The orientation fluctuations of the director of a liquid crystal(LC) are measured after a quench near the Fréedericksz transition, which is a second order transition driven by an electric field. We report experimental evidence that, because of the critical slowing down, the LC presents, after the quench, several properties of an aging system, such as power law scaling versus time of correlation and response functions. During this slow relaxation, a well defined effective temperature, much larger than the heat bath temperature, can be measured using the fluctuation dissipation relation.
We numerically investigate the stationary and non-equilibrium critical dynamics in three-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnets. Since the non-conserved staggered magnetization couples dynamically to the conserved magnetization density, we employ a hybrid simulation algorithm that combines reversible spin precession with relaxational Kawasaki spin exchange processes. We measure the dynamic critical exponent and identify a suitable intermediate time window to obtain the aging scaling exponents. Our results support an earlier renormalization group prediction: While the critical aging …
We employ Monte Carlo simulations to study the non-equilibrium relaxation of driven Ising lattice gases in two dimensions. Whereas the temporal scaling of the density auto-correlation function in the non-equilibrium steady state does not allow a precise measurement of the critical exponents, these can be accurately determined from the aging scaling of the two-time auto-correlations and the order parameter evolution following a quench to the critical point. We obtain excellent agreement with renormalization group predictions based on the standard Langevin representation of driven Ising lattice …
We discuss how to calculate non-equilibrium universal amplitude ratios in the functional renormalization group approach, extending its applicability. In particular, we focus on the critical relaxation of the Ising model with non-conserved dynamics (model A) and calculate the universal amplitude ratio associated with the fluctuation-dissipation ratio of the order parameter, considering a critical quench from a high-temperature initial condition. Our predictions turn out to be in good agreement with previous perturbative renormalization-group calculations and Monte Carlo simulations.
Nonequilibrium surface autocorrelation and autoresponse functions are studied numerically in semi-infinite critical systems in the dynamical scaling regime. Dynamical critical behaviour is examined for a nonconserved order parameter in semi-infinite two- and three-dimensional Ising models as well as in the Hilhorst-van Leeuwen model. The latter model permits a systematic study of surface aging phenomena, as the surface critical exponents change continuously as function of a model parameter. The scaling behaviour of surface two-time quantities is investigated and scaling functions are confronte…
We study the off-equilibrium response and correlation functions and the corresponding fluctuation-dissipation ratio for a purely dissipative relaxation of an O(N) symmetric vector model (Model A) below its upper critical dimension. The scaling behavior of these quantities is analyzed and the associated universal functions are determined at first order in epsilon expansion in the high-temperature phase and at criticality. A non trivial limit of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio is found in the aging regime.
We adapt the non-linear $σ$ model to study the nonequilibrium critical dynamics of O(n) symmetric ferromagnetic system. Using the renormalization group analysis in $d=2+ε$ dimensions we investigate the pure relaxation of the system starting from a completely ordered state. We find that the average magnetization obeys the long-time scaling behavior almost immediately after the system starts to evolve while the correlation and response functions demonstrate scaling behavior which is typical for aging phenomena. The corresponding fluctuation-dissipation ratio is computed to first order in $ε$ and…
The power spectrum of a stationary process may be calculated in terms of the autocorrelation function using the Wiener-Khinchin theorem. We here generalize the Wiener-Khinchin theorem for nonstationary processes and introduce a time-dependent power spectrum $\left\langle S_{t_m}(ω)\right\rangle$ where $t_m$ is the measurement time. For processes with an aging correlation function of the form $\left\langle I(t)I(t+τ)\right\rangle=t^Υϕ_{\rm EA}(τ/t)$, where $ϕ_{\rm EA}(x)$ is a nonanalytic function when $x$ is small, we find aging $1/f$ noise. Aging $1/f$ noise is characterized by five critical …
Models of many-species ecosystems, such as the Lotka-Volterra and replicator equations, suggest that these systems generically exhibit near-extinction processes, where population sizes go very close to zero for some time before rebounding, accompanied by a slowdown of the dynamics (aging). Here, we investigate the connection between near-extinction and aging by introducing an exactly solvable many-variable model, where the time derivative of each population size vanishes both at zero and some finite maximal size. We show that aging emerges generically when random interactions are taken between…
We study the off-equilibrium two-point critical response and correlation functions for the relaxational dynamics with a coupling to a conserved density (Model C) of the O(N) vector model. They are determined in an ε=4-d expansion for vanishing momentum. We briefly discuss their scaling behaviors and the associated scaling forms are determined up to first order in epsilon. The corresponding fluctuation-dissipation ratio has a non trivial large time limit in the aging regime and, up to one-loop order, it is the same as that of the Model A for the physically relevant case N=1. The comparison with…
We investigate the nonequilibrium behavior of the d-dimensional Ising model with purely dissipative dynamics during its critical relaxation from a magnetized initial configuration. The universal scaling forms of the two-time response and correlation functions of the magnetization are derived within the field-theoretical approach and the associated scaling functions and fluctuation-dissipation ratio are computed up to first order in the epsilon-expansion. Aging behavior is clearly displayed during the critical relaxation. These results are confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations of the two-dimensi…
We consider the out-of-equilibrium, purely relaxational dynamics of a weakly diluted Ising model in the aging regime at criticality. We derive at first order in a $\sqrtε$ expansion the two-time response and correlation functions for vanishing momenta. The long-time limit of the critical fluctuation-dissipation ratio is computed at the same order in perturbation theory.
Via Monte Carlo simulations we study nonequilibrium dynamics in the nearest-neighbor Ising model, following quenches to points inside the ordered region of the phase diagram. With the broad objective of quantifying the nonequilibrium universality classes corresponding to spatially correlated and uncorrelated initial configurations, in this paper we present results for the decay of the order-parameter autocorrelation function for quenches from the critical point. This autocorrelation is an important probe for the aging dynamics in far-from-equilibrium systems and typically exhibits power-law sc…
We utilize Langevin molecular dynamics simulations to study dynamical critical behavior of magnetic flux lines near the depinning transition in type-II superconductors subject to randomly distributed attractive point defects. We employ a coarse-grained elastic line Hamiltonian for the mutually repulsive vortices and purely relaxational kinetics. In order to infer the stationary-state critical exponents for the continuous non-equilibrium depinning transition at zero temperature T = 0 and at the critical driving current density j_c, we explore two-parameter scaling laws for the flux lines' gyrat…
We consider a non-equilibrium three-state model whose dynamics is Markovian and displays the same symmetry as the three-state Potts model, i.e., the transition rates are invariant under the permutation of the states. Unlike the Potts model, detailed balance is in general not satisfied. The aging and the stationary properties of the model defined on a square lattice are obtained by means of large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. We show that the phase diagram presents a critical line, belonging to the three-state Potts universality class, that ends at a point whose universality class is that of t…
The non-equilibrium dynamics of a system that is located in the vicinity of a quantum critical point is affected by the critical slowing down of order-parameter correlations with the potential for novel out-of-equilibrium universality. After a quantum quench, i.e. a sudden change of a parameter in the Hamiltonian such a system is expected to almost instantly fall out of equilibrium and undergo aging dynamics, i.e. dynamics that depends on the time passed since the quench. Investigating the quantum dynamics of a $N$-component $φ^{4}$-model coupled to an external bath, we determine this universa…
We study the non-equilibrium aging behavior of the gauge glass model in three dimensions at the critical temperature. We perform Monte Carlo simulations with a Metropolis update, and correlation and response functions are calculated for different waiting times. We obtain a multiplicative aging scaling of the correlation and response functions, calculating the aging exponent $b$ and the nonequilibrium autocorrelation decay exponent $λ_c/z_c$. We also analyze the fluctuation-dissipation relationship at the critical temperature, obtaining the critical fluctuation-dissipation ratio $X_\infty$. By …
In a recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 889 (1997) and cond-mat/9702054] we have demonstrated that the avalanches in the Bak-Sneppen model display aging behavior similar to glassy systems. Numerical results for temporal correlations show a broad distribution with two distinct regimes separated by a time scale which is related to the age of the avalanche. This dynamical breaking of time-translational invariance results in a new critical exponent, $r$. Here we present results for $r$ from extensive numerical simulations of self-organized critical models in $d=1$ and 2. We find $r_{d=1}=0.45\pm …
We study the dynamics of the critical two-dimensional fully-frustrated Ising model by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The dynamical exponent is estimated at equilibrium and is shown to be compatible with the value $z_c=2$. In a second step, the system is prepared in the paramagnetic phase and then quenched at its critical temperature $T_c=0$. Numerical evidences for the existence of logarithmic corrections in the aging regime are presented. These corrections may be related to the topological defects observed in other fully-frustrated models. The autocorrelation exponent is estimated to be $λ…
Pinning particles at random in supercooled liquids is a promising route to make substantial progress on the glass transition problem. Here we develop a mean-field theory by studying the equilibrium and non-equilibrium dynamics of the spherical p-spin model in presence of a fraction c of pinned spins. Our study shows the existence of two dynamic critical lines: one corresponding to usual Mode Coupling transitions and the other one to dynamic spinodal transitions. Quenches in the portion of the c - T phase diagram delimited by those two lines leads to aging. By extending our results to finite di…
The critical behavior of the gauge-glass and the XY spin-glass models in three dimensions is studied by analyzing their nonequilibrium aging dynamics. A new numerical method, which relies on the calculation of the two-time correlation and integrated response functions, is used to determine both the critical temperature and the nonequilibrium scaling exponents, both for spin and chiral degrees of freedom. First, the ferromagnetic XY model is studied to validate this nonequilibirum aging method (NAM), since for this nondisordered system we can compare with known results obtained with standard eq…
We numerically investigate the non-equilibrium critical dynamics in three-dimensional anisotropic antiferromagnets in the presence of an external magnetic field. The phase diagram of this system exhibits two critical lines that meet at a bicritical point. The non-conserved components of the staggered magnetization order parameter couple dynamically to the conserved component of the magnetization density along the direction of the external field. Employing a hybrid computational algorithm that combines reversible spin precession with relaxational Monte Carlo updates, we study the aging scaling …
We recall that, at both the intermittency transitions and at the Feigenbaum attractor in unimodal maps of non-linearity of order $ζ>1$, the dynamics rigorously obeys the Tsallis statistics. We account for the $q$-indices and the generalized Lyapunov coefficients $λ_{q}$ that characterize the universality classes of the pitchfork and tangent bifurcations. We identify the Mori singularities in the Lyapunov spectrum at the edge of chaos with the appearance of a special value for the entropic index $q$. The physical area of the Tsallis statistics is further probed by considering the dynamics near …
Non-Markovian dynamics pervades human activity and social networks and it induces memory effects and burstiness in a wide range of processes including inter-event time distributions, duration of interactions in temporal networks and human mobility. Here we propose a non-Markovian Majority-Vote model (NMMV) that introduces non-Markovian effects in the standard (Markovian) Majority-Vote model (SMV). The SMV model is one of the simplest two-state stochastic models for studying opinion dynamics, and displays a continuous order-disorder phase transition at a critical noise. In the NMMV model we ass…
We provide a direct experimental test of the Stokes-Einstein relation as a special case of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) in an aging colloidal glass. The use of combined active and passive microrheology allows us to independently measure both the correlation and response functions in this non-equilibrium situation. Contrary to previous reports, we find no deviations from the FDT over several decades in frequency (1 Hz-10 kHz) and for all aging times. In addition, we find two distinct viscoelastic contributions in the aging glass, including a nearly elastic response at low frequenci…
We study phase ordering on networks and we establish a relation between the exponent $a_χ$ of the aging part of the integrated autoresponse function $χ_{ag}$ and the topology of the underlying structures. We show that $a_χ>0$ in full generality on networks which are above the lower critical dimension $d_L$, i.e. where the corresponding statistical model has a phase transition at finite temperature. For discrete symmetry models on finite ramified structures with $T_c = 0$, which are at the lower critical dimension $d_L$, we show that $a_χ$ is expected to vanish. We provide numerical results for…
The relaxation dynamics of many disordered systems, such as structural glasses, proteins, granular materials or spin glasses, is not completely frozen even at very low temperatures. This residual motion leads to a change of the properties of the material, a process commonly called aging. Despite recent advances in the theoretical description of such aging processes, the microscopic mechanisms leading to the aging dynamics are still a matter of dispute. In this Letter we investigate the aging dynamics of a simple glass former by means of molecular dynamics computer simulation. Using the concept…
The connectivity of the potential energy landscape in supercooled atomic liquids is investigated through the calculation of the instantaneous normal modes spectrum and a detailed analysis of the unstable directions in configuration space. We confirm the hypothesis that the mode-coupling critical temperature is the $T$ at which the dynamics crosses over from free to activated exploration of configuration space. We also report the observed changes in the local connectivity of configuration space sampled during aging, following a temperature jump from a liquid to a glassy state.
We study the critical properties of a model of information spreading based on the SIS epidemic model. Spreading rates decay with time, as ruled by two parameters, $ε$ and $l$, that can be either constant or randomly distributed in the population. The spreading dynamics is developed on top of Erdös-Renyi networks. We present the mean-field analytical solution of the model in its simplest formulation, and Monte Carlo simulations are performed for the more heterogeneous cases. The outcomes show that the system undergoes a nonequilibrium phase transition whose critical point depends on the paramet…
We consider a simple model of a structural glass, represented by a lattice gas with kinetic constraints in contact with a particle reservoir. Quench below the glass transition is represented by the jump of the chemical potential above a threshold. After a quench, the density approaches the critical density-where the diffusion coefficient of the particles vanishes-following a power law in time. In this regime, the two-time self-correlation functions exhibit aging. The behavior of the model can be understood in terms of simple mean-field arguments.
We investigate the non-equilibrium two-time correlation and response functions and the associated fluctuation-dissipation ratio for the ferromagnetic Ising chain with Glauber dynamics. The scaling behavior of these quantities at low temperature and large times is studied in detail. This analysis encompasses the self-similar domain-growth (aging) regime, the spatial and temporal Porod regimes, and the convergence toward equilibrium. The fluctuation-dissipation ratio admits a non-trivial limit value $X_\infty=1/2$ at zero temperature, and more generally in the aging regime.
Following quenches of initial configurations having long range spatial correlations, prepared at the demixing critical point, to points inside the miscibility gap, we study aging phenomena in solid binary mixtures. Results on the decay of the two-time order-parameter autocorrelation functions, obtained from Monte Carlo simulations of the two-dimensional Ising model, with Kawasaki exchange kinetics, are analyzed via state-of-the art methods. The outcome is compared with that obtained for the ordering in uniaxial ferromagnets. For the latter, we have performed Monte Carlo simulations of the same…
The non-equilibrium dynamics of an isolated quantum system after a sudden quench to a dynamical critical point is expected to be characterized by scaling and universal exponents due to the absence of time scales. We explore these features for a quench of the parameters of a Hamiltonian with $O(N)$ symmetry, starting from a ground state in the disordered phase. In the limit of infinite $N$, the exponents and scaling forms of the relevant two-time correlation functions can be calculated exactly. Our analytical predictions are confirmed by the numerical solution of the corresponding equations. Mo…
The Chapter is devoted to reviewing the main features of aging in non disordered systems relaxing via domain growth, after an istantaneous temperature quench. Using the autocorrelation and autoresponse functions to gauge the deviation from equilibrium, an hierarchy of processes is obtained by changing the temperature of the quench and the space dimensionality. The special role of the lower critical dimensionality is highlighted. Basic properties like the separation of the time scales and the splitting of degrees of freedom into fast and slow variables are treated in detail, both in general ter…
Using molecular dynamics computer simulations we investigate the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a Lennard-Jones system after a quench from a high temperature to one below the glass transition temperature. By studying the radial distribution function we give evidence that during the aging the system is very close to the critical surface of mode-coupling theory. Furthermore we show that two-time correlation functions show a strong dependence on the waiting time since the quench and that their shape is very different from the one in equilibrium. By investigating the temperature and time dependenc…
Aging phenomena of short-range Ising spin glass models have been investigated using Monte Carlo simulations. It is found that in the low-temperature spin-glass phase the mean domain size exhibits a crossover from a power-law growth associated with the critical fluctuation at the transition temperature to slower growth inherent in the low-temperature phase. The temperature dependence of the growth law of the domain size can be almost explained by this crossover. We also find that the spin-autocorrelation function in the quasi-equilibrium regime follows the expected scaling behavior from the dro…
We investigate a model of cell division in which the length of telomeres within the cell regulate their proliferative potential. At each cell division the ends of linear chromosomes change and a cell becomes senescent when one or more of its telomeres become shorter than a critical length. In addition to this systematic shortening, exchange of telomere DNA between the two daughter cells can occur at each cell division. We map this telomere dynamics onto a biased branching diffusion process with an absorbing boundary condition whenever any telomere reaches the critical length. As the relative e…
This work is a contribution to the study of universality in out-of-equilibrium lattice models undergoing a second-order phase transition at equilibrium. The experimental protocol that we have chosen is the following: the system is prepared in its high-temperature phase and then quenched at the critical temperature $T_c$. We investigated by mean of Monte Carlo simulations two quantities that are believed to take universal values: the exponent $λ/z$ obtained from the decay of autocorrelation functions and the asymptotic value $X_\infty$ of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio $X(t,s)$. This protoco…
We present a comprehensive study of non-equilibrium phenomena in the low temperature phase of the Edwards-Anderson Gaussian spin glass in 3 and 4 spatial dimensions. Many effects can be understood in terms of a time dependent coherence length, $\ell_T$, such that length scales smaller that $\ell_T$ are equilibrated, whereas larger length scales are essentially frozen. The time and temperature dependence of $\ell_T$ is found to be compatible with critical power-law dynamical scaling for small times/high temperatures, crossing over to an activated logarithmic growth for longer times/lower temper…
We experimentally study magnetization aging in a thin-film NiO/Permalloy bilayer. Aging characteristics are nearly independent of temperature below the exchange bias blocking temperature, but rapidly vary above it. The dependence on the magnetic history qualitatively changes across this temperature. The observed behaviors are consistent with the spin glass transition at the exchange bias blocking temperature, with significant implications for magnetism and magnetoelectronic phenomena in antiferromagnet/ferromagnet bilayers.
We look at the properties of clusters of order parameter at critical points in thermal systems and consider their significance to statistical-mechanical ground rules. These properties have been previously obtained through the saddle-point approximation in a coarse-grained partition function. We examine both static and dynamical aspects of a single large cluster and indicate that these properties fall outside the canonical Boltzmann-Gibbs (BG) scheme. Specifically: 1) The faster than exponential growth with cluster size of the space-integrated order parameter suggests nonextensivity of the BG e…
We study numerically the two-dimensional Ising model with non-conserved dynamics quenched from an initial equilibrium state at the temperature $T_i\ge T_c$ to a final temperature $T_f$ below the critical one. By considering processes initiating both from a disordered state at infinite temperature $T_i=\infty$ and from the critical configurations at $T_i=T_c$ and spanning the range of final temperatures $T_f\in [0,T_c[$ we elucidate the role played by $T_i$ and $T_f$ on the aging properties and, in particular, on the behavior of the autocorrelation $C$ and of the integrated response function $χ…
We study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of the fully-frustrated XY model. At equilibrium, this model undergoes two phase transitions at two very close temperatures: a Kosterlitz-Thouless topological transition and a second-order phase transition between a paramagnetic phase and a low-temperature phase where the chiralities of the lattice plaquettes are anti-ferromagnetically ordered. We compute by Monte Carlo simulations two-time spin-spin and chirality-chirality autocorrelation and response functions. From the dynamics of the spin waves in the low temperature phase, we extract the temperatur…
At time $t$ after an initial quench, an aging system responds to a perturbation turned on at time $ t_{\rm w} < t$ in a way mainly depending on the number of intermittent energy fluctuations, so-called quakes, which fall within the observation interval $(t_{\rm w},t]$ [Sibani et al. Phys. Rev. B, 74, 224407 and Eur. J. of Physics B, 58,483-491, 2007]. The temporal distribution of the quakes implies a functional dependence of the average response on the ratio $t/t_{\rm w}$. Further insight is obtained imposing small temperature steps, so-called $T$-shifts. The average response as a function of …
