General Very Special Relativity (GVSR) is the curved space-time of Very Special Relativity (VSR) proposed by Cohen and Glashow. The geometry of GVSR possesses a line element of Finsler Geometry proposed by Bogoslovsky. We calculate the Einstein field equations and derive a modified FRW cosmology, for an osculating Riemannian space. The Friedman equation of motion leads to an explanation of the cosmological acceleration in terms of an alternative non-Lorentz invariant theory. A first order approach for a primordial spurionic vector field introduced into the metric, gives back an estimation of the energy evolution and inflation
We discuss the recent proposal of implementing Doubly Special Relativity in configuration space by means of Finsler geometry. Although this formalism leads to a consistent description of the dynamics of a particle, it does not seem to give a complete description of the physics. In particular, the Finsler line element is not invariant under the deformed Lorentz transformations of Doubly Special Relativity. We study in detail some simple applications of the formalism.
Modern formulation of Finsler geometry of a manifold M utilizes the equivalence between this geometry and the Riemannian geometry of VTM, the vertical bundle over the tangent bundle of M, treating TM as the base space. We argue that this approach is unsatisfactory when there is an indefinite metric on M because the corresponding Finsler fundamental function would not be differentiable over TM (even without its zero section) and therefore TM cannot serve as the base space. We then make the simple observation that for any differentiable Lorentzian metric on a smooth space-time, the corresponding…
This thesis is based on three different projects, all of them are directly linked to the classical general theory of relativity, but they might have consequences for quantum gravity as well. The first chapter deals with pseudo-Finsler geometric extensions of the classical theory, these being ways of naturally representing high-energy Lorentz symmetry violations. The second chapter deals with the problem of highly damped quasi-normal modes related to different types of black hole spacetimes. Besides the astrophysical meaning of the quasi-normal modes, there are conjectures about the link betwee…
Within the framework of projective geometry, we investigate kinematics and symmetry in $(α,β)$ spacetime-one special types of Finsler spacetime. The projectively flat $(α,β)$ spacetime with constant flag curvature is divided into four types. The symmetry in type A-Riemann spacetime with constant sectional curvature is just the one in de Sitter special relativity. The symmetry in type B-locally Minkowski spacetime is just the one in very special relativity. It is found that type C-Funk spacetime and type D-scaled Berwald's metric spacetime both possess the Lorentz group as its isometric group. …
We analyze the foundations of Finsler gravity theories with metric compatible connections constructed on nonholonomic tangent bundles, or (pseudo) Riemannian manifolds. There are considered "minimal" modifications of Einstein gravity (including theories with violation of local Lorentz invariance) and shown how the general relativity theory and generalizations can be equivalently re--formulated in Finsler like variables. We focus on Finsler branes solutions and perspectives in modern cosmology.
We construct a cosmological toy model based on a Finslerian structure of space-time. In particular, we are interested in a specific Finslerian Lorentz violating theory based on a curved version of Cohen and Glashow's Very Special Relativity. The osculation of a Finslerian manifold to a Riemannian leads to the limit of Relativistic Cosmology, for a specified observer. A modified flat FRW cosmology is produced. The analogue of a zero energy particle unfolds some special properties of the dynamics. The kinematical equations of motion are affected by local anisotropies. Seeds of Lorentz Violations…
The Killing equation for a general Finsler space is set up. It is showed that the Killing equation of $(α,β)$ space can be divided into two parts. One is the same with Killing equation of a Riemannian metric, another equation can be regarded as a constraint. The solutions of Killing equations present explicitly the isometric symmetry of Finsler space. We find that the isometric group of a special case of $(α,β)$ space is the same with the symmetry of Very Special Relativity (VSR). The Killing vectors of Finsler-Funk space are given. Unlike Riemannian constant curvature space, the 4 dimensional…
In the context of Finsler-Randers theory we consider, for a first time, the cosmological scenario of the varying vacuum. In particular, we assume the existence of a cosmological fluid source described by an ideal fluid and the varying vacuum terms. We determine the cosmological history of this model by performing a detailed study on the dynamics of the field equations. We determine the limit of General Relativity, while we find new eras in the cosmological history provided by the geometrodynamical terms provided by the Finsler-Randers theory.
We give an overview on the status and on the perspectives of Finsler gravity, beginning with a discussion of various motivations for considering a Finslerian modification of General Relativity. The subjects covered include Finslerian versions of Maxwell's equations, of the Klein-Gordon equation and of the Dirac equation, and several experimental tests of Finsler gravity.
In this work we study an anisotropic model of general relativity based on the framework of Finsler geometry. The observed anisotropy of the microwave background radiation is incorporated in the Finslerian structure of space-time. We also examine the electromagnetic (e.m.) field equations in our space. As a result a modified wave equation of e.m. waves yields.
The geometry of the Sagnac effect in a stationary region of a spacetime is reviewed with the aim of emphasizing the role of asymmetry of a Finsler metric defined on a spacelike hypersurface associated to a stationary splitting and related to future-pointing null geodesics of the spacetime. We show also that an analogous asymmetry comes into play in the Sagnac effect for timelike geodesics.
In this article we present the cosmological equivalence between the relativistic Finsler-Randers cosmology, with dark energy and modified gravity constructions, at the background level. Starting from a small deviation from the quadraticity of the Riemannian geometry, through which the local structure of General Relativity is modified and the curvature theory is extended, we extract the modified Friedmann equation. The corresponding extended Finsler-Randers cosmology is very interesting, and it can mimic dark-energy and modified gravity, describing a large class of scale-factor evolutions, from…
We discuss the most general Finsler spacetime geometry obeying the cosmological symmetry group $\mathrm{SO}(4)$. On this background geometry we derive the equations of motion for the most general kinetic fluid obeying the same cosmological symmetry. For this purpose we propose a set of coordinates on the tangent bundle of the spacetime manifold which greatly simplifies the cosmological symmetry generators.
This is our reply to "Critical remarks on Finslerian modifications of gravity and cosmology by Zhe Chang and Xin Li", Sergiu I. Vacaru, Phys. Lett. B 690 (2010) 224. It is pointed out that the Finslerian modifications of gravity and cosmology (Zhe Chang and Xin Li, Phys. Lett. B 676 (2009) 173; {\it ibid} 668 (2008) 453) is a suggestion on the generalization of Einstein's gravity and cosmology, but not a proof for theorems in geometry. False or true of the theory should be tested by experiments or observations. We show that the arguments of Sergiu I. Vacaru were based a wrong logic. A personal…
We study the geometric and physical foundations of Finsler gravity theories with metric compatible connections defined on tangent bundles, or (pseudo) Riemannian manifolds). There are analyzed alternatives to Einstein gravity (including theories with broken local Lorentz invariance) and shown how general relativity and modifications can be equivalently re-formulated in Finsler like variables. We focus on prospects in modern cosmology and Finsler acceleration of Universe. All known formalisms are outlined - anholonomic frames with associated nonlinear connection structure, the geometry of the L…
We investigate the bounce realization in the framework of generalized modified gravities arising from Finsler and Finsler-like geometries. In particular, the richer intrinsic geometrical structure is reflected in the appearance of extra degrees of freedom in the Friedmann equations that can drive the bounce. We examine various Finsler and Finsler-like constructions. In the cases of general very special relativity as well as of Finsler-like gravity on the tangent bundle we show that a bounce cannot be easily obtained. However, in the Finsler-Randers space the induced scalar anisotropy can fulfi…
In this work, we obtain the Raychaudhuri equations for various types of Finsler spaces as the Finsler-Randers (FR) space-time and in a more general geometrical structure of the space-time manifold which contains two fibres that are two scalars which represent inflaton fields $ϕ^{(1)}, ϕ^{(2)}.$In addition, the energy-conditions are studied in a FR cosmology and are correlated with FRW model. Finally an application of Raychaudhuri equation for the model $M \times \{ ϕ^{(1)} \} \times \{ ϕ^{(2)} \}$ with M a FRW space is given.
Finslerian extension of the theory of relativity implies that space-time can be not only in an amorphous state which is described by Riemann geometry but also in ordered, i.e. crystalline states which are described by Finsler geometry. Transitions between various metric states of space-time have the meaning of phase transitions in its geometric structure. These transitions together with the evolution of each of the possible metric states make up the general picture of space-time manifold dynamics. It is shown that there are only two types of curved Finslerian spaces endowed with local relativi…
In recent years, Planck-scale modifications to particles' dispersion relation have been deeply studied for the possibility to formulate some phenomenology of Planckian effects in astrophysical and cosmological frameworks. There are some indications [arXiv:gr-qc/0611024] that Finsler geometry can provide some generalization of Riemannian geometry which may allow to account for non-trivial (Planckian) structure of relativistic particles' configuration space. We investigate the possibility to formalize Planck-scale deformations to relativistic models in curved spacetime, within the framework of F…
Special coordinate systems are constructed in a neighborhood of a point or of a curve. Taylor expansions can then be easily inferred for the metric, the connection, or the Finsler Lagrangian in terms of curvature invariants. These coordinates circumvent the difficulties of the normal and Fermi coordinates in Finsler geometry, which in general are not sufficiently differentiable. They are obtained applying the usual constructions to the pullback of a horizontally torsionless connection. The results so obtained are easily specialized to the Berwald or Chern-Rund connections and have application …
We investigate spacetimes whose light cones could be anisotropic. We prove the equivalence of the structures: (a) Lorentz-Finsler manifold for which the mean Cartan torsion vanishes, (b) Lorentz-Finsler manifold for which the indicatrix (observer space) at each point is a convex hyperbolic affine sphere centered on the zero section, and (c) pair given by a spacetime volume and a sharp convex cone distribution. The equivalence suggests to describe {\em (affine sphere) spacetimes} with this structure, so that no algebraic-metrical concept enters the definition. As a result, this work shows how t…
We investigate here all the possible invariant metric functions under the action of various kinds of semi-direct product Poincaré subgroups and their deformed partners. The investigation exhausts the possible theoretical frameworks for the spacetime realization of Cohen-Glashow's very special relativity and the deformation very special relativity approach by Gibbons-Gomis-Pope. Within Finsler-Minkowski type of spacetime, we find that the spacetime emerge a Finsler type of geometry in most cases both for undermed Poincaré subgroup and for deformed one. We give an explanation that the rotation o…
Finsler geometry has been recently re-discovered as an interesting possibility to describe spacetime geometry beyond Riemannian geometry. The most evident effect of this class of models is the prediction of modified dispersion relations for particles moving in such backgrounds. In this paper, we are going to consider the effects of modified dispersion relations on a gauge field theory with spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) associated to a Higgs field. The percolation of higher dimensional, Lorentz violating operators to lower dimensional ones is discussed. We also discuss the issue of SSB in…
We generalize the kinetic theory of fluids, in which the description of fluids is based on the geodesic motion of particles, to spacetimes modeled by Finsler geometry. Our results show that Finsler spacetimes are a suitable background for fluid dynamics and that the equation of motion for a collisionless fluid is given by the Liouville equation, as it is also the case for a metric background geometry. We finally apply this model to collisionless dust and a general fluid with cosmological symmetry and derive the corresponding equations of motion. It turns out that the equation of motion for a d…
ISIM(2) symmetry group of Cohen and Glashow's very special relativity is unstable with respect to small deformations of its underlying algebraic structure and according to Segal's principle cannot be a true symmetry of nature. However, like special relativity, which is a very good description of nature thanks to the smallness of the cosmological constant, which characterizes the deformation of the Poincare group, the very special relativity can also be a very good approximation thanks to the smallness of the dimensionless parameter characterizing the deformation of ISIM(2).
I do not agree with the authors of papers arXiv:0806.2184 and arXiv:0901.1023v1 (published in Phys. Lett., respectively, B668 (2008) 453 and B676 (2009) 173). They consider that \textit{"In Finsler manifold, there exists a unique linear connection - the Chern connection ... It is torsion freeness and metric compatibility ... "}. There are well known results (for example, presented in monographs by H. Rund and R. Miron and M. Anastasiei) that in Finsler geometry there exist an infinite number of linear connections defined by the same metric structure and that the Chern and Berwald connections \…
We apply the method of moving anholonomic frames, with associated nonlinear connections, in (pseudo) Riemannian spaces and examine the conditions when various types of locally anisotropic (la) structures (Lagrange, Finsler like and more general ones) could be modeled in general relativity. New classes of solutions of the Einstein equations with generic local anisotropy are constructed. We formulate the theory of nearly autoparallel (na) maps and introduce the tensorial na-integration as the inverse operation to both covariant derivation and deformation of connections by na-maps. The problem of…
We ask whether Cohen and Glashow's Very Special Relativity model for Lorentz violation might be modified, perhaps by quantum corrections, possibly producing a curved spacetime with a cosmological constant. We show that its symmetry group ISIM(2) does admit a 2-parameter family of continuous deformations, but none of these give rise to non-commutative translations analogous to those of the de Sitter deformation of the Poincaré group: spacetime remains flat. Only a 1-parameter family DISIM_b(2) of deformations of SIM(2) is physically acceptable. Since this could arise through quantum corrections…
The similarity between Finsler and Riemann geometry is an intriguing starting point to extend general relativity. The lack of quadratic restriction over the line element (color) naturally generalize the Riemannian case and breaks the local symmetries of general relativity. In addition, the Finsler manifold is enriched with new geometric entities and all the classical identities are suitably extended. We investigate the covariant kinematics of a medium formed by a time-like congruence. After a brief view in the general case we impose particular geometric restrictions to get some analytic insigh…
Physical foundations for relativistic spacetimes are revisited, in order to check at what extent Finsler spacetimes lie in their framework. Arguments based on inertial observers (as in the foundations of Special Relativity and Classical Mechanics) are shown to correspond with a double linear approximation in the measurement of space and time. While General Relativity appears by dropping the first linearization, Finsler spacetimes appear by dropping the second one. The classical Ehlers-Pirani-Schild approach is carefully discussed and shown to be compatible with the Lorentz-Finsler case. The pr…
We propose an unified approach to loop quantum gravity and Fedosov quantization of gravity following the geometry of double spacetime fibrations and their quantum deformations. There are considered pseudo-Riemannian manifolds enabled with 1) a nonholonomic 2+2 distribution defining a nonlinear connection (N-connection) structure and 2) an Arnowitt-Deser-Misner 3+1 decomposition. The Ashtekar-Barbero variables are generalized and adapted to the N-connection structure which allows us to write the general relativity theory equivalently in terms of Lagrange-Finsler variables and related canonical …
Gravity is understood as a geometrization of spacetime. But spacetime is also the manifold of the boundary values of the spinless point particle in a variational approach. Since all known matter, baryons, leptons and gauge bosons are spinning objects, it means that the manifold, which we call the kinematical space, where we play the game of the variational formalism of an elementary particle is greater than spacetime. This manifold for any mechanical system is a Finsler metric space such that the variational formalism can always be interpreted as a geodesic problem on this space. This manifold…

Within the context of supersymmetric space-time (D-particle) foam in string/brane-theory, we discuss a Finsler-induced Cosmology and its implications for (thermal) Dark Matter abundances. This constitutes a truly microscopic model of dynamical space-time, where Finsler geometries arise naturally. The D-particle foam model involves point-like brane defects (D-particles), which provide the topologically non-trivial foamy structures of space-time. The D-particles can capture and emit stringy matter and this leads to a recoil of D-particles. It is indicated how one effect of such a recoil of D-par…
It is reasonably well-known that birefringent crystal optics can to some extent be described by the use of pseudo-Finslerian spacetimes (an extension of pseudo-Riemannian spacetime). What is less commonly appreciated is that there are two separate and quite disjoint pseudo-Finsler structures for the two photon polarizations, and further, that there are separate tangent-space pseudo-Finsler structures defined by the group velocity and co-tangent-space pseudo-co-Finsler structures defined by the phase velocity. The inter-connections between these four separate pseudo-Finsler structures are rathe…
In these lectures my aim is to review enough of conformal differential geometry in four dimensions to give an account of Penrose's conformal cyclic geometry.
In this work we study Berwald spacetimes and their vacuum dynamics, where the latter are based on a Finsler generalization of the Einstein's equations derived from an action on the unit tangent bundle. In particular, we consider a specific class of spacetimes which are non-flat generalizations of the very special relativity (VSR) line element, to which we refer as very general relativity (VGR). We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the VGR line element to be of Berwald type. We present two novel examples with the corresponding vacuum field equations: a Finslerian generalization of …
Finsler geometry is a natural and fundamental generalization of Riemann geometry. The Finsler structure depends on both coordinates and velocities. We present the arrival time delay of astroparticles subject to Lorentz violation in the framework of Finsler geometry, and the result corresponds to that derived by Jacob and Piran in the standard model of cosmology.
The widely accepted description of the present cosmic acceleration and the neutrino oscillations in terms of a cosmological constant and neutrino masses, respectively, seems conceptually not very satisfactory. From a phenomenological perspective, the possibility that those phenomena are instead the first windows to new physics at very low energies is explored.
In this article we propose some Maple procedures, for teaching purposes, to study the basics of General Relativity (GR) and Cosmology. After presenting some features of GRTensorII, a package specially built to deal with GR, we give two examples of how one can use these procedures. In the first example we build the Schwarzschild solution of Einstein equations, while in the second one we study some simple cosmological models.
The characteristic formalism in numerical relativity, which has been developed to study gravitational waves, and the observer metric approach in observational cosmology both make use of coordinate systems based on null cones. In this paper, these coordinate systems are compared and it is then demonstrated how characteristic numerical relativity can be used to investigate problems in observational cosmology. In a numerical experiment using the characteristic formalism, it is shown how the historical evolution of a LTB universe compares to that of the $Λ$CDM model given identical observational d…
Finsler geometry is a natural arena to investigate the physics of spacetimes with local Lorentz violating. The directional dependence of the Finsler metric provides a way to encode the Lorentz violating effects into the geometric structure of spacetime. Here, a classical field theory is proposed in a special Finsler geometry, the so-called Randers-Finsler spacetime, where the Lorentz violation is produced by a background vector field. By promoting the Randers-Finsler metric to a differential operator, a Finsler-invariant action for the scalar, gauge and fermions are proposed. The theory contai…
Formalising the logical dependence of physical quantities on material referents of scale, I show that both Hubble's law and the cosmological constant are in fact exactly replicable by a spatial contraction of referents locally on earth, and that the Pioneer anomaly is irrefutable indication that this is the case. The formalism literally embodies Feynman's ``hot-plate'' model, predictably yielding a logical derivation of the relativity postulates, and importantly, suffices to demonstrate the inherent logical consistency of general relativity and quantum mechanics, whose foundations I have shown…
The main consequences of de Sitter Special Relativity to the Standard Cosmological Model of Physical Cosmology are examined. The cosmological constant Lambda appears, in this theory, as a manifestation of the proper conformal current, which must be added to the usual energy-momentum density. As that conformal current itself vanishes in absence of sources, Lambda is ultimately dependent on the matter content, and can in principle be calculated. A present-day value very close to that given by the crossed supernova/BBR data is obtained through simple and reasonable approximations. Also a primeval…
We study for the first time the dynamical properties and the growth index of linear matter perturbations of the Finsler-Randers (FR) cosmological model, for which we consider that the cosmic fluid contains matter, radiation and a scalar field. Initially, for various FR scenarios we implement a critical point analysis and we find solutions which provide cosmic acceleration and under certain circumstances we can have de-Sitter points as stable late-time attractors. Then we derive the growth index of matter fluctuations in various Finsler-Randers cosmologies. Considering cold dark matter and negl…
In earlier work it was shown that a weak modification of general relativity, in the linearized approach, renders a spherically symmetric and stationary model of the Universe. This was due to the presence of a third mode of polarization in the linearized gravity in which a "curvature energy" term is present. Such term was identified as the Dark Energy of the Universe. In this letter a more realistic model is discussed. A different cosmological solution to the Einstein-Vlasov System is analysed. This solution shows reasonable results which are within the standard bounds predicted by the cosmolog…
We reformulate the standard Lagrangian formalism to a reparameterisation invariant Lagrangian formalism by means of Finsler and Kawaguchi geometry. In our formalism, various types of symmetries that appears in theories of physics are expressed geometrically by symmetries of Finsler (Kawaguchi) metric, and the conservation law of energy-momentum is a part of Euler-Lagrange equations. The application to scalar field, Dirac field, electromagnetic field and general relativity coupled to perfect fluid (added: ver.3) are discussed. By this formalism, we try to propose an alternative definition of en…
We find initial data for numerical relativity simulations of inhomogeneous cosmologies. This involves treating an exceptional case of the general relativity constraint equations. We devise analytic and numerical methods to treat this exceptional case. We apply the analytic method to the standard case of cosmology with a single scalar field. The numerical method is applied to the two-field ekpyrotic cosmology.
The modelling of light-like signals in General Relativity taking the form of impulsive gravitational waves and light-like shells of matter is examined. Systematic deductions from the Bianchi identities are made. These are based upon Penrose's hierarchical classification of the geometry induced on the null hypersurface history of the surface by its imbedding in the space-times to the future and to the past of it. The signals are not confined to propagate in a vacuum and thus their interaction with matter (a burst of radiation propagating through a cosmic fluid, for example) is also studied. Res…
We review an attempt to set a suitable foundational principle for consistent quantization of gravity based on the canonical formulation. It requires extending the spacetime description of the relativistic postulates to also encompass an alternative formulation in momentum-energy continuum where the inertial physical laws can be equivalently described. The extension to noninertial frames breaks such an equivalence, leaving a new dynamical field which, together with gravity, allows to construct a canonical scenario where the Dirac's quantization method leads to consistent definitions of hermitia…
