Linear stability and the non-modal transient energy growth in compressible plane Couette flow are investigated for two prototype mean flows: (a) the {\it uniform shear} flow with constant viscosity, and (b) the {\it non-uniform shear} flow with {\it stratified} viscosity. Both mean flows are linearly unstable for a range of supersonic Mach numbers ($M$). For a given $M$, the critical Reynolds number ($Re$) is significantly smaller for the uniform shear flow than its non-uniform shear counterpart. An analysis of perturbation energy reveals that the instability is primarily caused by an excess transfer of energy from mean-flow to perturbations. It is shown that the energy-transfer from mean-flow occurs close to the moving top-wall for ``mode I'' instability, whereas it occurs in the bulk of the flow domain for ``mode II''. For the non-modal analysis, it is shown that the maximum amplification of perturbation energy, $G_{\max}$, is significantly larger for the uniform shear case compared to its non-uniform counterpart. For $α=0$, the linear stability operator can be partitioned into ${\cal L}\sim \bar{\cal L} + Re^2{\cal L}_p$, and the $Re$-dependent operator ${\cal L}_p$ is shown to have a negligibly small contribution to perturbation energy which is responsible for the validity of the well-known quadratic-scaling law in uniform shear flow: $G(t/{\it Re}) \sim {\it Re}^2$. A reduced inviscid model has been shown to capture all salient features of transient energy growth of full viscous problem. For both modal and non-modal instability, it is shown that the {\it viscosity-stratification} of the underlying mean flow would lead to a delayed transition in compressible Couette flow.
Recent research has shed light on the role of coherent structures in forming layers when stably stratified turbulence is forced with horizontal shear (Lucas, Caulfield & Kerswell, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 832, 2017, pp. 409-437). Here we extend our previous work to investigate the effect of rigid boundaries on the dynamics by studying stably-stratified plane Couette flow with gravity oriented in the spanwise direction. We observe near-wall layering and associated new mean flows in the form of large scale spanwise-flattened streamwise rolls. The layers exhibit the expected buoyancy scaling $l_z\sim…
In the above paper by Bechtel, Cai, Rooney and Wang, Physics of Fluids, 2004, 16, 3955-3974 six different theories of a Newtonian viscous fluid are investigated and compared, namely, the theory of a compressible Newtonian fluid, and five constitutive limits of this theory: the incompressible theory, the limit where density changes only due to changes in temperature, the limit where density changes only with changes in entropy, the limit where pressure is a function only of temperature, and the limit of pressure a function only of entropy. The six theories are compared through their ability to …
The symmetries of flow structures are often prescribed by their mechanical instability and geometry. Here, as an example, we present the homotopy of the rotating 3-fold spiral state that is robust in a spherical Couette flow towards the hybrid system with a thermal stratification effect. It has not yet been confirmed that the rotating wave state smoothly connects to the thermal stratification system. Through continuation, the most dangerous mode at a purely spherical Couette flow of $m=4$ modes of spherical harmonics is replaced by $l=4$ and $m=3$ in a purely thermal convective system. For the…
This paper numerically investigates the shear flow between double concentric spherical boundaries rotating differentially, so-called spherical Couette flow, under unstable thermal stratification, focusing on the boundary of the axisymmetric/non-axisymmetric transition in wide gap cases where the inner radius is comparable to the clearance width. While the transition of SCF has been confirmed experimentally in cases without thermal factor, insufficient knowledge on SCF subject to thermal instability, related to geophysical problems especially in wide gap cases, has been accumulated mainly based…
The `Rayleigh line' $μ=η^2$, where $μ=Ω_o/Ω_i$ and $η=r_i/r_o$ are respectively the rotation and radius ratios between inner (subscript `i') and outer (subscript `o') cylinders, is regarded as marking the limit of centrifugal instability (CI) in unstratified inviscid Taylor-Couette flow, for both axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric modes. Non-axisymmetric stratorotational instability (SRI) is known to set in for anticyclonic rotation ratios beyond that line, i.e. $η^2<μ<1$ for axially stably-stratified Taylor-Couette flow, but the competition between CI and SRI in the range $μ<η^2$ has not yet b…
Nonmodal transient growth studies and estimation of optimal perturbations have been made for the compressible plane Couette flow with three-dimensional disturbances. The maximum amplification of perturbation energy over time, $G_{\max}$, is found to increase with increasing Reynolds number ${\it Re}$, but decreases with increasing Mach number $M$. More specifically, the optimal energy amplification $G_{\rm opt}$ (the supremum of $G_{\max}$ over both the streamwise and spanwise wavenumbers) is maximum in the incompressible limit and decreases monotonically as $M$ increases. The corresponding op…
The effects of isothermal stratification strength on vorticity dynamics for single-mode Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) are examined using two dimensional fully compressible wavelet-based direct numerical simulations. The simulations model low Atwood number ($A=0.04$) RTI development for four different stratification strengths, corresponding to Mach numbers from 0.3 (weakly stratified) to 1.2 (strongly stratified), and for three different perturbation Reynolds numbers, from 5,000 to 20,000. All simulations use adaptive wavelet-based mesh refinement to achieve very fine spatial resolutions at…
We present the stability analysis of a plane Couette flow which is stably stratified in the vertical direction orthogonally to the horizontal shear. Interest in such a flow comes from geophysical and astrophysical applications where background shear and vertical stable stratification commonly coexist. We perform the linear stability analysis of the flow in a domain which is periodic in the stream-wise and vertical directions and confined in the cross-stream direction. The stability diagram is constructed as a function of the Reynolds number Re and the Froude number Fr, which compares the impor…
In this paper, we study the linear stability properties of perturbations around the homogeneous Couette flow for a 2D isentropic compressible fluid in the domain $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbb{R}$. In the inviscid case there is a generic Lyapunov type instability for the density and the irrotational component of the velocity field. More precisely, we prove that their $L^2$ norm grows as $t^{1/2}$ and this confirms previous observations in the physics literature. Instead, the solenoidal component of the velocity field experience inviscid damping, meaning that it decays to zero even in the absence of…
In view of new experimental data the instability against adiabatic nonaxisymmetric perturbations of a Taylor-Couette flow with an axial density stratification is considered in dependence of the Reynolds number Re of rotation and the Brunt-Väisälä number Rn of the stratification. The flows at and beyond the Rayleigh limit become unstable between a lower and an upper Reynolds number (for fixed Rn). The rotation can thus be too slow or too fast for the stratorotational instability. The upper Reynolds number above which the instability decays, has its maximum value for the potential flow (driven b…
We investigate the instability and nonlinear saturation of temperature-stratified Taylor-Couette flows in a finite height cylindrical gap and calculate angular-momentum transport in the nonlinear regime. The model is based on an incompressible fluid in Boussinesq approximation with a positive axial temperature gradient applied. While both ingredients itself, the differential rotation as well as the stratification due to the temperature gradient, are stable, together the system becomes subject of the stratorotational instability and nonaxisymmetric flow pattern evolve. This flow configuration t…
We study the inviscid damping of Couette flow with an exponentially stratified density. The optimal decay rates of the velocity field and the density are obtained for general perturbations with minimal regularity. For Boussinesq approximation model, the decay rates we get are consistent with the previous results in the literature. We also study the decay rates for the full Euler equations of stratified fluids, which were not studied before. For both models, the decay rates depend on the Richardson number in a very similar way. Besides, we also study the dispersive decay due to the exponential …
Shear-induced turbulence could play a significant role in mixing momentum and chemical species in stellar radiation zones, as discussed by Zahn (1974). In this paper we analyze the results of direct numerical simulations of stratified plane Couette flows, in the limit of rapid thermal diffusion, to measure the turbulent diffusivity and turbulent viscosity as a function of the local shear and the local stratification. We find that the stability criterion proposed by Zahn (1974), namely that the product of the gradient Richardson number and the Prandtl number must be smaller than a critical valu…
The direct numerical simulation of compressible fully developed turbulent Couette flow between two parallel plates with equal temperatures moving in opposite directions with some velocity was performed. The algorithm was tested on well known numerical solution for incompressible Poiseuille channel flow and found to provide its well description. The slip effects in studied flow are found to be negligibly small at the values of accommodation coefficients for velocity and temperature of the order of unity. The considerable increase of mean temperature with decreasing the accommodation coefficient…
Recent experimental studies have shown that particle transfer across streamlines can be controlled passively using stratified flows of co-flowing streams at a finite Reynolds number. The stratification modifies the forces acting on particles through the curvature of the undisturbed velocity profile. In this study, we numerically analyze the particle migration in stratified flow of two liquids of different viscosities flowing parallel to each other between two infinite parallel plates. Particle migration in two different flow fields is considered: (i) Couette flow and (ii) Poiseuille flow. A nu…
In the paper we extend the Multiple-Relaxation-Time (MRT) Lattice Boltzmann (LB) model proposed in [Europhys. Lett. \textbf{90}, 54003 (2010)] so that it is suitable also for incompressible flows. To decrease the artificial oscillations, the convection term is discretized by the flux limiter scheme with splitting technique. New model is validated by some well-known benchmark tests, including Riemann problem and Couette flow, and satisfying agreements are obtained between the simulation results and analytical ones. In order to show the merit of LB model over traditional methods, the non-equilib…
In the present work, we study the flow of thixotropic yield stress fluids between two concentric cylinders. In order to take into account the thixotropy, the constitutive relation uses a structural parameter which is driven by a kinetic equation. Here, the Houska's model is considered. Depending on the breakdown rate of the structural parameter, localization or shear-banding are observed. We show that for fragile structures, a shear-banding flow may be observed although for stronger structures, only localisation of the flow is observed such as in Bingham fluids. Physical explanations of the sh…
Three eigenvalue bounds are derived for the instability of ideal compressible stratified magnetohydrodynamic shear flows in which the base velocity, density, and magnetic field vary in two directions. The first bound can be obtained by combining the Howard semi-circle theorem with the energy principle of the Lagrangian displacement. Remarkably, no special conditions are needed to use this bound, and for some cases, we can establish the stability of the flow. The second and third bounds come out from a generalisation of the Miles-Howard theory and have some similarity to the semi-ellipse theore…
The linear theory for rotating compressible convection in a plane layer geometry is presented for the astrophysically-relevant case of low Prandtl number gases. When the rotation rate of the system is large, the flow remains geostrophically balanced for all stratification levels investigated and the classical (i.e., incompressible) asymptotic scaling laws for the critical parameters are recovered. For sufficiently small Prandtl numbers, increasing stratification tends to further destabilise the fluid layer, decrease the critical wavenumber and increase the oscillation frequency of the convecti…
This paper provides a prescription for the turbulent viscosity in rotating shear flows for use e.g. in geophysical and astrophysical contexts. This prescription is the result of the detailed analysis of the experimental data obtained in several studies of the transition to turbulence and turbulent transport in Taylor-Couette flow. We first introduce a new set of control parameters, based on dynamical rather than geometrical considerations, so that the analysis applies more naturally to rotating shear flows in general and not only to Taylor-Couette flow. We then investigate the transition thres…
An immersed-boundary (IB) method is proposed and applied in the gas-kinetic BGK scheme to simulate incompressible/compressible viscous flow with stationary/moving boundary. In present method the ghost-cell technique is adopted to fulfill the boundary condition on the immersed boundary. A novel idea "local boundary determination" is put forward to identify the ghost cells, each of which may have several different ghost-cell constructions corresponding to different boundary segments, thus eliminating the singularity of the ghost cell. Furthermore, the so-called "fresh-cell" problem when implemen…
We calculate the mean electromotive force in plane Couette flows of a nonrotating conducting fluid under the influence of a large-scale magnetic field for driven turbulence. A vertical stratification of the turbulence intensity results in an alpha effect owing to the presence of horizontal shear. Here we discuss the possibility of an experimental determination of the components of the alpha tensor using both quasilinear theory and nonlinear numerical simulations. For magnetic Prandtl numbers of the order of unity, we find that in the high-conductivity limit the alpha effect in the direction of…
The non-equilibrium high-speed compressible flows present wealthy applications in engineering and science. With the deepening of Thermodynamic Non-Equilibrium (TNE), higher-order non-conserved kinetic moments of the distribution function are needed to capture the main feature of the flow state and evolution process. Based on the ellipsoidal statistical Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook model, Discrete Boltzmann Models (DBMs) that consider various orders (from the first up to the sixth order) of TNE effects are developed to study flows in various depths of TNE. Specifically, at first, two types of one-dime…
We study dynamo action in a convective layer of electrically-conducting, compressible fluid, rotating about the vertical axis. At the upper and lower bounding surfaces, perfectly-conducting boundary conditions are adopted for the magnetic field. Two different levels of thermal stratification are considered. If the magnetic diffusivity is sufficiently small, the convection acts as a small-scale dynamo. Using a definition for the magnetic Reynolds number $R_M$ that is based upon the horizontal integral scale and the horizontally-averaged velocity at the mid-layer of the domain, we find that rota…
The linear stability of a rotating, stratified, inviscid horizontal plane Couette flow in a channel is studied in the limit of strong rotation and stratification. An energy argument is used to show that unstable perturbations must have large wavenumbers. This motivates the use of a WKB-approach which, in the first instance, provides an approximation for the dispersion relation of the various waves that can propagate in the flow. These are Kelvin waves, trapped near the channel walls, and inertia-gravity waves with or without turning points. Although, the wave phase speeds are found to be real …
We discuss how searching for finite amplitude disturbances of a given energy which maximise their subsequent energy growth after a certain later time $T$ can be used to probe phase space around a reference state and ultimately to find other nearby solutions. The procedure relies on the fact that of all the initial disturbances on a constant-energy hypersphere, the optimisation procedure will naturally select the one which lies nearest to the stable manifold of a nearby solution in phase space if $T$ is large enough. Then, when in its subsequent evolution, the optimal disturbance transiently ap…
There is considerable interest in hydrodynamic instabilities in dead zones of protoplanetary disks as a mechanism for driving angular momentum transport and as a source of particle-trapping vortices to mix chondrules and incubate planetesimal formation. We present simulations with a pseudo-spectral anelastic code and with the compressible code Athena, showing that stably stratified flows in a shearing, rotating box are violently unstable and produce space-filling, sustained turbulence dominated by large vortices with Rossby numbers of order 0.2-0.3. This Zombie Vortex Instability (ZVI) is obse…
We examine how known unstable equilibria of the Navier-Stokes equations in plane Couette flow adapt to the presence of an imposed stable density difference between the two boundaries for varying values of the Prandtl number $Pr$, the ratio of viscosity to density diffusivity, and fixed moderate Reynolds number, $Re=400$. In the two asymptotic limits $Pr \to 0$ and $Pr \to \infty$, it is found that such solutions exist at arbitrarily high bulk stratification but for different physical reasons. In the $Pr \to 0$ limit, density variations away from a constant stable density gradient become vanish…

Numerous formulations of finite volume schemes for the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations exist, but in the majority of cases they have been developed for structured and stationary meshes. In many applications, more flexible mesh geometries that can dynamically adjust to the problem at hand and move with the flow in a (quasi) Lagrangian fashion would, however, be highly desirable, as this can allow a significant reduction of advection errors and an accurate realization of curved and moving boundary conditions. Here we describe a novel formulation of viscous continuum hydrodynamics that solves t…
Modal instabilities in a flow through a channel at high Reynolds and Mach numbers are studied for three-dimensional perturbations. In addition to the Tollmien-Schlichting modes, there exist higher modes in a channel flow that do not have a counterpart in the incompressible limit. The stability characteristics of these higher modes, obtained through numerical calculations, are compared with boundary layer and Couette flows that have been previously studied. The dominant higher mode instabilities in a channel flow are shown to be viscous in nature, in contrast to compressible boundary layer mode…
