In high-temperature cuprate superconductors, the anti-ferromagnetic spin fluctuations are thought to have a very important role in naturally producing an attractive interaction between the electrons in the $d$-wave channel. The connection between superconductivity and spin fluctuations is expected to be especially consequential at the overdoped end point of the superconducting dome. In some materials, that point seems to coincide with a Lifshitz transition, where the Fermi surface changes from the hole-like centered at ($π, π$) to the electron-like, centered at the $Γ$ point causing a loss of large momentum anti-ferromagnetic fluctuations. Here, we study the doping dependence of the electronic structure of Bi$_{1.8}$Pb$_{0.4}$Sr$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ in angle-resolved photoemission and find that the superconductivity vanishes at lower doping than at which the Lifshitz transition occurs. This requires a more detailed re-examination of a spin-fluctuation scenario.
The dispersion of the Cu-O bond-stretching vibrations in overdoped La$_{1.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$CuO$_4$ (not superconducting) has been studied by high resolution inelastic neutron scattering. It was found that the doping-induced renormalization of the so-called breathing and the half-breathing modes is larger than in optimally doped La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$. On the other hand, the phonon linewidths are generally smaller in the overdoped sample. Features observed in optimally doped La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$ which suggest a tendency towards charge stripe formation are absent in overdoped La$_{1.…
We report detailed thermodynamic and transport measurements for non-superconducting La$_{1.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$CuO$_4$. Collectively, these data reveal that a highly-correlated Fermi-liquid ground state exists in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ beyond the superconducting dome, and confirm that charge transport in the cuprates is dominated at finite temperatures by intense electron-electron scattering.
Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies of the overdoped cuprate superconductor La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ find only small changes in the near nodal electron self energy over a spectral range of several hundred meV as the doping increases from x=0.2 to x=0.3 and the superconducting transition temperature T_c decreases from 32K to 0K. These measurements put constraints on the structure of the electron-electron interaction. Here we show that a spin-fluctuation interaction leads to behavior which is consistent with these experimental results.
Our inelastic neutron scattering experiments of the spin excitations in the slightly overdoped La{1.83}Sr{0.17}CuO{4} compound show that, under the application of a magnetic field of 5 Tesla, the low-temperature susceptibility undergoes a weight redistribution centered at the spin-gap energy. Furthermore, by comparing the temperature dependence of the neutron data with ac-susceptibility and magnetization measurements, we conclude that the filling in of the spin gap tracks the irreversibility/melting temperature rather than Tc2, which indicates an unusual interplay between the magnetic vortices…
We report a detailed inelastic neutron scattering study of the collective magnetic excitations of overdoped superconducting La1.78Sr0.22CuO4 for the energy range 0-160 meV. Our measurements show that overdoping suppresses the strong response present for optimally doped La2-xSrxCuO4 which is peaked near 50 meV. The remaining response is peaked at incommensurate wavevectors for all energies investigated. We observe a strong high-frequency magnetic response for E >= 80 meV suggesting that significant antiferromagnetic exchange couplings persist well into the overdoped part of the cuprate phase di…
We report on semiclassical angle-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) and the Shubnikov-de Haas effect in the electron-overdoped cuprate superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$. Our data provide convincing evidence for magnetic breakdown in the system. This shows that a reconstructed multiply-connected Fermi surface persists, at least at strong magnetic fields, up to the highest doping level of the superconducting regime. Our results suggest an intimate relation between translational symmetry breaking and the superconducting pairing in the electron-doped cuprate superconductors.
We demonstrate the presence of ferromagnetic (FM) fluctuations in the superconducting and non-superconducting heavily overdoped regimes of high-temperature superconducting copper oxides, using (Bi,Pb)_2_Sr_2_CuO_6+delta_ (Bi-2201) single crystals. Magnetization curves exhibit a tendency to be saturated in high magnetic fields at low temperatures in the heavily overdoped crystals, which is probably a precursor phenomenon of a FM transition at a lower temperature. Muon spin relaxation detects the enhancement of spin fluctuations at high temperatures below 200 K. Correspondingly, the ab-plane res…
We have grown a single crystal of La_2-x_Sr_x_CuO_4_ in which the Sr concentration, x, continuously changes from 0.24 to 0.29 in the overdoped regime and obtained many pieces of single crystals with different x values by slicing the single crystal. From detailed measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, chi, of each piece, it has been found that the absolute value of chi at the measured lowest temperature 2 K, |chi_2K_|, on field cooling rapidly decreases with increasing x as well as the superconducting (SC) transition temperature. As the value of |chi_2K_| is regarded as corresponding to t…
In order to investigate the inhomogeneity of the superconducting (SC) state in the overdoped high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates, we have measured the magnetic susceptibility, $χ$, of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) single crystals in the overdoped regime in magnetic fields parallel to the c-axis up to 7 T on warming after zero-field cooling. It has been found for $x$ = 0.198 and 0.219 that the temperature dependence of $χ$ in 1 T shows a plateau, that is, $χ$ is almost independent of temperature in a moderate temperature-range in the SC state. Moreover, a so-called second peak in the magnetization curve…
Following a recent study by our group in which a large $T_c$ enhancement was reported in bilayers of the non-superconducting $La_{1.65}Sr_{0.35}CuO_4$ and superconducting $La_{1.88}Sr_{0.12}CuO_4$ films [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{101}, 057005 (2008)], we checked if a similar effect occurs when superconducting $La_{1.88}Sr_{0.12}CuO_4$ islands are coated with a continuous layer of the non superconducting $La_{1.65}Sr_{0.35}CuO_4$. We found that no such phenomenon is observed. The bare superconducting islands film behaves as an insulator where transport occurs via hopping or tunneling between isl…
We study the electronic structure and superconductivity in CuO$_2$ monolayer grown recently on $d$-wave cuprate superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$. Density functional theory calculations indicate significant charge transfer across the interface such that the CuO$_2$ monolayer is heavily overdoped into the hole-rich regime yet inaccessible in bulk cuprates. We show that both the Cu $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals become important and the Fermi surface contains one electron and one hole pocket associated with the two orbitals respectively. Constructing a minimal correlated tw…
This article describes new polar angle-dependent magnetoresistance (ADMR) measurements in the overdoped cuprate Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ over an expanded range of temperatures and azimuthal angles. These detailed measurements re-affirm the analysis of earlier data taken over a more restricted temperature range and at a single azimuthal orientation, in particular the delineation of the intraplane scattering rate into isotropic and anisotropic components. These new measurements also reveal additional features in the temperature and momentum dependence of the scattering rate, including anisotropy …
The electron dynamics in the normal state of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ is studied by inelastic light scattering over a wide range of doping. A strong anisotropy of the electron relaxation is found which cannot be explained by single-particle properties alone. The results strongly indicate the presence of an unconventional quantum-critical metal-insulator transition where "hot" (antinodal) quasiparticles become insulating while "cold" (nodal) quasiparticles remain metallic. A phenomenology is developed which allows a quantitative understanding of the Raman results and provides a scenario wh…
We present in-plane optical study on Tl$_{2}$Ba$_{2}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ single crystals with substantially different $T_c$. The study reveals that the overdoping does not lead to a further increase of the carrier density but a decrease of scattering rate. The most significant change occurs at low temperature and in the low frequency. A characteristic spectral feature, seen most clearly for the optimally doped sample and commonly ascribed to the mode coupling effect, weakens with doping and disappears in the heavily overdoped sample. Meanwhile, the optical scattering rate evolves from a linear-$ω$ dep…
Using a combination of time-domain THz spectroscopy (TDTS) and mutual inductance measurements, we have investigated the low-energy electrodynamic response of overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ films that have been exposed to ion irradiation. Films went through three rounds of irradiation (2, 4, and 6 $\times 10^{13}$ ions/cm$^2$) and mutual inductance and TDTS experiments were performed between each step. Together with the as-grown film, this gives four different levels of disorder. The transport scattering rate that is measured directly in the THz experiments is an approximately linear functio…
To investigate the validity of the Wiedemann-Franz (WF) law in disordered but metallic cuprates, the low-temperature charge and heat transport properties are carefully studied for a series of impurity-substituted and carrier-overdoped La_{1.8}Sr_{0.2}Cu_{1-z}M_zO_4 (M = Zn or Mg) single crystals. With moderate impurity substitution concentrations of z = 0.049 and 0.082 (M = Zn), the resistivity shows a clear metallic behavior at low temperature and the WF law is confirmed to be valid. With increasing impurity concentration to z = 0.13 (M = Zn) or 0.15 (M = Mg), the resistivity shows a low-T up…
Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the copper K absorption edge has been performed for heavily overdoped samples of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ with $x= 0.25$ and 0.30. We have observed the charge transfer and molecular-orbital excitations which exhibit resonances at incident energies of $E_i= 8.992$ and 8.998 keV, respectively. From a comparison with previous results on undoped and optimally-doped samples, we determine that the charge-transfer excitation energy increases monotonically as doping increases. In addition, the $E_i$-dependences of the RIXS spectral weight and absorption…
The in-plane resistivity of the high-temperature oxide superconductor La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ [LSCO] shows a strong growth of a contribution linear in temperature as the doping is reduced in the overdoped region toward optimal. This linear term is a signature of non-Fermi liquid behavior. We find that the appearance of a linear term in the resistivity can arise in a semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory which uses renormalized quasiparticle scattering rates and an empirical band structure fitted to ARPES data on LSCO. The linearized Boltzmann equation is solved numerically by discretizi…
Nodal angle resolved photoemission spectra taken on overdoped La$_{1.77}$Sr$_{0.23}$CuO$_4$ are presented and analyzed. It is proven that the low-energy excitations are true Landau Fermi-liquid quasiparticles. We show that momentum and energy distribution curves can be analyzed self-consistently without quantitative knowledge of the bare band dispersion. Finally, by imposing Kramers-Kronig consistency on the self-energy $Σ$, insight into the quasiparticle residue is gained. We conclude by comparing our results to quasiparticle properties extracted from thermodynamic, magneto-resistance, and hi…
We revisit the Hall effect and magnetoresistivity by incorporating the anisotropic scattering caused by apical oxygen vacancies in overdoped La-based cuprates. The theoretical calculations within the Fermi liquid picture agree well with a handful of anomalous magneto-transport data, better than the results using an isotropic scattering rate alone. In particular, we obtain the upturn of Hall coefficient $R_H$ with decreasing temperature $T$, the initial drop of $R_H$ in magnetic field $B$ in all overdoped regimes, the linear resistivity $ρ$ versus $B$ near the van Hove doping level, the tempera…
Recent study of overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ cuprate superconductor thin films by Božović {\it et al.} has revealed several unexpected findings, most notably the violation of the BCS description which was believed to adequately describe overdoped cuprates. In particular, it was found that the superfluid density in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ films decreases on the overdoped side as a linear function of critical temperature T$_c$, which was taken as evidence for the violation of the Homes' law. We show explicitly that the law is indeed violated, and as the main reason for violation we find tha…
We have measured the irreversible magnetization of an overdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$_6$ single crystal up to B=28 T and down to T=60 mK, and extracted the irreversibility line $B_{\rm irr}(T)$: the data can be interpreted in the whole temperature range as a 3D-anisotropic vortex lattice melting line with Lindemann number $c_{\rm L}=0.13$. We also briefly discuss the applicability of alternative models such as 2D- and quantum melting, and the connection with magnetoresistance experiments.
The ab plane optical spectra of two single crystals of La(2-x)Sr(x)Cu(4), one overdoped and one underdoped, were investigated. We observe a gap-like depression of the effective scattering rate below 700 cm(-1) in both systems. This feature persists up to 300 K in the underdoped sample with the concentration of Sr x=0.14 but loses prominance at temperatures above 300 K in the overdoped regime (x=0.22). Below 700 cm(-1) the scattering rate is temperature dependent and superlinear in frequency for both samples. Above this frequency the effective scattering rate becomes linear in frequency and is …
The pseudogap (PG) state and its related intra-unit-cell symmetry breaking remain the focus in the research of cuprate superconductors. Although the nematicity has been studied in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$, especially underdoped samples, its behavior in other cuprates and different doping regions is still unclear. Here we apply a scanning tunneling microscope to explore an overdoped (Bi, Pb)$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ with a large Fermi surface (FS). The establishment of a nematic order and its real-space distribution is visualized as the energy scale approaches the PG.
Electronic charge order is a symmetry breaking state in high-$T_\mathrm{c}$ cuprate superconductors. In scanning tunneling microscopy, the detected charge-order-induced modulation is an electronic response of the charge order. For an overdoped (Bi,Pb)$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$_{6+x}$ sample, we apply scanning tunneling microscopy to explore local properties of the charge order. The ordering wavevector is non-dispersive with energy, which can be confirmed and determined. By extracting its order-parameter field, we identify dislocations in the stripe structure of the electronic modulation, which correspond …
A structural phase transformation in the CuO_2 planes of YBa_2Cu_3O_x has been observed at the onset of the overdoped regime, x=6.95. We have measured as a function of x the dimpling in the CuO_2 planes by EXAFS, and the O2,3 in-phase (A_1g) mode by Raman scattering. The data show for x>6.95 anomalously large static displacements of the Cu2 atoms off the O2,3 layer, and a gap in the distribution of the O2,3 in-phase Raman shifts. We conclude the structure of overdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_x to be a martensitic form of the structure most favourable for the superconductivity, and possibly at the origin of…
We report the results of electronic Raman scattering experiments on an overdoped La(1.78)Sr(0.22)CuO(4) single crystal as a function of temperature. The scattering rate Gamma(w->0,T) has been determined from the normal state B(1g) spectra in the range 50 K < T < 300 K. Gamma(T) decreases linearly from 300 K to about 175 K and then undergoes a reduction with respect to the expected mean-field behavior. This trend suggests a crossover to pseudoscaling regime at about T(cr)=160 K. The results are in good agreement with the prediction of the nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid model. There is no…
The spontaneous expulsion of applied magnetic field, the Meissner effect, is a defining feature of superconductors; in Type-II superconductors above the lower critical field, this screening takes the form of a lattice of magnetic flux vortices. Using implanted spin-1/2 positive muons, one can measure the vortex lattice field distribution through the spin precession and deduce key parameters of the superconducting ground state, and thereby fundamental properties of the superconducting pairing. Muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) experiments have indeed revealed much interesting physics in the…
Recently, several experiments on La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) challenged the Fermi liquid picture for overdoped cuprates, and stimulated intensive debates [1]. In this work, we study the magnetotransport phenomena in such systems based on the Fermi liquid assumption. The Hall coefficient $R_H$ and magnetoresistivity $ρ_{xx}$ are investigated near the van Hove singularity $x_{\tiny\text{VHS}}\approx0.2$ across which the Fermi surface topology changes from hole- to electron-like. Our main findings are: (1) $R_H$ depends on the magnetic field $B$ and drops from positive to negative values with …
We present a soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the overdoped high-temperature superconductors La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and La$_{1.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. In-plane and out-of-plane components of the Fermi surface are mapped by varying the photoemission angle and the incident photon energy. No $k_z$ dispersion is observed along the nodal direction, whereas a significant antinodal $k_z$ dispersion is identified. Based on a tight-binding parametrization, we discuss the implications for the density of states near the van-Hove singularity. Our results suggest that th…
The electronic states near the Fermi level of recently discovered superconductor Ba$_2$CuO$_{4-δ}$ consist primarily of the Cu $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals. We investigate the electronic correlation effect and the orbital polarization of an effective two-orbital Hubbard model mimicking the low-energy physics of Ba$_2$CuO$_{4-δ}$ in the hole-rich regime by utilizing the dynamical mean-field theory with the Lanczos method as the impurity solver. We find that the hole-overdoped Ba$_2$CuO$_{4-δ}$ with $3d^8$ (Cu$^{3+}$) is in the orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP) at half-filling, an…
The low-temperature specific heat (SH) of overdoped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} single crystals (0.178=<x=<0.290) has been measured. For the superconducting samples (0.178=<x=<0.238), the derived gap values (without any adjusting parameters) approach closely onto the theoretical prediction Δ_{0}=2.14k_{B}T_{c} for the weak-coupling d-wave BCS superconductivity. In addition, the residual term γ(0) of SH at H=0 increases with x dramatically when beyond x~0.22, and finally evolves into the value of a complete normal metallic state at higher doping levels, indicating growing amount of unpaired electrons…
We demonstrate the existence of a simple physical picture of superconductivity for extremely overdoped CuO2 planes. It possesses all characteristic features of HTS, such as a high superconducting transition temperature, the $d_{x^2 - y^2}$ symmetry of order parameter, and the coexistence of a single electron Fermi surface and a pseudogap in the normal state. Values of pseudogap are calculated for different doping levels. An orbital paramagnetism of preformed pairs is predicted.
Using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Cu $L$-absorption edge, we have observed intense, dispersive spin excitations in highly overdoped Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (superconducting $T_c =6$ K), a compound whose normal-state charge transport and thermodynamic properties have been studied extensively and shown to exhibit canonical Fermi-liquid behavior. Complementary RIXS experiments on slightly overdoped Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ ($T_c =89$ K) and on Y$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ compounds spanning a wide range of doping levels indicate that these excitations exhibit energi…
Recently, advances in film synthesis methods have enabled a study of extremely overdoped $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$. This has revealed a surprising behavior of the superfluid density as a function of doping and temperature, the explanation of which is vividly debated. One popular class of models posits electronic phase separation, where the superconducting phase fraction decreases with doping, while some competing phase (e.g. ferromagnetic) progressively takes over. A problem with this scenario is that all the way up to the dome edge the superconducting transition remains sharp, according to mutu…
Charge modulations are considered as a leading competitor of high-temperature superconductivity in the underdoped cuprates, and their relationship to Fermi surface reconstructions and to the pseudogap state is an important subject of current research. Overdoped cuprates, on the other hand, are widely regarded as conventional Fermi liquids without collective electronic order. For the overdoped (Bi,Pb)2.12Sr1.88CuO6+δ (Bi2201) high-temperature superconductor, here we report resonant x-ray scattering measurements revealing incommensurate charge order reflections, with correlation lengths of 40-60…
We analyze the extended superfluid density data of Božović \textit{ et al}. taken on homogenous thin films to explore the critical properties of the thermal (TSM) and quantum superconductor to metal (QSM) transitions in overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$. The temperature dependence reveals remarkable agreement with d-wave BCS behavior, where $σ\propto 1/λ^{2}$. No sign of the expected KTB transition is observable. We show that the critical amplitude $ρ_{s0}=ρ_{s}\left( T\right) /\left( 1-T/T_{c}\right) $ scales as $T_{c}\propto ρ_{s0}^{1/2}$ and with that as $T_{c}\propto ρ_{s}\left( 0\righ…
We present measurements of $ab$-plane resistivity $ρ_{ab}(T)$ and superfluid density [$\propto λ^{-2}$, $λ$ = magnetic penetration depth] in $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$ films. As Sr concentration $x$ exceeds about 0.22, the superconducting transition sharpens dramatically, becoming as narrow as 200 mK near the super-to-normal metal quantum critical point. At the same time, $ρ_{ab}(T)$, $λ^{-2}(T)$, and transition temperature $T_c$ decrease, and upward curvature develops in $λ^{-2}(T)$. Given the sharp transitions, we interpret these results in the context of a homogeneous d-wave superconducting st…
We report on a study of the influence of defects introduced in the CuO$_{2}$ planes of cuprates in a wide range of hole dopings n. T$_{c}$ and electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$ measurements have been performed on electron irradiated YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ and Tl$_{2}$Ba$_{2}$CuO$_{6+x}$ single crystals. A universal scaling between the decrease in T$_{c}$ and $\UNICODE[m]{0x394}ρ_{2D}\UNICODE[m]{0xd7}n$, where $\UNICODE[m]{0x394}ρ_{2D}$ is the increase of the 2D-resistance induced by the defects, is found for all the samples investigated here. This demonstrates that n is the relevant parameter …
The magnetic properties of the Zn-substituted overdoped high-$T_c$ superconductor La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$Cu$_{1-y}$Zn$_{y}$O$_{4}$ have been studied by magnetization measurements and neutron scattering. Magnetization measurements reveal that for Zn-free samples with $x \geq 0.22$ a Curie term is induced in the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility implying the existence of local paramagnetic moments. The induced Curie constant corresponds to a moment of 0.5 $μ_B$ per additional Sr$^{2+}$ ion that exceeds $x=0.22$. Zn-substitution in the overdoped \lsco also induces a Curie term that…
We study the vortex phase diagram of the single-layer Bi2Sr2CuO6+d (Bi2201) superconductor by means of bulk magnetization measurements on high-quality oxygen-overdoped crystals. In striking contrast with the results found in the moderately-doped two and three-layer Bi-based cuprates, Bi2201 exhibits a strong temperature-dependent second-peak effect. By means of measurements of the in and out-of-plane first-penetration field we provide direct evidence that this phenomenon is mainly associated to an increase of the electromagnetic anisotropy on warming. The effect of oxygen-doping d on the vorte…
We calculate the quasiparticle scattering rate in the superconducting state of the overdoped cuprates, in the context of the Eliashberg formalism for a Fermi liquid with strong van Hove singularities close to the chemical potential. For a $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconducting gap, we demonstrate analytically that the scattering rate is linear in the maximum of temperature or energy, but with different intercepts and momentum dependence. We discuss our results in view of angle-resolved photoemission experiments. We also discuss the case of a s-wave gap.
By measuring the superconducting diamagnetic moments for an underdoped and an overdoped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 single crystal with equal qualities and roughly equal transition temperatures, it is found that the underdoped sample has only one transition which corresponds to H_{c2}, but the overdoped sample has two transitions with the higher one at H_{c2}. Further investigation reveals the same upper-critical field H_{c2} for both samples although the overall charge densities are very different, indicating the possibility of a very direct and detailed equivalence of the superconducting condensation …
We report Raman scattering spectra for single crystals of overdoped Tl2Ba2CuO6+d (Tl-2201) at low temperatures. It was observed that the pair-breaking peaks in A1g and B1g spectra radically shift to lower energy with carrier doping. We interpret it as s-wave component mixing into d-wave, although the crystal structure is tetragonal. Since similar phenomena were observed also in YBa2Cu3Oy and Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oz, we conclude that s-wave mixing is a common property for overdoped high-Tc superconductors.

One of the key issues in unraveling the mystery of high Tc superconductivity in the cuprates is to understand the normal state outside the superconducting dome. Here we perform scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy measurements on a heavily overdoped, non-superconducting (Bi,Pb)2Sr2CuO6+x cuprate. Spectroscopic imaging reveals dispersive quasiparticle interferences and the Fourier transforms uncover the evolution of momentum space topology. More interestingly, we observe nanoscale patches of static charge order with sqrt(2)*sqrt(2) periodicity. Both the dispersive quasiparticle interf…
We report site-selective $^{63}$Cu NMR studies of the vortex core states of an overdoped Tl$_{2}$Ba$_{2}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ with $T_{c}$ = 85 K. We observed a relatively high density of low-energy quasi-particle excitations at the vortex cores in a magnetic field of 7.4847 T along the c axis, in contrast to YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$.
Photoexcited quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in overdoped Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ ($T_{c}$=65~K, hole doping $p$=0.22) single crystal is investigated as a function of temperature. We provide evidence of a $\sim$22~meV pseudogap ($T^{\ast}$$\approx$100~K) at this doping level. Our data support the scenario where both the superconducting gap and pseudogap coexist in the superconducting state. Our results also suggest an increased scattering rate between electrons and spin fluctuations as the sample enters the pseudogap phase.
We use resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS) to quantify the hole distribution in a superlattice of insulating La2CuO4 (LCO) and overdoped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO4 (LSCO). Despite its non-superconducting constituents, this structure is superconducting with T_{c}=38 K. We found that the conducting holes redistribute electronically from LSCO to the LCO layers. The LCO layers were found to be optimally doped, suggesting they are the main drivers of superconductivity. Our results demonstrate the utility of RSXS for separating electronic from structural effects at oxide interfaces.
We propose a phenomenological model for high-$T_{c}$ superconductors (HTSC) assuming: (1) a microscopic phase separation between superconducting and normal-metal areas in the overdoped region; and (2) existence of a homogeneous superconducting phase only below the pseudo-gap $T^{*}$ line, which shows a sharp reduction towards $T^{*}\sim 0$ at a mildly overdoped critical concentration $x_{c}$. This model explains anomalous doping and temperature dependences of $n_{s}/m^{*}$ (superconducting carrier density / effective mass) observed in several overdoped HTSC systems. We point out an analogy to …
A comprehensive angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the band structure in single layer cuprates is presented with the aim of uncovering universal trends across different materials. Five different hole- and electron-doped cuprate superconductors (La$_{1.59}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.21}$CuO$_4$, La$_{1.77}$Sr$_{0.23}$CuO$_4$, Bi$_{1.74}$Pb$_{0.38}$Sr$_{1.88}$CuO$_{6+δ}$, Tl$_{2}$Ba$_{2}$CuO$_{6+δ}$, and Pr$_{1.15}$La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4}$) have been studied with special focus on the bands with predominately $d$-orbital character. Using light polarization analysis, the $e_g$ and $t_{…
We determined the optical conductivity of Bi(2)Sr(2-x)La(x)CuO(6) at dopings covering the phase diagram from the underdoped to the overdoped regimes. The frequency dependent scattering rate shows a pseudogap extending into the overdoped regime. We found that the effective mass enhancement calculated from the optical conductivity is constant throughout the phase diagram. Conversely, the effective optical charge density varies almost linearly with doping. Our results suggest that the low frequency electrodynamics of Bi(2)Sr(2-x)La(x)CuO(6) is not strongly affected by the long range Mott transiti…
We have performed neutron inelastic scattering and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Cu-$L_3$ edge to study high-energy magnetic excitations at energy transfers of more than 100 meV for overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ with $x=0.25$ ($T_c=15$ K) and $x=0.30$ (non-superconducting) using identical single crystal samples for the two techniques. From constant-energy slices of neutron scattering cross-sections, we have identified magnetic excitations up to ~250 meV for $x=0.25$. Although the width in the momentum direction is large, the peak positions along the (pi, pi) directi…
The in-plane thermal conductivity $κ$ of overdoped FeAs-based superconductor BaFe$_{1.73}$Co$_{0.27}$As$_2$ ($T_c$ = 8.1 K) single crystal was measured down to 80 mK. In zero field, the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is negligible, suggesting a nodeless superconducting gap in the $ab$-plane. In magnetic field, $κ_0/T$ increases rapidly, very different from that of conventional s-wave superconductors. This anomalous $κ_0/T(H)$ may reveal an exotic superconducting gap structure in overdoped BaFe$_{1.73}$Co$_{0.27}$As$_2$: the vanishing hole ($β$) pocket has a much larger gap than the electron ($γ$…
In this work, the concentration and temperature dependences of the superconducting gap of the HTSC cuprate in the orthorhombic phase are obtained within the framework of the Hubbard model taking into account the exchange mechanism of pairing. The enhanced s*-wave component of the superconducting gap against the background of the prevailing d-wave component in a narrow range of hole concentrations in the overdoped region is found. To elucidate the reasons for such unusual behavior the electronic structure of the low-energy excitations and the structure of the contributions of the pair states to…
The interpretation of how superconductivity disappears in cuprates at large hole doping has been controversial. To address this issue, we present an experimental study of single-crystal and thin film samples of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) with $x\ge0.25$. In particular, measurements of bulk susceptibility on LSCO crystals with $x=0.25$ indicate an onset of diamagnetism at $T_{c1}=38.5$ K, with a sharp transition to a phase with full bulk shielding at $T_{c2}=18$ K, independent of field direction. Strikingly, the in-plane resistivity only goes to zero at $T_{c2}$. Inelastic neutron scatterin…
We present a theoretical framework for understanding the behavior of the normal and superconducting states of overdoped cuprate high temperature superconductors in the vicinity of the doping-tuned quantum superconductor-to-metal transition. The key ingredients on which we focus are d-wave pairing, a flat antinodal dispersion, and disorder. Even for homogeneous disorder, these lead to effectively granular superconducting correlations and a superconducting transition temperature determined in large part by the superfluid stiffness rather than the pairing scale.
