We investigate when a weak Hopf algebra H is Frobenius; we show this is not always true, but it is true if the semisimple base algebra A has all its matrix blocks of the same dimension. However, if A is a semisimple algebra not having this property, there is a weak Hopf algebra H with base A which is not Frobenius (and consequently, it is not Frobenius "over" A either). We give, moreover, a categorical counterpart of the result that a Hopf algebra is a Frobenius algebra for a noncoassociative generalization of weak Hopf algebra.
We extend to the co-Frobenius case a result of Drinfeld and Radford related to the fourth power of the antipode of a finite dimensional (co)quasitriangular Hopf algebra.
We study quasi-Hopf algebras and their subobjects over certain commutative rings from the point of view of Frobenius algebras. We introduce a type of Radford formula involving an anti-automorphism and the Nakayama automorphism of a Frobenius algebra, then view several results in quantum algebras from this vantage-point. In addition, separability and strong separability of quasi-Hopf algebras are studied as Frobenius algebras.
We prove that a Hopf algebra with a finite coradical filtration is co-Frobenius, i. e. there is a non-zero integral on it. As a consequence, we show that algebras of functions on quantum groups at roots of one are co-Frobenius. We also characterize co-Frobenius Hopf algebras with coradical a Hopf subalgebra. We study when induction functors (and their adjoints) between categories of Doi-Hopf modules and, more generally, entwined modules are separable, resp. Frobenius. We present a unified approach, leading to new proofs of old results by the authors, as well as to some new ones. Its zeroth term, called the Hopf coradical, is the subalgebra generated by the coradical. Every finite dimensional Hopf algebra is a Frobenius algebra, with Frobenius homomorphism given by an integral. The Nakayama automorphism determined by it yields a decomposition with degrees in a cyclic group. For a family of pointed Hopf algebras, we determine necessary and sufficient conditions for this decomposition to be strongly graded.
We calculate Frobenius-Schur indicator values for some fusion categories obtained from inclusions of finite groups $H\subset G$, where more concretely $G$ is symmetric or alternating, and $H$ is a symmetric, alternating or cyclic group. The zx-calculus and related theories are based on so-called interacting Frobenius algebras, where a pair of dagger-special commutative Frobenius algebras jointly form a pair of Hopf algebras. In this setting we introduce a generalisation of this structure, Hopf-Frobenius algebras, starting from a single Hopf algebra which is not necessarily commutative or cocommutative. We prove that a quasi-bialgebra admits a preantipode if and only if the associated free quasi-Hopf bimodule functor is Frobenius, if and only if the relative (opmonoidal) monad is a Hopf monad. The same results hold in particular for a bialgebra, tightening the connection between Hopf and Frobenius properties.
Mason and Ng have given a generalization to semisimple quasi-Hopf algebras of Linchenko and Montgomery's generalization to semisimple Hopf algebras of the classical Frobenius-Schur theorem for group representations. We give a simplified proof, in particular a somewhat conceptual derivation of the appropriate form of the Frobenius-Schur indicator that indicates if and in which of two possible fashions a given simple module is self-dual.
We study Frobenius 1-morphisms $ı$ in an additive bicategory $\c$ satisfying the depth 2 condition. We show that the 2-endomorphism rings $\c^2(ı\x\ib,ı\x\ib)$ and $\c^2(\ib\xı,\ib\xı)$ can be equipped with dual Hopf algebroid structures. A Hopf algebra is co-Frobenius when it has a nonzero integral. It is proved that the composition length of the indecomposable injective comodules over a co-Frobenius Hopf algebra is bounded. As a consequence, the coradical filtration of a co-Frobenius Hopf algebra is finite; this confirms a conjecture by Sorin Dăscălescu and the first author. The proof is of categorical nature and the same result is obtained for Frobenius tensor categories of subexponential growth. In this paper we show that for an important class of non-trivial Hopf algebras, the Schur indicator is a computable invariant. The Hopf algebras we consider are all abelian extensions; as a special case, they include the Drinfeld double of a group algebra. In addition to finding a general formula for the indicator, we also study when it is always positive. In particular we prove that the indicator is always positive for the Drinfeld double of the symmetric group, generalizing the classical result for the symmetric group itself.
"Co-Frobenius" coalgebras were introduced as dualizations of Frobenius algebras. We discuss algebraic and representation theoretic structures in braided tensor categories C which obey certain finiteness conditions. Much interesting structure of such a category is encoded in a Hopf algebra H in C. In particular, the Hopf algebra H gives rise to representations of the modular group SL(2,Z) on various morphism spaces. We also explain how every symmetric special Frobenius algebra in a semisimple modular category provides additional structure related to these representations.
We study monoidal comonads on a naturally Frobenius map-monoidale $M$ in a monoidal bicategory $\mathcal M$. We regard them as bimonoids in the duoidal hom-category $\mathcal M(M,M)$, and generalize to that setting various conditions distinguishing classical Hopf algebras among bialgebras; in particular, we define a notion of antipode in that context. Classically, the exponent of a group is the least common multiple of the orders of its elements. This notion was generalized by Etingof and Gelaki to the context of Hopf algebras. Kashina, Sommerhauser and Zhu later observed that there is a strong connection between exponents and Frobenius-Schur indicators. We develop the theory of semisimple weak Hopf algebras and obtain analogues of a number of classical results for ordinary semisimple Hopf algebras. We prove a criterion for semisimplicity and analyze the square of the antipode S^2 of a semisimple weak Hopf algebra A. We explain how the Frobenius-Perron dimensions of irreducible A-modules and eigenvalues of S^2 can be computed using the inclusion matrix associated to A. For a certain kind of tensor functor $F: \mathcal{C} \to \mathcal{D}$, we define the relative modular object $χ_F \in \mathcal{D}$ as the "difference" between a left adjoint and a right adjoint of $F$. In this paper, we obtain a canonical central element $ν_H$ for each semi-simple quasi-Hopf algebra $H$ over any field $k$ and prove that $ν_H$ is invariant under gauge transformations. We show that if $k$ is algebraically closed of characteristic zero then for any irreducible representation of $H$ which affords the character $χ$, $χ(ν_H)$ takes only the values 0, 1 or -1, moreover if $H$ is a Hopf algebra or a twisted quantum double of a finite group then $χ(ν_H)$ is the corresponding Frobenius-Schur Indicator. We prove that a depth two Hopf subalgebra K of a semisimple Hopf algebra H is normal (where the ground field $k$ is algebraically closed of characteristic zero). This means on the one hand that a Hopf subalgebra is normal when inducing (then restricting) modules several times as opposed to one time creates no new simple constituents. We give some applications of a Hopf algebra constructed from a group acting on another Hopf algebra A as Hopf automorphisms, namely Molnar's smash coproduct Hopf algebra. We find connections between the exponent and Frobenius-Schur indicators of a smash coproduct and the twisted exponents and twisted Frobenius-Schur indicators of the original Hopf algebra A. We study the category of modules of the smash coproduct.
We study the higher Frobenius-Schur indicators of modules over semisimple Hopf algebras, and relate them to other invariants as the exponent, the order, and the index. We prove various divisibility and integrality results for these invariants. In particular, we prove a version of Cauchy's theorem for semisimple Hopf algebras. Furthermore, we give some examples that illustrate the general theory.
We generalize the Frobenius-Schur theorem to $C^*$-categories. From this category-theoretical point of view, we introduce the notions of real, complex and quaternionic representations of Hopf $C^*$-algebras. Based on these definitions, we give another type of the Hopf-algebraic analogue of the Frobenius-Schur theorem, originally due to Linchenko and Montgomery. Also given are similar results for weak Hopf $C^*$-algebras, table algebras and compact quantum groups.

We define comodule algebras and Galois extensions for actions of bialgebroids. Using just module conditions we characterize the Frobenius extensions that are Galois as depth two and right balanced extensions. As a corollary, we obtain characterizations of certain weak and ordinary Hopf-Galois extensions without reference to action in the hypothesis.
In this paper, we define the higher Frobenius-Schur (FS-)indicators for finite-dimensional modules $V$ of a semisimple quasi-Hopf algebra $H$ via the categorical counterpart developed in \cite{NS05}. We prove that this definition of higher FS-indicators coincides with the higher indicators introduced by Kashina, Sommerhäuser, and Zhu when $H$ is a Hopf algebra. We obtain generalizations of various theorems in Hopf-Galois theory by Kreimer-Takeuchi, Doi-Takeuchi and Cohen-Fischman-Montgomery. In this paper, we study the Green ring and the stable Green ring of a Hopf algebra $H$ by means of bilinear forms. We show that the Green ring of a Hopf algebra of finite representation type is a Frobenius algebra over $\mathbb{Z}$ with a dual basis associated to almost split sequences. On the stable Green ring we define a new bilinear form which is more accurate to determine the bi-Frobenius property of the stable Green ring. We define total Frobenius-Schur indicator for each object in a spherical fusion category $C$ as a certain canonical sum of its higher indicators. The total indicators are invariants of spherical fusion categories. If $C$ is the representation category of a semisimple quasi-Hopf algebra $H$, we prove that the total indicators are non-negative integers which satisfy a certain divisibility condition. The exact sequence of ``coordinate-ring'' Hopf algebras A(SL(2,C)) -> A(SL_q(2)) -> A(F) determined by the Frobenius map Fr, and the same way obtained exact sequence of (quantum) Borel subgroups, are studied when q is a cubic root of unity. An A(SL(2,C))-linear splitting of A(SL_q(2)) making A(SL(2,C)) a direct summand of A(SL_q(2)) is constructed and used to prove that A(SL_q(2)) is a faithfully flat A(F)-Galois extension of A(SL(2,C)). A cocycle and coaction determining the bicrossed-product structure of the upper-triangular (Borel) quantum subgroup of A(SL_q(2)) are computed explicitly.
For any finite-dimensional factorizable ribbon Hopf algebra H and any ribbon automorphism omega of H, we establish the existence of the following structure: an H-bimodule F_omega and a bimodule morphism Z_omega from Lyubashenko's Hopf algebra object K for the bimodule category to F_omega. A classical result in the theory of Hopf algebras concerns the uniqueness and existence of integrals: for an arbitrary Hopf algebra, the integral space has dimension $\leq 1$, and for a finite dimensional Hopf algebra, this dimension is exaclty one. We generalize these results to quasi-Hopf algebras and dual quasi-Hopf algebras. In this paper we consider some properties of semisimple Hopf algebras of dimension pq where p and q are distinct primes. These properties are useful for classification of such Hopf algebras. In this work we study some properties of comldules over (non-cosemisimple) Hopf algebras possessing integrals, which are also called co-Frobenius Hopf algebras. We apply the result obtained to the classification of representations of quantum groups of type $A_{0|0}$.
We review the depth two and Hopf algebroid-Galois theory in math.RA/0108067 and specialize to induced representations of semisimple algebras and character theory of finite groups.
