The energy of a simple graph $G$ arising in chemical physics, denoted by $\mathcal E(G)$, is defined as the sum of the absolute values of eigenvalues of $G$. We consider the asymptotic energy per vertex (say asymptotic energy) for lattice systems. In general for a type of lattice in statistical physics, to compute the asymptotic energy with toroidal, cylindrical, Mobius-band, Klein-bottle, and free boundary conditions are different tasks with different hardness. In this paper, we show that if $\{G_n\}$ is a sequence of finite simple graphs with bounded average degree and $\{G_n'\}$ a sequence of spanning subgraphs of $\{G_n\}$ such that almost all vertices of $G_n$ and $G_n'$ have the same degrees, then $G_n$ and $G_n'$ have the same asymptotic energy. Thus, for each type of lattices with toroidal, cylindrical, Mobius-band, Klein-bottle, and free boundary conditions, we have the same asymptotic energy. As applications, we obtain the asymptotic formulae of energies per vertex of the triangular, $3^3.4^2$, and hexagonal lattices with toroidal, cylindrical, Mobius-band, Klein-bottle, and free boundary conditions simultaneously.
We show an asymptotic estimate for the number of labelled planar graphs on $n$ vertices. We also find limit laws for the number of edges, the number of connected components, and other parameters in random planar graphs.
We consider the problem of minimizing the number of triangles in a graph of given order and size and describe the asymptotic structure of extremal graphs. This is achieved by characterizing the set of flag algebra homomorphisms that minimize the triangle density.
We prove the existence of an upper bound on the asymptotic dimension of tree amalgamations of locally finite quasi-transitive connected graphs. This generalises a result of Dranishnikov for free products with amalgamation and a result of Tselekidis for HNN-extensions of groups to tree amalgamations of graphs. As a corollary, we obtain an upper bound on the asymptotic dimension of a multi-ended quasi-transitive locally finite graph based on any of their factorisations.
A strongly regular graph is called trivial if it or its complement is a union of disjoint cliques. We prove that every infinite family of nontrivial strongly regular graphs is quasi-random in the sense of Chung, Graham and Wilson.
The Small Subgraph Conditioning Method has been used to study the almost sure existence and the asymptotic distribution of the number of regular spanning subgraphs of various types in random \emph{d}-regular graphs. In this paper we use the method to determine the asymptotic distribution of the number of 3-star factors in random \emph{d}-regular graphs for $d \geq 4$
We consider the class of simple graphs with large algebraic connectivity (the second-smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix). For this class of graphs we determine the asymptotic behavior of the number of Eulerian orientations. In addition, we establish some new properties of the Laplacian matrix, as well as an estimate of a conditionality of matrices with the asymptotic diagonal predominance
In this paper we relate a fundamental parameter of a random graph, its degree sequence, to a simple model of nearly independent binomial random variables. This confirms a conjecture made in 1997. As a result, many interesting functions of the joint distribution of graph degrees, such as the distribution of the median degree, become amenable to estimation. Our result is established by proving an asymptotic formula conjectured in 1990 for the number of graphs with given degree sequence. In particular, this gives an asymptotic formula for the number of $d$-regular graphs for all $d$, as $n\to\inf…
We prove that the asymptotic entropy of large simple graphs, as a function of fixed edge and triangle densities, is nondifferentiable along a certain curve.
We find new upper bounds on the size of a minimum totally dominating set for random regular graphs and for regular graphs with large girth. These bounds are obtained through the analysis of a local algorithm using a method due to Hoppen and Wormald [Local algorithms, regular graphs of large girth, and random regular graphs. Combinatorica 38(3) (2018), 619-664].
We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of Eulerian circuits for graphs with strong mixing properties and with vertices having even degrees. The exact value is determined up to the multiplicative error $O(n^{-1/2+\varepsilon})$, where $n$ is the number of vertices
We enumerate rooted 2-connected and 3-connected surface maps with respect to vertices and edges. We also derive the bivariate version of the large face-width result for random 3-connected maps. These results are then used to derive asymptotic formulas for the number of labelled graphs of genus g (1-connected, 2-connected, and 3-connected graphs.)
We present a unified general method for the asymptotic study of graphs from the so-called "subcritical"$ $ graph classes, which include the classes of cacti graphs, outerplanar graphs, and series-parallel graphs. This general method works both in the labelled and unlabelled framework. The main results concern the asymptotic enumeration and the limit laws of properties of random graphs chosen from subcritical classes. We show that the number $g_n/n!$ (resp. $g_n$) of labelled (resp. unlabelled) graphs on $n$ vertices from a subcritical graph class ${G}=\cup_n {G_n}$ satisfies asymptotically the…

A split graph is a graph whose vertices can be partitioned into a clique and a stable set. We investigate the combinatorial species of split graphs, providing species-theoretic generalizations of enumerative results due to Bína and Přibil (2015), Cheng, Collins, and Trenk (2016), and Collins and Trenk (2018). In both the labeled and unlabeled cases, we give asymptotic results on the number of split graphs, of unbalanced split graphs, and of bicolored graphs, including proving the conjecture of Cheng, Collins, and Trenk (2016) that almost all split graphs are balanced.
We investigate size Ramsey numbers involving bipartite graphs. It is proved that, if each forbidden graph is fixed or grows with n (in a certain uniform manner), then the extremal function has a linear asymptotics. The corresponding slope can be obtained as the minimum of a certain mixed integer program. Applying the Farkas Lemma, we solve the MIP for complete bipartite graphs, in particular answering a question of Erdos, Faudree, Rousseau and Schelp (1978) who asked for the asymptotics of the size Ramsey number of (K_{s,n},K_{s,n}) for fixed s and large n.
In this paper we obtain precise asymptotics for certain families of graphs, namely circulant graphs and degenerating discrete tori. The asymptotics contain interesting constants from number theory among which some can be interpreted as corresponding values for continuous limiting objects. We answer one question formulated in a paper from Atajan, Yong and Inaba in [1] and formulate a conjecture in relation to the paper from Zhang, Yong and Golin [21]. A crucial ingredient in the proof is to use the matrix tree theorem and express the combinatorial laplacian determinant in terms of Bessel functi…
For any fixed integer $R \geq 2$ we characterise the typical structure of undirected graphs with vertices $1, ..., n$ and maximum degree $R$, as $n$ tends to infinity. The information is used to prove that such graphs satisfy a labelled limit law for first-order logic. If $R \geq 5$ then also an unlabelled limit law holds.
We determine an asymptotic formula for the number of labelled 2-connected (simple) graphs on $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, provided that $m-n\to\infty$ and $m=O(n\log n)$ as $n\to\infty$. This is the entire range of $m$ not covered by previous results. The proof involves determining properties of the core and kernel of random graphs with minimum degree at least 2. The case of 2-edge-connectedness is treated similarly. We also obtain formulae for the number of 2-connected graphs with given degree sequence for most (`typical') sequences. Our main result solves a problem of Wright from 1983.
Let ${\rm ex \,} {\mathcal B}$ be a minor-closed class of graphs with a set ${\mathcal B}$ of minimal excluded minors. We study (a) the asymptotic number of graphs without $k+1$ disjoint minors in ${\mathcal B}$ and (b) the properties of a uniformly random graph drawn from all such graphs on vertices $\{1,\dots,n\}$. We present new results in the case when ${\rm ex \,} {\mathcal B}$ contains arbitrarily large fans for a general (good enough) set of forbidden minors ${\mathcal B}$. A particular case where our results hold is ${\mathcal B} = \{K_4\}$. For any fixed $k = 1, 2, \dots$ we derive pr…
A connected planar cubic graph is called an $m$-barrel fullerene and denoted by $F(m,k)$, if it has the following structure: The first circle is an $m$-gon. Then $m$-gon is bounded by $m$ pentagons. After that we have additional k layers of hexagons. At the last circle $m$-pentagons connected to the second $m$-gon. In this paper we asymptotically count by two different methods the number of perfect matchings in $m$-barrel fullerene graphs, as the number of hexagonal layers is large, and show that the results are equal.
It is shown explicitly how self-similar graphs can be obtained as `blow-up' constructions of finite cell graphs $\hat C$. This yields a larger family of graphs than the graphs obtained by discretising continuous self-similar fractals. For a class of symmetrically self-similar graphs we study the simple random walk on a cell graph $\hat C$, starting in a vertex $v$ of the boundary of $\hat C$. It is proved that the expected number of returns to $v$ before hitting another vertex in the boundary coincides with the resistance scaling factor. Using techniques from complex rational iteration and sin…
We show that intersection graphs of compact convex sets in R^n of bounded aspect ratio have asymptotic dimension at most 2n+1. More generally, we show this is the case for intersection graphs of systems of subsets of any metric space of Assouad-Nagata dimension n that satisfy the following condition: For each r,s>0 and every point p, the number of pairwise-disjoint elements of diameter at least s in the system that are at distance at most r from p is bounded by a function of r/s.
A set of geometric graphs is {\em geometric-packable} if it can be asymptotically packed into every sequence of drawings of the complete graph $K_n$. For example, the set of geometric triangles is geometric-packable due to the existence of Steiner Triple Systems. When $G$ is the $4$-cycle (or $4$-cycle with a chord), we show that the set of plane drawings of $G$ is geometric-packable. In contrast, the analogous statement is false when $G$ is nearly any other planar Hamiltonian graph (with at most 3 possible exceptions). A convex geometric graph is {\em convex-packable} if it can be asymptotica…
It is shown that the number of labelled graphs with n vertices that can be embedded in the orientable surface S_g of genus g grows asymptotically like $c^{(g)}n^{5(g-1)/2-1}γ^n n!$ where $c^{(g)}>0$, and $γ\approx 27.23$ is the exponential growth rate of planar graphs. This generalizes the result for the planar case g=0, obtained by Gimenez and Noy. An analogous result for non-orientable surfaces is obtained. In addition, it is proved that several parameters of interest behave asymptotically as in the planar case. It follows, in particular, that a random graph embeddable in S_g has a unique 2-…
Consider a family $\mathcal{T}$ of 3-connected graphs of moderate growth, and let $\mathcal{G}$ be the class of graphs whose 3-connected components are graphs in $\mathcal{T}$. We present a general framework for analyzing such graphs classes based on singularity analysis of generating functions, which generalizes previously studied cases such as planar graphs and series-parallel graphs. We provide a general result for the asymptotic number of graphs in $\mathcal{G}$, based on the singularities of the exponential generating function associated to $\mathcal{T}$. We derive limit laws, which are e…
We introduce the notion of an \emph{asymptotic triangulation} of the annulus. We show that asymptotic triangulations can be mutated as the usual triangulations and describe their exchange graph. Viewing asymptotic triangulations as limits of triangulations under the action of the mapping class group, we compactify the exchange graph of the triangulations of the annulus. The cases of tubes are also considered.
We show that almost all circulant graphs have automorphism groups as small as possible. Of the circulant graphs that do not have automorphism group as small as possible, we give some families of integers such that it is not true that almost all circulant graphs whose order lies in any one of these families, are normal. That almost all Cayley (di)graphs whose automorphism group is not as small as possible are normal was conjectured by the second author, so these results provide counterexamples to this conjecture. It is then shown that there is a large family of integers for which almost every c…
Let $G$ be a group and let $S$ be an inverse-closed and identity-free generating set of $G$. The \emph{Cayley graph} $\Cay(G,S)$ has vertex-set $G$ and two vertices $u$ and $v$ are adjacent if and only if $uv^{-1}\in S$. Let $CAY_d(n)$ be the number of isomorphism classes of $d$-valent Cayley graphs of order at most $n$. We show that $\log(CAY_d(n))\inΘ(d(\log n)^2)$, as $n\to\infty$. We also obtain some stronger results in the case $d=3$.
Let $G$ be a simple graph with $n$ vertices and let $$C(G;x)=\sum_{k=0}^n(-1)^{n-k}c(G,k)x^k$$ denote the Laplacian characteristic polynomial of $G$. Then if the size $|E(G)|$ is large compared to the maximum degree $Δ(G)$, Laplacian coefficients $c(G,k)$ are approximately normally distributed (by central and local limit theorems). We show that Laplacian coefficients of the paths, the cycles, the stars, the wheels and regular graphs of degree $d$ are approximately normally distributed respectively. We also point out that Laplacian coefficients of the complete graphs and the complete bipartite …
In this paper we find asymptotic enumerations for the number of line graphs on $n$-labelled vertices and for different types of related combinatorial objects called 2-covers. We find that the number of 2-covers, $s_n$, and proper 2-covers, $t_n$, on $[n]$ both have asymptotic growth $$ s_n\sim t_n\sim B_{2n}2^{-n}\exp(-\frac12\log(2n/\log n))= B_{2n}2^{-n}\sqrt{\frac{\log n}{2n}}, $$ where $B_{2n}$ is the $2n$th Bell number, while the number of restricted 2-covers, $u_n$, restricted, proper 2-covers on $[n]$, $v_n$, and line graphs $l_n$, all have growth $$ u_n\sim v_n\sim l_n\sim B_{2n}2^{-n}…
We introduce the asymptotic spectrum of graphs and apply the theory of asymptotic spectra of Strassen (J. Reine Angew. Math. 1988) to obtain a new dual characterisation of the Shannon capacity of graphs. Elements in the asymptotic spectrum of graphs include the Lovász theta number, the fractional clique cover number, the complement of the fractional orthogonal rank and the fractional Haemers bounds.
We show that asymptotic equivalence, in a strong form, holds between two random graph models with slightly differing edge probabilities under substantially weaker conditions than what might naively be expected. One application is a simple proof of a recent result by van den Esker, van der Hofstad and Hooghiemstra on the equivalence between graph distances for some random graph models.
We study the asymptotics for sparse exponential random graph models where the parameters may depend on the number of vertices of the graph. We obtain exact estimates for the mean and variance of the limiting probability distribution and the limiting log partition function of the edge-(single)-star model. They are in sharp contrast to the corresponding asymptotics in dense exponential random graph models. Similar analysis is done for directed sparse exponential random graph models parametrized by edges and multiple outward stars.
We study the asymptotic complexity constant of the sequence of approximating graphs to a fully symmetric self-similar structure on a finitely ramified fractal $K$. We show how full symmetry implies existence of the asymptotic complexity constant and obtain a sharp lower bound thereby answering two conjectures by Anema.
We find the asymptotic number of connected graphs with $k$ vertices and $k-1+l$ edges when $k,l$ approach infinity, reproving a result of Bender, Canfield and McKay. We use the {\em probabilistic method}, analyzing breadth-first search on the random graph $G(k,p)$ for an appropriate edge probability $p$. Central is analysis of a random walk with fixed beginning and end which is tilted to the left.
We study the asymptotic shape of random unlabelled graphs subject to certain subcriticality conditions. The graphs are sampled with probability proportional to a product of Boltzmann weights assigned to their $2$-connected components. As their number of vertices tends to infinity, we show that they admit the Brownian tree as Gromov--Hausdorff--Prokhorov scaling limit, and converge in a strengthened Benjamini--Schramm sense toward an infinite random graph. We also consider a family of random graphs that are allowed to be disconnected. Here a giant connected component emerges and the small fragm…
As proved by Kahn, the chromatic number and fractional chromatic number of a line graph agree asymptotically. That is, for any line graph $G$ we have $χ(G) \leq (1+o(1))χ_f(G)$. We extend this result to quasi-line graphs, an important subclass of claw-free graphs. Furthermore we prove that we can construct a colouring that achieves this bound in polynomial time, giving us an asymptotic approximation algorithm for the chromatic number of quasi-line graphs.
We study planar graphs with large negative curvature outside of a finite set and the spectral theory of Schr{ö}dinger operators on these graphs. We obtain estimates on the first and second order term of the eigenvalue asymptotics. Moreover, we prove a unique continuation result for eigenfunctions and decay properties of general eigenfunctions. The proofs rely on a detailed analysis of the geometry which employs a Copy-and-Paste procedure based on the Gauß-Bonnet theorem.
We study quantum versions of the Shannon capacity of graphs and non-commutative graphs. We introduce the asymptotic spectrum of graphs with respect to quantum and entanglement-assisted homomorphisms, and we introduce the asymptotic spectrum of non-commutative graphs with respect to entanglement-assisted homomorphisms. We apply Strassen's spectral theorem (J. Reine Angew. Math., 1988) in order to obtain dual characterizations of the corresponding Shannon capacities and asymptotic preorders in terms of their asymptotic spectra. This work extends the study of the asymptotic spectrum of graphs ini…
We introduce the multineighbor complex of a graph, which is a simplicial complex in which a simplex is a subset of the graph with a sufficient number of mutual neighbors. We investigate the asymptotic homological properties of such complexes for the Erdos-Renyi random graphs and obtain a number of vanishing and nonvanishing results. We use this construction to perform a topological data analysis classification of noisy synthetic point clouds obtaining favorable accuracy as obtained by the standard methods. The case when there is a single neighbor has been studied earlier by Mathew Kahle.
We compute the whole asymptotic expansion of the probability that a large uniform labeled graph is connected, and of the probability that a large uniform labeled tournament is irreducible. In both cases, we provide a combinatorial interpretation of the involved coefficients.
In this paper, we study exponential random graph models subject to certain constraints. We obtain some general results about the asymptotic structure of the model. We show that there exists non-trivial regions in the phase plane where the asymptotic structure is uniform and there also exists non-trivial regions in the phase plane where the asymptotic structure is non-uniform. We will get more refined results for the star model and in particular the two-star model for which a sharp transition from uniform to non-uniform structure, a stationary point and phase transitions will be obtained.
We give new general formulas for the asymptotics of the number of spanning trees of a large graph. A special case answers a question of McKay (1983) for regular graphs. The general answer involves a quantity for infinite graphs that we call "tree entropy", which we show is a logarithm of a normalized determinant of the graph Laplacian for infinite graphs. Tree entropy is also expressed using random walks. We relate tree entropy to the metric entropy of the uniform spanning forest process on quasi-transitive amenable graphs, extending a result of Burton and Pemantle (1993).
We compute the expected normalized trace norm (matrix/graph energy) of random symmetric band circulant matrices and graphs in the limit of large sizes, and obtain explicit bounds on the rate of convergence to the limit, and on the probabilities of large deviations. We also show that random symmetric band Toeplitz matrices have the same limit norm assuming that their band widths remain small relative to their sizes. We compare the limit norms across a range of related random matrix and graph ensembles.
The spectral radius of the adjacency matrix can impact both algorithmic efficiency as well as the stability of solutions to an underlying dynamical process. Although much research has considered the distribution of the spectral radius for undirected random graph models, as symmetric adjacency matrices are amenable to spectral analysis, very little work has focused on directed graphs. Consequently, we provide novel concentration results for the spectral radius of the directed Chung-Lu random graph model. We emphasize that our concentration results are applicable both asymptotically and to netwo…
In this paper, the leading term of the asymptotics of the number of possible final positions of a random walk on a directed Hamiltonian metric graph is found. Consideration of such dynamical systems could be motivated by problems of propagation of narrow wave packets on metric graphs.
The asymptotic dimension of metric spaces is an important notion in geometric group theory introduced by Gromov. The metric spaces considered in this paper are the ones whose underlying spaces are the vertex-sets of graphs and whose metrics are the distance functions in graphs. A standard compactness argument shows that it suffices to consider the asymptotic dimension of classes of finite graphs. In this paper we prove that the asymptotic dimension of any proper minor-closed family, any class of graphs of bounded tree-width, and any class of graphs of bounded layered tree-width are at most 2, …
We consider random graphs with a given degree sequence and show, under weak technical conditions, asymptotic normality of the number of components isomorphic to a given tree, first for the random multigraph given by the configuration model and then, by a conditioning argument, for the simple uniform random graph with the given degree sequence. Such conditioning is standard for convergence in probability, but much less straightforward for convergence in distribution as here. The proof uses the method of moments, and is based on a new estimate of mixed cumulants in a case of weakly dependent var…
