Formalisms based on quantum theory have been used in Cognitive Science for decades due to their descriptive features. A quantum-like (QL) approach provides descriptive features such as state superposition and probabilistic interference behavior. Moreover, quantum systems dynamics have been found isomorphic to cognitive or biological systems dynamics. The objective of this paper is to study the feasibility of a QL perception model for a robot with limited sensing capabilities. We introduce a case study, we highlight its limitations, and we investigate and analyze actual robot behaviors through simulations, while actual implementations based on quantum devices encounter errors for unbalanced situations. In order to investigate QL models for robot behavior, and to study the advantages leveraged by QL approaches for robot knowledge representation and processing, we argue that it is preferable to proceed with simulation-oriented techniques rather than actual realizations on quantum backends.

In this paper we present our work in progress towards a domain-specific language called Robot Perception Specification Language (RPSL). RSPL provide means to specify the expected result (task knowledge) of a Robot Perception Architecture in a declarative and framework-independent manner.
My overarching research goal is to provide robots with perceptional abilities that allow interactions with humans in a human-like manner. To develop these perceptional abilities, I believe that it is useful to study the principles of the human visual system. I use these principles to develop new computer vision algorithms and validate their effectiveness in intelligent robotic systems. I am enthusiastic about this approach as it offers the dual benefit of uncovering principles inherent in the human visual system, as well as applying these principles to its artificial counterpart. To better optimise the global food supply chain, robotic solutions are needed to automate tasks currently completed by humans. Namely, phenotyping, quality analysis and harvesting are all open problems in the field of agricultural robotics. Robotic perception is a key challenge for autonomous solutions to such problems as scene understanding and object detection are vital prerequisites to any grasping tasks that a robot may undertake. This work conducts a brief review of modern robot perception models and discusses their efficacy within the agri-food domain.

Many of today's robot perception systems aim at accomplishing perception tasks that are too simplistic and too hard. They are too simplistic because they do not require the perception systems to provide all the information needed to accomplish manipulation tasks. Typically the perception results do not include information about the part structure of objects, articulation mechanisms and other attributes needed for adapting manipulation behavior. On the other hand, the perception problems stated are also too hard because -- unlike humans -- the perception systems cannot leverage the expectations…

The development of automatic perception systems and techniques for bio-inspired flapping-wing robots is severely hampered by the high technical complexity of these platforms and the installation of onboard sensors and electronics. Besides, flapping-wing robot perception suffers from high vibration levels and abrupt movements during flight, which cause motion blur and strong changes in lighting conditions. This paper presents a perception dataset for bird-scale flapping-wing robots as a tool to help alleviate the aforementioned problems. The presented data include measurements from onboard sens…

Robots are increasingly being deployed in public spaces. However, the general population rarely has the opportunity to nominate what they would prefer or expect a robot to do in these contexts. Since most people have little or no experience interacting with a robot, it is not surprising that robots deployed in the real world may fail to gain acceptance or engage their intended users. To address this issue, we examine users' understanding of robots in public spaces and their expectations of appropriate uses of robots in these spaces. Furthermore, we investigate how these perceptions and expecta…

Unlike robots, humans learn, adapt and perceive their bodies by interacting with the world. Discovering how the brain represents the body and generates actions is of major importance for robotics and artificial intelligence. Here we discuss how neuroscience findings open up opportunities to improve current estimation and control algorithms in robotics. In particular, how active inference, a mathematical formulation of how the brain resists a natural tendency to disorder, provides a unified recipe to potentially solve some of the major challenges in robotics, such as adaptation, robustness, fle…

Mind perception in robots has been an understudied construct in human-robot interaction (HRI) compared to similar concepts such as anthropomorphism and the intentional stance. In a series of three experiments, we identify two factors that could potentially influence mind perception and moral concern in robots: how the robot is introduced (framing), and how the robot acts (social behaviour). In the first two online experiments, we show that both framing and behaviour independently influence participants' mind perception. However, when we combined both variables in the following real-world exper…
Robot perception systems need to perform reliable image segmentation in real-time on noisy, raw perception data. State-of-the-art segmentation approaches use large CNN models and carefully constructed datasets; however, these models focus on accuracy at the cost of real-time inference. Furthermore, the standard semantic segmentation datasets are not large enough for training CNNs without augmentation and are not representative of noisy, uncurated robot perception data. We propose improving the performance of real-time segmentation frameworks on robot perception data by transferring features le…

In order to address the limitations of gestural capabilities in physical robots, researchers in Virtual, Augmented, Mixed Reality Human-Robot Interaction (VAM-HRI) have been using augmented-reality visualizations that increase robot expressivity and improve user perception (e.g., social presence). While a multitude of virtual robot deictic gestures (e.g., pointing to an object) have been implemented to improve interactions within VAM-HRI, such systems are often reported to have tradeoffs between functional and social user perceptions of robots, creating a need for a unified approach that consi…

Scene understanding and object recognition is a difficult to achieve yet crucial skill for robots. Recently, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), have shown success in this task. However, there is still a gap between their performance on image datasets and real-world robotics scenarios. We present a novel paradigm for incrementally improving a robot's visual perception through active human interaction. In this paradigm, the user introduces novel objects to the robot by means of pointing and voice commands. Given this information, the robot visually explores the object and adds images from it t…

The following paper reviews recent developments in the field of optimization of space robotics. The extent of focus of this paper is on the perception (robotic sense of analyzing surroundings) in space robots in the exploration of extra-terrestrial planets. Robots play a crucial role in exploring extra-terrestrial and planetary bodies. Their advantages are far from being counted on finger tips. With the advent of autonomous robots in the field of robotics, the role for space exploration has further hustled up. Optimization of such autonomous robots has turned into a necessity of the hour. Opti…
We have a limited understanding of how we integrate haptic information in real-time from our upper limbs to perform complex bimanual tasks, an ability that humans routinely employ to perform tasks of varying levels of difficulty. In order to understand how information from both limbs is used to create a unified percept, it is important to study both the limbs separately first. Prevalent theories highlighting the role of central nervous system (CNS) in accounting for internal body dynamics seem to suggest that both upper limbs should be equally sensitive to external stimuli. However, there is e…
Multi-robot systems such as swarms of aerial robots are naturally suited to offer additional flexibility, resilience, and robustness in several tasks compared to a single robot by enabling cooperation among the agents. To enhance the autonomous robot decision-making process and situational awareness, multi-robot systems have to coordinate their perception capabilities to collect, share, and fuse environment information among the agents in an efficient and meaningful way such to accurately obtain context-appropriate information or gain resilience to sensor noise or failures. In this paper, we p…
In this paper, we propose an approach to the distributed storage and fusion of data for collective perception in resource-limited robot swarms. We demonstrate our approach in a distributed semantic classification scenario. We consider a team of mobile robots, in which each robot runs a pre-trained classifier of known accuracy to annotate objects in the environment. We provide two main contributions: (i) a decentralized, shared data structure for efficient storage and retrieval of the semantic annotations, specifically designed for low-resource mobile robots; and (ii) a voting-based, decentrali…

A pressing question when designing intelligent autonomous systems is how to integrate the various subsystems concerned with complementary tasks. More specifically, robotic vision must provide task-relevant information about the environment and the objects in it to various planning related modules. In most implementations of the traditional Perception-Cognition-Action paradigm these tasks are treated as quasi-independent modules that function as black boxes for each other. It is our view that perception can benefit tremendously from a tight collaboration with cognition. We present RoboSherlock,…
Mobile robots, performing long-term manipulation activities in human environments, have to perceive a wide variety of objects possessing very different visual characteristics and need to reliably keep track of these throughout the execution of a task. In order to be efficient, robot perception capabilities need to go beyond what is currently perceivable and should be able to answer queries about both current and past scenes. In this paper we investigate a perception system for long-term robot manipulation that keeps track of the changing environment and builds a representation of the perceived…

We define the nervous system of a robot as the processing unit responsible for controlling the robot body, together with the links between the processing unit and the sensorimotor hardware of the robot - i.e., the equivalent of the central nervous system in biological organisms. We present autonomous robots that can merge their nervous systems when they physically connect to each other, creating a "virtual nervous system" (VNS). We show that robots with a VNS have capabilities beyond those found in any existing robotic system or biological organism: they can merge into larger bodies with a sin…
The sense of touch plays a key role in enabling humans to understand and interact with surrounding environments. For robots, tactile sensing is also irreplaceable. While interacting with objects, tactile sensing provides useful information for the robot to understand the object, such as distributed pressure, temperature, vibrations and texture. During robot grasping, vision is often occluded by its end-effectors, whereas tactile sensing can measure areas that are not accessible by vision. In the past decades, a number of tactile sensors have been developed for robots and used for different rob…

We present a system enabling a modular robot to autonomously build structures in order to accomplish high-level tasks. Building structures allows the robot to surmount large obstacles, expanding the set of tasks it can perform. This addresses a common weakness of modular robot systems, which often struggle to traverse large obstacles. This paper presents the hardware, perception, and planning tools that comprise our system. An environment characterization algorithm identifies features in the environment that can be augmented to create a path between two disconnected regions of the environment.…

The theoretical ability of modular robots to reconfigure in response to complex tasks in a priori unknown environments has frequently been cited as an advantage and remains a major motivator for work in the field. We present a modular robot system capable of autonomously completing high-level tasks by reactively reconfiguring to meet the needs of a perceived, a priori unknown environment. The system integrates perception, high-level planning, and modular hardware, and is validated in three hardware demonstrations. Given a high-level task specification, a modular robot autonomously explores an …
The 'intuitive' trust people feel when encountering robots in public spaces is a key determinant of their willingness to cooperate with these robots. We conducted four experiments to study this topic in the context of peacekeeping robots. Participants viewed scenarios, presented as static images or animations, involving a robot or a human guard performing an access-control task. The guards interacted more or less politely with younger and older male and female people. Our results show strong effects of the guard's politeness. Age and sex of the people interacting with the guard had no signific…
Learning visuomotor control policies in robotic systems is a fundamental problem when aiming for long-term behavioral autonomy. Recent supervised-learning-based vision and motion perception systems, however, are often separately built with limited capabilities, while being restricted to few behavioral skills such as passive visual odometry (VO) or mobile robot visual localization. Here we propose an approach to unify those successful robot perception systems for active target-driven navigation tasks via reinforcement learning (RL). Our method temporally incorporates compact motion and visual p…
Enhancing Robot Explanation Capabilities through Vision-Language Models: a Preliminary Study by Interpreting Visual Inputs for Improved Human-Robot Interaction
Collaborative multi-robot perception provides multiple views of an environment, offering varying perspectives to collaboratively understand the environment even when individual robots have poor points of view or when occlusions are caused by obstacles. These multiple observations must be intelligently fused for accurate recognition, and relevant observations need to be selected in order to allow unnecessary robots to continue on to observe other targets. This research problem has not been well studied in the literature yet. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to collaborative multi-robo…

The proposed system is based on multiple sensors including 3D and 2D lidar, two RGB-D cameras and a stereo camera. The two lidars together with an RGB-D camera are used for dynamic object (human) detection and tracking, while the second RGB-D and stereo camera are used for detection of static objects (dirt and ground objects). A learning and reasoning module for spatial-temporal representation of the environment based on the perception pipeline is also introduced. Furthermore, a new dataset …
