The cosmological constant induced by quantum fluctuation of the graviton on a given background is considered as a tool for building a spectrum of different geometries. In particular, we apply the method to the Schwarzschild background with positive and negative mass parameter. In this way, we put on the same level of comparison the related naked singularity (-M) and the positive mass wormhole. We use the Wheeler-De Witt equation as a basic equation to perform such an analysis regarded as a Sturm-Liouville problem . The cosmological constant is considered as the associated eigenvalue. The used method to study such a problem is a variational approach with Gaussian trial wave functionals. We approximate the equation to one loop in a Schwarzschild background. A zeta function regularization is involved to handle with divergences. The regularization is closely related to the subtraction procedure appearing in the computation of Casimir energy in a curved background. A renormalization procedure is introduced to remove the infinities together with a renormalization group equation.
We prove that $D\geq 5$ dimensional stationary, non-static near horizon geometries with (D-3) rotational symmetries subject to the vacuum Einstein equations including a cosmological constant cannot have toroidal horizon topology. In D=4 dimensions the same result is obtained under the assumption of a non-negative cosmological constant.
We investigate five dimensional Einstein spaces in warped geometries from the point of view of the four dimensional physically relevant Robertson-Walker-Friedman cosmological metric and the Schwarzschild metric. We show that a four-dimensional cosmology with a closed spacelike section and a cosmological constant can be imbedded into five-dimensional flat space-time.
We investigate the causal relations in the space of states of almost commutative Lorentzian geometries. We fully describe the causal structure of a simple model based on the algebra $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^{1,1}) \otimes M_2(\mathbb{C})$, which has a non-trivial space of internal degrees of freedom. It turns out that the causality condition imposes restrictions on the motion in the internal space. Moreover, we show that the requirement of causality favours a unitary evolution in the internal space.
We consider the notion of cosmological symmetry, i.e., spatial homogeneity and isotropy, in the field of teleparallel gravity and geometry, and provide a complete classification of all homogeneous and isotropic teleparallel geometries. We explicitly construct these geometries by independently employing three different methods, and prove that all of them lead to the same class of geometries. Further, we derive their properties, such as the torsion tensor and its irreducible decomposition, as well as the transformation behavior under change of the time coordinate, and derive the most general cos…
The classical and continuum limit of a quantum gravitational setting could lead, at mesoscopic regimes, to a very different notion of geometry w.r.t. the pseudo-Riemannian one of special and general relativity. A possible way to characterize this modified space-time notion is by a momentum dependent metric, in such a way that particles with different energies could probe different spacetimes. Indeed, doubly special relativity theories, deforming the special relativistic kinematics while maintaining a relativity principle, have been understood within a geometrical context, by considering a curv…
We briefly review the problem of generating cosmological flows of matter in GR (the genesis of universes), analyze models' shortcomings and their basic assumptions yet to be justified in physical cosmology. We propose a paradigm of cosmogenesis based on the class of spherically symmetric solutions with {\it integrable} singularity $r=0$. They allow for geodesically complete geometries of black/white holes, which may comprise space-time regions with properties of cosmological flows.
We consider stationary extremal black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations with a negative cosmological constant in four dimensions. We determine all non-static axisymmetric near-horizon geometries (with non-toroidal horizon topology) and all static near-horizon geometries for black holes of this kind. This allows us to deduce that the most general near-horizon geometry of an asymptotically globally AdS(4) rotating extremal black hole, is the near-horizon limit of extremal Kerr-Newman-AdS(4). We also identify the subset of near-horizon geometries which are supersymmetric. Finally, …
Static vacuum near horizon geometries are solutions $(M,g,X)$ of a certain quasi-Einstein equation on a closed manifold $M$, where $g$ is a Riemannian metric and $X$ is a closed 1-form. It is known that when the cosmological constant vanishes, there is rigidity: $X$ vanishes and consequently $g$ is Ricci flat. We study this form of rigidity for all signs of the cosmological constant. It has been asserted that this rigidity also holds when the cosmological constant is negative, but we exhibit a counter-example. We show that for negative cosmological constant if $X$ does not vanish identically, …
We study cosmological solutions of Einstein gravity with a positive cosmological constant in diverse dimensions. These include big-bang models that re-collapse, big-bang models that approach de Sitter acceleration at late times, and bounce models that are both past and future asymptotically de Sitter. The re-collapsing and the bounce geometries are all tall in the sense that entire spatial slices become visible to a comoving observer before the end of conformal time, while the accelerating big-bang geometries can be either short or tall. We consider the interpretation of these cosmological sol…
In this study, cosmological models with perfect fluid and a gravitational framework f(Q) will be examined. In this modified theory of gravity, the gravitational force has the form f(Q), where Q stands for the non-metricity scalar. I create two bouncing cosmological models, one in which the Lagrangian f(Q) is assumed to have a linear dependence on Q and the other in which it has a polynomial functional form. It has been discovered that the parameters of the individual models largely determine how they will behave. The resulting models' equation of state (EoS) parameter captures the universe's i…
We construct general anisotropic cosmological scenarios governed by an $f(R)$ gravitational sector. Focusing then on Kantowski-Sachs geometries in the case of $R^n$-gravity, and modelling the matter content as a perfect fluid, we perform a detailed phase-space analysis. We find that at late times the universe can result to a state of accelerating expansion, and additionally, for a particular $n$-range ($2<n<3$) it exhibits phantom behavior. Furthermore, isotropization has been achieved independently of the initial anisotropy degree, showing in a natural way why the observable universe is so ho…
Since microscopic velocity diffusion can be incorporated into general relativity in a consistent way, we study cosmological background solutions when the diffusion phenomena takes place in an expanding universe. Our focus here relies on the nature of the diffusion coefficient $σ$ which measures the magnitude of such transport phenomena. We test dynamics where $σ$ has a phenomenological dependence on the scale factor, the matter density, the dark energy and the expansion rate.
A key challenge for many quantum gravity approaches is to construct states that describe smooth geometries on large scales. Here we define a family of $(2+1)$-dimensional quantum gravity states which arise from curvature excitations concentrated at point like defects and describe homogeneously curved geometries on large scales. These states represent therefore vacua for three-dimensional gravity with different values of the cosmological constant. They can be described by an anomaly-free first class constraint algebra quantized on one and the same Hilbert space for different values of the cosmo…
We establish a class of area-angular momentum-charge inequalities satisfied by stable marginally outer trapped surfaces in 5-dimensional minimal supergravity which admit a $U(1)^2$ symmetry. A novel feature is the fact that such surfaces can have the nontrivial topologies $S^1 \times S^2$ and $L(p,q)$. In addition to two angular momenta, they may be characterized by `dipole charge' as well as electric charge. We show that the unique geometries which saturate the inequalities are the horizon geometries corresponding to extreme black hole solutions. Analogous inequalities which also include cont…
We study an alternative geometrical approach on the problem of classical cosmological singularity. It is based on a generalized function $f (x, y) = x^{2} + y^{2} = (1 - z)z^{n}$ which consists of a cusped coupled isosurface. Such a geometry is computed and discussed into the context of Friedmann singularity-free cosmology where a pre-big bang scenario is considered. Assuming that the mechanism of cusp formation is described by non-linear oscillations of a pre-big bang extended very high energy density field ($> 3 \times 10^{94} kg/m^{3} $), we show that the action under the gravitational fiel…
We introduce new CosmoEJS modules to improve the investigation of the consequences of constraints on the parameter values of cosmological models. We use CosmoMC to fit dark energy models and modified gravity models to recent data from the cosmic microwave background measurements of the Planck satellite, baryon acoustic oscillations, supernovae type Ia, Hubble Parameter H(z) measurements, and redshift space distortions. While the results are in agreement with previous constraints for these models, here, we add an investigation into the statistical fits with CosmoEJS, an interactive Java package…
Finsler geometry is an important extension of Riemann geometry, in which to each point of the spacetime manifold an arbitrary internal variable is associated. Interesting Finsler geometries, with many physical applications, are the Randers and Kropina type geometries, respectively. A subclass of Finsler geometries is represented by the osculating Finsler spaces, in which the internal variable is a function of the base manifold coordinates only. In an osculating Finsler geometry one introduces the Barthel connection, which has the remarkable property that it is the Levi-Civita connection of a R…
Using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem, we compute and examine the deflection angle of light rays by rotating regular black holes with a cosmological constant. By the help of optical geometries, we first deal with the Hayward black holes with cosmological contributions. Then, we reconsider the study of the Bardeen solutions. We inspect the cosmological constant effect on the deflection angle of light rays. Concretely, we find extra cosmological correction terms generalizing certain obtained findings. Using graphical analysis, we provide a comparative discussion with respect to the Kerr solutions. The …
We solve massive gravity field equations in the framework of locally homogenous and vanishing scalar invariant (VSI) Lorentzian spacetimes, which in three dimensions are the building blocks of constant scalar invariant (CSI) spacetimes. At first, we provide an exhaustive list of all Lorentzian three-dimensional homogeneous spaces and then we determine the Petrov type of the relevant curvature tensors. Among these geometries we determine for which values of their structure constants they are solutions of the field equations of massive gravity theories with cosmological constant. The homogeneous…
We find broad classes of solutions to the field equations for d-dimensional gravity coupled to an antisymmetric tensor of arbitrary rank and a scalar field with non-vanishing potential. Our construction generates these configurations from the solution of a single nonlinear ordinary differential equation, whose form depends on the scalar potential. For an exponential potential we find solutions corresponding to brane geometries, generalizing the black p-branes and S-branes known for the case of vanishing potential. These geometries are singular at the origin with up to two (regular) horizons. T…
We analyze the leading terms of the spectral action for a model of noncommutative geometry, which is a product of $4$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with a two-point space exploring the previously neglected case when the metrics over each sheet are different. Assuming the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker type of the metric for both sheets we obtain the action, which in addition to the the usual cosmological constant terms and the Einstein-Hilbert term involves a nonlinear interaction term. We study qualitative picture of potential consequences of such term in the basic cosmological models.
$Λ^μ_ν$-geometry is a geometry with a variable cosmological term described by a second-rank symmetric tensor $Λ^μ_ν$ whose asymptotics are Einstein cosmological term $Λδ^μ_ν$ at the origin and $λδ^μ_ν$ at infinity (with $λ< Λ$). It corresponds to extension of the algebraic structure of the Einstein cosmological term $Λδ^μ_ν$ in such a way that a scalar $Λ$ describing vacuum energy density as $ρ_{vac}=8πG Λ$ (with $ρ_{vac}$=const by virtue of the Bianchi identities), becomes explicite related to the appropriate component, $Λ^0_0$, of an appropriate stress-energy tensor, $T^μ_ν=8πGΛ^μ_ν$ whose v…
We consider the unified bulk viscous scenarios and constrain them using the Cosmic Microwave Background observations from Planck 2018 and the Pantheon sample from Type Ia Supernovae. Then we generate the luminosity distance measurements from ${\cal O}(10^3)$ mock Gravitational Wave Standard Sirens (GWSS) events for the proposed Einstein Telescope. We then combine these mock luminosity distance measurements from the GWSS with the current cosmological probes in order to forecast how the mock GWSS data could be effective in constraining these bulk viscous scenarios. Our results show that a non-ze…
We prove that every solution to Einstein's equations with possibly non-zero cosmological constant that is foliated by non-expanding null surfaces transversal to a single non-expanding null surface belongs to family of the near (extremal) horizon geometries. Our results are local, hold in a neighborhood of the single non-expanding null surface.
We detail a novel theoretical prediction that a geometric torsion model for scalar field dark matter could lead to oscillations, on readily probeable timescales, in the time evolution of cosmological redshifts of astronomical sources with qualitatively distinct behavior at different redshift scales (larger or smaller than z ~ 0.1). We present an analysis of extant spectroscopy data from the Australian Dark Energy Survey (OzDES) to assess whether such signals are present across a wide array of cosmological sources and baseline redshifts on the six-year timescale of OzDES. While a simple Fourier…
Recently, the variation of the Planck mass in the General Relativistic Einstein-Hilbert action was proposed as a self-tuning mechanism of the cosmological constant, preventing Standard Model vacuum energy from freely gravitating and enabling an estimation of the magnitude of its observed value. We explore here new aspects of this proposal. We first develop an equivalent Einstein-frame formalism to the current Jordan-frame formulation of the mechanism and use this to highlight similarities and differences of self-tuning to the sequestering mechanism. We then show how with an extension of the lo…
Applying the cosmological principle to Finsler spacetimes, we identify the Lie Algebra of symmetry generators of spatially homogeneous and isotropic Finsler geometries, thus generalising Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker geometry. In particular, we find the most general spatially homogeneous and isotropic Berwald spacetimes, which are Finsler spacetimes that can be regarded as closest to pseudo-Riemannian geometry. They are defined by a Finsler Lagrangian built from a zero-homogeneous function on the tangent bundle, which encodes the velocity dependence of the Finsler Lagrangian in a very sp…
In loop quantum cosmology, Friedmann-LeMaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) space-times arise as well-defined approximations to specific \emph{quantum} geometries. We initiate the development of a quantum theory of test scalar fields on these quantum geometries. Emphasis is on the new conceptual ingredients required in the transition from classical space-time backgrounds to quantum space-times. These include a `relational time' a la Leibnitz, the emergence of the Hamiltonian operator of the test field from the quantum constraint equation, and ramifications of the quantum fluctuations of the backgrou…
In light of the recent observational data coming from the sky we have two significant directions in the field of theoretical cosmology recently. First, we are now able to make use of present observations, such as the Planck and BICEP2 data, to examine theoretical predictions from the standard inflationary $Λ$CDM which were made decades of years ago. Second, we can search for new cosmological signatures as a way to explore physics beyond the standard cosmic paradigm. In particular, a subset of early universe models admit a nonsingular bouncing solution that attempts to address the issue of the …
We investigate, in the framework of (2+1) dimensional gravity, stationary, rotationally symmetric gravitational sources of the perfect fluid type, embedded in a space of arbitrary cosmological constant. We show that the matching conditions between the interior and exterior geometries imply restrictions on the physical parameters of the solutions. In particular, imposing finite sources and absence of closed timelike curves privileges negative values of the cosmological constant, yielding exterior vacuum geometries of rotating black hole type. In the special case of static sources, we prove the …
The geodesic deviation equation (`GDE') provides an elegant tool to investigate the timelike, null and spacelike structure of spacetime geometries. Here we employ the GDE to review these structures within the Friedmann--Lema\^ıtre--Robertson--Walker (`FLRW') models, where we assume the sources to be given by a non-interacting mixture of incoherent matter and radiation, and we also take a non-zero cosmological constant into account. For each causal case we present examples of solutions to the GDE and we discuss the interpretation of the related first integrals. The de Sitter spacetime geometry …
We bring forward a generalized pressure dark energy (GPDE) model to explore the evolution of the universe. This model has covered three common pressure parameterization types and can be reconstructed as quintessence and phantom scalar fields, respectively. We adopt the cosmic chronometer (CC) datasets to constrain the parameters. The results show that the inferred late-universe parameters of the GPDE model are (within $1σ$): The present value of Hubble constant $H_{0}=(72.30^{+1.26}_{-1.37})$km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$; Matter density parameter $Ω_{\text{m0}}=0.302^{+0.046}_{-0.047}$, and the unive…
The massless Dirac equation is studied in curved spacetime on the (2+1)-dimensional graphene sheet in time-dependent geometries. Emergent pseudogauge fields are found both in the adiabatic regime and, for high-frequency periodic geometries, in the nonadiabatic regime for a generic Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker metric in Fermi normal coordinates. The former extends the conventionally understood homogeneous pseudogauge field to include weak temporal inhomogeneities. The latter, through the usage of Floquet theory, represents a new class of emergent pseudogauge field and is argued to potent…
We use the SnIa Gold dataset to compare LCDM with 10 representative parametrizations of the recent Hubble expansion history $H(z)$. For the comparison we use two statistical tests; the usual $χ_{min}^2$ which is insensitive to the parametrization number of parameters, and a statistic we call the p-test which depends on both the value of $χ_{min}^2$ and the number $n$ of the parametrization parameters. The p-test measures the confidence level to which the parameter values corresponding to LCDM are excluded from the viewpoint of the parametrization tested. For example, for a linear equation of s…
We construct general anisotropic cosmological scenarios governed by an $f(R)=R^n$ gravitational sector. Focusing then on some specific geometries, and modelling the matter content as a perfect fluid, we perform a phase-space analysis. We analyze the possibility of accelerating expansion at late times, and additionally, we determine conditions for the parameter $n$ for the existence of phantom behavior, contracting solutions as well as of cyclic cosmology. Furthermore, we analyze if the universe evolves towards the future isotropization without relying on a cosmic no-hair theorem. Our results i…
Astrophysical observations have put unprecedentedly tight constraints on cosmological theories. The $Λ$CDM model, mathematically simple and fits observational data-sets well, is preferred for explaining the behavior of universe. But many basic features of the dark sectors are still unknown, which leaves rooms for various nonstandard cosmological hypotheses. As the pressure of cosmological constant dark energy is unvarying, ignoring contributions from radiation and curvature terms at low redshift, the effective pressure keeps constant. In this paper, we propose two parametric models for non-con…
The cosmological constant $Λ$ modifies certain properties of large astrophysical rotating configurations with ellipsoidal geometries, provided the objects are not too compact. Assuming an equilibrium configuration and so using the tensor virial equation with $Λ$ we explore several equilibrium properties of homogeneous rotating ellipsoids. One shows that the bifurcation point, which in the oblate case distinguishes the Maclaurin ellipsoid from the Jacobi ellipsoid, is sensitive to the cosmological constant. Adding to that, the cosmological constant allows triaxial configurations of equilibrium …
Based on General Relativity (GR) we consider two different cosmological scenarios in where reconstruct the energy exchange (Q) between cold dark matter (DM) fluid and dark energy (DE) fluid, which is modelled with a DE varying equation of state (EoS) parameter ω. We here investigate the main cosmological effects on the growth rate of matter density perturbations (fσ8), on the effective Hubble friction term (Heff ), on the effective Newton constant (Geff ) and on the growth index of the linear matter fluctuations (γ). Our study demonstrates that in the coupled models the evolution of these quan…
A cosmological approach based on considering a cosmic background with non-zero torsion is shown in order to give an option of explaining a possible phantom evolution, not ruled out according to the current observational data. We revise some aspects of the formal schemes on torsion and, according them, we develop a formalism which can be an interesting alternative for exploring Cosmology.
