It is known by the Conley's theorem that the chain recurrent set $CR(ϕ)$ of a deterministic flow $ϕ$ on a compact metric space is the complement of the union of sets $B(A)-A$, where $A$ varies over the collection of attractors and $B(A)$ is the basin of attraction of $A$. It has recently been shown that a similar decomposition result holds for random dynamical systems on noncompact separable complete metric spaces, but under a so-called \emph{absorbing condition}. In the present paper, the authors introduce a notion of random chain recurrent sets for random dynamical systems, and then prove the random Conley's theorem on noncompact separable complete metric spaces \emph{without} the absorbing condition.
Fathi and Pageault have recently shown a connection between Auslander's generalized recurrent set $GR(f)$ and Easton's strong chain recurrent set. We study $GR(f)$ by examining that connection in more detail, as well as connections with other notions of recurrence. We give equivalent definitions that do not refer to a metric. In particular, we show that $GR(f^k)=GR(f)$ for any $k>0$, and give a characterization of maps for which the generalized recurrent set is different from the ordinary chain recurrent set.
This paper considers the egodicity properties in iterated function systems. First, we will introduce chain mixing and chain transitive iterated function systems then some results and examples are presented to compare with these notions in discrete dynamical systems. As our main result, using adding machine maps and topological conjugacy we show that chain mixing, chain transitive and chain recurrence properties in iterated function systems are equivalent.
For a continuous flow on a compact metric space, the aim of this paper is to prove a Conley-type decomposition of the strong chain recurrent set. We first discuss in details the main properties of strong chain recurrent sets. We then introduce the notion of strongly stable set as an invariant set which is the intersection of the $ω$-limits of a specific family of nested and definitively invariant neighborhoods of itself. This notion strengthens the one of stable set; moreover, any attractor results strongly stable. We then show that strongly stable sets play the role of attractors in the decom…
We prove the existence of a continuous Morse energy function for an arbitrary topological flow with finite hyperbolic (in topological sense) chain recurrent set on a topological manifold of any dimension. This result is a partial solution of the Morse problem of existence of continuous Morse functions on any topological manifolds. Namely, we prove that a topological manifold admits a continuous Morse function if it admits a topological flow with finite hyperbolic chain recurrent set.
The aim of this paper is to study in detail the relations between strong chain recurrence for flows and Lyapunov functions. For a continuous flow on a compact metric space, uniformly Lipschitz continuous on the compact subsets of the time, we first make explicit a Lipschitz continuous Lyapunov function strict -that is strictly decreasing- outside the strong chain recurrent set of the flow. This construction extends to flows some recent advances of Fathi and Pageault in the case of homeomorphisms; moreover, it improves Conley's result about the existence of a continuous Lyapunov function strict…
Let $ϕ:X\times\mathbb{R} \rightarrow X$ be a continuous flow on a compact metric space $(X,d)$. In this article we constructively prove the existence of a continuous Lyapunov function for $ϕ$ which is strictly decreasing outside $\mathcal{SCR}_d(ϕ)$. Such a result generalizes Conley's Fundamental Theorem of Dynamical Systems for the strong chain recurrent set.
We describe a rigorous and efficient computer algorithm for building a model of the dynamics of a polynomial diffeomorphism of C^2 on its chain recurrent set, and for sorting points into approximate chain transitive components. Further, we give explicit estimates which quantify how well this algorithm approximates the chain recurrent set and distinguishes the chain transitive components. We also discuss our implementation for the family of Henon mappings, f_{a,c}(x,y) = (x^2 + c - ay, x), into a computer program called Hypatia, and give several examples of running Hypatia on Henon mappings.
Let $ R $ be a rational map with totally disconnected Julia set $ J(R). $ If the postcritical set on $ J(R) $ contains a non-persistently recurrent (or conical) point, then we show that the map $ R $ can not be a structurally stable map.
For $C^0$ generic continuous maps or homeomorphisms on compact Riemannian manifold, we prove that (1) the space of physical-like measures coincides with the set of invariant measures supported on chain recurrent classes, (2) every point in the base space is typical (that is, for any point in the base space, its empirical measures are contained in the space of physical-like measures) and (3) there is a subset of strongly regular set with Lebesgue zero measure but has infinite topological entropy. Moreover, some comparison between $C^0$ generic systems and $C^0$ conservative generic systems are …
In present paper we mainly focus on non-recurrent dynamical orbits with empty syndetic center and show that twelve different statistical structures over mixing expanding maps or transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms all have dynamical complexity in the sense of strongly distributional chaos.
In the recent publication (arxiv:2007.08063v2 [cs.LG]) a fast prediction algorithm for a single recurrent network (RN) was suggested. In this manuscript we generalize this approach to a chain of RNs and show that it can be implemented in natural neural systems. When the network is used recursively to predict sequence of values the proposed algorithm does not require to store the original input sequence. It increases robustness of the new approach compared to the standard moving/expanding window predictive procedure. We consider requirements on trained networks that allow to implement the propo…
We prove for a generic star vector field $X$ that, if for every chain recurrent class $C$ of $X$ all singularities in $C$ have the same index, then the chain recurrent set of $X$ is singular hyperbolic. We also prove that every Lyapunov stable chain recurrent class of $X$ is singular hyperbolic. As a corollary, we prove that the chain recurrent set of a generic 4-dimensional star flow is singular hyperbolic.
We show that every invertible strong mixing transformation on a Lebesgue space has strictly over-recurrent sets. Also, we give an explicit procedure for constructing strong mixing transformations with no under-recurrent sets. This answers both parts of a question of V. Bergelson. We define $ε$-over-recurrence and show that given $ε> 0$, any ergodic measure preserving invertible transformation (including discrete spectrum) has $ε$-over-recurrent sets of arbitrarily small measure. Discrete spectrum transformations and rotations do not have over-recurrent sets, but we construct a weak mixing rigi…
We consider topological Markov chains (also called Markov shifts) on countable graphs. We show that a transient graph can be extended to a recurrent graph of equal entropy which is either positive recurrent of null recurrent, and we give an example of each type. We extend the notion of local entropy to topological Markov chains and prove that a transitive Markov chain admits a measure of maximal entropy (or maximal measure) whenever its local entropy is less than its (global) entropy.
We show that for a $C^1$ residual subset of diffeomorphisms far away from homoclinic tangency, the stable manifolds of periodic points cover a dense subset of the ambient manifold. This gives a partial proof to a conjecture of C. Bonatti.
Let 0-CR denote the class of all metric compacta X such that the set of maps $f:X\to X$ with 0-dimensional sets CR(f) of chain recurrent points is a dense $G_δ$-subset of the mapping space C(X,X) (with the uniform convergence). We prove, among others, that countable products of polyhedra or locally connected curves belong to 0-CR. Compacta that admit, for each $ε>0$, an $ε$-retraction onto a subspace from 0-CR belong to 0-CR themselves. Perfect ANR-compacta or n-dimensional $LC^{n-1}$-compacta have perfect CR(f) for a generic self-map f. In the cases of polyhedra, compact Hilbert cube manifold…
We show that non-trivial chain recurrent classes for generic $C^1$ star flows satisfy a dichotomy: either they have zero topological entropy, or they must be isolated. Moreover, chain recurrent classes for generic star flows with zero entropy must be sectional hyperbolic, and cannot be detected by any non-trivial ergodic invariant probability. As a result, we show that $C^1$ generic star flows have only finitely many Lyapunov stable chain recurrent classes.
Let $(Σ, σ)$ be the one-sided shift space with $m$ symbols and $R_n(x)$ be the first return time of $x\inΣ$ to the $n$-th cylinder containing $x$. Denote $$E^φ_{α,β}=\left\{x\inΣ: \liminf_{n\to\infty}\frac{\log R_n(x)}{φ(n)}=α,\ \limsup_{n\to\infty}\frac{\log R_n(x)}{φ(n)}=β\right\},$$ where $φ: \mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{R}^+$ is a monotonically increasing function and $0\leqα\leqβ\leq +\infty$. We show that the Hausdorff dimension of the set $E^φ_{α,β}$ admits a dichotomy: it is either zero or one depending on $φ, α$ and $β$.
We study invariant Fatou components for holomorphic endomorphisms in $\mathbb{P}^2$. In the recurrent case these components were classified by Sibony and the second author in 1995. In 2008 Ueda completed this classification by proving that it is not possible for the limit set to be a punctured disk. Recently Lyubich and the third author classified non-recurrent invariant Fatou components, under the additional hypothesis that the limit set is unique. Again all possibilities in this classification were known to occur, except for the punctured disk. Here we show that the punctured disk can indeed…
A shadowable point for a flow is a point where the shadowing lemma holds for pseudo-orbits passing through it. We prove that this concept satisfies the following properties: the set of shadowable points is invariant and a $G_δ$ set. A flow has the pseudo-orbit tracing property if and only if every point is shadowable. The chain recurrent and nonwandering sets coincide when every chain recurrent point is shadowable. The chain recurrent points which are shadowable are exactly those that can be are approximated by periodic points when the flow is expansive. We study the relations between shadowab…
This paper studies topological definitions of chain recurrence and shadowing for continuous endomorphisms of topological groups generalizing the relevant concepts for metric spaces. It is proved that in this case the sets of chain recurrent points and chain transitive component of the identity are topological subgroups. Furthermore, it is obtained that some dynamical properties induced by the original system on quotient spaces. These results link an algebraic property to a dynamical property.
Conley in \cite{Con} constructed a complete Lyapunov function for a flow on compact metric space which is constant on orbits in the chain recurrent set and is strictly decreasing on orbits outside the chain recurrent set. This indicates that the dynamical complexity focuses on the chain recurrent set and the dynamical behavior outside the chain recurrent set is quite simple. In this paper, a similar result is obtained for random dynamical systems under the assumption that the base space $(Ω,\mathcal F,\mathbb P)$ is a separable metric space endowed with a probability measure. By constructing a…
For every $k\in \mathbb{N}$, we produce a set of integers which is $k$-recurrent but not $(k+1)$-recurrent. This extends a result of Furstenberg who produced a 1-recurrent set which is not 2-recurrent. We discuss a similar result for convergence of multiple ergodic averages. Finally, we also point out a combinatorial consequence related to Szemer\' edi's theorem.
For continuous maps of compact metric spaces $f:X\to X$ and $g:Y\to Y$ and for various notions of topological recurrence, we study the relationship between recurrence for $f$ and $g$ and recurrence for the product map $f\times g:X\times Y \to X\times Y$. For the generalized recurrent set $GR$, we see that $GR(f\times g)=GR(f)\times GR(g)$. For the nonwandering set $NW$, we see that $NW(f\times g)\subset NW(f)\times NW(g)$ and give necessary and sufficient conditions on $f$ for equality for every $g$. We also consider product recurrence for the chain recurrent set, the strong chain recurrent se…
We study convergence of return- and hitting-time distributions of small sets $E_{k}$ with $μ(E_{k})\rightarrow0$ in recurrent ergodic dynamical systems preserving an infinite measure $μ$. Some properties which are easy in finite measure situations break down in this null-recurrent setup. However, in the presence of a uniform set $Y$ with wandering rate regularly varying of index $1-α$ with $α\in(0,1]$, there is a scaling function suitable for all subsets of $Y$. In this case, we show that return distributions for the $E_{k}$ converge iff the corresponding hitting time distributions do, and we …
In this paper we shown that the chain control sets of induced systems on flag manifolds coincides with their analogous one defined via semigroup actions. Consequently, any chain control set of the system contains a control set with nonempty interior and, if the number of the control sets with nonempty interior coincides with the number of the chain control sets, then the closure of any control set with nonempty interior is a chain control set.
We study recurrence and non-recurrence sets for dynamical systems on compact spaces, in particular for products of rotations on the unit circle T. A set of integers is called r-Bohr if it is recurrent for all products of r rotations on T, and Bohr if it is recurrent for all products of rotations on T. It is a result due to Katznelson that for each r there exist sets of integers which are r-Bohr but not (r+1)-Bohr. We present new examples of r-Bohr sets which are not Bohr, thanks to a construction which is both flexible and completely explicit. Our results are related to an old combinatorial pr…
We shall address the alternative definition of chain recurrent set for the action of a semigroup of continuous self maps, given by M. Hurley \cite {mh} in noncompact space. Following this, we shall address the characterization of chain recurrence in terms of attractors given by C. Conley in \cite {conley}.
We approximate a chain recurrent dynamical system by periodic dynamical systems. This is similar to the well known Bohr theorem on approximation of almost periodic functions by periodic functions.
A subset $A$ of $\nats$ is called an IP-set if $A$ contains all finite sums of distinct terms of some infinite sequence $(x_n)_{n\in \nats} $ of natural numbers. Central sets, first introduced by Furstenberg using notions from topological dynamics, constitute a special class of IP-sets possessing rich combinatorial properties: Each central set contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions, and solutions to all partition regular systems of homogeneous linear equations. In this paper we investigate central sets in the framework of combinatorics on words. Using various families of uniformly r…
We study shadowing and chain recurrence in the context of linear operators acting on Banach spaces or even on normed vector spaces. We show that for linear operators there is only one chain recurrent set, and this set is actually a closed invariant subspace. We prove that every chain transitive linear dynamical system with the shadowing property is frequently hypercyclic, and as a corollary obtain that every shadowing hypercyclic linear dynamical system is frequently hypercyclic.
In \cite {kl1}, we extended various notions of recurrence for the generalized semigroup analogous to their counterpart in the classical theory of dynamics. In this paper, we shall address the alternative definition of chain recurrent set in terms of attractors, given by Hurley in \cite {mh} following Conley\rq{}s characterization in \cite {conley}. We shall also discuss the notion of topological transitivity and chain transitivity in this general setting.
Using ideas borrowed from topological dynamics and ergodic theory we introduce topological and metric versions of the recurrence property for general Markov chains. The main question of interest here is how large is the set of recurrent points. We show that under some mild technical assumptions the set of non recurrent points is of zero reference measure. Necessary and sufficient conditions for a reference measure $m$ (which needs not to be dynamically invariant) to satisfy this property are obtained. These results are new even in the purely deterministic setting.
For a right-invariant control system on a flag manifold $\mathbb{F}_Θ$ of a real semisimple Lie group, we relate the $\mathfrak{a}$-Lyapunov exponents to the Lyapunov exponents of the system over regular points. Moreover, we adapt the concept of partial hyperbolicity from the theory of smooth dynamical systems to control-affine systems, and we completely characterize the partially hyperbolic chain control sets on $\mathbb{F}_Θ$.
Let $f \colon X \to X$ be a continuous map on a compact metric space $X$ and let $α_f$, $ω_f$ and $ICT_f$ denote the set of $α$-limit sets, $ω$-limit sets and nonempty closed internally chain transitive sets respectively. In this paper we characterise, by introducing novel variants of shadowing, maps for which every element of $ICT_f$ is equal to (resp. may be approximated by) the $α$-limit set and the $ω$-limit set of the same full trajectory. We construct examples highlighting the difference between these properties.
We define shadowable points for homeomorphism on metric spaces. In the compact case we will prove the following results: The set of shadowable points is invariant, possibly nonempty or noncompact. A homeomorphism has the pseudo-orbit tracing property if and only if every point is shadowable. The chain recurrent and nonwandering sets coincides when every chain recurrent point is shadowable. Minimal or distal homeomorphisms of compact connected metric spaces have no shadowable points. The space is totally disconnected at every shadowable point for distal homeomorphisms (and conversely for equico…
In this paper we provide examples of topological dynamical systems having either finite or countable scrambled sets. In particular we study conditions for the existence of Li-Yorke, asymptotic and distal pairs in constant--length substitution dynamical systems. Starting from a circle rotation we also construct a dynamical system having Li--Yorke pairs, none of which is recurrent.
We study sets of integers that can be defined by the vanishing of a generalised polynomial expression. We show that this includes sets of values of linear recurrent sequences of Salem type and some linear recurrent sequences of Pisot type. To this end, we introduce the notion of a generalised polynomial on a number field. We establish a connection between the existence of generalised polynomial expressions for sets of values of linear recurrent sequences and for subsemigroups of multiplicative groups of number fields.
Chaotic attractors, chaotic saddles and periodic orbits are examples of chain-recurrent sets. Using arbitrary small controls, a trajectory starting from any point in a chain-recurrent set can be steered to any other in that set. The qualitative behavior of a dynamical system can be encapsulated in a graph. Its nodes are chain-recurrent sets. There is an edge from node A to node B if, using arbitrary small controls, a trajectory starting from any point of A can be steered to any point of B. We discuss physical systems that have infinitely many disjoint coexisting nodes. Such infinite collection…
