We extend the $L^p$-theory of the Boltzmann collision operator by using classical techniques based in the Carleman representation and Fourier analysis, allied to new ideas that exploit the radial symmetry of this operator. We are then able to greatly simplify existent technical proofs in this theory, extend the range, and obtain explicit sharp constants in some convolution-like inequalities for the gain part of the Boltzmann collision operator.
We study the Boltzmann equation with external forces, not necessarily deriving from a potential, in the incompressible Navier-Stokes perturbative regime. On the torus, we establish local-in-time, for any time, Cauchy theories that are independent of the Knudsen number in Sobolev spaces. The existence is proved around a time-dependent Maxwellian that behaves like the global equilibrium both as time grows and as the Knudsen number decreases. We combine hypocoercive properties of linearized Boltzmann operators with linearization around a time-dependent Maxwellian that catches the fluctuations of …
The global classical solution to the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equation with small initial data in the whole space is constructed through a zero Knudsen number limit from the solutions to the Boltzmann equation with general collision kernels. The key point is the uniform estimate of the Sobolev norm on the global solutions to the Boltzmann equation.
We study Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac equation when quantum effects are taken into account in dilute gas dynamics. By employing new estimates on trilinear terms of collision kernels, we prove the global existence of the classical solution to Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac equation near equilibrium. Furthermore, the limit from Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac equation to incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations is justified rigorously. The corresponding formal analysis was given in the thesis of Zakrevskiy \cite{Zakrevskiy}
Numerical approximation of the Boltzmann equation is a challenging problem due to its high-dimensional, nonlocal, and nonlinear collision integral. Over the past decade, the Fourier-Galerkin spectral method has become a popular deterministic method for solving the Boltzmann equation, manifested by its high accuracy and potential of being further accelerated by the fast Fourier transform. Albeit its practical success, the stability of the method is only recently proved by Filbet, F. & Mouhot, C. in [$ Trans. Amer. Math. Soc.$ 363, no. 4 (2011): 1947-1980.] by utilizing the "spreading" property …
In this paper, we consider a class of spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff. We prove that any radial symmetric weak solution of the Cauchy problem become analytic for positive time.
In this paper, we justify the convergence from the two-species Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (in briefly,VPB) system to the two-fluid incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Poisson (in briefly, NSFP) system with Ohm's law in the context of classical solutions. We prove the uniform estimates with respect to the Knudsen number $\varepsilon$ for the solutions to the two-species VPB system near equilibrium by treating the strong interspecies interactions. Consequently, we prove the convergence to the two-fluid incompressible NSFP as $\varepsilon$ go to 0.
We establish the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier limit for solutions to the Boltzmann equation with a general cut-off collision kernel in a bounded domain. Appropriately scaled families of DiPerna-Lions-(Mischler) renormalized solutions with Maxwell reflection boundary conditions are shown to have fluctuations that converge as the Knudsen number goes to zero. Every limit point is a weak solution to the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with different types of boundary conditions depending on the ratio between the accommodation coefficient and the Knudsen number. The main new result of the pape…
For the one-species Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (VPB) system in the scaling under which the moments of the fluctuations formally converge to the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Poisson (NSFP) system, we prove the uniform estimates with respect to the Knudsen number $ε$ for the fluctuations. As a consequence, the existence of the global-in-time classical solutions of VPB with all $ε\in (0,1]$ is established in whole space under small size of initial data, and the convergence to incompressible NSFP as $ε$ go to 0 is rigorously justified.
We find a formula that relates the Fourier transform of a radial function on $\mathbf{R}^n$ with the Fourier transform of the same function defined on $\mathbf{R}^{n+2}$. This formula enables one to explicitly calculate the Fourier transform of any radial function $f(r)$ in any dimension, provided one knows the Fourier transform of the one-dimensional function $t\to f(|t|)$ and the two-dimensional function $(x_1,x_2)\to f(|(x_1,x_2)|)$. We prove analogous results for radial tempered distributions.
We prove a global-in-time limit from the two-species Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system to the two-fluid incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Maxwell system with Ohm's law. Besides the techniques developed for the classical solutions to the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann equations in the past years, such as the nonlinear energy method and micro-macro decomposition are employed, key roles are played by the decay properties of both the electric field and the wave equation with linear damping of the divergence free magnetic field. This is a companion paper of [N. Jiang and Y.-L. Luo, \emph{Ann. PDE} 8 (20…
Thermal Relaxation Effects on Stability Thresholds: A Comparative Analysis of Thermoelastic Timoshenko-Boltzmann Systems Under Fourier and Cattaneo Laws
We derive the linear acoustic and Stokes-Fourier equations as the limiting dynamics of a system of N hard spheres of diameter $ε$ in two space dimensions, when N $\rightarrow$ $\infty$, $ε$ $\rightarrow$ 0, N $ε$ = $α$ $\rightarrow$ $\infty$, using the linearized Boltzmann equation as an intermediate step. Our proof is based on Lanford's strategy [18], and on the pruning procedure developed in [5] to improve the convergence time to all kinetic times with a quantitative control which allows us to reach also hydrodynamic time scales. The main novelty here is that uniform L 2 a pri-ori estimates …
The incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Maxwell system limits of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system for soft potentials: the noncutoff cases and cutoff cases
In this paper, we give an overview of the results established in [3] which provides the first rigorous derivation of hydrodynamic equations from the Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres in 3D. In particular, we obtain a new system of hydrodynamic equations describing granular flows and prove existence of classical solutions to the aforementioned system. One of the main issue is to identify the correct relation between the restitution coefficient (which quantifies the rate of energy loss at the microscopic level) and the Knudsen number which allows us to obtain non trivial hydrodynamic…
For the two-species Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann (VMB) system with the scaling under which the moments of the fluctuations to the global Maxwellians formally converge to the two-fluid incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Maxwell (NSFM) system with Ohm's law, we prove the uniform estimates with respect to Knudsen number $\eps$ for the fluctuations. As consequences, the existence of the global in time classical solutions of VMB with all $\eps \in (0,1]$ is established. Furthermore, the convergence of the fluctuations of the solutions of VMB to the classical solutions of NSFM with Ohm's law is rigoro…
Despite its conceptual and practical importance, the rigorous derivation of the steady incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system from the Boltzmann theory has been {an} outstanding {open problem} for general domains in 3D. We settle this open question in {the} affirmative, in the presence of a small external field and a small boundary temperature variation for the diffuse boundary condition. We employ a recent quantitative $L^{2}-L^{\infty }$ approach with new $L^{6}$ estimates for the hydrodynamic part $\mathbf{P}f$ of the distribution function. Our results also imply the validity of Fourie…
We study the homogeneous Boltzmann equation with the fractional Laplacian term. Working on the Fourier side we solve the resulting integral equation, and improve a previous result by Y.-K. Cho. We replace the initial data space with a certain space $\mathcal{M}^α$ introduced by Morimoto, Wang, and Yang. This space precisely captures the Fourier image of probability measures with bounded fractional moments, providing a more natural initial condition. We show existence of a unique global solution, in addition to the expected maximal growth estimates and stability estimates. As a consequence we o…
The incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with viscous heating was first derived from the Boltzmann equation in the form of the diffusive scaling by Bardos-Levermore-Ukai-Yang (2008). The purpose of this paper is to justify such an incompressible hydrodynamic approximation to the Boltzmann equation in $L^2\cap L^\infty$ setting in a periodic box. Based on an odd-even expansion of the solution with respect to the microscopic velocity, the diffusive coefficients are determined by the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with viscous heating and the super Burnett functions. More impo…
The aim of this paper is to extend to the spaces L^2(R^d , (1+|v|)^2k dv) the spectral study led in L^2(R^d , exp(|v|^2/2)dv) by R. Ellis and M. Pinsky on the space inhomogeneous linearized Boltzmann operator for hard spheres. More precisely, we look at the Fourier transform in the space variable of the inhomogeneous operator and consider the dual Fourier variable as a fixed parameter. We then perform a precise study of this operator for small frequencies (by seeing it as a perturbation of the homogeneous one) and also for large frequencies from spectral and semigroup point of views. Our appro…
Consider the stationary Boltzmann equation in 2D convex domains with diffusive boundary condition. In this paper, we establish the hydrodynamic limits while the boundary layers are present, and derive the steady Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with non-slip boundary conditions. Our contribution focuses on novel weighted $W^{1,\infty}$ estimates for the Milne problem with geometric correction. Also, we develop stronger remainder estimates based on an $L^{2m}-L^{\infty}$ framework.
We use the dispersive properties of the linear Schrödinger equation to prove local well-posedness results for the Boltzmann equation and the related Boltzmann hierarchy, set in the spatial domain $\mathbb{R}^d$ for $d\geq 2$. The proofs are based on the use of the (inverse) Wigner transform along with the spacetime Fourier transform. The norms for the initial data $f_0$ are weighted versions of the Sobolev spaces $L^2_v H^α_x$ with $α\in \left( \frac{d-1}{2},\infty\right)$. Our main results are local well-posedness for the Boltzmann equation for cutoff Maxwell molecules and hard spheres, as we…
The non-cutoff Kac operator is a kinetic model for the non-cutoff radially symmetric Boltzmann operator. For Maxwellian molecules, the linearization of the non-cutoff Kac operator around a Maxwellian distribution is shown to be a function of the harmonic oscillator, to be diagonal in the Hermite basis and to be essentially a fractional power of the harmonic oscillator. This linearized operator is a pseudodifferential operator, and we provide a complete asymptotic expansion for its symbol in a class enjoying a nice symbolic calculus. Related results for the linearized non-cutoff radially symmet…
We show that the short-time Fourier transform of the pointwise product of two functions $f$ and $h$ can be written as a suitable product of the short-time Fourier transforms of $f$ and $h$. The same result is then shown to be valid for the Wigner wave-packet transform. We study the main properties of the new products. We then use these products to derive integro-differential equations on the time-frequency space equivalent to, and generalizing, the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We also obtain the Weyl-Wigner-Moyal equation satisfied by the Wigner-Ville function associated with the solu…

We prove sharp inequalities for the symmetric-decreasing rearrangement in Fourier space of functions in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Our main result can be applied to a general class of (pseudo-)differential operators in $\mathbb{R}^d$ of arbitrary order with radial Fourier multipliers. For example, we can take any positive power of the Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$ with $s> 0$ and, in particular, any polyharmonic operator $(-Δ)^m$ with integer $m \geq 1$. As applications, we prove radial symmetry and real-valuedness (up to trivial symmetries) of optimizers for: i) Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities with derivatives of…
Incompressible Navier-Stokes limit of non-bilinear kinetic equations and application to the BGK, nonlinear Fokker-Planck and Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac equations
In this paper we prove the uniqueness and radial symmetry of minimizers for variational problems that model several phenomena. The uniqueness is a consequence of the convexity of the functional. The main technique is Fourier transform of tempered distributions.
