We study the hydrodynamic properties of strongly coupled SU(N) Yang-Mills theory of the D1-brane at finite temperature in the framework of gauge/gravity duality. The only non-trivial viscous transport coefficient in 1+1 dimensions is the bulk viscosity. We evaluate the bulk viscosity by isolating the quasi-normal mode corresponding to the sound channel for the gravitational background of the D1-brane. We find that the ratio of the bulk viscosity to the entropy density to be 1/4π. This ratio continues to be $1/4π$ also in the regime when the D1-brane Yang-Mills theory is dual to the gravitational background of the fundamental string. Our analysis shows that this ratio is equal to 1/4πfor a class of gravitational backgrounds dual to field theories in 1+1 dimensions obtained by considering D1-branes at cones over Sasaki-Einstein 7-manifolds.
In this paper, we introduced the black brane solution in Rastall theory and in the context of massive gravity. The ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density is calculated for this solution. Our result shows that the KSS bound violates for this theory.
We introduce the Einstein-Yang-Mills AdS black brane solution in context of massive gravity. The ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density is calculated for this solution. This value violates the KSS bound if we apply the Dirichlet boundary and regularity on the horizon conditions.
In this paper we calculate the ratio of transverse shear viscosity to entropy density for the general anisotropic black brane in Horava-Lifshitz gravity. There is a well-known conjecture that states this ratio should be larger than $\frac{1}{4π}$. The ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density is proportional to the inverse square coupling of quantum thermal field theory,$\frac{η}{s} \sim \frac{1}{λ^2 }$. Especially in QFT with gravity dual the stronger coupling means the shear viscosity per entropy density gets closer to the lower bound of $\frac{1}{4π}$. The KSS bound preserves in the aniso…
We calculate the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density for a black brane of $5$-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills Gravity by Kubo and membrane paradigm methods. The former gives $\frac{1}{4π}$ exactly which is an expected result in the context of the Einstein-Hilbert gravity. In contrast, the membrane paradigm reaches $\frac{1}{4π}$ only in large horizon radius limit. We comment on this discrepancy.
Kovtun, Son and Starinets have conjectured that the viscosity to entropy density ratio $η/s$ is always bounded from below by a universal multiple of $\hbar$ i.e., $\hbar/(4πk_{B})$ for all forms of matter. Mysteriously, the proposed viscosity bound appears to be saturated in all computations done whenever a supergravity dual is available. We consider the near horizon limit of a stack of M2-branes in the grand canonical ensemble at finite R-charge densities, corresponding to non-zero angular momentum in the bulk. The corresponding four-dimensional R-charged black hole in Anti-de Sitter space pr…
We investigate black brane solutions in asymptotically Lifshitz spacetime in 3+1-dimensional Horndeski gravity, which admit a critical exponent fixed at $z=1/2$. The cosmological constant depends on $z$ as $Λ=-(1+2z)/L^{2}$. We compute the shear viscosity in the 2+1-dimensional dual boundary field theory via holographic correspondence. We investigate the violation of the bound for viscosity to entropy density ratio of $η/s\geq1/(4π)$ at $z=1/2$.
A Lifshitz black brane at generic dynamical critical exponent $z > 1$, with non-zero linear momentum along the boundary, provides a holographic dual description of a non-equilibrium steady state in a quantum critical fluid, with Lifshitz scale invariance but without boost symmetry. We consider moving Lifshitz branes in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton gravity and obtain the non-relativistic stress tensor complex of the dual field theory via a suitable holographic renormalisation procedure. The resulting black brane hydrodynamics and thermodynamics are a concrete holographic realization of a Lifshitz p…
We examine the hydrodynamic limit of non-conformal branes using the recently developed precise holographic dictionary. We first streamline the discussion of holography for backgrounds that asymptote locally to non-conformal brane solutions by showing that all such solutions can be obtained from higher dimensional asymptotically locally AdS solutions by suitable dimensional reduction and continuation in the dimension. As a consequence, many holographic results for such backgrounds follow from the corresponding results of the Asymptotically AdS case. In particular, the hydrodynamics of non-confo…
Assuming $ω=\sum_n C^{(n)}q^{2n}$ in the low-frequency limit, we apply the refined recipe to compute the dispersion relation of shear quasinormal modes of the Gauss-Bonnet black brane. Treating the Gauss-Bonnet parameter $\lagb$ nonperturbatively and the momentum $q$ perturbatively, we work out $C^{(1)}$, $C^{(2)}$, confirm previous results in the literature and pave the way to a general formula for $C^{(n)}$.
A family of deformed AdS4-Reissner-Nordström black branes, governed by a free parameter, is derived using the ADM formalism, in the context of the membrane paradigm. Their new event horizons, the Hawking temperature and other aspects are scrutinized. AdS/CFT near-horizon methods are then implemented to compute the shear viscosity-to-entropy ratio for the deformed AdS4-Reissner-Nordström metric. The Killing equation is shown to yield new values for the free parameter and the shear viscosity-to-entropy ratio is used to derive a reliable range for tidal charge.
In this paper we consider a metric with hyperscaling violation on black brane background. In this background we calculate the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density with hydrodynamics information. The calculation of this quantity lead us to constraint $θ$ as $3\leqθ<4$, and $θ\leq0$. In that case we show that the quantity of $\fracη{s}$ not dependent to hyperscaling violation parameter $θ.$ Our results about ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density in direct of $QCD$ point of view agree with other works in literature as $1/4π$.
We construct effective hydrodynamics for composite particles in (2+1) dimensions carrying a magnetic flux by employing a holographic approach. The hydrodynamics is obtained by perturbation of the dyonic black brane solutions in the derivative expansion. We introduce a consistent way to avoid mixing of different orders in the expansion. Thanks to this method, it is possible to take the strong external magnetic field limit in the dual field theory. To compare our result with those for a composite particle system, we study several cases that correspond to special solutions of Einstein's equation …
The presence of a bulk viscosity for the cosmic fluid on a single Randall-Sundrum brane is considered. The spatial curvature is assumed to be zero. The five-dimensional Friedmann equation is derived, together with the energy conservation equation for the viscous fluid. These governing equations are solved for some special cases: (i) in the low-energy limit when the matter energy density is small compared with brane tension; (ii) for a matter-dominated universe, and (iii) for a radiation-dominated universe. Rough numerical estimates, for the extreme case when the universe is at its Planck time,…
We show that relativistic hydrodynamics in Minkowski space-time has intrinsic ambiguity in second order viscosity parameters in the Landau-Lifshitz frame. This stems from the possibility of improvements of energy-momentum tensor. There exist at least two viscosity parameters which can be removed by using this ambiguity in scale invariant hydrodynamics in (1+3) dimension, and seemingly non-conformal hydrodynamic theories can be hiddenly conformal invariant.
A black brane solution to a Gauss-Bonnet massive gravity is introduced. In the context of AdS/CFT correspondence, the viscosity to entropy ratio is found by the Green-Kubo formula. The result indicates violation of the well-known KSS bound as expected in a higher derivative theory. Setting mass zero gives back the known viscosity to entropy ratio dependent on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling, while without Gauss-Bonnet term, a nonzero mass parameter doesn't contribute to the ratio which saturates the bound of $1/4π$.
We complete the computation of viscous transport coefficients in the near horizon geometries that arise from a stack of black Dp-branes for p=2,...,6 in the decoupling limit. The main new result is the obtention of the bulk viscosity which, for all p, is found to be related to the speed of sound by the simple relation ζ/η= -2(v_s^2-1/p). For completeness the shear viscosity is rederived from gravitational perturbations in the shear and scalar channels. We comment on technical issues like the counterterms needed, or the possible dependence on the conformal frame.
We construct a new class of 4-dimensional z=2 Lifshitz black branes that have a nonzero linear momentum. These are solutions of an Einstein-Proca-dilaton model that can be obtained by Scherk-Schwarz circle reduction of AdS_5 gravity coupled to a free real scalar field. The boundary of a bulk Lifshitz space-time is a Newton-Cartan geometry. We show that the fluid dual to the moving Lifshitz black brane leads to a novel form of Lifshitz hydrodynamics on a Newton-Cartan space-time. Since the linear momentum of the black brane cannot be obtained by a boost transformation the velocity of the fluid …
We study long wavelength perturbations of neutral black p-branes in asymptotically flat space and show that, as anticipated in the blackfold approach, solutions of the relativistic hydrodynamic equations for an effective p+1-dimensional fluid yield solutions to the vacuum Einstein equations in a derivative expansion. Going beyond the perfect fluid approximation, we compute the effective shear and bulk viscosities of the black brane. The values we obtain saturate generic bounds. Sound waves in the effective fluid are unstable, and have been previously related to the Gregory-Laflamme instability…
We extend the recent work on fluid-gravity correspondence to charged black-branes by determining the metric duals to arbitrary charged fluid configuration up to second order in the boundary derivative expansion. We also derive the energy-momentum tensor and the charge current for these configurations up to second order in the boundary derivative expansion. We find a new term in the charge current when there is a bulk Chern-Simons interaction thus resolving an earlier discrepancy between thermodynamics of charged rotating black holes and boundary hydrodynamics. We have also confirmed that all o…
We study the long-wavelength effective description of two general classes of charged dilatonic (asymptotically flat) black p-branes including D/NS/M-branes in ten and eleven dimensional supergravity. In particular, we consider gravitational brane solutions in a hydrodynamic derivative expansion (to first order) for arbitrary dilaton coupling and for general brane and co-dimension and determine their effective electro-fluid-dynamic descriptions by exacting the characterizing transport coefficients. We also investigate the stability properties of the corresponding hydrodynamic systems by analyzi…
A holographic dual of a finite-temperature SU(N_c) gauge theory with a small number of flavours N_f << N_c typically contains D-branes in a black hole background. By considering the backreaction of the branes, we demonstrate that, to leading order in N_f/N_c, the viscosity to entropy ratio in these theories saturates the conjectured universal bound eta/s >= 1/4π. The contribution of the fundamental matter eta_fund is therefore enhanced at strong 't Hooft coupling lambda; for example, eta_fund ~ lambda N_c N_f T^3 in four dimensions. Other transport coefficients are analogously enhanced. These …
We investigate two transport coefficients, shear viscosity and conductivity, in a non-relativistic boundary filed theory without hyperscaling symmetry, which is dual to a bulk charged hyperscaling violating black brane. Employing matching method, we obtain that the ratio of shear viscosity and the entropy density is alway $1/4π$ at any temperature, which satisfies the Kovtun-Starinets-Son (KSS) bound. Besides, we also present the universal formulas of AC conductivity, which is closely dependent on the relation between geometrical parameters $z$ and $θ$. The optical conductivity at high frequen…
We investigate the possibility of constructing a supergravity background dual to the quark-gluon plasma using D6-branes wrapping a three-cycle in the deformed conifold. The UV-completion of this setup is given by M-theory on a G2 holonomy manifold. For the class of metrics considered we find that there are only non-extremal D-brane solutions in the limit of the singular conifold with the singularity being resolved by the D-brane horizon. The thermodynamic properties of the system show some puzzling features, such as negative specific heat at an unusual behavior of the entropy. Among the proper…
We study the hydrodynamic properties of strongly coupled $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory of the D1-brane at finite temperature and at a non-zero density of R-charge in the framework of gauge/gravity duality. The gravity dual description involves a charged black hole solution of an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system in 3 dimensions which is obtained by a consistent truncation of the spinning D1-brane in 10 dimensions. We evaluate thermal and electrical conductivity as well as the bulk viscosity as a function of the chemical potential conjugate to the R-charges of the D1-brane. We show that the ratio of …
We consider asymptotically-AdS $n$-dimensional black brane solutions in a theory of gravity coupled to a set of $N$ $p$-form field strengths, in which the field strengths carry magnetic charges. For appropriately chosen charges, the metrics are isotropic in the $(n-2)$ transverse directions. However, in general the field strength configurations break the full Euclidean symmetry of the $(n-2)$-dimensional transverse space. We then study the linearised equation for transverse traceless metric perturbations in these backgrounds, and by employing the Kubo formula we obtain expressions for $η/S$, t…
We consider the low energy limit of a stack of N M-branes at finite temperature. In this limit, the M-branes are well described, via the AdS/CFT correspondence, in terms of classical solutions to the eleven dimensional supergravity equations of motion. We calculate Minkowski space two-point functions on these M-branes in the long-distance, low-frequency limit, i.e. the hydrodynamic limit, using the prescription of Son and Starinets [hep-th/0205051]. From these Green's functions for the R-currents and for components of the stress-energy tensor, we extract two kinds of diffusion constant and a v…
In the Seiberg-Witten limit, the low-energy dynamics of N weakly coupled identical open strings on a D3-brane can behave as two-dimensional incompressible hydrodynamics. Classical vortices are frozen in the fluid and described by an action expressed in terms of two canonical conjugate fields, which can be taken as the new space coordinate. The noncommutative space naturally arises when this pair of conjugate fields are quantized. To the lowest order of $\hbar$, the vorticity can replace the background $B$-field on the D3 brane, thereby yielding a spatially and temporally varying noncommutative…
We study linear responses of D0-branes in the low frequency region by using gauge/gravity correspondence. The dynamics of the D0-branes is described by Matrix theory with finite temperature, which is dual to a near extremal D0-brane black hole solution. We analyze the tensor mode and vector modes of a stress tensor and a Ramond-Ramond 1-form current of Matrix theory. Then, we show that if a cutoff surface is close to a horizon of the D0-brane black hole, the linear responses take forms similar to the hydrodynamic stress tensor and current on S^8. By taking a Rindler limit, those linear respons…
We construct anisotropic black brane solutions and analyse the behaviour of some of their metric perturbations. These solutions correspond to field theory duals in which rotational symmetry is broken due an externally applied, spatially constant, force. We find, in several examples, that when the anisotropy is sufficiently big compared to the temperature, some components of the viscosity tensor can become very small in units of the entropy density, parametrically violating the KSS bound. We obtain an expression relating these components of the viscosity, in units of the entropy density, to a r…
In this paper, using the Gauge/gravity duality techniques, we explore the hydrodynamic regime of a very special class of strongly coupled QFTs that come up with an emerging UV length scale in the presence of a negative hyperscaling violating exponent. The dual gravitational counterpart for these QFTs consists of scalar dressed black brane solutions of exactly integrable Einstein-scalar gravity model with Domain Wall (DW) asymptotics. In the first part of our analysis we compute the $ R $-charge diffusion for the boundary theory and find that (unlike the case for the pure $ AdS_{4} $ black bran…
Hydro-kinetic theory of thermal fluctuations is applied to a non-conformal relativistic fluid. Solving the hydro-kinetic equations for an isotropically expanding background we find that hydrodynamic fluctuations give ultraviolet divergent contributions to the energy-momentum tensor. After shifting the temperature to account for the energy of non-equilibrium modes, the remaining divergences are renormalized into local parameters, e.g. pressure and bulk viscosity. We also confirm that the renormalization of the pressure and bulk viscosity is universal by computing them for a Bjorken expansion. T…
Hydrodynamics predicts long-lived sound and shear waves. Thermal fluctuations in these waves can lead to the diffusion of momentum density, contributing to the shear viscosity and other transport coefficients. Within viscous hydrodynamics in 3+1 dimensions, this leads to a positive contribution to the shear viscosity, which is finite but inversely proportional to the microscopic shear viscosity. Therefore the effective infrared viscosity is bounded from below. The contribution to the second-order transport coefficient $τ_π$ is divergent, which means that second-order relativistic viscous hydro…
We obtain new transport coefficients of causal hydrodynamics for the M2 and the M5-brane using a Kubo-like formula proposed by Baier, Romatschke, Son, Starinets, and Stephanov (arXiv:0712.2451 [hep-th]). The relaxation times agree with the ones obtained from the "sound mode" in our paper (arXiv:0712.2916 [hep-th]).
We compute the bulk viscosity in holographic models dual to theories with Lifshitz scaling and/or hyperscaling violation, using a generalization of the bulk viscosity formula derived in arXiv:1103.1657 from the null focusing equation. We find that only a class of models with massive vector fields are truly Lifshitz scale invariant, and have a vanishing bulk viscosity. For other holographic models with scalars and/or massless vector fields we find a universal formula in terms of the dynamical exponent and the hyperscaling violation exponent.
We calculate the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density for charged black branes in third order Lovelock theory. For chargeless black branes, the result turns out to be consistent with the prediction made in $\rm arXiv:0808.3498[\rm hep-th] $. We find that, the third order Lovelock gravity term does not contribute to causality violation unlike the Gauss-Bonnet term. The stability of the black brane again requires the value of the Lovelock coupling constant to be bounded by 1/4 in the infinite dimensionality limit.
We study the effective hydrodynamics of neutral black branes enclosed in a finite cylindrical cavity with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We focus on how the Gregory-Laflamme instability changes as we vary the cavity radius R. Fixing the metric at the cavity wall increases the rigidity of the black brane by hindering gradients of the redshift on the wall. In the effective fluid, this is reflected in the growth of the squared speed of sound. As a consequence, when the cavity is smaller than a critical radius the black brane becomes dynamically stable. The correlation with the change in thermodyn…
We solve second order relativistic hydrodynamics equations for a boost-invariant 1+1-dimensional expanding fluid with an equation of state taken from lattice calculations of the thermodynamics of strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma. We investigate the dependence of the energy density as a function of proper time on the values of the shear viscosity, the bulk viscosity, and second order coefficients, confirming that large changes in the values of the latter have negligible effects. Varying the shear viscosity between zero and a few times s/(4 pi), with s the entropy density, has significant eff…
The long-wavelength effective field theory of world-volume fluctuations of black D3-branes is shown to be a hydrodynamical system to leading order in a gradient expansion. We study the system on a fiducial `cutoff' surface: the fluctuating geometry imprints its dynamics on the surface via an induced stress tensor whose conservation encapsulates the hydrodynamical description. For a generic non-extremal D3-brane, as we move our cutoff surface from the asymptotically flat near-boundary region to the near-horizon region, this hydrodynamical system interpolates between a non-conformal relativistic…
The framework of slowly evolving horizons is generalized to the case of black branes in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces in arbitrary dimensions. The results are used to analyze the behavior of both event and apparent horizons in the gravity dual to boost-invariant flow. These considerations are motivated by the fact that at second order in the gradient expansion the hydrodynamic entropy current in the dual Yang-Mills theory appears to contain an ambiguity. This ambiguity, in the case of boost-invariant flow, is linked with a similar freedom on the gravity side. This leads to a phenomenolo…
The shear viscosity coefficient and the corresponding relaxation time for causal dissipative hydrodynamics are calculated based on the microscopic formula proposed in [T. Koide and T. Kodama, Phys. Rev. \textbf{E 78}, 051107 (2008)]. Here, the exact formula is transformed into a more compact form and applied it to evaluate these transport coefficients in the chiral perturbation theory and perturbative QCD. It is shown that in the leading order calculation, the causal shear viscosity coefficient $η$ reduces to that of the ordinary Green-Kubo-Nakano formula, and the relaxation time $τ_π$ is rela…
We present the long-wavelength effective description of non-extremal spinning black D3-branes in flat space. Our setup is motivated by recent explorations of low energy dynamics on black brane world-volumes within the blackfold approach and its connections to the fluid/gravity correspondence. The spinning D3-branes with a rigid radial Dirichlet cut-off give rise to an effective field theory. This theory describes a charged plasma which is driven by external forces, given by one vector and two scalar operators. Furthermore, the flavour charge of this plasma is anomalous, allowing us to examine …
We construct $SL(2,R)$ invariant in anisotropic medium, with a dual anisotropic charged black hole geometry in massive gravity. We show how to obtain $SL(2,R)$ elements in terms of new degrees of freedom for Electromagnetic configuration, and construct the general expressions for conductivity with $SL(2,R)$ invariant. The holographic conductivities can be calculated using horizon data in an external magnetic field, and we show the numerical results using the linear response theory.
The Shiromizu et al. \cite{SMS} covariant decomposition formalism is used to find out the brane properties rooted from the 5-dimensional Witten bubble spacetime. The non-local tensor $E_{ab}$ generated by the 5-dimensional Weyl tensor gives rise at an anisotropic energy-momentum tensor on the brane with negative energy density and $p = ρ/3$ as equation of state. The tidal acceleration is towards the brane and that is in accordance with the negative energy density on the brane. The anisotropic fluid has vanishing "bulk" viscosity but the shear viscosity coefficient is $r$- and $t$- dependent. T…
Second-order dissipative hydrodynamic equations for each component of a multi-component system are derived using the entropy principle. Comparison of the solutions with kinetic transport results demonstrates validity of the obtained equations. We demonstrate how the shear viscosity of the total system can be calculated in terms of the involved cross sections and partial densities. Presence of the inter-species interactions leads to a characteristic time-dependence of the shear viscosity of the mixture, which also means that the shear viscosity of a mixture cannot be calculated using the Green-…
We have modified the holographic model of Saremi and Son by using a charged black brane, instead of a neutral one, such that when the bulk pseudo scalar potential is made of quadratic and quartic terms, parity can still be broken spontaneously in the boundary theory. In our model, the 3+1 dimensional bulk has a pseudo scalar coupled to the gravitational Chern-Simons term in the anti de Sitter charged black brane back ground. Parity could be broken spontaneously in the bulk by the pseudo scalar hairy solution and give rise to non-zero Hall viscosity at the boundary theory.
We consider the lower bound for the shear viscosity-to-entropy density ratio, obtained from the fluid/gravity correspondence, in order to constrain the post-Newtonian parameter of brane-world metrics. In particular, we analyse the Casadio-Fabbri-Mazzacurati (CFM) effective solutions for the gravity side of the correspondence and argue that including higher order terms in the hydrodynamic expansion can lead to a full agreement with the experimental bounds, for the Eddington-Robertson-Schiff post-Newtonian parameter in the CFM metrics. This lends further support to the physical relevance of the …
In this thesis, we apply the AdS/CFT correspondence to space-times associated with extensions of General Relativity. We are particularly interested in calculating the transport coefficient, the shear viscosity, associated with the effective field theory whose dual is a black hole space-time in bulk. The correspondence also allows us to compute thermodynamic quantities, in which the entropy, plays a prominent role when the ratio between the shear viscosity-to-entropy density is taken. This ratio is conjectured to have a minimum value of $1/4π$, in natural units. The main results presented in th…
We holographically compute supercharge diffusion constants in supersymmetric field theories, dual to AdS black brane solutions of arbitrary dimension. This includes the extension of earlier work by Kontoudi and Policastro for D3-branes to M2- and M5-brane theories. We consider the case of vanishing chemical potential. In particular, we relate the product of a diffusion constant and the energy density to a universal result for the fermionic absorption cross section. This relation is analogous to the famous proof of universality of $η/ s$. We calculate the diffusion constants in two different wa…
A generalization of entropy to near-equilibrium phenomena is provided by the notion of a hydrodynamic entropy current. Recent advances in holography have lead to the formulation of fluid-gravity duality, a remarkable connection between the hydrodynamics of certain strongly coupled media and dynamics of higher dimensional black holes. This Letter introduces a correspondence between phenomenologically defined entropy currents in relativistic hydrodynamics and quasilocal horizons of near-equilibrium black objects in a dual gravitational description. A general formula is given, expressing the dive…
A family of deformed AdS$_5$-Schwarzschild black branes is here derived, employing the membrane paradigm of AdS/CFT. The solution of the Einstein-Hilbert action, with the Gibbons-Hawking term and a counter-term that eliminates eventual divergences, yields a partition function associated with the dual theory which allows the computation of the entropy, pressure and free energy, as state functions, in the canonical ensemble. AdS/CFT near-horizon methods are then implemented to compute the shear viscosity-to-entropy ratio, then restricting the range of the parameter that defines a family of defor…
Recent estimates for the electromagnetic fields produced in the early stages of non-central ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions indicate the presence of magnetic fields $B\sim \mathcal{O}(0.1-15\,m_π^2)$, where $m_π$ is the pion mass. It is then of special interest to study the effects of strong (Abelian) magnetic fields on the transport coefficients of strongly coupled non-Abelian plasmas, such as the quark-gluon plasma formed in heavy ion collisions. In this work we study the anisotropy in the shear viscosity induced by an external magnetic field in a strongly coupled $\mathcal{N} = 4$ S…
It has recently been shown that the Einstein equation can be derived by demanding a non-equilibrium entropy balance law dS = dQ/T + dS_i hold for all local acceleration horizons through each point in spacetime. The entropy change dS is proportional to the change in horizon area while dQ and T are the energy flux across the horizon and Unruh temperature seen by an accelerating observer just inside the horizon. The internal entropy production term dS_i is proportional to the squared shear of the horizon and the ratio of the proportionality constant to the area entropy density is \hbar/4π. Here w…
The ultraviolet completion of a large N QCD model requires introducing new degrees of freedom at certain scale so that the UV behavior may become asymptotically conformal with no Landau poles and no UV divergences of Wilson loops. These UV degrees of freedom are represented by certain anti-branes arranged on the blown-up sphere of a warped resolved conifold in a way that they are separated from the other set of branes that control the IR behavior of the theory. This separation of the branes and the anti-branes creates instability in the theory. Further complications arise from the curvature of…
The derivation of Lifshitz-invariant hydrodynamics from holography, presented in [arXiv:1508.02494] is generalized to arbitrary hyperscaling violating Lifshitz scaling theories with an unbroken U(1) symmetry. The hydrodynamics emerging is non-relativistic with scalar "forcing". By a redefinition of the pressure it becomes standard non-relativistic hydrodynamics in the presence of specific chemical potential for the mass current. The hydrodynamics is compatible with the scaling theory of Lifshitz invariance with hyperscaling violation. The bulk viscosity vanishes while the shear viscosity to en…
