We study the non-equilibrium aging behavior of the gauge glass model in three dimensions at the critical temperature. We perform Monte Carlo simulations with a Metropolis update, and correlation and response functions are calculated for different waiting times. We obtain a multiplicative aging scaling of the correlation and response functions, calculating the aging exponent $b$ and the nonequilibrium autocorrelation decay exponent $λ_c/z_c$. We also analyze the fluctuation-dissipation relationship at the critical temperature, obtaining the critical fluctuation-dissipation ratio $X_\infty$. By comparing our results with the aging scaling reported previously for a model of interacting flux lines in the vortex glass regime, we found that the exponents for both models are very different.
Nonequilibrium dynamics of the $\pm J$ Ising, the {\it XY}, and the Heisenberg spin-glass models are investigated in three dimensions. A nonequilibrium dynamic exponent is calculated from the dynamic correlation length. The spin-glass dynamic exponent continuously depends on the temperature. There is no anomaly at the critical temperature as is recently reported by Katzgraber and Campbell. On the other hand, the chiral-glass dynamic exponent takes a constant value above the spin-glass transition temperature ($T_\mathrm{sg}$), and becomes temperature-dependent below $T_\mathrm{sg}$.The finite-t…
The non-equilibrium dynamics of the three-dimensional Edwards-Anderson spin-glass model with different bond distributions is investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulation. A numerical method is used to determine the critical temperature and the scaling exponents of the correlation and the integrated response functions. The results obtained agree with those calculated in equilibrium simulations and suggest that the universality class does not depend on the exact form of the bond distribution.
The real part of the time-dependent ac susceptibility of the short-range Ising spin glass in a transverse field has been investigated at very low temperatures. We have used the quantum linear response theory and domain coarsening ideas of quantum droplet scaling theory. It is found that after a temperature quench to a temperature which is less than the spin glass transition temperature the ac susceptibility decreases with time elapsed after the initial quench towards equilibrium approximately logarithmically. It is shown that the transverse field of "tunneling" has nonessential effect to a non…
We numerically study the three-dimensional Edwards-Anderson model with Gaussian couplings, focusing on the heterogeneities arising in its nonequilibrium dynamics. Results are analyzed in terms of the backbone picture, which links strong dynamical heterogeneities to spatial heterogeneities emerging from the correlation of local rigidity of the bond network. Different two-times quantities as the flipping time distribution and the correlation and response functions, are evaluated over the full system and over high- and low-rigidity regions. We find that the nonequilibrium dynamics of the model is…
We discuss the slow, nonequilibrium, dynamics of spin glasses in their glassy phase. We briefly review the present theoretical understanding of the spectacular phenomena observed in experiments and describe new numerical results obtained in the first large-scale simulation of the nonequilibrium dynamics of the three dimensional Heisenberg spin glass.
We employ Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the two-time density autocorrelation function for the two-dimensional Coulomb glass. We find that the nonequilibrium relaxation properties of this highly correlated disordered system can be described by a full aging scaling ansatz. The scaling exponents are non-universal, and depend on temperature and charge density.
Motivated by short-range Ising spin glasses, we review some rigorous results and their consequences for the relation between the number/nature of equilibrium pure states and nonequilibrium dynamics. Two of the consequences for spin glass dynamics following a deep quench to a temperature with broken spin flip symmetry are: (1) Almost all initial configurations lie on the boundary between the basins of attraction of multiple pure states. (2) Unless there are uncountably many pure states with almost all pairs having zero overlap, there can be no equilibration to a pure state as time goes to infin…
Dense assemblies of self-propelled particles undergo a nonequilibrium form of glassy dynamics. Physical intuition suggests that increasing departure from equilibrium due to active forces fluidifies a glassy system. We falsify this belief by devising a model of self-propelled particles where increasing departure from equilibrium can both enhance or depress glassy dynamics, depending on the chosen state point. We analyze a number of static and dynamic observables and suggest that the location of the nonequilibrium glass transition is primarily controlled by the evolution of two-point static dens…
We study the glassy dynamics taking place in dense assemblies of athermal active particles that are driven solely by a nonequilibrium self-propulsion mechanism. Active forces are modeled as an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck stochastic process, characterized by a persistence time and an effective temperature, and particles interact via a Lennard-Jones potential that yields well-studied glassy behavior in the Brownian limit, obtained as the persistence time vanishes. By increasing the persistence time, the system departs more strongly from thermal equilibrium and we provide a comprehensive numerical analysi…
The unifying feature of glass formers (such as polymers, supercooled liquids, colloids, granulars, spin glasses, superconductors, ...) is a sluggish dynamics at low temperatures. Indeed, their dynamics is so slow that thermal equilibrium is never reached in macroscopic samples: in analogy with living beings, glasses are said to age. Here, we show how to relate experimentally relevant quantities with the experimentally unreachable low-temperature equilibrium phase. We have performed a very accurate computation of the non-equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation ratio for the three-dimensional Edward…
The glass transition, extensively studied in dense fluids, polymers, or colloids, corresponds to a dramatic evolution of equilibrium transport coefficients upon a modest change of control parameter, like temperature or pressure. A similar phenomenology is found in many systems evolving far from equilibrium, such as driven granular media, active and living matter. While many theories compete to describe the glass transition at thermal equilibrium, very little is understood far from equilibrium. Here, we solve the dynamics of a specific, yet representative, class of glass models in the presence …
We present a direct experimental measurement of an effective temperature in a colloidal glass of Laponite, using a micrometric bead as a thermometer. The nonequilibrium fluctuation-dissipation relation, in the particular form of a modified Einstein relation, is investigated with diffusion and mobility measurements of the bead embedded in the glass. We observe an unusual non-monotonic behavior of the effective temperature : starting from the bath temperature, it is found to increase up to a maximum value, and then decreases back, as the system ages. We show that the observed deviation from the …
Maximally random jammed states of hard spheres are prototypical glasses. We study the small wavenumber $k$ behavior of the structure factor $S(k)$ of overcompressed million-sphere packings as a function of density up to the jammed state. We find both a precursor to the glassy jammed state evident long before the jamming density is reached and an associated growing length scale, extracted from the volume integral of the direct correlation function $c(r)$, which diverges at the "critical" jammed state. We also define a nonequilibrium index $X$ and use it to demonstrate that the packings studied …
We combine computer simulations and analytical theory to investigate the glassy dynamics in dense assemblies of athermal particles evolving under the sole influence of self-propulsion. The simulations reveal that when the persistence time of the self-propelled particles is increased, the local structure becomes more pronounced whereas the long-time dynamics first accelerates and then slows down. These seemingly contradictory evolutions are explained by constructing a nonequilibrium mode-coupling-like theory for interacting self-propelled particles. To predict the collective dynamics the theory…
We analyse the collective dynamics of self-propelled particles in the large density regime where passive particles undergo a kinetic arrest to an amorphous glassy state. We capture the competition between self-propulsion and crowding effects using a two-dimensional model of self-propelled hard disks, which we study using Monte-Carlo simulations. Although the activity drives the system far from equilibrium, self-propelled particles undergo a kinetic arrest, which we characterize in detail and compare with its equilibrium counterpart. In particular, the critical density for dynamic arrest contin…
The critical behavior of the gauge-glass and the XY spin-glass models in three dimensions is studied by analyzing their nonequilibrium aging dynamics. A new numerical method, which relies on the calculation of the two-time correlation and integrated response functions, is used to determine both the critical temperature and the nonequilibrium scaling exponents, both for spin and chiral degrees of freedom. First, the ferromagnetic XY model is studied to validate this nonequilibirum aging method (NAM), since for this nondisordered system we can compare with known results obtained with standard eq…
The predictions of a nonequilibrium schematic mode-coupling theory developed to describe the nonlinear rheology of soft glassy materials have been numerically challenged in a sheared binary Lennard-Jones mixture. The theory gives an excellent description of the stress/temperature `jamming phase diagram' of the system. In the present paper, we focus on the issue of an effective temperature Teff for the slow modes of the fluid, as defined from a generalized fluctuation-dissipation theorem. As predicted theoretically, many different observables are found to lead to the same value of Teff, suggest…
A quantitative theory is developed, which accounts for heating artifacts in three-pulse photon echo (3PE) experiments. The heat diffusion equation is solved and the average value of the temperature in the focal volume of the laser is determined as a function of the 3PE waiting time. This temperature is used in the framework of nonequilibrium spectral diffusion theory to calculate the effective homogeneous linewidth of an ensemble of probe molecules embedded in an amorphous host. The theory fits recently observed plateaus and bumps without introducing a gap in the distribution function of flip …
We review an scenario for the non-equilibrium dynamics of glassy systems that has been motivated by the exact solution of simple models. This approach allows one to set on firmer grounds well-known phenomenological theories. The old ideas of entropy crisis, fictive temperatures, free-volume... have clear definitions within these models. Aging effects in the glass phase are also captured. One of the salient features of the analytic solution, the breakdown of the fluctuation-dissipation relations, provides a definition of a bonafide {\it effective temperature} that is measurable by a thermometer…
The small wavenumber $k$ behavior of the structure factor $S(k)$ of overcompressed amorphous hard-sphere configurations was previously studied for a wide range of densities up to the maximally random jammed state, which can be viewed as a prototypical glassy state [A. Hopkins, F. H. Stillinger and S. Torquato, Phys. Rev. E, 86, 021505 (2012)]. It was found that a precursor to the glassy jammed state was evident long before the jamming density was reached as measured by a growing nonequilibrium length scale extracted from the volume integral of the direct correlation function $c(r)$, which beco…
This theory combines a thermodynamic approach with a dynamic one in order to describe glass transition. Glass transition is regarded as an inaccessible second order phase transition, which is interrupted because of premature critical slowing down, caused by the system's frustration. The frustration-induced vortices are present in the structure besides thermoactivated vortices, and prevent the development of the order parameter fluctuations, that leads to the critical slowing down the system kinetics at some temperature above the phase transition point.

We numerically compute the helicity modulus of the three-dimensional gauge glass by Monte Carlo simulations. Because the average free energy is independent of a twist angle, it is expected that the average helicity modulus, directly related to the superfluid density, vanishes when simulations are performed with periodic boundary conditions. This is not necessarily the case for the typical (median) value, which is nonzero, because the distribution of the helicity modulus among different disorder realizations is very asymmetric. We show that the data for the helicity modulus distribution are wel…
A formally exact set of equations is derived for the description of nonequilibrium phenomena in classical liquids and glasses. With the help of a non equilibrium projection operator formalism, the correlation functions and fluctuation propagators are expressed in terms of memory functions and time dependent collective frequencies. This formally exact set of equations is approximated by applying mode coupling approximations to the memory functions. The resulting set of equations for wavevector dependent correlation functions, fluctuation propagators and one-time structure factors $S_q(t)$ gener…
The field-cooled (FC) process on an Ising spin-glass model is investigated by a standard Monte Calro (MC) method on one hand, and the equilibrium magnetization of the same system is evaluated by the exchang MC method on the other hand. The two types of simulation reveal intriguing glassy (nonequilibrium) dynamic properties of the FC magnetization (FCM) of the system. Particularly, the FCM decrease is observed when the FC process is halted at a low temperater, although its value is smaller than the corresponding equilibrium value. We present a comprehensive interpretation of such peculiar pheno…
Apparent critical phenomena, typically indicated by growing correlation lengths and dynamical slowing-down, are ubiquitous in non-equilibrium systems such as supercooled liquids, amorphous solids, active matter and spin glasses. It is often challenging to determine if such observations are related to a true second-order phase transition as in the equilibrium case, or simply a crossover, and even more so to measure the associated critical exponents. Here, we show that the simulation results of a hard-sphere glass in three dimensions, are consistent with the recent theoretical prediction of a Ga…
We derive the exact internal energies and the rigorous upper bounds of specific heats for several spin glass models by applying the gauge theory to the Fortuin-Kasteleyn representation which is a representation based on a percolation picture for spin-spin correlation. The results are derived on the Nishimori lines which are special lines on the phase diagrams. As the spin glass models, the +-J Ising model and a Potts gauge glass model are studied. The present solutions agree with the previous solutions. The derivation of the solutions by the present method must be useful for understanding the …
Large-scale simulations on three-dimensional (3D) frustrated anisotropic XY model have been performed to study the nonequilibrium phase transitions of vortex matter in weak random pinning potential in layered superconductors. The first-order phase transition from the moving Bragg glass to the moving smectic is clarified, based on thermodynamic quantities. A washboard noise is observed in the moving Bragg glass in 3D simulations for the first time. It is found that the activation of the vortex loops play the dominant role in the dynamical melting at high drive.
We find a possibility of a weak universality of spin-glass phase transitions in three-dimensional $\pm J$ models. The Ising, the XY and the Heisenberg models seem to undergo finite-temperature phase transitions with a ratio of the critical exponents $γ/ν\sim 2.4$. Evaluated critical exponents may explain corresponding experimental results. The analyses are based upon nonequilibrium relaxation from a paramagnetic state and finite-time scaling.
The dynamic behaviour of glassy materials displays strong nonequilibrium effects, such as ageing in simple protocols, memory, rejuvenation and Kovacs effects in more elaborated experiments. We show that this phenomenology may be easily understood in the context of the nonequilibrium critical dynamics of non-disordered systems, the main ingredient being the existence of an infinite equilibrium correlation length. As an example, we analytically investigate the behaviour of the 2D XY model submitted to temperature protocols similar to experiments. This shows that typical glassy effects may be obt…
We study the applications of non-equilibrium relations such as the Jarzynski equality and fluctuation theorem to spin glasses with gauge symmetry. It is shown that the exponentiated free-energy difference appearing in the Jarzynski equality reduces to a simple analytic function written explicitly in terms of the initial and final temperatures if the temperature satisfies a certain condition related to gauge symmetry. This result is used to derive a lower bound on the work done during the non-equilibrium process of temperature change. We also prove identities relating equilibrium and non-equili…
We present a promising mode coupling theory study for the relaxation and glassy dynamics of a system of strongly interacting self-propelled particles, wherein the self-propulsion force is described by Ornstein-Uhlenbeck colored noise and thermal noises are included. Our starting point is an effective Smoluchowski equation governing the distribution function of particle's positions, from which we derive a memory function equation for the time dependence of density fluctuations in nonequilibrium steady states. With the basic assumption of absence of macroscopic currents and standard mode couplin…
Using computer simulations of an atomistic glass-forming liquid, we investigate the fluctuations of the overlap between a fluid configuration and a quenched reference system. We find that large fluctuations of the overlap develop as temperature decreases, consistent with the existence of the random critical point that is predicted by effective field theories. We discuss the scaling of fluctuations near the presumed critical point, comparing the observed behaviour with that of the random-field Ising model. We argue that this critical point directly reveals the existence of an interfacial tensio…
We investigate the temperature-disorder (T-S) phase diagram of a three-dimensional gauge glass model, which is a cubic-lattice nearest-neighbor XY model with quenched random phase shifts A_xy at the bonds, by numerical Monte Carlo simulations. We consider the uncorrelated phase-shift distribution P(A_xy)\sim \exp[(cos A_xy)/S], which has the pure XY model and the uniform distribution of random shifts as extreme cases at S=0 and S->infty respectively, and which gives rise to equal magnetic and overlap correlation functions when T=S. While the high-temperature phase is always paramagnetic, at lo…
We study the three-dimensional gauge glass model in the limit of strong screening by using a minimum cost flow algorithm, enabling us to obtain EXACT ground states for systems of linear size L<=48. By calculating the domain-wall energy, we obtain the stiffness exponent theta = -0.95+/-0.03, indicating the absence of a finite temperature phase transition, and the thermal exponent nu=1.05+/-0.03. We discuss the sensitivity of the ground state with respect to small perturbations of the disorder and determine the overlap length, which is characterized by the chaos exponent zeta=3.9+/-0.2, implying…
The concept of work is studied in quantum thermostatistics of a system surrounded by an environment and driven by an external force. It is found that there emerges the gauge theoretical structure in a nonequilibrium process, the field of which is referred to as the work gauge field. The thermodynamic work as the flux of the work gauge field is considered for a cyclic process in the space of the external-force parameters. As an example, the system of a spin-1/2 interacting with an external magnetic field is analyzed. This geometric effect may be observed, for example, in an NMR experiment and c…
It was pointed out by de Arcangelis et al. [Europhys. Lett. 14 (1991), 515] that the correct understanding of the percolation phenomenon of the Fortuin-Kasteleyn cluster in the Edwards-Anderson model is important since a dynamical transition, which is characterized by a parameter called the Hamming distance or damage, and the percolation transition are related to a transition for a signal propagating between spins. We show analytically the percolation thresholds of the Fortuin-Kasteleyn cluster for a Potts gauge glass model, which is an extended model of the Edwards-Anderson model, on random g…

We study numerically the nonequilibrium dynamics of the three-dimensional Heisenberg Edwards-Anderson spin glass submitted to protocols during which temperature is shifted or cycled within the spin glass phase. We show that (partial) rejuvenation and (perfect) memory effects can be numerically observed and study both effects in detail. We quantitatively characterize their dependences on parameters such as the amplitude of the temperature changes, the timescale at which the changes are performed, and the cooling rates used to vary the temperature. We contrast our results both to those found num…
Localisation-protected quantum order extends the idea of symmetry breaking and order in ground states to individual eigenstates at arbitrary energy. Examples include many-body localised static and $π$-spin glasses in Floquet systems. Such order is inherently dynamical and difficult to detect as the order parameter typically varies randomly between different eigenstates, requiring specific superpositions of eigenstates to be targeted by the initial state. We show that two-time correlators overcome this, reflecting the presence or absence of eigenstate order even in fully-mixed, $infinite$ $temp…
We investigate nonequilibrium temperatures in a two-state system driven to a nonequilibrium steady state by the action of an oscillatory field. The nonequilibrium temperature is determined by coupling a small cavity or probe to the nonequilibrium system and studying the fluctuating noise in the cavity, as has been proposed in the context of glassy systems. We show the presence of resonant effects in the nonequilibrium temperature and discuss the existence of a constitutive steady-state equation in such nonequilibrium conditions. We propose this simple model as an excellent system to carry out …
We show the link between U1 lattice gauge theories and the off-equilibrium thermodynamics of a large class of nonlinear oscillators networks. The coupling between the oscillators plays the role of a gauge field, or connection, on the network. The thermodynamical forces that drive energy flows are expressed in terms of the curvature of the connection, analogous to a geometric phase. The model, which holds both close and far from equilibrium, predicts the existence of persistent energy and particle currents circulating in close loops through the network. The predictions are confirmed by numerica…
We assume that markovian dynamics on a finite graph enjoys a gauge symmetry under local scalings of the probability density, derive the transformation law for the transition rates and interpret the thermodynamic force as a gauge potential. A widely accepted expression for the total entropy production of a system arises as the simplest gauge-invariant completion of the time derivative of Gibbs's entropy. We show that transition rates can be given a simple physical characterization in terms of locally-detailed-balanced heat reservoirs. It follows that Clausius's measure of irreversibility along …
An analytical approach, which develops the gauge model of the glass transition phenomenon, is suggested. It is based on the quantum field theory and critical dynamics methods. The suggested mechanism of glass transition is based on the interaction of the local magnetization field with the massive gauge field, which describes frustration-induced plastic deformation. The example of the three-dimensional Heisenberg model with trapped disorder is considered. It is shown that the glass transition appears when the fluctuations scale reaches the frustrations scale, and the mass of the gauge field bec…
We present results of Monte Carlo simulations of the gauge glass model in three dimensions using exchange Monte Carlo. We show for the first time clear evidence of the vortex glass ordered phase at finite temperature. Using finite size scaling we obtain estimates for the correlation length exponent, nu = 1.39 +/- 0.20, the correlation function exponent, eta = -0.47 +/- 0.07, and the dynamic exponent z = 4.2 +/- 0.6. Using our values for z and nu we calculate the resistivity exponent to be s = 4.5 +/- 1.1. Finally, we provide a plausible lower bound on the the zero-temperature stiffness exponen…
We consider a gauge theory of the glass transition in the frustrated XY model being simplest model containing topologically nontrivial excitations. We describe the transition kinetics and find that the three-dimensional system exhibits the Vogel-Fulcher-Tamman criticality heralding its freezing into a spin glass. We analytically show that the system demonstrates all glass transition properties, like the logarithmic relaxation, and corresponding behavior of linear and non-linear susceptibility. The mode-coupling theory equation in the Zwanziger-Mori representation also is derived in framework o…
Large-scale simulations have been performed on the current-driven two-dimensional XY gauge glass model with resistively-shunted-junction dynamics. It is observed that the linear resistivity at low temperatures tends to zero, providing strong evidence of glass transition at finite temperature. Dynamic scaling analysis demonstrates that perfect collapses of current-voltage data can be achieved with the glass transition temperature $T_{g}=0.22$, the correlation length critical exponent $ν=1.8$, and the dynamic critical exponent $ z=2.0$. A genuine continuous depinning transition is found at zero …
The finite-size scaling method in the equilibrium Monte Carlo(MC) simulations and the finite-time scaling method in the nonequilibrium-relaxation simulations are compromised. MC time data of various physical quantities are scaled by the MC time data of the dynamic correlation length, which corresponds to changing the system size in the finite-size scaling method. This scaling method is tested in the three-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising spin model and in the three dimensional $\pm J$ Ising spin-glass model. The transition temperature and the critical exponents, $η$ and $ν$, are obtained by the…
We investigate the low-temperature dynamics of a simple stochastic model, introduced recently in the context of the physics of glasses. The slowest characteristic time at equilibrium diverges exponentially at low temperature. On smaller time scales, the nonequilibrium dynamics of the system exhibits an aging regime. We present an analytical study of the scaling behaviour of the mean energy, of its local correlation and response functions, and of the associated fluctuation-dissipation ratio throughout the regime of low temperature and long times. This analysis includes the aging regime, the con…

In this paper the phenomenon of dynamic heterogeneity in supercooled liquid systems is considered in terms of the recently proposed gauge theory of glass transition. The physical interpretation of the dynamic scaling is considered. It is shown that the development of the dynamic heterogeneity occurs due to the growth areas in which molecular motion is correlated due to the elastic interaction described by the gauge field. We obtains the analytical expressions for the dependence of the number of dynamically correlated atoms as the function on the system relaxation time, and the time dependence …
"Ceci n'est pas une pipe" wrote René Magritte on what was only the representation of a pipe. Phenomena and their physical descriptions differ, and in particular the laws ruling the former might enjoy symmetries that have to be spent to attain the latter. So, inertial frames are necessary to draw numbers out of Newtonian mechanics and confront with experiment, but ultimately the laws of mechanics are independent of reference frames. Generalizing work done in Ref. [M. Polettini, EPL 97 (2012) 30003] to continuous systems, we discuss from a foundational point of view how subjectivity in the choic…
We use large-scale molecular dynamics simulations to study the kinetics of the liquid-gas phase separation if the temperature is lowered across the glass transition of the dense phase. We observe a gradual change from phase separated systems at high temperatures to nonequilibrium, gel-like structures that evolve very slowly at low temperatures. The microscopic mechanisms responsible for the coarsening strongly depend on temperature, and change from diffusive motion at high temperature to a strongly intermittent, heterogeneous and thermally activated dynamics at low temperature, leading to loga…
A new order parameter is constructed for SU(2) lattice gauge theory in the context of the two-real-replica method normally used for spin glasses. The order parameter is sensitive to a global Z2 subgroup of the gauge symmetry which is seen to break spontaneously at $β= 4/g^2 = 1.96\pm 0.01$. No gauge fixing is required. Finite size scaling is consistent with a high-order paramagnet to spin glass transition with a critical exponent $ν= 0.99 \pm 0.13$. The existence of this transition suggests a second transition from spin glass to ferromagnet should exist at higher $β$.
We study the long-time aging dynamics of spin-glass models with two-spin interactions by performing a Renormalization Group transformation on the time variable in the non-equilibrium dynamical generating functional. We obtain the RG equations and find that the flow converges to an exact fixed point. We show that this fixed point is invariant under reparametrizations of the time variable. This continuous symmetry is broken, as evidenced by the fact that the observed correlations and responses are not invariant under it. We argue that this gives rise to the presence of Goldstone modes, and that …
The nonequilibrium critical dynamics of the 2D XY model is investigated numerically through Monte Carlo simulations and analytically in the spin-wave approximation. We focus in particular on the behaviour of the two-time response and correlation functions and show that the ageing dynamics depends on the initial conditions. The presence of critical fluctuations leads to non-trivial violations of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem apparently reminiscent of the three dimensional Edwards-Anderson spin glass model. We compute for this reason the finite-size overlap probability distribution functio…
