The generation and stability of magnetic fields in CP stars

A variety of magnetohydrodynamic mechanisms that may play a role in magnetic, chemically peculiar (mCP) stars is reviewed. These involve dynamo mechanisms in laminar flows as well as turbulent environments, and magnetic instabilities of poloidal and toroidal fields as well as combinations of the two. While the proto-stellar phase makes the survival of primordial fields difficult, the variety of magnetic field configurations on mCP stars may be an indication for that they are instability remnants, but there is no process which is clearly superior in explaining the strong fields.

Stability of magnetic configurations containing the toroidal and axial fields

Stability properties of magnetic-field configurations containing the toroidal and axial field are considered. The stability is treated by making use of linear analysis. It is shown that the conditions required for the onset of instability are essentially different from those given by the necessary condition $d (s B_ϕ)/ds > 0$, where $s$ is the cylindrical radius. The growth rate of instability is calculated for a wide range of the parameters. We argue that the instability can operate in two different regimes depending on the strength of the axial field and the profile of the toroidal field.

Do magnetic fields contribute to the dynamical stability of the secondaries of CVs against mass transfer?

We show the presence of CVs with orbital periods in the range 3.5-7 h and mass ratios q=M2/M1 above the critical values for dynamically stable mass transfer. We explore whether the magnetic fields produced in the secondaries alter the theoretical mass ratio limits allowing dynamical stability. Since magnetic fields change the specific heats and the polytropic exponent gamma of the gas in the convective envelope, the mass-radius adiabatic exponent xi_ad also changes. Numerical Modeling of AGN Jets: Formation of Magnetically Dominated Lobes and Stability Properties of Current-carrying Jets

We argue the behavior of Poynting flux-dominated outflows from AGN in the galactic cluster systems by performing three-dimensional MHD simulations within the framework of the "magnetic tower" model. Of particular interests are the structure of MHD waves, the cylindrical radial force balance, the (de)collimation, and the stability properties of magnetic tower jets. Transition between the jet/lobe and the formation of wiggling jet by growing current-driven instability are discussed.

Stability of Magnetic Equilibria in Radio Balloons

Current-carrying flows, in the laboratory and in astrophysical jets, can form remarkably stable magnetic structures. Decades of experience shows that such flows often build equilibria that reverse field directions, evolving to an MHD Taylor state, which has remarkable stability properties. Strange matter and its stability in presence of magnetic field

We study the effect of a magnetic field on the interacting quark matter and apply to strange star. We considere the low temperature approximation to strange matter. We find that the interacting strange quark matter is more stable compare to free quark gas in presence of strong external magnetic field with zero and finite temperature. We then calculate strange star structure parameters such as mass and radius and find that the strange star is more compact for interacting quark matter than free quark matter in presence of strong magnetic field.

The stability of poloidal magnetic fields in rotating stars

The stability of large-scale magnetic fields in rotating stars is explored, using 3D numerical hydrodynamics to follow the evolution of an initial poloidal field. It is found that the field is subject to an instability, located initially on the magnetic equator, whereby the gas is displaced in a direction parallel to the magnetic axis. If the magnetic axis is parallel to the rotation axis, the rotation does not affect the initial linear growth of the instability, but does restrict the growth of the instability outside of the equatorial zone. Electrons as Quasi-Bosons in Strong Magnetic Fields and the Stability of Magnetars

Following the recent ideas of Dryzek, Kato, Muñoz and Singleton \cite{R1} (henceforth we call this paper as R1), that the composite system consisting of an electron along with its screened electric field and within the sphere of influence, the trapped magnetic field of white dwarf can behave like a boson, we have argued that such an exotic transition (bosonization) of electronic component in strongly magnetized neutron star matter in $β$-equilibrium can make the existence of magnetars physically viable.

Stability of cold fronts in clusters: is magnetic field necessary?

Cold fronts - sharp discontinuities recently discovered by Chandra in many clusters of galaxies - are believed to be due to a hot gas flow over a colder gravitationally bound gas cloud. We analyze the stability of the fronts with respect to Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and show that an intrinsic width of the interface of the order of a few per cent of the curvature radius strongly limits the growth of perturbation. The stability of MHD Taylor-Couette flow

The linear marginal instability of an MHD Taylor-Couette flow of infinite vertical extension is considered. For hydrodynamically unstable flows the minimum Reynolds number exists even without a magnetic field, but there are also solutions with smaller Reynolds numbers for certain (weak) magnetic fields. Three-dimensional stability of magnetically confined mountains on accreting neutron stars

We examine the hydromagnetic stability of magnetically confined mountains, which arise when material accumulates at the magnetic poles of an accreting neutron star. We extend a previous axisymmetric stability analysis by performing three-dimensional simulations using the ideal-magnetohydrodynamic (ideal-MHD) code \textsc{zeus-mp}, investigating the role played by boundary conditions, accreted mass, stellar curvature, and (briefly) toroidal magnetic field strength. Stability Properties of Magnetic Tower Jets

Stability properties of ``magnetic tower'' jets propagating in the gravitationally stratified background have been examined by performing three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations. Stability of toroidal magnetic fields in the solar tachocline and beneath

Stability of toroidal magnetic field in a stellar radiation zone is considered for the cases of uniform and differential rotation. In the rigidly rotating radiative core shortly below the tachocline, the critical magnetic field for instability is about 600 G. The unstable disturbances for slightly supercritical fields have short radial scales ~1 Mm. The Stability of Primordial Magnetic Fields Produced by Phase Transitions

Primordial magnetic fields seem to be a generic relic of phase transitions in the early universe. We consider a primordial electromagnetic field formed as a result of a second-order phase transition, and show that it is stable to thermal fluctuations in the period immediately following. We also show how such a field arises in first order phase transitions. In both cases there is a transitive electric field produced during the transition.
