A knot in S^3 is said to have crosscap number two if it bounds a once-punctured Klein bottle but not a Moebius band. In this paper we give a method of constructing crosscap number two hyperbolic (1,2)-knots with tunnel number one which are neither 2-bridge nor (1,1)-knots. An explicit infinite family of such knots is discussed in detail.
We introduce an unknotting-type number of knot projections that gives an upper bound of the crosscap number of knots. We determine the set of knot projections with the unknotting-type number at most two, and this result implies classical and new results that determine the set of alternating knots with the crosscap number at most two.
We specify the computational complexity of crosscap numbers of alternating knots by introducing an automatic computation. For an alternating knot $K$, let $\cal{E}$ be the number of edges of its diagram. Then there exists a code such that the complexity of this computation of the crosscap number of $K$ is estimated by $O(\cal{E}^3)$.
The concordance crosscap number $γ_c(K)$ of a knot $K$ is the smallest crosscap number $γ_3(K')$ of any knot $K'$ concordant to $K$ (and with $γ_3(K')$ defined as the least first Betti number of any nonorientable surface $Σ$ embedded in $S^3$ with boundary $K'$). This invariant has been introduced and studied by Zhang using knot determinants and signatures, and has further been studied by Livingston using the Alexander polynomial. We show in this work that the rational Witt class of a knot can be used to obtain a lower bound on the concordance crosscap number, by means of a new integer-valued …
Ito-Takimura recently defined a splice-unknotting number $u^-(D)$ for knot diagrams. They proved that this number provides an upper bound for the crosscap number of any prime knot, asking whether equality holds in the alternating case. We answer their question in the affirmative. (Ito has independently proven the same result.) As an application, we compute the crosscap numbers of all prime alternating knots through at least 13 crossings, using Gauss codes.
We consider the relationship between the crosscap number $γ$ of knots and a partial order on the set of all prime knots, which is defined as follows. For two knots $K$ and $J$, we say $K \geq J$ if there exists an epimorphism $f:π_1(S^3-K) \longrightarrow π_1(S^3-J)$. We prove that if $K$ and $J$ are 2-bridge knots and $K> J$, then $γ(K) \geq 3γ(J) -4$. We also classify all pairs $(K,J)$ for which the inequality is sharp. A similar result relating the genera of two knots has been proven by Suzuki and Tran. Namely, if $K$ and $J$ are 2-bridge knots and $K >J$, then $g(K) \geq 3 g(J)-1$, where $…
We study the 3-dimensional immersed crosscap number of a knot, which is a nonorientable analogue of the immersed Seifert genus. We study knots with immersed crosscap number 1, and show that a knot has immersed crosscap number 1 if and only if it is a nonntrivial $(2p,q)$-torus or $(2p,q)$-cable knot. We show that unlike in the orientable case the immersed crosscap number can differ from the embedded crosscap number by arbitrarily large amounts, and that it is neither bounded below nor above by the 4-dimensional crosscap number. We then use these constructions to find, for any $n\geq 2$, an ori…
We introduce a "deformation" of plumbing. We also define a structure of data used in a calculation by computer aid of the crosscap numbers of alternating knots.
The crosscap number of a knot is an invariant describing the non-orientable surface of smallest genus that the knot bounds. Unlike knot genus (its orientable counterpart), crosscap numbers are difficult to compute and no general algorithm is known. We present three methods for computing crosscap number that offer varying trade-offs between precision and speed: (i) an algorithm based on Hilbert basis enumeration and (ii) an algorithm based on exact integer programming, both of which either compute the solution precisely or reduce it to two possible values, and (iii) a fast but limited precision…
We give sharp two-sided linear bounds of the crosscap number (non-orientable genus) of alternating links in terms of their Jones polynomial. Our estimates are often exact and we use them to calculate the crosscap numbers for several infinite families of alternating links and for several alternating knots with up to twelve crossings. We also discuss generalizations of our results for classes of non-alternating links.
Given a knot in the 3-sphere, the non-orientable 4-genus or 4-dimensional crosscap number of a knot is the minimal first Betti number of non-orientable surfaces, smoothly and properly embedded in the 4-ball, with boundary the knot. In this paper, we calculate the non-orientable 4-genus of knots with crossing number 10.
The genus of satellite tunnel number one knots and torti-rational knots is computed using the tools introduced by Floyd and Hatcher. An implementation of an algorithm is given to compute genus and slopes of minimal genus Seifert surfaces for such knots.
We give lower bounds for the tunnel number of knots and handlebody-knots. We also give a lower bound for the cutting number, which is a "dual" notion to the tunnel number in the handlebody-knot theory. We provide necessary conditions for constituent handlebody-knots by using $G$-family of quandles colorings. The above two evaluations are obtained as the corollaries. Furthermore, we construct handlebody-knots with arbitrary tunnel number and cutting number.
We show that twisted torus knots $T(p,q,3,s)$ are tunnel number one. A short spanning arc connecting two adjacent twisted strands is an unknotting tunnel.
We provide criteria ensuring that a tunnel number one knot $K$ is not determined by its double branched cover, in the sense that the double branched cover is also the double branched cover of a knot $K'$ not equivalent to $K$.
This is the first of three papers that refine and extend portions of our earlier preprint, "Depth of a knot tunnel." Together, they rework the entire preprint. H. Goda, M. Scharlemann, and A. Thompson described a general construction of all tunnels of all tunnel number 1 knots using "tunnel moves". We apply the theory that we introduced in "The tree of knot tunnels" to study this construction. In particular, we use it to calculate the number of distinct minimal sequences of tunnel moves that can produce a given tunnel. As a consequence, we see that for a sparse infinite set of tunnels, the min…
In a previous paper the authors defined the growth rate of the tunnel number of knots, an invariant that measures that asymptotic behavior of the tunnel number under connected sum. In this paper we calculate the growth rate of the tunnel number of m-small knots in terms of their bridge indices.
Let $K$ be a tunnel number two knot. Then, by considering the $(g, b)$-decompositions, $K$ is one of (3, 0)-, (2, 1)-, (1, 2)- or (0, 3)-knots. In the present paper, we analyze the connected sum summands of composite tunnel number two knots and give a complete table of those summands from the point of view of $(g, b)$-decompositions.
We calculate the twisted Alexander polynomials of all tunnel number one Montesinos knots associated to their $SL_2(\mathbb{C})$-representations and obtain their leading coefficients and degrees. As a corollary, we get some interesting examples, that is, nonfibered knots with monic Alexander polynomials which have non-monic twisted Alexander polynomials.
We study 2-string free tangle decompositions of knots with tunnel number two. As an application, we construct infinitely many counter-examples to a conjecture in the literature stating that the tunnel number of the connected sum of prime knots doesn't degenerate by more than one.
Using exhaustive techniques and results from Lackenby and many others, we compute the tunnel number of all 1655 alternating 11 and 12 crossing knots and of 881 non-alternating 11 and 12 crossing knots. We also find all 5525 Montesinos knots with 14 crossings or fewer.
For a genus-1 1-bridge knot in the 3-sphere, that is, a (1,1)-knot, a middle tunnel is a tunnel that is not an upper or lower tunnel for some (1,1)-position. Most torus knots have a middle tunnel, and non-torus-knot examples were obtained by Goda, Hayashi, and Ishihara. In a previous paper, we generalized their construction and calculated the slope invariants for the resulting examples. We give an iterated version of the construction that produces many more examples, and calculate their slope invariants. If one starts with the trivial knot, the iterated constructions produce all the 2-bridge k…
A knot k in a closed orientable 3-manifold is called nonsimple if the exterior of k possesses a properly embedded essential surface of nonnegative Euler characteristic. We show that if k is a nonsimple prime tunnel number one knot in a lens space M (where M does not contain any embedded Klein bottles), then k is a (1,1) knot. Elements of the proof include handle addition and Dehn filling results/techniques of Jaco, Eudave-Munoz and Gordon as well as structure results of Schultens on the Heegaard splittings of graph manifolds.
We generalize their construction and calculate the slope invariants for the resulting middle tunnels. In particular, we obtain the slope sequence of the original example of Goda, Hayashi, and Ishihara.
In this article, we prove that a tunnel number two knot induces a critical Heegaard splitting in its exterior if there are two weak reducing pairs such that each weak reducing pair contains the cocore disk of each tunnel. Moreover, we prove that a connected sum of two 2-bridge knots or more generally that of two $(1,1)$-knots can induce a critical Heegaard splitting in its exterior as the examples of the main theorem. Finally, we give an equivalent condition for a weak reducing pair to be determined by a compressing disk uniquely when the manifold is closed, irreducible and the Heegaard splitt…
Let $K_1, K_2$ be two knots with $t(K_1)+t(K_2)>2$ and $t(K_1 # K_2)=2$. Then, in the present paper, we will show that any genus three Heegaard splittings of $E(K_1 # K_2)$ is strongly irreducible and that $E(K_1 # K_2)$ has at most four genus three Heegaard splittings up to homeomorphism. Moreover, we will give a complete classification of those four genus three Heegaard splittings and show unknotting tunnel systems of knots $K_1 # K_2$ corresponding to those Heegaard splittings.
这是Gordon-Reid [Tangle decompositions of tunnel number one knots and links,J.纽结理论及其分支,4(1995)389-409]和Thompson [Thin position and bridge number for knots in the 3-sphere,Topology,36(1997)505-507]的定理的结果,如果将一个隧道号结置于薄的位置,也会在桥上。我们表明,在这样一个薄的介绍,隧道可以使水平,使它位于一个水平的领域。这解决了Morimoto提出的一个问题[A note on unknotting tunnels for 2-bridge knots,Bulletin of Faculty of Engineering Takushoku University,3(1992)219-225],他表明,如果已知任何unknotting tunnel都可以被制成水平的,那么用于2-bridge knots的unknotting tunnel的(现在已知的)分类将很快出现。
We exhibit an infinite family of knots in the Poincare homology sphere with tunnel number 2 that have a lens space surgery. Notably, these knots are not doubly primitive and provide counterexamples to a few conjectures. In the appendix, it is shown that hyperbolic knots in the Poincare homology sphere with a lens space surgery has either no symmetries or just a single strong involution.
Let $K$ be a nontrivial knot in $S^{3}$ and $t(K)$ its tunnel number. For any $(p\geq 2,q)$-slope in the torus boundary of a closed regular neighborhood of $ K$ in $S^{3}$, denoted by $K^{\star}$, it is a nontrivial cable knot in $S^{3}$. Though $t(K^{\star})\leq t(K)+1$, Example 1.1 in Section 1 shows that in some case, $ t(K^{\star})\leq t(K)$. So it is interesting to know when $t(K^{\star})= t(K)+1$. After using some combinatorial techniques, we prove that (1) for any nontrivial cable knot $K^{\star}$ and its companion $K$, $t(K^{\star})\geq t(K)$; (2) if either $K$ admits a high distance H…
We show that, for any integer $n\ge 3$, there is a prime knot $k$ such that (1) $k$ is not meridionally primitive, and (2) for every $m$-bridge knot $k'$ with $m\leq n$, the tunnel numbers satisfy $t(k\# k')\le t(k)$. This gives counterexamples to a conjecture of Morimoto and Moriah on tunnel number under connected sum and meridionally primitive knots.
As one of the background papers of the classification project of hyperbolic primitive/Seifert knots in $S^3$ whose complete list is given in [BK20], this paper classifies all possible R-R diagrams of two disjoint simple closed curves $R$ and $β$ lying in the boundary of a genus two handlebody $H$ up to equivalence such that $β$ is a proper power curve and a 2-handle addition $H[R]$ along $R$ embeds in $S^3$ so that $H[R]$ is the exterior of a tunnel-number-one knot. As a consequence, if $R$ is a nonseparating simple closed curve on the boundary of a genus two handlebody such that $H[R]$ embeds…
Suppose $α$ and $R$ are disjoint simple closed curves in the boundary of a genus two handlebody $H$ such that $H[R]$ embeds in $S^3$ as the exterior of a hyperbolic knot $k$(thus, $k$ is a tunnel-number-one knot), and $α$ is Seifert in $H$(i.e., a 2-handle addition $H[α]$ is a Seifert-fibered space) and not the meridian of $H[R]$. Then for a slope $γ$ of $k$ represented by $α$, $γ$-Dehn surgery $k(γ)$ is a Seifert-fibered space. Such a construction of Seifert-fibered Dehn surgeries generalizes that of Seifert-fibered Dehn surgeries arising from primtive/Seifert positions of a knot, which was i…
