It is a classical result that every subharmonic function, defined and ${\mathcal{L}}^p$-integrable for some $p$, $0<p<+\infty$, on the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ of the complex plane ${\mathbb{C}}$ is for almost all $θ$ of the form $o((1-| z|)^{-1/p})$, uniformly as $z\to e^{iθ}$ in any Stolz domain. Recently Pavlović gave a related integral inequality for absolute values of harmonic functions, also defined on the unit disk in the complex plane. We generalize Pavlović's result to so called quasi-nearly subharmonic functions defined on rather general domains in ${\mathbb {R}}^n$, $n\geq 2$.
Generalizing older works of Domar and Armitage and Gardiner, we give an inequality for quasinearly subharmonic functions. As an application of this inequality, we improve Domar's, Rippon's and our previous results concerning the existence of the largest subharmonic minorant of a given function. Moreover, and as an another application, we give a sufficient condition for a separately quasinearly subharmonic function to be quasinearly subharmonic. Our result contains the previous results of Lelong, of Avanissian, of Arsove, of Armitage and Gardiner, and of ours.
We generalize the well-known mean value inequality of subharmonic functions for a slightly more general function class. We also apply this generalized mean value inequality to weighted boundary behavior and nonintegrability questions of subharmonic and superharmonic functions.
We begin by recalling the definition of nonnegative quasinearly subharmonic functions on locally uniformly homogeneous spaces. Recall that these spaces and this function class are rather general: among others subharmonic, quasisubharmonic and nearly subharmonic functions on domains of Euclidean spaces ${\mathbb{R}}^n$, $n\geq 2$, are included. The following result of Gehring and Hallenbeck is classical: Every subharmonic function, defined and ${\mathcal{L}}^p$-integrable for some $p$, $0<p<+\infty$, on the unit disk ${\mathbb{D}}$ of the complex plane ${\mathbb{C}}$ is for almost all $θ$ of th…
We begin by shortly recalling a generalized mean value inequality for subharmonic functions, and two applications of it: first a weighted boundary behavior result (with some new references and remarks), and then a borderline case result to Suzuki's nonintegrability results for superharmonic and subharmonic functions. The main part of the talk consists, however, of partial improvements to Blanchet's removable singularity results for subharmonic, plurisubharmonic and convex functions.
The mean value inequality is characteristic for upper semicontinuous functions to be subharmonic. Quasinearly subharmonic functions generalize subharmonic functions. We find the necessary and sufficient conditions under which subsets of balls are big enough for the catheterization of nonnegative, quasinearly subharmonic functions by mean value inequalities. Similar result is obtained also for generalized mean value inequalities where, instead of balls, we consider arbitrary bounded sets which have nonvoid interiors and instead of the volume of ball some functions depending on the radius of thi…
In this paper, we prove a Moser-Trudinger type inequality for pluri-subharmonic functions vanishing on the boundary. Our proof uses a descent gradient flow for the complex Monge-Ampere functional.
On a stratified Lie group $G$ equipped with hypoelliptic heat kernel measure, we study the behavior of the dilation semigroup on $L^p$ spaces of log-subharmonic functions. We consider a notion of strong hypercontractivity and a strong logarithmic Sobolev inequality, and show that these properties are equivalent for any group $G$. Moreover, if $G$ satisfies a classical logarithmic Sobolev inequality, then both properties hold. This extends similar results obtained by Graczyk, Kemp and Loeb in the Euclidean setting.
We give a characterization of harmonic and subharmonic functions in terms of their mean values in balls and on spheres. This includes the converse of an inequality of Beardon's for subharmonic functions. We also obtain integral inequalities of Harnack type between these two means in general domains.
Given two probability measures $μ, ν$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$, in subharmonic order, we describe optimal stopping times $τ$ that maximize/minimize the cost functional $\mathbb{E} |B_0 - B_τ|^α$, $α> 0$, where $(B_t)_t$ is Brownian motion with initial law $μ$ and with final distribution --once stopped at $τ$-- equal to $ν$. Under the assumption of radial symmetry on $μ$ and $ν$, we show that in dimension $d \geq 3$ and $α\neq 2$, there exists a unique optimal solution given by a non-randomized stopping time characterized as the hitting time to a suitably symmetric barrier. We also relate this problem…
Our main result is an extension of the classical Cauchy inequality for the case of bounded densities. In particular, this implies subharmonicity of the function $M_n(E)$, where $V_n(x)$ is the critical Riesz potential in $R^n$ ($α=n$) of a density $0\leq ρ\leq 1$ and $M_n(t)$ is the profile function: the solution of $y'(t)=1-y^{n/2}(t)$, $y(0)=0$. We show thath this result is optimal (in the sense that $M_n(E)$ is harmnoic for characteristic functions of a ball) and give thereby an affirmative answer to one question posed by B. Gustafsson and M. Putinar (Ind. Univ. Math. J., 52(2003), 527-568)…
In this paper, we prove a Moser-Trudinger type inequality for pluri-subharmonic functions vanishing on the boundary. Our proof uses a descent gradient flow for the complex Monge-Ampere functional.
By using quasi-Banach techniques as key ingredient we prove Poincaré- and Sobolev- type inequalities for $m$-subharmonic functions with finite $(p,m)$-energy. A consequence of the Sobolev type inequality is a partial confirmation of Błocki's integrability conjecture for $m$-subharmonic functions.
A symmetrization techique, introduced by Cianchi, Fusco, Maggi and Pratelli concerning the Sobolev inequality, is adapted to the Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev inequality (GNS) to obtain a reduction step of the problem of showing its quantitative version. More precisely we prove a stability result for the GNS inequality under the hypothesis that it holds, in turn, in the smaller class of radial symmetric decreasing functions.
This paper is concerned with derivation of the global or local in time Strichartz estimates for radially symmetric solutions of the free wave equation from some Morawetz-type estimates via weighted Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev (HLS) inequalities. In the same way we also derive the weighted end-point Strichartz estimates with gain of derivatives for radially symmetric solutions of the free Schroedinger equation. The proof of the weighted HLS inequality for radially symmetric functions involves an application of the weighted inequality due to Stein and Weiss and the Hardy-Littlewood maximal inequali…
In this paper we deduce a formula for the fractional Laplace operator $(-Δ)^{s}$ on radially symmetric functions useful for some applications. We give a criterion of subharmonicity associated with $(-Δ)^{s}$, and apply it to a problem related to the Hessian inequality of Sobolev type: $$\int_{\mathbb{R}^n}|(-Δ)^{\frac{k}{k+1}} u|^{k+1} dx \le C \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} - u \, F_k[u] \, dx, $$ where $F_k$ is the $k$-Hessian operator on $\mathbb{R}^n$, $1\le k < \frac{n}{2}$, under some restrictions on a $k$-convex function $u$. In particular, we show that the class of $u$ for which the above inequal…
We prove all the maximizers of the sharp Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality are smooth. More generally, we show all the nonnegative critical functions are smooth, radial with respect to some points and strictly decreasing in the radial direction. In particular, this resolves all the cases left open by previous works of Chen, Li and Ou on the corresponding integral systems.
We prove a sharpened version of the Strichartz inequality for radial solutions of the Schrödinger equation in $\mathbb{R}^2\times \mathbb{R}$. We establish an improved upper bound for functions that nearly extremize the inequality, with a negative second term that measures the distance from the initial data to Gaussians.
We establish the Trudinger-Moser inequality on weighted Sobolev spaces in the whole space, and for a class of quasilinear elliptic operators in radial form of the type $\displaystyle Lu:=-r^{-θ}(r^α\vert u'(r)\vert^βu'(r))'$, where $θ, β\geq 0$ and $α>0$, are constants satisfying some existence conditions. It worth emphasizing that these operators generalize the $p$- Laplacian and $k$-Hessian operators in the radial case. Our results involve fractional dimensions, a new weighted Pólya-Szeg{ö} principle, and a boundness value for the optimal constant in a Gagliardo-Nirenberg type inequality.

In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of radial extremal functions to an inequality involving Hardy potential and critical Sobolev exponent. Based on the asymptotic behavior at the origin and the infinity, we shall deduce a strict inequality between two best constants. Finally, as an application of this strict inequality, we consider the existence of nontrivial solution of a quasilinear Brezis-Nirenberg type problem with Hardy potential and critical Sobolev exponent.
We prove that, in general, given a $p$-harmonic map $F:M\to N$ and a convex function $H:N\to\mathbb{R}$, the composition $H\circ F$ is not $p$-subharmonic. By assuming some rotational symmetry on manifolds and functions, we reduce the problem to an ordinary differential inequality. The key of the proof is an asymptotic estimate for the $p$-harmonic map under suitable assumptions on the manifolds.
This paper is devoted to various applications of Hardy-Sobolev type inequalities. We derive a new $L^2$ estimate for the $\bar{\partial}-$equation on ${\mathbb C}^n$ which yields a quantitative generalization of the Hartogs extension theorem to the case when the singularity set is not necessary compact. We show that for any negative subharmonic function $ψ$ on ${\mathbb R}^n$, $n>2$, the BMO norm of $\log |ψ|$ is bounded above by $2\sqrt{n-2}$ and $|ψ|^γ$ satisfies a reverse Hölder inequality for every $0<γ<1$. We also show that every plurisubharmonic function is locally BMO. Several Liouville…
It is well known that the Euclidean Sobolev inequality holds on any Cartan-Hadamard manifold of dimension $ n\ge 3 $, i.e. any complete, simply connected Riemannian manifold with nonpositive sectional curvature. As a byproduct of the Cartan-Hadamard conjecture, a longstanding problem in the mathematical literature settled only very recently in a breakthrough paper by Ghomi and Spruck, we can now assert that the optimal constant is also Euclidean, namely it coincides with the one achieved in the Euclidean space $ \mathbb{R}^n $ by the Aubin-Talenti functions. One may ask whether there exist at …
We extend an inequality for harmonic functions, obtained in previous research by the authors, to the case of solutions of uniformly elliptic equations in divergence form, with merely measurable coefficients. The inequality for harmonic functions turned out to be a crucial ingredient in the study of the stability of the radial symmetry for Alexandrov's Soap Bubble Theorem and Serrin's problem. The proof of our inequality is based on a mean value property for elliptic operators by L. Caffarelli, proved in full detail by I. Blank and Z. Hao.
Let D be a bounded domain in n-dimensional Euclidean space, where n>2, and let 1<p< (2n)/(n-2). We prove a reverse-Holder inequality for functions realizing equality in the Sobolev inequality, which finds a lower bound for their (p-1)-norm in terms of their p-norm. This inequality is sharp, and it is an equality if and only if the domain is a round ball. Our result generalizes a theorem of Payne and Rayner and our proof relies on integral rearrangements and an analysis of the ODE corresponding to the radial case.
In this paper, we study Bessel operators and Bessel Laplace equations studied by Weinstein, Huber, and related the harmonic function theory introduced by Muckenhoupt--Stein. We establish the Moser type inequality for these harmonic functions, which is missing in this setting before. We then apply it to give a direct proof for the equivalence of characterizations of the Hardy spaces associated to Bessel operator via non-tangential maximal function and radial maximal function defined in terms of the Poisson semigroup.
We use a suitable transform related to Sobolev inequality to investigate the sharp constants and optimizers for some Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg-type inequalities which are related to the weighted $p$-Laplace equations. Moreover, we give the classification to the linearized problem related to the radial extremals. As an application, we investigate the gradient type remainder term of related inequality by using spectral estimate combined with a compactness argument which extends the work of Figalli and Zhang (Duke Math. J. 2022) at least for radial case.
In this paper we consider a family of Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg interpolation inequalities (CKN), with two radial power law weights and exponents in a subcritical range. We address the question of symmetry breaking: are the optimal functions radially symmetric, or not ? Our intuition comes from a weighted fast diffusion (WFD) flow: if symmetry holds, then an explicit entropy - entropy production inequality which governs the intermediate asymptotics is indeed equivalent to (CKN), and the self-similar profiles are optimal for (CKN). We establish an explicit symmetry breaking condition by proving…
We consider the minimization of the NLS energy on a metric tree, either rooted or unrooted, subject to a mass constraint. With respect to the same problem on other types of metric graphs, several new features appear, such as the existence of minimizers with positive energy, and the emergence of unexpected threshold phenomena. We also study the problem with a radial symmetry constraint that is in principle different from the free problem due to the failure of the Pólya-Szegő inequality for radial rearrangements. A key role is played by a new Poincaré inequality with remainder.
On the space of weighted radial Sobolev space, the following generalization of Moser-Trudinger type inequality was established by Calanchi and Ruf in dimension 2 : If $β\in [0,1)$ and $w_0(x) = |\log |x||^β$ then $$ \sup_{\int_B |\grad u|^2w_0 \leq 1 , u \in H_{0,rad}^1(w_0,B)} \int_B e^{αu^{\frac{2}{1-β}}} dx < \infty,$$ if and only if $α\leq α_β= 2\left[2π(1-β) \right]^{\frac{1}{1-β}}.$ We prove the existence of an extremal function for the above inequality for the critical case when $α= α_β$ thereby generalizing the result of Carleson-Chang who proved the case when $β=0$.
In this paper, we will consider the fractional Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality \begin{equation*} Λ \left(\int_{\mathbb R^n}\frac{|u(x)|^{p}}{|x|^{β {p}}}\,dx\right)^{\frac{2}{p}}\leq \int_{\mathbb R^n}\int_{\mathbb R^n}\frac{(u(x)-u(y))^2}{|x-y|^{n+2γ}|x|^{α}|y|^{α}}\,dy\,dx \end{equation*} where $γ\in(0,1)$, $n\geq 2$, and $α,β\in\mathbb R$ satisfy \begin{equation*} α\leq β\leq α+γ, \ -2γ<α<\frac{n-2γ}{2}, \end{equation*} and the exponent $p$ is chosen to be \begin{equation*} p=\frac{2n}{n-2γ+2(β-α)}, \end{equation*} such that the inequality is invariant under scaling. We first study the…
For certain nonlinear elliptic PDE problems in two dimensions, the classical isoperimetric inequality produces a sharp inequality that violates a Pohozaev identity except for radial symmetric, decreasing solutions. A generalized version of this technique is used here to prove radial symmetry of curl-free Ginzburg-Landau vortices.
We establish several Poincaré--Sobolev type inequalities for the Lapalce--Beltrami operator $Δ_g$ in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb H^n$ with $n\geq 5$. These inequalities could be seen as the improved second order Poincaré inequality with remainder terms involving with the sharp Rellich inequality or sharp Sobolev inequality in $\mathbb H^n$. The novelty of these inequalities is that it combines both the sharp Poincaré inequality and the sharp Rellich inequality or the sharp Sobolev inequality for $Δ_g$ in $\mathbb H^n$. As a consequence, we obtain the Poincaré--Sobolev inequality for the seco…
In this paper we study various Hardy inequalities in the Heisenberg group $\mathbb H^n$, w.r.t. the Carnot-Carathéodory distance $δ$ from the origin. We firstly show that the optimal constant for the Hardy inequality is strictly smaller than $n^2 = (Q-2)^2/4$, where $Q$ is the homogenous dimension. Then, we prove that, independently of $n$, the Heisenberg group does not support a radial Hardy inequality, i.e., a Hardy inequality where the gradient term is replaced by its projection along $\nabla_{\mathbb H}δ$. This is in stark contrast with the Euclidean case, where the radial Hardy inequality…
A Sobolev type embedding for radially symmetric functions on the unit ball $B$ in $\mathbb R^n$, $n\geq 3$, into the variable exponent Lebesgue space $L_{2^\star + |x|^α} (B)$, $2^\star = 2n/(n-2)$, $α>0$, is known due to J.M. do Ó, B. Ruf, and P. Ubilla, namely, the inequality \[ \sup\Big\{\int_B |u(x)|^{2^\star+|x|^α} dx : u\in H^1_{0,{\rm rad}}(B), \|\nabla u\|_{L^2(B)} =1\Big\} < +\infty \] holds. In this work, we generalize the above inequality for higher order Sobolev spaces of radially symmetric functions on $B$, namely, the embedding \[ H^m_{0,{\rm rad}}(B) \hookrightarrow L_{2_m^\star…
Using a Rellich-Pohozaev argument and Hardy's inequality, we derive an improved bound on the nonlinear eigenvalue for the non existence of radial solutions of a Brezis-Nirenberg problem, with Dirichlet boundary conditions, on a geodesic ball of Hn, for 2<n<4.
The Cartan-Hadamard conjecture states that, on every $n$-dimensional Cartan-Hadamard manifold $ \mathbb{M}^n $, the isoperimetric inequality holds with Euclidean optimal constant, and any set attaining equality is necessarily isometric to a Euclidean ball. This conjecture was settled, with positive answer, for $n \le 4$. It was also shown that its validity in dimension $n$ ensures that every $p$-Sobolev inequality ($ 1 < p < n $) holds on $ \mathbb{M}^n $ with Euclidean optimal constant. In this paper we address the problem of classifying all Cartan-Hadamard manifolds supporting an optimal fun…
