We determine parts of the contact homology of certain contact 3-manifolds in the framework of open book decompositions, due to Giroux. We study two cases: when the monodromy map of the compatible open book is periodic and when it is pseudo-Anosov. For an open book with periodic monodromy, we verify the Weinstein conjecture. In the case of an open book with pseudo-Anosov monodromy, suppose the boundary of a page of the open book is connected and the fractional Dehn twist coefficient $c={k\over n}$, where $n$ is the number of prongs along the boundary. If $k\geq 2$, then there is a well-defined linearized contact homology group. If $k\geq 3$, then the linearized contact homology is exponentially growing with respect to the action, and every Reeb vector field of the corresponding contact structure admits an infinite number of simple periodic orbits.
Let $X$ be a simplicial complex with a piecewise linear function $f:X\to\mathbb{R}$. The Reeb graph $Reeb(f,X)$ is the quotient of $X$, where we collapse each connected component of $f^{-1}(t)$ to a single point. Let the nodes of $Reeb(f,X)$ be all homologically critical points where any homology of the corresponding component of the level set $f^{-1}(t)$ changes. Then we can label every arc of $Reeb(f,X)$ with the Betti numbers $(β_1,β_2,\dots,β_d)$ of the corresponding $d$-dimensional component of a level set. The homology labels give more information about the original complex $X$ than the …
We prove that in dimension 3 every nondegenerate contact form is carried by a broken book decomposition. As an application we get that if M is a closed irreducible oriented 3-manifold that is not a graph manifold, for example a hyperbolic manifold, then every nondegenerate Reeb vector field on M has positive topological entropy. Moreover, we obtain that on a closed 3-manifold, every nondegenerate Reeb vector field has either two or infinitely many periodic orbits, and two periodic orbits are possible only on the sphere or on a lens space.
We consider the Goeritz groups of the Heegaard splittings induced from twisted book decompositions. We show that there exist Heegaard splittings of distance $2$ that have the infinite-order mapping class groups whereas that are not induced from open book decompositions. Explicit computation of those mapping class groups are given.
We construct an open book decomposition compatible with a contact structure given by a rational contact surgery on a Legendrian link in the standard contact $S^3$. As an application we show that some rational contact surgeries on certain Legendrian knots induce overtwisted contact structures.
We prove that any mapping class on a compact oriented surface with nonempty boundary can be made pseudo-Anosov and right-veering after a sequence of positive stabilizations.
We construct a Seifert surface for a given null-homologous transverse link in a contact manifold that is compatible with a planar open book decomposition, then obtain a formula of the self-linking number. It extends Bennequin's self-linking number formula for braids in the standard contact 3-sphere.
We provide a complete set of two moves that suffice to relate any two open book decompositions of a given 3-manifold. One of the moves is the usual plumbing with a positive or negative Hopf band, while the other one is a special local version of Harer's twisting, which is presented in two different (but stably equivalent) forms. Our approach relies on 4-dimensional Lefschetz fibrations, and on 3-dimensional contact topology, via the Giroux-Goodman stable equivalence theorem for open book decompositions representing homologous contact structures.
In this paper we write explicitly the open book decompositions of links of quotient surface singularities supporting the corresponding unique Milnor fillable contact structure. The page-genus of these Milnor open books are minimal among all Milnor open books supporting the same contact structure. We also investigate whether the Milnor genus is equal to the support genus for links of quotient surface singularities. We show that for many types of the quotient surface singularities the Milnor genus is equal to the support genus. In the remaining cases we are able to find a small upper bound for t…
We show that on any closed contact manifold of dimension greater than 1 a contact structure with vanishing contact homology can be constructed. The basic idea for the construction comes from Giroux. We use a special open book decomposition for spheres. The page is the cotangent bundle of a sphere and the monodromy is given by a left-handed Dehn twist. In the resulting contact manifold we exhibit a closed Reeb orbit that bounds a single finite energy plane. As a result, the unit element of the contact homology algebra is exact and so the contact homology vanishes. This result can be extended to…
We show that if (B,π) is an open book decomposition of a contact 3-manifold (Y,ξ), then the complement of the binding B has no Giroux torsion. We also prove the sutured Heegaard-Floer c-bar invariant of the binding of an open book is non-zero.
It is known by A. Loi and R. Piergallini that a closed, oriented, smooth 3-manifold is Stein fillable if and only if it has a positive open book decomposition. In the present paper we will show that for every link L in a Stein fillable 3-manifold there exists an additional knot L' to L such that the union of the links L and L' is the binding of a positive open book decomposition of the Stein fillable 3-manifold. To prove the assertion, we will use the divide, which is a generalization of real morsification theory of complex plane curve singularities, and 2-handle attachings along Legendrian cu…
We find a self-linking number formula for a given null-homologous transverse link in a contact manifold that is compatible with either an annulus or a pair of pants open book decomposition. It extends Bennequin's self-linking formula for a braid in the standard contact $3$-sphere.
This paper is the sequel to "The equivalence of Heegaard Floer homology and embedded contact homology via open book decompositions I" and is devoted to proving some of the technical parts of the HF=ECH isomorphism.
In the present paper we describe compatible open books for the fibre connected sum along binding components of open books, as well as for the fibre connected sum along multi-sections of open books. As an application the first description provides simple ways of constructing open books supporting all tight contact structures on $T^3$, recovering a result by van Horn-Morris, as well as an open book supporting the result of a Lutz twist along a binding component of an open book, recovering a result by Ozbagci--Pamuk.
We study open books (or open book decompositions) of a closed oriented 3-manifold which support overtwisted contact structures. We focus on a simple closed curve along which one can perform Stallings twist, called ``twisting loop''. We show that the existence of a twisting loop on the fiber surface of an open book is equivalent up to positive stabilization to the existence of an overtwisted disk in the contact manifold supported by the open book. We also show a criterion for overtwistedness using a certain arc properly embedded in the fiber surface, which is an extension of Goodman's one.
In this note we introduce the (homologically essential) arc complex of a surface as a tool for studying properties of open book decompositions and contact structures. After characterizing destabilizability in terms of the essential translation distance of the monodromy of an open book we given an application of this result to show that there are planer open books of the standard contact structure on the 3-sphere with 5 (or any number larger than 5) boundary components that do not destabilize. We also show that any planar open book with 4 or fewer boundary components does destabilize.
In this note we observe that while all overtwisted contact structures on compact 3--manifolds are supported by planar open book decompositions, not all contact structures are. This has relevance to invariants of contact structures and also to the Weinstein conjecture via work of Abbas Cieliebak and Hofer.
These are lecture notes from the Clay Mathematics Institute summer school ``Floer Homology, Gauge Theory, and Low Dimensional Topology'' Alfred Renyi Institute; www.claymath.org/programs/summer_school/2004/. The main goal of these notes is to sketch a proof of Giroux correspondence between open book decompositions of three manifolds and contact structures, and then discuss various applications of this correspondence.
A real 3-manifold is a smooth 3-manifold together with an orientation preserving smooth involution, called a real structure. In this article we study open book decompositions on smooth real 3-manifolds that are compatible with the real structure. We call them real open book decompositions. We show that each real open book carries a real contact structure and two real contact structures supported by the same real open book decomposition are equivariantly isotopic. We also show that every real contact structure on a closed 3-dimensional real manifold is supported by a real open book. Finally, we…
In this note, we define a new invariant of a Legendrian knot in a contact manifold using an open book decomposition supporting the contact structure. We define the support genus sg(L) of a Legendrian knot L in a contact 3-manifold (M, ξ) as the minimal genus of a page of an open book of M supporting the contact structure ξsuch that L sits on a page and the framing given by the contact structure and by the page agree. We show any null-homologous loose knot in an overtwisted contact structure has support genus zero. To prove this, we observe any topological knot or link in any 3-manifold M sits …
We demonstrate how to combinatorially calculate the EH-class of a compatible contact structure in the sutured Floer homology group of a balanced sutured three manifold which is associated to an abstract partial open book decomposition. As an application we show that every contact three manifold (closed or with convex boundary) can be obtained by gluing tight contact handlebodies whose EH-classes are nontrivial.
An open book decomposition of a 3-manifold $M$ induces a Heegaard splitting for $M$, and the minimal genus among all Heegaard splittings induced by open book decompositions is called the \emph{open book genus} of $M$. It is conjectured by Ozbagci \cite{O} that the open book genus is additive under the connected sum of 3-manifolds. In this paper, we prove that a non-prime 3-manifold which has open book genus 2 is homeomorphic to $L(p,1)\#L(q,1)$ for some integers $p,q\neq\pm1$, that is, it has non-trivial prime pieces of open book genus 1. In particular, there cannot be a counter-example to add…
Giroux has described a correspondence between open book decompositions on a 3--manifold and contact structures. In this paper we use Heegaard Floer homology to give restrictions on contact structures which correspond to open book decompositions with planar pages, generalizing a recent result of Etnyre.
Let $M$ be a closed, oriented, connected 3--manifold and $(B,π)$ an open book decomposition on $M$ with page $Σ$ and monodromy $φ$. It is easy to see that the first Betti number of $Σ$ is bounded below by the number of $S^2\times S^1$--factors in the prime factorization of $M$. Our main result is that equality is realized if and only if $φ$ is trivial and $M$ is a connected sum of $S^2\times S^1$'s. We also give some applications of our main result, such as a new proof of the result by Birman and Menasco that if the closure of a braid with $n$ strands is the unlink with $n$ components then the…
We introduce a generalization of the Lisca-Ozsváth-Stipsicz-Szabó Legendrian invariant $\mathfrak L$ to links in every rational homology sphere, using the collapsed version of link Floer homology. We represent a Legendrian link $L$ in a contact 3-manifold $(M,ξ)$ with a diagram $D$, given by an open book decomposition of $(M,ξ)$ adapted to $L$, and we construct a chain complex $cCFL^-(D)$ with a special cycle in it denoted by $\mathfrak L(D)$. Then, given two diagrams $D_1$ and $D_2$ which represent Legendrian isotopic links, we prove that there is a map between the corresponding chain complex…
Given an open book decomposition (S,h) adapted to a closed, oriented 3-manifold M, we define a chain map from a certain Heegaard Floer chain complex associated to (S,h) to a certain embedded contact homology chain complex associated to (S,h), as defined in arXiv:1008.2734, and prove that it induces an isomorphism on the level of homology. This implies the isomorphism between the hat version of Heegaard Floer homology of -M and the hat version of embedded contact homology of M.
Using square bridge position, Akbulut-Ozbagci and later Arikan gave algorithms both of which construct an explicit compatible open book decomposition on a closed contact $3$-manifold which results from a contact $(\pm 1)$-surgery on a Legendrian link in the standard contact $3$-sphere. In this article, we introduce the ``generalized square bridge position'' for a Legendrian link in the standard contact $5$-sphere and partially generalize this result to the dimension five via an algorithm which constructs relative open book decompositions on relative contact pairs.
The aim of this paper is to use mapping class group relations to approach the `geography' problem for Stein fillings of a contact 3-manifold. In particular, we adapt a formula of Endo and Nagami so as to calculate the signature of such fillings as a sum of the signatures of basic relations in the monodromy of a related open book decomposition. We combine this with a theorem of Wendl to show that for any Stein filling of a contact structure supported by a planar open book decomposition, the sum of the signature and Euler characteristic depends only on the contact manifold. This gives a simple o…
In this article, we study the topology of the family of real analytic germs $F \colon (\mathbb{C}^3,0) \to (\mathbb{C},0)$ given by $F(x,y,z)=\bar{xy}(x^p+y^q)+z^r$ with $p,q,r \in \mathbb{N}$, $p,q,r \geq 2$ and $(p,q)=1$. Such a germ has isolated singularity at 0 and gives rise to a Milnor fibration $\frac{F}{|F|} \colon \mathbb{S}^{5} \setminus L_F \to \mathbb{S}^{1}$. We describe the link $L_F$ as a Seifert manifold and we show that it is always homeomorphic to the link of a complex singularity. However, we prove that in almost all the cases the open-book decomposition of $\mathbb{S}^{5}$ …
This book provides a self-contained introduction to the topology and geometry of surfaces and three-manifolds. The main goal is to describe Thurston's geometrisation of three-manifolds, proved by Perelman in 2002. The book is divided into three parts: the first is devoted to hyperbolic geometry, the second to surfaces, and the third to three-manifolds. It contains complete proofs of Mostow's rigidity, the thick-thin decomposition, Thurston's classification of the diffeomorphisms of surfaces (via Bonahon's geodesic currents), the prime and JSJ decomposition, the topological and geometric classi…
We show that if the monodromy of an open book decomposition has sufficiently high displacement distance, acting on the loop and arc complex for a page, then it is the unique minimal Euler characteristic open book for the manifold. In particular, we show that such an open book induces the unique (up to isotopy) minimal genus Heegaard surface for the manifold, and that this Heegaard surface has cyclic mapping class group.
In this paper, we introduce the notions of an iterated planar Lefschetz fibration and an iterated planar open book decomposition and prove the Weinstein conjecture for contact manifolds supporting an open book that has iterated planar pages. For $n\geq 1$, we show that a $(2n+1)$-dimensional contact manifold $M$ supporting an iterated planar open book decomposition satisfies the Weinstein conjecture.
In this paper we discuss the change in contact structures as their supporting open book decompositions have their binding components cabled. To facilitate this and applications we define the notion of a rational open book decomposition that generalizes the standard notion of open book decomposition and allows one to more easily study surgeries on transverse knots. As a corollary to our investigation we are able to show there are Stein fillable contact structures supported by open books whose monodromies cannot be written as a product of positive Dehn twists. We also exhibit several monoids in …
We use contact fiber sums of open book decompositions to define an infinite hierarchy of filling obstructions for contact 3-manifolds, called planar k-torsion for nonnegative integers k, all of which cause the contact invariant in Embedded Contact Homology to vanish. Planar 0-torsion is equivalent to overtwistedness, while every contact manifold with Giroux torsion also has planar 1-torsion, and we give examples of contact manifolds that have planar k-torsion for any $k \ge 2$ but no Giroux torsion, leading to many new examples of nonfillable contact manifolds. We show also that the complement…
We introduce the notion of a nested open book, a submanifold equipped with an open book structure compatible with an ambient open book, and describe in detail the special case of a push-off of the binding of an open book. This enables us to explicitly describe a natural open book decomposition of a fibre connected sum of two open books along their bindings, provided they are diffeomorphic and admit an open book structure themselves. Furthermore, we apply the results to contact open books, showing that the natural open book structure of a contact fibre connected sum of two adapted open books al…
Given a handle decomposition of a 4-manifold with boundary, and an open book decomposition of the boundary, we show how to produce a trisection diagram of a trisection of the 4-manifold inducing the given open book. We do this by making the original proof of the existence of relative trisections more explicit, in terms of handles. Furthermore, we extend this existence result to the case of 4-manifolds with multiple boundary components, and show how trisected 4-manifolds with multiple boundary components glue together.
We prove that transverse links in any contact manifold $(M,ξ)$ can be realized as a sub-binding of a compatible open book decomposition. We define the support genus of a transverse link and prove that the support genus of a transverse knot is zero if there is an overtwisted disk disjoint from it. Next, we find a relationship between the support genus of a transverse link and its Legendrian approximation.
Embedded contact knot homology (ECK) is a variation on Embedded contact homology (ECH), defined with respect to an open book decomposition compatible with a contact structure on some 3-manifold, M. The knot in question is given by the (null-homologous) binding of the open book and the chain complex is defined in terms of closed orbits of the Reeb vector field and certain pseudoholomorphic curves in the symplectization of the knot complement. In this thesis we first generalize this construction to the case of rational open book decompositions, allowing us to define ECK for rationally null-homol…
The open book decompositions of the 3-sphere whose pages are pairs of pants have been fully understood for some time, through the lens of contact geometry. The purpose of this note is to exhibit a purely topological derivation of the classification of such open books, in terms of the links that form their bindings and the corresponding monodromies. We construct all of the links and their pair-of-pants fiber surfaces from the simplest example, a connected sum of two Hopf links, through performing (generalized) Stallings twists. Then, by applying the now-classical theory of genus two Heegaard di…
We use parameterized Morse theory on the pages of an open book decomposition to efficiently encode the contact topology in terms of a labelled graph on a disjoint union of tori (one per binding component). This construction allows us to generalize the notion of the front projection of a Legendrian knot from the standard contact $\mathbb{R}^3$ to arbitrary closed contact $3$-manifolds. We describe a complete set of moves on such front diagrams, extending the standard Legendrian Reidemeister moves, and we give a combinatorial formula to compute the Thurston-Bennequin number of a nullhomologous L…
By recent results of Baker--Etnyre--Van Horn-Morris, a rational open book decomposition defines a compatible contact structure. We show that the Heegaard Floer contact invariant of such a contact structure can be computed in terms of the knot Floer homology of its (rationally null-homologous) binding. We then use this description of contact invariants, together with a formula for the knot Floer homology of the core of a surgery solid torus, to show that certain manifolds obtained by surgeries on bindings of open books carry tight contact structures. Possible applications to lens space surgerie…
Fractional Dehn twists give a measure of the difference between the relative isotopy class of a homeomorphism of a bordered surface and the Thurston representative of its free isotopy class. We show how to estimate and compute these invariants. We discuss the the relationship of our work to stabilization problems in classical knot theory, general open book decompositions, and contact topology. We include an elementary characterization of overtwistedness for contact structures described by open book decompositions.
