Based on General Relativity (GR) we consider two different cosmological scenarios in where reconstruct the energy exchange (Q) between cold dark matter (DM) fluid and dark energy (DE) fluid, which is modelled with a DE varying equation of state (EoS) parameter ω. We here investigate the main cosmological effects on the growth rate of matter density perturbations (fσ8), on the effective Hubble friction term (Heff ), on the effective Newton constant (Geff ) and on the growth index of the linear matter fluctuations (γ). Our study demonstrates that in the coupled models the evolution of these quantities are modified with respect to the predictions in the uncoupled models, and therefore could be used to distinguish among coupled DE scenarios. Finally, we also perform a combined statistical analysis using current observational data (geometric and dynamical probes) to put more stringent constraints on the parameters space of the cosmic scenarios studied.
In this work we study the effects of the non-gravitational exchange energy (Q) between dark matter (DM) fluid and dark energy (DE) fluid on the background evolution of the cosmological parameters. A varying equation of state (EOS) parameter, ω, for DE is proposed. Considering an universe spatially flat, two distinct coupled models were examined to explore the main cosmological effects generated by the simultaneous reconstruction of Q and ω on the shape of the jerk parameter, j, through a slight enhancement or suppression of their amplitudes with respect to noncoupled scenarios, during its evol…
The possible imprint of quantum decoherence, in the framework of cosmology, is here investigated. Particular attention is paid to the observational fact that entanglement could lead to the interaction of different eras of cosmic evolution. The role played by decoherence provides the existence of "quantum entanglement" between cosmological eras giving, as observational results, dynamical constraints on the corresponding cosmological models.
We study the validity of cosmic distance duality relation between angular diameter and luminosity distances. To test this duality relation we use the latest Union2 Supernovae Type Ia (SNe Ia) data for estimating the luminosity distance. The estimation of angular diameter distance comes from the samples of galaxy clusters (real and mock) and FRIIb radio galaxies. We parameterize the distance duality relation as a function of redshift in four different ways and we find that the mock data set, which assumes a spherical isothermal $β$ model for the galaxy clusters does not accommodate the distance…
This thesis piles up the results of five works in the field of cosmological inflation, inflationary cosmological perturbations, cosmic microwave background(CMB) and weak gravitational lensing of cosmic microwave background.
In this work we perform an observational data analysis on the $f(R,T)$ gravity with the aim of constraining the parameter space of the model. Five different models are considered and the 30 point $z-H(z)$ cosmic chronometer data is used in our analysis. The $χ^2$ statistic is formulated as a difference between the theoretical and the observed values of $H(z)$ for different values of redshift $z$. Efforts have been made to minimize the statistic in order to get the best fit values for the free parameters models. We have also used some standard distance measurement parameters like BAO and CMB pe…
An overview of the cosmological models with expansion, shear and rotation is presented. Problems of the rotating models are discussed, their general kinematic properties and dynamical realizations are described. A particular attention is paid to the discussion of possible observational effects which could be used to estimate or to put limits on the cosmic rotation.
By integration of generalized BSBM and Brans-Dicke cosmological models, in this article, we investigate the theoretical framework of fine structure constant variation and current cosmic acceleration. We first develop a mathematical formalism to analyse the stability of the model. By employing observational data to constrain the model parameters, phase space is performed and the attractor solutions of the model are detected. We then examine the model against observational data such as observational Hubble parameter dataset and quasar absorption spectra. The results confirms current universe acc…
In this work, using the Gaussian process, we explore the potentiality of future gravitational wave (GW) measurements to probe cosmic opacity at high redshifts through comparing its opacity-free luminosity distance (LD) with the opacity-dependent one from the combination of Type Ia supernovae (SNIa) and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The GW data, SNIa and GRB data are simulated from the measurements of the future Einstein Telescope, the actual Pantheon compilation and the latest observation of GRBs compiled by L. Amati {\it et al}, respectively. A nonparametric method is proposed to probe the spatial…
We parameterize the distance duality relation as a function of redshift in six different ways. Our results rule out some of the parameterizations significantly.
In this paper, we consider a simple form of expansion history of Universe referred to as the hybrid expansion law - a product of power-law and exponential type of functions. The ansatz by construction mimics the power-law and de Sitter cosmologies as special cases but also provides an elegant description of the transition from deceleration to cosmic acceleration. We point out the Brans-Dicke realization of the cosmic history under consideration. We construct potentials for quintessence, phantom and tachyon fields, which can give rise to the hybrid expansion law in general relativity. We invest…
We constrain the cosmological density of cosmic string loops using two observational signatures -- gravitational microlensing and the Kaiser-Stebbins effect. Photometry from RXTE and CoRoT space missions and pulsar timing from Parkes Pulsar Timing Array, Arecibo and Green Bank radio telescopes allow us to probe cosmic strings in a wide range of tensions $Gμ/c^2=10^{-16}\div10^{-10}$. We find that pulsar timing data provide the most stringent constraints on the abundance of light strings at the level $Ω_s \sim 10^{-3}$. Future observational facilities such as the Square Kilometer Array will all…
The cosmic string scenario in an open universe is developed -- including the equations of motion, a model of network evolution, the large angular scale CMB temperature anisotropy, and the power spectrum of density fluctuations produced by cosmic strings with dark matter. First we derive the equations of motion for cosmic string in an open FRW space-time and construct a quantitative model of the evolution of the gross features of a cosmic string network. Second, we apply this model of network evolution to estimate the rms CMB temperature anisotropy induced by cosmic strings, obtaining the norma…
Cosmic strings are predicted in many models beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. In models which admit strings, a network of strings will inevitably be formed in a phase transition in the early universe and will persist to the present time. Strings leave behind distinctive features in cosmology. Searching for these signatures in new observational windows provides a way to constrain particle physics at the high energy scale and is thus complementary to searches for new physics at the low energy end, for example at the LHC. Specifically, I will discuss signatures of cosmic strings in c…
We overview our recent studies of cosmological models with expansion and global rotation. Problems of the early rotating models are discussed, and the class of new viable cosmologies is described in detail. Particular attention is paid to the observational effects of the cosmic rotation.
Primordial magnetic fields (PMFs) create a large squeezed-type non-Gaussianity in tensor perturbation, which generates non-Gaussian temperature fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We for the first time derive an observational constraint on such a tensor non-Gaussianity from observed CMB maps. Analyzing temperature maps of the WMAP 7-year data, we find that such a tensor non-Gaussianity is consistent with zero. This gives an upper bound on PMF strength smoothed on $1 ~ {\rm Mpc}$ as $B_{1 ~ \rm Mpc} < 3.1 ~{\rm nG}$ at $95%$ C.L.
We consider an inflationary universe model in the context of generalized cosmic Chaplygin gas by taking matter field as standard and tachyon scalar fields. We evaluate the corresponding scalar fields and scalar potentials during intermediate and logamediate inflationary regimes by modifying the first Friedmann equation. In each case, we evaluate the number of e-folds, scalar as well as tensor power spectra, scalar spectral index and important observational parameter, i.e., tensor-scalar ratio in terms of inflatons. The graphical behavior of this parameter shows that the model remains incompati…
In general relativity, gravitational collapse of matter fields ends with the formation of a spacetime singularity, where the matter density becomes infinite and standard physics breaks down. According to the weak cosmic censorship conjecture, singularities produced in the gravitational collapse cannot be seen by distant observers and must be hidden within black holes. The validity of this conjecture is still controversial and at present we cannot exclude that naked singularities can be created in our Universe from regular initial data. In this paper, we study the radiation emitted by a collaps…
We obtain the general cosmological evolution equations for a classically consistent theory of bimetric gravity. Their analytic solutions are demonstrated to generically allow for a cosmic evolution starting out from a matter dominated FLRW universe while relaxing towards a de Sitter (anti-de Sitter) phase at late cosmic time. In particular, we examine a subclass of models which contain solutions that are able to reproduce the expansion history of the cosmic concordance model inspite of the nonlinear couplings of the two metrics. This is demonstrated explicitly by fitting these models to observ…

We study the cosmic expansion history by reconstructing the deceleration parameter $q(z)$ from the SDSS-II type Ia supernova sample (SNIa) with two different light curve fits (MLCS2k2 and SALT-II), the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) distance ratio, the cosmic microwave background (CMB) shift parameter, and the lookback time-redshift (LT) from the age of old passive galaxies. Three parametrization forms for the equation of state of dark energy (CPL, JBP, and UIS) are considered. Our results show that, for the CPL and the UIS forms, MLCS2k2 SDSS-II SNIa+BAO+CMB and MLCS2k2 SDSS-II SNIa+BAO+CM…
We investigate the linear growth function for the large scale structures of the universe considering modified Chaplygin gas as dark energy. Taking into account observational growth data for a given range of redshift from the Wiggle-Z measurements and rms mass fluctuations from Ly-$α$ measurements we numerically analyze cosmological models to constrain the parameters of the MCG. The observational data of Hubble parameter with redshift ($Z$) is also considered. The Wang-Steinhardt ansatz for growth index $γ$ and growth function $f$ (defined as $f=Ω_{m}^γ (a)$) are considered for the numerical an…
We recently presented a series of dark energy theorems that place constraints on the equation of state of dark energy ($\wdark$), the ime-variation of Newton's constant ($\dot G$), and the violation of energy conditions in theories with extra dimensions. In this paper, we explore how current and future measurements of $\wdark$ and $\dot G$ can be used to place tight limits on large classes of these theories (including some of the most well-motivated examples) independent of the size of the extra dimensions. As an example, we show that models with conformally Ricci-flat metrics obeying the null…
Current data exclude cosmic strings as the primary source of primordial density fluctuations. However, in a wide class of inflationary models, strings can form at later stages of inflation and have potentially detectable observational signatures. We study the constraints from WMAP and SDSS data on the fraction of primordial fluctuations sourced by local cosmic strings. The Bayesian analysis presented in this brief report is restricted to the minimal number of parameters. Yet it is useful for two reasons. It confirms the results of Pogosian et al (2003) using an alternative statistical method. …
The observed values of density parameters inevitably involve uncertainties. We study the conditions for detectability and undetectability of cosmic topology in presence of such uncertainties. We present closed analytical forms of (un)detectability conditions for infinite redshift, which are important because: (i) they allow the examine of the detectability of cosmic topology not only for individual manifolds (topologies), but also in whole classes of manifolds; (ii) they are, to a very good approximation, (un)detectibility conditions for z=1100.
Recent observational results suggest that our universe is nearly flat and well modelled within a $Λ$CDM framework. The observed values of $Ω_{m}$ and $Ω_Λ$ inevitably involve uncertainties. Motivated by this, we make a systematic study of the necessary and sufficient conditions for undetectability as well as detectability (in principle) of cosmic topology (using pattern repetition) in presence of such uncertainties. We do this by developing two complementary methods to determine detectability for nearly flat universes. Using the first method we derive analytical conditions for undetectability …
In a broad class of dark energy models, the universe may collapse within a finite time t_c. Here we study a representative model of dark energy with a linear potential, V(ϕ)=V_0(1+αϕ). This model is the simplest doomsday model, in which the universe collapses rather quickly after it stops expanding. Observational data from type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), cosmic microwave background anisotropy (CMB), and large scale structure (LSS) are complementary in constraining dark energy models. Using the new SN Ia data (Riess sample), the CMB data from WMAP, and the LSS data from 2dF, we find that the colla…
The observational status of inflation after the Planck 2013 and 2015 results and the BICEP2/Keck Array and Planck joint analysis is discussed. These pedagogical lecture notes are intended to serve as a technical guide filling the gap between the theoretical articles on inflation and the experimental works on astrophysical and cosmological data. After a short discussion of the central tenets at the basis of inflation (negative self-gravitating pressure) and its experimental verifications, it reviews how the most recent Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropy measurements constrain cosmic i…
The high-redshift gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), GRBs 080913 and 090423, challenge the conventional GRB progenitor models by their short durations, typical for short GRBs, and their high energy releases, typical for long GRBs. Meanwhile, the GRB rate inferred from high-redshift GRBs also remarkably exceeds the prediction of the collapsar model, with an ordinary star formation history. We show that all these contradictions could be eliminated naturally, if we ascribe some high-redshift GRBs to electromagnetic bursts of superconducting cosmic strings. High-redshift GRBs could become a reasonable way t…
Two new observational windows have been opened to strong gravitational physics: gravitational waves, and very long baseline interferometry. This suggests observational searches for new phenomena in this regime, and in particular for those necessary to make black hole evolution consistent with quantum mechanics. We describe possible features of "compact quantum objects" that replace classical black holes in a consistent quantum theory, and approaches to observational tests for these using gravitational waves. This is an example of a more general problem of finding consistent descriptions of dev…
The latest result in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasar Lens Search (SQLS) has set the first cosmological constraints on negative-mass compact objects and Ellis wormholes. There are no multiple images lensed by the above two exotic objects for $\sim 50000$ distant quasars in the SQLS data. Therefore, an upper bound is put on the cosmic abundances of these lenses. The number density of negative mass compact objects is $n<10^{-8} (10^{-4}) h^3 {\rm Mpc}^{-3}$ at the mass scale $|M| > 10^{15} (10^{12}) M_\odot$, which corresponds to the cosmological density parameter $|Ω| < 10^{-4}$ at the galax…
We investigate the recent - low redshift - expansion history of the universe using the most recent observational data. Using only data from 42 measurements of $f_{gas}$ in clusters, we found that cosmic acceleration could have already peaked and we are witnessing now its slowing down. This effect, found previously by Shafieloo, Sahni and Starobinsky in 2010 using supernova data (at that time the Constitution SNIa sample) appears again using an independent observational probe. We also discuss the result using the most recent Union 2.1 data set.
The Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) braneworld model is employed to study the gravitational collapse of dust, with a Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term present in the five-dimensional bulk. We find that, within the normal (nonself-accelerating) DGP branch and due to the curvature effects from the GB component on the brane, the black hole singularity acquires modified features. More precisely, during collapse and for a finite comoving time, before a singularity would emerge at the zero physical radius, the first time derivative of the Hubble rate diverges, whereas the brane energy density and the Hubble rate…
We study a scenario based upon a mass-less $λϕ^4$ theory coupled to massive neutrino matter with $Z_2$ symmetry using a conformal coupling, $A(ϕ)=1-αϕ^2/2M_{pl}^2;~α=M^2_{pl}/M^2$ where $M$ is a cut off mass. The chosen coupling generically leads to the spontaneous symmetry breaking at late times such that the field acquires non-zero mass, $m_ϕ=(αΩ_{0ν})^{1/2}H_0 \ll H_0 $ and rolls slowly around the true ground state which emerges after spontaneous symmetry breaking. For the statistical analysis, we utilize Pantheon+Multi-Cycle Treasury and OHD data sets. We find that even a small fraction of…
In this work, we consider a network of cosmic strings to explain possible deviation from ΛCDM behaviour. We use different observational data to constrain the model and show that a small but non zero contribution from the string network is allowed by the observational data which can result in a reasonable departure from ΛCDM evolution. But by calculating the Bayesian Evidence, we show that the present data still strongly favour the concordance ΛCDM model irrespective of the choice of the prior.
We use the recently released cosmic chronometer data and the latest measured value of the local Hubble parameter, combined with the latest joint light curves of Supernovae Type Ia, and Baryon Acoustic Oscillation distance measurements, in order to impose constraints on the viable and most used $f(R)$ gravity models. We consider four $f(R)$ models, namely the Hu-Sawicki, the Starobinsky, the Tsujikawa, and the exponential one, and we parametrize them introducing a distortion parameter $b$ that quantifies the deviation from $Λ$CDM cosmology. Our analysis reveals that a small but non-zero deviati…
Directly comparing the 6 expansion rate measured by type Ia supernovae data and the lower bound on the expansion rate set by the strong energy conditions or the null hypothesis that there never exists cosmic acceleration, we see $3σ$ direct evidence of cosmic acceleration and the $Rh=ct$ model is strongly excluded by the type Ia supernovae data. We also use Gaussian process method to reconstruct the expansion rate and the deceleration parameter from the 31 cosmic chronometers data and the 6 data points on the expansion rate measured from type Ia supernoave data, the direct evidence of cosmic a…
We use the local value of the Hubble constant recently measured with 2.4% precision, as well as the latest compilation of cosmic chronometers data, together with standard probes such as Supernovae Type Ia and Baryon Acoustic Oscillation distance measurements, in order to impose constraints on the viable and most used f(T) gravity models, where T is the torsion scalar in teleparallel gravity. In particular, we consider three f(T) models with two parameters, out of which one is independent, and we quantify their deviation from $Λ$CDM cosmology through a sole parameter. Our analysis reveals that …
Overall, brane inflation is compatible with the recent analysis of the WMAP data. Here we explore the constraints of WMAP and 2dFGRS data on the various brane inflationary scenarios. Brane inflation naturally ends with the production of cosmic strings, which may provide a way to distinguish these models observationally. We argue that currently available data cannot exclude a non-negligible contribution from cosmic strings definitively. We perform a partial statistical analysis of mixed models that include a sub-dominant contribution from cosmic strings. Although the data favor models without c…
In the timescape scenario cosmic acceleration is understand as an apparent effect, due to gravitational energy gradients that grow when spatial curvature gradients become significant with the nonlinear growth of cosmic structure. This affects the calibratation of local geometry to the solutions of the volume-average evolution equations corrected by backreaction. In this paper I discuss recent work on defining observational tests for average geometric quantities which can distinguish the timescape model from a cosmological constant or other models of dark energy.
We present a cosmic string on a warped five dimensional space time in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory. Four-dimensional cosmic strings show some serious problems concerning the mechanism of string smoothing related to the string mass per unit length, $Gμ\approx 10^{-6}$. A warped cosmic string could overcome this problem and also the superstring requirement that $Gμ$ must be of order 1, which is far above observational bounds. Also the absence of observational evidence of axially symmetric lensing effect caused by cosmic strings could be explained by the warped cosmic string model we present: the a…
The unknown physical nature of the Dark Energy motivates in cosmology the study of modifications of the gravity theory at large distances. One of these types of modifications is to consider gravity theories, generally termed as $f(R)$. In this paper we use observational data to both constrain and test the Starobinsky $f(R)$ model \cite{Starobinsky2007}, using updated measurements from the dynamics of the expansion of the universe, $H(z)$; and the growth rate of cosmic structures, $[fσ_8](z)$, where the distinction between the concordance $Λ$CDM model and modified gravity models $f(R)$ becomes …
We place observational constraints on models with the late-time cosmic acceleration based on a number of parametrizations allowing fast transitions for the equation of state of dark energy. In addition to the model of Linder and Huterer where the dark energy equation of state $w$ monotonically grows or decreases in time, we propose two new parametrizations in which $w$ has an extremum. We carry out the likelihood analysis with the three parametrizations by using the observational data of supernovae type Ia, cosmic microwave background, and baryon acoustic oscillations. Although the transient c…
The ghost free massive gravity modified Friedmann equations at cosmic scale and provided an explanation of cosmic acceleration without dark energy. We analyzed the cosmological solutions of the massive gravity in detail and confronted the cosmological model with current observational data. We found that the model parameters $α_3$ and $α_4$ which are the coefficients of the third and fourth order nonlinear interactions cannot be constrained by current data at the background level. The mass of graviton is found to be the order of current Hubble constant if $α_3=α_4=0$, and the mass of graviton c…
Recently it was found, in a broad class of models, that the dark energy density may change its sign during the evolution of the universe. This may lead to a global collapse of the universe within the time t_c ~ 10^{10}-10^{11} years. Our goal is to find what bounds on the future lifetime of the universe can be placed by the next generation of cosmological observations. As an example, we investigate the simplest model of dark energy with a linear potential V(ϕ) =V_0(1+αϕ). This model can describe the present stage of acceleration of the universe if αis small enough. However, eventually the fiel…
In these lectures, I review the current status of cosmic strings and cosmic superstrings. I first discuss topological defects in the context of Grand Unified Theories, focusing in particular in cosmic strings arising as gauge theory solitons. I discuss the reconciliation between cosmic strings and cosmological inflation, I review cosmic string dynamics, cosmic string thermodynamics and cosmic string gravity, which leads to a number of interesting observational signatures. I then proceed with the notion of cosmic superstrings arising at the end of brane inflation, within the context of brane-wo…
