We study the dynamics of homogeneous isotropic FRW cosmologies with positive spatial curvature in $f(R)$-gravity, paying special attention to the existence of Einstein static models and only study forms of $f(R)=R^n$ for which these static models have been shown to exist. We construct a compact state space and identify past and future attractors of the system and recover a previously discovered future attractor corresponding to an expanding accelerating model. We also discuss the existence of universes which have both a past and future bounce, a phenomenon which is absent in General Relativity.
An effective Lagrangian approach based on an extended Einstein-Aether (EA) model is presented and formulated in a generic non flat Fridman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) space-time. For a flat FLRW space-time, a Friedmann equation similar to the one obtained in Quantum Loop Cosmology (QLC) is reproduced, with related non singular bounce solution. Finally, the Static Spherically Symmetric (SSS) solutions are investigated.
We show how to derive several families of accelerating universe solutions to an Einstein-Aether gravity theory. These solutions provide possible descriptions of inflationary behaviour in the early universe and late-time cosmological acceleration.
We show that bouncing open or flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies are inconsistent with worldsheet string theory to first approximation. Specifically, the Virasoro constraint translates to the null energy condition in spacetime at leading order in the alpha-prime expansion. Thus one must go beyond minimally-coupled Einstein gravity in order to find bounce solutions.
Solutions to the Einstein equations for Bianchi IX cosmologies are examined through the use of Ellis MacCallum Wainwright (expansion-normalized) variables. Using an iterative map derived from the Einstein equations one can construct an infinite number of periodic solutions. The simplest periodic solutions consist of 3-cycles. It is shown that for 3-cycles the time series of the logarithms of the expansion-normalized spatial curvature components vs normalized time (which is runs backwards towards the initial singularity), generates a set of self-similar golden rectangles. In addition the golden…
We explore singularity-free and geodesically-complete cosmologies based on manifolds that are not quite Lorentzian. The metric can be either smooth everywhere or non-degenerate everywhere, but not both, depending on the coordinate system. The smooth metric gives an Einstein tensor that is first order in derivatives while the non-degenerate metric has a piecewise FLRW form. On such a manifold the universe can transition from expanding to contracting, or vice versa, with the Einstein equations satisfied everywhere and without violation of standard energy conditions. We also obtain a correspondin…
Cosmologies based on General Relativity encompassing an anti-symmetric connection (torsion) can display nice desirable features as the absence of the initial singularity and the possibility of inflation in the early stage of the universe. After briefly reviewing the standard approach to the cosmology with torsion, we generalize it to demonstrate that several theories of torsion gravity are possible using different choices of the diffeomorphic invariants in the Lagrangians. As a result, distinct cosmologies emerge. In all of them it is possible that the universe avoids the initial singularity a…
In this study, FRW-cosmologies with some matter groups such as monopole-domain wall, monopole-Chaplygin gas and monopole-strange quark matter in the scalar theory of gravitation based on Lyra geometry are investigated. We expand two exact models as static case and time-depended case for each matter groups in order to solve field equations in the scalar theory. For each matter groups, the solutions are introduced as the models of expanding universe, exponentially. Hubble parameters in the case of k=0,-1,1 are obtained for these models. Furthermore, we realize interesting result which the well-k…
A frame representation is used to derive a first order quasi-linear symmetric hyperbolic system for a scalar field minimally coupled to gravity. This procedure is inspired by similar evolution equations introduced by Friedrich to study the Einstein-Euler system. The resulting evolution system is used to show that small nonlinear perturbations of expanding Friedman-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker backgrounds, with scalar field potentials satisfying certain future asymptotic conditions, decay exponentially to zero, in synchronous time.
In this paper, we first show that the Einstein field equations for all perfect-fluid FLRW cosmologies can be written as a planar dynamical system with the equation of state parameter $w$ and cosmological constant $Λ$ as parameters. An important equilibrium point of this dynamical system is the origin which represents Minkowski spacetime. It is shown that the Einstein field equations in a neigbourhood of this point are equivalent to a degenerate Bogdanov-Takens normal form. This normal form admits a set of equilibrium points that describes a set of solutions to the Einstein field equations that…
We solve isotropic, homogeneous cosmological models containing a self-interacting scalar field. Calculations are performed in four and two-dimensional spacetimes. We find several exact solutions that have an inflationary regime or has a final Friedmann stage. Also their asymptotically stability is studied.
The conformal Einstein equations for a tracefree (radiation) perfect fluid are derived in terms of the Levi-Civita connection of a conformally rescaled metric. These equations are used to provide a non-linear stability result for de Sitter-like tracefree (radiation) perfect fluid Friedman-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker cosmological models. The solutions thus obtained exist globally towards the future and are future geodesically complete.
We discuss a mechanism that induces a time-dependent vacuum energy on cosmological scales. It is based on the instability induced renormalization triggered by the low energy quantum fluctuations in a Universe with a positive cosmological constant. We employ the dynamical systems approach to study the qualitative behavior of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies where the cosmological constant is dynamically evolving according with this nonperturbative scaling at low energies. It will be shown that it is possible to realize a "two regimes" dark energy phases, where an unstable early phase of p…
The dynamics of the most general Bianchi IX cosmology with three time dependent scale factors for the Einstein-Skyrme system is analyzed. For the Skyrmion, a generalized hedgehog ansatz with unit baryon charge is introduced. The most remarkable feature of this ansatz is that, in the above topologically non-trivial sector with unit topological charge, the Skyrme field equations are identically satisfied on any Bianchi IX metric. We will show that due to this feature the complete set of coupled Einstein-Skyrme field equations can be deduced from a suitable minisuperspace Lagrangian. The latter a…
We examine the potential strong coupling problem at early times in a bouncing cosmological model with "strong gravity in the past" (Jordan frame), which is conformally related to inflation (Einstein frame). From naive dimensional analysis in the Jordan frame one would conclude that the quantum strong coupling energy scale can be lower than the classical energy scale. However, from the Einstein frame prospective this should not be the case. We illustrate this point by calculation in the Jordan frame which shows cancellations of the dangerous contributions in the tree level amplitude.
The Einstein equations for an isotropic and homogeneous Friedmann--Robertson--Walker Universe in the presence of a quintessence scalar field are shown to be described in a unified way, formally identical to the dynamics of a relativistic particle moving on a two--dimensional spacetime. The correct Lagrangian for the system is presented and used to construct a spinor quantum cosmology theory using Breit's prescription. The theory is supersymmetric when written in Majorana representation. The spinor components interact through a potential that unifies spacetime curvature and quintessence. An exa…
Spherical collapse has turned out to be a successful semi-analytic model to study structure formation in different DE models and theories of gravity. Nevertheless, the process of virialization is commonly studied on the basis of the virial theorem of classical mechanics. In the present paper, a fully generally-relativistic virial theorem based on the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) solution for homogeneous, perfect-fluid spheres is constructed for the Einstein-de Sitter and ΛCDM cosmologies. We investigate the accuracy of classical virialization studies on cosmological scales and consider vir…
In this paper, we study the phase space of cosmological models in the context of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. More specifically, we consider a generalized dynamical system that encapsulates the main features of the theory and for the cases that this is rendered autonomous, we analyze its equilibrium points and stable and unstable manifolds corresponding to several distinct cosmological evolutions. As we demonstrate, the phase space is quite rich and contains invariant structures, which dictate the conditions under which the theory may be valid and viable in describing the evolution Universe d…
We investigate the dynamics of $f(R)$ gravity in Jordan and Einstein frames. First, we perform a phase-space singularities analysis in both frames. We show that, typically, anisotropic singularities are absent in the Einstein frame, whereas they may appear in the Jordan frame. We conciliate this apparent inconsistency by showing that the necessary conditions for the existence of the Einstein frame are namely the same ones assuring the absence of the anisotropic singularities in the Jordan frame. In other words, we show that, at least in the context of Bianchi I cosmologies, the Einstein frame …
We investigate the qualitative evolution of (D+1)-dimensional cosmological models in f(R) gravity for the general case of the function f(R). The analysis is specified for various examples, including the (D+1)-dimensional generalization of the Starobinsky model, models with polynomial and exponential functions. The cosmological dynamics are compared in the Einstein and Jordan representations of the corresponding scalar-tensor theory. The features of the cosmological evolution are discussed for Einstein frame potentials taking negative values in certain regions of the field space.
We consider the classical linear stability of a static universe filled with a non-interacting mixture of isotropic radiation and a ghost scalar field. Unlike the conventional Einstein static model, this cosmology is stable against homogeneous and isotropic perturbations. This is shown by means of exact oscillatory solutions about the original static state. We also examine the linear response of the static ghost universe to all types of inhomogeneous fluctuations, namely density, vorticity and gravitational-wave perturbations. The results show that the static background constrains the linear ev…
In this paper we propose a scheme which allows one to find all possible exponential solutions of special class -- non-constant volume solutions -- in Lovelock gravity in arbitrary number of dimensions and with arbitrate combinations of Lovelock terms. We apply this scheme to (6+1)- and (7+1)-dimensional flat anisotropic cosmologies in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet and third-order Lovelock gravity to demonstrate how our scheme does work. In course of this demonstration we derive all possible solutions in (6+1) and (7+1) dimensions and compare solutions and their abundance between cases with different L…
The dynamics of cosmological models with isotropic matter sources (perfect fluids) is extensively studied in the literature; in comparison, the dynamics of cosmological models with anisotropic matter sources is not. In this paper we consider spatially homogeneous locally rotationally symmetric solutions of the Einstein equations with a large class of anisotropic matter models including collisionless matter (Vlasov), elastic matter, and magnetic fields. The dynamics of models of Bianchi types I, II, and IX are completely described; the two most striking results are the following: (i) There exis…
We present some exact solutions of the Einstein equations with an anisotropic fluid exploiting the Chaplygin equation of state. The solutions describe spacetimes with two identical T regions and an intermediate static spherically symmetric R region containing a wormhole. The metric in the T region represents an anisotropic Kantowski-Sachs cosmological model. Its evolution starts from an event horizon and develops according to different scenarios including eternal expansion, contraction and also a finite universe lifetime.
It is shown that the generalized Collins--Stewart radiation and Milne solutions are attractors of the massless Einstein--Vlasov system for Bianchi types II and V spacetimes, respectively. The proof is based on an energy method and bootstrap argument which are used to determine the decay rates of the perturbations away from the attractors.
