We demonstrate that the space-time statistics of the birth of turbulent spots in boundary layers can be reconstructed qualitatively from the average behavior of macroscopic measures in the transition zone. The conclusion in \cite{vg04} that there exists a connection between the patterns in laminar instability and the birth of turbulent spots is strengthened. We examine why the relationship between instability and transition to turbulence is manifest in some cases and appears to be totally absent in others. Novel cellular automaton type simulations of the transition zone are conducted, and the pattern of spot birth is obtained from secondary instability analysis. The validity of the hypothesis of concentrated breakdown, according to which most turbulent spots originate at a particular streamwise location, is assessed. The predictions made lend themselves to straightforward experimental verification.
The effects of entropic-instabilities on the laminar-turbulent transition dynamics of a blunted flat plate at Mach~$4$ are numerically investigated through linear and nonlinear approaches. Linear wavepacket analysis reveals amplifying oblique first-modes as well as planar and oblique entropy-layer disturbances. The receptivity of entropic-instabilities is found to be largest for actuation seeded in the entropy-layer; the corresponding linear evolution is characterized by an intensification in the wall-normal plane, coupled with streamwise tilting. The transition process that arises from entrop…
A numerical study of the problem of laminar infinite flow of viscous incompressible fluid around a rotating circular cylinder at Reynolds number $ 50 \le {\rm Re} \le 500 $ and dimensionless rotation rate $ 0 \le α\le 7 $ has been carried out. The parametric map of flow regimes has been constructed, where two zones of steady and two zones of periodic solutions are signed out. The dependencies of the drag and lift coefficients on the rotation rate for $ {\rm Re} = 200 $ are studied in detail. Convergence of the numerical solution to the known asymptotic solution at large $ α$ is confirmed.
Linear global instability of the three-dimensional (3-D), spanwise-homogeneous laminar separation bubble (LSB) induced by shock-wave/boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) in a Mach 7 flow of nitrogen over a $30^{\circ}-55^{\circ}$ double wedge is studied. At these conditions corresponding to a freestream unit Reynolds number, $Re_1=5.2\times 10^{4}$ m$^{-1}$, the flow exhibits rarefaction effects and comparable shock-thicknesses to the size of the boundary-layer at separation. This, in turn, requires the use of the high-fidelity Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method to accurately resolve uns…
The non-monotonic profile of temperature is to be considered in the context of combustion inside tubes or thermonuclear flames, which may accelerates to become detonation waves. This transition is known as deflagration-to-detonation transition. Focusing on this point, we extend the study of adiabatic flames, which assumes zero temperature gradient at the burned-side edge of a flame front, to the case of non-zero temperature gradient by introducing compression zone behind the front. Such a treatment has been performed in the previous work based on the ignition temperature approximation. In that…
This paper presents a flame-height correlation for laminar to transition-to-turbulent regime diffusion flames. Flame-height measurements are obtained by means of numerical and experimental studies in which three high definition cameras were employed to take frontal, lateral and 45° angled images simultaneously. The images were analysed using an image-processing algorithm to determine the flame-height through indirect measurement. To locate an overall chemical-flame-length, numerical simulations were conducted with the unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes technique. The eddy-dissipation mod…
A comprehensive and detailed overview of the flow topology over a cambered NACA 65(1)-412 airfoil at Re = 20,000 is presented for angles of attack ranging from 0° to 10° using high-order direct numerical simulations. It is shown that instabilities bifurcate the flow and cause it to change at a critical angle of attack from laminar separation without reattachment over a laminar separation bubble at the trailing edge to a bubble at the leading edge. The transition of the flow regimes is governed by the Karman vortex shedding of the pressure side boundary layer at the trailing edge, Kelvin-Helmho…
The transition from laminar to turbulent flow has been a notorious riddle in fluid dynamics since the nineteenth century. Hydrodynamic instabilities were regarded as a cause for the onset of turbulence, but their theoretical investigation led to paradoxical results. I focus on studies about the instability of laminar boundary-layer flow along a flat plate. The experimental discovery of boundary-layer oscillations (Tollmien-Schlichting waves) in the USA during World War II vindicated a long-disputed theory developed in Germany in the 1920s and 1930s. However, the instability which causes these …
In this note we advocate the notion of variety as juxtaposed to the notion of complexity. Laminar flows are complex, turbulence is various. When the gradients reach a critical point, laminar flows are subjected to instabilities and transitions, sometime soft, sometime dramatic, and the final result is the variety. Turbulent flows in nature are fascinating, and loosely speaking we could say that a system is complex when differences are suffered, is various when diversities are enjoyed and exploited as opportunities.
There are different ways for fluid flow to become turbulent, but usually many instabilities take place before that. Among these instabilities the transition from laminar flow to vortex shedding carries significant practical importance. Here we study a flow, where at high enough flow rates, vortices are generated by a fixed obstacle (cylinder), which penetrates a flowing, quasi-two dimensional soap film. We present experimental results that demonstrate that the transition from laminar flow to a periodic Kármán vortex street can be hysteretic, i.e. changing the mean flow rate $\bar V$ vortices c…
We consider a shear layer of a kind not previously studied to our knowledge. Contrary to the classical free shear layer, the width of the shear zone does not vary in the streamwise direction but rather exhibits a lateral variation. Based on some simplifying assumptions, an analytic solution has been derived for the new shear layer. These assumptions have been justified by a comparison with numerical solutions of the full Navier-Stokes equations, which accord with the analytical solution to better than 1% in the entire domain. An explicit formula is found for the width of the shear zone as a fu…
Results of numerical simulations obtained by a staggered finite difference scheme together with an efficient immersed boundary method are presented to understand the effects of the shape of three-dimensional obstacles on the transition of a boundary layer from a laminar to a turbulent regime. Fully resolved Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS), highlight that the closer to the obstacle the symmetry is disrupted the smaller is the transitional Reynolds number. It has been also found that the transition can not be related to the critical roughness Reynolds number used in the past. The simulations …
Stellar interiors are the seat of efficient transport of angular momentum all along their evolution. Understanding the dependence of the turbulent transport triggered by the shear instabilities due to the differential rotation in stellar radiation zones is mandatory. Indeed, it constitutes one of the cornerstones of the rotational transport and mixing theory which is implemented in stellar evolution codes to predict the rotational and chemical evolutions of stars. We investigate horizontal shear instabilities in stellar radiation zones by considering the full Coriolis acceleration with both th…
Rotational mixing, the key process in stellar evolution, transports angular momentum and chemical elements in stellar radiative zones. In the past two decades, an emphasis has been placed on the turbulent transport induced by the vertical shear instability. However, instabilities arising from horizontal shear and the strength of the anisotropic turbulent transport that they may trigger remain relatively unexplored. This paper investigates the combined effects of stable stratification, rotation, and thermal diffusion on the horizontal shear instabilities in the context of stellar radiative zone…
Wall-bounded flows experience a transition to turbulence characterized by the coexistence of laminar and turbulent domains in some range of Reynolds number R, the natural control parameter. This transitional regime takes place between an upper threshold Rt above which turbulence is uniform (featureless) and a lower threshold Rg below which any form of turbulence decays, possibly at the end of overlong chaotic transients. The most emblematic cases of flow along flat plates transiting to/from turbulence according to this scenario are reviewed. The coexistence is generally in the form of bands, a…
Recent complex-chemistry direct numerical simulations of lean hydrogen-air flames propagating in forced turbulence in a box were continued by switching-off the turbulence forcing. Results show that a decrease in burning velocity U_T(t), caused by the turbulence decay, is reversed when the turbulence becomes weak and a peak of U_T(t) appears, with the peak magnitudes and associated Karlovitz numbers being similar in two different cases. These results (i) are attributed to activation of laminar flame instabilities, which have been suppressed by intense turbulence, and (ii) are argued to indicate…
The mixing process of multiple jets of liquefied petroleum gas and air in a diffusion flame is numerically analysed. The case study considers a four-port array burner where the fuel is injected by four peripheral nozzles and mixed with the surrounding air. Simulations are conducted with the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes technique, and the turbulence effect is modelled with the realizable k-e model. In addition, the eddy dissipation model is implemented to calculate the effect of the turbulent chemical reaction rate. Results show that the essential mixture mechanism occurs within a flame cone…
We perform idealised numerical simulations of magnetic buoyancy instabilities in a model of the solar tachocline. We introduce a simplified model of magnetic flux pumping in an upper layer (the convection zone), and study the effects of its inclusion on the evolution of buoyancy instabilities in a lower layer (the radiative interior). We study its effects on the instability of both a preconceived magnetic slab and of a shear-generated magnetic layer. In the former, we find that in the regime in which the downward pumping velocity is comparable with the Alfven speed of the magnetic layer, flux …
We study the dynamics and properties of a turbulent flame, formed in the presence of subsonic, high-speed, homogeneous, isotropic Kolmogorov-type turbulence in an unconfined system. Direct numerical simulations are performed with Athena-RFX, a massively parallel, fully compressible, high-order, dimensionally unsplit, reactive-flow code. A simplified reaction-diffusion model represents a stoichiometric H2-air mixture. The system being modeled represents turbulent combustion with the Damkohler number Da = 0.05 and with the turbulent velocity at the energy injection scale 30 times larger than the…
Turbulent transport of angular momentum is a necessary process to explain accretion in astrophysical disks. Although the hydrodynamic stability of disk-like flows has been tested in experiments, results are contradictory and suggest either laminar or turbulent flow. Direct numerical simulations reported here show that currently investigated laboratory flows are hydrodynamically unstable and become turbulent at low Reynolds numbers. The underlying instabilities stem from the axial boundary conditions, affect the flow globally and enhance angular-momentum transport.
An emerging long obstacle placed in a boundary layer developing under a free-surface generates a complex horseshoe vortex (HSV) system, which is composed of a set of vortices exhibiting a rich variety of dynamics. The present experimental study examines such flow structure and characterizes precisely, using PIV measurements, the evolution of the HSV geometrical and dynamical properties over a wide range of dimensionless parameters (Reynolds number $Re_h \in [750, 8300]$, boundary layer development ratio $h/δ\in [1.25, 4.25]$ and obstacle aspect ratio $W/h \in [0.67, 2.33]$). The dynamical stud…
In a highly turbulent medium characterized by a low Damköhler number Da, reactions are commonly considered to occur in distributed zones broadened by small-scale turbulent eddies. In the present communication, an alternative regime of propagation of reaction waves in a highly turbulent medium is introduced and studied theoretically and numerically. More specifically, propagation of an infinitely thin reaction sheet in a turbulent medium is analyzed, with molecular mixing of the reactant and product being allowed in wide layers. In this limiting case, an increase in the consumption velocity by …
Pulsating flows through tubular geometries are laminar provided that velocities are moderate. This in particular is also believed to apply to cardiovascular flows where inertial forces are typically too low to sustain turbulence. On the other hand flow instabilities and fluctuating shear stresses are held responsible for a variety of cardiovascular diseases. Here we report a nonlinear instability mechanism for pulsating pipe flow that gives rise to bursts of turbulence at low flow rates. Geometrical distortions of small, yet finite amplitude are found to excite a state consisting of helical vo…
Phase effect on the modal interaction of flow instabilities is investigated for laminar-to-turbulent transition in a flat-plate boundary layer flow. Primary and secondary instabilities are numerically studied with 2D Tollmien-Schlichting wave and subharmonic 3D oblique waves at various initial phase differences between these two instability modes. Three numerical methods are used for a systematic approach for the entire transition process, i.e., before the onset of transition well into fully turbulent flow. The Floquet analysis predicts the subharmonic resonance where a subharmonic mode locall…
The stratified inclined duct (SID) sustains an exchange flow in a long, gently sloping duct as a model for continuously-forced density-stratified flows such as those found in estuaries. Experiments have shown that the emergence of interfacial waves and their transition to turbulence as the tilt angle is increased appears linked to a threshold in the exchange flow rate given by inviscid two-layer hydraulics. We uncover these hydraulic mechanisms with (i) recent direct numerical simulations (DNS) providing full flow data in the key flow regimes (Zhu & Atoufi et al., arXiv:2301.09773, 2023), (ii)…
The complex flow features resulting from the laminar-turbulent transition (LTT) in a sudden expansion pipe flow, with expansion ratio of 1:2 subjected to an inlet vortex perturbation is investigated by means of direct numerical simulations (DNS). It is shown that the threshold for LTT described by a power law scaling with -3 exponent that links the perturbation intensity to the subcritical transitional Reynolds number. Additionally, a new type of instability is found within a narrow range of flow parameters. This instability originates from the region of intense shear rate which is a result of…
Influences of reaction zone thickening and local extinctions on the burning rate of extremely turbulent hydrogen-enriched methane-air flames are investigated using simultaneous planar laser-induced fluorescence of formaldehyde molecule and hydroxyl radical as well as separate stereoscopic particle image velocimetry techniques. Karlovitz numbers upto 76 are examined. It is shown that, by increasing the turbulence intensity, the preheat and reaction zone thicknesses can increase to values that are, respectively, 6.3 and 4.9 of the corresponding laminar flames. Broadening of these zones for inten…
(Abridged) Direct numerical simulations of the interaction of a premixed flame with driven, subsonic, homogeneous, isotropic, Kolmogorov-type turbulence in an unconfined system are used to study the mechanisms determining the turbulent flame speed, S_T, in the thin reaction zone regime. High intensity turbulence is considered with the r.m.s. velocity 35 times the laminar flame speed, S_L, resulting in the Damkohler number Da = 0.05. Here we show that: (1) The flame brush has a complex internal structure, in which the isosurfaces of higher fuel mass fractions are folded on progressively smaller…
We present simulations of coherent structures in compressible flows near the transition to turbulence using the Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) method. The structures we find are remarkably consistent with experimental observations and DNS simulations of incompressible flows, despite a difference in Mach number of several orders of magnitude. The bifurcation from the laminar flow is bistable and shifts to higher Reynolds numbers when the fluid becomes more compressible. This work underlines the robustness of coherent structures in the transition to turbulence and illustrates the ability of…
Precession of planets or moons affects internal liquid layers by driving flows, instabilities and possibly dynamos. The energy dissipated by these phenomena can influence orbital parameters such as the planet's spin rate. However, there is no systematic study of these flows in the spherical shell geometry relevant for planets, and the lack of scaling law prevents convincing extrapolation to celestial bodies. We have run more than 900 simulations of fluid spherical shells affected by precession, to systematically study basic flows, instabilities, turbulence, and magnetic field generation. We observ…
