The logic which describes quantum robots is not orthodox quantum logic, but a deductive calculus which reproduces the quantum tasks (computational processes, and actions) taking into account quantum superposition and quantum entanglement. A way toward the realization of intelligent quantum robots is to adopt a quantum metalanguage to control quantum robots. A physical implementation of a quantum metalanguage might be the use of coherent states in brain signals.
In this study, we review robots behavior especially warrior robots by using evolutionary algorithms. This kind of algorithms is inspired by nature that causes robots behaviors get resemble to collective behavior. Collective behavior of creatures such as bees was shown that do some functions which depended on interaction and cooperation would need to a well-organized system so that all creatures within it carry out their duty, very well. For robots which do not have any intelligence, we can define an algorithm and show the results by a simple simulation.
We present an algorithm to explore an orthogonal polygon using a team of $p$ robots. This algorithm combines ideas from information-theoretic exploration algorithms and computational geometry based exploration algorithms. We show that the exploration time of our algorithm is competitive (as a function of $p$) with respect to the offline optimal exploration algorithm. The algorithm is based on a single-robot polygon exploration algorithm, a tree exploration algorithm for higher level planning and a submodular orienteering algorithm for lower level planning. We discuss how this strategy can be a…

In this paper, a novel knowledge-based genetic algorithm for path planning of a mobile robot in unstructured complex environments is proposed, where five problem-specific operators are developed for efficient robot path planning. The proposed genetic algorithm incorporates the domain knowledge of robot path planning into its specialized operators, some of which also combine a local search technique. A unique and simple representation of the robot path is proposed and a simple but effective path evaluation method is developed, where the collisions can be accurately detected and the quality of a…
This paper investigates different methods to detect obstacles ahead of a robot using a camera in the robot, an aerial camera, and an ultrasound sensor. We also explored various efficient path finding methods for the robot to navigate to the target source. Single and multi-iteration angle-based navigation algorithms were developed. The theta-based path finding algorithms were compared with the Dijkstra Algorithm and their performance were analyzed.
Formalisms inspired by Quantum theory have been used in Cognitive Science for decades. Indeed, Quantum-Like (QL) approaches provide descriptive features that are inherently suitable for perception, cognition, and decision processing. A preliminary study on the feasibility of a QL robot perception model has been carried out for a robot with limited sensing capabilities. In this paper, we generalize such a model for multi-sensory inputs, creating a multidimensional world representation directly based on sensor readings. Given a 3-dimensional case study, we highlight how this model provides a com…
Educational robots allow experimenting with a variety of principles from mechanics, electronics, and informatics. Here we propose ClipBot, a low-cost, do-it-yourself, robot whose skeleton is made of two paper clips. An Arduino nano microcontroller actuates two servo motors that move the paper clips. However, such mechanical configuration confers physical impairments to movement. This creates the need for and allows experimenting with artificial intelligence methods to overcome hardware limitations. We report our experience in the usage of this robot during the study week 'fascinating informati…
Damage recovery is critical for autonomous robots that need to operate for a long time without assistance. Most current methods are complex and costly because they require anticipating each potential damage in order to have a contingency plan ready. As an alternative, we introduce the T-resilience algorithm, a new algorithm that allows robots to quickly and autonomously discover compensatory behaviors in unanticipated situations. This algorithm equips the robot with a self-model and discovers new behaviors by learning to avoid those that perform differently in the self-model and in reality. Ou…
This paper presents a collection of path planning algorithms for real-time movement of multiple robots across a Robotic Mobile Fulfillment System (RMFS). Robots are assigned to move storage units to pickers at working stations instead of requiring pickers to go to the storage area. Path planning algorithms aim to find paths for the robots to fulfill the requests without collisions or deadlocks. The state-of-the-art path planning algorithms, including WHCA*, FAR, BCP, OD&ID and CBS, were adapted to suit path planning in RMFS and integrated within a simulation tool to guide the robots from their…
This paper presents a distributed algorithm applicable to a wide range of practical multi-robot applications. In such multi-robot applications, the user-defined objectives of the mission can be cast as a general optimization problem, without explicit guidelines of the subtasks per different robot. Owing to the unknown environment, unknown robot dynamics, sensor nonlinearities, etc., the analytic form of the optimization cost function is not available a priori. Therefore, standard gradient-descent-like algorithms are not applicable to these problems. To tackle this, we introduce a new algorithm…
In this paper, we explore the ability of a robot arm to learn the underlying operation space defined by the positions (x, y, z) that the arm's end-effector can reach, including disturbances, by deploying and thoroughly evaluating a Spiking Neural Network SNN-based adaptive control algorithm. While traditional control algorithms for robotics have limitations in both adapting to new and dynamic environments, we show that the robot arm can learn the operational space and complete tasks faster over time. We also demonstrate that the adaptive robot control algorithm based on SNNs enables a fast res…
The dendritic cell algorithm is an immune-inspired technique for processing time-dependant data. Here we propose it as a possible solution for a robotic classification problem. The dendritic cell algorithm is implemented on a real robot and an investigation is performed into the effects of varying the migration threshold median for the cell population. The algorithm performs well on a classification task with very little tuning. Ways of extending the implementation to allow it to be used as a classifier within the field of robotic security are suggested.
Finding the physical location of a specific network node is a prototypical task for navigation inside a wireless network. In this paper, we consider in depth the implications of wireless communication as a measurement input of gradient-based taxis algorithms. We discuss how gradients can be measured and determine the errors of this estimation. We then introduce a gradient-based taxis algorithm as an example of a family of gradient-based, convergent algorithms and discuss its convergence in the context of network robotics. We also conduct an exemplary experiment to show how to overcome some of …
Traditional algorithms for robots who need to integrate into a wireless network often focus on one specific task. In this work we want to develop simple, adaptive and reusable algorithms for real world applications for this scenario. Starting with the most basic task for mobile wireless network nodes, finding the position of another node, we introduce an algorithm able to solve this task. We then show how this algorithm can readily be employed to solve a large number of other related tasks like finding the optimal position to bridge two static network nodes. For this we first introduce a meta-…
In this work we present an algorithm for covering continuous connected domains by ant-like robots with very limited capabilities. The robots can mark visited places with pheromone marks and sense the level of the pheromone in their local neighborhood. In case of multiple robots these pheromone marks can be sensed by all robots and provide the only way of (indirect) communication between the robots. The robots are assumed to be memoryless, and to have no global information such as the domain map, their own position (either absolute or relative), total marked area percentage, maximal pheromone l…
The recently introduced Intelligent Trial and Error algorithm (IT\&E) enables robots to creatively adapt to damage in a matter of minutes by combining an off-line evolutionary algorithm and an on-line learning algorithm based on Bayesian Optimization. We extend the IT\&E algorithm to allow for robots to learn to compensate for damages while executing their task(s). This leads to a semi-episodic learning scheme that increases the robot's lifetime autonomy and adaptivity. Preliminary experiments on a toy simulation and a 6-legged robot locomotion task show promising results.
An important capability of autonomous multi-robot systems is to prevent collision among the individual robots. One approach to this problem is to plan conflict-free trajectories and let each of the robots follow its pre-planned trajectory. A widely used practical method for multi-robot trajectory planning is prioritized planning, which has been shown to be effective in practice, but is in general incomplete. Formal analysis of instances that are provably solvable by prioritized planning is still missing. Moreover, prioritized planning is a centralized algorithm, which may be in many situations…

This paper introduces the Differentiable Algorithm Network (DAN), a composable architecture for robot learning systems. A DAN is composed of neural network modules, each encoding a differentiable robot algorithm and an associated model; and it is trained end-to-end from data. DAN combines the strengths of model-driven modular system design and data-driven end-to-end learning. The algorithms and models act as structural assumptions to reduce the data requirements for learning; end-to-end learning allows the modules to adapt to one another and compensate for imperfect models and algorithms, in o…
We enable efficient and effective coordination in unpredictable environments, i.e., in environments whose future evolution is unknown a priori and even adversarial. We are motivated by the future of autonomy that involves multiple robots coordinating in dynamic, unstructured, and adversarial environments to complete complex tasks such as target tracking, environmental mapping, and area monitoring. Such tasks are often modeled as submodular maximization coordination problems. We introduce the first submodular coordination algorithm with bounded tracking regret, i.e., with bounded suboptimality …
In this paper, we study the symmetric rendezvous search problem on the line with n > 2 robots that are unaware of their locations and the initial distances between them. In the symmetric version of this problem, the robots execute the same strategy. The multi-robot symmetric rendezvous algorithm, MSR presented in this paper is an extension our symmetric rendezvous algorithm, SR presented in [23]. We study both the synchronous and asynchronous cases of the problem. The asynchronous version of MSR algorithm is called MASR algorithm. We consider that robots start executing MASR at different times…

The application of quantum computation and information in robotics has caught the attention of researchers off late. The field of robotics has always put its effort on the minimization of the space occupied by the robot, and on making the robot `smarter. `The smartness of a robot is its sensitivity to its surroundings and the user input and its ability to react upon them desirably. Quantum phenomena in robotics make sure that the robots occupy less space and the ability of quantum computation to process the huge amount of information effectively, consequently making the robot smarter. Braitenb…

Intelligent robots provide a new insight into efficiency improvement in industrial and service scenarios to replace human labor. However, these scenarios include dense and dynamic obstacles that make motion planning of robots challenging. Traditional algorithms like A* can plan collision-free trajectories in static environment, but their performance degrades and computational cost increases steeply in dense and dynamic scenarios. Optimal-value reinforcement learning algorithms (RL) can address these problems but suffer slow speed and instability in network convergence. Network of policy gradie…
Singularity in robot controls is an important problem. By identifying an appropriate trajectory for the robots, the singular situations can be avoided. We present a simple and natural extension of the multi-robot motion planning problem where the robots are partitioned into groups (colors), such that in each group the robots are interchangeable. Every robot is no longer required to move to a specific target, but rather to some target placement that is assigned to its group. We call this problem k-color multi-robot motion planning and provide a sampling-based algorithm specifically designed for solving it. At the heart of the algorithm is a novel technique where the k-color problem is reduced to several discrete multi-robot motion planning pro…

We present a new algorithm for deploying passenger robots in marsupial robot systems. A marsupial robot system consists of a carrier robot (e.g., a ground vehicle), which is highly capable and has a long mission duration, and at least one passenger robot (e.g., a short-duration aerial vehicle) transported by the carrier. We optimize the performance of passenger robot deployment by proposing an algorithm that reasons over uncertainty by exploiting information about the prior probability distribution of features of interest in the environment. Our algorithm is formulated as a solution to a seque…
Many robotic applications that are critical for robot performance require immediate feedback, hence execution time is a critical concern. Furthermore, it is common that robots come with a fixed quantity of hardware resources; if an application requires more computational resources than the robot can accommodate, its onboard execution might be extended to a degree that degrades the robot performance. Cloud computing, on the other hand, features on-demand computational resources; by enabling robots to leverage those resources, application execution time can be reduced. The key to enabling robot …
Robots can now learn how to make decisions and control themselves, generalizing learned behaviors to unseen scenarios. In particular, AI powered robots show promise in rough environments like the lunar surface, due to the environmental uncertainties. We address this critical generalization aspect for robot locomotion in rough terrain through a training algorithm we have created called the Path Planning and Motion Control (PPMC) Training Algorithm. This algorithm is coupled with any generic reinforcement learning algorithm to teach robots how to respond to user commands and to travel to designa…
This research proposed an intelligent obstacle avoidance algorithm to navigate an autonomous mobile robot. The presented Intelligent Bug Algorithm (IBA) over performs and reaches the goal in relatively less time as compared to existing Bug algorithms. The improved algorithm offers a goal oriented strategy by following smooth and short trajectory. This has been achieved by continuously considering the goal position during obstacle avoidance. The proposed algorithm is computationally inexpensive and easy to tune. The paper also presents the performance comparison of IBA and reported Bug algorith…
Multi-robot motion planning problems often have many local minima. It is essential to visualize those local minima such that we can better understand, debug and interact with multi-robot systems. Towards this goal, we present the multi-robot motion explorer, an algorithm which extends previous results on multilevel Morse theory by introducing a component-based framework, where we reduce multi-robot configuration spaces by reducing each robots component space using fiber bundles. Our algorithm exploits this component structure to search for and visualize local minima. A user of the algorithm ca…
This paper studies the problem of having mobile robots in a multi-robot system maintain an estimate of the relative position and relative orientation of near-by robots in the environment. This problem is studied in the context of large swarms of simple robots which are capable of measuring only the distance to near-by robots. We present two distributed localization algorithms with different trade-offs between their computational complexity and their coordination requirements. The first algorithm does not require the robots to coordinate their motion. It relies on a non-linear least squares bas…
A flying trapeze act can be a challenging task for a robotics system since some act requires the performer to catch another trapeze or catcher at the end after being airborne. The objective of this paper is to design and validate a motion planning algorithm for a two-link free-flying acrobatic robot that can accurately land on another trapeze after free-flying in the air. First, the proposed algorithm plan the robot trajectory with the non-linear constrained optimization method. Then, a feedback controller is implemented to stabilize the posture. However, since the spatial position of the cent…

Trajectory replanning is a critical problem for multi-robot teams navigating dynamic environments. We present RLSS (Replanning using Linear Spatial Separations): a real-time trajectory replanning algorithm for cooperative multi-robot teams that uses linear spatial separations to enforce safety. Our algorithm handles the dynamic limits of the robots explicitly, is completely distributed, and is robust to environment changes, robot failures, and trajectory tracking errors. It requires no communication between robots and relies instead on local relative measurements only. We demonstrate that the …
Mobile robot navigation in total or partially unknown environments is still an open problem. The path planning algorithms lack completeness and/or performance. Thus, there is the need for complete (i.e., the algorithm determines in finite time either a solution or correctly reports that there is none) and performance (i.e., with low computational complexity) oriented algorithms which need to perform efficiently in real scenarios. In this paper we evaluate the efficiency of two versions of the A star algorithm for mobile robot navigation inside indoor environments with the help of two software …

When a large number of robots try to reach a common area, congestions happen, causing severe delays. To minimise congestion in a robotic swarm system, traffic control algorithms must be employed in a decentralised manner. Based on strategies aimed to maximise the throughput of the common target area, we developed two novel algorithms for robots using artificial potential fields for obstacle avoidance and navigation. One algorithm is inspired by creating a queue to get to the target area (Single Queue Former -- SQF), while the other makes the robots touch the boundary of the circular area by us…

However, the extension is not straightforw…
The coordination of robot swarms - large decentralized teams of robots - generally relies on robust and efficient inter-robot communication. Maintaining communication between robots is particularly challenging in field deployments. Unstructured environments, limited computational resources, low bandwidth, and robot failures all contribute to the complexity of connectivity maintenance. In this paper, we propose a novel lightweight algorithm to navigate a group of robots in complex environments while maintaining connectivity by building a chain of robots. The algorithm is robust to single robot …
