For $μ\in (0,1), c> 0,$ we identify the quantum group $SO_μ(3)$ as the universal object in the category of compact quantum groups acting by `orientation and volume preserving isometries' in the sense of \cite{goswami2} on the natural spectral triple on the Podles sphere $S^2_{μ, c}$ constructed by Dabrowski, D'Andrea, Landi and Wagner in \cite{Dabrowski_et_al}.
Hilbert space representations of the cross product *-algebra of the Hopf *-algebra U_q(su_2) and its module *-algebras O(S^2_{qc}) of Podles' spheres are studied. Two classes of representations are described by explicit formulas for the actions of the generators.
A Dirac operator D on the standard Podles sphere is defined and investigated. It yields a spectral triple such that |D|^{-z} is of trace class for Re z>0. Commutators with the Dirac operator give the distinguished 2-dimensional covariant differential calculus on the standard Podles sphere. The twisted cyclic cocycle associated with the volume form of the differential calculus is expressed by means of the Dirac operator.
Starting with the braided quantum group $\operatorname{SU}_q(2)$ for a complex deformation parameter $q$ we perform the construction of the quotient $\operatorname{SU}_q(2)/\mathbb{T}$ which serves as a model of a quantum sphere. Then we follow the reasoning of Podleś who for real $q$ classified quantum spaces with the action of $\operatorname{SU}_q(2)$ with appropriate spectral properties. These properties can also be expressed in the context of the braided quantum $\operatorname{SU}_q(2)$ (with complex $q$) and we find that they lead to precisely the same family of quantum spaces as found by…
We calculate the twisted Hochschild and cyclic homology (in the sense of Kustermans, Murphy and Tuset) of all Podles quantum spheres relative to arbitary automorphisms. Our calculations are based on a free resolution due to Masuda, Nakagami and Watanabe. The dimension drop in Hochschild homology can be overcome by twisting by automorphisms induced from the canonical modular automorphism associated to the Haar state on quantum SU(2). We specialize our results to the standard quantum sphere, and identify the class in twisted cyclic cohomology of the 2-cocycle discovered by Schmuedgen and Wagner …
Hilbert space representations of the cross product *-algebras of the Hopf *-algebra U_q(su_2) and its module *-algebras O(S^2_{qr}) of Podles spheres are investigated and classified by describing the action of generators. The representations are analyzed within two approaches. It is shown that the Hopf *-algebra O(SU_q(2)) of the quantum group SU_q(2) decomposes into an orthogonal sum of projective Hopf modules corresponding to irreducible integrable *-representations of the cross product algebras and that each irreducible integrable *-representation appears with multiplicity one. The projecti…
We construct compact quantum metric spaces (CQMS) starting with some C*algebra extension with a positive splitting. As special cases we discuss the case of Toeplitz algebra, quantum SU(2) and Podles sphere.
We continue the investigation of twisted homology theories in the context of dimension drop phenomena. This work unifies previous equivariant index calculations in twisted cyclic cohomology. We do this by proving the existence of the resolvent cocycle, a finitely summable analogue of the JLO cocycle, under weaker smoothness hypotheses and in the more general setting of `modular' spectral triples. As an application we show that using our twisted resolvent cocycle, we can obtain a local index formula for the Podles sphere. The resulting twisted cyclic cocycle has non-vanishing Hochschild class w…
We prove that the Podles spheres $S_q^2$ converge in quantum Gromov-Hausdorff distance to the classical 2-sphere as the deformation parameter $q$ tends to 1. Moreover, we construct a $q$-deformed analogue of the fuzzy spheres, and prove that they converge to $S_q^2$ as their linear dimension tends to infinity, thus providing a quantum counterpart to a classical result of Rieffel.
We study the spectral metric aspects of the standard Podles sphere, which is a homogeneous space for quantum SU(2). The point of departure is the real equivariant spectral triple investigated by Dabrowski and Sitarz. The Dirac operator of this spectral triple interprets the standard Podles sphere as a 0-dimensional space and is therefore not isospectral to the Dirac operator on the 2-sphere. We show that the seminorm coming from commutators with this Dirac operator provides the Podles sphere with the structure of a compact quantum metric space in the sense of Rieffel.
We give a new definition of dimension spectrum for non-regular spectral triples and compute the exact (i.e. non only the asymptotics) heat-trace of standard Podles spheres $S^2_q$ for $0<q<1$, study its behavior when $q\to 1$ and fully compute its exact spectral action for an explicit class of cut-off functions.
We define the $C^*$-algebra of quantum real projective space $\R P_q^2$, classify its irreducible representations and compute its $K$-theory. We also show that the $q$-disc of Klimek-Lesniewski can be obtained as a non-Galois $\Z_2$-quotient of the equator Podleś quantum sphere. On the way, we provide the Cartesian coordinates for all Podleś quantum spheres and determine an explicit form of isomorphisms between the $C^*$-algebras of the equilateral spheres and the $C^*$-algebra of the equator one.
We define even dimensional quantum spheres Sigma_q^2n that generalize to higher dimension the standard quantum two-sphere of Podle's and the four-sphere Sigma_q^4 obtained in the quantization of the Hopf bundle. The construction relies on an iterated Poisson double suspension of the standard Podle's two-sphere. The Poisson spheres that we get have the same symplectic foliation consisting of a degenerate point and a symplectic plane and, after quantization, have the same C^*-algebraic completion. We investigate their K-homology and K-theory by introducing Fredholm modules and projectors.
We consider two Z/2Z-actions on the Podles generic quantum spheres. They yield, as noncommutative quotient spaces, the Klimek-Lesniewski q-disc and the quantum real projective space, respectively. The C*-algebras of all these quantum spaces are described as graph C*-algebras. The K-groups of the thus presented C*-algebras are then easily determined from the general theory of graph C*-algebras. For the quantum real projective space, we also recall the classification of the classes of irreducible *-representations of its algebra and give a linear basis for this algebra.
We prove that every surjective isometry between the unit spheres of two von Neumann algebras admits a unique extension to a surjective real linear isometry between these two algebras.
We introduce and study two new examples of noncommutative spheres: the half-liberated sphere, and the free sphere. Together with the usual sphere, these two spheres have the property that the corresponding quantum isometry group is "easy", in the representation theory sense. We present as well some general comments on the axiomatization problem, and on the "untwisted" and "non-easy" case.
We prove that every surjective isometry from the unit sphere of a rank-2 Cartan factor $C$ onto the unit sphere of a real Banach space $Y$, admits an extension to a surjective real linear isometry from $C$ onto $Y$. The conclusion also covers the case in which $C$ is a spin factor. This result closes an open problem and, combined with the conclusion in a previous paper, allows us to establish that every JBW$^*$-triple $M$ satisfies the Mazur--Ulam property, that is, every surjective isometry from its unit sphere onto the unit sphere of a arbitrary real Banach space $Y$ admits an extension to a…
The Podles quantum sphere S^2_q admits a natural commutative C*-subalgebra I_q with spectrum {0} \cup {q^{2k}: k = 0,1,2,...}, which may therefore be considered as a quantised version of a classical interval. We study here the compact quantum metric space structure on I_q inherited from the corresponding structure on S^2_q, and provide an explicit formula for the metric induced on the spectrum. Moreover, we show that the resulting metric spaces vary continuously in the deformation parameter q with respect to the Gromov-Hausdorff distance, and that they converge to a classical interval of lengt…
The sphere $S^{N-1}_\mathbb R$ has a half-liberated analogue $S^{N-1}_{\mathbb R,*}$, and a free analogue $S^{N-1}_{\mathbb R,+}$. This is a presentation of the construction and main properties of these noncommutative spheres, $S^{N-1}_\mathbb R\subset S^{N-1}_{\mathbb R,*}\subset S^{N-1}_{\mathbb R,+}$, and of their quantum isometry groups.
The Poisson and Martin boundaries for invariant random walks on the dual of the orthogonal quantum groups A_o(F), are identified with higher dimensional Podles spheres that we describe in terms of generators and relations. This provides the first such identification for random walks on non-amenable discrete quantum groups.
We extend the notion of Poincaré duality in KK-theory to the setting of quantum group actions. An important ingredient in our approach is the replacement of ordinary tensor products by braided tensor products. Along the way we discuss general properties of equivariant KK-theory for locally compact quantum groups, including the construction of exterior products. As an example, we prove that the standard Podleś sphere is equivariantly Poincaré dual to itself.
We discuss the half-liberation operation $X\to X^*$, for the algebraic submanifolds of the unit sphere, $X\subset S^{N-1}_\mathbb C$. There are several ways of constructing this correspondence, and we take them into account. Our main results concern the computation of the affine quantum isometry group $G^+(X^*)$, for the sphere itself.
We prove that every surjective isometry from the unit sphere of the space $K(H),$ of all compact operators on an arbitrary complex Hilbert space $H$, onto the unit sphere of an arbitrary real Banach space $Y$ can be extended to a surjective real linear isometry from $K(H)$ onto $Y$. This is probably the first example of an infinite dimensional non-commutative C$^*$-algebra containing no unitaries and satisfying the Mazur--Ulam property. We also prove that all compact C$^*$-algebras and all weakly compact JB$^*$-triples satisfy the Mazur--Ulam property.
We prove that every JBW$^*$-triple $M$ with rank one or rank bigger than or equal to three satisfies the Mazur--Ulam property, that is, every surjective isometry from the unit sphere of $M$ onto the unit sphere of another Banach space $Y$ extends to a surjective real linear isometry from $M$ onto $Y$. We also show that the same conclusion holds if $M$ is not a JBW$^*$-triple factor, or more generally, if the atomic part of $M^{**}$ is not a rank two Cartan factor.
Given two complex Hilbert spaces $H$ and $K$, let $S(B(H))$ and $S(B(K))$ denote the unit spheres of the C$^*$-algebras $B(H)$ and $B(K)$ of all bounded linear operators on $H$ and $K$, respectively. We prove that every surjective isometry $f: S(B(K)) \to S(B(H))$ admits an extension to a surjective complex linear or conjugate linear isometry $T: B(K)\to B(H)$. This provides a positive answer to Tingley's problem in the setting of $B(H)$ spaces.
Given a C$^*$-algebra $A$, let $S(A^+)$ denote the set of those positive elements in the unit sphere of $A$. Let $H_1$, $H_2,$ $H_3$ and $H_4$ be complex Hilbert spaces, where $H_3$ and $H_4$ are infinite-dimensional and separable. In this note we prove a variant of Tingley's problem by showing that every surjective isometry $Δ: S(B(H_1)^+)\to S(B(H_2)^+)$ or (respectively, $Δ: S(K(H_3)^+)\to S(K(H_4)^+)$) admits a unique extension to a surjective complex linear isometry from $B(H_1)$ onto $B(H_2))$ (respectively, from $K(H_3)$ onto $B(H_4)$). This provides a positive answer to a conjecture po…
We prove that every surjective isometry between the unit spheres of two atomic JBW$^*$-triples $E$ and $B$ admits a unit extension to a surjective real linear isometry from $E$ into $B$. This result constitutes a new positive answer to Tignley's problem in the Jordan setting.
We prove that every unital C*-algebra $A$ has the Mazur--Ulam property. Namely, every surjective isometry from the unit sphere $S_A$ of $A$ onto the unit sphere $S_Y$ of another normed space $Y$ extends to a real linear map. This extends the result of A. M. Peralta and F. J. Fernandez-Polo who have proved the same under the additional assumption that both $A$ and $Y$ are von Neumann algebras. In the course of the proof, we strengthen Mankiewicz's theorem and prove that every surjective isometry from a closed unit ball with enough extreme points onto an arbitrary convex subset of a normed space…
We prove an analogue of the Baum-Connes conjecture for free orthogonal quantum groups. More precisely, we show that these quantum groups have a $ γ$-element and that $ γ= 1 $. It follows that free orthogonal quantum groups are $ K $-amenable. We compute explicitly their $ K $-theory and deduce in the unimodular case that the corresponding reduced $ C^* $-algebras do not contain nontrivial idempotents. Our approach is based on the reformulation of the Baum-Connes conjecture by Meyer and Nest using the language of triangulated categories. An important ingredient is the theory of monoidal equival…
Given any linear isometry from a Hilbert space to its square one can explicitly construct a so-called Pythagorean unitary representation of Richard Thompson's group F. We introduce a condition on the isometry implying that the associated representation does not contain any induced representations by finite-dimensional ones. This provides the first result of this kind. We illustrate this theorem via a family of representations parametrised by the real 3-sphere for which all of them have this property except two sub-circles.
