We present simulations of coherent structures in compressible flows near the transition to turbulence using the Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) method. The structures we find are remarkably consistent with experimental observations and DNS simulations of incompressible flows, despite a difference in Mach number of several orders of magnitude. The bifurcation from the laminar flow is bistable and shifts to higher Reynolds numbers when the fluid becomes more compressible. This work underlines the robustness of coherent structures in the transition to turbulence and illustrates the ability of particle-based methods to reproduce complex non-linear instabilities.
Multi-fractal scaling in the transition to the dissipative regime for fully-developed compressible turbulence is considered. The multi-fractal power law scaling behavior breaks down for very small length scales thanks to viscous effects. However, the effect of compressibility is found to extend the single-scaling multi-fractal regime further into the dissipative range. In the ultimate compressibility limit, thanks to the shock waves which are the appropriate dissipative structures, the single-scaling regime is found to extend indeed all the way into the full viscous regime. This result appears…
Simulations of single- and multi-species compressible flows with shock waves and discontinuities are conducted using a weighted compact nonlinear scheme (WCNS) with a newly developed sixth order localized dissipative interpolation. In smooth regions, the scheme applies the central nonlinear interpolation with minimum dissipation to well resolve fluctuating flow features while in regions containing discontinuities and high wavenumber features, the scheme suppresses spurious numerical oscillations by hybridizing the central interpolation with the more dissipative upwind-biased nonlinear interpol…
In this paper we consider the problem of obtaining a general port-Hamiltonian formulation of Newtonian fluids. We propose the port-Hamiltonian models to describe the energy flux of rotational three-dimensional isentropic and non-isentropic fluids, whose boundary flows and efforts can be used for control purposes or for power-preserving interconnection with other physical systems. In case of two-dimensional flows, we include the considerations about the operators associated with fluid vorticity, preserving the port-Hamiltonian structure of the models proposed.
Three eigenvalue bounds are derived for the instability of ideal compressible stratified magnetohydrodynamic shear flows in which the base velocity, density, and magnetic field vary in two directions. The first bound can be obtained by combining the Howard semi-circle theorem with the energy principle of the Lagrangian displacement. Remarkably, no special conditions are needed to use this bound, and for some cases, we can establish the stability of the flow. The second and third bounds come out from a generalisation of the Miles-Howard theory and have some similarity to the semi-ellipse theore…
We investigate dissipative anomalies in a turbulent fluid governed by the compressible Navier-Stokes equation. We follow an exact approach pioneered by Onsager, which we explain as a non-perturbative application of the principle of renormalization-group invariance. In the limit of high Reynolds and Péclet numbers, the flow realizations are found to be described as distributional or "coarse-grained" solutions of the compressible Euler equations, with standard conservation laws broken by turbulent anomalies. The anomalous dissipation of kinetic energy is shown to be due not only to local cascade…
Flow behavior of a single-component yield stress fluid is addressed on the hydrodynamic level. A basic ingredient of the model is a coupling between fluctuations of density and velocity gradient via a Herschel-Bulkley-type constitutive model. Focusing on the limit of low shear rates and high densities, the model approximates well---but is not limited to---gently sheared hard sphere colloidal glasses, where solvent effects are negligible. A detailed analysis of the linearized hydrodynamic equations for fluctuations and the resulting cubic dispersion relation reveals the existence of a range of …
Stability criterion for the surface gravity capillary waves in a flowing two-layered fluid system with viscous dissipation is investigated. It is seen that the dissipative instability of negative energy waves is absent,- contrary to what earlier authors have concluded. Their error is identified to arise from an erroneous choice of the dissipation law, in which the wave profile velocity is wrongly equated to the particle velocity. Our corrected dissipation law is also shown to restore Galilean invariance to the stability condition of the system.
In this study we present a compressible test-field method (CTFM) for computing $α$ effect and turbulent magnetic diffusivity tensors, as well as those relevant for mean ponderomotive force and mass source, applied to the full MHD equations. We describe the theoretical background of the method, and compare it to the quasi-kinematic test-field method, and to the previously studied variant working in simplified MHD (SMHD). We present several test cases using velocity and magnetic fields of the Roberts geometry, and also compare with the imposed-field method. We show that, for moderate imposed fie…
Linear stability and the non-modal transient energy growth in compressible plane Couette flow are investigated for two prototype mean flows: (a) the {\it uniform shear} flow with constant viscosity, and (b) the {\it non-uniform shear} flow with {\it stratified} viscosity. Both mean flows are linearly unstable for a range of supersonic Mach numbers ($M$). For a given $M$, the critical Reynolds number ($Re$) is significantly smaller for the uniform shear flow than its non-uniform shear counterpart. An analysis of perturbation energy reveals that the instability is primarily caused by an excess t…
A new exact solution of the Navier-Stokes equation is derived for the compressible flows which are far from equilibrium in the limit of extremely low shear viscosity and relatively large volume viscosity. The closed description of the evolution of statistical moments of velocity is obtained, thereby bypassing the closure problem in the theory of turbulence.
An explicit analitical description of the compressible turbulence, based on the exact solution of the one-dimensional Euler equations in the unbounded case is obtained. The Onsager dissipative anomaly is resolved. The exact universal -8/3 energy spectrum corresponding to the finite time collapse of Euler's solution is stated. That spectrum is relevant to strong acoustic turbulence and observation in the space turbulence.
The structure of homogeneous turbulent shear flow is studied using data generated by Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) and a linear analysis for both compressible and incompressible cases. At large values of the mean shear rate, the Rapid Distortion Theory (RDT) limit is approached. Analytical solutions are found for the inviscid compressible RDT equations at long times. The RDT equations are also solved numerically for both inviscid and viscous cases. The RDT solutions, confirmed by the DNS results, show that the even order transverse derivative moments of the dilatational and solenoidal vel…
As a first step towards the asymptotic description of coherent structures in compressible shear flows, we present a description of nonlinear equilibrium solutions of the Navier--Stokes equations in the compressible asymptotic suction boundary layer (ASBL). The free-stream Mach number is assumed to be $< 0.8$ so that the flow is in the subsonic regime and we assume a perfect gas. We extend the large-Reynolds number free-stream coherent structure theory of \cite{deguchi_hall_2014a} for incompressible ASBL flow to describe a nonlinear interaction in a thin layer situated just below the free-strea…
We performed high resolution numerical simulations of homogenous and isotropic compressible turbulence, with an average 3D Mach number close to 0.3. We study the statistical properties of intermittency for velocity, density and entropy. For the velocity field, which is the primary quantity that can be compared to the isotropic incompressible case, we find no statistical differences in its behavior in the inertial range due either to the slight compressibility or to the different dissipative mechanism. For the density field, we find evidence of ``front-like'' structures, although no shocks are …
We introduce a Darcy-scale model to describe compressible multi-component flow in a fully saturated porous medium. In order to capture cross-diffusive effects between the different species correctly, we make use of the Maxwell--Stefan theory in a thermodynamically consistent way. For inviscid flow the model turns out to be a nonlinear system of hyperbolic balance laws. We show that the dissipative structure of the Maxwell-Stefan operator permits to guarantee the existence of global classical solutions for initial data close to equilibria. Furthermore it is proven by relative entropy techniques…
The present work develops a compressible VOF-LPT coupled solver in OpenFOAM and utilizes it to simulate a LJICF numerically. This methodology helps accurately predict a complex primary breakup in the Eulerian framework and the secondary atomization of spherical droplets using a computationally efficient LPT method. The coupled solver with AMR is rigorously validated for a liquid jet in crossflow at varying operating conditions. We have further carried out a thorough investigation to study the effect of momentum flux ratio and weber number on the various flow features and liquid jet break-up ph…
We consider an isotropic compressible non-dissipative fluid with broken parity subject to free surface boundary conditions in two spatial dimensions. The hydrodynamic equations describing the bulk dynamics of the fluid as well as the free surface boundary conditions depend explicitly on the parity breaking non-dissipative odd viscosity term. We construct a variational principle in the form of an effective action which gives both bulk hydrodynamic equations and free surface boundary conditions. The free surface boundary conditions require an additional boundary term in the action which resemble…
We investigated a nonlinear advection-diffusion-reaction equation for a passive scalar field. The purpose is to understand how the compressibility can affect the front dynamics and the bulk burning rate. We study two classes of flows: periodic shear flow and cellular flow both in the case of fast advection regime, analysing the system at varying the extent of compressibility and the reaction rate. We find that the bulk burning rate in a shear flow increases with compressibility intensity. Furthermore, the faster the reaction the more important the difference with respect to the laminar case. T…
Supersonic turbulent flows of magnetized gas are believed to play an important role in the dynamics of star-forming clouds in galaxies. Understanding statistical properties of such flows is crucial for developing a theory of star formation. In this letter we propose a unified approach for obtaining the velocity scaling in compressible and super--Alfvénic turbulence, valid for arbitrary sonic Mach number, \ms. We demonstrate with numerical simulations that the scaling can be described with the She--Lévêque formalism, where only one parameter, interpreted as the Hausdorff dimension of the most i…
