Map vertices of a graph to (not necessarily distinct) points of the plane so that two adjacent vertices are mapped at least a unit distance apart. The plane-width of a graph is the minimum diameter of the image of the vertex set over all such mappings. We establish a relation between the plane-width of a graph and its chromatic number, and connect it to other well-known areas, including the circular chromatic number and the problem of packing unit discs in the plane. We also investigate how plane-width behaves under various operations, such as homomorphism, disjoint union, complement, and the Cartesian product.
We define a special case of tree decompositions for planar graphs that respect a given embedding of the graph. We study the analogous width of the resulting decomposition we call the embedded-width of a plane graph. We show both upper bounds and lower bounds for the embedded-width of a graph in terms of its treewidth and describe a fixed parameter tractable algorithm to calculate the embedded-width of a plane graph. To do so, we give novel bounds on the size of matchings in planar graphs.
mim-width is a recent graph width measure that has seen applications in graph algorithms and problems related to propositional satisfiability. In this paper, we show linear lower bounds for the mim-width of strongly chordal split graphs, co-comparability graphs and circle graphs. This improves and refines lower bounds that were known before, some of them only conditionally. In the case of strongly chordal graphs not even a conditional lower bound was known before. All of the bounds given are optimal up to constants.
Clique-width is a well-known graph parameter. Many NP-hard graph problems admit polynomial-time solutions when restricted to graphs of bounded clique-width. The same holds for NLC-width. In this paper we study the behavior of clique-width and NLC-width under various graph operations and graph transformations. We give upper and lower bounds for the clique-width and NLC-width of the modified graphs in terms of the clique-width and NLC-width of the involved graphs.
Berwanger et al. show that for every graph $G$ of size $n$ and DAG-width $k$ there is a DAG decomposition of width $k$ and size $n^{O(k)}$. This gives a polynomial time algorithm for determining the DAG-width of a graph for any fixed $k$. However, if the DAG-width of the graphs from a class is not bounded, such algorithms become exponential. This raises the question whether we can always find a DAG decomposition of size polynomial in $n$ as it is the case for tree width and all generalisations of tree width similar to DAG-width. We show that there is an infinite class of graphs such that every…
We prove that every graph of rank-width $k$ is a pivot-minor of a graph of tree-width at most $2k$. We also prove that graphs of rank-width at most 1, equivalently distance-hereditary graphs, are exactly vertex-minors of trees, and graphs of linear rank-width at most 1 are precisely vertex-minors of paths. In addition, we show that bipartite graphs of rank-width at most 1 are exactly pivot-minors of trees and bipartite graphs of linear rank-width at most 1 are precisely pivot-minors of paths.
The maximum matching width is a graph width parameter that is defined on a branch-decomposition over the vertex set of a graph. In this short paper, we prove that the problem of computing the maximum matching width is NP-hard.
In the study of full bubble model graphs of bounded clique-width and bounded linear clique-width, we determined complete sets of forbidden induced subgraphs, that are minimal in the class of full bubble model graphs. In this note, we show that (almost all of) these graphs are minimal in the class of all graphs. As a corollary, we can give sets of minimal forbidden induced subgraphs for graphs of bounded clique-width and for graphs of bounded linear clique-width for arbitrary bounds.
The maximum matching width is a width-parameter that is defined on a branch-decomposition over the vertex set of a graph. The size of a maximum matching in the bipartite graph is used as a cut-function. In this paper, we characterize the graphs of maximum matching width at most 2 using the minor obstruction set. Also, we compute the exact value of the maximum matching width of a grid.
Clique-width is a complexity measure of directed as well as undirected graphs. Rank-width is an equivalent complexity measure for undirected graphs and has good algorithmic and structural properties. It is in particular related to the vertex-minor relation. We discuss an extension of the notion of rank-width to edge-colored graphs. A C-colored graph is a graph where the arcs are colored with colors from the set C. There is not a natural notion of rank-width for C-colored graphs. We define two notions of rank-width for them, both based on a coding of C-colored graphs by edge-colored graphs wher…
The celebrated theorem of Robertson and Seymour states that in the family of minor-closed graph classes, there is a unique minimal class of graphs of unbounded tree-width, namely, the class of planar graphs. In the case of tree-width, the restriction to minor-closed classes is justified by the fact that the tree-width of a graph is never smaller than the tree-width of any of its minors. This, however, is not the case with respect to clique-width, as the clique-width of a graph can be (much) smaller than the clique-width of its minor. On the other hand, the clique-width of a graph is never smal…
The new graph parameter twin-width, introduced by Bonnet, Kim, Thomass e and Watrigant in 2020, allows for an FPT algorithm for testing all FO properties of graphs. This makes classes of efficiently bounded twin-width attractive from the algorithmic point of view. In particular, classes of efficiently bounded twin-width include proper interval graphs, and (as digraphs) posets of width k. Inspired by an existing generalization of interval graphs into so-called k-thin graphs, we define a new class of proper k-mixed-thin graphs which largely generalizes proper interval graphs. We prove that prope…

Boolean-width is a recently introduced graph parameter. Many problems are fixed parameter tractable when parametrized by boolean-width, for instance "Minimum Weighted Dominating Set" (MWDS) problem can be solved in $O^*(2^{3k})$ time given a boolean-decomposition of width $k$, hence for all graph classes where a boolean-decomposition of width $O(\log n)$ can be found in polynomial time, MWDS can be solved in polynomial time. We study graph classes having boolean-width $O(\log n)$ and problems solvable in $O^*(2^{O(k)})$, combining these two results to design polynomial algorithms. We show that…
The GG-width of a class of graphs GG is defined as follows. A graph G has GG-width k if there are k independent sets N1,...,Nk in G such that G can be embedded into a graph H in GG such that for every edge e in H which is not an edge in G, there exists an i such that both endpoints of e are in Ni. For the class TH of threshold graphs we show that TH-width is NP-complete and we present fixed-parameter algorithms. We also show that for each k, graphs of TH-width at most k are characterized by a finite collection of forbidden induced subgraphs.
We give an algorithm that, for every fixed k, decides isomorphism of graphs of rank width at most k in polynomial time. As the clique width of a graph is bounded in terms of its rank width, we also obtain a polynomial time isomorphism test for graph classes of bounded clique width.
If a graph has no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ or $H_2$ then it is said to be ($H_1,H_2$)-free. Dabrowski and Paulusma found 13 open cases for the question whether the clique-width of ($H_1,H_2$)-free graphs is bounded. One of them is the class of ($S_{1,2,2}$,triangle)-free graphs. In this paper we show that these graphs have bounded clique-width. Thus, also ($P_1+2P_2$,triangle)-free graphs have bounded clique-width which solves another open problem of Dabrowski and Paulusma. Meanwhile we were informed by Paulusma that in December 2015, Dabrowski, Dross and Paulusma showed that ($S_{…
Clique-width is a graph invariant that has been widely studied in combinatorics and computer science. However, computing the clique-width of a graph is an intricate problem, the exact clique-width is not known even for very small graphs. We present a new method for computing the clique-width of graphs based on an encoding to propositional satisfiability (SAT) which is then evaluated by a SAT solver. Our encoding is based on a reformulation of clique-width in terms of partitions that utilizes an efficient encoding of cardinality constraints. Our SAT-based method is the first to discover the exa…
In this paper we compare and illustrate the algorithmic use of graphs of bounded tree-width and graphs of bounded clique-width. For this purpose we give polynomial time algorithms for computing the four basic graph parameters independence number, clique number, chromatic number, and clique covering number on a given tree structure of graphs of bounded tree-width and graphs of bounded clique-width in polynomial time. We also present linear time algorithms for computing the latter four basic graph parameters on trees, i.e. graphs of tree-width 1, and on co-graphs, i.e. graphs of clique-width at …
A graph is $H$-free if it has no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$. We continue a study into the boundedness of clique-width of subclasses of perfect graphs. We identify five new classes of $H$-free split graphs whose clique-width is bounded. Our main result, obtained by combining new and known results, provides a classification of all but two stubborn cases, that is, with two potential exceptions we determine all graphs $H$ for which the class of $H$-free split graphs has bounded clique-width.
A connected graph G is called matching covered if every edge of G is contained in a perfect matching. Perfect matching width is a width parameter for matching covered graphs based on a branch decomposition. It was introduced by Norine and intended as a tool for the structural study of matching covered graphs, especially in the context of Pfaffian orientations. Norine conjectured that graphs of high perfect matching width would contain a large grid as a matching minor, similar to the result on treewidth by Robertson and Seymour. In this paper we obtain the first results on perfect matching widt…
Bonnet, Kim, Thomassé, and Watrigant (2020) introduced the twin-width of a graph. We show that the twin-width of an $n$-vertex graph is less than $(n+\sqrt{n\ln n}+\sqrt{n}+2\ln n)/2$, and the twin-width of an $m$-edge graph for a positive $m$ is less than $\sqrt{3m}+ m^{1/4} \sqrt{\ln m} / (4\cdot 3^{1/4}) + 3m^{1/4} / 2$. Conference graphs of order $n$ (when such graphs exist) have twin-width at least $(n-1)/2$, and we show that Paley graphs achieve this lower bound. We also show that the twin-width of the Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$ with $1/n\leq p=p(n)\leq 1/2$ is larger than $2p(1-p…
We prove that every sufficiently big 6-connected graph of bounded tree-width either has a K_6 minor, or has a vertex whose deletion makes the graph planar. This is a step toward proving that the same conclusion holds for all sufficiently big 6-connected graphs. Jorgensen conjectured that it holds for all 6-connected graphs.
The connected tree-width of a graph is the minimum width of a tree-decomposition whose parts induce connected subgraphs. Long cycles are examples of graphs that have small tree-width but large connected tree-width. We show that a graph has small connected tree-width if and only if it has small tree-width and contains no long geodesic cycle. We further prove a connected analogue of the duality theorem for tree-width: a finite graph has small connected tree-width if and only if it has no bramble whose connected covers are all large. Both these results are qualitative: the bounds are good but not…
A graph is $H$-free if it has no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$. Brandstädt, Engelfriet, Le and Lozin proved that the class of chordal graphs with independence number at most 3 has unbounded clique-width. Brandstädt, Le and Mosca erroneously claimed that the gem and the co-gem are the only two 1-vertex $P_4$-extensions $H$ for which the class of $H$-free chordal graphs has bounded clique-width. In fact we prove that bull-free chordal and co-chair-free chordal graphs have clique-width at most 3 and 4, respectively. In particular, we find four new classes of $H$-free chordal graphs of bounde…
In this paper we introduce the linear clique-width, linear NLC-width, neighbourhood-width, and linear rank-width for directed graphs. We compare these parameters with each other as well as with the previously defined parameters directed path-width and directed cut-width. It turns out that the parameters directed linear clique-width, directed linear NLC-width, directed neighbourhood-width, and directed linear rank-width are equivalent in that sense, that all of these parameters can be upper bounded by each of the others. For the restriction to digraphs of bounded vertex degree directed path-wid…
For their famous algorithm for the disjoint paths problem, Robertson and Seymour proved that there is a function $f$ such that if the tree-width of a graph $G$ with $k$ pairs of terminals is at least $f(k)$, then $G$ contains a solution-irrelevant vertex (Graph Minors. XXII., JCTB 2012). We give a single-exponential lower bound on $f$. This bound even holds for planar graphs.
Graph minors are a primary tool in understanding the structure of undirected graphs, with many conceptual and algorithmic implications. We propose new variants of \emph{directed graph minors} and \emph{directed graph embeddings}, by modifying familiar definitions. For the class of 2-terminal directed acyclic graphs (TDAGs) our two definitions coincide, and the class is closed under both operations. The usefulness of our directed minor operations is demonstrated by characterizing all TDAGs with serial-parallel width at most $k$; a class of networks known to guarantee bounded negative externalit…
Clique-width is an important graph parameter due to its algorithmic and structural properties. A graph class is hereditary if it can be characterized by a (not necessarily finite) set ${\cal H}$ of forbidden induced subgraphs. We initiate a systematic study into the boundedness of clique-width of hereditary graph classes closed under complementation. First, we extend the known classification for the $|{\cal H}|=1$ case by classifying the boundedness of clique-width for every set ${\cal H}$ of self-complementary graphs. We then completely settle the $|{\cal H}|=2$ case. In particular, we determ…
We prove that for every $t\in \mathbb{N}$ there is a constant $γ_t$ such that every graph with twin-width at most $t$ and clique number $ω$ has chromatic number bounded by $2^{γ_t \log^{4t+3} ω}$. In other words, we prove that graph classes of bounded twin-width are quasi-polynomially $χ$-bounded. This provides a significant step towards resolving the question of Bonnet et al. [ICALP 2021] about whether they are polynomially $χ$-bounded.
Given two graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, a graph $G$ is $(H_1,H_2)$-free if it contains no subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ or $H_2$. We continue a recent study into the clique-width of $(H_1,H_2)$-free graphs and present three new classes of $(H_1,H_2)$-free graphs of bounded clique-width and one of unbounded clique-width. The four new graph classes have in common that one of their two forbidden induced subgraphs is the diamond (the graph obtained from a clique on four vertices by deleting one edge). To prove boundedness of clique-width for the first three cases we develop a technique based on bounding …
A complete graph is the graph in which every two vertices are adjacent. For a graph $G=(V,E)$, the complete width of $G$ is the minimum $k$ such that there exist $k$ independent sets $\mathtt{N}_i\subseteq V$, $1\le i\le k$, such that the graph $G'$ obtained from $G$ by adding some new edges between certain vertices inside the sets $\mathtt{N}_i$, $1\le i\le k$, is a complete graph. The complete width problem is to decide whether the complete width of a given graph is at most $k$ or not. In this paper we study the complete width problem. We show that the complete width problem is NP-complete o…
We prove that a connected graph has linear rank-width 1 if and only if it is a distance-hereditary graph and its split decomposition tree is a path. An immediate consequence is that one can decide in linear time whether a graph has linear rank-width at most 1, and give an obstruction if not. Other immediate consequences are several characterisations of graphs of linear rank-width 1. In particular a connected graph has linear rank-width 1 if and only if it is locally equivalent to a caterpillar if and only if it is a vertex-minor of a path [O-joung Kwon and Sang-il Oum, Graphs of small rank-wid…
We prove that the tree-width of graphs in a hereditary class defined by a finite set $F$ of forbidden induced subgraphs is bounded if and only if $F$ includes a complete graph, a complete bipartite graph, a tripod (a forest in which every connected component has at most 3 leaves) and the line graph of a tripod.
A large number of NP-hard graph problems become polynomial-time solvable on graph classes where the mim-width is bounded and quickly computable. Hence, when solving such problems on special graph classes, it is helpful to know whether the graph class under consideration has bounded mim-width. We first extend the toolkit for proving (un)boundedness of mim-width of graph classes. This enables us to initiate a systematic study into bounding mim-width from the perspective of hereditary graph classes. For a given graph $H$, the class of $H$-free graphs has bounded mim-width if and only if it has bo…

If a graph has no induced subgraph isomorphic to any graph in a finite family $\{H_1,\ldots,H_p\}$, it is said to be $(H_1,\ldots,H_p)$-free. The class of $H$-free graphs has bounded clique-width if and only if $H$ is an induced subgraph of the 4-vertex path $P_4$. We study the (un)boundedness of the clique-width of graph classes defined by two forbidden induced subgraphs $H_1$ and $H_2$. Prior to our study it was not known whether the number of open cases was finite. We provide a positive answer to this question. To reduce the number of open cases we determine new graph classes of bounded cli…
We prove that every class of graphs $\mathscr C$ that is monadically stable and has bounded twin-width can be transduced from some class with bounded sparse twin-width. This generalizes analogous results for classes of bounded linear cliquewidth and of bounded cliquewidth. It also implies that monadically stable classes of bounded twin-widthare linearly $χ$-bounded.
We introduce a new parameter, called stretch-width, that we show sits strictly between clique-width and twin-width. Unlike the reduced parameters [BKW '22], planar graphs and polynomial subdivisions do not have bounded stretch-width. This leaves open the possibility of efficient algorithms for a broad fragment of problems within Monadic Second-Order (MSO) logic on graphs of bounded stretch-width. In this direction, we prove that graphs of bounded maximum degree and bounded stretch-width have at most logarithmic treewidth. As a consequence, in classes of bounded stretch-width, Maximum Independe…
Twin-width is a newly introduced graph width parameter that aims at generalizing a wide range of "nicely structured" graph classes. In this work, we focus on obtaining good bounds on twin-width $\text{tww}(G)$ for graphs $G$ from a number of classic graph classes. We prove the following: - $\text{tww}(G) \leq 3\cdot 2^{\text{tw}(G)-1}$, where $\text{tw}(G)$ is the treewidth of $G$, - $\text{tww}(G) \leq \max(4\text{bw}(G),\frac{9}{2}\text{bw}(G)-3)$ for a planar graph $G$ with $\text{bw}(G) \geq 2$, where $\text{bw}(G)$ is the branchwidth of $G$, - $\text{tww}(G) \leq 183$ for a planar graph $…
Let $P$ be a graph with a vertex $v$ such that $P\backslash v$ is a forest, and let $Q$ be an outerplanar graph. We prove that there exists a number $p=p(P,Q)$ such that every 2-connected graph of path-width at least $p$ has a minor isomorphic to $P$ or $Q$. This result answers a question of Seymour and implies a conjecture of Marshall and Wood. The proof is based on a new property of tree-decompositions.
Tree-width and its linear variant path-width play a central role for the graph minor relation. In particular, Robertson and Seymour (1983) proved that for every tree~$T$, the class of graphs that do not contain $T$ as a minor has bounded path-width. For the pivot-minor relation, rank-width and linear rank-width take over the role from tree-width and path-width. As such, it is natural to examine if for every tree~$T$, the class of graphs that do not contain $T$ as a pivot-minor has bounded linear rank-width. We first prove that this statement is false whenever $T$ is a tree that is not a caterp…
We generalize the family of $(σ, ρ)$-problems and locally checkable vertex partition problems to their distance versions, which naturally captures well-known problems such as distance-$r$ dominating set and distance-$r$ independent set. We show that these distance problems are XP parameterized by the structural parameter mim-width, and hence polynomial on graph classes where mim-width is bounded and quickly computable, such as $k$-trapezoid graphs, Dilworth $k$-graphs, (circular) permutation graphs, interval graphs and their complements, convex graphs and their complements, $k$-polygon graphs,…
Given two graphs $G$ and $H$, we say that $G$ contains $H$ as an induced minor if a graph isomorphic to $H$ can be obtained from $G$ by a sequence of vertex deletions and edge contractions. We study the complexity of Graph Isomorphism on graphs that exclude a fixed graph as an induced minor. More precisely, we determine for every graph $H$ that Graph Isomorphism is polynomial-time solvable on $H$-induced-minor-free graphs or that it is GI-complete. Additionally, we classify those graphs $H$ for which $H$-induced-minor-free graphs have bounded clique-width. These two results complement similar …
We discover new hereditary classes of graphs that are minimal (with respect to set inclusion) of unbounded clique-width. The new examples include split permutation graphs and bichain graphs. Each of these classes is characterised by a finite list of minimal forbidden induced subgraphs. These, therefore, disprove a conjecture due to Daligault, Rao and Thomasse from 2010 claiming that all such minimal classes must be defined by infinitely many forbidden induced subgraphs. In the same paper, Daligault, Rao and Thomasse make another conjecture that every hereditary class of unbounded clique-width …
We provide a polynomial-time algorithm for b-Coloring on graphs of constant clique-width. This unifies and extends nearly all previously known polynomial time results on graph classes, and answers open questions posed by Campos and Silva [Algorithmica, 2018] and Bonomo et al. [Graphs Combin., 2009]. This constitutes the first result concerning structural parameterizations of this problem. We show that the problem is FPT when parameterized by the vertex cover number on general graphs, and on chordal graphs when parameterized by the number of colors. Additionally, we observe that our algorithm f…
