We demonstrate the use of Langevin spin dynamics for studying dynamical properties of an archetypical spin glass system. Simulations are performed on CuMn (20% Mn) where we study the relaxation that follows a sudden quench of the system to the low temperature phase. The system is modeled by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian where the Heisenberg interaction parameters are calculated by means of first-principles density functional theory. Simulations are performed by numerically solving the Langevin equations of motion for the atomic spins. It is shown that dynamics is governed, to a large degree, by the damping parameter in the equations of motion and the system size. For large damping and large system sizes we observe the typical aging regime.
Mn 2p soft X-ray absorption (XAS) spectroscopy excited with circularly polarized synchrotron radiation has been applied to a new class of material, c(2x2)CuMn/Cu(001) two-dimensional ordered surface alloy. A significant X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) signal has been clearly observed at T=25K, indicating the existence of the ferromagnetic state under the external magnetic field of 1.4 Tesla. The lineshape analyses of the XAS and XMCD spectra clearly show that the Mn 3d state is rather localized and has a high spin magnetic moment due to its half-filled character.
An archetypical spin-glass metallic alloy, Cu0.83Mn0.17, is studied by means of an ab-initio based approach. First-principles calculations are employed to obtain effective chemical, strain-induced and magnetic exchange interactions, as well as static atomic displacements, and the interactions are subsequently used in thermodynamic simulations. It is shown that the calculated atomic and magnetic short-range order accurately reproduces the results of neutron-scattering experiments. In particular, it is confirmed that the alloy exhibits a tendency toward ordering and the corresponding ordered pha…
The magnetic properties of trilayers consisting of a diluted magnetic alloy, CuMn (Cu0.99Mn0.01), a soft ferromagnet, Py(Ni0.8Fe0.2), and an antiferromagnet, alpha-Fe2O3, were investigated. The samples, grown by UHV magnetron sputtering, were magnetically characterized in the temperature range T = 3-100 K. Typical exchange bias features, namely clear hysteresis cycle shifts and coercivity enhancements, were observed. Moreover the presence of an inverse bias, which had been already reported for spin glass-based structures, was also obtained in a well defined range of temperatures and CuMn thick…
Atomistic simulations were carried out to analyze the interaction between $< a>$ basal dislocations and precipitates in Mg-Al alloys and the associated strengthening mechanisms.
We have measured spin Hall effects in spin glass metals, CuMnBi alloys, with the spin absorption method in the lateral spin valve structure. Far above the spin glass temperature Tg where the magnetic moments of Mn impurities are randomly frozen, the spin Hall angle of CuMnBi ternary alloy is as large as that of CuBi binary alloy. Surprisingly, however, it starts to decrease at about 4Tg and becomes as little as 7 times smaller at 0.5Tg. A similar tendency was also observed in anomalous Hall effects in the ternary alloys. We propose an explanation in terms of a simple model considering the rela…
Solute clusters affect the physical properties of alloys. Knowledge of the atomic structure of solute clusters is a prerequisite for material optimisation. In this study, solute clusters in a rapid-hardening Al-Cu-Mg alloy were characterised by a combination of atom probe tomography and density functional theory, making use of a hybrid data type that combines lattice rectification and data completion to directly input experimental data into atomistic simulations. The clusters input to the atomistic simulations are thus observed experimentally, reducing the number of possible configurations. Ou…
Mg grain boundary (GB) segregation and GB diffusion can impact the processing and properties of Al-Mg alloys. Yet, Mg GB diffusion in Al has not been measured experimentally or predicted by simulations. We apply atomistic computer simulations to predict the amount and the free energy of Mg GB segregation, and the impact of segregation on GB diffusion of both alloy components. At low temperatures, Mg atoms segregated to a tilt GB form clusters with highly anisotropic shapes. Mg diffuses in Al GBs slower than Al itself, and both components diffuse slowly in comparison with Al GB self-diffusion. …
In this work, a multiscale approach based on phase field was developed to simulate the microstructure's evolution under irradiation in binary systems, from atomic to microstructural scale. For that purpose, an efficient numerical scheme was developed. In the case of AgCu alloy under Krypton ions irradiation, phenomenological parameters were computed using atomistic methods, as a function of the temperature and the irradiation flux. As a result, we predicted the influence of the irradiation flux and the temperature on the formation of patterned microstructures. In the case of AgCu, our model wa…
We present a first-principles atomistic thermodynamics framework to describe the structure, composition and segregation profile of an alloy surface in contact with a (reactive) environment. The method is illustrated with the application to a Ag3Pd(111) surface in an oxygen atmosphere, and we analyze trends in segregation, adsorption and surface free energies. We observe a wide range of oxygen adsorption energies on the various alloy surface configurations, including binding that is stronger than on a Pd(111) surface and weaker than that on a Ag(111) surface. This and the consideration of even …
A scale bridging strategy based in molecular statics and molecular dynamics simulations in combination with transition state theory has been developed to determine the flow stress of Al-Cu alloy containing Guinier-Preston zones. The athermal contribution to the flow stress was determined from the Taylor model, while the thermal contribution was obtained from the obstacle strength and the free energy barrier. These two magnitudes were obtained by means of molecular statics and molecular dynamics simulations of the interaction of edge dislocations with Guinier-Preston zones in two different orie…
We have applied extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analyses and ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations to study the atomic structure of Ag-doped (up to 42%) Ge1Sb2Te4 alloys. Analysis of the models that are consistent with the EXAFS experiment reveals that the Ge environment is significantly modified by Ag doping whereas those of Sb and Te are barely affected (except for high Ag concentrations), and suggests that Ag prefers bonding with Te to Ge or Sb. Doping with Ag promotes the conversion of tetrahedral Ge sites to octahedral Ge sites and enhances the speed of crystall…
Single femtosecond pulse toggle switching of ferrimagnetic alloys is an essential building block for ultrafast spintronics. Very different element-specific demagnetization dynamics is believed to be a hard limit for switching in ferrimagnets. This suggests that ferrimagnets composed of two ions of different nature, such as rare earth transition metal alloys, are necessary for switching. However, experimental observation of toggle switching in Mn$_2$Ru$_x$Ga Heusler alloys, has contested this limit since Mn ions are of the same nature. To shed some light into this question, we present an atomis…
Molecular dynamics simulations of crack propagation are performed for two extreme cases of complex metallic alloys (CMAs): In a model quasicrystal the structure is determined by clusters of atoms, whereas the model C15 Laves phase is a simple periodic stacking of a unit cell. The simulations reveal that the basic building units of the structures also govern their fracture behaviour. Atoms in the Laves phase play a comparable role to the clusters in the quasicrystal. Although the latter are not rigid units, they have to be regarded as significant physical entities.
Grain boundary engineering via dopant segregation can dramatically change the properties of a material. For metallic systems, most current studies concerning interfacial segregation and subsequent transitions of grain boundary structure are limited to binary alloys, yet many important alloy systems contain more than one type of dopant. In this work, hybrid Monte Carlo/molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate the behavior of dopants at interfaces in two model ternary alloy systems: Cu-Zr-Ag and Al-Zr-Cu. Trends in boundary segregation are studied, as well as the propensity fo…
This paper compares two approaches for investigating the near-surface composition profile that results from surface segregation in the so-called Cantor alloy, an equi-molar alloy of CoCrFeMnNi. One approach consists of atomistic computer simulations by a combination of Monte Carlo, molecular dynamics and molecular statics techniques, and the other is a nearest neighbor analytical calculation performed in the regular solution approximation with a multilayer model, developed here for the first time for a N-component system and tested for the 5-component Cantor alloy. This type of comparison is u…
The interaction between edge basal dislocations and $β$-Mg$_{17}$Al$_{12}$ precipitates was studied using atomistic simulations. A strategy was developed to insert a lozenge-shaped Mg$_{17}$Al$_{12}$ precipitate with Burgers orientation relationship within the Mg matrix in an atomistic model ensuring that the matrix/precipitate interfaces were close to minimum energy configurations. It was found that the dislocation bypassed the precipitate by the formation of an Orowan loop, that entered the precipitate. Within the precipitate, the dislocation was not able to progress further until more dislo…
The interaction between edge dislocations and Guinier-Preston zones in an Al-Cu alloy was analyzed by means of atomistic simulations. The different thermodynamic functions that determine the features of these obstacles for the dislocation glide were computed using molecular statics, molecular dynamics and the nudged elastic band method. It was found that Guinier-Preston zones are sheared by dislocations and the rate at which dislocations overcome the precipitate is controlled by the activation energy, $ΔU$, in agreement with the postulates of the harmonic transition state theory. Moreover, the…
Half-Heusler(HH) alloys have shown promising thermoelectric properties in the medium and high temperature range. To harness these material properties for thermoelectric applications, it is important to realize electrical contacts with low electrical contact resistivity. However, little is known about the detailed structural and electronic properties of such contacts, and the expected values of contact resistivity. Here, we employ atomistic ab initio calculations to study electrical contacts in a subclass of HH alloys consisting of the compounds HfCoSb, HfZrCoSb, and HfZrNiSn. By using Ag as a …
Nanoindentation is a powerful tool capable of providing fundamental insights of material elastic and plastic response at the nanoscale. Alloys at nanoscale are particularly interesting as the local heterogeneity and deformation mechanism revealed by atomistic study offers a better way to understand hardening mechanism to build a stronger material. In this work, nanoindentation in Al-Cu alloys are studied using atomistic simulations to investigate the effects of loading direction, alloying percentages of Cu via dislocation-driven mechanisms. Also, a low-fidelity finite element (FE) model has be…
The interaction between Mg edge basal dislocations and rod-shaped $β_1'$-MgZn$_2$ precipitates was studied by atomistic simulations using a new interatomic potential. The atomistic model was carefully built taking into account the experimental information about the orientation relationship between the matrix and the precipitate to ensure minimum energy interfaces. It was found that the dislocations initially overcame the precipitate by the formation of an Orowan loop that penetrated in the precipitate. The precipitate was finally sheared after several Orowan loops were piled-up. The number of …
Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to provide a detailed understanding of the functional degradation of shape memory alloys at small scale. The origin of the experimentally reported accumulation of plastic deformation and the anomalous sudden increase of the residual strain under cyclic mechanical loading are explained by detailed insights into the relevant atomic scale processes. Our work reveals that the mechanical response of shape-memory-alloy pillars under cyclic compression is significantly influenced by the presence of an amorphous-like surface region as experimentally induced…
Ductile failure is studied in a bcc HfNbTaZr High Entropy Alloy (HEA) with a pre-existing void. Using molecular dynamics simulations of uniaxial tensile tests, we explore the effect of void radius on the elastic modulus and yield stress. The elastic modulus scales with porosity as in closed-cell foams. The critical stress for dislocation nucleation as a function of the void radius is very well described by a model designed after pure bcc metals, taking into account a larger core radius for the HEA. Twinning takes place as a complementary deformation mechanism, and some detwinning occurs at lar…
Short-range order (SRO) in Fe-rich Fe-Cr alloys is investigated by means of atomistic off-lattice Monte Carlo simulations in the semi-grand canonical ensemble using classical interatomic potentials. The SRO parameter defined by Cowley [Phys. Rev. B 77, 669 (1950)] is used to quantify the degree of ordering. In agreement with experiments a strong ordering tendency in the Cr distribution at low Cr concentrations (~< 5%) is observed, as manifested in negative values of the SRO parameters. For intermediate Cr concentrations (5% ~< c_Cr ~< 15%) the SRO parameter for the alpha-phase goes through a m…
Solute clusters in long period stacking order (LPSO) alloys play a key role in their idiosyncratic plastic behavior, for example kink formation and kink strengthening. Identifying atomistic details of cluster structures is a prerequisite for atomistic modeling of LPSO alloys and is crucial for improving their strength and ductility; however, there is much uncertainty regarding interstitial atoms in the cluster. Although density functional theory calculations have shown that the inclusion of Mg interstitial atoms is energetically most favorable in majority of LPSO alloys, solute elements have a…
Some issues that arise when modeling elastic energy for binary alloys are discussed within the context of a Keating model and density functional calculations. The Keating model is based on atomistic modeling of elastic interactions in binary alloy using harmonic springs with species dependent equilibrium lengths. It is demonstrated that the continuum limit for the strain field are the usual equations of linear elasticity for alloys and that they correctly capture the coarse-grained displacement field. In addition, it is established that Euler-Lagrange equation of the continuum limit of the ela…
An extended atomistic spin model allowing for studies of the finite temperature magnetic properties of alloys is proposed. The model is obtained by extending the Heisenberg Hamiltonian via a parameterization from a first principles basis, interpolating from both the low temperature ferromagnetic and the high temperature paramagnetic reference states. This allows us to treat magnetic systems with varying degree of itinerant character within the model. Satisfactory agreement with both previous theoretical studies and experiments are obtained in terms of Curie temperatures and paramagnetic proper…
High entropy alloys (HEAs) are a class of novel materials that exhibit superb engineering properties. It has been demonstrated by extensive experiments and first principles/atomistic simulations that short-range order in the atomic level randomness strongly influences the properties of HEAs. In this paper, we derive stochastic continuum models for HEAs with short-range order from atomistic models. A proper continuum limit is obtained such that the mean and variance of the atomic level randomness together with the short-range order described by a characteristic length are kept in the process fr…
In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to investigate elementary dislocation properties in a Co-free high entropy (HEA) model alloy ($Cr_{15}Fe_{46}Mn_{17}Ni_{22}$ at. %) in comparison with a model alloy representative of Austenitic Stainless Steel (ASS) ($Cr_{20}Fe_{70}Ni_{10}$ at. %). Recently developed embedded-atom method (EAM) potentials were used to describe the atomic interactions in the alloys. Molecular Statics (MS) calculations were used to study the dislocation properties in terms of local stacking fault energy (SFE), dissociation distance while MD was used to i…
Dislocation velocities and mobilities are studied by Molecular Dynamics simulations for edge and screw dislocations in pure aluminum and nickel, and edge dislocations in Al-2.5%Mg and Al-5.0%Mg random substitutional alloys using EAM potentials. In the pure materials, the velocities of all dislocations are close to linear with the ratio of (applied stress)/(temperature) at low velocities, consistent with phonon drag models and quantitative agreement with experiment is obtained for the mobility in Al. At higher velocities, different behavior is observed. The edge dislocation velocity remains dep…
Atomistic simulations can provide useful insights into the physical properties of multi-principal-element alloys. However, classical potentials mostly fail to capture key quantum (electronic-structure) effects. We present a deep 3D convolutional neural network (3D CNN) based framework combined with a voxelization technique to design interatomic potentials for chemically complex alloys. We highlight the performance of the 3D CNN model and its efficacy in computing potentials using the medium-entropy alloy TaNbMo. In order to provide insights into the effect of voxel resolution, we implemented t…
A series of III-V ternary and quarternary digital alloy avalanche photodiodes (APDs) have recently been seen to exhibit very low excess noise. Using band inversion of an environment-dependent atomistic tight binding description of short period superlattices, we argue that a combination of increased effective mass, minigaps and band split-off are primarily responsible for the observed superior performance. These properties significantly limit the ionization rate of one carrier type, either holes or electrons, making the avalanche multiplication process unipolar in nature. The unipolar behavior …
Exploring the impact of Ti/Al on L12 nanoprecipitation and deformation behavior in CoNiFeAlTi multi-principal element alloys through atomistic simulations
Although the equilibrium composition of many alloy surfaces is well understood, the rate of transient surface segregation during annealing is not known, despite its crucial effect on alloy corrosion and catalytic reactions occurring on overlapping timescales. In this work, CuNi bimetallic alloys representing (100) surface facets are annealed in vacuum using atomistic simulations to observe the effect of vacancy diffusion on surface separation. We employ multi-timescale methods to sample the early transient, intermediate, and equilibrium states of slab surfaces during the separation process, in…

Current development of such material systems are hindered by expensive experiments and computationally demanding first-principles simulations. Atomistic simulations can provide reasonable insights on properties in such material systems. However, the issue of designing robust potentials still exists. High-entropy alloys (HEAs) with multiple constituent elements have been extensively studied in the past 20 years due to their promising engineering application. Previous experimental and computational studies of HEAs focused mainly on equiatomic or near equiatomic HEAs. However, there is probably far more treasure in those non-equiatomic HEAs with carefully designed composition. In this study, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation combined with machine learning (ML) methods were used to predict the mechanical properties of non-equiatomic CuFeNiCrCo HEAs. A database was established based on a tens…
The influence of pre-strain and temperature on the superior properties exhibited by an Nb nanowire embedded in a NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) are investigated via molecular dynamics simulations. To this end, a new Nb-Ni-Ti ternary interatomic potential based on the second nearest-neighbor modified embedded-atom method (2NN MEAM) is developed and employed. The origin of the unique phenomena of quasi-linear elasticity, slim hysteresis, and reduction in Young's modulus observed for pre-strained nanowire-SMA composites is uncovered. The results demonstrate the importance of plastic deformation in…
Combining first-principles accuracy and empirical-potential efficiency for the description of the potential energy surface (PES) is the philosopher's stone for unraveling the nature of matter via atomistic simulation. This has been particularly challenging for multi-component alloy systems due to the complex and non-linear nature of the associated PES. In this work, we develop an accurate PES model for the Al-Cu-Mg system by employing Deep Potential (DP), a neural network based representation of the PES, and DP Generator (DP-GEN), a concurrent-learning scheme that generates a compact set of ab…

By using a multiscale approach based on first-principles density functional theory combined with atomistic spin dynamics, we investigate the electronic structure and magnetization dynamics of an inverse Heusler and a Heusler compound and their alloys, i. e. Mn$_{2-x}Z_x$CoAl and Mn$_{2-x}Z_x$VAl, where $Z$ = Mo, W, Os and Ru, respectively. A signature of the ferrimagnetic ordering of Mn$_{2}$CoAl and Mn$_{2}$VAl Heusler alloys is reflected in the calculated Heisenberg exchange constants. They decay very rapidly with the interatomic distance and have short range, which is a consequence of the e…
We present an extension of the semi-grandcanonical (SGC) ensemble that we refer to as the variance-constrained semi-grandcanonical (VC-SGC) ensemble. It allows for transmutation Monte Carlo simulations of multicomponent systems in multiphase regions of the phase diagram and lends itself to scalable simulations on massively parallel platforms. By combining transmutation moves with molecular dynamics steps structural relaxations and thermal vibrations in realistic alloys can be taken into account. In this way, we construct a robust and efficient simulation technique that is ideally suited for la…
We present a methodology for the investigation of dislocation energetics in segregated alloys based on Monte Carlo simulations which equilibrate the topology and composition of the dislocation core and its surroundings. An environment-dependent partitioning of the system total energy into atomic contributions allows us to link the atomistic picture to continuum elasticity theory. The method is applied to extract core energies and radii of 60 degrees glide dislocations in segregated SiGe alloys which are inaccessible by other methods.

Therefore, it is important to understand energetically preferred atomic structures of bimetallic nanoalloys. In this study, we performed a series of simulated annealing Monte Carlo simulations to predict the …
Compositional phase stability in medium-entropy and high-entropy Cantor-Wu alloys from an ab initio all-electron, Landau-type theory and atomistic modelling
Bismide semiconductor materials and heterostructures are considered a promising candidate for the design and implementation of photonic, thermoelectric, photovoltaic, and spintronic devices. This work presents a detailed theoretical study of the electronic and optical properties of strongly-coupled GaBi$_x$As$_{1-x}$/GaAs multiple quantum well (MQW) structures. Based on a systematic set of large-scale atomistic tight-binding calculations, our results reveal that the impact of atomic-scale fluctuations in alloy composition is stronger than the inter-well coupling effect, and plays an important …
