temperatures, the spectral weight of the high-energy two-magnon peak increases linearly with field and is amplified by a factor of more than two at 14 T. The effect disappears at elevated temperatures and is not present in undoped ${\rm La_{2}CuO_{4}}$. This observation is discussed in terms of an electronically inhomogeneous state in which the field enhances the volume fraction of a phase with local antiferromagnetic order at the expense of the su…
We observe apparent hole pockets in the Fermi surfaces of single-layer Bi-based cuprate superconductors from angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES). From detailed low-energy electron diffraction measurements and an analysis of the ARPES polarization-dependence, we show that these pockets are not intrinsic, but arise from multiple overlapping superstructure replicas of the main and shadow bands. We further demonstrate that the hole pockets reported recently from ARPES [Meng et al, Nature 462, 335 (2009)] have a similar structural origin, and are inconsistent with an intrinsic hole pocket associat…
The electron dynamics in the CuO chains has been elusive in Y-Ba-Cu-O cuprate systems by means of standard angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES); cleaved sample exhibits areas terminated by both CuO-chain or BaO layers, and the size of a typical beam results in ARPES signals that are superposed from both terminations. Here, we employ spatially-resolved ARPES with submicrometric beam (nano-ARPES) to reveal the surface-termination-dependent electronic structures of the double CuO chains in YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$. We present the first observation of sharp metallic dispersions and Fermi su…
The evolution of the electronic state through the reduction annealing has been investigated in electron-doped Pr_1.3-x_La_0.7_Ce_x_CuO_4+delta_ (x=0.10) single crystals with the so-called T' structure. From the ab plane and c axis electrical resistivity measurements in magnetic fields, it has been found that, through the reduction annealing, the strongly localized state of carriers accompanied by the antiferromagnetic (AF) pseudogap in the as-grown crystal changes to a metallic state bringing about the Kondo effect without AF pseudogap and to a superconducting state. These results are able to …
Slightly underdoped high-Tc system La(1.86)Sr(0.14)CuO(4) (LSCO) is studied by means of high energy high resolution angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and combined computational scheme LDA+DMFT+Sk. Corresponding one band Hubbard model is solved via dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), while model parameters needed are obtained from first principles within local density approximation (LDA). An "external" k-dependent self-energy Sk describes interaction of correlated electrons with antiferromagnetic (AFM) pseudogap fluctuations. Experimental and theoretical data clearly show "des…
We report a neutron and Raman scattering study of a single-crystal of La(2)CuO(4.05) prepared by high temperature electrochemical oxidation. Elastic neutron scattering measurements show the presence of two phases, corresponding to the two edges of the first miscibility gap, all the way up to 300 K. An additional oxygen redistribution, driven by electronic energies, is identified at 250 K in Raman scattering (RS) experiments by the simultaneous onset of two-phonon and two-magnon scattering, which are fingerprints of the insulating phase. Elastic neutron scattering measurements show directly an …
We have obtained mid-infrared optical absorption spectra of the S=1/2 quasi one-dimensional CuO using polarized transmission measurement and interpreted the spectra in terms of phonon assisted magnetic excitations. When the electric field is parallel to the main antiferromagnetic direction a Delta shaped peak is observed with the maximum at 0.23eV which is attributed to spinons along Cu-O chains. At low temperatures in the antiferromagnetic phase another peak appears at 0.16eV which is attributed to two-magnon absorption but the spinon peak remains. This behavior is interpreted as due to a dim…
The vortex core radius \rv, defined as the peak position of the supercurrent around the vortex, has been determined by muon spin rotation measurements in the mixed state of \lscox for $x=0.13$, 0.15, and 0.19. At lower doping (x=0.13 and 0.15), \rv(T) increases with decreasing temperature T, which is opposite to the behavior predicted by the conventional theory. Moreover, \rv(T\to0) is significantly larger than the Ginsburg-Landau coherence length determined by the upper critical field, and shows a clear tendency to decrease with increasing the doping x. These features can be qualitatively rep…
All previous cuprate superconductors display a set of common features: (i) vicinity to a Cu 3$d^{9}$ configuration; (ii) separated CuO$_2$ planes; (iii) superconductivity for doping $δ\sim$ 0.1$-$0.3. Recently [PNAS {\bf 24}, 12156 (2019)] challenged this picture by discovering "highly overdoped" superconducting Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+y}$. Using density-functional theory + dynamical mean-field theory, we reveal a bilayer structure of Ba$_2$CuO$_{3.2}$ of alternating quasi 2D and quasi 1D character. Correlations tune an inter-layer self-doping leading to an almost half-filled, strongly nested quasi 1D $…
Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy are utilized to study the atomic-scale structure and electronic properties of infinite-layer Sr0.94La0.06CuO2+y films prepared on SrRuO3-buffered SrTiO3(001) substrate by ozone-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Incommensurate structural supermodulation with a period of 24.5Å is identified on the CuO2-terminated surface, leading to characteristic stripes running along the 45o direction with respect to the Cu-O-Cu bonds. Spatially resolved tunneling spectra reveal substantial inhomogeneity on a nanometer length scale and emergence of in-gap states at…
Low energy Raman continuum and the redistribution of the continuum to a peak (2Δ-peak) in the superconducting state have been studied in Tl-Ba-(Ca)-Cu-O superconductors with single (Tl-2201) and double (Tl-2212) CuO_2 layer. The 2Δ/k_BT_c ratios in A_1g and B_1g symmetries are larger for Tl-2212 than for Tl-2201. The B_1g/A_1g gap ratio is also larger in Tl-2212. The A_1g intensities of the continuum and the 2Δ-peak are significantly weaker than the B_1g intensities in Tl-2201, but are comparable in Tl-2212. This shows that the Coulomb screening is much stronger in Tl-2201. The change from Tl-…
We report combined soft and hard x-ray scattering studies of the electronic and lattice modulations associated with stripe order in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ and La$_{1.48}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$. We find that the amplitude of both the electronic modulation of the hole density and the strain modulation of the lattice is significantly larger in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ than in La$_{1.48}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ and is also better correlated. The in-plane correlation lengths are isotropic in each case; for La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$, $ξ^{hole}=255\pm 5$ Å whereas for…
Two critical points have been revealed in the normal-state phase diagram of the electron-doped cuprate superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ by exploring the Fermi surface properties of high quality single crystals by high-field magnetotransport. First, the quantitative analysis of the Shubnikov-de Haas effect shows that the weak superlattice potential responsible for the Fermi surface reconstruction in the overdoped regime extrapolates to zero at the doping level $x_c = 0.175$ corresponding to the onset of superconductivity. Second, the high-field Hall coefficient exhibits a sharp drop right…
In high-temperature cuprate superconductors, the anti-ferromagnetic spin fluctuations are thought to have a very important role in naturally producing an attractive interaction between the electrons in the $d$-wave channel. The connection between superconductivity and spin fluctuations is expected to be especially consequential at the overdoped end point of the superconducting dome. In some materials, that point seems to coincide with a Lifshitz transition, where the Fermi surface changes from the hole-like centered at ($π, π$) to the electron-like, centered at the $Γ$ point causing a loss of …

We investigate the electronic and structural properties of CuO, which shows significant deviations from the trends obeyed by other transition-metal monoxides. Using an extended Hubbard corrective functional, we uncover an orbitally ordered insulating ground state for the cubic phase of this material, which was expected but never found before. This insulating state results from a fine balance between the tendency of Cu to complete its d-shell and Hund's rule magnetism. Starting from the ground state for the cubic phase, we also study tetragonal distortions of the unit cell (recently reported in…
We report on laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in the electron-doped cuprate Sm(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO(4-d). The data show the existence of a nodal hole-pocket Fermi-surface both in the normal and superconducting states. We prove that its origin is long-range antiferromagnetism by an analysis of the coherence factors in the main and folded bands. This coexistence of long-range antiferromagnetism and superconductivity implies that electron-doped cuprates are two-Fermi-surface superconductors. The measured superconducting gap in the nodal hole-pocket is compatible with a …
We have performed a systematic angle-resolved photoemission study of chemically substituted cuprates Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2-x}$Bi$_{x}$CuO$_{6+δ}$. We observed that the Fermi surface area shrinks linearly with Bi substitution content $x$, reflecting the electron doping nature of this chemical substitution. In addition, the spectral linewidth broadens rapidly with increasing $x$, and becomes completely incoherent at the superconducting-insulating boundary. The d-wave-like normal-state gap observed in the lightly underdoped region gradually evolves into a large soft gap, which suppresses antinodal spect…
First-principles calculations with the full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave (FP-LAPW) method have been performed to investigate detailed electronic and linear optical properties of Sr$_{2}$CuO$_{2}$Cl$_{2}$, which is a classical low-dimensional antiferromagnet (AFM) charge transfer ({\it CT}) insulator. Within the local-spin-density approximation (LSDA) plus the on-site Coulomb interaction $U$ (LADA+$U$) added on Cu 3d orbitals, our calculated band gap and spin moments are well consistent with the experimental and other theoretical values. The energy dispersion relation agrees well w…
The parent compounds of the high-temperature cuprate superconductors are Mott insulators. It has been generally agreed that understanding the physics of the doped Mott insulators is essential to understanding the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity. A natural starting point is to elucidate the basic electronic structure of the parent compound. Here we report comprehensive high resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on Ca$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$, a Mott insulator and a prototypical parent compound of the cuprates. Multiple underlying Fermi surface sheets are revealed for the …
Typical density-functional theory calculations that wrongly predict undoped cuprates to be metallic also predict Cu-O half- and full-breathing phonon energies that are significantly softer than observed, presumably because of weak on-site Coulomb repulsion on the Cu 3d orbitals. We used DFT+U calculations with antiferromagnetic supercells of La$_2$CuO$_4$ to establish correlation between the on-site repulsion strength, tuned via adjusting the value of U, and phonon dispersions. We find that breathing and half-breathing phonons reach experimental values when U is tuned to obtain the correct opt…
HgBa$_{2}$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201) has been shown to be a model cuprate for scattering, optical, and transport experiments, but angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data are still lacking owing to the absence of a charge-neutral cleavage plane. We report on progress in achieving the experimental conditions for which quasiparticles can be observed in the near-nodal region of the Fermi surface. The d-wave superconducting gap is measured and found to have a maximum of 39 meV. At low temperature, a kink is detected in the nodal dispersion at approximately 51 meV below the Fermi level, an …
The Seebeck coefficient $S$ of the cuprate superconductor La$ _{2-x} $Sr$_{x} $CuO$ _{4}$ (LSCO) was measured in magnetic fields large enough to access the normal state at low temperatures, for a range of Sr concentrations from $x = 0.07$ to $x = 0.15$. For $x = 0.11$, 0.12, 0.125 and 0.13, $S/T$ decreases upon cooling to become negative at low temperatures. The same behavior is observed in the Hall coefficient $R_{H}(T)$. In analogy with other hole-doped cuprates at similar hole concentrations $p$, the negative $S$ and $R_{H}$ show that the Fermi surface of LSCO undergoes a reconstruction cau…
We have used a scanning tunneling microscope to demonstrate that a single CuO_2 plane can form a stable and atomically ordered layer at the surface of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+delta}. In contrast to previous studies on high-T_c surfaces, the CuO_2-terminated surface exhibits a strongly suppressed tunneling conductance at low voltages. We consider a number of different explanations for this phenomena and propose that it may be caused by how the orbital symmetry of the CuO_2 plane's electronic states affects the tunneling process.
Recent more precise experiments have revealed both a slow and a fast quantum oscillation in the c-axis resistivity of nearly optimal to overdoped electron-doped high temperature superconductor $\mathrm{Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}}$. Here we study this problem from the perspective of Fermi surface reconstruction using an exact transfer matrix method and the Pichard-Landauer formula. In this method, neither quasiclassical approximations for magnetic breakdown, nor {\em ad ho}c broadening of Landau levels, are necessary to study the high field quantum oscillations. The underlying Hamiltonian is a mean …
In superconducting copper oxides some Cu-O bond-stretching phonons around 70meV show anomalous giant softening and broadening of electronic origin and electronic dispersions have large renormalization kinks near the same energy. These observations suggest that phonon broadening originates from quasiparticle excitations across the Fermi surface and the electronic dispersion kinks originate from coupling to anomalous phonons. We measured the phonon anomaly in underdoped (x=0.05) and overdoped (x=0.20,0.25) La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ by inelastic neutron and x-ray scattering with high resolution. Co…
Lightly-doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ in the so-called "insulating" spin-glass/diagonal-stripe phase has been studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A quasi-particle (QP) peak crossing the Fermi level has been observed in the node direction of the d-wave superconducting gap, forming an "arc" of Fermi surface consistent with the recently observed metallic transport behavior at high temperatures of lightly-doped materials. The spectral weight of the nodal QP smoothly increases with hole doping, corresponding to the $n \sim x$ behavior of the carrier number in the underdoped and li…
Doping and strain dependences of the electronic structure of the CuO6-octahedra layer within LDA+GTB method in the frameworks of six-band p-d model are calculated. Band structure and Fermi surface of the quasiparticle excitations in the effective Hubbard model are characterized by inhomogeneous distribution of the k-dependent spectral weight. Doping results in reconstruction of the band structure, redistribution of the spectral weight over dispersion surface and reconstruction of Fermi surface from small hole pockets in the underdoped region to large hole contour in the overdoped region throug…
We present angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy data probing the electronic structure of the Nd-substituted high-$T_c$ cuprate La$_{1.48}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ (Nd-LSCO). Data have been acquired at low and high photon energies, $hν$ = 55 and 500 eV, respectively. Earlier comparable low-energy studies of La$_{1.4-x}$Nd$_{0.6}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ ($x = 0.10, 0.12, 0.15$) have shown strongly suppressed photoemission intensity, or absence thereof, in large parts of the Brillouin zone. Contrary to these findings we observe spectral weight at all points along the entire Fermi surface contour…

The momentum and temperature dependence of the superconducting gap and pseudogap in optimally-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_6$ superconductor is investigated by super-high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The measured energy gap in the superconducting state exhibits a standard {\it d}-wave form. Pseudogap opens above T$_c$ over a large portion of the Fermi surface with a "Fermi arc" formed near the nodal region. In the region outside of the "Fermi arc", the pseudogap has the similar magnitude and momentum dependence as the gap in the superconducting stat…
High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on underdoped (La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$)CuO$_4$ system show that, at energies below 70 meV, the quasiparticle peak is well defined around the ($π$/2,$π$/2) nodal region and disappears rather abruptly when the momentum is changed from the nodal point to the ($π$,0) antinodal point along the underlying ``Fermi surface''. It indicates that there is an extra low energy scattering mechanism acting upon the antinodal quasiparticles. We propose that this mechanism is the scattering of quasiparticles across the nearly parallel segments of the Fermi sur…
Superconductivity in high temperature superconductors is achieved by introducing charge carriers into cuprate insulators containing CuO$_2$ planes. Perturbation in these CuO$_2$ planes suppresses superconductivity by strongly affecting the electronic environment. Here we have use photoinduced electronic modification of Cu ion in CuO$_2$ plane to investigate the effect of local perturbation in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$. This method has been used to suppress superconducting transition temperature T$_c$. We show that our results on photoinduced suppression of superconductivity are consis…
Electronic charge order is a symmetry breaking state in high-$T_\mathrm{c}$ cuprate superconductors. In scanning tunneling microscopy, the detected charge-order-induced modulation is an electronic response of the charge order. For an overdoped (Bi,Pb)$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$_{6+x}$ sample, we apply scanning tunneling microscopy to explore local properties of the charge order. The ordering wavevector is non-dispersive with energy, which can be confirmed and determined. By extracting its order-parameter field, we identify dislocations in the stripe structure of the electronic modulation, which correspond …
Recent spectroscopic observations of a d-wave-like gap in stripe-ordered La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) with x=1/8 have led us to critically analyze the anisotropic transport and magnetization properties of this material. The data suggest that concomitant with the spin ordering is an electronic decoupling of the CuO(2) planes. We observe a transition (or crossover) to a state of two-dimensional (2D) fluctuating superconductivity, which eventually reaches a 2D superconducting state below a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Thus, it appears that the stripe order in La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) frustrates th…
