Kundt spacetimes are of great importance in general relativity in 4 dimensions and have a number of topical applications in higher dimensions in the context of string theory. The degenerate Kundt spacetimes have many special and unique mathematical properties, including their invariant curvature structure and their holonomy structure. We provide a rigorous geometrical kinematical definition of the general Kundt spacetime in 4 dimensions; essentially a Kundt spacetime is defined as one admitting a null vector that is geodesic, expansion-free, shear-free and twist-free. A Kundt spacetime is said to be degenerate if the preferred kinematic and curvature null frames are all aligned. The degenerate Kundt spacetimes are the only spacetimes in 4 dimensions that are not $\mathcal{I}$-non-degenerate, so that they are not determined by their scalar polynomial curvature invariants. We first discuss the non-aligned Kundt spacetimes, and then turn our attention to the degenerate Kundt spacetimes. The degenerate Kundt spacetimes are classified algebraically by the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives in the aligned kinematic frame; as an example, we classify Riemann type D degenerate Kundt spacetimes in which $\nabla(Riem),\nabla^{(2)}(Riem)$ are also of type D. We discuss other local characteristics of the degenerate Kundt spacetimes. Finally, we discuss degenerate Kundt spacetimes in higher dimensions.
In recent literature there appeared conflicting claims about whether the Ozsváth-Robinson-Rózga family of type N electrovac spacetimes of the Kundt class with $Λ$ is complete. We show that indeed it is.
Memory effects in the exact Kundt wave spacetimes are shown to arise in the behaviour of geodesics in such spacetimes. The types of Kundt spacetimes we consider here are direct products of the form $H^2\times M(1,1)$ and $S^2\times M(1,1)$. Both geometries have constant scalar curvature. We consider a scenario in which initial velocities of the transverse geodesic coordinates are set to zero (before the arrival of the pulse) in a spacetime with non-vanishing background curvature. We look for changes in the separation between pairs of geodesics caused by the pulse. Any relative change observed …
We explore memory effects for novel Kundt wave spacetimes in the recently proposed Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld (EiBI) theory of gravity. First, we construct new, exact Kundt wave geometries in this theory for two different matter sources--(i) generic matter designed to satisfy the field equations as well as energy conditions, and (ii) electromagnetic field. For both sources we find that the EiBI theory parameter $κ$ couples only with the nonradiative part of the physical metric solution. Thereafter, we solve the geodesic and the geodesic deviation equations, in the above spacetimes with the…
The simple structure of doubly torqued vectors allows for a natural characterization of doubly twisted down to warped spacetimes, as well as Kundt spacetimes down to PP waves. For the first ones the vectors are timelike, for the others they are null. We also discuss some properties, and their connection to hypersurface orthogonal conformal Killing vectors, and null Killing vectors.
In this paper we consider a new approach to studying Kundt spacetimes through $G$-structures. We define a Lie-group $GN$ such that the $GN$-structures satisfying an integrability condition and an existence criterion, which we call Kundt structures, have the property that each metric belonging to the Kundt structure is automatically a Kundt spacetime. We find that the Lie algebra of infinitesimal automorphisms of such structures is given by a Lie algebra of nil-Killing vector fields. Lastly we characterize all left invariant Kundt structures on homogeneous manifolds.
The Gauss-Bonnet gravity is a special case of so-called Quadratic Gravity, which is an extension of Einstein's theory with additional terms in action that are quadratic combinations of the Riemann tensor and its contractions. These corrections are needed, for example, in perturbative quantum gravity. We consider the family of Kundt spacetimes, which is defined in a purely geometrical way by admitting a shear-free, twist-free and expansion-free null geodesic congruence. In particular, we focus on the Kundt solutions without gyratonic terms, and we investigate the constraints imposed by the Eins…
We systematically investigate the complete class of vacuum solutions in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity theory which belong to the Kundt family of non-expanding, shear-free and twist-free geometries (without gyratonic matter terms) in any dimension. The field equations are explicitly derived and simplified, and their solutions classified into three distinct subfamilies. Algebraic structures of the Weyl and Ricci curvature tensors are determined. The corresponding curvature scalars directly enter the invariant form of equation of geodesic deviation, enabling us to understand the specific loca…
A pseudo-Riemannian manifold is called CSI if all scalar polynomial invariants constructed from the curvature tensor and its covariant derivatives are constant. In the Lorentzian case, the CSI spacetimes have been studied extensively due to their application to gravity theories. It is conjectured that a CSI spacetime is either locally homogeneous or belongs to the subclass of degenerate Kundt metrics. Independent of this conjecture, any CSI spacetime can be related to a particular locally homogeneous degenerate Kundt metric sharing the same scalar polynomial curvature invariants. In this paper…
In our previous paper [Phys. Rev. D 89 (2014) 124029], cited as [1], we attempted to find Robinson-Trautman-type solutions of Einstein's equations representing gyratonic sources (matter field in the form of an aligned null fluid, or particles propagating with the speed of light, with an additional internal spin). Unfortunately, by making a mistake in our calculations, we came to the wrong conclusion that such solutions do not exist. We are now correcting this mistake. In fact, this allows us to explicitly find a new large family of gyratonic solutions in the Robinson-Trautman class of spacetim…
The Kundt conjecture states that a Lorentzian manifold of arbitrary dimension which is not characterized by its scalar polynomial curvature invariants (SPIs) allows for a non-twisting, non-shearing and non-expanding (in short, Kundt) null congruence of geodesics. The conjecture has been proven for dimensions 3 and 4. A necessary condition for a spacetime not to be characterized by SPIs is that all covariant derivatives of the Riemann tensor are of aligned type II or more special in the null alignment classification. In arbitrary dimensions, we prove that this property indeed requires the prese…
We study universal electromagnetic (test) fields, i.e., p-forms fields F that solve simultaneously (virtually) any generalized electrodynamics (containing arbitrary powers and derivatives of F in the field equations) in n spacetime dimensions. One of the main results is a sufficient condition: any null F that solves Maxwell's equations in a Kundt spacetime of aligned Weyl and traceless-Ricci type III is universal (in particular thus providing examples of p-form Galileons on curved Kundt backgrounds). In addition, a few examples in Kundt spacetimes of Weyl type II are presented. Some necessary …
We consider the class of locally boost isotropic spacetimes in arbitrary dimension. For any spacetime with boost isotropy, the corresponding curvature tensor and all of its covariant derivatives must be simultaneously of alignment type ${\bf D}$ relative to some common null frame. Such spacetimes are known as type ${\bf D}^k$ spacetimes and are contained within the subclass of degenerate Kundt spacetimes. Although, these spacetimes are $\mathcal{I}$-degenerate, it is possible to distinguish any two type ${\bf D}^k$ spacetimes, as the curvature tensor and its covariant derivatives can be charac…
We present a general solution of the coupled Einstein-Maxwell field equations (without the source charges and currents) in three spacetime dimensions. We also admit any value of the cosmological constant. The whole family of such $Λ$-electrovacuum local solutions splits into two distinct subclasses, namely the non-expanding Kundt class and the expanding Robinson-Trautman class. While the Kundt class only admits electromagnetic fields which are aligned along the geometrically privileged null congruence, the Robinson-Trautman class admits both aligned and also more complex non-aligned Maxwell fi…
Under a weak assumption of the existence of a geodesic null congruence, we present the general solution of the Einstein field equations in three dimensions with any value of the cosmological constant, admitting an aligned null matter field, and also gyratons (a matter field in the form of a null dust with an additional internal spin). The general local solution consists of the expanding Robinson-Trautman class and the non-expanding Kundt class. The gyratonic solutions reduce to spacetimes with a pure radiation matter field when the spin is set to zero. Without matter fields, we obtain new form…
Vacuum solutions of Lovelock gravity in the presence of a recurrent null vector field (a subset of Kundt spacetimes) are studied. We first discuss the general field equations, which constrain both the base space and the profile functions. While choosing a "generic" base space puts stronger constraints on the profile, in special cases there also exist solutions containing arbitrary functions (at least for certain values of the coupling constants). These and other properties (such as the pp-waves subclass and the overlap with VSI, CSI and universal spacetimes) are subsequently analyzed in more d…
We present weighted covariant derivatives and wave operators for perturbations of certain algebraically special Einstein spacetimes in arbitrary dimensions, under which the Teukolsky and related equations become weighted wave equations. We show that the higher dimensional generalization of the principal null directions are weighted conformal Killing vectors with respect to the modified covariant derivative. We also introduce a modified Laplace-de Rham-like operator acting on tensor-valued differential forms, and show that the wave-like equations are, at the linear level, appropriate projection…
We prove that higher dimensional Einstein spacetimes which possess a geodesic, non-degenerate double Weyl aligned null direction (WAND) $\ell$ must additionally possess a second double WAND (thus being of type D) if either: (a) the Weyl tensor obeys $C_{abc[d}\ell_{e]}\ell^c=0$ ($\LeftrightarrowΦ_{ij}=0$, i.e., the Weyl type is II(abd)); (b) $\ell$ is twistfree. Some comments about an extension of the Goldberg-Sachs theorem to six dimensions are also made.
