This article concerns the $p$-basic set existence problem in the representation theory of finite groups. We show that, for any odd prime $p$, the alternating group $\A_n$ has a $p$-basic set. More precisely, we prove that the symmetric group $\sym_n$ has a $p$-basic set with some additional properties, allowing us to deduce a $p$-basic set for $\A_n$. Our main tool is the generalized perfect isometries introduced by Külshammer, Olsson and Robinson. As a consequence we obtain some results on the decomposition number of $\A_n$.
We study the modular representation theory of the symmetric and alternating groups. One of the most natural ways to label the irreducible representations of a given group or algebra in the modular case is to show the unitriangularity of the decomposition matrices, that is, the existence of a unitriangular basic set. We study several ways to obtain such sets in the general case of a symmetric algebra. We apply our results to the symmetric groups and to their Hecke algebras and thus obtain new ways to label the simple modules for these objects. Finally, we show that these sets do not always exis…
In this note, we construct a 2-basic set of the alternating group \A_n. To do this, we construct a 2-basic set of the symmetric group \sym_n with an additional property, such that its restriction to \A_n is a 2-basic set. We adapt here a method developed in \cite{BrGr} for the case when the characteristic is odd. One of the main tools is the generalized perfect isometries defined by Külshammer, Olsson and Robinson in \cite{KOR}.
In this paper, following the methods of http://arxiv.org/abs/1305.7449v2, we show that the double covering groups of the symmetric and alternating groups have p-basic sets for any odd prime p.
In this paper we study irreducible tensor products of representations of alternating groups in characteristics 2 and 3. In characteristic 3 we completely classify irreducible tensor products, while in characteristic 2 we completely classify irreducible tensor products where none of the modules appearing in the product is a basic spin module. In characteristic 2 we also give some necessary conditions for the tensor product of an irreducible module with a basic spin module to be irreducible.
We study the existence of unitriangular basic sets for the symmetric group which behave nicely with respect to the Mullineux involution. Such sets give a natural labelling for the modular irreducible representations. We show that, for any odd prime p, the p-blocks of the symmetric group with weight 2 have stable unitriangular basic sets which we describe by studying the combinatorics of partitions in these blocks.
In this paper we completely characterise irreducible tensor products of representations of alternating groups in characteristic 2 of a basic spin module with an irreducible module. This completes the classification of irreducible tensor products of representations of alternating groups.
We prove that the inductive AM condition introduced by Britta Späth is true for the simple alternating groups in characteristic 2. To achieve this we give an equivalent of a well known result on blocks of the symmetric groups with the same weight to 2-blocks of double cover of alternating groups.
We show that any two homomorphisms of the alternating group A_5 into E_8 (over the complex numbers) whose images has finite centralizers are conjugate under E_8. This, in conjunction with earlier work of Frey, completes the classification up to G-conjugacy of homomorphisms of A_5 into a simple adjoint algebraic group over the complex numbers.
In this paper, we prove that a refinement of the Alperin-McKay Conjecture for $p$-blocks of finite groups, formulated by I. M. Isaacs and G. Navarro in 2002, holds for all covering groups of the symmetric and alternating groups, whenever $p$ is an odd prime.
We show that the Sylow $p$-subgroups of a symmetric group, respectively an alternating group, are characterized as the $p$-subgroups containing all elementary abelian $p$-subgroups up to conjugacy of the symmetric group, respectively the alternating group. We apply the characterization result for symmetric groups to compute the vertices of the hook Specht modules associated to the partition $(kp-p,1^p)$ under the assumption that $k \equiv 1$ mod $p$ and $k \not\equiv 1$ mod $p^2$.
Let $X$ be a character table of the symmetric group $S_n$. It is shown that unless $n = 4$ or $n=6$, there is a unique way to assign partitions of $n$ to the rows and columns of $X$ so that for all $λ$ and $ν$, $X_{λν}$ is equal to $χ^λ(ν)$, the value of the irreducible character of $S_n$ labelled by $λ$ on elements of cycle type $ν$. Analogous results are proved for alternating groups, and for the Brauer character tables of symmetric and alternating groups.
For $n\geq 5$ the natural permutation module for the alternating group $\mathfrak{A}_n$ has a unique non-trivial composition factor, being called its natural simple module. We determine the vertices and sources of the natural simple $\mathfrak{A}_n$-module over fields of characteristic 2.
O. Brunat and J. Gramain recently proved that any two blocks of double covers of symmetric groups are Broué perfectly isometric provided they have the same weight and sign. They also proved a corresponding statement for double covers of alternating groups and Broué perfect isometries between double covers of symmetric and alternating groups when the blocks have opposite signs. Using both the results and methods of O. Brunat and J. Gramain in this paper we prove that when the weight of a block of a double cover of a symmetric or alternating group is less than $p$ then the block is Broué perfect…
Young's orthogonal basis is a classical basis for an irreducible representation of a symmetric group. This basis happens to be a Gelfand-Tsetlin basis for the chain of symmetric groups. It is well-known that the chain of alternating groups, just like the chain of symmetric groups, has multiplicity-free restrictions for irreducible representations. Therefore each irreducible representation of an alternating group also admits Gelfand-Tsetlin bases. Moreover, each such representation is either the restriction of, or a subrepresentation of, the restriction of an irreducible representation of a sym…
An irreducible character of a finite group $G$ is called quasi $p$-Steinberg character for a prime $p$ if it takes a nonzero value on every $p$-regular element of $G$. In this article, we classify the quasi $p$-Steinberg characters of Symmetric ($S_n$) and Alternating ($A_n$) groups and their double covers. In particular, an existence of a non-linear quasi $p$-Steinberg character of $S_n$ implies $n \leq 8$ and of $A_n$ implies $n \leq 9$.
Let p be an odd prime, and A_n the alternating group of degree n. We determine which ordinary irreducible representations of A_n remain irreducible in characteristic p, verifying the author's conjecture from [Represent. Theory 14, 601-626]. Given the preparatory work done in [op. cit.], our task is to determine which self-conjugate partitions label Specht modules for the symmetric group in characteristic p having exactly two composition factors. This is accomplished through the use of the Robinson-Brundan-Kleshchev 'i-restriction' functors, together with known results on decomposition numbers …
We prove that the alternating groups of degree at least $5$ are uniquely determined up to an abelian direct factor by the degrees of their irreducible complex representations. This confirms Huppert's Conjecture for alternating groups.
We construct a subalgebra of the Hecke algebra of type A. This is a generalization of the group algebra of the alternating groups. All the equivalent classes of irreducible representations of the subalgebra and the q-analogue of the branching rule between symmetric groups and alternating groups is obtained.
We prove that non-trivial representations of the alternating group $A_n$ are reducible over a primitive proper subgroup which is isomorphic to some alternating group $A_m$.
We restrict irreducible characters of alternating groups of degree divisible by $p$ to their Sylow $p$-subgroups and study the number of linear constituents.
We describe a purely group-theoretic condition on an element g of a finite group G which implies that g has coefficient zero in every central idempotent element of the group ring RG, provided that R is a ring of prime characteristic. We use this condition to prove that the fusion system associated to a block of an alternating group is always isomorphic to the group fusion system of an alternating group.
A conjugacy class $C$ of a finite group $G$ is a sign conjugacy class if every irreducible character of $G$ takes value 0, 1 or -1 on $C$. In this paper we classify the sign conjugacy classes of alternating groups.
We show that each block of an alternating group over an arbitrary complete discrete valuation ring is splendidly Rickard equivalent to its Brauer correspondent. This provides new evidence for a refined version of Broué's abelian defect group conjecture proposed by Kessar and Linckelmann.
We investigate the endotrivial modules for the Schur covers of the symmetric and alternating groups and determine the structure of their group of endotrivial modules in all characteristics. We provide a full description of this group by generators and relations in all cases.
We classify the irreducible projective representations of symmetric and alternating groups of minimal possible and second minimal possible dimensions, and get a lower bound for the third minimal dimension. On the way we obtain some new results on branching which might be of independent interest.
In [7], G. Navarro proposed a refinement of the McKay conjecture involving a special class of Galois automorphisms. In [6] this new conjecture was verified by the author for the alternating groups A(n) when p=2. In this note the Navarro conjecture is verified for the p-singular characters of the principal block of the alternating groups in the case of abelian defect when p is odd.
We study irreducible restrictions from modules over alternating groups to subgroups. We get reduction results which substantially restrict the classes of subgroups and modules for which this is possible. This is known when the characteristic of the ground field is greater than $3$, but the small characteristics cases require a substantially more delicate analysis and new ideas. In view of our earlier work on symmetric groups we may consider only the restriction of irreducible modules over alternating groups which do not extend to symmetric groups. This work fits into the Aschbacher-Scott progr…
We establish Schur-Weyl reciprocity for the q-analogue of the alternating group. We analyze the sign q-permutation representation of the Hecke algebra on the tensor product of the super vector space V in detail, and examine its restriction to the q-analogue of the alternating group. In consequence, we find out that if the dimensions of even part and odd part of V are same, then the centralizer of the q-analogue of the alternating group is a Z_2-crossed product of the centralizer of the Hecke algebra and obtain Schur-Weyl reciprocity between them. Though the structure of the centralizer is more…
For any finite group G it is an interesting question to ask which ordinary irreducible representations of G remain irreducible in a given characteristic p. We answer this question for p=2 when G is the proper double cover of the alternating group. As a key ingredient in the proof, we prove a formula for the decomposition numbers in Rouquier blocks of double covers of symmetric groups, in terms of Schur P-functions.
We prove the existence of Morita equivalences between the spin blocks at the extremal points of strings in the block-reduced crystal graph. When the parities of the core partitions are not preserved, these equivalences require crossovers, with a block of the symmtric group Morita equivalent to a block of the alternating group and vice versa. The result permits in improvement of the bound for Donovan's Conjecture given by Kessar.
Building on reduction theorems and dimension bounds for symmetric groups obtained in our earlier work, we classify the irreducible restrictions of representations of the symmetric and alternating groups to proper subgroups. Such classification is known when the characteristic of the ground field is greater than $3$, but the small characteristics cases require a substantially more delicate analysis and new ideas. Our results fit into the Aschbacher-Scott program on maximal subgroups of finite classical groups.
Using combinatorics and character theory, we determine the imprimitive faithful complex characters, i.e., the irreducible faithful complex characters which are induced from proper subgroups, of the Schur covers of the symmetric and alternating groups. Furthermore, for every imprimitive character we establish all its minimal block stabilizers. As a corollary, we also determine the monomial faithful characters of the Schur covers.
Recently Navarro proposed a strengthening of the unsolved McKay conjecture using Galois automorphisms. We prove that the Navarro conjecture holds for the alternating groups when the prime p is odd.
Given a finite group $G$ and a faithful irreducible $FG$-module $V$ where $F$ has prime order, does $G$ have a regular orbit on $V$? This problem is equivalent to determining which primitive permutation groups of affine type have a base of size 2. In this paper, we classify the pairs $(G,V)$ for which $G$ has a regular orbit on $V$ where $G$ is a covering group of a symmetric or alternating group and $V$ is a faithful irreducible $FG$-module such that the order of $F$ is prime and divides the order of $G$.
The main result of this paper shows that, over large enough fields of characteristic different from $2$, the alternating Hecke algebras are $\mathbb{Z}$-graded algebras that are isomorphic to fixed-point subalgebras of the quiver Hecke algebra of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. As a special case, this shows that the group algebra of the alternating group, over large enough fields of characteristic different from $2$, is a $\mathbb{Z}$-graded algebra. We give a homogeneous presentation for these algebras, compute their graded dimension and show that the blocks of the quiver Hecke algebras…
Let $G$ be an almost simple group with socle $A_n$, the alternating group of degree $n$. We prove that there is a unit of order $pq$ in the integral group ring of $G$ if and only if there is an element of that order in $G$ provided $p$ and $q$ are primes greater than $\frac{n}{3}$. We combine this with some explicit computations to verify the Prime Graph Question for all almost simple groups with socle $A_n$ if $n \leq 17$.
Motivated by a recent conjecture of Zabrocki, Wallach described the alternants in the super-coinvariant algebra of the symmetric group in one set of commuting and one set of anti-commuting variables under the diagonal action. We give a type-independent generalization of Wallach's result to all real reflection groups $G$. As an intermediate step, we explicitly describe the alternating super-polynomials in $k[V] \otimes Λ(V)$ for all complex reflection groups, providing an analogue of a classic result of Solomon which describes the invariant super-polynomials in $k[V] \otimes Λ(V^*)$. Using our …
We obtain vanishing ranges for the mod $p$ cohomology of alternating subgroups of finite $p$-free Coxeter groups. Here a Coxeter group $W$ is $p$-free if the order of the product $st$ is prime to $p$ for every pair of Coxeter generators $s,t$ of $W$. Our result generalizes those for alternating groups formerly proved by Kleshchev-Nakano and Burichenko. As a byproduct, we obtain vanishing ranges for the twisted cohomology of finite $p$-free Coxeter groups with coefficients in the sign representations. In addition, a weak version of the main result is proved for a certain class of infinite Coxet…
We prove that the double covers of the alternating and symmetric groups are determined by their complex group algebras. To be more precise, let $n\geq 5$ be an integer, $G$ a finite group, and let $\AAA$ and $\SSS^\pm$ denote the double covers of $\Al_n$ and $\Sy_n$, respectively. We prove that $\CC G\cong \CC \AAA$ if and only if $G\cong \AAA$, and $\CC G\cong \CC \SSS^+\cong\CC\SSS^-$ if and only if $G\cong \SSS^+$ or $\SSS^-$. This in particular completes the proof of a conjecture proposed by the second and fourth authors that every finite quasi-simple group is determined uniquely up to iso…

Let $G$ be a finite group, and $α$ a nontrivial character of $G$. The McKay graph $\mathcal{M}(G,α)$ has the irreducible characters of $G$ as vertices, with an edge from $χ_1$ to $χ_2$ if $χ_2$ is a constituent of $αχ_1$. We study the diameters of McKay graphs for finite simple groups $G$. For alternating groups, we prove a conjecture made in [LST]: there is an absolute constant $C$ such that $\hbox{diam}\,{\mathcal M}(G,α) \le C\frac{\log |\mathsf{A}_n|}{\log α(1)}$ for all nontrivial irreducible characters $α$ of $\mathsf{A}_n$. Also for classsical groups of symplectic or orthogonal type of …
Let m be an integer greater than 2 and let V be a vector space of dimension 2^m over F_2. Let Q be a non-degenerate quadratic form of maximal Witt index defined on V. We show that the symmetric group S_{2m+1} acts on V as a group of isometries of Q and permutes the members of a partial orthogonal spread of size 2m+1. This implies that any group of even order 2m or odd order 2m+1 acts transitively and regularly on a partial orthogonal spread in V. We also show that the alternating group A_9 acts in a natural manner on a complete spread of size 9 defined on a vector space of dimension 8 over F_2…
We prove there is no ring with unit group isomorphic to S_n for n \geq 5 and that there is no ring with unit group isomorphic to A_n for n \geq 5, n \neq 8. We give examples of rings with unit groups isomorphic to S_1, S_2, S_3, S_4, A_1, A_2, A_3, A_4, and A_8. We expect our methods to work similarly for other groups with trivial center; in particular, we plan to consider other simple groups in later work.
We prove the non-existence of Hopf orders over number rings for two families of complex semisimple Hopf algebras. They are constructed as Drinfel'd twists of group algebras for the following groups: $A_n$, the alternating group on $n$ elements, with $n \geq 5$; and $S_{2m}$, the symmetric group on $2m$ elements, with $m \geq 4$ even. The twist for $A_n$ arises from a $2$-cocycle on the Klein four-group contained in $A_4$. The twist for $S_{2m}$ arises from a $2$-cocycle on a subgroup generated by certain transpositions which is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_2^m$. This provides more examples of com…
