Motivated by recent experiments on cold atomic gases in ultra high finesse optical cavities, we consider the problem of a two-band Bose--Hubbard model coupled to quantum light. Photoexcitation promotes carriers between the bands and we study the non-trivial interplay between Mott insulating behavior and superfluidity. The model displays a global U(1) X U(1) symmetry which supports the coexistence of Mott insulating and superfluid phases, and yields a rich phase diagram with multicritical points. This symmetry property is shared by several other problems of current experimental interest, including two-component Bose gases in optical lattices, and the bosonic BEC-BCS crossover problem for atom-molecule mixtures induced by a Feshbach resonance. We corroborate our findings by numerical simulations.
We show that polaritons in an array of interacting micro-cavities with strong atom-photon coupling can form a two-component Bose-Hubbard model. Both polariton species are thereby protected against spontaneous emission as their atomic part is stored in two ground states of the atoms. The parameters of the effective model can be tuned via the driving strength of external lasers. We also describe a method to measure the number statistics in one cavity for each polariton species independently.
We propose a scheme which can realize an extended two-component Bose-Hubbard model using polaritons confined in an array of optical cavities. In addition to the density-dependent interactions, this model also contains nonlinear coupling terms between the two components of the polariton. Using a mean-field calculation, we obtain the phase diagram which shows how these terms affect the transition between the Mott insulator and the superfluid phase. In addition, we employ both a perturbation approach and an exact diagonalization method to gain more insights into the phase diagram.
Asymmetric two-leg Hubbard ladders with different on-site interactions $U_y$ and hoppings $t_y$ on each leg are investigated using the density matrix renormalization group method and exact diagonalizations. The pairing found in symmetric ladders is robust against the introduction of the leg asymmetry. When studying pairing, one-band Hubbard ladder models are better described as one-dimensional correlated two-band models than as sublattices of higher dimensional systems. The asymmetric Hubbard ladder provides us with a simple model for studying pairing in the crossover regime between charge tra…
Recent experiments on strongly coupled cavity quantum electrodynamics present new directions in "matter-light" systems. Following on from our previous work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 135301 (2009)] we investigate Bose-Hubbard models coupled to a cavity light field. We discuss the emergence of photoexcitations or "polaritons" within the Mott phase, and obtain the complete variational phase diagram. Exploiting connections to the super-radiance transition in the Dicke model we discuss the nature of polariton condensation within this novel state. Incorporating the effects of carrier superfluidity, we …
Spectral properties of the Bose-Hubbard model and a recently proposed coupled-cavity model are studied by means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations in one dimension. Both models exhibit a quantum phase transition from a Mott insulator to a superfluid phase. The dynamic structure factor $S(k,ω)$ and the single-particle spectrum $A(k,ω)$ are calculated, focusing on the parameter region around the phase transition from the Mott insulator with density one to the superfluid phase, where correlations are important. The strongly interacting nature of the superfluid phase manifests itself in terms of a…
Local spin fluctuations provide the glue for orbital-singlet spin-triplet pairing in the doped Mott insulating regime of multi-orbital Hubbard models. At large Hubbard repulsion $U$, the pairing susceptibility is nevertheless very low, because the pairing interaction cannot overcome the suppression of charge fluctuations. Using nonequilibrium dynamical mean field simulations of the two-orbital Hubbard model, we show that out of equilibrium the pairing susceptibility in this large-$U$ regime can be strongly enhanced by creating a photo-induced population of the relevant charge states, and that …
To shed light into the pairing mechanism of possible spin-triplet superconductors (TMTSF)$_2$X and Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, we study the competition among various spin singlet and triplet pairing channels in the Hubbard model by calculating the pairing interaction vertex using the ground state quantum Monte Carlo technique. We model (TMTSF)$_2$X by a quarter-filled quasi-one dimensional (quasi-1D) Hubbard model, and the $γ$ band of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ by a two dimensional (2D) Hubbard model with a band filling of $\sim 4/3$. For the quasi-1D system, we find that triplet $f$-wave pairing not only dominates over…
We consider the Hubbard model and its extensions on bipartite lattices. We define a dynamical group based on the $η$-pairing operators introduced by C.N.Yang, and define coherent pairing states, which are combinations of eigenfunctions of $η$-operators. These states permit exact calculations of numerous physical properties of the system, including energy, various fluctuations and correlation functions, including pairing ODLRO to all orders. This approach is complementary to BCS, in that these are superconducting coherent states associated with the exact model, although they are not eigenstates…
We revisit the $η$-pairing states in Hubbard models and explore their connections to quantum many-body scars to discover a universal scars mechanism. $η$-pairing occurs due to an algebraic structure known as a Spectrum Generating Algebra (SGA), giving rise to equally spaced towers of eigenstates in the spectrum. We generalize the original $η$-pairing construction and show that several Hubbard-like models on arbitrary graphs exhibit SGAs, including ones with disorder and spin-orbit coupling. We further define a Restricted Spectrum Generating Algebra (RSGA) and give examples of perturbations to …
We present a microscopic theory of fluctuation-mediated pairing mechanism in a two-dimensional extended Hubbard model. In contrast to conventional wisdom, odd-frequency spin-triplet pairing can be stabilized near the spin-density-wave critical point. Favorable conditions for the odd-frequency pairing are the presence of geometrical frustration and off-site Coulomb interaction.
We solve the attractive Hubbard model for arbitrary interaction strengths within dynamical mean-field theory. We compute the transition temperature for superconductivity and analyze electron pairing in the normal phase. The normal state is a Fermi liquid at weak coupling and a non-Fermi liquid state with a spin gap at strong coupling. Away from half-filling, the quasi-particle weight vanishes discontinuously at the transition between the two normal states.
The Hubbard model and its extensions are important microscopic models for understanding high- $T_c$ superconductivity in cuprates. In the model with next-nearest-neighbor hopping $t'$ (the $t'$- Hubbard model), pairing is strongly influenced by $t'$ . In particular, a recent study on a width-4 cylinder observed quasi-long-rage superconducting order, associated with a negative $t'$ , which was taken to imply superconductivity in the two-dimensional (2D) limit. In this work we study more carefully pairing in the width-4 $t'$-Hubbard model. We show that in this specific system, the pairing symmet…
An extensive Quantum Monte Carlo calculation is performed for the two-leg Hubbard ladder model to clarify whether the singlet pairing correlation decays slowly, which is predicted from the weak-coupling theory but controversial from numerical studies. Our result suggests that the discreteness of energy levels in finite systems affects the correlation enormously, where the enhanced pairing correlation is indeed detected if we make the energy levels of the bonding and anti-bonding bands lie close to each other at the Fermi level to mimic the thermodynamic limit.
Quantum Monte Carlo is used to investigate the possibility of d_{x^2-y^2} superconductivity in the two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model. A small energy scale relevant to possible pairing requires a care (i.e., sufficiently small level separation between the $k$ points $(δk,π-δk')$ and $(π-δk'',δk''')$ with small $δk$'s) to detect enhanced correlations in finite-size studies, as motivated from a previous study on Hubbard ladders. Our calculation indeed detects long-tailed enhancements in the d_{x^2-y^2} pairing correlation when the system is near, but not exactly at, half-filling.
We address some open questions regarding the phase diagram of the one-dimensional Hubbard model with asymmetric hopping coefficients and balanced species. In the attractive regime we present a numerical study of the passage from on-site pairing dominant correlations at small asymmetries to charge-density waves in the region with markedly different hopping coefficients. In the repulsive regime we exploit two analytical treatments in the strong- and weak-coupling regimes in order to locate the onset of phase separation at small and large asymmetries respectively.
We propose the two-leg fermion-ladder models for SU(2|2) and SU(4) cases. The former is exactly the extended Hubbard model proposed by Essler, Korepin and Schoutens. The later is a new model also with $η$-pairing symmetry which is important for superconductivity. This new extension of the Hubbard model can be solved exactly.

Cluster dynamical mean field calculations are used to construct the superconducting gap function of the two dimensional Hubbard model. The frequency dependence of the imaginary part of the gap function indicates that the pairing is dominated by fluctuations at two characteristic frequencies: one at the scale of the hopping matrix element $t$ and one at a much lower scale. The lower frequency component becomes more important as the doping is reduced into the pseudogap regime. Comparison to available information on the spin fluctuation spectrum of the model suggests that the superconductivity ar…
The dominating superconducting pairing symmetry of the kagome-lattice Hubbard model is investigated using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. The superconducting instability occurs when doping the correlated insulators formed by the Hubbard interaction near the Dirac filling, and the superconducting state exhibits an electron-hole asymmetry. Among the pairing symmetries allowed, we demonstrate that the dominating channel is d-wave in the hole-doped case. This opens the possibility of condensation into an unconventional $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$ phase, which is characterized by an integer t…
Numerical studies of the Hubbard model and its strong-coupling form, the t-J model, show evidence for antiferromagnetic, d_{x^2-y^2}-pairing and stripe correlations which remind one of phenomena seen in the layered cuprate materials. Here, we ask what these numerical results imply about various scenarios for the pairing mechanism.
We study mesoscopic pairing in the one dimensional repulsive Hubbard model and its interplay with the BCS model in the canonical ensemble. The key tool is comparing the Bethe ansatz equations of the two models in the limit of small Coulomb repulsion. For the ordinary Hubbard interaction the BCS Bethe equations with infinite pairing coupling are recovered; a finite pairing is obtained by considering a further density-dependent phase-correlation in the hopping amplitude of the Hubbard model. We find that spin degrees of freedom in the Hubbard ground state are arranged in a state of the BCS type,…
In order to shed light whether the `even-odd conjecture' (even numbers of legs will superconduct accompanied by a spin gap while odd ones do not) for correlated electrons in ladder systems, the pairing correlation is studied for the Hubbard model on a two- and three-leg ladders. We have employed both the weak-coupling renormalization group and the quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method for strong interactions. For the two-leg Hubbard ladder, a systematic QMC (with a controlled level spacings) has detected an enhanced pairing correlation, which is consistent with the weak-coupling prediction. We also…
We focus our quantitative analysis on the stability of the insulator state in the Hubbard model at a half-filling. Taking into account large-scale fluctuations (with a long relaxation time) of the on-site Coulomb repulsion, we consider the possibility of realizing a stabile state which is characterized by pairing for electrons. The pairing mechanism is as follows: due to fluctuations of on-site repulsion of electrons, holes, as excited states, are formed electron pairs. The bare values of on-site Coulomb repulsion and its fluctuations, for which the states with electron pairing are stable, are…
In the ground state of the doped two-leg Hubbard ladder there are power-law decaying d_{x^2-y^2}-type pairing correlations. It is important to know the strength and the temperature scale of these correlations. For this purpose, we have performed determinantal Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations of the reducible particle-particle interaction in the Hubbard ladder. In this paper, we report on these calculations and show that, at sufficiently low temperatures, resonant particle-particle scattering takes place in the d_{x^2-y^2} pairing channel for certain values of the model parameters. The QM…
Quantum Monte Carlo is used to calculate various pairing correlations of the 2D Hubbard model possessing band features experimentally observed in the cuprates. In the hole-doped case, where the Fermi level lies close to the van Hove singularities around $(0,π)$, the d$_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing correlation is selectively enhanced, while in the electron-doped case, where the singularities are far below the Fermi level and the Fermi surface runs through $(\pm π/2,\pm π/2)$, both d$_{x^2-y^2}$ and d$_{xy}$ correlations are enhanced with the latter having a $\sqrt{2}\times \sqrt{2}$ structure. The two pa…
We investigate formation and condensation of fermion pairs in cold-atom quantum simulators for extended Hubbard models ($UV$ models) with body-centered-cubic (BCC) optical lattices in the dilute limit, predicting small and light pairs. Pair mass, radius, and binding conditions are calculated, and used to compute transition temperatures. We predict that: (a) local pairs form in BCC optical lattices and binding energies can be large; (b) for particular cases where onsite $U$ and intersite $V$ are attractive with similar size, pairs are both small and light; and (c) pairs of $^6$Li atoms Bose--Ei…
Antiferromagnetic and d_{x2-y2}-pairing correlations appear delicately balanced in the 2D Hubbard model. Whether doping can tip the balance to pairing is unclear and models with additional interaction terms have been studied. In one of these, the square of a local hopping kinetic energy H_W was found to favor pairing. However, such a term can be separated into a number of simpler processes and one would like to know which of these terms are responsible for enhancing the pairing. Here we analyze these processes for a 2-leg Hubbard ladder.
We analyze the influence of phonons on the d-wave pairing instability in the Hubbard model on the two-dimensional square lattice at weak to moderate interaction U, using a functional renormalization group scheme with frequency-dependent interaction vertices. As measured by the pairing scale, the B1g buckling mode enhances the pairing, while other phonon modes decrease the pairing. When various phonon modes are included together, the net effect on the scale is small. However, in situations where d-wave superconductivity and other tendencies, e.g. antiferromagnetism, are closely competing, the c…
We describe a quantum simulator for the Hubbard--Holstein model (HHM), comprising two dressed Rydberg atom species held in a monolayer by independent painted potentials, predicting that boson-mediated preformed pairing, and Berezinskii--Kosterlitz--Thouless (BKT) transition temperatures are experimentally accessible. The HHM is important for modeling the essential physics of unconventional superconductors. Experimentally realizable quantum simulators for HHMs are needed: (1) since HHMs are difficult to solve numerically and analytically, (2) to explore how competition between electron-phonon i…
We study the superconducting instabilities of singlet and triplet pairing in a two-dimensional Hubbard model on the basis of the third-order perturbation theory (TOPT). We investigate the effect of the vertex correction that is given by TOPT, comparing with the study with only the second-order effective interaction. In our results, a stable p-wave pairing state spreads from low to intermediate electron density. A dx2-y2-wave pairing is dominant for the high density near a half-filling. It is shown that the vertex correction plays an essential role in making the p-wave pairing state dominant.
We show that optical excitation of the Mott insulating phase of the one-dimensional Hubbard model can create a state possessing two of the hallmarks of superconductivity: a nonvanishing charge stiffness and long-ranged pairing correlation. By employing the exact diagonalization method, we find that the superposition of the $η$-pairing eigenstates induced by the optical pump exhibits a nonvanishing charge stiffness and a pairing correlation that decays very slowly with system size in sharp contrast to the behavior of an ensemble of thermally excited eigenstates, which has a vanishing charge sti…
We present the results of a quantum Monte Carlo study of the extended $s$ and the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing correlation functions for the two-dimensional Hubbard model, computed with the constrained-path method. For small lattice sizes and weak interactions, we find that the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing correlations are stronger than the extended $s$ pairing correlations and are positive when the pair separation exceeds several lattice constants. As the system size or the interaction strength increases, the magnitude of the long-range part of both correlation functions vanishes.
Intertwining of spin, charge and pairing correlations in the repulsive two-dimensional Hubbard model is shown through unrestricted variational calculations, with projected wavefunctions free of symmetry breaking. A crossover from incommensurate antiferromagnetism to stripe order naturally emerges in the hole-doped region when increasing the on-site coupling. Although effective pairing interactions are identified, they are strongly fragmented in several modes including d-wave pairing and more exotic channels related to an underlying stripe. We demonstrate that the entanglement of a mean-field w…
A microscopic theory of superconductivity in the extended Hubbard model which takes into account the intersite Coulomb repulsion and electron-phonon interaction is developed in the limit of strong correlations. The Dyson equation for normal and pair Green functions expressed in terms of the Hubbard operators is derived. The self-energy is obtained in the noncrossing approximation. In the normal state, antiferromagnetic short-range correlations result in the electronic spectrum with a narrow bandwidth. We calculate superconducting Tc by taking into account the pairing mediated by charge and spi…
We present a method to compute pairing fluctuations on top of the Gutzwiller approximation (GA). Our investigations are based on a charge-rotational invariant GA energy functional which is expanded up to second order in the pair fluctuations. Equations of motion for the fluctuations lead to a renormalized ladder type approximation. Both spectral functions and corrections to static quantities, like the ground-state energy, are computed. The quality of the method is examined for the single-band Hubbard model where we compare the dynamical pairing correlations for s- and d-wave symmetries with ex…
We rigorously prove that an extended Hubbard model with attraction in two dimensions has an unconventional pairing ground state for any electron filling. The anisotropic spin-0 or anisotropic spin-1 pairing symmetry is realized, depending on a phase parameter characterizing the type of local attractive interactions. In both cases the ground state is unique. It is also shown that in a special case, where there are no electron hopping terms, the ground state has Ising-type Néel order at half-filling, when on-site repulsion is furthermore added. Physical applications are mentioned.
The exact numerical diagonalization and thermodynamics in an ensemble of small Hubbard clusters in the ground state and finite temperatures reveal intriguing insights into the nascent charge and spin pairings, Bose condensation and ferromagnetism in nanoclusters. The phase diagram off half filling strongly suggests the existence of subsequent transitions from electron pairing into unsaturated and saturated ferromagnetic Mott-Hubbard like insulators, driven by electron repulsion. Rigorous criteria for the existence of quantum critical points in the ground state and corresponding crossovers at f…
We consider a modification of the one-dimensional Hubbard model by including an external pairing potential. Guided by analytic bosonization results, we quantitatively determine the grand-canonical zero-temperature phase diagram using both finite and infinite density matrix renormalization group algorithm based on the formalism of matrix product states and matrix product operator, respectively. By computing various local quantities as well as the half-system entanglement, we are able to distinguish between Mott, metallic and superconducting phases. We point out the compressible nature of the Mo…
We have recently developed a canonical transformation of the Hubbard and related models, valid for systems of arbitrary size and for the full plane; this is particularly suited to study hole pairing. In this work we show that exact diagonalization results of the one band Hubbard model for small clusters with periodic boundary conditions agree well with the analytical ones obtained by means of our canonical transformation. In the presence of a pairing instability, the analytic approach allows us to identify the Cooper pairs. They are W=0 pairs, that is, singlet two-hole eigenstates of the Hubba…
The question of whether one should speak of a "pairing glue" in the Hubbard and t-J models is basically a question about the dynamics of the pairing interaction. If the dynamics of the pairing interaction arises from virtual states, whose energies correspond to the Mott gap, and give rise to the exchange coupling J, the interaction is instantaneous on the relative time scales of interest. In this case, while one might speak of an "instantaneous glue", this interaction differs from the traditional picture of a retarded pairing interaction. However, if the energies correspond to the spectrum see…
Pump-probe experiments have suggested the possibility to control electronic correlations by driving infrared-active phonons with resonant midinfrared laser pulses. In this work we study two possible microscopic nonlinear electron-phonon interactions behind these observations, namely coupling of the squared lattice displacement either to the electronic density or to the double occupancy. We investigate whether photon-phonon coupling to quantized light in an optical cavity enables similar control over electronic correlations. We first show that inside a dark cavity electronic interactions increa…
Dynamic cluster Monte Carlo calculations for the doped two-dimensional Hubbard model are used to study the irreducible particle-particle vertex responsible for $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing in this model. This vertex increases with increasing momentum transfer and decreases when the energy transfer exceeds a scale associated with the $Q=(π, π)$ spin susceptibility. Using an exact decomposition of this vertex into a fully irreducible two-fermion vertex and charge and magnetic exchange channels, the dominant part of the effective pairing interaction is found to come from the magnetic, spin S=1 exchange …
The spin-rotationally invariant SU(2) approach to the Hubbard model is extended to accommodate the charge degrees of freedom. Both U(1) and SU(2) gauge transformation are useed to factorize the charge and spin contribution to the original electron operator in terms of the emergent gauge fields. It is shown that these fields play a similar role as phonons in the BCS theory: they provide the "glue" for fermion pairing. By tracing out gauge bosons the form of paired states is established and the role of antiferromagnetic correlations is explicated.
The introduction of non-Hermiticity has greatly enriched the research field of traditional condensed matter physics, and eventually led to a series of discoveries of exotic phenomena. We investigate the effect of non-Hermitian imaginary hoppings on the attractive Hubbard model. The exact bound-pair solution shows that the electron-electron correlation suppresses the non-Hermiticity, resulting in off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO) ground state. In a large negative $U $ limit, the ODLRO ground state corresponds to $η$-spin ferromagnetic states. We also study the system with mixed hopping conf…
The two-leg Hubbard ladder is characterized by the ratio of the inter- to intra-leg hopping t_perp/t, the relative interaction strength U/t and the electron filling. Here, using density matrix renormalization group and Monte Carlo simulations, we examine the dependence of the pairing correlations on these parameters. We find that the pairing correlations are enhanced when the top of the bonding quasiparticle band and the bottom of the antibonding band are near the Fermi level. We present results on the single-particle spectral weight and the antiferromagnetic correlations in order to explain t…
The interactions between holes in the Hubbard model, in the low density, intermediate to strong coupling limit, are investigated by systematically improving mean field calculations. The Configuration Interaction basis set is constructed by applying to local Unrestricted Hartree-Fock configurations all lattice translations and rotations. It is shown that this technique reproduces, correctly, the properties of the Heisenberg model, in the limit of large U. Upon doping, dressed spin polarons in neighboring sites have an increased kinetic energy and an enhanced hopping rate. Both effects are of th…
The mean field Green function solution of the two-band singlet-hole Hubbard model for high-$T\sb{c}$ superconductivity in cuprates (Plakida, N.M. et al., Phys. Rev. B51, 16599 (1995), JETP 97, 331 (2003)) involves expressions of higher order correlation functions describing respectively the singlet hopping and the superconducting pairing. Rigorous derivation of their values is reported based on the finding that specific invariant classes of polynomial Green functions in terms of the Wannier overlap coefficients $ν\sb{ij}$ exist.
The ground-state properties of the Hubbard model with attractive local pairing interactions are investigated in the framework of lattice density-functional theory. A remarkable correlation is revealed between the interaction-energy functional $W[\boldsymbolη]$ corresponding to the Bloch-state occupation-number distribution $η_{\boldsymbol{k}σ}$ and the entropy $S[\boldsymbolη]$ of a system of non-interacting fermions having the same $η_{\boldsymbol{k}σ}$. The relation between $W[\boldsymbolη]$ and $S[\boldsymbolη]$ is shown to be approximately linear for a wide range of ground-state representa…
We show how, upon heating the spin degrees of freedom of the Hubbard model to infinite temperature, the symmetries of the system allow the creation of steady-states with long-range correlations between $η$-pairs. With induce this heating with either dissipation or periodic driving and evolve the system towards a nonequilibrium steady state, a process which melts all spin order in the system. The steady state is identical in both cases and displays distance-invariant off-diagonal $η$-correlations. These correlations were first recognised in the superconducting eigenstates in Yang's seminal pape…
In order to numerically study electron correlation effects in multi-orbital systems, we propose a new type of discrete transformation for the exchange (Hund's coupling) and pair-hopping interactions to be used in the dynamical mean field theory + quantum Monte Carlo method. The transformation, which is real and exact, turns out to suppress the sign problem in a wide parameter region including non-half-filled bands. This enables us to obtain the dominant pairing symmetry in the double-orbital Hubbard model, which shows that the spin-triplet, orbital-antisymmetric pairing that exploits Hund's co…
We examine the validity of the weak coupling spin-susceptibility "glue" approximation (SSGA) in a two-dimensional Hubbard model for cuprates. For comparison, we employ the well-established dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) with a quantum Monte Carlo algorithm as a cluster solver. We compare the leading eigenvalues and corresponding eigenfunctions of the DCA and SSGA pairing matrices. For realistic model parameters, we find that the SSGA fails to capture the leading pairing symmetries seen in the DCA. Furthermore, when the SSGA is improved through the addition of a term with d-wave symmetry…
Exact thermal studies of small (4-site, 5-site and 8-site) Hubbard clusters with local electron repulsion yield intriguing insight into phase separation, charge-spin separation, pseudogaps, condensation, in particular, pairing fluctuations away from half filling (near optimal doping). These exact calculations, carried out in canonical (i.e. for fixed electron number N) and grand canonical (i.e. fixed chemical potential $μ$) ensembles, monitoring variations in temperature T and magnetic field h, show rich phase diagrams in a T-$μ$ space consisting of pairing fluctuations and signatures of conde…
