Recent experiments on strongly coupled cavity quantum electrodynamics present new directions in "matter-light" systems. Following on from our previous work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 135301 (2009)] we investigate Bose-Hubbard models coupled to a cavity light field. We discuss the emergence of photoexcitations or "polaritons" within the Mott phase, and obtain the complete variational phase diagram. Exploiting connections to the super-radiance transition in the Dicke model we discuss the nature of polariton condensation within this novel state. Incorporating the effects of carrier superfluidity, we identify a first-order transition between the superradiant Mott phase and the single component atomic superfluid. The overall predictions of mean field theory are in excellent agreement with exact diagonalization and we provide details of superfluid fractions, density fluctuations, and finite size effects. We highlight connections to recent work on coupled cavity arrays.
In this Brief Report the extended Bose-Hubbard model with local two- and three-body interactions is studied by the exact diagonalization approach. The shapes of the first two insulating lobes are discussed and the values of the critical tunneling for which the insulating phase loses stability for repulsive and attractive three-body interactions are predicted.
Using a similarity Hamiltonian renormalization procedure, we determine an effective spin-1/2 representation of the Bose-Hubbard model at half-integer filling and at a finite on-site interaction energy U. By means of bosonization, we are able to recast the effective Hamiltonian as that of a spin-1/2 XXZ magnetic chain with pertinently renormalized coupling and anisotropy parameters. We use this mapping to provide analytical estimates of the correlation functions of the Bose-Hubbard model. We then compare such results with those based on DMRG numerical simulations of the Bose-Hubbard model for v…
We show that polaritons in an array of interacting micro-cavities with strong atom-photon coupling can form a two-component Bose-Hubbard model. Both polariton species are thereby protected against spontaneous emission as their atomic part is stored in two ground states of the atoms. The parameters of the effective model can be tuned via the driving strength of external lasers. We also describe a method to measure the number statistics in one cavity for each polariton species independently.
Based on the exact results obtained by Bethe ansatz, we demonstrate the existence of stable bound pair (BP) wave packet in Bose Hubbard model with arbitrary on-site interaction U. In large-U regime, it is found that an incoming single-particle (SP) can coherently pass through a BP wave packet and leave a coherent shift in the position of it. This suggests a simple scheme for constructing a BP charge qubit to realize a quantum switch, which is capable of controlling the coherent transport of one and only one photon in a one-dimensional waveguide.
We propose a scheme which can realize an extended two-component Bose-Hubbard model using polaritons confined in an array of optical cavities. In addition to the density-dependent interactions, this model also contains nonlinear coupling terms between the two components of the polariton. Using a mean-field calculation, we obtain the phase diagram which shows how these terms affect the transition between the Mott insulator and the superfluid phase. In addition, we employ both a perturbation approach and an exact diagonalization method to gain more insights into the phase diagram.
In a first order approximation, the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian with on site interaction is obtained from the free Hamiltonian (U=0) and generalized commutation relation for the annihilation-creation operators. Similar generalized commutation relations were used for the first time in high energy physics. The spectrum of the system can be found formally by using the algebraic properties of the generalized operators.
We study the effects of an artificial gauge field on the ground-state phases of the Bose-Hubbard model on a checkerboard superlattice in two dimensions, including the superfluid phase and the Mott and alternating Mott insulators. First, we discuss the single-particle Hofstadter problem, and show that the presence of a checkerboard superlattice gives rise to a magnetic flux-independent energy gap in the excitation spectrum. Then, we consider the many-particle problem, and derive an analytical mean-field expression for the superfluid-Mott and superfluid--alternating-Mott insulator phase transiti…
We compute ground state fidelity of the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model at unit filling factor. To this aim, we apply the DMRG algorithm to systems with open and periodic boundary conditions. We find that fidelity differs significantly in the two cases and study its scaling properties in the quantum critical regime.
We show that one can properly take into account of the interaction effects and construct a set of orthonormal Wannier functions for a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice. These interaction-dependent Wannier functions are used to compute the tunneling rate $J$ and the on-site repulsion $U$ in the Bose-Hubbard model. Both parameters are found to be substantially different from ones calculated with the single-particle Wannier functions. Our numerical results of $U$ are found in good agreement with the measured on-site energy in a recent experiment [Campbell {\it et al.} Science {\bf 31…
We present a strong-coupling expansion of the Bose-Hubbard model which describes both the superfluid and the Mott phases of ultracold bosonic atoms in an optical lattice. By performing two successive Hubbard-Stratonovich transformations of the intersite hopping term, we derive an effective action which provides a suitable starting point to study the strong-coupling limit of the Bose-Hubbard model. This action can be analyzed by taking into account Gaussian fluctuations about the mean-field approximation as in the Bogoliubov theory of the weakly interacting Bose gas. In the Mott phase, we repro…
The one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model in large-$U$ limit has been studied via reducing and mapping the Hamiltonian to a simpler one. The eigenstates and eigenvalues have been obtained exactly in the subspaces with fixed numbers of single- and double-occupancies but without multiple-occupancies, and the thermodynamic properties of the system have been calculated further. These eigenstates and eigenvalues also enable us to develop a new perturbation treatment of the model, with which the ground-state energy has been calculated exactly to first order in $1/U$.
We study the superfluid-insulator transition in Bose-Hubbard models in one-, two-, and three-dimensional cubic lattices by means of a recently proposed variational wave function. In one dimension, the variational results agree with the expected Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless scenario of the interaction-driven Mott transition. In two and three dimensions, we find evidences that, across the transition, most of the spectral weight is concentrated at high energies, suggestive of pre-formed Mott-Hubbard side-bands. This result is compatible with the experimental data by Stoferle et al. [Phys. Rev. …
We perform a comparative study of the finite temperature behavior of ultracold Bose atoms in optical lattices by the slave fermion and the slave boson approaches to the Bose Hubbard model. The phase diagram of the system is presented. Although both approaches are equivalent without approximations, the mean field theory based on the slave fermion technique is quantitatively more appropriate. Conceptually, the slave fermion approach automatically excludes the double occupancy of two identical fermions on the same lattice site. By comparing to known results in limiting cases, we find the slave fe…
The extended Bose-Hubbard model in a quadratic trap potential is studied using a finite-size density-matrix renormalization group method (DMRG). We compute the boson density profiles, the local compressibility and the hopping correlation functions. We observed the phase separation induced by the trap in all the quantities studied and conclude that the local density approximation is valid in the extended Bose-Hubbard model. From the plateaus obtained in the local compressibility it was possible to obtain the phase diagram of the homogeneous system which is in agreement with previous results.
We analyze the momentum distribution function and its artificial-gauge-field dependence for the Mott insulator phases of the Hofstadter-Bose-Hubbard model. By benchmarking the results of the random-phase approximation (RPA) approach against those of the strong-coupling expansion (SCE) for the Landau and symmetric gauges, we find pronounced corrections to the former results in two dimensions.
The Bose-Hubbard model is extended to include nearest and far neighbor interactions and is related to the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE). Both models may be studied in optical lattices with quantum gases. The ground state is calculated for the extended Bose-Hubbard model with strong repulsive interactions (weak hopping). Incompressible Mott insulator states are found at rational filling fractions compatible with the principal and secondary FQHE filling fractions of the lowest Landau levels observed experimentally. It is discussed to which extent these states at fractional filling surviv…
We study the off-equilibrium dynamics of the infinite dimensional Bose Hubbard Model after a quantum quench. The dynamics can be analyzed exactly by mapping it to an effective Newtonian evolution. For integer filling, we find a dynamical transition separating regimes of small and large quantum quenches starting from the superfluid state. This transition is very similar to the one found for the fermionic Hubbard model by mean field approximations.
A bosonic realization of the SU(2) Lie algebra and of its vector representation is constructed, and an effective low-energy description of the Bose-Hubbard model in the form of anisotropic theory of quantum rotors is proposed and discussed. A possibility of a normal zero-temperature bosonic phase with neither crystalline nor superfluid order around the tip of the checkerboard-solid lobe at half-integer fillings is examined.
In this paper, we analyze the quantum phases of multiple component Bose-Hubbard model in optical superlattices, using a mean-field method, the decoupling approximation. We find that the phase diagrams exhibit complected patterns and regions with various Charge Density Wave (CDW) for both one- and two- component cases. We also analyze the effective spin dynamics for the two-component case in strong-coupling region at unit filling, and show the possible existence of a Spin Density Wave (SDW) order.
In the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with on-site and nearest neighbor interactions, a gapped phase characterized by an exotic non-local order parameter emerges, the Haldane insulator. Bose-Hubbard models with cavity-mediated global range interactions display phase diagrams, which are very similar to those with nearest neighbor repulsive interactions, but the Haldane phase remains elusive there. Here we study the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor and cavity-mediated global-range interactions and scrutinize the existence of a Haldane Insulator phase. With the help of…
We develop a strong-coupling perturbation theory for the extended Bose-Hubbard model with on-site and nearest-neighbor boson-boson repulsions on ($d > 1$)-dimensional hypercubic lattices. Analytical expressions for the ground-state phase boundaries between the incompressible (Mott or charge-density-wave insulators) and the compressible (superfluid or supersolid) phases are derived up to third order in the hopping $t$. We also briefly discuss possible implications of our results in the context of ultracold dipolar Bose gases with dipole-dipole interactions loaded into optical lattices.
Phase transitions in systems described by Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model on a lattice with two nonequivalent sublattices are investigated in this work. The case of hard-core bosons is considered and pseudospin formalism is used. Phase diagrams are built in the plain of chemical potential of the bosons-bosonic hopping parameter. It is shown that in the case of anisotropic hopping, the region of the supersolid phase existence is possible for a smaller parameter space.
In their preprint Anders et al. [arXiv:1004.0510] propose a crucial modification of the Bosonic Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (B-DMFT) derived by us [Phys. Rev. B 77, 235106 (2008)]. Here we show that the modification consists of two steps which, in fact, cancel each other. Consequently their self-consistency equations are identical to ours.
We present the effective action and self-consistency equations for the bosonic dynamical mean field (B-DMFT) approximation to the bosonic Hubbard model and show that it provides remarkably accurate phase diagrams and correlation functions. To solve the bosonic dynamical mean field equations we use a continuous-time Monte Carlo method for bosonic impurity models based on a diagrammatic expansion in the hybridization and condensate coupling. This method is readily generalized to bosonic mixtures, spinful bosons, and Bose-Fermi mixtures.
The Hubbard model constitutes one of the most celebrated theoretical frameworks of condensed-matter physics. It describes strongly correlated phases of interacting quantum particles confined in lattice potentials. For bosons, the Hubbard Hamiltonian has been deeply scrutinised for short-range on-site interactions. However, accessing longer-range couplings has remained elusive experimentally. This marks the frontier towards the extended Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian that allows insulating ordered phases at fractional lattice fillings. Here we implement this Hamiltonian by confining semiconductor dip…
We explore the dynamical properties of a one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model, where two bosonic species interact via Feshbach resonance. We focus on the region in the phase diagram which is described by an effective, low-energy ferromagnetic Ising model in both transverse and longitudinal fields. In this regime, we numerically calculate the dynamical structure factor of the Bose-Hubbard model using the time-evolving block decimation method. In the ferromagnetic phase, we observe both the continuum of excitations and the bound states in the presence of a longitudinal field. Near the Ising critic…
A mechanism of Mott transitions in a Bose Hubbard model on a square lattice is studied, using a variational Monte Carlo method. Besides an onsite correlation factor, we introduce a four-body doublon-holon factor into the trial state, which considerably improves the variational energy and can appropriately describe a superfluid-insulator transition. Its essense consists in binding (and unbinding) of a doublon to a holon in a finite short range, identical with the cases of fermions. The features of this transition are qualitatively different from those of Brinkman-Rice-type transitions.
We review the recent theoretical developments towards understanding the Mott phases and quantum phase transition of extended Bose-Hubbard models on lattices in two spatial dimensions . We focuss on the description of these systems using the dual vortex picture and point out the crucial role played by the geometry of underlying lattices in determining the nature of both the Mott phases and the quantum phase transitions. We also briefly compare the results of dual vortex theory with quantum Monte Carlo results.
To analyze the ground-state phase diagram of Bose-Bose mixtures loaded into $d$-dimensional hypercubic optical lattices, we perform a strong-coupling power-series expansion in the kinetic energy term (plus a scaling analysis) for the two-species Bose-Hubbard model with onsite boson-boson interactions. We consider both repulsive and attractive interspecies interaction, and obtain an analytical expression for the phase boundary between the incompressible Mott insulator and the compressible superfluid phase up to third order in the hoppings. In particular, we find a re-entrant quantum phase trans…
There has been a recent resurgence of experimental efforts to quantitatively determine the phase diagram of the Bose Hubbard model by carefully analyzing experiments with ultracold bosonic atoms on an optical lattice. In many realizations of these experiments, the hopping amplitudes are not homogeneous throughout the lattice, but instead, the lattice has an anisotropy where hopping along one direction is not exactly equal to hopping along a perpendicular direction. In this contribution, we examine how an anisotropy in the hopping matrix elements affects the Mott lobes of the Bose Hubbard model…
We perform a matrix product state based density matrix renormalisation group analysis of the phases for the disordered one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model. For particle densities N/L = 1, 1/2 and 2 we show that it is possible to obtain a full phase diagram using only the entanglement properties, which come "for free" when performing an update. We confirm the presence of Mott insulating, superfluid and Bose glass phases when N/L = 1 and 1/2 (without the Mott insulator) as found in previous studies. For the N/L = 2 system we find a double lobed superfluid phase with possible reentrance.
We examine the Bose-Hubbard model in the Penrose lattice based on inhomogeneous mean-field theory. Since averaged coordination number in the Penrose lattice is four, mean-field phase diagram consisting of the Mott insulator (MI) and superfluid (SF) phase is similar to that of the square lattice. However, the spatial distribution of Bose condensate in the SF phase is significantly different from uniform distribution in the square lattice. We find a fractal structure in its distribution near the MI-SF phase boundary. The emergence of the fractal structure is a consequence of cooperative effect b…
