Grebogi, Ott and Yorke (Phys. Rev. A 38(7), 1988) have investigated the effect of finite precision on average period length of chaotic maps. They showed that the average length of periodic orbits ($T$) of a dynamical system scales as a function of computer precision ($ε$) and the correlation dimension ($d$) of the chaotic attractor: $T \sim ε^{-d/2}$. In this work, we are concerned with increasing the average period length which is desirable for chaotic cryptography applications. Our experiments reveal that random and chaotic switching of deterministic chaotic dynamical systems yield higher average length of periodic orbits as compared to simple sequential switching or absence of switching. To illustrate the application of switching, a novel generalization of the Logistic map that exhibits Robust Chaos (absence of attracting periodic orbits) is first introduced. We then propose a pseudo-random number generator based on chaotic switching between Robust Chaos maps which is found to successfully pass stringent statistical tests of randomness.
In this paper, the problem of approximating hidden chaotic attractors of a general class of nonlinear systems is investigated. The Parameter Switching (PS) algorithm is utilized, which switches the control parameter within a given set of values with the initial value problem numerically solved. The PS-generated generated attractor approximates the attractor obtained by averaging the control parameter with the switched values, which represents the hidden chaotic attractor. The hidden chaotic attractors of a generalized Lorenz system and the Rabinovich-Fabrikant system are simulated for illustra…
On the concept of switching nonlinearity (a comment on "Switching control of linear systems for generating chaos" by X. Liu, K-L. Teo, H. Zhang and G. Chen)
In this work, a non intrusive load disaggregation scheme is proposed. By using a kernel based nonlinear regression strategy, the switching dynamic of an electric network, simulated as a set of RLC circuits with chaotic switching, is approximated using a time series of the total power consumption. The results suggest that the employed methodology can be useful in the design of efficient load disaggregation schemes.
In this article, a new synchronization scheme is presented by combining the concept of reduced-order synchronization with multi-switching synchronization schemes. The presented scheme, reduced-order multi-switching hybrid synchronization, is notable addition to the earlier multi-switching schemes providing enhanced security in applications of secure communication. Based on the Lyapunov stability theory, the active control method is used to design the controllers and derive sufficient condition for achieving reduced-order multi-switching hybrid synchronization between a new hyperchaotic system …
Key features of biological activity can often be captured by transitions between a finite number of semi-stable states that correspond to behaviors or decisions. We present here a broad class of dynamical systems that are ideal for modeling such activity. The models we propose are chaotic heteroclinic networks with nontrivial intersections of stable and unstable manifolds. Due to the sensitive dependence on initial conditions, transitions between states are seemingly random. Dwell times, exit distributions, and other transition statistics can be built into the model through geometric design an…
We report the experimental observation of oscillatory antiphase switching between counter-propagating light beams in Kerr ring microresonators, including the emergence of periodic behaviour from a chaotic regime. Self-switching occurs in balanced regimes of operation and is well captured by a simple coupled dynamical system featuring only the self- and cross-phase Kerr nonlinearities. Switching phenomena are due to temporal instabilities of symmetry-broken states combined with attractor merging that restores the broken symmetry on average. Self-switching of counter-propagating light is robust …

As a phenomenon in dynamical systems allowing autonomous switching between stable behaviors, chaotic itinerancy has gained interest in neurorobotics research. In this study, we draw a connection between this phenomenon and the predictive coding theory by showing how a recurrent neural network implementing predictive coding can generate neural trajectories similar to chaotic itinerancy in the presence of input noise. We propose two scenarios generating random and past-independent attractor switching trajectories using our model.
We study quasi periodic and frequency locked states that can occur in a sinusoidally driven linear harmonic oscillator in the special relativistic regime. We show how the shift in natural frequency of the oscillator with increasing relativistic effects leads to frequency locking or quasi periodicity and the chaotic states that arise due to the increasing non linearity. We find the same system can have multi-stable states in the presence of small damping. We also report an enhancement of chaos in the relativistic Henon-Heiles system.
The properties of long, numerically-determined periodic orbits of two low-dimensional chaotic systems, the Lorenz equations and the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky system in a minimal-domain configuration, are examined. The primary question is to establish whether the sensitivity of period averaged quantities with respect to parameter perturbations computed over long orbits can be used as a sufficiently good proxy for the response of the chaotic state to finite-amplitude parameter perturbations. To address this question, an inventory of thousands of orbits at least two orders of magnitude longer than the…
Spatiotemporal chaos in the form of defect-mediated turbulence is known for oscillators coupled by diffusion. Here we explore the same conditions that produce defect turbulence, in an array of oscillators that are coupled through the activator to a regular oscillator. We find that for very small coupling the oscillators behave independent of each other and then there is a transition to complete synchronization. On further increasing the coupling strength, there is period doubling and a transition to chaotic behavior of each driven unit. However the global behavior shows some ordering, and the …
Homoclinic and unstable periodic orbits in chaotic systems play central roles in various semiclassical sum rules. The interferences between terms are governed by the action functions and Maslov indices. In this article, we identify geometric relations between homoclinic and unstable periodic orbits, and derive exact formulae expressing the periodic orbit classical actions in terms of corresponding homoclinic orbit actions plus certain phase space areas. The exact relations provide a basis for approximations of the periodic orbit actions as action differences between homoclinic orbits with well…
Discrete fractional order chaotic systems extends the memory capability to capture the discrete nature of physical systems. In this research, the memristive discrete fractional order chaotic system is introduced. The dynamics of the system was studied using bifurcation diagrams and phase space construction. The system was found chaotic with fractional order $0.465<n<0.562$. The dynamics of the system under different values makes it useful as a switch. Controllers were developed for the tracking control of the two systems to different trajectories. The effectiveness of the designed controllers …
In this article, on the example of the known low-order dynamical models, namely Lorenz, Rossler and Vallis systems, the difficulties of reliable numerical analysis of chaotic dynamical systems are discussed. For the Lorenz system, the problems of existence of hidden chaotic attractors and hidden transient chaotic sets and their numerical investigation are considered. The problems of the numerical characterization of a chaotic attractor by calculating finite-time time Lyapunov exponents and finite-time Lyapunov dimension along one trajectory are demonstrated using the example of computing unsta…
We describe some highlights in the theory of chaos, that started with Poincare (1899). Generic systems have both ordered and chaotic domains. Chaos appears mainly near un- stable periodic orbits. Large chaotic domains are due to resonance overlap. Two recent developments of the theory of chaos, refer (a) to the analytical formulae (Moser series) in the chaotic domains near unstable periodic orbits, and (b) quantum chaos, described by the Bohmian theory of orbits.
For low-dimensional chaotic attractors there is usually a single number of unstable dimensions for all of its periodic orbits and we can say such attractors exhibit "mono-chaos". In high-dimensional chaotic attractors, trajectories are prone to travel through quite different regions of phase space, some far more unstable than others. This heterogeneity makes predictability even more difficult than in low-dimensional homogeneous chaotic attractors. A chaotic attractor is "multi-chaotic" if every point of the attractor is arbitrarily close to periodic points with different numbers of unstable di…
The Bose--Hubbard dimer model is a celebrated fundamental quantum mechanical model that accounts for the dynamics of bosons at two interacting sites. It has been realized experimentally by two coupled, driven and lossy photonic crystal nanocavities, which are optical devices that operate with only a few hundred photons due to their extremely small size. Our work focuses on characterizing the different dynamics that arise in the semiclassical approximation of such driven-dissipative photonic Bose--Hubbard dimers. Mathematically, this system is a four-dimensional autonomous vector field that des…
In the present study, we investigate the dynamics of impulsive differential equations driven by a chaotic system. We rigorously prove that, likewise the drive, the response impulsive system is also chaotic. Our results are based on the presence of sensitivity and infinitely many unstable periodic motions. The theoretical results are supported by simulations.
