We study transport of indirect excitons in GaAs/AlGaAs coupled quantum wells in linear lattices created by laterally modulated gate voltage. The localization-delocalization transition (LDT) for transport across the lattice was observed with reducing lattice amplitude or increasing exciton density. The exciton interaction energy at the transition is close to the lattice amplitude. These results are consistent with the model, which attributes the LDT to the interaction-induced percolation of the exciton gas through the external potential. We also discuss applications of the lattice potentials for estimating the strength of disorder and exciton interaction.
The electrostatics of two-dimensional (2D) lateral pn homojunctions considering the impact of electrostatic doping by means of two split bottom-gates are studied here. Analytical expressions are obtained from the solution of the 2D Poisson equation considering a depletion approximation. Straightforward analytical models for the electrostatic potential and the depletion width within both the dielectric and the 2D semiconductor are obtained for both the symmetrical and asymmetrical cases. In contrast to the case of devices with chemical doping, the obtained depletion width model of devices with …

Quantum point contacts (QPC) are fundamental building blocks of nanoelectronic circuits. For their emission dynamics as well as for interaction effects such as the 0.7-anomaly the details of the electrostatic potential are important, but the precise potential shapes are usually unknown. Here, we measure the one-dimensional subband spacings of various QPCs as a function of their conductance and compare our findings with models of lateral parabolic versus hard wall confinement. We find that a gate-defined QPC near pinch-off is compatible with the parabolic saddle point scenario. However, as the …
Charge carrier dynamics essentially determine the performance of various optoelectronic applications of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals. Among them, two-dimensional nanoplatelets provide new adjustment freedom for their unique core/crown heterostructure. Herein, we demonstrate that by fine-tuning the core size and the lateral quantum confinement, the charge carrier transfer rate from the crown to the core can be varied by one order of magnitude in CdSe/CdSeS core/alloy-crown nanoplatelets. In addition, the transfer can be affected by a carrier blocking mechanism, i.e., the filled carriers…

We propose and investigate the intrinsically thinnest transistor concept: a monolayer ballistic heterojunction bipolar transistor based on a lateral heterostructure of transition metal dichalcogenides. The device is intrinsically thinner than a Field Effect Transistor because it does not need a top or bottom gate, since transport is controlled by the electrochemical potential of the base electrode. As typical of bipolar transistors, the collector current undergoes a tenfold increase for each 60 mV increase of the base voltage over several orders of magnitude at room temperature, without sophis…
The two-dimensional (2D) logarithmic character of Coulomb interaction between charges and the resulting logarithmic confinement is a remarkable inherent property of high dielectric constant (high-$κ$) thin films with far reaching implications. Most and foremost, this is the charge Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition with the notable manifestation, low-temperature superinsulating topological phase. Here we show that the range of the confinement can be tuned by the external gate electrode and unravel a variety of electrostatic interactions in high-$κ$ films. We find that by reducing the d…
