High-entropy alloys (HEAs) with multiple constituent elements have been extensively studied in the past 20 years due to their promising engineering application. Previous experimental and computational studies of HEAs focused mainly on equiatomic or near equiatomic HEAs. However, there is probably far more treasure in those non-equiatomic HEAs with carefully designed composition. In this study, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation combined with machine learning (ML) methods were used to predict the mechanical properties of non-equiatomic CuFeNiCrCo HEAs. A database was established based on a tensile test of 900 HEA single-crystal samples by MD simulation. We investigated and compared eight ML models for the learning tasks, ranging from shallow models to deep models. It was found that the kernel-based extreme learning machine (KELM) model outperformed others for the prediction of yield stress and Young's modulus. The accuracy of the KELM model was further verified by the large-sized polycrystal HEA samples.
Electronic, structural and thermodynamic properties of the equiatomic alloy TiZr are calculated within the electron density functional theory and the Debye-Gruneisen model. The calculated values of the lattice parameters a and c/a agree well with the experimental data for the alpha, omega and beta phases. The omega phase is shown to be stable at atmospheric pressure and low temperatures; it remains energetically preferable up to T=600K. The alpha phase of the TiZr alloy becomes stable in the range 600K<T<900K, and the beta phase at temperatures above 900K. The constructed phase diagram qualita…
Plastic deformation mechanisms during nanoindentation of W, Mo, V body-centered cubic single crystals and their corresponding W-Mo, W-V equiatomic random solid solutions
The bulk quaternary equiatomic CoCrFeNi alloy is studied extensively in literature. Under experimental conditions, it shows a single-phase fcc structure and its physical and mechanical properties are similar to those of the quinary equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi alloy. Many studies in literature have focused on the mechanical properties of bulk nanocrystalline high entropy alloys or compositionally complex alloys, and their microstructure evolution upon annealing. The thin film processing route offers an excellent alternative to form nanocrystalline alloys. Due to the high nucleation rate and high dens…
In this work, we study the equiatomic quaternary Heusler Alloy CoFeCrP using two methods: DFT and Monte Carlo simulations. The DFT method allowed us to illustrate the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of this alloy. The ground state phase diagrams have been presented to show the stable configurations in different physical parameter planes. On the other hand, the Monte Carlo simulations, performed under the Metropolis algorithm, permitted to deduce the critical the behavior of the equiatomic quaternary Heusler alloy CoFeCrP. The structural properties results show that the phase of …
Half-metallic ferromagnetic (HMF) materials show high spin polarization and are therefore interesting to researchers due to their possible applications in spintronic devices. In these materials, while one spin sub band has a finite density of states at the Fermi level, the other sub band has a gap. Because of their high Curie temperature and tunable electronic structure, HMF Heusler alloys have a special importance among the HMF materials. Full Heusler alloys with the stoichiometric composition X2YZ (where X and Y are the transition metals and Z is a sp element) have the cubic structure with f…

Estimating the diffusion coefficients experimentally in a four-component inhomogeneous alloy following the conventional diffusion couple method by intersecting three couples at the same composition is difficult unless a small composition range of constant diffusivity is identified. Additionally, the intrinsic diffusion coefficients of the components cannot be estimated in a system with more than two components. To solve these issues, we have followed the pseudo-binary and pseudo-ternary diffusion couple methods for estimating the diffusion coefficients at the equiatomic composition of NiCoFeCr…
The influence of the phase and structural state on the low-temperature elastic properties of molybdenum-alloyed non-equiatomic high-entropy alloys of the Fe-Co-Ni-Cr system
We use high-throughput first-principles sampling to investigate competitive factors that determine the crystal structure of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and the energetics dependence of the stable phase on the atomic configuration of fully ordered L1$_2$, D0$_{22}$, and random solid solution (RSS) phases of equiatomic quaternary alloys comprising four of the six constituent elements (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu). Considering the configurational entropy, we demonstrate that valence electron concentration (VEC) and temperature are crucial to determine the phase stability of HEAs at finite temperatu…
MgO-barrier magnetic tunnel junctions with half-metallic Heusler alloy electrodes attracted much attentions for spintronics applications. However, a couples of issues related to materials still remain to be resolved for practical uses. Recently, quarterly equiatomic Heusler alloys attracted attentions as advanced Heusler alloys. CoIrMnZ (Z = Al, Si, Ga, and Ge) half-metallic Heusler alloys were designed and predicted to have moderate Curie temperatures and to be a lattice-matched with the MgO barrier, being advantageous to traditional Co2 Heusler alloys [T. Roy et al., J. Magn. Magn. Mater. 49…
First principles calculations are performed to investigate the thermodynamical stability, dynamical, mechanical, electronic and magnetic properties of CrTiCoZ (Z= Al/Si) novel quaternary Heusler alloys. Y-type III atomic configuration is found to be the most stable structure for both compounds. The melting temperatures of both compounds are as high as 2142 K and 2420 K for CrTiCoAl and CrTiCoSi, respectively. The electronic structure calculations using GGA-PBE approach show a half metallic behavior of CrTiCoAl. The spin-down channel exhibits a direct band gap of 0.15 eV, whereas the spin-up ch…
Future spintronics requires the realization of thin film of half-metallic ferromagnets having high Curie temperature and 100\% spin polarization at the Fermi level for potential spintronics applications. In this paper, we report the epitaxial thin films growth of half-metallic CoFeMnGe Heusler alloy on MgO (001) substrate using pulsed laser deposition system, along with the study of structural, magnetic and transport properties. The magnetic property measurements of the thin film suggest a soft ferromagnetic state at room temperature with an in-plane magnetic anisotropy and a Curie temperature…

In this work, we present structural, electronic, magnetic, mechanical and transport properties of equiatomic quaternary Heusler alloy, CoRhMnGe using both theoretical and experimental techniques. A detailed structural analysis is performed using X-ray diffraction(XRD) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure(EXAFS) spectroscopy. The alloy is found to crystallize in Y-type structure having space group $F\bar{4}3m$ (\# 216). The ab-initio simulation pedict half-metallic ferromagnetic characteristics leading to large spin polarization. The calculated magnetization is found to be in fair agree…
In this paper, we investigate CoFeCrAl alloy by means of various experimental techniques and ab-initio calculations to look for half-metallic nature. The alloy is found to exist in the cubic Heusler structure, with presence of B2 ordering. Saturation magnetization (MS) value of about 2 Bohr magneton/f.u. is observed at 8 K under ambient pressure, which is in good agreement with the Slater-Pauling rule. MS values are found to be independent of pressure, which is a prerequisite for half-metals. The ab-initio electronic structure calculations predict half-metallic nature for the alloy with a spin…
The superior properties of high-entropy multi-functional materials are strongly connected with their atomic heterogeneity through many different local atomic interactions. The detailed element-specific studies on a local scale can provide insight into the primary arrangements of atoms in multicomponent systems and benefit to unravel the role of individual components in certain macroscopic properties of complex compounds. Herein, multi-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy combined with reverse Monte Carlo simulations was used to explore a homogeneity of the local crystallographic ordering and spe…
We have carried out plastic deformation experiments on single-phase samples of the body centered ZrNbTiVHf high-entropy alloy between room temperature and 1150 K. The experiments were carried out on polycrystalline samples with two different grain sizes, in compression at a true constant strain rate of 10-4 1/s. Incremental tests such as stress-relaxation tests, strain-rate changes and temperature changes were carried out in order to determine thermodynamic activation parameters of the plastic deformation process. The material displays a yield-stress anomaly in the temperature range between ab…
The equiatomic quaternary Heusler alloy CoFeCrAl is a candidate material for spin-gapless semiconductors (SGSs). However, to date, there have been no experimental attempts at fabricating a junction device. This paper reports a fully epitaxial (001)-oriented MgO barrier magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) with CoFeCrAl electrodes grown on a Cr buffer. X-ray and electron diffraction measurements show that the (001) CoFeCrAl electrode films with atomically flat surfaces have a $B2$-ordered phase. The saturation magnetization is 380 emu/cm$^3$, almost the same as the value given by the Slater--Pauling-…
Magnetic, specific heat, and structural properties of the equiatomic Cantor alloy system are reported for temperatures between 5 kelvin and 300 kelvin, and up to fields of 70 kilo-oersted. Magnetization measurements performed on as-cast, annealed, and cold-worked samples reveal a strong processing history dependence and that high-temperature annealing after cold-working does not restore the alloy to a pristine state. Measurements on known precipitates show that the two transitions, detected at 43 kelvin and 85 kelvin, are intrinsic to the Cantor alloy and not the result of an impurity phase. E…
In this report, structural, electronic, magnetic and transport properties of quaternary Heusler alloys CoRuMnGe and CoRuVZ (Z = Al, Ga) are investigated. All the three alloys are found to crystallize in cubic structure. CoRuMnGe exhibits L2$_1$ structure whereas, the other two alloys have B2-type disorder. For CoRuMnGe and CoRuVGa, the experimental magnetic moments are in close agreement with the theory as well as those predicted by the Slater-Pauling rule, while for CoRuVAl, a relatively large deviation is seen. The reduction in the moment in case of CoRuVAl possibly arises due to the anti-si…
Chemical short-range order (CSRO) is believed to be a key contributor to the exceptional properties of multicomponent alloys. However, direct validation and confirmation of CSRO has been highly elusive in most compounds. Recent studies for equiatomic NiCoCr alloys have shown that thermal treatments (i.e., annealing/aging) may facilitate and manipulate CSRO. In this work, by using molecular simulations, we show that nanomechanical probes, such as nanoindentation, may be utilized towards further manipulation of CSRO, providing explicit validation pathways. By using well established interatomic p…

XX'YZ equiatomic quaternary Heusler alloys (EQHA's) containing Cr, Al, and select Group IVB elements ($\textit{M}$ = Ti, Zr, Hf) and Group VB elements ($\textit{N}$ = V, Nb, Ta) were studied using state-of-the-art density functional theory to determine their effectiveness in spintronic applications. Each alloy is classified based on their spin-dependent electronic structure as a half-metal, a spin gapless semiconductor, or a spin filter material. We predict several new fully-compensated ferrimagnetic spin filter materials with small electronic gaps and large exchange splitting allowing for rob…
Tracer diffusion of all constituting elements is studied at various temperatures in a series of (CoCrFeMn)$_{100-x}$Ni$_x$ alloys with compositions ranging from pure Ni to the equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy. At a given homologous temperature, the measured tracer diffusion coefficients change non-monotonically along the transition from pure Ni to the concentrated alloys and finally to the equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi alloy. This is explained by atomistic Monte-Carlo simulations based on a modified embedded-atom potentials, which reveal that local heterogeneities of the atomic configurations …
Spin gapless semiconductors (SGS) form a new class of magnetic semiconductors, which has a band gap for one spin sub band and zero band gap for the other, and thus are useful for tunable spin transport based applications. In this paper, we report the first experimental evidence for spin gapless semiconducting behavior in CoFeMnSi Heusler alloy. Such a behavior is also confirmed by first principles band structure calculations. The most stable configuration obtained by the theoretical calculation is verified by experiment. The alloy is found to crystallize in the cubic Heusler structure (LiMgPdS…
Nickel-based superalloys and near-equiatomic high-entropy alloys containing Molybdenum are known for higher temperature strength and corrosion resistance. Yet, complex solid-solution alloys offer a huge design space to tune for optimal properties at slightly reduced entropy. For refractory Mo-W-Ta-Ti-Zr, we showcase KKR electronic-structure methods via the coherent-potential approximation to identify alloys over 5-dimensional design space with improved mechanical properties and necessary global (formation enthalpy) and local (short-range order) stability. Deformation is modeled with classical …
An extended atomistic spin model allowing for studies of the finite temperature magnetic properties of alloys is proposed. The model is obtained by extending the Heisenberg Hamiltonian via a parameterization from a first principles basis, interpolating from both the low temperature ferromagnetic and the high temperature paramagnetic reference states. This allows us to treat magnetic systems with varying degree of itinerant character within the model. Satisfactory agreement with both previous theoretical studies and experiments are obtained in terms of Curie temperatures and paramagnetic proper…

We report on the discovery of a high-entropy alloy with a hexagonal crystal structure. Equiatomic samples in the alloy system Ho-Dy-Y-Gd-Tb were found to solidify as homogeneous single-phase high-entropy alloys. The results of our electron diffraction investigations and high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy are consistent with a Mg-type hexagonal structure. The possibility of hexagonal high-entropy alloys in other alloy systems is discussed.
Atomistic simulations were carried out to analyze the interaction between $< a>$ basal dislocations and precipitates in Mg-Al alloys and the associated strengthening mechanisms.
Tuning the spin dynamics and magnetic phase transitions of the Cantor alloy via composition and sample processing protocols: A muon spin relaxation study
We report on the production and characterization of a high-entropy alloy in the refractory Zr-Nb-Ti-V-Hf system. Equiatomic ingots were produced by arc and levitation melting, and were subsequently homogenized by high-temperature annealing. We obtained a coarse-grained, single-phase high-entropy alloy, with a homogeneous distribution of the constituting elements. The phase is a chemically disordered solid solution, based on a bcc lattice with a lattice parameter of 0.336(5) nm.
The influence of pre-strain and temperature on the superior properties exhibited by an Nb nanowire embedded in a NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) are investigated via molecular dynamics simulations. To this end, a new Nb-Ni-Ti ternary interatomic potential based on the second nearest-neighbor modified embedded-atom method (2NN MEAM) is developed and employed. The origin of the unique phenomena of quasi-linear elasticity, slim hysteresis, and reduction in Young's modulus observed for pre-strained nanowire-SMA composites is uncovered. The results demonstrate the importance of plastic deformation in…
Compositional phase stability in medium-entropy and high-entropy Cantor-Wu alloys from an ab initio all-electron, Landau-type theory and atomistic modelling
In this communication,we propose a sustainable way to produce high entropy alloys from alloy scraps called Alloy mixing. We successfully demonstrate this method using a near equimolar CrCuFeMnNi HEA. Alloy scraps (304L stainless steel, Nichrome 80 and electrical wire grade Copper) obtained from various sources were melted together using vacuum arc melting along with minor additions of Mn and Cr to achieve the equiatomic composition. The alloy was characterized using X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy, which confirmed that the alloy produced through Alloy mixing exhibits a m…
Solute clusters affect the physical properties of alloys. Knowledge of the atomic structure of solute clusters is a prerequisite for material optimisation. In this study, solute clusters in a rapid-hardening Al-Cu-Mg alloy were characterised by a combination of atom probe tomography and density functional theory, making use of a hybrid data type that combines lattice rectification and data completion to directly input experimental data into atomistic simulations. The clusters input to the atomistic simulations are thus observed experimentally, reducing the number of possible configurations. Ou…
Mg grain boundary (GB) segregation and GB diffusion can impact the processing and properties of Al-Mg alloys. Yet, Mg GB diffusion in Al has not been measured experimentally or predicted by simulations. We apply atomistic computer simulations to predict the amount and the free energy of Mg GB segregation, and the impact of segregation on GB diffusion of both alloy components. At low temperatures, Mg atoms segregated to a tilt GB form clusters with highly anisotropic shapes. Mg diffuses in Al GBs slower than Al itself, and both components diffuse slowly in comparison with Al GB self-diffusion. …
The aging of a nanocrystalline equiatomic ZnSe alloy produced by mechanical alloying was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques. The measured XRD patterns showed that Se atoms located at interfacial component migrated with aging giving raise to a crystalline selenium (c-Se) phase. DSC spectra of heat-treated samples at temperatures above 221oC followed by quenching showed that the c-Se particles changed to the amorphous state. It was also observed that the as-milled and aged samples are highly hydrophilic. The lattice parameters and th…
In this work, a multiscale approach based on phase field was developed to simulate the microstructure's evolution under irradiation in binary systems, from atomic to microstructural scale. For that purpose, an efficient numerical scheme was developed. In the case of AgCu alloy under Krypton ions irradiation, phenomenological parameters were computed using atomistic methods, as a function of the temperature and the irradiation flux. As a result, we predicted the influence of the irradiation flux and the temperature on the formation of patterned microstructures. In the case of AgCu, our model wa…
We present a first-principles atomistic thermodynamics framework to describe the structure, composition and segregation profile of an alloy surface in contact with a (reactive) environment. The method is illustrated with the application to a Ag3Pd(111) surface in an oxygen atmosphere, and we analyze trends in segregation, adsorption and surface free energies. We observe a wide range of oxygen adsorption energies on the various alloy surface configurations, including binding that is stronger than on a Pd(111) surface and weaker than that on a Ag(111) surface. This and the consideration of even …
We have grown a single crystal of the equiatomic FeCoCrMnAl high-entropy alloy. The crystal was grown by means of the Bridgman technique and is about 1 cm in diameter and 6.6 cm in length. X-ray Laue images taken at various positions on the surface are sharp and mutually consistent, reflecting its single-crystal nature. We thus report on the first successful growth of a single crystal of a high-entropy alloy with a volume of the order of cubic centimeters. The material has a microstructure consisting of B2 inclusions in a body-centered cubic matrix on the 10 nm length scale.

The need for advanced materials has led to the development of complex, multi-component alloys or solid-solution alloys. These materials have shown exceptional properties like strength, toughness, ductility, electrical and electronic properties. Current development of such material systems are hindered by expensive experiments and computationally demanding first-principles simulations. Atomistic simulations can provide reasonable insights on properties in such material systems. However, the issue of designing robust potentials still exists. In this paper, we explore a deep convolutional neural-…
We present an extension of the semi-grandcanonical (SGC) ensemble that we refer to as the variance-constrained semi-grandcanonical (VC-SGC) ensemble. It allows for transmutation Monte Carlo simulations of multicomponent systems in multiphase regions of the phase diagram and lends itself to scalable simulations on massively parallel platforms. By combining transmutation moves with molecular dynamics steps structural relaxations and thermal vibrations in realistic alloys can be taken into account. In this way, we construct a robust and efficient simulation technique that is ideally suited for la…
A scale bridging strategy based in molecular statics and molecular dynamics simulations in combination with transition state theory has been developed to determine the flow stress of Al-Cu alloy containing Guinier-Preston zones. The athermal contribution to the flow stress was determined from the Taylor model, while the thermal contribution was obtained from the obstacle strength and the free energy barrier. These two magnitudes were obtained by means of molecular statics and molecular dynamics simulations of the interaction of edge dislocations with Guinier-Preston zones in two different orie…
We have applied extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analyses and ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations to study the atomic structure of Ag-doped (up to 42%) Ge1Sb2Te4 alloys. Analysis of the models that are consistent with the EXAFS experiment reveals that the Ge environment is significantly modified by Ag doping whereas those of Sb and Te are barely affected (except for high Ag concentrations), and suggests that Ag prefers bonding with Te to Ge or Sb. Doping with Ag promotes the conversion of tetrahedral Ge sites to octahedral Ge sites and enhances the speed of crystall…
Single femtosecond pulse toggle switching of ferrimagnetic alloys is an essential building block for ultrafast spintronics. Very different element-specific demagnetization dynamics is believed to be a hard limit for switching in ferrimagnets. This suggests that ferrimagnets composed of two ions of different nature, such as rare earth transition metal alloys, are necessary for switching. However, experimental observation of toggle switching in Mn$_2$Ru$_x$Ga Heusler alloys, has contested this limit since Mn ions are of the same nature. To shed some light into this question, we present an atomis…
Molecular dynamics simulations of crack propagation are performed for two extreme cases of complex metallic alloys (CMAs): In a model quasicrystal the structure is determined by clusters of atoms, whereas the model C15 Laves phase is a simple periodic stacking of a unit cell. The simulations reveal that the basic building units of the structures also govern their fracture behaviour. Atoms in the Laves phase play a comparable role to the clusters in the quasicrystal. Although the latter are not rigid units, they have to be regarded as significant physical entities.
Short-range order and compositional phase stability in refractory high-entropy alloys via first principles theory and atomistic modelling: NbMoTa, NbMoTaW and VNbMoTaW
EXAFS analysis of pure elements, binary and ternary equiatomic refractory alloys within the Nb-Zr-Ti-Hf-Ta system is performed at the Nb and Zr K-edges to analyze the evolution of the chemical local environment and the lattice distortion. A good mixing of the elements is found at the atomic scale. For some compounds, a distribution of distances between the central atom and its neighbors suggests a distortion of the structure. Finally, analysis of the Debye-Waller parameters show some correlation with the lattice distortion parameter $δ^2$, and allows to quantify experimentally the static disor…
