In this paper, we first show that the Einstein field equations for all perfect-fluid FLRW cosmologies can be written as a planar dynamical system with the equation of state parameter $w$ and cosmological constant $Λ$ as parameters. An important equilibrium point of this dynamical system is the origin which represents Minkowski spacetime. It is shown that the Einstein field equations in a neigbourhood of this point are equivalent to a degenerate Bogdanov-Takens normal form. This normal form admits a set of equilibrium points that describes a set of solutions to the Einstein field equations that have a constant rate of expansion, negative spatial curvature, zero cosmological constant and dust.
The standard energy conditions of classical general relativity are applied to FLRW cosmologies containing sudden future singularities. Here we show, in a model independent way, that although such cosmologies can satisfy the null, weak and strong energy conditions, they always fail to satisfy the dominant energy condition. They require a divergent spacelike energy flux in all but the comoving frame.
Exploiting the existence of two "cosmological" constants, one associated with the classical Lovelock theorem and one with the vacuum energy density, we argue, in a model independent way, that in spatially closed FLRW cosmologies with a positive definite effective cosmological constant there exists a range in this constant that serves as a sufficient condition for the satisfaction of the null, weak, strong and dominant energy conditions at a bounce. The application of energy conditions is not unambiguous and we show how the bounce can be considered classically and how, we believe more reasonabl…
The standard model of cosmology is based on homogeneous-isotropic solutions of Einstein's equations. These solutions are known to be gravitationally unstable to local inhomogeneous perturbations, commonly described as evolving on a background given by the same solutions. In this picture, the FLRW backgrounds are taken to describe the average over inhomogeneous perturbations for all times. We study in the present article the (in)stability of FLRW dust backgrounds within a class of averaged inhomogeneous cosmologies. We examine the phase portraits of the latter, discuss their fixed points and or…
We use phase space method to study possible consequences of fixed points in flat FLRW models. One of these consequences is that a fluid with a finite sound speed, or a differentiable pressure, reaches a fixed point in an infinite time and has no finite-time singularities of types I, II and III described in hep-th/0501025. It is impossible for such a fluid to cross the phantom divide in a finite time. We show that a divergent $dp/dH$, or a speed of sound is necessary but not sufficient condition for phantom crossing. We use pressure properties, such as asymptotic behavior and fixed points, to q…
The fundamental singularity theorem of FLRW cosmologies assumes that the matter content in the cosmological model obeys the strong energy condition along with a nonpositive cosmological constant which gives rise to an irrotational geodesic singularity. In this paper, we show that the important case of a spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universe with barotropic matter obeying only the \emph{weak} energy condition with a nonnegative cosmological constant also contains a past singularity. We accomplish this using topological methods from dynamical systems theory. The methods emp…
An effective Lagrangian approach based on an extended Einstein-Aether (EA) model is presented and formulated in a generic non flat Fridman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) space-time. For a flat FLRW space-time, a Friedmann equation similar to the one obtained in Quantum Loop Cosmology (QLC) is reproduced, with related non singular bounce solution. Finally, the Static Spherically Symmetric (SSS) solutions are investigated.

The shape of the orbit of a free particle is examined in FLRW cosmologies. The spatial projection of the orbit is time-independent and has a simple geometric description. We relate this description to the expression in terms of standard FLRW coordinates.
We consider the evolution of a 4D-universe embedded in a five-dimensional (bulk) world with a large extra dimension and a cosmological constant. The cosmology in 5D possesses "wave-like" character in the sense that the metric coefficients in the bulk are functions of the extra coordinate and time in a way similar to a pulse or traveling wave propagating along the fifth dimension. This assumption is motivated by some recent work presenting the big-bang as a higher dimensional shock wave. We show that this assumption, together with an equation of state for the effective matter quantities in 4D, …
A novel analytical method for f(R) modified theories without matter in Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker spacetimes is introduced. The equation of motion for the scale factor in terms of cosmic time is reduced to the equation for the evolution of the Ricci scalar R with the Hubble parameter H. The solution of equation of motion for actions of the form of power law in Ricci scalar R, is presented with a detailed elaboration of the action quadratic in R. The reverse use of the introduced method is exemplified in finding functional forms f(R) which lead to specified scale factor functions. The …
We show that all domain-wall solutions of gravity coupled to scalar fields for which the worldvolume geometry is Minkowski or anti-de Sitter admit Killing spinors, and satisfy corresponding first-order equations involving a superpotential determined by the solution. By analytic continuation, all flat or closed FLRW cosmologies are shown to satisfy similar first-order equations arising from the existence of ``pseudo-Killing'' spinors.
Scalar field cosmologies with a generalized harmonic potential and a matter fluid with a barotropic Equation of State (EoS) with barotropic index $γ$ for Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS) Bianchi III metric and open Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric are investigated. Methods from the theory of averaging of nonlinear dynamical systems are used to prove that time-dependent systems and their corresponding time-averaged versions have the same late-time dynamics. Therefore, simple time-averaged systems determine the future asymptotic behavior. Depending on values of barotropic in…
Scalar field cosmologies with a generalized harmonic potential and matter with energy density $ρ_m$, pressure $p_m$, and barotropic equation of state (EoS) $p_m=(γ-1)ρ_m, \; γ\in[0,2]$ in Kantowski-Sachs (KS) and closed Friedmann--Lemaître--Robertson--Walker (FLRW) metrics are investigated. We use methods from non--linear dynamical systems theory and averaging theory considering a time--dependent perturbation function $D$. We define a regular dynamical system over a compact phase space, obtaining global results. That is, for KS metric the global late--time attractors of full and time--averaged…
We come back on the dynamical properties of k-essential cosmological models and show how the interesting phenomenological features of those models are related to the existence of boundaries in the phase surface. We focus our attention to the branching points where the energy density has an extremum and the effective speed of sound diverges. We discuss the behaviour of solutions of a general class of cosmological models exhibiting such curves and give two possible interpretations; the most interesting possibility regards the arrow of time that is reversed in trespassing the branching curve. Thi…
A flat FLRW cosmological model with perfect fluid comprising of variable Chaplygin gas has been studied in context of f(R; T) gravity with particle creation. The considered scale factors describe the accelerated expansion of universe due to the effective negative pressure produced during evolution of universe. The role of particle creation pressure on the cosmological parameters have been discussed in detail. By considering well accepted values of free parameters, the late time expansion of the universe with energy conditions have also been studied. The state-finder diagnostic for the consider…
We discuss the particle horizon problem in the framework of spatially homogeneous and isotropic scalar cosmologies. To this purpose we consider a Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetime with possibly non-zero spatial sectional curvature (and arbitrary dimension), and assume that the content of the universe is a family of perfect fluids, plus a scalar field that can be a quintessence or a phantom (depending on the sign of the kinetic part in its action functional). We show that the occurrence of a particle horizon is unavoidable if the field is a quintessence, the spatial curvature…
The Asymptotically Safe Gravity provides a framework for the description of gravity from the trans-Planckian regime to cosmological scales. According to this scenario, the cosmological constant and Newton's coupling are functions of the energy scale whose evolution is dictated by the renormalization group equations. The formulation of the renormalization group equations on foliated spacetimes, based on the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism, furnishes a natural way to construct the RG energy scale from the spectrum of the laplacian operator on the spatial slices. Combining this idea with a …
This thesis concerns the compatibility of inhomogeneous cosmologies with our present understanding of the universe. It is a problem of some interest to find the class of all relativistic cosmological models which are capable of providing a reasonable `fit' to the universe. This thesis, in some respects, is part of this process. We consider Stephani models, which are a generalisation of the standard Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) models, which can be thought of as FLRW models with acceleration and pressure gradients. Thus these models generalise the `dust' assumption of standard cos…
We explore singularity-free and geodesically-complete cosmologies based on manifolds that are not quite Lorentzian. The metric can be either smooth everywhere or non-degenerate everywhere, but not both, depending on the coordinate system. The smooth metric gives an Einstein tensor that is first order in derivatives while the non-degenerate metric has a piecewise FLRW form. On such a manifold the universe can transition from expanding to contracting, or vice versa, with the Einstein equations satisfied everywhere and without violation of standard energy conditions. We also obtain a correspondin…
Scalar field cosmologies with a generalized harmonic potential and a matter fluid with a barotropic Equation of State (EoS) with barotropic index $γ$ for the Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS) Bianchi I and flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metrics are investigated. Methods from the theory of averaging of nonlinear dynamical systems are used to prove that time-dependent systems and their corresponding time-averaged versions have the same late-time dynamics. Therefore, the simplest time-averaged system determines the future asymptotic behavior. Depending on the values of $γ$, th…
Cosmological models with time dependent $Λ$ (read as $Λ(t)$) have been investigated widely in the literature. Models that solve background dynamics analytically, are of special interest. Additionally, the allowance of past or future singularities at finite cosmic time in a specific model signals for a generic test on its viabilities with the current observations. Following these, in this work we consider a variety of $Λ(t)$ models focusing on their evolutions and singular behaviour. We found that a series of models in this class can be exactly solved when the background universe is described b…
It is shown that Milne models (a subclass of FLRW spacetimes with negative spatial curvature) are nonlinearly stable in the set of solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov-Maxwell system, describing universes with ensembles of collisionless self-gravitating, charged particles. The system contains various slowly decaying borderline terms in the mutually coupled equations describing the propagation of particles and Maxwell fields. The effects of those terms are controlled using a suitable hierarchy based on the energy density of the matter fields.
Local and global phase-space descriptions and averaging methods are used to find qualitative features of solutions for the FLRW and the Bianchi I metrics in the context of scalar field cosmologies with arbitrary potentials and arbitrary couplings to matter. The stability of the equilibrium points in a phase-space as well as the dynamics in the regime where the scalar field diverges are studied. Equilibrium points that represent some solutions of cosmological interest such as: several types of scaling solutions, a kinetic dominated solution representing a stiff fluid, a solution dominated by an…
The present thesis is focused on the study of FLRW cosmology in modified gravities and with scalar fields. The mystery of dark energy has made that the last decade, many efforts in theoretical physics have been focused on the explanation of the current acceleration of the Universe expansion. On the other hand, an early accelerated epoch, known as inflation, is also required in the standard cosmological model in order to fit the observational data. Here, we study the possibility to explain both effects under the same mechanism, by means of scalar fields or modified gravity. In this sense, F(R) …
In this paper I examine the phase space dynamics in the framework of Non-Projectable Hořava-Lifshitz bouncing cosmologies. By considering a closed Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) geometry, the first integral contains a correction term that leads to nonsingular metastable bounces in the early evolution of the universe. The matter content of the model is a massive conformally coupled scalar field, dust and radiation. A nonvanishing cosmological constant connected to a de Sitter attractor in the phase space is also assumed. In narrow windows of the parameter space, labeled by an intege…
In the context of theories of Kaluza-Klein type, with a large extra dimension, we study self-similar cosmological models in 5D that are homogeneous, anisotropic and spatially flat. The "ladder" to go between the physics in 5D and 4D is provided by Campbell-Maagard's embedding theorems. We show that the 5-dimensional field equations $R_{AB} = 0$ determine the form of the similarity variable. There are three different possibilities: homothetic, conformal and "wave-like" solutions in 5D. We derive the most general homothetic and conformal solutions to the 5D field equations. They require the extr…
The problem of matching different regions of spacetime in order to construct inhomogeneous cosmological models is investigated in the context of Lagrangian theories of gravity constructed from general analytic functions f(R), and from non-analytic theories with f(R)=R^n. In all of the cases studied, we find that it is impossible to satisfy the required junction conditions without the large-scale behaviour reducing to that expected from Einstein's equations with a cosmological constant. For theories with analytic f(R) this suggests that the usual treatment of weak-field systems as perturbations…
We are investigating the dynamics of a new Poincaré gauge theory of gravity model, which has cross coupling between the spin-0$^+$ and spin-0$^-$ modes. To this end we here consider a very appropriate situation---homogeneous-isotropic cosmologies---which is relatively simple, and yet all the modes have non-trivial dynamics which reveals physically interesting and possibly observable results. More specifically we consider manifestly isotropic Bianchi class A cosmologies; for this case we find an effective Lagrangian and Hamiltonian for the dynamical system. The Lagrange equations for these mode…
The tension between early and late Universe probes of the Hubble constant has motivated various new FLRW cosmologies. Here, we reanalyse the Hubble tension with a recent age of the Universe constraint. This allows us to restrict attention to matter and a dark energy sector that we treat without assuming a specific model. Assuming analyticity of the Hubble parameter $H(z)$, and a generic low redshift modification to flat $Λ$CDM, we find that low redshift data ($z \lesssim 2.5$) and well-motivated priors only permit a dark energy sector close to the cosmological constant $Λ$. This restriction ru…
In standard perturbation approaches and N-body simulations, inhomogeneities are described to evolve on a predefined background cosmology, commonly taken as the homogeneous-isotropic solutions of Einstein's field equations (Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmologies). In order to make physical sense, this background cosmology must provide a reasonable description of the effective, i.e. spatially averaged, evolution of structure inhomogeneities also in the nonlinear regime. Guided by the insights that (i) the average over an inhomogeneous distribution of matter and geometry is in gen…
For general relativistic spacetimes filled with an irrotational perfect fluid a generalized form of Friedmann's equations governing the expansion factor of spatially averaged portions of inhomogeneous cosmologies is derived. The averaging problem for scalar quantities is condensed into the problem of finding an `effective equation of state' including kinematical as well as dynamical `backreaction' terms that measure the departure from a standard FLRW cosmology. Applications of the averaged models are outlined including radiation-dominated and scalar field cosmologies (inflationary and dilaton/…
We investigate the dynamics of the FLRW flat cosmological models in which the vacuum energy varies with redshift. A particularly well motivated model of this type is the so-called quantum field vacuum, in which both kind of terms $H^{2}$ and constant appear in the effective dark energy density affecting the evolution of the main cosmological functions at the background and perturbation levels. Specifically, it turns out that the functional form of the quantum vacuum endows the vacuum energy of a mild dynamical evolution which could be observed nowadays and appears as dynamical dark energy. Int…
In this paper, we use both local and global phase-space descriptions and averaging methods to find qualitative features of solutions for the FLRW and Bianchi I metrics in the context of scalar field cosmologies with arbitrary potentials and arbitrary couplings to matter. We prove new theorems and also retrieve previous results that can be seen as corollaries of the present results. We study the stability of the equilibrium points in a phase-space, as well as the dynamics in the regime where the scalar field diverges. We obtain equilibrium points that represent some solutions of cosmological in…
For the quadratic Poincaré gauge theory of gravity (PG) we consider the FLRW cosmologies using an isotropic Bianchi representation. Here the considered cosmologies are for the general case: all the even and odd parity terms of the quadratic PG with their respective scalar and pseudoscalar parameters are allowed with no \emph{a priori} restrictions on their values. With the aid of a manifestly homogeneous and isotropic representation, an effective Lagrangian gives the second order dynamical equations for the gauge potentials. An equivalent set of first order equations for the observables is pre…
We revisit a general minisuperspace (MSS) formalism for scalar-tensor (ST) FLRW type cosmological models in arbitrary frame with perfect fluid source. We discuss how to impose Cauchy data on the corresponding dynamical system in order to reconstruct standard (ΛCDM) cosmological model. So far, the integrability of such models has been extensively studied in the Einstein or Jordan frames mainly. We extend these studies to arbitrary frame taking into account non-minimal coupling between matter and gravity. To this aim we explore a gauge freedom associated with a choice of lapse function. We show …
Among the suggested solutions to the cosmological constant problem, we find the idea of a dynamic vacuum, with an energy density decaying with the universe expansion. We investigate the possibility of a variation in the gravitational constant as well, induced, at the cosmological scale, by the vacuum decay. We consider an effective Brans-Dicke theory in the spatially flat FLRW spacetime, finding late time solutions characterized by a constant ratio between the matter and vacuum energy densities. By using the observed limits for the universe age, we fix the only free parameter of our solutions,…

Exact dynamical equations for a generic dust matter source field in a cosmological context are formulated with respect to a non-comoving Newtonian-like timelike reference congruence and investigated for internal consistency. On the basis of a lapse function $N$ (the relativistic acceleration scalar potential) which evolves along the reference congruence according to $\dot{N} = αΘN$ ($α= {const}$), we find that consistency of the quasi-Newtonian dynamical equations is not attained at the first derivative level. We then proceed to show that a self-consistent set can be obtained by linearising th…
Previous work in the literature had built a formalism for spatially averaged equations for the scale factor, giving rise to an averaged Raychaudhuri equation and averaged Hamiltonian constraint, which involve a backreaction source term. The present paper extends these equations to include models with variable Newton parameter and variable cosmological term, motivated by the nonperturbative renormalization program for quantum gravity based upon the Einstein-Hilbert action. We focus on the Brans-Dicke form of the renormalization-group improved action functional. The coupling between backreaction…
We study the dynamical behaviour of gauge-invariant linear perturbations in spherically symmetric dust cosmologies including a cosmological constant. In contrast to spatially homogeneous FLRW models, the reduced degree of spatial symmetry causes a non-trivial dynamical coupling of gauge-invariant quantities already at first order perturbation theory and the strength and influence of this coupling on the spacetime evolution is investigated here. We present results on the underlying dynamical equations augmented by a cosmological constant and integrate them numerically. We also present a method …
Cosmological N-body simulations are now being performed using Newtonian gravity on scales larger than the Hubble radius. It is well known that a uniformly expanding, homogeneous ball of dust in Newtonian gravity satisfies the same equations as arise in relativistic FLRW cosmology, and it also is known that a correspondence between Newtonian and relativistic dust cosmologies continues to hold in linearized perturbation theory in the marginally bound/spatially flat case. Nevertheless, it is far from obvious that Newtonian gravity can provide a good global description of an inhomogeneous cosmolog…
Spherical collapse has turned out to be a successful semi-analytic model to study structure formation in different DE models and theories of gravity. Nevertheless, the process of virialization is commonly studied on the basis of the virial theorem of classical mechanics. In the present paper, a fully generally-relativistic virial theorem based on the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) solution for homogeneous, perfect-fluid spheres is constructed for the Einstein-de Sitter and ΛCDM cosmologies. We investigate the accuracy of classical virialization studies on cosmological scales and consider vir…
We consider the Hawking-Ellis (Segre-Plebanski) classification of stress-energy tensors, both in the test-field limit, and in the presence of back-reaction governed by the usual Einstein equations. For test fields it is not too difficult to get a type~IV stress-energy via quantum vacuum polarization effects. (For example, consider the Unruh quantum vacuum state for a massless scalar field in the Schwarzschild background.) However, in the presence of back-reaction driven by the ordinary Einstein equations the situation is often much more constrained. For instance: (1) in any static spacetime th…
We set up an Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in four dimensions, based on the recent formulation of pure gravity with extra dimensions of vanishing metrical length [1]. In absence of torsion, the effective field equations depend only on the four-metric, reflecting a quadratic curvature nonlinearity but no higher than second order derivatives. In contrast with recent proposals to obtain 4dEGB theories through a singular rescaling of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling, this formalism requires no (classical) regularization of divergences and is inequivalent to Horndeski gravity, while being generally covaria…
We investigate the virialization of cosmic structures in the framework of flat FLRW cosmological models, in which the vacuum energy density evolves with time. In particular, our analysis focuses on the study of spherical matter perturbations, as they decouple from the background expansion, "turn around" and finally collapse. We generalize the spherical collapse model in the case when the vacuum energy is a running function of the Hubble rate, $Λ=Λ(H)$. A particularly well motivated model of this type is the so-called quantum field vacuum, in which $Λ(H)$ is a quadratic function, $Λ(H)=n_0+n_2\…
We explore the dynamical properties of a cosmological model that includes viscous effects in the dark matter sector of the fluid equations in a flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetime. The bulk viscous effects are described by a non linear extension of the full Israel-Stewart model. We allow the interchange of energy in the dark sector by means of the interaction term, namely $Q$. We establish the dynamical system corresponding to Friedmann and fluid set of equations associated to the model and study the linear stability of its critical points. From the dynamical system, we s…
