We present new experimental results on the development of turbulent spots in channel flow. The internal structure of a turbulent spot is measured, with Time Resolved Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry. We report the observation of travelling-wave-like structures at the trailing edge of the turbulent spot. Special attention is paid to the large-scale flow surrounding the spot. We show that this large-scale flow is an asymmetric quadrupole centred on the spot. We measure the time evolution of the turbulent fluctuations and the mean flow distortions and compare these with the predictions of …
We experimentally and numerically investigate the temporal aspects of turbulent spots spreading in a plane Couette flow for transitional Reynolds numbers between 300 and 450. Spot growth rate, spot advection rate and large-scale flow intensity are measured as a function of time and Reynolds number. All these quantities show similar dynamics clarifying the role played by large-scale flows in the advection of the turbulent spot. The contributions of each possible growth mechanism: growth induced by large scale advection or growth by destabilization, are discussed for the different stages of the …
This article presents direct numerical simulations of the growth of turbulent spots in the transitional regime of plane Couette flow. A quantitative description of the growth process and of the detail of the quadrupolar flow around the spot is given. Focus is put on formation of spanwise vorticity in the velocity streaks that resembles a secondary shear instability. The main features of the instability (coherence lengths, advection velocity) are studied in the context of the turbulent spot, below and above the threshold Reynolds number of appearance of the oblique turbulent bands of plane Coue…

We present detailed experiments on transient growth of turbulent spots induced by external forcing in plane Couette-Poiseuille flow, which are studied in the framework of linear of transient growth. The experimental investigation is supplemented with full theoretical analysis. We compare quantitatively the experimental and theoretical results, including maximal gain and the time at which it occurs. We also present the limits of validity for the application of the linear theory at high amplitude perturbation and Reynolds number, showing experiments with self-sustained states.
A structure consisting of quasi-laminar and turbulent regions in a stripe pattern, which can be found in a transitional plane channel flow, is called `turbulent stripe'. In the previous works, the emergence of this structure was confirmed only in the case of decreasing Reynolds number from turbulent regime. In the present study, its formation from a turbulent spot has been investigated using a direct numerical simulation in a relatively large-scale computational domain of $L_x \times L_y \times L_z = 731.4δ\times 2δ\times 365.7δ$ at ${\rm Re}_τ= 56$ and $L_x \times L_y \times L_z = 640δ\times …
The proliferation of turbulence in subcritical wall-bounded shear flows involves spatially localised coherent structures. Turbulent spots correspond to finite-time nonlinear responses to pointwise disturbances and are regarded as seeds of turbulence during transition. The rapid spatial decay of the turbulent fluctuations away from a spot is accompanied by large-scale flows with a robust structuration. The far field velocity field of these spots is investigated numerically using spectral methods in large domains in four different flow scenarios (plane Couette, plane Poiseuille, Couette-Poiseuil…
We study the laminar turbulent boundary in plane Poiseuille flow at $Re=1400$ and $2180$ using the technique of edge tracking. For large computational domains the attracting state in the laminar-turbulent boundary is localized in spanwise and streamwise direction and chaotic.
Using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) in a new experimental plane Couette flow, we investigate the dynamics of turbulent patches invading formerly laminar flows. We evidence experimentally for the first time in this geometry the existence of large scale flows. These flows appear as soon as laminar and turbulent domains coexist. Spectral analysis is used to study the dynamical evolution of these large scales as well as that of the small scales associated with turbulence. We show that large-scale flows grow before turbulent spots develop and we point out the crucial role they play in the growth…
The evolution of turbulent spots in a parallel shear flow is studied by means of full three-dimensional numerical simulations. The flow is bounded by free surfaces and driven by a volume force. Three regions in the spanwise spot cross-section can be identified: a turbulent interior, an interface layer with prominent streamwise streaks and vortices and a laminar exterior region with a large scale flow induced by the presence of the spot. The lift-up of streamwise streaks which is caused by non-normal amplification is clearly detected in the region adjacent to the spot interface. The spot can be…
We investigate the growth in the spanwise direction of turbulent spots invading a laminar flow in a plane Couette flow. Direct Numerical Simulation is used to track the nucleation of streaks during the spot growth. Experiment and direct numerical simulation allow us to study the velocity of the spot fronts and of the vortices observed at the spots' edges. All these results show that two mechanisms are involved when turbulent spots grow: a formerly proposed local growth occurring at the spot spanwise tips but also in comparable proportion a global growth induced by large-scale advection identif…

We demonstrate that the space-time statistics of the birth of turbulent spots in boundary layers can be reconstructed qualitatively from the average behavior of macroscopic measures in the transition zone. The conclusion in \cite{vg04} that there exists a connection between the patterns in laminar instability and the birth of turbulent spots is strengthened. We examine why the relationship between instability and transition to turbulence is manifest in some cases and appears to be totally absent in others. Novel cellular automaton type simulations of the transition zone are conducted, and the …
Turbulent-laminar intermittency, typically in the form of bands and spots, is a ubiquitous feature of the route to turbulence in wall-bounded shear flows. Here we study the idealised shear between stress-free boundaries driven by a sinusoidal body force and demonstrate quantitative agreement between turbulence in this flow and that found in the interior of plane Couette flow -- the region excluding the boundary layers. Exploiting the absence of boundary layers, we construct a model flow that uses only four Fourier modes in the shear direction and yet robustly captures the range of spatiotempor…
We present a new experimental set-up that creates a shear flow with zero mean advection velocity achieved by counterbalancing the nonzero streamwise pressure gradient by moving boundaries, which generates plane Couette-Poiseuille flow. We carry out the first experimental results in the transitional regime for this flow. Using flow visualization we characterize the subcritical transition to turbulence in Couette-Poiseuille flow and show the existence of turbulent spots generated by a permanent perturbation. Due to the zero mean advection velocity of the base profile, these turbulent structures …
We find an instability resulting in generation of large-scale vorticity in a fast rotating small-scale turbulence or turbulent convection with inhomogeneous fluid density along the rotational axis in anelastic approximation. The large-scale instability causes excitation of two modes: (i) the mode with dominant vertical vorticity and with the mean velocity being independent of the vertical coordinate; (ii) the mode with dominant horizontal vorticity and with the mean momentum being independent of the vertical coordinate. The mode with the dominant vertical vorticity can be excited in a fast rot…
The concept of edge state is investigated in the asymptotic suction boundary layer in relation with the receptivity process to noisy perturbations and the nucleation of turbulent spots. Edge tracking is first performed numerically, without imposing any discrete symmetry, in a large computational domain allowing for full spatial localisation of the perturbation velocity. The edge state is a three-dimensional localised structure recurrently characterised by a single low-speed streak that experiences erratic bursts and planar shifts. This recurrent streaky structure is then compared with predeces…
We study the turbulence transition of plane Couette flow in large domains where localised perturbations are observed to generate growing turbulent spots. Extending previous studies on the boundary between laminar and turbulent dynamics we determine invariant structures intermediate between laminar and turbulent flow. In wide but short domains we find states that are localised in spanwise direction, and in wide and long domains the states are also localised in downstream direction. These localised states act as critical nuclei for the transition to turbulence in spatially extended domains.
We present an equilibrium solution of plane Couette flow that is exponentially localized in both the spanwise and streamwise directions. The solution is similar in size and structure to previously computed turbulent spots and localized, chaotically wandering edge states of plane Couette flow. A linear analysis of dominant terms in the Navier-Stokes equations shows how the exponential decay rate and the wall-normal overhang profile of the streamwise tails are governed by the Reynolds number and the dominant spanwise wavenumber. Perturbations of the solution along its leading eigenfunctions caus…

We report the observation of superstructures, i.e.\ very large-scale and long living coherent structures in highly turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection up to Rayleigh $Ra=10^9$. We perform direct numerical simulations in horizontally periodic domains with aspect ratios up to $Γ=128$. In the considered $Ra$ number regime the thermal superstructures have a horizontal extend of six to seven times the height of the domain and their size is independent of $Ra$. Many laboratory experiments and numerical simulations have focused on small aspect ratio cells in order to achieve the highest possible $Ra…
Four well-resolved LESs of the turbulent boundary layers around a NACA4412 wing section, with Rec ranging from 100,000 to 1,000,000, were performed at 5 degree angle of attack. By comparing the turbulence statistics with those in ZPG TBLs at approximately matching Re_tau, we find that the effect of the adverse pressure gradient (APG) is more intense at lower Reynolds numbers. This indicates that at low Re the outer region of the TBL becomes more energized through the wall-normal convection associated to the APG. This is also reflected in the fact that the inner-scaled wall-normal velocity is l…
Turbulent-laminar patterns are ubiquitous near transition in wall-bounded shear flows. Despite recent progress in describing their dynamics in analogy to non-equilibrium phase transitions, there is no theory explaining their emergence. Dynamical-system approaches suggest that invariant solutions to the Navier--Stokes equations, such as traveling waves and relative periodic orbits in pipe flow, act as building blocks of the disordered dynamics. While recent studies have shown how transient chaos arises from such solutions, the ensuing dynamics lacks the strong fluctuations in size, shape and sp…
Laminar-turbulent intermittency is intrinsic to the transitional regime of a wide range of fluid flows including pipe, channel, boundary layer and Couette flow. In the latter turbulent spots can grow and form continuous stripes, yet in the stripe-normal direction they remain interspersed by laminar fluid. We carry out direct numerical simulations in a long narrow domain and observe that individual turbulent stripes are transient. In agreement with recent observations in pipe flow we find that turbulence becomes sustained at a distinct critical point once the spatial proliferation outweighs the…
We explain the emergence and robustness of intense jets in highly turbulent planetary atmospheres, like on Jupiter, by a general approach of statistical mechanics of potential vorticity patches. The idea is that potential vorticity mixing leads to the formation of a steady organized coarse grained flow, corresponding to the statistical equilibrium state. Our starting point is the quasi-geostrophic 1-1/2 layer model, and we consider the relevant limit of a small Rossby radius of deformation. Then narrow jets are obtained, scaling like the Rossby radius of deformation. These jets can be either z…
We investigate the prediction of the turbulent flow around a canonical square cylinder at Re= 22000 solving the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations. The limitations of URANS modelling are overcome through the application of a data assimilation technique involving a feedback control term, allowing to drive the URANS predictions towards reference data. Using regularly-spaced temporally-resolved reference data that are extracted from DNS, we assess the abilities of the data assimilation methodology in improving the unsteady URANS predictions. While improving the low-frequen…
We investigated the side-wall effects on turbulent bands in channel flow at transitional Reynolds numbers by direct numerical simulations using the open source spectral-element code Nektar++. The width-to-height aspect ratio of 50:1 is considered for this study. Our study shows that turbulent bands can survive the collision with the side wall above bulk Reynolds number of Re around 1000 but decay below Re around 975, i.e. the critical Reynolds number should be approximately between the two Reynolds numbers. We also discussed about the underlying mechanism for the decay of the band at low Reyno…
The spatio-temporal aspects of the transition to turbulence are considered in the case of a boundary layer flow developing above a flat plate exposed to free-stream turbulence. Combining results on the receptivity to free-stream turbulence with the nonlinear concept of a transition threshold, a physically motivated model suggests a spatial distribution of spot nucleation events. To describe the evolution of turbulent spots a probabilistic cellular automaton is introduced, with all parameters directly fitted from numerical simulations of the boundary layer. The nucleation rates are then combine…
In this work, nonlinear variational optimization is used for obtaining minimal seeds for the formation of turbulent bands in channel flow. Using nonlinear optimization together with energy bisection, we have found that the minimal energy threshold for obtaining spatially-patterned turbulence scales with $Re^{-8.5}$ for $Re>1000$. The minimal seed is constituted by a localized spot-like structure surrounded by a low-amplitude large-scale quadrupolar structure filling the whole domain. This minimal-energy perturbation of the laminar flow has dominant wavenumbers equal to $0.15$ and $4$ in the st…
In RANS simulations for turbulent scalar transport, it is common that using an eddy-viscosity (EV) model to close the Reynolds stress yields reasonable mean flow predictions but large errors in scalar transfer results regardless of scalar flux model inadequacies. This failure mode of EV models is generally related to the fact that the transport of momentum and scalar depends on different Reynolds stress components. The present work addresses two common issues relevant to such failures in turbulent scalar transport around obstacles. The first issue is the general overprediction of scalar transf…
Wind-wave interaction involves wind forcing on wave surface and wave effects on the turbulent wind structures, which essentially influences the wind and wave loading on structures. Existing research on wind-wave interaction modeling ignores the inherent strong turbulences of wind. The present study aims to characterize the turbulent airflow over wave surfaces and wave dynamics under wind driving force. A high-fidelity two-phase model is developed to simulate highly turbulent wind-wave fields. Instead of using uniform wind, inherent wind turbulences are prescribed at the inlet boundary using th…
In shear flows turbulence first occurs in the form of localized structures (puffs/spots) surrounded by laminar fluid. We here investigate such spatially intermittent flows in a pipe experiment showing that turbulent puffs have a well defined interaction distance, which sets the minimum spacing of puffs as well as the maximum observable turbulent fraction. Two methodologies are employed here. Starting from a laminar flow puffs can be created by locally injecting a jet of fluid through the pipe wall. When the perturbation is applied periodically at low frequencies, as expected, a regular sequenc…

Turbulent mixing layers over cavities can couple with acoustic waves and lead to undesired oscillations. To understand the nonlinear aspects of this phenomenon, a turbulent mixing layer over a deep cavity at Reynolds number 150 000 is considered and its response to harmonic forcing is analysed with large-eddy simulations (LES) and linearised Navier-Stokes equations (LNSE). As a model of incoming acoustic perturbations, spatially uniform time-harmonic forcing is applied at the cavity end, with amplitudes in the wide range 0.045-8.9% of the bulk velocity. Compressible LES provide reference nonli…
Reynolds-number effects in the adverse-pressure-gradient (APG) turbulent boundary layer (TBL) developing on the suction side of a NACA4412 wing section are assessed in the present work. To this end, we analyze four cases at Reynolds numbers based on freestream velocity and chord length ranging from Rec = 100, 000 to 1,000,000, all of them with 5 degree angle of attack. The results of four well-resolved large-eddy simulations (LESs) are used to characterize the effect of Reynolds number on APG TBLs subjected to approximately the same pressure-gradient distribution (defined by the Clauser pressu…
We consider arbitrary, possibly turbulent, Boussinesq flow which is smooth below a dissipative scale $l_d$. It is demonstrated that the stability of the flow with respect to growth of fluctuations with scale smaller than $l_d$ leads to a non-trivial constraint. That involves the dimensionless strength $Fl$ of fluctuations of the gradients of the scalar in the direction of gravity and the Rayleigh scale $L$ depending on the Rayleigh number $Ra$, the Nusselt number $Nu$ and $l_d$. The constraint implies that the stratified fluid at rest, which is linearly stable, develops instability in the limi…

Direct numerical simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations is carried out to investigate the interaction of a conical shock wave with a turbulent boundary layer developing over a flat plate at free-stream Mach number $M_\infty = 2.05$ and Reynolds number $Re_θ\approx 630$, based on the upstream boundary layer momentum thickness. The shock is generated by a circular cone with half opening angle $θ_c = 25^\circ$. As found in experiments, the wall pressure exhibits a distinctive N-wave signature, with a sharp peak right past the precursor shock generated at the cone apex, followed by an extended …
There are more than 300,000 heart valves implanted annually worldwide with about 50% of them being mechanical valves. The heart valve replacement is often a common treatment for severe valvular disease. However, valves may dysfunction leading to adverse hemodynamic conditions. The current computational study investigated the flow around a bileaflet mechanical heart valve at different leaflet dysfunction levels of 0%, 50%, and 100%, and documented the relevant flow characteristics such as vortical structures and turbulent shear stresses. Studying the flow characteristics through these valves du…
Processes leading to anomalous fluctuations in turbulent flows, referred to as intermittency, are still challenging. We consider cascade trajectories through scales as realizations of a stochastic Langevin process for which multiplicative noise is an intrinsic feature of the turbulent state. The trajectories are conditioned on their entropy exchange. Such selected trajectories concentrate around an optimal path, called instanton, which is the minimum of an effective action. The action is derived from the Langevin equation, estimated from measured data. In particular instantons with negative en…

High-fidelity large-eddy simulations of the flow around two rectangular obstacles are carried out at a Reynolds number of 10,000 based on the free-stream velocity and the obstacle height. The incoming flow is a developed turbulent boundary layer. Mean-velocity components, turbulence fluctuations, and the terms of the turbulent-kinetic-energy budget are analyzed for three flow regimes: skimming flow, wake interference, and isolated roughness. Three regions are identified where the flow undergoes the most significant changes: the first obstacle's wake, the region in front of the second obstacle,…

We present numerical studies of stretching of Hookean dumbbells in a turbulent Navier-Stokes flow with a linear mean profile, <u_x>=Sy. In addition to the turbulence features beyond the viscous Kolmogorov scale η, the dynamics at the equilibrium extension of the dumbbells significantly below eta is well resolved. The variation of the constant shear rate S causes a change of the turbulent velocity fluctuations on all scales and thus of the intensity of local stretching rate of the advecting flow. The latter is measured by the maximum Lyapunov exponent lambda_1 which is found to increase as λ_1 …
We experimentally demonstrate the phenomenon of electroosmotic dipole flow that occurs around a localized surface charge region under the application of an external electric field in a Hele-Shaw cell. We use localized deposition of polyelectrolytes to create well-controlled surface charge variations, and show that for a disk-shaped spot, the internal pressure distribution that arises, results in uniform flow within the spot and dipole flow around it. We further demonstrate the superposition of surface charge spots to create complex flow patterns, without the use of physical walls.
This paper proposes a new data assimilation method for recovering high fidelity turbulent flow field around airfoil at high Reynolds numbers based on experimental data, which is called Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Inversion (POD-Inversion) data assimilation method. Aiming at the flows including shock wave discontinuities or separated flows at high angle of attack, the proposed method can reconstruct high-fidelity turbulent flow field combining with experimental distributed force coefficients. We firstly perform the POD analysis to the turbulent eddy viscosity fields computed by SA model and…
Direct numerical simulations have proven of inestimable help to our understanding of the transition to turbulence in wall-bounded flows. While the dynamics of the transition from laminar flow to turbulence via localised spots can be investigated with reasonable computing resources in domains of limited extent, the study of the decay of turbulence in conditions approaching those in the laboratory requires consideration of domains so wide as to exclude the recourse to fully resolved simulations. Using Gibson's C++ code ChannelFlow, we scrutinize the effects of a controlled lowering of the numeri…
In the present paper, an aerodynamic investigation of a high-speed train is performed. In the first section of this article, a generic high-speed train against a turbulent flow is simulated, numerically. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations combined with the turbulence model are applied to solve incompressible turbulent flow around a high-speed train. Flow structure, velocity and pressure contours and streamlines at some typical wind directions are the most important results of this simulation. The maximum and minimum values are specified and discussed. Also, the pressure coeff…
This article presents a modelling of the formation of spanwise vorticity in the turbulent streaks of the oblique bands and spots of transitional plane Couette flow. A functional model is designed to mimic the coherent flow in the streaks. The control parameters of the model are extracted from Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) statistical data. A Reynolds stress is proposed to study the effect on the instability of this additional force maintaining the baseflow. Local (quasi-parallel) temporal stability analysis is performed on that model to investigate the linear development of the spanwise v…
The phenomenon of turbulent thermal diffusion in temperature-stratified turbulence causing a non-diffusive turbulent flux of inertial and non-inertial particles in the direction of the turbulent heat flux is found using direct numerical simulations (DNS). In simulations with and without gravity, this phenomenon is found to cause a peak in the particle number density around the minimum of the mean fluid temperature for Stokes numbers less than 1, where the Stokes number is the ratio of particle Stokes time to turbulent Kolmogorov time at the viscous scale. Turbulent thermal diffusion causes the…

At low Reynolds numbers, the wind flow in the wake of a single wind turbine is generally not turbulent. However, turbines in wind farms affect each other's wakes so that a turbulent flow can arise. In the present work, an analogue of this effect for the massless charge carrier flow around obstacles in graphene is outlined. We use a relativistic hydrodynamic simulation to analyze the flow in a sample containing impurities. Depending on the density of impurities in the sample, we indeed find evidence for potentially turbulent flow and discuss experimental consequences.
Turbulent flow consists of structures with a wide range of spatial and temporal scales which are hard to resolve numerically. Classical numerical methods as the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) are able to capture fine details of turbulent structures but come at high computational cost. Applying generative adversarial networks (GAN) for the synthetic modeling of turbulence is a mathematically well-founded approach to overcome this issue. In this work, we investigate the generalization capabilites of GAN-based synthetic turbulence generators when geometrical changes occur in the flow configuration (…

We combine a DEM simulation with a stochastic process to model the movement of spherical particles in a turbulent channel flow. With this model we investigate the mixing properties of two species of particles flowing through the channel. We find a linear increase of the mixing zone with the length of the pipe. Flows at different Reynolds number are studied. Below a critical Reynolds number at the Taylor microscale of around $R_{c} \approx 300$ the mixing rate is strongly dependent on the Reynolds number. Above $R_{c}$ the mixing rate stays nearly constant.
