Pulsational variability is observed in several types of main sequence stars with anomalous chemical abundances. In this contribution I summarize the relationship between pulsations and chemical peculiarities, giving special emphasis to rapid oscillations in magnetic Ap stars. These magneto-acoustic pulsators provide unique opportunities to study the interaction of pulsations, chemical inhomogeneities, and strong magnetic fields. Time-series monitoring of rapidly oscillating Ap stars using high-resolution spectrometers at large telescopes and ultra-precise space photometry has led to a number of important breakthroughs in our understanding of these interesting objects. Interpretation of the roAp frequency spectra has allowed constraining fundamental stellar parameters and probing poorly known properties of the stellar interiors. At the same time, investigation of the pulsational wave propagation in chemically stratified atmospheres of roAp stars has been used as a novel asteroseismic tool to study pulsations as a function of atmospheric height and to map in detail the horizontal structure of the magnetically-distorted p-modes.
Procedure and results of computations of stellar model atmospheres and spectral energy distributions are discussed. Model atmospheres of some chemically peculiar stars are computed taking into account detailed information about their abundances: -- R CrB-like stars of Teff $\sim$ 7000 K, -- Sakurai's object (V4334 Sgr) of 4000 $<$ \Tef $<$ 7000 K -- Przybylski's star of Teff $\sim$ 6500 K. We show that our self-consistent approach provides a unique possibility to investigate the temporal changes of physical parameters of chemically peculiar stars. Some problems of computation of model atmosphe…
We present a principle component analysis of multicolour light variations of the He-strong magnetic chemically peculiar star HD 37776 and its (O-C) diagram. The period increase rate found, (dP/dt) / P = 5.5 x 10^{-6}/year, is consistent with the conception of angular momentum loss through magnetically confined stellar wind.
Recently, with the goal to study multiplicity of chemically peculiar stars, we carried out a survey of 40 stars using diffraction limited near infrared (IR) imaging with NAOS-CONICA (NACO) at the VLT. Here, we announce the detection of 27 near IR companion candidates around 25 late B-type chemically peculiar stars exhibiting strong overabundances of the chemical elements Hg and Mn in their atmospheres. A key point for the understanding of the abundance patterns in these stars may be connected with binarity and multiplicity. It is intriguing that more than half of the sample of HgMn stars studi…
This paper presents the catalogue and the method of determination of averaged quadratic effective magnetic fields B_e for 596 main sequence and giant stars. the catalogue is based on measurements of the stellar effective (or mean longitudinal) magnetic field strengths B_e, which were compiled from the existing literature. We analysed the properties of 352 chemically peculiar A and B stars in the catalogue, including Am, ApSi, He-weak, He-rich, HgMn, ApSrCrEu, and all ApSr type stars. We have found, that the number distribution of all chemically peculiar (CP) stars vs. averaged magnetic field s…
We calculate multicomponent stellar wind models with inclusion of a helium component applicable to He-rich and He-poor stars. We show that helium does not decouple from the stellar wind of He-rich stars due to its coupling to hydrogen and its ionized state. For He-poor stars helium may decouple from the stellar wind, however this effect is not able to explain the chemical peculiarity of these stars. We conclude that the explanation of chemical peculiarity of these stars based purely on helium or hydrogen decoupling from the stellar wind is unlikely.
The atmospheric structure of chemically peculiar stars deviates from that of normal stars with similar fundamental parameters due to unusual chemistry, abundance inhomogeneities and the presence of strong magnetic field. These effects are not considered in the standard model atmospheres, possibly leading to large errors in the stellar parameter determination and abundance analysis. To tackle this problem we used the state-of-the-art opacity sampling model atmosphere code LLmodels to calculate comprehensive grid of new generation model atmospheres for magnetic CP stars. This grid covers the who…
We report the discovery of resolved magnetically split lines in two chemically peculiar stars, the SrEuCr star HD 92499 and the Bp SiCr star HD 157751. From FEROS spectra, we have measured a mean magnetic field modulus of 8.5 kG for HD 92499 and a mean magnetic field modulus of 6.6 kG for HD 157751. Both stars have small projected rotational velocities: v sin i = 3.0 km/s and 8.5 km/s, respectively. Our preliminary abundance analysis reveals ionisation imbalance of rare earths in HD 92499 indicating the abundance pattern typical of rapidly oscillating Ap stars. Cr and Fe are found strongly ove…
Chemically peculiar stars define a class of stars that show unusual elemental abundances due to stellar photospheric effects and not due to natal variations. In this paper, we compare the elemental abundance patterns of the ultra metal-poor stars with metallicities [Fe/H] $\sim -5 $ to those of a subclass of chemically peculiar stars. These include post-AGB stars, RV Tauri variable stars, and the Lambda Bootis stars, which range in mass, age, binarity, and evolutionary status, yet can have iron abundance determinations as low as [Fe/H] $\sim -5$. These chemical peculiarities are interpreted as…
New observational techniques and sophisticated modelling methods has led to dramatic breakthroughs in our understanding of the interplay between the surface magnetism, atomic diffusion and atmospheric dynamics in chemically peculiar stars. Magnetic Doppler images, constructed using spectropolarimetric observations of Ap stars in all four Stokes parameters, reveal the presence of small-scale field topologies. Abundance Doppler mapping has been perfected to the level where distributions of many different chemical elements can be deduced self-consistently for one star. The inferred chemical spot …
The origin of the strong magnetic fields observed in chemically peculiar Ap and Bp stars stars has long been debated. The recent discovery of magnetic fields in the intermediate mass pre-main sequence Herbig Ae and Be stars links them to Ap and Bp stars, providing vital clues about Ap and Bp stars and the origin and evolution of magnetic fields in intermediate and high mass stars. A detailed study of one young magnetic B star, HD 72106A, is presented. This star appears to be in a binary system with an apparently normal Herbig Ae star. A maximum longitudinal magnetic field strength of +391 +/- …
For the purpose of deriving the helium abundances in chemically peculiar stars, the importance of assuming a correct helium abundance has been investigated for determining the effective temperature and gravity of main sequence B-type stars, making full use of the present capability of reproducing their helium lines. Even if the flux distribution of main sequence B-type stars appears to depend only on the effective temperature for any helium abundance, the effective temperature, gravity and helium abundance have to be determined simultaneously by matching the Balmer line profiles. New MULTI NLT…
With the aim to corroborate the result of a search for chemically peculiar stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) we present measurements obtained from CCD-imaging of two fields, one containing a young open cluster (NGC 1711). While for the latter field, including its surrounding we obtain a contribution of three percent of chemically peculiar stars detectable by Delta a photometry (i.e. the magnetic objects of this group), the second field yields about half of this value in good accordance with the finding for NGC 1866 (Maitzen et al., 2001, A&A, 371, L5) the surrounding field of which has…
The determination of effective temperature for chemically peculiar (CP) stars by means of photometry is a sophisticated task due to their abnormal colours. Standard calibrations for normal stars lead to erroneous results and, in most cases corrections are necessary. In order to specify appropriate corrections, direct temperature determinations for 176 objects of the different subgroups were collected from the literature. This much larger sample than in previous studies therefore allows a more accurate investigation, mostly based on average temperatures. For the three main photometric systems (…
Chemically peculiar stars present spectral and photometric variability with a single period. In the oblique rotator model, the non homogeneous distribution of elements on the stellar surface is at the origin of the observed variations. As to helium weak stars, it has been suggested that photometric and helium line equivalent width variations are out of phase. To understand the behaviour of helium in CP stars, we have obtained time resolved spectra of the HeI5876 A line for a sample of 16 chemically peculiar stars in the spectral range B3 -- A1 and belonging to different sub-groups. The HeI5876…
Barium stars and technetium-poor, extrinsic S stars are binary systems with a white dwarf companion, and with orbital elements similar to those of symbiotic systems. One may thus wonder whether these various families of binary systems involving red giant stars are somehow related. This question is actually twofold: (i) Do barium and binary S stars exhibit some symbiotic activity? (ii) Do symbiotic systems exhibit overabundances of s-process elements like barium and S stars? This paper reviews the current situation regarding these two questions.
Some CP stars have recently been discovered by Catalano et al. (1991) to be variable also in the near infrared, although with smaller amplitudes than in the visible. Hence an observational campaign was started in which the infrared light variability of a number of CP2 and CP4 stars has been investigated at the ESO-La Silla Observatory in the bands J, H, and K. As a general result, infrared variations show the same behavior in all three filters but amplitudes are smaller than in the visible.
Chemical composition is a good tracer of hydrodynamical processes that occur in stars as they often lead to mixing and particle transport. By comparing abundances predicted by models and those observed in stars we can infer some constraints on those mixing processes. As pulsations in stars are often very sensitive to chemical composition, we can use asteroseismology to probe the internal chemical composition of stars where no direct observations are possible. In this paper I focus on main sequence stars Am, lambda bootis, and HgMn stars and discuss what we can learn of mixing processes in thos…
Modern investigations of magnetic chemically peculiar stars reveal a variety of complex processes in their atmospheres. Realistic spectrum synthesis modelling of these objects has to take into account anomalous chemical composition, strong magnetic field and chemical stratification. These effects complicate calculation of theoretical spectra, especially when one has to deal with large number of lines and wide spectral regions. To overcome the formidable problem of comparing model and observed spectra for magnetic chemically peculiar stars, a new suite of spectrum synthesis programs was develop…
Radio observations of the magnetic chemically peculiar star CU Vir, carried out with the VLA in three different days, show that the radio emission at 20 cm is characterized by a strong enhancement at particular rotational phases. This radio emission is found to be right hand polarized with a degree of polarization close to 100 %. As common for this class of stars, the magnetic axis of CU Vir is oblique with respect to the rotational axis. By comparing the 20 cm radio light curve with the effective magnetic field available from the literature, a coincidence of the main peaks of the radio emissi…
Aims. In order to better model massive B-type stars, we need to understand the physical processes taking place in slowly pulsating B (SPB) stars, chemically peculiar Bp stars, and non-pulsating normal B stars co-existing in the same part of the H-R diagram. Methods. We carry out a comparative study between samples of confirmed and well-studied SPB stars and a sample of well-studied Bp stars with known periods and magnetic field strengths. We determine their evolutionary state using accurate HIPPARCOS parallaxes and Geneva photometry. We discuss the occurrence and strengths of magnetic fields a…
Context: Hyper-velocity stars are suggested to originate from the dynamical interaction of binary stars with the supermassive black hole in the Galactic centre (GC), which accelerates one component of the binary to beyond the Galactic escape velocity. Aims: The evolutionary status and GC origin of the HVS SDSS J113312.12+010824.9 (HVS7) is constrained from a detailed study of its stellar parameters and chemical composition. Methods: High-resolution spectra of HVS7 obtained with UVES on the ESO VLT were analysed using state-of-the-art NLTE/LTE modelling techniques that can account for a chemica…
In the last few years we have developed stellar model atmospheres which included effects of anomalous abundances and strong magnetic field. The full treatment of anomalous Zeeman splitting and polarized radiative transfer were introduced in the model atmosphere calculations for the first time. In this investigation we present results of modelling the atmosphere of one of the most extreme magnetic chemically peculiar stars, HD137509. This Bp SiCrFe star has the mean surface magnetic field modulus of about 29kG. We use the recent version of the line-by-line opacity sampling stellar model atmosph…
We present further evidence that the magnetic chemically peculiar stars (CP2) of the upper main sequence already occur at very early stages of the stellar evolution, significantly before they reach 30% of their life-time on the main sequence. This result is especially important for models dealing with dynamo theories, angular momentum loss during the pre- as well as main sequence and evolutionary calculations for CP2 stars. Results from the literature either derived for objects in the Hyades and the UMa cluster or from the Hipparcos mission contradict each other. A way out of this dilemma is t…
The detection of magnetic chemically peculiar (CP2) stars in open clusters of extragalactic systems can give observational answers to many unsolved questions. The mean percentage of CP2 stars in the Milky Way is of the order of 5% for the spectral range from early B- to F-type, luminosity class V objects. The origin of the CP2 phenomenon seems to be closely connected to the overall metallicity and global magnetic field environment. The theoretical models are still only tested by observations in the Milky Way. It is therefore essential to provide high quality observations in rather different gl…
We have summarized all Delta a measurements for galactic field stars (1474 objects) from the literature published over more than two decades. These measurements were, for the first time, compiled and homogeneously analyzed. The Delta a intermediate band photometric system samples the depth of the 520nm flux depression by comparing the flux at the center with the adjacent regions with bandwidths of 11 to 23nm. Because it was slightly modified over the last three decades, we checked for systematic trends for the different measurements but found no correlations whatsoever. The Delta a photometric…
We present new orbits for sixteen Ap spectroscopic binaries, four of which might in fact be Am stars, and give their orbital elements. Four of them are SB2 systems: HD 5550, HD 22128, HD 56495 and HD 98088. The twelve other stars are : HD 9996, HD 12288, HD 40711, HD 54908, HD 65339, HD 73709, HD 105680, HD 138426, HD 184471, HD 188854, HD 200405 and HD 216533. Rough estimates of the individual masses of the components of HD 65339 (53 Cam) are given, combining our radial velocities with the results of speckle interferometry and with Hipparcos parallaxes. Considering the mass functions of 74 sp…
We report measurements of eight native (i.e., released directly from the comet nucleus) volatiles (H2O, HCN, CH4, C2H2, C2H6, CO, H2CO, and CH3OH) in comet 8P/Tuttle using NIRSPEC at Keck 2. Comet Tuttle reveals a truly unusual composition, distinct from that of any comet observed to date at infrared wavelengths. The prominent enrichment of methanol relative to water contrasts the depletions of other molecules, especially C2H2 and HCN. We suggest that the nucleus of 8P/Tuttle may contain two cometesimals characterized by distinct volatile composition. The relative abundances C2/CN, C2/OH, and …
To search photometric variability in chemically peculiar A type stars in the northern hemisphere. High-speed photometric observations of Ap and Am star candidates have been carried out from ARIES (Manora Peak, Nainital) using a three-channel fast photometer attached to the ARIES 104-cm Sampurnanand telescope. This paper presents three new variables: HD 113878, HD 118660 and HD 207561. During the time span of the survey (1999 December to 2004 January) pulsations of the $δ$ Sct type were also found for the two evolved Am stars HD 102480 and HD 98851, as reported in Joshi et al. (2002, 2003). Add…
In order to put strict observational constraints on the evolutionary status of the magnetic chemically peculiar stars (CP2) of the upper main sequence, we have investigated a well established sample of galactic field CP2 objects within a radius of 200pc from the Sun in the (X,Y) plane. In total, 182 stars with accurate parallax measurements from the Hipparcos satellite were divided into Si, SiCr and SrCrEu subgroups based on classification resolution data from the literature. Primarily, it was investigated if the CP2 phenomenon occurs at very early stages of the stellar evolution, significantl…
We present preliminary results of the generalized Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of light curves of 82 magnetic chemically peculiar (further mCP) stars applied to 54 thousand individual photometric observations in the uvby and Hp colours taken from the "On-line database of photometric observations of mCP stars". We show that every of the observed light curves (LCs) can be, with a sufficient accuracy, represented using five parameters of a harmonic polynomial of the second order, and that the third order and higher harmonics reflect only a noise. We found that a prevailing majority of the u…
In this paper we present a three-dimensional numerical model for the radio emission of Magnetic Chemically Peculiar stars, on the hypothesis that energetic electrons emit by the gyrosynchrotron mechanism. For this class of radio stars, characterized by a mainly dipolar magnetic field whose axis is tilted with respect to the rotational axis, the geometry of the magnetosphere and its deformation due to the stellar rotation are determined. The radio emitting region is determined by the physical conditions of the magnetosphere and of the stellar wind. Free-free absorption by the thermal plasma tra…
We calculate the uvby light curves of the helium-strong chemically peculiar (CP) star HD 37776. Assuming that the chemical peculiarity influences the monochromatic radiative flux due to mainly the bound-free processes and using the model of the surface distribution of helium and silicon on HD 37776, as derived from spectroscopy, we calculate the emergent fluxes for a series of its rotational phases. We show that it is possible to consistently simulate light curves of a chemically peculiar star and that the basic properties of variability of helium CP stars can be understood in terms of the mod…
The Ap star HD3980 appears to be a promising roAp candidate based on its fundamental parameters, leading us to search for rapid pulsations with the VLT UV-Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES). A precise Hipparcos parallax and estimated temperature of 8100K place HD3980 in the middle of the theoretical instability strip for rapidly oscillating Ap stars, about halfway through its main sequence evolution stage. The star has a strong, variable magnetic field, as is typical of the cool magnetic Ap stars. Dipole model parameters were determined from VLT observations using FORS1. From Doppler shift mea…
We have obtained a UVES spectrum of a slowly rotating strongly magnetic Ap star, HD 144897, that exhibits very large overabundances of rare-earth elements. Here we present a detailed spectral analysis of this object, also taking into account effects of non-uniform vertical distribution (stratification) of chemical elements. We have determined the photospheric abundances of 40 ions. For seven elements (Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe), we have obtained a stratification model that allow us to produce a satisfactory fit to the observed profiles of spectral lines of various strength. REEs abundances, t…
The Delta a photometric system provides an efficient observational method to identify and distinguish magnetic and several other types of chemically peculiar (CP) stars of spectral types B to F from other classes of stars in the same range of effective temperatures. We have developed a synthetic photometric system which can be used to explore the capability of model atmospheres with individual element abundances to predict photometric Delta a magnitudes which measure the extent of the flux depression around 5200A found in different types of CP stars. In this first paper, we confirm the observe…
We present a comprehensive statistical investigation of the evolution of magnetic CP stars, aimed at providing constraints to the theories that deal with the origin of the magnetic field in these stars. We have collected from the literature data for 150 magnetic CP stars with accurate Hipparcos parallaxes. We have retrieved from the ESO archive 142 FORS1 observations of circularly polarized spectra for 100 stars. From these spectra we have measured the mean longitudinal magnetic field, and discovered 48 new magnetic CP stars (five of which belonging to the rare class of rapidly oscillating Ap …
We simulate light curves of the helium strong chemically peculiar star HD 37776 assuming that the observed periodic light variations originate as a result of inhomogeneous horizontal distribution of chemical elements on the surface of a rotating star. We show that chemical peculiarity influences the monochromatic radiative flux, mainly due to bound-free processes. Using the model of the distribution of silicon and helium on HD 37776 surface, derived from spectroscopy, we calculate a photometric map of the surface and consequently the uvby light curves of this star. Basically, the predicted lig…
We calculated spectral energy distribution of the helium strong chemically peculiar star HD 37776 using adequate model atmospheres. We show that the chemical peculiarity influences the stellar energy distribution. Consequently, spots of peculiar chemical composition on the surface of a rotating star may cause detectable light variations of the star. However, the observed light variations are not likely caused by an uneven surface distribution of helium, but may be due to spots of metals (mainly carbon).
We have investigated 1008 objects in the area of five intermediate age open clusters (NGC 2099, NGC 3114, NGC 6204, NGC 6705 and NGC 6756) via the narrow band Delta a-system. The detection limit for photometric peculiarity is very low (always less than 0.009mag) due to the high number of individual frames used (193 in total). We have detected six peculiar objects in NGC 6705 and NGC 6756 from which one in the latter is almost certainly an unreddened late type foreground star. The remaining five stars are probably cluster members and bona fide chemically peculiar objects (two are lambda Bootis …
Ap/Bp stars are magnetic chemically peculiar early A and late B type stars of the main sequence. They exhibit peculiar surface abundance anomalies that are thought to be the result of gravitational settling and radiative levitation. The physics of diffusion in these stars are reviewed briefly and some model predictions are discussed. While models reproduce some observations reasonably well, more work is needed before the behavior of diffusing elements in a complex magnetic field is fully understood.
In a sample of six young open clusters we investigated 1753 objects using the narrow band, three filter Delta a photometric system resulting in the detection of eleven bona-fide magnetic chemically peculiar (CP) stars and five Be or metal-weak stars. The results for the distant cluster NGC 3105 is most important because of the still unknown influence of the global metallicity gradient of the Milky Way. These findings confirm that CP stars are present in open clusters of very young ages (log t > 6.90) at galactocentric distances up to 11.4 kpc. For all programme clusters the age, reddening, and…
Major improvements in models of chemically peculiar stars have been achieved in the past few years. With these new models it has been possible to test quantitatively some of the processes involved in the formation of abundance anomalies and their effect on stellar structure. The models of metallic A (Am) stars have shown that a much deeper mixing has to be present to account for observed abundance anomalies. This has implications on their variability, which these models also reproduce qualitatively. These models also have implications for other chemically inhomogeneous stars such as HgMn B sta…
It is unclear whether chemically peculiar stars of the upper main sequence represent a class completely distinct from normal A-type stars, or whether there exists a continuous transition from the normal to the most peculiar late F- to early B-type stars. A systematic abundance analysis of open cluster early-type stars would help to relate the observed differences of the chemical abundances of the photospheres to other stellar characteristics, without being concerned by possible different original chemical composition. Furthermore, if a continuous transition region from the very peculiar to the…
The connection between age, rotation and chemical abundance of magnetic Ap stars is poorly understood. Using open clusters, we are able to study samples of stars that are both co-eval and co-environmental. By determining rotation and chemical abundance for Ap star members of clusters with various ages, the variations of these properties as a function of age and environment can be derived. All four probable Ap star members of the open cluster NGC 6475, as well as one normal late B star, were studied using detailed spectrum synthesis of high resolution UVES-POP spectra. Probable cluster membersh…
We have proposed the new explanation of some magnetic chemically peculiar (MCP) stars anomalies, which is based on assumption that such stars can be the close binary systems with a secondary component being neutron star. Within this hypothesis one can naturally explain the main anomalous features of MCP stars: first of all, an existence of the short-lived radioactive isotopes detected in some stars (like Przybylski's star and HR465), and some others peculiarities (e.g. the behavior of CU Vir in radio range, the phenomenon of the roAp stars).
Rapidly oscillating Ap stars consitute a unique class of pulsators to study nonradial oscillations under some - even for stars - unusual physical conditions. These stars are chemically peculiar, they have strong magnetic fields, and they often pulsate in several high-order acoustic modes simultaneously. We discuss here an excitation mechanism for short-period oscillation modes based on the classical kappa mechanism. We particularly stress the conditions that must be fulfilled for successful driving. Specifically, we discuss the roles of chemical peculiarity and strong magnetic field on the osc…
The first CCD photometric investigation of the open cluster NGC 7296 up to now was performed within the narrow band Delta a photometric system, which enables us to detect peculiar objects. A deeper investigation of that cluster followed, using the standard BVR-Bessel filter set. The age and E(B-V) was determined independently to log t= 8.0 and 0.15 respectively by using Delta a and broadband photometry. In total five Be/Ae objects and two metal-weak stars showing significant negative Delta a-values as well as one classical chemically peculiar star could be identified within that intermediate a…
The detection of magnetic chemically peculiar (CP2) stars in open clusters of the Milky Way can be used to study the influence of different galactic environments on the (non-)presence of peculiarities, which has to be taken into account in stellar evolution models. Furthermore it is still unknown if the CP2 phenomenon evolves, i.e. does the strength of the peculiarity feature at 5200A, increase or decrease with age. We have observed eight young to intermediate age open clusters in the Delta a photometric system. This intermediate band photometric system samples the depth of the 5200A, flux dep…
We present the results from 135 hours of nearly continuous time series photometry on the ``hybrid'' (H-rich) PG1159 variable star HS2324+3944, obtained in August-September 1997. The power spectrum of the data shows several frequencies (about 20 or more), concentrated in three narrow and very crowded regions near 475, 390 and 950 microHz in decreasing amplitude order. Most (if not all) of the peaks in the latter region are linear combinations of the high-amplitude frequencies between 455 and 500 microHz. If we divide the data set into two equal parts, the power spectra are different. This is pr…
Large wavelength shifts of infrared triplet lines of Ca II have been observed in the spectra of HgMn and magnetic Ap stars. They have been attributed to the heavy calcium isotopes, including Ca-48. One member of the triplet, $λ$8542, had been either unavailable, or of poor quality in earlier spectra. The present material shows conclusively that the stellar $λ$8542 shifts are consistent with an interpretation in terms of Ca-48. We find no relation between isotopic shifts of the Ca II triplet lines, and those of Hg II $λ$3984. There is a marginal indication that the shifts are {\it anticorrelate…
The search for chemically peculiar (CP) stars in open clusters using photoelectric photometry sampling the presence of the characteristic flux depression feature at 5200A via the Delta a-system (Maitzen 1976) has so far delivered data for objects usually no more distant than 1000 pc from the Sun. If one intends to study the presence of CP stars at larger distances from the Sun, classical photometry has to be replaced by CCD photometry. For the first time, our investigation presents the results of CCD-photometry in the Delta a-system for a rich open cluster which is at a distance clearly beyond…
We continue our survey for magnetic chemically peculiar (CP2) stars in galactic open clusters to shed more light on their origin and evolution. To study the group of CP2 stars, it is essential to find these objects in different galactic environments and at a wide range of evolutionary stages. The knowledge of open clusters ages and metallicities can help to find a correlation of these parameters with the (non-)presence of peculiarities which has to be taken into account in stellar evolution models. The intermediate band Delta a photometric system samples the depth of the 5200A flux depression …
Spectra of four non-magnetic chemically peculiar late B type stars (HgMn) stars are analysed to detect periodic spectral line variations (LPVs). A procedure developed to study LPVs in Slowly Pulsating B stars has been adopted as pulsational properties of HgMn stars should be expected to be similar. In the preliminary results discussed here no conclusive evidence for periodic LPVs was uncovered. A more sensitive re-analysis of the data is under way.
A variety of magnetohydrodynamic mechanisms that may play a role in magnetic, chemically peculiar (mCP) stars is reviewed. These involve dynamo mechanisms in laminar flows as well as turbulent environments, and magnetic instabilities of poloidal and toroidal fields as well as combinations of the two. While the proto-stellar phase makes the survival of primordial fields difficult, the variety of magnetic field configurations on mCP stars may be an indication for that they are instability remnants, but there is no process which is clearly superior in explaining the strong fields.
